In Our DNA New Orleans culture reigns over everything in the city, even the summer camps.

Thanks to programs like the Louis “Satch Armstrong Summ mo” er Jazz Camp, camp ers are immersed in jazz education in the ve ry city where it was invented

It’s no secret that New Orleans is a city like no other. Whether it’s the food, the festivals, or the culture, those who live here know it’s a special place. Especially our kids. They grow up catching beads on the parade route, peeling crawfish underneath the summer sun, and dancing to zydeco on the lakefront. Life here is different. And so are the summer camps. “New Orleans is a great place for summer camps because we have such a strong and unique cultural background,” says Jennie Merrill, director of education for the Southern Food and Beverage Museum. “Camps can reflect the culture and are allowed to veer into the nontraditional, led by culture bearers themselves.”

Specifically, the camps at the Southern Food and Beverage Museum are focused solely on food. They take place entirely in the kitchen or the outdoor cookery space. Across the lake on the Northshore, Culinary Kids’ summer camps are much the same. The focus is on the food and the camps are hands-on. Children learn from the fresh herbs growing in the backyard and the six chickens who live onsite.

At SoFAB, there’s an entire week devoted to Southern food. Yet even when they’re not cooking New Orleans or Louisiana dishes, the kids are taught that learning how to cook is part of the DNA of their city.

Summer camps lik e Upturn Arts pride themselves on reflecting New Or leans culture in th eir programming.

The history of New Orleans is also part of their DNA. The Hermann-Grima and Gallier Historic Houses in the French Quarter are filled with both architectural and cultural history, and together contain thousands of artifacts representative of the 19th and 20th centuries. Children who attend its Courtyard Camp explore 19th-century life

“Campers cook over an open hearth, make 19th-century home remedies, and write and perform their own scripts,” says Anastacia Scott, director of education programming for HermannGrima and Gallier Historic Houses. In that same backyard is the birthplace of jazz. Jackie Harris, founder and executive director for the Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp, says New Orleans is the perfect city for a music camp because it’s “where America’s music was created.” Harris says the jazz camp is crucial in teaching children a passion for the genre. “It’s the only way culture can live on,” she says. Artistic Director Kidd Jordan says the camp works on the “whole child.” That means they’re teaching more than just jazz. They’re also focusing on creating good citizens, compassionate people, and discipline. It’s no surprise that musicians are abundant in New Orleans. Dana Reed, executive director for Upturn Arts, says that’s what gives New Orleans the advantage. “We have so many local artists that we’re able to work with,” she says. “Our city is filled with a plethora of visual artists, dancers, actors, actresses, and chefs. We focus on hiring local artists so we’re bringing the culture of Louisiana into the building on a daily basis.” Reed calls the camps “melting pots” that include a variety of ethnicities, cultures, religions, and abilities. “Our classroom is a true reflection of our community,” she says.

LINDSEY SAUCIER HAS A DECADE OF EXPERIENCE AS A WRITER AND EDITOR WITH DAILY NEWSPAPERS AND EDITORIAL MAGAZINES IN NEW YORK CITY AND THE U.S. SOUTH.

“There are more kids than ever who are fascinated by cooking,” Merrill says. “Add on to that living in a city where cooking is such a backbone of the culture, our cooking camps are an opportunity for kids to engage with food in real time.”

through crafts, games, and project-based learning.
