Outlook for 2011 Find the end-user!

Looking back to 2010, we are fortunate to see in our figures that from June/July till year end, sales are significantly better compared to 2009. Of course, 2009 was a crisis year for many of us, and the last half year growth does not mean that we are back at the 2008 levels yet, but we do see a positive trend. This trend is being confirmed by the publications of stock-listed companies in our business. The outlook for the whole of 2011 remains hard to define. First of all, per country or region there are differences in market development. For example, France was not severely affected by the crisis and now shows steady growth. Eastern Europe was hit hard in 2009, but is recovering at high speed. Looking at predictions for the European construction market, it seems that everyone agrees on a slight recovery of that market compared to 2010. New constructions however, will take some time to recover. The need for new buildings is low and financing new buildings is harder than ever before. We have to keep in mind, though, that our market is not just only defined by the new construction figures. Consumer confidence, renovation, maintenance, logistic and industrial production, etc. all have an effect on the expected number of doors, services and parts sold in 2011, both residential as industrial. Keeping this in mind, it is good to learn that objective trend watchers see the following “(door) market drivers”: • Reduced Costs of Operation (Price of door, costs of ownership, operational costs) • Personal Security Burglar resistance, ID-systems, entrance solutions) • Sustainability (CO2, Energy efficiency, recycling, cradle to cradle) • User safety (CE) • Convenience (Automation, control, maintenance) • Design (Appearance, personalization of the door) Where the first “driver” has a pressurizing, negative, effect on door pricing and values, the other five offer major opportunities of increasing your value (turn-over) per door. The challenge for a small- to midsized door company is in exploiting this potential willingness of the end-user to spend more money on his door with regard to these important issues. This is most difficult in big projects, where a property developer or construction company is pushing prices to the costs limits. But, this is not the key-market for our customer base anyway. The best opportunity is in projects where the end-user is your customer. In these projects, being in direct contact with the home-owner or building owner, you must be able to explain that they can receive more added value from you if they are open to listen to your specific solutions. We are convinced that the above mentioned “market drivers” will help you in convincing them. We wish you a prosperous 2011. You can count on us, again, as your “value-chain-partner”, in finding the best ways to increase both our businesses. Online catalogue We know, most of you like to have a real paper catalogue book for exploring all FlexiForce products. Nevertheless, our online catalogue is improved recently. CE-update

“Block-doors”

The list of hardware products, panels and operators that are being continuously added to our main Initial Type Testing Report (ITTR) is growing rapidly. To prevent that with each update you have to order a new, expensive copy of the ITTR, we can offer updates to you where we only pass on the administration costs that we receive from the Notified Body. Your sales team can inform you on this update service. An updated list of participating panel- and operator suppliers is to be found on the CE download section of our website.

Sometimes we receive a customer demand for brackets and profiles to create a so called “block door”. That is, like with a one-piece-door, a sectional overhead door, completely pre-installed in a frame where only the horizontal track has to be mounted on site. The frame is often created by use of the vertical angle and the inter-connecting profile of the horizontal tracks or lintel. After production, the complete mounted door is being shipped to the site where limited additional installation steps are needed. Are you interested in such solution? The list ranks the remodelling (renovation) projects which have the best Return-On-Investment. Number 2 on this list is “replacement of your garage door”, which shows that investing in a new door, increases the value of a house

COMPARE A GARAGE DOOR INSIDE WITH ANY OTHER DOOR OR WINDOW OR DEVICE IN YOUR HOME AND YOU WILL SEE THAT IT IS THE ONLY PART WHERE BOLTS AND NUTS, SHARP TRACKS AND EDGES ARE IN SIGHT. We think that home-owners accept this because they are not aware of any better looking solution, because it is not offered to them. Rapid Prototyping ON FF-TV (YOUTUBE): A MOVIE SHOWING THE DESIGN PROCESS AND PROTOTYPING OF THESE FLEXIFORCE PRODUCTS. When the initial product design phase is done, and we have ready a 3D-file of the product in Inventor (design software), the best way of evaluating if the product will fit the function it is designed for, is to have prototype of it. Today, rapid prototyping is done through an advanced 3D printing process. With a plastic wire, a 3D printer, creates within 2 hours the product you want, by building it up in 3D, layer for layer. This provides much more freedom compared to the old situation, where only after making an expensive mould, the plastic (or steel) product could be visualized. Given the fact that costs for 3D-printing decrease constantly, it is do-able to have more, slightly adjusted prototypes to make sure the final product will suit the demands.

“A 3D-printer creates the product you want, layer for layer.” New with this technology is that it is evolving from Rapid Prototyping to Rapid Manufacturing. One-offs or small series of products can efficiently be made with this process. Art, special designs, or personalized items (like hearing aids) are produced, more and more, in steel and plastic, with 3D Rapid Manufacturing. BMW is looking at parts of the car to be produced specific for one customer. The US-Army is setting up 3D processes to have spare parts “produced on site”,

instead of shipping them with high costs and lead time involved. A complete new way of looking at the production process. World changing technology? Where 3D printers were only a year ago still a major investment of around 25.000 euro, today, a small 3D printer kit is available for 2.000 euro. Also in the growing “personalization” demand on garage doors, this could be a solution for a door company or for FlexiForce products in the future.

We are convinced that also the door business can profit strongly from this new technology. Imagine your service mechanic being on-site, aiming his mobile phone camera at the broken torsion spring, after which the phone directs him to the supplier with the accurate spring details already in screen? Where this “reality browser” technology is already available (see for example www.layar.com), it is still in an early stage phase.

QR-codes

• Same we will do for linking customers for operating instructions of our garage door openers. A QR tag on the cover of the LM60. • You, as door producer, can place a QR-tag at the location of the CE-label. Once the end user needs maintenance or spare parts, his mobile phone directs him simply to the supplier of his door. Or to maintenance recommendations. Or to a movie of your company. Or... • Or a QR-code on our packaging boxes, where the tag leads you to more product information for your warehouse people to read or for direct ordering in the future?

Fully developed, available and very low-entry, are QR-tags or 2D-tags. QR stands for Quick Response. In this magazine you will find black/white coded squares, so called “tags”. Looking like a mini-maze. It works like a barcode. If you aim the camera of your smart phone at these tags, the internet browser of your phone opens at the desired URL-page where you can find more information, or where a movie starts or where an installation manual is displayed. It is an ideal tool to improve inter-action with your customer.

When properly applied, it is more than just an easy connection “from print to on-line”. It is a new, faster way of inter-acting with customers. Generating tags and reading them is easy. How does it work?: 1 You go to a website where you can generate your own QR-code. In the Netherlands: www.qrgenerator.nl where you give in the URL you want your customers to connect to. For example http://www.flexiforce.com/news. In the screen appears your matching QR-code symbol, which you can easily copy/paste to Word or to jpeg format and use anywhere you like. 2 On your mobile phone, often a QR-code reader or 2D-reader is installed. Well, my personal background is that I am 47 years old, happily married, having two daughters and two sons, we live in the city of Arnhem in the eastern part of the Netherlands. My professional background lies in the packaging industry, where I have been P&L responsible for 3 companies over the last 15 years. I have studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University in Delft TU-Delft). And now for the second year in my role as managing director of the Dutch FlexiForce subsidiary.

What is the main difference between your previous industry, packaging, and the door industry? Starting with the similarities, I can say that of course both industries are technically driven business-to-business industries. So that means that there is a lot of focus on the engineering part and on offering technical solutions to customers. The packaging market, is much more consolidated, which means that bigger companies or conglomerates share the market. The level of needed professionalism is, also due to the high capital investments, very high. What I like about the door market, is that it is still a very fragmented market, where different types of door companies and component suppliers, offer a wide variety of products to the market. In fact, the European door industry is a strong, compact niche of the construction market, where totally between one and two thousand companies make the market. Really a small world, but with a lot of entrepreneurial spirit. I really find it fascinating to be a part of this industry now.

When you arrived at FlexiForce, what was your first impression? I arrived in the summer of 2008. As maybe many people can remember, that was in fact still the period that the economy was doing very well. FlexiForce was half-way on what would turn out to be one of the best years ever for them. So, I entered into a company that had a very strong market position. No-nonsense management. It seemed to be focused on innovative solutions. And the brand recognition in the market was almost 100%. So, what was my challenge, you could think? Due to the steady growth over the years, I thought that FlexiForce, at least in the Netherlands, could do with some “re-vamping”. Especially where it came to internal logistic and production processes, automation. But also on listening more to the customers. Due to the main flow of components in a whole-sale company like FlexiForce, it is sometimes hard to adapt in time to offer specific solutions for specific customers. In my first talks with customers they seemed to be “o.k.” with our performance, but we had the image of being a bit arrogant and not being very flexible. So, to cut a long story short, I was hired by Bert Fransens, to give a new impulse to improve the total performance of the Dutch company.

And few months later the financial crisis hit FlexiForce? Totally un-expected? I think that is was at the time that I really started working in FlexiForce, the first signs of a market decline were there. But, at that time, nobody could predict what happened a few month later. It totally changed my schedule of planned activities. Re-vamping became a second priority. The first priority was to make sure that FlexiForce Netherlands could make it through the crisis. In close cooperation with my partners in FlexiForce Group and with the other FlexiForce subsidiaries, we pursued a cost-reduction operation to adapt the company to the new market conditions. Looking back, I am still amazed about the speed of which we all worked together to achieve these reductions. And amazed on the effectiveness of the result. End of 2009, we had lost a lot of turn-over, but we still were a financially healthy company. Of course, it is very hard if you need to say goodbye to some of your employees, but in the end, FlexiForce came out of this re-organization a lot stronger and sharper than ever before. In 2010 we notice now that everybody in FlexiForce is a lot more customer-driven, more flexible and more creative to grow market share again and of course most of all, to serve the customer! With that, a big part of my initial challenge was achieved!

If you were to describe FlexiForce today in 5 words what would they be? Consistent. Solid. Partner. Solutions. Promising.

Why consistent? You can say a lot about FlexiForce, positive and maybe also some points which need improvement but for our customer group, the small- to midsized door producer, there is one thing extremely important. The worst thing that could happen to him, is that his supplier would let him down where it comes to delivery performance, product quality, channel conflicts, pricing, and so forth. Many of our customers are structured in such a way that the owner of the company is responsible for engineering, purchasing operations and sales. That can only be done, if he has found suppliers that take away his worries. What FlexiForce has been trying to achieve over the last 31 years, is to be consistent. Consistent in the quality of the product. Consistent in having that one hinge on stock when the customer needs it. Consistent in the pricing policy. And finally, not being a competitor of her own customers. So, in short, with FlexiForce you know what you can expect, yesterday, today and also tomorrow. That is maybe our biggest asset.

And promising? I see still a lot of potential for improvement. Personalized approach and solutions for each customer. A company that is making 10.000 industrial doors a year, needs a different package compared to a company that is active in the garage

“ There is not ‘one-solution-fits-all’ anymore.” doors with, say 1.000 doors per year. For example, the first mentioned company wants from us special products, made exclusively for him. And a smooth logistical supply of bulk components. The “1.000-garage-door” company is happy when we offer him the complete hardware set with operator, configured online with CREATE and supplied to him as one package with which he combines his panels before sending it to the site. So, there is not “one-solution-fits-all” anymore, we have to personalize our offerings for each customer. If we can achieve that, the growth of both FlexiForce and her customers are “promising!”.

Are you happy with the progress that you have made in two years of “re-vamping” the Dutch organization? 1,5 years you mean! We are definitely not there yet, but we made a lot of progression, although really the ones to ask about that are our customers of course. But, yes, we are today more flexible than before. Some examples? We do special 24-hour parts service to a big customer, which demanded special packaging and coding for his “third-party-warehouse” process. We took the complaints on our white hardware products seriously and are now in control of a high-quality solution. It took some time, but now we are there. We now regularly invite customers to come to our Inspiration Centre, where they spend one complete day, discussing with me, our sales team, Ton Peterse (Group Technical Manager) and Frank Goedhart (Group Marketing Manager). It is wonderful to see that at the end of such a brain-storm day, both the customer as well we at FlexiForce learned a lot. Often a new base for expanding the relationship and the mutual business. We increased our visits to customers.

We hired a new sales manager, mister Ole Baek, to guide the sales team in the improvement process. We finalized a residential hardware set department, where the customer orders, coming from the Create configuration, are picked and packed. We reduced the number of back-orders and wrong deliveries significantly by following an internal campaign “OTIF”, On Time In Full. If you realize the costs and hassle involved in a door company when we make a mistake in supplying him the wrong hinge or only half of what he ordered! I am proud on the achievements of the Dutch management team and all people in FlexiForce in their willingness and efforts to improve. I am lucky to work with highly motivated people!

How do you benchmark yourself and your company against other FlexiForce subsidiaries? There is a lot of similarity in the companies of FlexiForce, especially in the European ones. There are strong communication lines between my fellow MD’s also caused by the fact that we often are each other’s customer or supplier. Where it sometimes is difficult to get proper feedback from independent customers, the feedback from my intercompany colleagues is always there and without hesitation! That is excellent, because it keeps the total FlexiForce organization “on its toes”. There is a difference in the maturity of companies and markets of course. Julian Lopez in Spain runs a different size of operation and is focused on a smaller group of customers. This gives him the advantage of being really close to his customers day-by-day. In my position, managing a bigger company, there are days (sometimes weeks) that I am not in contact with customers. Of course our sales people are, but I am more on a distance compared to Julian. Given these differences, we can learn a lot from each other, which is inspiring.

How do you see the European market developing? It is difficult to see one clear direction in my opinion. One thing is clear, the crisis did shake up the national and European markets. FlexiForce has seen direct competition starting and leaving the market again. We see that our biggest customers and the global door companies try of course to intensify their dealer network, which gives pressure on smaller door companies to decide what their mission in business will be: Producing or re-selling. I do have the feeling that each customer that I talk to is now more aware of decisions and choices to be made. Some leave the mainstream door market and focus on “technically difficult doors”, some focus on “residential only”, some go for “the shortest lead time”. It has become clear that when competition is tough, due to the smaller market place, being “stuck-in-the-middle” is not the best place to be. But on the positive side, we see enormous creativity and entrepreneurial skills. So I am not at all worried about our market. As long as we, FlexiForce, do a good job and as long as there are good panel suppliers, there is still enough market potential for our core customer group.

Why is FlexiForce “hammering on” about the configureto-order services like industrial hardware sets, full vision sections, pre-assembled torsion springs, etc.? Coming from outside the door business, it is remarkable to see that in this industry, it looks like customers are worried to become too dependent on a supplier. Where in other industries co-creation, co-partnerships are more a rule than exception, our customers seem to think that outsourcing part of their production process is equal to giving up their independency. That is of course not true! FlexiForce keeps on “hammering” about this because we know for sure, that the mid-sized door company is often better of when his fixed costs are turned into variable costs. We produce on a weekly bases, torsion springs, powder coated, greased, striped and packed in plastic. Ready in 3 days! Today we produce/assemble springs for 2.000 doors per week. The efficiency in that can hardly be reached by an individual door company. What I like to make clear is that having a partnership with a supplier offers major opportunities. In fact it increases the freedom of a door company instead of limiting it. Lower costs, variable and maximal flexibility! It is good to see that I am not “shouting in the desert”, proven by the increasing number of customers that appreciate our Configure-to-Order services.

The price pressure going on in the market is high. On door level, but does this also have an effect on the component prices? Almost a cliché but still true: “Price is not everything”. And I mean that. A customer sometimes claims for a lower price, but what he in fact claims for is “lower total costs”. Of course, prices of a supplier have to be within a certain acceptable range. But, instead of simply increasing our discounts or lowering our prices, we always are willing to sit down with a customer and determine together what would really be big steps in saving costs. In most cases, we together come to the conclusion that a lot can be saved by logistical solutions, configure-to-order assemblies from FlexiForce, new door configurations or simply using alternative, cheaper products from our range. In other words, jointly reducing costs. You know that one of the reasons that we offer electrical operators and accessories, is that it increases the turn-over with a customer. And with that, it improves his conditions and his operational efficiency. If you calculate that back to the piece-price of the operator, we are in many cases the most economical supplier for operators. Just as an example. I think that FlexiForce will never be

the cheapest supplier, but in the total package that we provide we might still be the best cost-effective supplier. Look at the wide range of products, our R&D efforts, our CE-certification program, our inventory, warehouses close to the customer, quality control. Those are all things that in our vision lower the total costs of our customers. Having a trustworthy supplier. Remarkable that despite all said being true, in day-to-day practice, we find that FlexiForce pricing is in most cases very competitive anyway! Of course also caused by our higher volumes compared to others.

What achievements or results will make you a happy man in 5 years from now? Haha! That is still far far away in the future. Anyway, I would be very happy if we in FlexiForce Netherlands would still be the best supplier, no better said, the best PARTNER, that customers could wish for. And even happier if we achieved that by the efforts and motivation of the people working in FlexiForce, which I think form an excellent base for realizing our goals. I am convinced that the Barneveld mentality of “two feet on the ground and working hard” combined with really listening to our customers and being creative in offering specific solutions, we and our customers will manage to grow. That would make us all happy men and women, don’t you think?

Seals and astragals An overhead door in closed position, has to be “sealed” to prevent air or water from entering into the building. This is the main function of door seals. A door has 4 locations with possible leakage gaps: 1 The horizontal seam in between the top panel and the lintel 2 The horizontal seam in between the bottom panel and the floor 3 The vertical seams in between the sides of the panels and the wall 4 The horizontal seams in between all the panels. In a door where windows or a pass door are integrated, of course seals are applied between window and panel and between the pass door and the frame in the overhead door. In this chapter of the FlexiForce University, we explain the features, application and the “nice-to-knows” of (1) top-, (2) bottom-, (3) side- and (4) intermediate seals.

To execute the main function optimally, seals are made of soft and flexible material. The quality level of sealing the door, is defined in the doors’ Initial Type Testing Report (ITTR), where air permeability and water penetration classes are tested and declared. With that it defines the experienced quality of the door and its competitive position. Next to this, the bottom seal has an even more important function, where it comes to safety. On a closing door, it is the safety-“buffer” between the moving heavy door panels and an obstacle or person under the door. For this, the bottom seal can be equipped with a safety edge system which ensures that the maximal allowed peak-force is not exceeded. Concluding: The quality of the seal can make or break the quality and safety of a sectional overhead door.

As said, good results for air permeability, water penetration and peak force safety are determined by properly designed seals of high quality. Important for the quality level is: • The right material for the right application. For example: EPDM rubber with softness of 60 Shore for a simple bottom seal. • The design of the seal. The specific movement of the door in relation to the building, puts different demands on the shape and form of the different seals. • The design of the total construction. To ensure the CE classes declared, the seal may not be subject to excessive wear and tear during a certain life span. • The installation of the seal must be easy and time efficient. • The packaging must be designed to allow the seal to keep its needed shape or come back to that shape after installation.

1. Top seals On most sectional doors the top seal is fixed on the top section of the door. On cheaper doors, a seal is screwed directly on the top of the panel. But in Europe, a typical top seal is made of EPDM rubber, it slides into an aluminium retainer top-profile (1038H-series) and features one sealing lip.To reduce costs and/or in situations where the available build-in height is limited, the top seal can also be fixed to the lintel. In that case a side seal is used as top seal, fixed on a steel angle profile (915VR-series) or fixed to the wall with use of clips (art. code: 1083). Our extensive CE testing program at SP-institute in Sweden has taught us that a top seal often is the weakest link in getting good test results for air permeability. Since there is also a trend for increasing the insulation and with that the thermal values of sectional doors using thicker door panels FlexiForce has recently introduced a strongly improved top seal with double sealing lips (1036D). We highly recommend opting for this newest seal, in combination with the 1038H-series of aluminium top profiles. For fingersafe panels and traditional industrial panels.

2. Bottom seals The typical bottom seal is made of EPDM rubber and slides into an aluminium retainer profile (for example 1038-4040 etc.). Exception is the smart design of the Epco panel, where the door panel itself is equipped with a groove to fit in the bottom seal (1035QSE) directly, without the need for an extra aluminium profile. Saving installation time and costs. In the market there are many types and qualities of bottom seals available. Starting with cheap plastic ones to expensive ones with integrated contact switches. So here again, it is important to understand, for which application which seal applies best. The CE-norms state a maximal peak force that a closing overhead door may exert on any obstacle hit while closing. This means that, depending on the door size, door weight and door speed, this demand can only be met, by using the bottom seal as a buffer between the door and the obstacle. The time that it takes to deform the seal or to activate the sensors in the seal, must be enough to ensure that the door is stopped (and reversed) in time before crushing objects or people. Our test program shows that it is not always easy to meet the peakforce demands only by applying a safety edge (industrial) or by proper software setting of the door drive (residential). For this, the bottom seal needs a certain height, to compensate for the time-delay.

The FlexiForce range of bottom seals starts with a simple bottom seal for applications with no further requirements, but even that seal is produced out of EPDM as the base of quality. EPDM is oil-resistant and suitable for outside use. For use on automated industrial doors, the applied seals are equipped with a “chamber”, used by pneumatic (air switch) safety edge systems or by optosensor (photo-cells) safety edge systems. These safety sensors need to be activated as soon as the closing door hits an obstacle. The height of these seals, the quality of the chamber (and inner surface quality) and the shape make these seals more difficult to produce and therefore more expensive compared to simple seals on manually operated doors. 3. Side seals In Europe side seals are mounted on the vertical angle which holds the vertical track. Because of the fact that in the USA most doors do not have vertical angle profiles, the side seal (referred to as “stop mould”) is fixed to the outside of the building pressing against the panel-exterior. One type of side seals is available in flexible material, packed on rolls (f.e. 1090 seal). This offers a theoretical advantage of reducing cutting waist, but the quality of the seal is lower and the installation is less easy compared to the other type: Side seals made of a combination of a rigid part (PVC, regenerated material) and a flexible part (TPE, elastomeric, returns into original shape). Packed in bundles. FlexiForce article codes 1085-.. and 1088-….. The way these seals are produced is called co-extrusion, extruding two types of materials in one process. The TPE sealing lip has a smooth surface and the end has a radius thus preventing scratches on the door panels. The life span of the side seal is influenced by wear and tear, caused by damaging the seal or by the movement of the panel surface against the seal. To prevent this as much as possible, the vertical track is placed under a small angle (wedge) to the vertical angle profile and wall. Together with the adjustable hinges, this construction assures that the door panels are released from the seal very quickly during opening. Only when the door is completely closed, the panel presses against the seal. The life span of a seal should be declared in the maintenance manual of a door, with recommended replacement cycles. Article 1094-40 has

4. Other seals • The seal in between the door panels is supplied by the panel manufacturer, already inserted in the groves of the panel. Only with full vision sections, a seal has to be placed by the installer. For this FlexiForce seal code ARS applies. • Also in full vision panels, the sealing of the glazing against the aluminium is achieved by applying seal type ARU, universally for single and double glazing. • Specially designed pass door seals are available for use with our industrial and residential pass door systems. See pictures. • On our RESL side sliding door, the bottom seal is, due to the side movement of the panels against the floor, made out of brush material (art. code 1087B1). • To give the door an extra protection against water penetration and wind loads, we offer the rubber threshold profile, or often referred to as storm/ water shield, type 1030.
