PET ADOPTION Many factors come into play when choosing the right pet for your family, including how much responsibility your child will have for the pet’s care and your family’s budget.

Your daily routine will determine the most suitable animal • Are you & the kids ready for several walks each day, regardless of weather? If not, consider a cat. • Away for long hours? Again, a cat may be a better option. • Ready to housetrain / box-train your pet? If not, then an older pet may be best.

Costs Vary by Facility Fees vary at different times of the year, with featured specials, waived fees, and free older animal adoptions. Discounts are given for multiple animal adoptions. Expect to pay $125 to $200/dog and $85 to $150/cat, including spaying/ neutering, vaccinations, deworming, testing, and microchipping.

Other costs Depending upon the size of the dog, new puppy vet visits and boosters can range from $250 to $600/first year. Annual well visits are required of all pets in the range of $65-$100, plus annual rabies shots, tests, and flea and heartworm medications. Animals also may need periodic dental care. Depending upon the breed, some cats and dogs also require regular grooming. And don’t forget food, leashes, and toys!

Supplemental pet care Ensure that you have a facility or friend who can care for Snoopy or Sylvester if your family goes on vacation.

Adoption facilities Metro-New Orleans has multiple rescue pet facilities. All feature on-line browsing of adoptable animals and are currently offering services and adoptions by appointment only. Family Biking Do you love biking with your family or would you like to start? We’ve got the best bets for a family bicycling adventure in New Orleans and beyond. And don’t forget your helmets! Lafitte Greenway This 2.6-mile linear park opened in 2015 and cuts a swath from Basin Street in the Tremé neighborhood to N. Alexander Street in Mid-City, just four blocks from City Park. With its 12-foot-wide path, there is plenty of room for bikers, joggers, and walkers.

Mississippi River Levee Trail This popular path runs unabated from Audubon Park all the way to Norco in St. Charles Parish, more than 20 miles away. Novice cyclists should be careful because it can be windy near the water.

Lake Pontchartrain Levee Trail Beginning in Bucktown on Hammond Hwy., this path runs 12.3 miles to Kenner. The trail’s design is practically identical to the Mississippi River levee, only it’s located on the north side of town. Access points include the Bonnabel Boat Launch and Clearview Parkway in Metairie, and the end of Williams Boulevard, near the Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner.

Tammany Trace This 31-mile, Rails-to-Trails conversion was once the bed of the Illinois Central Railroad. Now the scenic route lures bikers, hikers, and campers. The Trace runs from downtown Covington to Slidell’s Heritage Park, passing through Abita Springs, Mandeville, and Lacombe along the way. All five municipalities have trailheads, and the Trace’s headquarters is located at Koop Drive, just north of Interstate 12 near Mandeville.

E H T G N I F F U ST

K N A B Y G PIG IDS ABOU TEACHING YOUR K

T SAVING.

Helping your child develop good saving habits will put them on the path to financial independence as they mature.

HERE ARE TIPS TO GET STARTED:

• Make sure they have money to save. Give an allowance tied to ageappropriate chores.

• Ensure they save their own money. Discuss and set up a plan for how much of their money they must save (like 10% of their allowance and 50% of birthday money).

• Talk about money. Whether you are at the store or paying bills, teaching kids daily financial concepts is key to their understanding the importance of money.

• Teach the difference between “needs” and “wants.” This concept is the bedrock for all the financial decisions your child will make in their lifetime.

• Use some of their money for purchases. Match their savings for a desired purchase, such as video games or clothing.

• Match their savings. Matching their savings, dollar for dollar, is the quickest way to double their money and develop their saving habit.

• Let them see what they’re saving. When they’re young, put their money in a glass jar. As they get older, open up a savings account and teach them how to make deposits, withdrawals, and balance it.

• Teach the concept of taxes. The comedian Bill Murray said it best: To teach your kids about taxes, eat 30% of their ice cream! Most importantly, be a good example for your kids; they spend their lives watching and copying what you do. Talk with them about how your family saves and makes money decisions. Also, demonstrating why it was not a sound financial decision to make a certain purchase may be one of the best financial lessons you can teach them.

HOW TO FIND THE

Perfect Nanny ... or Manny While a caregiver need not possess the powers of Mary Poppins, the right nanny or manny can bring a sense of magic to a household. This special person will be a caring, competent adult with tireless energy and enthusiasm who will come to love and respect your family. Don’t fall into outdated stereotypes: a male caregiver can be an ideal match for your family, particularly if you have a son and your household lacks a positive male figure. The key criteria for this job are experience, qualifications, and a personality that melds with your household. Here are our tips on finding the best nanny for your needs.

Questions to ask a nanny agency: • How much experience does your average nanny have? • How do you handle reference and background checks? • What special training or certifications do your nannies have? • How do you charge and what services are included in this fee? • How long does it take to have a nanny in place? • What if the nanny doesn’t work out?

Questions to ask a potential nanny: • What ages have you worked with? • What’s your parenting style? • Where do you see yourself in five years? • How do you see your role evolving as the children get older? • What’s an emergency situation you’ve encountered? How did you handle it?

Tips to help your child adjust to a nanny: • Give your child advance notice and information about the nanny before they meet. Honestly answer all of your child’s questions. • Do a trial run with the nanny while you are home. You’ll get to know the nanny better, and your child will see you interacting with the nanny in a positive way. • For a child who may experience separation anxiety, record a video message for your nanny to keep on her phone and then play back for your child when they need reassurance. • Emphasize to your child that the nanny is the one in charge when you are away from the house.

5 Must-knows for Swimming Success this Summer 1 Community Pools & Bodies of Water Taking swim lessons before the start of swimming season increases a child’s confidence in their abilities. All swimming should be fun and safe! Swim lessons help make safety second nature for kids of all ages -- whether they’re at camp, a NORD or club pool, or in a lake.

2 Pool Rules Good swimming instructors incorporate safety rules into a child’s lessons and review them with parents. Make your family’s pool rules consistent with your child’s swim lessons, and then review them with your child so that they will follow them at friends’ pools and elsewhere.

3 Overnight & Day Camps Camps almost always require campers to pass a swim test in order to participate in water activities. Parents often assume their child is a better swimmer than they really are, and then both child and parent are surprised and disappointed to learn that the child will be restricted from certain camp activities or pool areas. Don’t assume what your child can do. Instead, find out your child’s true skill level before camp begins with lessons from a qualified instructor. An instructor will properly evaluate your child’s current skills so that you will know what work is needed for them to pass their swim tests.

4 Emergency Training

L OV

Swim accidents are preventable with adult supervision and swim lessons. And although you may think your child knows how to swim, their skills may not be as good as they should be. Remember: children need adult supervision while swimming in and playing around pools. Pro tip: For at-home swim parties, hire a lifeguard. That way, adults can relax, knowing everyone is safe!

5 Accidents DON’T Have to Happen!

IN

Develop an action plan and review it with your child in case of a swimming emergency. WIM If they fall into the water, your child should know to swim to the side of the pool. E S If a M friend or sibling falls into the water, your child should know to throw a long noodle or life preserver to reach them and then immediately call an adult to help (“reach or throw, don’t go!”). Preparing your child for the unexpected is the first step in safety.
