The architectural language of the new building has been developed as an intersecting assembly of translucent glass and solid white volumes that transforms throughout the day as light passes through the building skin. Internally, the main ‘white box’ living accommodation are linked by a sequence of “gallery” like spaces; open spaces emphasise functionality and privacy, with a continuous connection of outside and inside spaces; all designed to maximise the fantastic views and light from an elevated every level.

To the South, the translucent faรงade and sculpted staircase spaces provide a buffer to the internal spaces from the public footpath whilst allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the plan. An a ever changing play of light on the facade is expressed externally and internally from the moving shadow of the branches of the mature trees beyond, linking the built and natural environment. To the East and the morning sun the building opens up with expansive views over the blossom trees and towards the Solent. To the West a more secluded private environment framed by the mature trees beyond; a dining room taking in stunning views North with the sun setting amongst the tree line on the Western boundary. At the upper most level a sanctuary for contemplation and tranquillity, for peace and harmony, commanding spectacular views in every direction.

Here the clients drew up a short list of some of the best architects and through careful selection found Fletcher Crane architects who although a relatively new practice gave the clients a vision for the their new home. Architects are artists and like all art it is dependent on good patronage. The Medici family are known as much through the commissioning of Leonardo Da Vinci to paint for them and Michelangelo to design chapels for them as for their banking prominence. In being aspirational and demanding these patrons might not have-yet,

Final Photo | Side Elevation Detail We have been able to deliver a planning approval on a very tight site to the side of the client’s existing end of terrace 1960’s house. The sloping site varies from 3m to 4.5m wide to the rear of the site, including large trees with preservation orders. One planning committee member described the scheme as very clever use of space, and that this type of contemporary design should be promoted as it had not only carefully considered the context but been able to enhance it. The dwelling provides an on site reduction in CO2 of over 20% by using PV cells on the south facing pitched roof, and the incorporation of an air heat recovery system. The scheme is a composition of alternating volumes which occupy the corner site, with surfaces made up of larchwood, white render, dark grey zinc cladding and masonry.

This project is one example of how the practice is able to deliver a completed project within a challenging context and brief. The outcome commercially adds value and exceeded the clients expectations. The brief was expanded upon by carefully crafted additional volumes at roof level, creating two new luxury apartments with intimate views over Mayfair, whilst not compromising the sensitive street scene. The project included the renovation of the previous public house and historic faรงades on Grosvenor Street maximising the retail frontage and area with optimum revenue stream and added value. The design encapsulated every detail including the lighting, space saving furniture, joinery and apartment kitchen designs. Following the successful completion of this project we have been commissioned by the client on a series of similar projects to increase value within their portfolio.

‘The Loom’ is conceived as an apparatus for weaving strands of local business into a collective. The design approach will enable the scheme to have iconic status both locally and throughout Yorkshire giving local business’ a wider presence throughout the region. The proposed waterfront cafe on site, along with the retention of the existing restaurant will complement the business hub providing an alternative venue for meeting, networking and relaxing. Opening up the water front will provide a destination and meeting place for Leeds, attracting people to the area and facilitating exposure for the local business’. The initial brief called for an iconic building, and delivering a commercially viable scheme that was able to meet that criteria whilst responding to the city urban design agenda, historic context presented a great challenge. The proposed scheme has been carefully developed to be appropriate to the site, but also be uniquely crafted, providing a presence at local, regional and national level. The proposals look to marry the external architecture with that of the interior environment, making the most of the fantastic site and location whilst providing the best possible working environment for the buildings owners and occupiers. The design sets out to be environmentally and socially sustainable whilst creating The building design aims to deliver a dramatic river front facade, utilising the expanse of the river and adjacent sheer faced wharf buildings of the south bank as a canvas. The proposal responds to the immediate vernacular, whereby the structural form continues the subtle contortion of the Calls wharf side roofscape. Recognising that the local area was made up of many small businesses, often in sub divided premises, the proposals seek to provide a section of the building as a local business support hub and business / social meeting space. The intention is that by providing a visual focus to the area local businesses will be able to utilize the premises for networking, entertaining, enhanced identity and increased business exposure.

One of the key aspects of the proposal is to deliver a fantastic new public space for the city, a place that will level changes from the street level through to riverside provide an opportunity to allow the proposed open space to be lower and therefore more immediate to the river, allowing the public to engage with and touch the water - something currently lacking with the Calls. The counterpoint to the open river front is the street facade. Working from the same rigorous grid layout two very different experiences are generated by the street facade. Deep columns reach down to the ground vertically, opening up on three grid lines at the various entrances to the building and river frontage. When approaching the building obliquely along the tight historic streets of the Calls the envelope appears as a solid form, in keeping with the masonry construction prevalent to the Calls. Once upon the building the arrangement of the columns will open up to provide tantalizing glimpses of the public space and river beyond. The proposed new public space will provide the area with a unique and distinctive meeting place for the city. It will be a place to shelter from the cold during the winter months and bask during the summertime. found in the historic shopping district.
