ONE TO REMEMBER

The Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile will be celebrating its 10th anniversary when runners toe the start line next year on Saturday, May 25. With just over 2,000 finishers in its first year, the Soldier Field 10 Mile has grown into one of the largest running events in the country. “The Soldier Field 10 Mile is always on my calendar because the experience of running onto the field of an NFL stadium never gets old,” says Tim Kowols, a nine-time finisher. “I get goose bumps every time I sprint out of the tunnel toward the finish on the 50. The music, the cheering—it’s just a thrill. And this is coming from a Packers fan.” A Memorial Day Weekend tradition, the Saturday morning race kicks off the weekend. “The idea behind this race was to create a unique experience and to honor the men and women of our nation’s military that have been lost in battle,” says Mark Colpoys, vice president of Events at Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago. Soldier Field does double duty as the home to the NFL’s Chicago Bears and also as one of the nation’s largest war memorials. “The race continues to provide an unbelievable experience and honors our fallen soldiers, but it also has become a great way for friends and family to start their holiday weekend together,” Colpoys says. After runners finish on the 50-yard line they are treated to a special tailgate-themed, post-race party with live music, food and beer. Registration for the 10th annual Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile is now open. Visit soldierfield10.com to learn more about the event and to take advantage of special “pre-season” pricing available only until January 15.

ARE YOU BOSTON BOUND? 2

fleet feet sports holiday gift guide 2012

“Joining Boston Bound is worth it just for the ride on the bus,” says Chicago-based, Boston Marathoner Matt Brunmeier. It’s true, the private charter bus that takes Boston Bound runners to Athlete’s Village in Hopkinton can prove to be invaluable if weather conditions are adverse. But the bus is not the only perk those training with Boston Bound receive. There’s a training program, 12 weeks of supported training runs, the traditional Sunday morning shake-out run, a reception space for friends and family on race day, and a fantastic Italian group dinner on Sunday night. 10 FOR 10

“The Chicago Women’s Half Marathon has a special place in our hearts,” say Maryellen Charbonneau and Tori Sager, friends and co-founders of Fellow Flowers. “It was our first race as a group and, appropriately, our celebration of coming together as women and friends.” The second annual race is already on the calendar for Sunday, June 23. “We resonated so strongly with the race’s purpose. To honor the reasons, journeys and moments why women run, and to not just focus on the miles means a lot to us,” Charbonneau and Sager say. “We will have over 100 women connected to us participating next June and we will come back to this race every year for its contagious energy, its beautiful course, and the ability to connect with other strong and amazing women.” The second edition of the Chicago Women’s Half Marathon & 5K will build off of the energy of its inaugural event and continue to celebrate women and the reasons they run. “I absolutely loved the inaugural event,” says Liza Morich. “It had all the special bells and whistles that women deserve and the energy of a women’s-only event just can’t be matched by other races.” Over 30 percent of the women who participated in the inaugural event were running their first half marathon. “The event is just perfect for women looking to run their first race,” Morich says. “The on-course support, the cheers from the spectators and the energy from your fellow runners make it an experience that you will always remember.” The event offers a 12-week training program that will kick off in March and is lead by women coaches and mentors. The group runs are held out of the local Fleet Feet Sports locations. BEING ACTIVE AND BEING FASHIONABLE ARE NO LONGER MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE

FASHIONABLY FIT There are two types of people in the world: the ones who wear workout clothing only to work out and the ones who consider workout clothing every day, all day apparel. (OK, maybe there are a few more types of people in the world.). Over the last five years, the paths of fitness and fashion have merged—twice. First, athletic apparel makers realized that while many people wear black, it was time

enough to throw on for a meet up at the coffee shop. Familiar brands like Moving Comfort are offering a hybrid like its Urban Gym line (see Holiday Gift Guide, page 10)—workout apparel technical enough to satisfy those looking for performance gear but with fun prints and styles making them appealing for wearing all over town. Brands like Brooks and Nike are creating outerwear

“WORKING OUT HAS NOW BECOME A LIFESTYLE AND, AS A RESULT, EXERCISE CLOTHING IS MIGRATING OUT OF THE GYM INTO THE STREETS,” SAYS ANDY AHN, LOLE. to start branching out into the rainbow a little more. The companies also realized that men and women are built differently and have different needs in their respective apparel. The results have been fantastic. Bright colors now grace the racks. Tops and bottoms are streamlined for better, and more appealing, fit. Beyond the fitness apparel itself getting a makeover, something else was happening. Those paths merged again. Consumers became interested in buying apparel that was both functional and fashionable. Something they could wear for a workout, perhaps, but something they could also wear to the office, or out with some friends. They also wanted clothes that felt to them as comfortable as workout apparel but without looking too hardcore. Enter “lifestyle” pieces. “Working out has now become a lifestyle and, as a result, exercise clothing is migrating out of the gym into the streets,” says Andy Ahn, product designer for Lole. Brands such as Icebreaker, Horny Toad, prAna and Lole have emerged on the market as makers of high-quality, even technical, lifestyle apparel. Some can be worn as activewear and some can simply be worn from work to dinner. For example, take Lole’s Shining Top ($80, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 8). It’s soft, form-fitting and feminine with a half zip and thumbholes, and it’s perfect for a run. It’s also attractive

styles that no longer look like “just” a running jacket. Even accessories, like hats or mittens, can be crossed over from run to fun. It’s about versatility and individuality. These clothes allow us to express who we are while still maintaining style and professionalism. As this trend has evolved, so have our Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago stores. While you’ll still find hardcore training and racing pieces, such as the old-school split short and singlet, those styles are becoming a smaller part of what we bring into the stores. The industry at large is evolving even beyond the apparel as more and more unique events are added to the calendar. It’s a whole new world out there and as it has changed, we’ve made sure to change with it. As the premiere outfitter of running and triathlon gear in Chicagoland, we continually challenge our vendors to focus on producing pieces that meet the diverse needs of our customers. Whatever you’re up to we’ve got you covered from dawn until dusk. We’ll help keep you fit and fashionvable. Now that is the best of all worlds. F Catherine Moloznik is a product manager and buyer for Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago. She loves running, the thrill of testing out the latest and greatest apparel, and a good meal with her husband and friends. She’s happy to report she can wear the same outfit for all three.

BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE There’s magic in the air in Chicago at the holidays. We know this is true because while the lights are twinkling and the good cheer is flowing, no one seems to mind the cold. Then, the dark winter hits and suddenly the city is shivering, shoveling and staying indoors as much as possible. There is light at the end of this tunnel, though, and it isn’t spring. It’s cold-weather running gear. It keeps you warm and dry even in the worst of conditions. But, it needs to be used in the manner in which it was designed for full effectiveness. You also don’t want to over layer. As chilly as it seems, you should dress as if it’s a bit warmer outside than it is because your core temp will rise as you run and stay elevated. Too many layers and you’ll overheat. It can be a little tricky. Thankfully, we have much experience to share. The tip to staying warm and dry

4

fleet feet sports holiday gift guide 2012

without overheating is layering. Work your way from bottom to top in moisture-wicking, breathable and warm (where appropriate) fabrics and pieces designed to give you the most enjoyable cold-weather running experience possible. Underneath it all The key to keeping dry is to take the sweat and move it away from your body. Moisture-wicking fabrics extend to more than just shirts and pants. Underneath it all is where the sweat starts so that’s where you need to start moving it off your body. In other words, you need cool under garments, such as Saxx, men’s performance underwear, or Moving Comfort’s mesh-backed sports bras. See Holiday Gift Guide, page 16. Next Up Layering in runner speak consists

of a three-layer system: baselayers, midlayers and outerlayers. The first and arguably the most important layer is the baselayer. This is what will be layered next to skin. If you want to stay warm, dry and comfortable during a run, the baselayer needs to be lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking. One of our favorite solutions is merino wool. Wool often gets a bad rap about being itchy (think Grandma’s old wool sweater) or you may think of it as a material used to keep heat in but merino wool is very different from traditional wool. Merino combines the best qualities of traditional wool, synthetics and cotton. It is soft and non-itch, warm in the cold, and cool in the heat. It breathes to prevent clamminess, and it has a miraculous ability to ward off stink. Brands like Icebreaker and SmartWool offer pure merino wool while Nike blends

KEEP WARM THIS SEASON WITH OUR WINTER RUNNING ADVICE

merino wool and polyester for baselayer heaven; and Craft has managed to mimic wool qualities in a traditional polyester fit and performance. Mizuno has come up with a revolutionary way to put our sweat to work for us by creating its Breath Thermo line, which uses our moisture to keep us warmer. See Holiday Gift Guide, pages 8 and 13. In the Middle The midlayer is the thermal layer which is in place to help continue the moisture transfer from your body while adding insulation. Midlayers tend to have a brushed interior that speeds up this process and creates a pocket of air that works as an insulator. Air is a poor conductor of thermal energy and therefore helps keep you warm. These layers typically have a half-zip function, allowing you to dissipate heat easily if you begin to get hot. They’re also intended to fit over a baselayer and under an outerlayer, so the fit is not skin-hugging but not big and baggy, either. On days when the temperatures aren’t dipping into single digits, the midlayer may also serve as the outerlayer. Merino wool still features prominently in our lines as do Mizuno’s Breath Thermo tops. Sugoi’s Speedster ($100, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 13) can be worn standalone but is outfitted with a ton of stretch (and a hoodie). The Brooks Utopia Thermal Hoodie II ($110, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 8) breathes top to bottom. As an added bonus, some of our new styles cross over into lifestyle apparel. (Double bonus for the ladies, the Mizuno Aero Breath hoodies feature a Thermo Windtop ponytail hole.) ($90, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 8) On Top The final layer is the outerlayer, which is designed to resist the elements. This is where a jacket or vest comes in, shielding you from the weather while maintaining adequate ventilation. Venting panels are important in an outerwear piece so that as you warm up during an activity, the excess warm air can escape, preventing you from overheating. A running jacket is specifically designed to offer runners the highest level of protection from wind, rain or snow while also providing the most technical aspects, such as insulation, moisture control and breathability. We offer the very best in technical running jackets, such as the Nike Element Shield Max Jacket ($250, see Holiday Gift Guide, pages 7 and 12), Pearl Izumi Infinity Softshell Jacket ($150, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 7) or The North Face TKA 80 Hybrid Full Zip ($70, see Holiday Gift Guide, pages 7 and 12), which also incorporate safety elements, such as reflective piping. Don’t Forget Your Bottom Running pants and tights have come a long, long way. And because of that, there’s no need for layering pant on tight

on the bottom. With your legs doing the bulk of the work, they tend to stay quite warm as is, plus the new crop of bottoms have built-in ways to keep you toasty. Tights and pants earn their keep by shielding the legs from those pesky hail pellets, rain drops and snowflakes (oh, and the wind). Of course, that doesn’t mean they can’t get technical. Check out Mizuno’s Elixir Pant ($90, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 14), Nike’s Element Shield Tight ($90, see Holiday Gift Guide, pages 9 and 14), Brooks’ Utopia Thermal Pant ($95, see Holiday Gift Guide, pages 9 and 14) and CW-X’s Stabilyx Tight ($100, see Holiday YakTrax ($20-$29.95, Gift Guide, page 9) for the cream see Holiday Gift Guide, page 19) of the crop. Safety First Winter is dark, dark, dark. It’s also snowy and icy a good portion of the time. Not the best running combination so safety first is the motto all runners must adopt come winter. Most outerlayer pieces offer reflective panels, piping or zippers to increase visibility. Some even offer Nathan Beanie with LED actual lights. If you’re going to be ($30, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 19) out in the dark, make sure you’re choosing a jacket with a highly visible presence. To combat snow and ice, consider Gore-Tex footwear for water protection and YakTrax, which help keep you from slipping. Don’t Forget the Digits Repeat after us: I won’t forget my hat and gloves. We may sound like your mom, but you’ll thank us when you don’t have frostbitten fingers (isn’t that just what mom would say?). A lot of warm air escapes from the head so making sure you have a moisture-wicking hat, like the Nathan Beanie, is a must. Fingers freeze fast so look for element-resistant gloves and mittens, like the Pearl Izumi Shine Wind Mitt ($30, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 19). Lastly, if you prefer not having cold air zap you right in the chin, a neck gaiter, like ours from SmartWool ($28, see Holiday Gift Guide, page 18), can be really helpful. F

JOINING A TRAINING PROGRAM OR GROUP RUN CAN IMPROVE YOUR PACE, PROVIDE MOTIVATION AND CREATE LONG-LASTING FRIENDSHIPS

26

fleet feet sports holiday gift guide 2012

In running, like in life, no one truly does it all alone—even those who consider themselves “solo” runners and scoff at the notion of running in a group. Along the way to the open road, there are tunes motivating people; shoe salespeople recommending and fitting shoes; blogs and magazines offering training guidance. For others, there are running groups, whether training program, weekly fun runs or a handful of friends joined in purpose. People run for many reasons—fitness, health, for fun, because they’re good at it, to make friends, to support a cause, to justify last night’s burrito. Whatever the case, runners always have a reason to head out the door and hit the road (or Lakefront Path). Sometimes that reason is in the form of a training program signed up and paid for with coaches and fellow participants waiting. Sometimes the reason is that group of guys or gals waiting at Fleet Feet Sports for a weekly fun run. Either way, those who run with others find the experience to be beneficial, both to their running and to their life.

No one should have to do it all alone, because running with others can make you faster, keep you going when you feel like stopping, and create friendships that last a lifetime. The Training Difference Training programs come with one of the best, built-in performance boosters: coaches. “Coaches want to see you hit the goal you’ve set,” says Mike Norman, co-owner and co-founder of Chicago Endurance Sports (CES), one of Chicagoland’s most popular training programs. And how. Regardless of what program you join, whether it’s Winter Warriors or the marathon training program, the coaches provide daily workouts in addition to two coached sessions per week with the group. Leveraging their experience, the coaches work with each individual to create a tailored plan that best lines up with experience level and goals. They’ll also adjust accordingly throughout training. They’re available for consultation on any topic, such as nutrition or rest, and best of all, they’re there for their runners. “They guide you along the

ALL TOGETHER NOW

way,” Norman says. “Life comes up and there aren’t going to be perfect scripts, so the coaches make sure that your training stays on track.” Not every runner joins a training program to set a PR, but for some that’s just what happens. Chicago runner Jesse Mendoza joined CES in late 2008 after running his first Chicago Marathon. After struggling with some injuries in 2010, which forced him to sit out a CES season, he rejoined in 2011, and at this year’s Chicago Marathon set a PR that was 54 minutes faster than his previous

It was certainly a team effort for Chicago runner Lauren Levin at a recent half marathon. Levin, also a Chicks’ Night runner, was at mile four when she fell down hard. Her three companions— also Chicks’ Night runners connected through the fun runs—all stopped their run and insisted on walking with her until she could be certain she was fine to keep going. They all finished together. “How’s that for support?” Levin asks. “I should mention I had a cold and almost quit at mile one. Without their support, I would have.”

marathon outing. “The most important thing I get out of training with CES is the chance to improve my running,” Mendoza says. “The coaches design some great programs that help me with my performance. I feel training with CES has helped tremendously in reaching my goals.” More, training programs provide lots of perks, like race day amenities, apparel, free products and more. And who doesn’t like personal porta-potties and more stuff? Socially Speaking Having just moved to Chicago, Keren Mitchell heard about Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago’s Chicks’ Night Women’s Fun Runs, she was interested but also feeling a little self-conscious about running with the group. After a few weeks, she summoned the courage to go and she hasn’t looked back since. “I find that in the company of other like-minded people, the miles just tick by,” Mitchell says. “I am motivated to run more, run faster and run better. I’ve also started volunteering in the running community after being inspired by others in the group.” Companionship is a great motivator—to show up, to keep going, to go faster. Mike Norman sums it up well, “You have the support of other people going through the same thing.” When the going gets tough, the whole group gets going—together. For Mitchell, this “team” feeling is the best part of running with a group.

Mile after mile together encourages not only support but true friendship. “We have people that never knew each other before who become life-long friends,” Norman says. “You find people with common goals that you might not have met somewhere else. You really get to know each other better.” The groups themselves become as tight as families, cheering each other on, being excited when a member PRs, offering support when another has a bad day. “We always refer to ourselves as the CES family,” Norman says. “You have somebody to celebrate with who has gone through the same things and they’re just as proud of you as you are of them. It makes it a more memorable and fantastic experience.” Like Mitchell’s experience of feeling inspired to volunteer as a result of her involvement with Chicks’ Night, Levin also garners a lot of positive energy from the group. “The best part about Chicks’ Night is the positive reinforcement and encouragement to be healthy and better yourself as a runner,” Levin says. Mendoza, too, noted that while performance improvement has been his goal, he really enjoys those group runs. Whether it’s for performance, companionship or as a simple change of pace, joining a training program or weekly fun run can literally change your life. After all, inspiration is infectious. F

FOLLOW A FEW SIMPLE SUGGESTIONS TO STAY ON THE ROADS ALL YEAR LONG

No one likes to be injured. Beyond the fact that it downright hurts, it sidelines running for days, weeks and sometimes months. As athletes, we have a tendency to push through pain and continue on an injury, which makes things that much worse. We cut back, even stop working out entirely. Eventually enough time passes, the body recovers, and the cycle starts over. We also get into bad habits, such as not cross training, drinking enough fluids or giving our bodies enough rest. The thing is, it happens to all of us, even those of us who are supposed to know better, which is why it’s always a good refresher to hear some of the finer points of injury prevention again. If we all heed a few simple tips, maybe none of us will run into each other at physical therapy this year. The Mechanics of an Injury The root of an injury exists in our body’s physiology. Our bodies move and react through an intricate firing of muscles that activate tendons, which propel skeletal structures resulting in movement. It seems simple but in reality, there are stabilizing mechanisms, protective coatings, and locking joints that make space travel look like a piece of cake. Even walking requires the entire body, from the toes to the head, functioning in unison. The injury cycle begins when this process begins to fatigue. One link in the chain becomes disrupted (imagine a tight calf) and we begin relying on secondary means, which are not the natural functions of those areas (think your hamstring begins working harder to make up for the tight calf). This decreases performance, often substantially. We may push through the pain or shake it off, worsening the issue. The Fix So, how do we keep the whole system working properly? Ask yourself a few important questions, such as: What kind of shoes do you wear most often besides your training shoes? This is important because if those shoes affect you poorly, it will disrupt a link in the chain. Speaking of shoes, how old are your running shoes? Ladies, are your sports bras over a year old? Do you

run the same distance and the same speed every time you run? When is the last time you went to yoga? Do you cross train? Sport isn’t the only path to injury. Athletes can often get injured because of repetitive stress they’re creating in other aspects of life, such as how you sit, posture, heavy lifting during your job. The key to preventing injury is to assess the risks that exist, attempt to correct them and to take some preventative measures going forward. It’s not foolproof, of course, but it’s better than the alternative, which is certain injury. Here are some helpful suggestions: Get properly Fit for training shoes Start by visiting a Fit Professional at Fleet Feet Sports and get Fit for the correct shoes. Whether you’re running, working out or walking, shoes that match your body’s biomechanics greatly reduce stress and the likelihood of developing injury. Our Shoe Fit Process assesses your goals and shoe needs based on your gait (how you move) and using that information with some technical measurements, our Fit Professional will recommend shoes that provide you the best ride possible. This short but thorough process can make an enormous difference in how long you stay injury free.

Update your shoes often Well-fitting shoes is only the beginning; they have a shelf-life of approximately six months for a person of a moderate level of activity. Once they begin to break down, the guidance mechanisms in the shoes that made them valuable to you begin to wear out, causing the injury cycle to begin. If you are closer to a high level of activity, consider new kicks quarterly. Also, don’t forget to update all the shoes in your life, especially if you’re wearing non-supportive shoes a lot of the time.

Stretch it out Yoga incorporates poses that build core muscles, which strengthen our body’s natural flow and reduces the likelihood of relying on secondary systems. The icing on the yoga cake is the stretch. Flexibility increases our muscles’ adaptability, again reducing the potential for injuring them, giving us a little room to push them further without as many repercussions. Chicago Endurance Sports has Yoga for Runners classes specifically designed for the needs of endurance athletes For info, www.chicagoendurancesports.com.

Get Superfeet Most people aren’t inspired to run out and buy shoe inserts without prompting by a podiatrist. But they really work. Superfeet and other insoles position the foot properly inside the shoe to maximize the foot’s natural tendencies. You should have them in your athletic shoes and everyday shoes, including heels. In order for an insole to work properly, it must be fit specifically for your foot, the shoe it is worn in and the way you move, therefore it is impossible for a shoe manufacturer to incorporate them into the shoe. This is also why it’s important to be fit at the same time you’re purchasing your shoes. Available in full-length and three-quarter-length sizes (see Holiday Gift Guide, page 24).

Compress With brightly colored socks on the legs of every runner on the path these days, the secret is out that compression works. Compression socks, sleeves and tights work to align and stabilize muscles during active use and greatly increase recovery afterwards. Through graduated compression (tighter around the ankle than it is higher up), these socks, sleeves, and other compression pieces reduce the veins’ diameter and effectively push oxygen depleted blood back to the heart faster. Helping complete the circuit, the same compression increases the flow of oxygen-rich blood back to the muscles faster. Oxygen is one of the primary forms of fuel for the muscles, and the more and faster we deliver it to them, the quicker they can recover and the better they can perform. Our CEP Allsport Compression Calf Sleeves and Socks (see Holiday Gift Guide, page 24) are hugely popular (try them on your next flight, too).

Massage often We refer to massage as muscle maintenance. As muscles fatigue and tighten up from excessive use, the fastest way to repair them is through massage. When used properly, rolling devices help break up fascia material and increase the flexibility and function of muscles. For the neglected muscles, the pain can be excruciating, but in the best possible way. Foam rollers work well, but for best results, we recommend the Trigger Point products (see sidebar). Proper muscle maintenance requires a blend of actual massage from a therapist and the use of rolling devices. The best tip is to follow the blood flow. Start with your lower leg and slowly work your way up to the hips. This helps speed up recovery. However, to keep injury from returning once performance returns, massage needs to be part of your exercise routine, not something you do only when muscles start to hurt.

Hydrate All of this would be for nothing without proper hydration. Dehydration is a leading cause for injury. Water provides lubrication for muscles, which increases their flexibility and adaptability, and promotes healthy blood flow. Mix up active hydration drinks like Hammer Heed (see Holiday Gift Guide, page 25), which provide electrolytes and buffer lactic acid. F

MINIMALIST MOVEMENT

Minimal footwear is more than just the cool new craze—it is part of a larger movement. While the actual benefits of minimal shoes are often overlooked for their lightweight feel and faster appeal, they’re designed to improve form, which is what makes them truly valuable. “The same principles of strengthening and maintaining muscles, improving joint mobility, and improving motion patterns for your core and upper body apply equally well to the muscles that control the motion of the foot,” says Spencer White of Saucony’s Human Performance and Innovation Lab in Lexington, Mass. The holiday season is a time of reflection—on our accomplishments, our failures, our futures. For me, this contemplation invokes the image of George Bailey, protagonist of the Frank Capra classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” After a series of setbacks, George comes to believe that it would have been better if he’d never been born but with the help of a guardian angel realizes that he’s impacted the lives of many, even through seemingly insignificant gestures. When Lisa and I started Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago more than 16 years ago, we wanted to grow the community of runners in Chicago. We didn’t know anybody but our friends who ran, so we went to the heart of the running community: the Lakefront Path. We began handing out water and Gatorade on the Path on weekends. Now, 17 training seasons later, we have multiple hydration stations on the Lakefront Path every Saturday and Sunday. We hand out 325,000 cups over 18 weeks each summer and early fall. Many runners have reached out to tell us they wouldn’t be able to do their long runs without us. And all because we had the simple idea to support runners’ efforts by giving them water and Gatorade. This is threaded throughout everything we do. We’ve done an amazing job of growing this community of runners, which by its very nature spurs support—for our races (which benefit charitable causes) and for the charities we support. When we took over the Ravenswood Run, it was a 400-person event that was about to close down, leaving the Ravenswood Community Services without its largest benefactor. Today it’s a 3,000-person event, creating even more resources for this important neighborhood food distribution program. Our Soldier Field 10 benefits The American Cancer Society and Salute through charity fundraising while our new Women’s Half Marathon and 5K benefits the American Heart Association. We’re involved with 14 charities, whether through events, training programs or donations. We’re always thinking, “How can we do a better job of promoting the charities and their messages?”

32

fleet feet sports holiday gift guide 2012

Because it’s all connected. This community, our community, it is strong. It shows up and runs—for fitness, for health, for each other. And it gives back. Our mission is to run, be fit and inspire a healthy lifestyle. Perhaps it’s a little too Frank Capra-esque of me to say, but I believe that there’s a lot of good you can do by being able to present this positive experience to people. They become better people, and if running allows them to have this ability, the world is going to be a better place. Inspiration comes in all sorts of packages. If we can inspire people to be fit, to support a cause, to help another runner, then we’re going to be a better business. We have customers who say to us, “I buy my shoes from you because you guys support the runners on the Lakefront Path” or “… because you’re involved in Team to End AIDS.” It’s a wonderful, warm feeling. But I like to make sure to take a step back to ask myself how we can keep pushing forward, doing more. That’s what we do. When we contemplate our future, we consider our community of runners and how we can continue to make a difference in their lives and, in turn, the lives of others. When we do that, we benefit as runners and people, and we build toward a better city, state, country and world. It might seem insignificant—just signing up for a race. Like the water in the cups, seemingly small gestures have ripple effects. As you reflect this holiday season, you’ll see, like George Bailey did, that what we do and who we are matters. Building a community and giving back to it, that’s a byproduct of everything we do. And you’re an important part of it. What a wonderful life. From all of us here at Fleet Feet Sports – Chicago, I’d like to thank you for all your support throughout the year and wish you and your families a healthy and happy holiday season. We look forward to an even more active 2013.
