Background

Florida Campus Compact is a coalition of over 50 college and university presidents, and their institutions of higher education.Collectively, we seek to prepare college graduates with skills employers need (workforce development) through high-impact pedagogies that improve teaching, learning & student retention while building stronger communities through campus-community collaboration. The FY 2015-16 appropriation to Florida Campus Compact in the amount of $225,000 was dedicated to the purpose of expanding our capacity to facilitate Community Engaged Scholarship among Florida’s colleges and universities.

AmeriCorps/ Volunteers in Service to America Cost Share Florida Campus Compact hosts an AmeriCorps VISTA program, which is federally funded through a grant from the Corporation for National & Community Service (CNCS). A portion of our state appropriation is used as a cost-share to support VISTA members placed with colleges, universities, and community-based organizations, in order to recruit and train college students to serve in their communities. FL|CC AmeriCorps VISTA members are successfully building bridges between the classrooms and communities by connecting educators, students, and community partners to improve education and strengthen communities through campuscommunity partnerships. AmeriCorps VISTA members provide an additional human resource and capacity that is invaluable in seeking to expand the scholarship of engagement while strengthening communities in Florida.

Recent Program Highlights and Plans

The FL|CC VISTA Program welcomed nine new full-time VISTA members in May, who will serve for one year. We also welcomed 14 Summer VISTA Associate members, these members will serve either a 8-week or 10-week term that will focus on enhancing the already existing VISTA project at their host site. These members will serve at Florida International University, Community Tampa Bay, Chain Reaction, University of Miami, Adventist University of Health Sciences, New College of Florida, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida. We are also recently released an updated project host application for new host sites to join our program for the 2016-2017 grant year. We hope to bring on new host sites in early spring 2017. We are also in the midst of planning one of our two In Service Trainings. This year’s host institution is Stetson University. The training which will take place July 13-15 will bring all the FL|CC VISTA members together for three days of learning, networking, team building and service projects. Lastly, we are currently recruiting for a few more full time members to begin in mid-July and early August.

VISTA Stories

‘Forgotten Heroes’ Project at Ringling College In May, Ringling College student Nachman Y L’har continued on with his second year of the veterans portrait project ‘Forgotten Heroes’, with assistance from the college’s Student Life & Digital Checkout. Nachman created the project last year to celebrate veterans in the Sarasota community and to bridge a gap he observed between Ringling and the Veteran community. Students, staff, and faculty created portraits of veterans visiting the campus in weekly drawing sessions in the medium of their choice. The portraits will be displayed in a special exhibition for Veteran’s Day, then gifted to the veterans. Cooking on a Dime’ at Pensacola State College! In May, VISTA member Jessica Johnson worked with the Financial Literacy Committee at PSC to develop events for Money Matter$ Week, most notably, a budget-friendly food tasting event aptly titled ‘Cooking on a Dime’. This year, the theme for the event was “Pack-N-Go,” which catered to PSC’s average student who needs an inexpensive, easy to assemble meal. Each day, over 150 students sampled dishes prepared by volunteer chefs. A ‘Cooking on a Dime’ cookbook, featuring 100+ quick and easy recipes, was distributed to students as well. FIU Student Food Pantry VISTA member Brian Mannas, serving in the Center for Leadership and Service at FIU, recently furthered their partnership with the organization International Children’s Outreach (ICO). The founder of ICO, whom is also an FIU alum, Onica Charles, committed to sponsoring the FIU Student Food Pantry with a monthly food donation. Their first donation for April totaled 1,175 pounds of rice, flour, vegetables, tuna, and macaroni & cheese. Next month, the ICO plans to donate beans, cereal, ramen noodles, and soup. In total, the food pantry received 2,414 pounds of donated food in April, the most ever received in just one month. HERO Recognition at UCF On April 15th, HERO (Honors Educational Reach Out) held its annual Recognition Event. This event acknowledges the dedication and hard work that University of Central Florida student volunteers provide to their local community. During the spring semester, these volunteers contributed 467 hours of service. With contributions from 13 corporate sponsors, HERO received over $800 in donations, thus leading to a successful and celebratory event! Earth Day Celebration at Barry University FL|CC VISTAs Ashton Spangler & Shay Bellamy, VISTA member Shernee Bellamy took the lead on along with Barry University staff, load vans of donatplanning all of the educational programming for the ed items. 7th Annual Earth Day Celebration at Barry University. This year, the theme was “Take a Stance on the Green”, and offered faculty, staff, and students the opportunity to share and talk about sustainable initiatives. Topics ranged from ‘Pythons in the Everglades’ to ‘Food Justice in America’, with visuals, powerful messages, and solutions offered to these issues. The audience was able to stand with them on these topics by pledging to be mindful at ‘The Stances’ table, receiving an ‘I Pledged’ sticker afterward. 8th Annual Move-Out Drive at Barry University With the theme of “Donate, Don’t Dump”, the Move Out Drive is a yearly event that provides Barry students with the opportunity to donate gently used items that they no longer want or cannot take with them as they move off campus at the end of the academic year. VISTA member Shernee Bellamy, who serves in the Office of Mission Engagement, spearheaded the planning and coordination of marketing and promotion, supply collection, and institutional support of the drive. VISTA member Ashton Spangler, who serves in the Center for Community Service Initiatives, coordinated with community partners to compile requested items and arrange donation pickups. Among the donations collected in the nine day drive were 2361 pounds of clothes, 570 pounds of shoes, 318 pounds of food, 15 mini-refrigerators, 10 micro-waves, 96 formal dresses, 181 books, 194 bed sheets, 265 towels, and 107 blankets and comforters. The donations were received by 11 non-profit organizations around Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. Carol City Middle School Students Showcase Talents After 5-Week Group Sessions With St. Thomas University St. Thomas University graduate counseling students wrapped up group sessions at Carol City Middle School with a big showcase celebration. Counseling students met with a group of designated students for five weekly creative group sessions. Each group worked to learn a creative skill including painting and framing, drama and spoken word, latch and hook embroidery, upcycling (creatively enhancing pieces of plain clothing), and meditation. Counseling students created valuable experiences in their groups by practicing a trauma informed approach that they learned in the classroom, teaching the kids resiliency, self-control, and other skills to help them Students presenting from the “Up-Cycle That” group

become more focused learners in the classroom. At the final celebration, students got to showcase some of what they had been working on while in groups. Some staff and parents were also present during the celebration to support the students’ accomplishments. Invictus Games in Orlando VISTA Member Renisha Robinson volunteered as a ‘Sports Administrator’ at the Invictus Games, which took place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports from May 8-11. The Invictus Games are held for wounded veterans, during which they compete in a variety of sport competitions. Renisha said that “it was a great experience to see people who have served our country and the passion that still resides inside each of them.” She was amazed at the “endless possibilities” showcased during her time as a volunteer at the event. Spring/Summer 2016: FL|CC AmeriCorps VISTA Project Host Site Application for 2016-2017 Grant Year are Available The FL|CC AmeriCorps VISTA Program provides FL|CC member institutions and community-based organizations the opportunity to host a full-time AmeriCorps VISTA member. FL|CC AmeriCorps VISTA members seek to engage educators, students, and local stakeholders to improve education and address societal needs through campus-community partnerships, applied civic education, and engaged citizenship. FL|CC member colleges and universities as well as community-based organizations, in partnership with an FL|CC member institution, are invited to apply. As part of the application process, FL|CC offered Technical Assistance Webinars on the following dates/times: May 24th at 10am, May 26th at 2pm, June 3rd at 10am, June 14th at 2pm & June 21st at 2pm. SaveFirst & FocusFirst

FL|CC has established collaborative partnerships with SaveFirst and FocusFirst, two new AmeriCorps programs, assisting in their expansion into North Florida. Students from FSU and TCC participated in both of these programs.

FocusFirst

FocusFirst ensures that children in urban and rural communities receive comprehensive vision care during their crucial formative years. The successful launch of the FocusFirst initiative in Florida provided high-tech vision care for 2,161 preschool-age children. provides a cost effective direct response to the vision problems of children living in urban and rural communities. During Fall 2015, Impact America - Florida provided free vision screenings to children, ages six months to five years, at Head Starts and daycare centers located in low-income communities in nine counties in North Florida. High-tech digital cameras are used to perform the screenings. All children failing the screenings have received or are receiving follow-up care in coordination with local vision care providers coordinated by Sight Savers America.

SaveFirst

Every tax season, America’s hardest-working families rely on their tax refund to support their children by helping to pay down debts and put food on the table. Unfortunately, they face exorbitant, negligent, and sometimes fraudulent preparers that cost our communities millions in fees. SaveFirst, a high-quality tax preparation initiative, trains college, graduate, and law students to provide free tax preparation services and opportunities for savings to low-income, working families—especially targeting those eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. 39 student volunteers from Florida State University and Tallahassee Community College served nearly 70 families in April alone, totaling to 443 families over the course of the entire 2016 tax season. The students’ efforts helped these families to secure more than $622,000 in tax refunds and to save approximately $177,000 in commercial tax preparation fees. 5

FL|CC Hosts the Florida Association of Colleges & Universities Annual Meeting June 1, 2016 Twenty-three university and college presidents representing all three sectors of Florida’s nonprofit private and public higher educational institutions gathered in Orlando for the Florida Association of Colleges & Universites (FAC&U) annual meeting. Established in 1933, FAC&U is the only organization comprised of all 70 college and university presidents representing all three sectors of the non-profit private and public higher educational institutions in Florida. FL|CC hosted the meeting. Featured speakers included: Stephen Black, J.D. “High Impact Practices to Increase Student Access and Success” Stephen Black is an accomplished and passionate advocate for student development. A highly sought-after public speaker, Mr. Black is also the grandson of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black, known for his role in controversial 1950-60s Civil Rights decisions, including Brown v. Board of Education. Following his grandfather’s passion for public service and law, Mr. Black earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania (magna cum laude) and his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1997. He then returned to Alabama to join a law firm and acted as an assistant to the Governor. Encoraged by the enthusiasm of students, he helped to establish the Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility (CESR) at The University of Alabama. Mr. Black is the President and Founder of Impact America, which provides educational and social outreach to underserved communities, allowing college students the opportunity to participate in service-learning projects in several states. Most recently, this program expanded into North Florida in partnership with Florida Campus Compact. Adolph Brown, Ph.D.

Dr. Adolph Brown, III rose from Head Start, welfare and the inner-city streets with a singleparent mother and four siblings to being the first in his family to graduate from high school and attend college. Previously described as an “At-Risk” youth, he began his collegiate teaching career at the College of William and Mary, Tidewater Community College and Hampton University, where he became a full tenured professor and department chair. Under his leadership the department grew to become the number one producer of African-American baccalaureates in Psychology and Psychology/ Education in the country. Dr. Brown also served as the Dean of the Graduate College at Hampton and later as a “Scholar in Residence” at NYU to further his research pursuits. He is an accomplished public speaker and an author of 7


numerous publications and books. He has been the recipient of more than 300 honors and awards including the E.L. Hamm Distinguished Teaching Award, Honorary Man of Tomorrow, Service Learning Fellow, and Who’s Who Among College and University Professors. Mark Milliron, Ph.D. “The Art and Science of Student Success: Helping More and More Diverse Students Learn Well and Finish Strong.” Dr. Mark Milliron is Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer of Civitas Learning, an organization helping the education field meld emerging technology, data science, and design thinking to help students learn well and finish strong. An award-winning author, speaker, and consultant, Dr. Milliron has worked with colleges/universities, K-12 schools, corporations, and government agencies around the world. He previously managed Postsecondary Improvement with the Gates Foundation, served as Chancellor of WGU Texas, was an Endowed Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin and President/CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College. He is a member of numerous boards/ advisory groups, including the Society for College & University Planning, the Global Online Academy, and the Texas Student Success Council. Past board service includes the American Council on Education, and Western Governors University. Dr. Milliron has received numerous awards; in 2016 the Chronicle of Higher Education named him one of the “Top Technology Innovators” in higher education. The conference was an investment in building the movement for the public purposes of higher education – to educate students to graduate with civic and career-ready skills, and a determination to improve the quality of community life. The Distinguished Service award was presented to Dr. Anthony James Catanese, President of Florida Institute of Technology. The award, presented annually by FAC&U, recognizes exceptional leadership in higher education.

Meeting with University of South Florida Faculty and Staff Thursday, May 5, 2016 Discussions were centered on USF’s involvement in the Florida Campus Compact Annual Conference in November, 2016 and the role that USF would play in assisting in the development and execution of the conference. Specifics of conference theme, keynote presenters, role of USF faculty and administration, and USF as host campus were discussed. Open communication will continue throughout the planning process.
