‘What an impressive event’ was the comment of one of the new helpers on Pixie Day. And she was right. Although it didn’t officially open until 2.30pm, there were people at the fete by 2.00pm, and as the afternoon wore on so the crowd increased.The Pet Show, the bar, the refreshments and the stalls
were kept busy all the time, the sound of smashing crockery never stopped, and, though the intention was to have a temporary closure at 4.45 so that people could get ready for the Revenge, there was no chance at all of that happening. The Kagamusha drummers from Exeter, supplemented by our own Taiko group from Ottery attracted a large crowd, and Brass Class, the junior section of the Town Band, was a very welcome feature as well. The Ottery Help Scheme benefited to the tune of some ÂŁ60 from the skittles.
After the Revenge, in which the entertainment was unfortunately not as good as we had hoped, the fete resumed in the evening with a Punch and Judy Show, and more live music, and ending with the traditional firework display. The sunshine kept lots of people there meeting friends and family, and they eventually consumed pretty well all the food and drink on sale. Behind the scenes there were enough volunteers for all the preparations and clearing up, Continued page 2

though a few more stallholders in the afternoon and evening would have been welcome.The day ended on a rather sad note, however. At midnight the last helpers were leaving the field. Most of them had been there since early that morning, and would not be getting to bed for another couple of hours. Then a small group of seemingly tough but inwardly childish and inadequate teenagers could find nothing more to amuse themselves than to obstruct the people trying to clear up. They even put themselves in danger by lying down in front of vehicles or jumping on the bonnet of one of them. They smashed the window of a caravan, and stole a bottle of drink from a car. Similarly, on Sunday after every scrap of litter had been picked up, leaving the ground in pristine condition, a group found ‘pleasure’ in scattering some of the contents of the skip around, finally setting it on fire in the evening. But the pleasure gained by such crowds of people far outweighed these irritations, and we look forward to another successful day next year. For Gazette Advertising Call 01404 815111

OTTERY ST MARY TOWN COUNCIL At the June Full Council Meeting there were further discussions regarding the Skateboard/BMX Park at the King’s School. Students from the School attended the Meeting and spoke in support of it during the public questions session. I would remind you that you are welcome to attend all Council Meetings with there being an opportunity for you to speak at Full Council and Planning Committee Meetings. Agendas for all meetings are displayed on the seven Council Noticeboards around the Parish and are also on the Council’s website. The Council has received information that the Planning Inspectorate has refused the application for the diversion of Footpath 46. This is the footpath along the eastern side of the River Otter linking Tipton St John and Ottery where because of erosion near Wiggaton Devon County Council had applied for a diversion. The Council was surprised and disappointed at this outcome and has asked Devon County Council to ensure that the
path is reinstated as soon as possible so that everybody can once more enjoy this footpath in its entirety. You will I’m sure have noticed that the flower beds around Ottery have been planted with summer bedding. This work has been undertaken by St Loyes Enterprises on behalf of the Town Council following the withdrawal of this service by East Devon District Council. Unfortunately it is not possible to install the hanging baskets usually found around the monument on Silver Street and on St Saviour’s bridge.Also the members of Ottery in Bloom and their supporters have been busy and their containers are now planted up and once again will help to make the town look very attractive. Tipton St John Residents’ Association, with the assistance of a Grant from the Town Council, has also planted up its flower baskets on the River Otter bridge. Writing this just after Pixie Day I’m please to report that Ottery is now quiet again with the Pixies hiding away again

Ottery St Mary Gardening Club News We were very lucky with the weather on our trip to Paignton Zoo on Tuesday 15th June and I must say it is the best zoo I have seen. Having had three children of my own I have been to quite a few but this one seems to have the animal’s best interest in mind. They have large enclosures and the animals look to be contented. For anyone not keen on zoos, a little boy summed it up by saying he had seen giraffes in
books and on television but did not realise how big they were or how long their tongues were. Did anybody see the picture of the lioness and tawny owl in the Daily Mail? One thing I was disappointed in but had been warned of and that was the flora and fauna. I expected it to be separate but the greenhouses with the birds in were very good. The next event in the Gardening Club is the quiz night at Otter Nurseries on Wednesday
Pam and Jenny complete the London Moonwalk
Saturday 15th May was the night that we had been training for since before Christmas. It was The Moonwalk, a 26.2 mile walk around London, starting and ending at Hyde Park, walking through the night. The money we raised goes to Breast Cancer charities and we were both very proud to be amongst the 15,000 people that took part. We had great fun on the night and really enjoyed the vigorous training which paid off. We finished the walk in a good time and there were no blisters or other injuries and we would be happy to do it all again! We feel that if we could do it, so could you! You need to register early if you are interested.You get lots of help and support with your training etc. The support from friends and everyone who knew we were doing the Moonwalk has been amazing. Local food at Sustainable Ottery’s Community Market New food stalls selling certified organic beef and lamb, beautiful cupcakes made in Ottery, and amazing homemade chocolate are proving to be very popular at the monthly Community Market in Ottery St Mary. The stalls are a welcome addition to the thriving market, which already sells locally produced, organic fruit and vegetables, freerange eggs and egg products, a huge selection of preserves and chutneys, apple juice and home-baked goods. All this food is produced within 5 miles of Ottery! There is also a Traidcraft stall, which sells those other essential staples, such as tea, coffee, rice and dried fruit, which cannot be grown locally. These Fairtrade goods are sold at a price and in a way that benefits the producers in the developing world. This month’s market takes place Saturday, 31st July from 9.30am to 12.30pm at the Institute in Yonder Street.
West Country Embroiderers On Monday 7th June Gwen Hartley showed the group how to use “sumptuous fabrics” to create a patchwork of silks, velvets and gauzes which were then embellished with embroider stitches. Everyone enjoyed the day rummagaing among the bags of materials brought by Gwen. Last month Ann Holden, the group representative demonstrated making cup cakes from old jumpers. Quite a tasty looking dish of cakes was produced by everyone. In July Thea Hope (founder member) will teach how to make calico gardens. The group meets at The Institute, Ottery St Mary on the first Monday in the month at 10.30am to 3.30pm. What is happening about Sainsbury’s Store? “What is happening about Sainsburys?” is a question I am frequently asked. Quite often someone wants to know when the building work will commence, and when the store will be open. What better way to let Ottery know the answers to these questions, than to write an article for The Gazette? First of all some history: Sainsburys were granted planning permission for a 20,000 sq ft store by East Devon District Council (EDDC) on 15th April. Cllr David Cox and I (the EDDC Cllrs for Ottery Town), the EDDC shopping consultants (GVA Grimley), Ottery St Mary Town Council (OSMTC), and the EDDC planning officers all felt that a 20,000 sq ft store (representing 70% of Ottery‘s retail space) was too large. English Heritage and EDDC‘s own Conservation Officer also had concerns. Unfortunately the EDDC Development Management Committee (by seven votes to five) ignored the arguments for a smaller store. Subsequently OSMTC, David Cox and I were concerned about the traffic impact of such a large store; we feared that Ottery might become gridlocked.We therefore looked at how it might be possible to
reduce the traffic impact. One of the measures we looked at was the possibility of two-way traffic at the western end of Hind Street, to reduce the congestion we feared in Broad Street.This would have allowed people from the west of Ottery (communities such as Broadclyst, Rockbeare,West Hill and Whimple) to return home without having to go through Broad Street. The additional road width necessary, could have been achieved by putting the pavement behind the wall. A meeting took place with the EDDC Planning Officer and the Sainsburys traffic consultant. The traffic consultant insisted that his report was robust, and insisted that there would not be severe traffic congestion resulting from store traffic. There was an unwillingness to

depart from the traffic report and the planning conditions agreed on 15 April. It was also felt that a two-way traffic flow would have an adverse impact on some of the properties on the south side of Hind Street, would be impractical, and there could be safety implications. As a result, consideration of the introduction of two-way traffic in Hind Street is not to be proceeded with (of course had there been a real possibility of introducing it, a key element would have been to consult with local residents and businesses). However we did get a commitment to look at upgrading the pedestrian crossing at the eastern end of Hind Street, and to look at other measures if the traffic situation is worse than predicted after the store opens. Following the 15 April decision several Ottery residents wrote to the Government Office of the South West (GOSW) asking that the decision be “called-in” (in other words for the Government to take the decision
away from EDDC). English Heritage is understood to have made a similar request to GOSW. When certain legal agreements have been made between the planning authority (EDDC) and the applicants (Sainsbury) the planning authority issues a Decision Notice to the applicants. Issue of the Decision Notice was held up because of the consideration of traffic impact, and also because of the consideration by GOSW. In mid June GOSW advised that they had decided not to call the planning application in. Issue of the Decision Notice is likely to be at the end of June or early July. The next stage of the process is for the applicants to agree the conditions with EDDC. On completion of this – building can start! When building does commence is, of course, up to Sainsburys. However it appears that they may be in a position to do so in late summer. Interesting times await us in Ottery! Roger Giles

Ottery’s turnpike road - last to be built - not built to last At the Bowd Inn, just a short way along the road to Sidmouth via Bulverton, is a milestone now almost the only reminder that this route was once a turnpike, the last to be built in Devon. In 1844 parliament passed “An Act for making and maintaining a Turnpike Road from Sidmouth to Collumpton” and a group of trustees was appointed to raise funds and carry out the work. The hope was to link Sidmouth and Ottery with the Brunel’s new London to Exeter railway at Hele near Bradninch.They borrowed over £5000 (about £400,000 in today’s money) and set to work at the Sidmouth end. In year one they spent all they had raised and more (£5789) on the new road between
Sidmouth and Ottery - which would appear to be as far as it ever got. Expenditure included £1005 for land purchase, £3568 on contractors, £300 for the surveyor and £568 on legal fees. The line of the new road from Ottery to Sidmouth follows an earlier road as far as Tipton, but then takes off in a new alignment for much of the rest of its course.The section across the Goyle at Tipton and up around to Woods Farm represented a significant engineering challenge and must have cost a good deal of the cash raised - large embankments carry the road across the Goyle and support it as it skirts around the steeply sloping hill towards Woods Farm. The regularity with which the

modern road here is under repair, is the result of a less than thorough survey of the route. Despite today’s highway technology bits of it still periodically slip down into the valley. In the summer of 1850, the Sidmouth antiquarian Peter Orlando Hutchinson was on a mailcoach from Sidmouth to Ottery when the horses took fright and the coach came to grief, hurling the outside passengers, including Hutchinson, into the hedge. No one was seriously hurt but shortly afterwards he published a first-
hand account of the accident in the Exeter & Plymouth Gazette. Although he made no direct criticism of the road, the Trustees decided to borrow another £1250 (£97,320 today) for “improvements”. Income remained unimpressive however, much of it disappearing each year in maintenance. While Exeter was making £70 per year per mile of its 147 miles of turnpikes, Ottery/Sidmouth was making only £19, dismal even for a rural turnpike. In 1865/6 the 21 year term granted to the Trustees by the 1844 Act expired - just at the moment the railway arrived at Ottery, and the work to extend the line to Sidmouth was already under way. In spite of this, the Trustees decided to press on with a renewal raising the tolls in the hope of better returns. By 1874 the railway connection to Sidmouth was finally completed, and in consequence the Trust threw in the towel with debts of £14,337/13s/0d (just over £1.1million in today’s money). This will be a poignant day as it will be the last event to be held in Feniton Chapel before it is sold on the open market. The day will close with a service conducted by the Reverend Danny Beavan. Guides celebrate centenary in colourful floral style This year’s Ottery In Bloom theme is based around the Girl Guides colours of blue and yellow with some pink. This is to celebrate the organisation’s Centenary Year. The Guides, once again helped to plant the upright containers at the Land of Cannan. The compost used in the planters was provided by Otter Rotters. The flower beds, which have been passed back to Ottery Town Council control from EDDC, were planted by St Loyes Enterprises. The job of watering, dead heading and weeding all of the planters in the town and the flower beds is carried out by volunteers. There is no formal structure or anyone with overall responsibility. Chairman of Ottery In Bloom, Sarah Clarke said “We rely on local people taking part and looking after the plants when they are passing. This is not ‘someone else’s job’, so if you want them to stay looking nice - do something to help!”. There are water butts around the town which can be used, although a bottle of water in a very dry planter is better than nothing. The planters on St Saviours bridge will be put out soon and have been provided by Otter Nurseries and planted by students from the Kings School.
Ottery In Bloom are in the process of preparing the portfolio and presentation for the South West In Bloom judging. The portfolio is an excellent way to show case the town and the committee are keen to include any other projects that are focused on improving our town in any way, not just flowers. Also any conservation projects that are happening around the town would be a wonderful addition and great way to earn points. One day Spanish workshops for the Summer
A series of One Day Spanish Workshops have been arranged for this summer at the Council Offices in Ottery St Mary. These workshops are a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the language for a total of six hours and benefit from a series of activities specially designed to learn quickly with the minimum of effort. In a very relaxed and happy atmosphere we will be covering trouble-shooting sessions of grammar, vocabulary, listening, speaking techniques, and ‘get by’ strategies. The new audiovisual facilities at the Council Chamber will allow those attending to view TVE International recordings and will provide them with an inside view of Spain and South America. The day will include a typical Spanish “bocadillo” and a “copa de vino” at a local pub.Tea and coffee facilities will also be available during the workshop. SUSTAINABLE OTTERY NEWS COMMUNITY VEGETABLE SHOP The recent closure of Wendy’s veg shop has created a big gap in the retail market in Ottery St Mary. Costcutters and Coop fill a small part of that gap but certainly are unable to provide the variety that a specialist shop of it’s kind can offer. Unfortunately this means that shoppers are having to go out of town to fulfil some of their vegetable shopping needs. Every town needs a vegetable shop, and with sustainability in mind, the idea of a Community Shop has been put forward to Sustainable Ottery to provide an outlet for local producers and growers. There are many benefits to a shop being run on a community enterprise basis. Keeping food local means we know where our food is coming from and who is growing it, food miles down and prices down to name a few.Also in principle it would not be run for any one person’s gain, it would run on a not-for-profit basis so that all net profits would go back into benefitting the community.
A venture of this kind will need a committed core group of people to manage and steer the setting up of the shop. It will also probably need a paid manager to run the shop as it is a committed responsibility, along with volunteers and there is no doubt that a shop of it’s kind would command enough takings to be able to sustain a paid position. Sustainable Ottery would like to explore the potential of this idea at a meeting to be held at the Town Council Offices at 7.30pm on Thursday 15th July. Dear Sir, I would like to comment on Mrs Sheila Heathcote’s letter in the last issue of the Gazette objecting to Sainbury’s coming to Ottery. Unfortunately we do not all have access to the internet to be able to buy on-line or even run a car. Presumably this lady owns a car and is able to shop at a supermarket outside of Ottery whenever she likes. So she has a choice! Maybe she should put her car in the garage and shop in Ottery instead for a week! Beryl Wood

Ottery St Mary artists John and Helen Wakefield will have their highly distinctive work on show at an exhibition at A La Ronde, Summer Lane, Exmouth, which will run from Friday 2nd July to Monday 14th July 2010. Helen and John have been working professionally as artists for a number of years and have exhibited in many parts of the UK. Helen is a printmaker and batik artist. She studied at Chester School of Art and Maidstone College of Art and began work as a typographer. Her prints are not produced as illustrations and she sees her series of Malta’s temples as her most important work to date. It is an ongoing project. John studied at Beckenham School of Art and from there went on to be employed in graphic design studios in London. However, watercolour painting and drawing were always on his mind but he kept them separate from his profession. He now works mainly in watercolour, charcoal and mixed media. His preferred subjects range from industrial scenes and landscapes to semi-abstracts. The exhibition will include both new work and some earlier pieces from both artists in a variety of subjects, media and treatments.
Dear Sir, I wholeheartedly endorse the sentiments in Sheila Heathcote’s letter in your last issue: many of the points she raised were ones I and many others made in vain to the deaf ears of the Planning Committee. I quote from an article (June 8th) in the Guardian headed ‘Supermarkets don’t regenerate communities - they hoover money out’. Written by Andrew Simms, Policy Director of the New Economics Foundation, it referred to evidence from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation which concluded that a Tesco-led regeneration scheme in Leeds had been disastrous for the local economy. Based on evidence from NEF’s own research and elsewhere, Simms states inter alia that: Claims of supermarket job creation hide the net destruction of employment, since their profits come from reducing operational costs of which a key one is labour. • Money spent in locally owned enterprises is more likely to stick and re-circulate. • Conventional street markets often provide cheaper fresh fruit and vegetables. (And I might add for Ottery, fresher because so much can be local) • Community relationships wither because people have fewer conversations in supermarkets.(My italics) • The big store’s negative impact on other local enterprises destroys social capital, dissolving the glue [holding] communities together. NB: this is not off-the-cuff prejudice or mere hearsay - but the findings of solid research. Is it too late to save our thriving Ottery community? I sincerely hope not. Heather Wheeler

OTTERY SILVER BAND DIARY Busy, Busy, Busy! The Band enjoyed their first playout of the season at the May Fayre at Cadhay. As usual this was a really good day out despite a few showers! However the Band carried on in true professional style sheltered in their usual spot under the big tree. Another good playout was at the Bicton College Open Day. The band were situated by the tea tent this year and seemed to go down well with the passing crowd. By the time this goes to print we would have played at Otter Nurseries on Fathers Day. The band play outside for a couple hours in the afternoon entertaining shoppers. It is always nice to play in our local town. It also gives the Band an extra chance to run through their programmes in preparation for playing down at Sidmouth in Connaught Gardens. Concerts at Connaught Gardens, Sidmouth began on Tuesday 22nd June 7.45pm-9.00pm and the band will be there every Tuesday untill the end of August. It is a beautiful setting and is definately a highlight for the band , why not come along and enjoy a relaxing evening of music, at no charge.
The next playout will be at the Cotleigh Fete on the 17th July, another nice country fete. We are also going to be joining forces with the Rotary Club for a concert and cream tea at the Tumbling Weir on Sunday 22nd August, more details to follow. The Brass Class training band have also been practising hard under the leadership of Gayle and Verity. Brass Class now have 10 members, all of which very talented and the main band looks forward to welcoming them in the future. Having performed at the Pixie Day on 19th June, Brass Class will next perform at a coffee evening on Friday 23rd July, 7.30pm at the Institute Hall.This will be a chance for the youngsters to show off their talent to family and locals alike. Posters and tickets are available from the Tourist Information Centre, Ottery or on the door. The Brass Class have been proudly showing off new music stands and banners given by a generous sponsor. As always the final term of the pre-school year is proving to be a busy one. The children have been helping to plant up and care for our outside containers. Some have flowering plants and others have fruit and vegetables.When these are fully grown we hope to be able to pick and use them for our snack time. We would like to thank Ottery in Bloom for providing us with some of the seeds and Sarah Gibbons for co-ordinating this task. Whilst talking about our outside play areas, we are hoping to undertake major improvements to the main playground over the next year or so. We would like to be able to use the space a good deal more whatever the weather.We are thinking how best we might achieve this whilst keeping within conservation area requirements. The ever popular end of term party and family evening will be happening in July. We would like to take this opportunity to also express our appreciation to everyone
who has supported our preschool over the past 12 months, parents and children, committee and staff, May Kenealy and Beatrix Godfrey (our regular volunteers), those of you who have hired the hall for your events and those who have attended our fund raisers, the people of the town who drop off items for craft activities or unwanted toys and those who display their posters on our fence. Escot Camp Wild is Open for Business
The opening of Camp Wild represents an important step in the continuing diversification by John-Michael and Lucy Kennaway of Escot, their East Devon rural estate of some 1100 acres. Escot is already well known as the site for the highly successful Beautiful Days music and arts festival, and venue of 2010 concerts by JLS and James Morrison. Last year Escot Park won the 2009/10 South West Small Visitor Attraction of the Year Award. Escot has long been a centre for conservation and nature education with current programmes including, for example, the re-introduction of beaver and water voles and the restoration of historic water meadows. Much of Escot’s conservation effort involves work in association with the Tale Valley Trust. (See the website www.talevalley.com). Keen to break new ground in environmental education, in 2009 Escot advertised widely and offered use of the estate to the person with the most
powerful and appropriate new idea. From a field of well over 100 candidates, Victoria Siddle-Virok was the clear winner with her concept of an eco-education centre, based in a yurt village and centred on a uniquely exciting curriculum. Planned activities draw on the natural resources both on and outside the estate. Forays out to the Jurassic Coast, for example, are important elements of the programme. Her approach has been developed over several years working in California. We believe it to be unique in the UK. Camp Wild has bunks for 64 in four dormitory yurts. Hot showers, toilets and a field kitchen are provided. A mighty 28ft communal yurt provides a central point of focus. The yurts are sourced locally here in Devon. Yurt Village at Escot Camp Wild programme during July and August. Thereafter Camp Wild environmental education courses become available for schools and private groups throughout the year. (The yurts have wood burners!) Escot has been surprised but delighted by early bookings for children’s summer camp from as far afield as Taiwan and Spain. Some of these are from families who value the opp-
ortunity of a mixed ‘time together / time apart’ holiday during a part of which the children will enjoy Camp Wild while the parents spend time together staying in the local area. If this trend continues it might become a significant new reason for families to visit East Devon, thereby establishing Escot as a resource of regional as well as local importance.

King’s School PTFA News At the time of writing we are putting finishing touches on one of our biggest events of the year – the Year 11 Prom on 26th June. A report will follow next month, however, we must give our thanks to all of you who have agreed to help on the day and a huge thank you to Otter Nurseries for offering a plant display to decorate our photo area – I hope to send a picture in next month. A few decisions were made at our last months meeting resulting in some of our hard earned cash being distributed as follows. We are to support a new extra curriculum club run by one of our Teachers to teach students about the world of Journalism, we have agreed to donate over £400 to help buy up to the minute camera equipment to get them started. Over the years many hundreds of our Students get involved
with the Duke of Edinburgh Schemes and also the Ten Tors training and event. Our supply of camping equipment is over used and despite valiant efforts behind the scenes and out of hours by our Teachers and Volunteers to repair and extend the life of items. We have reached a time where new tents etc are necessary, the budget is low so the PTFA are delighted to donate nearly £450 towards purchasing some replacements. Our next meeting is Tuesday 20th July in Ottery Cricket Club prior to the end of school year match between Staff and PTFA – join us! Arts Project celebrates Woodbury Castle heritage Borders, Landance 2010 Landance brings people from the local community together to create contemporary dance performances in areas of outstanding natural beauty. This year’s setting is the renowned local landmark of Woodbury Castle, which will be used both for inspiration and as a natural theatre space. Thanks to funding from East Devon AONB, Dance in Devon, Dance South West and Arts Council England this promises to be the most inspiring Landance project yet, involving dance, music, visual art, costume design and film. Landance Open to All Participants are invited to embrace their creative side and take part in a series of workshops, leading to public performances on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th July. Children and adults will work closely with five arts professionals within the natural landscape and can choose to take centre stage as a dancer, perform as a musician, develop visual art/costume design or film a documentary of the project. MIXING CEMENT Hello and welcome to July’s tip of the month. Now the sun is shining, and people are working out doors, we have been asked a lot about how to mix sand and cement. What quantity of each to use, and how to make concrete. So over the next two months we will cover all bases. First of all, we will start with the quantity required to mix. If you have a small job to do, our convenience size bags of sand and cement or concrete mix (5kg, 10kg, 20kg) will be ideal. As they already come with the correct amount of cement required for the job, which makes it nice and easy. If you have a large area to do, then our larger builders bags (2530kg) of sand, cement and chipping would be the most
cost effective way of doing the job. But for this you will have to work out how much cement you require for the job. It’s a bit like making a large cake really, but just not quite as nice to eat. Each of the ingredients need to be measured by volume. To get the proportions right, people usually do this by shovel load but, unless you have experience, it is better to measure the cement and ballast (or sharp sand/gravel) by actually using a bucket.You tend to get more ballast on a shovel than cement so just counting the shovel loads can be misleading. Below is a table of how much cement is needed for what job. this is just a rough guide as every job is different.

Last month the Gazette reported 19 year old Ottery student Ben Matthews attempt to cycle across Canada from coast to coast in an attempt to raise £10,000 for Help the Heroes charity. He is being accompanied by his Canadian friend Brad. This is an extract from his blog dated Sunday 20th June 2010. “So I’m still in Medicine Hat. Brad and I cycled through some of the worst rain southern Alberta have had in a long time, and this has caused some pretty substantial flooding. Luckily we’ve been hosted by Bonnie and Doug Dirk from warmshowers.org and have waited for the floods to subside, and the highway to reopen. Being Canada, the roads system isn’t really that intricate, so going around the flooded section means a 200km detour. What was intended to be a one night stop for just me, turned into a 3 night stop for Brad, and 4 for me. Despite the last two days being brilliantly sunny and warm, the highway is still largely underwater. LION’S CORNER
We have numerous events lined up in the near future, and I hope to see some of you both in Honiton and around and about. As I have already reported, Honiton Lions will be holding a Classic Car and Vehicle show at All Hallows on Saturday 24th July, which is also Honiton Charter Day. Our burger stall will be in operation, along with others, so do come to see us and take part in the fun. On Sunday 8th August we will be holding our Annual Duck Race on the River Otter at Weston, finishing at the Otter Inn. Draw tickets will be on sale shortly in both Honiton and Ottery St Mary on successive Saturdays beginning on Saturday 10th July near to Honiton Church. Prizes for the first ducks home are £100, £75, £50 and 2 prizes of £25. Smeatharpe Air Day will be held on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd August. Our Lions will be there on the Saturday with a Classic Car/ Vehicle Rally, and other attractions. Also on the Saturday, there will a display by a Spitfire, and another vintage plane from the second world war.
When you read this article our new President will have been installed, along with his various officers.The new President will be Lion Brian Richards who I am sure is well known to many of you.The event took place at the Turks Head, which was formerly the Honiton Motel. Following the appeal for equipment in last months Gazette by the Junior Section of the Ottery St Mary Cricket Club, Honiton and District Lions Club have made a presentation of £250 to them. (See photo above).This money will enable equipment to be purchased for the Under 11s and Under 12s. Exmouth Lions Club held their Annual Charter Anniversary on Sunday 4th July, by holding a boat trip from Exmouth up the River Exe, with a barbecue on board. I’ll let you know if I was sea sick! Talatones Handbell Ringers I enjoy doing these articles on behalf of the bells for the Ottery Gazette but I do run out of things to say sometimes, because the main thing is to encourage more people to come and enjoy the bells and how many times and different ways can you say that? I have had my little moan and now on to some good news, on July 5th Jane and John Willis from Okehampton are coming to show us how to play ‘four in hand’ bells. That means you ring two bells in each hand and it can only be done with the smaller bells. It’s going to be very interesting. We now have several bookings.The one at the Priory is confirmed for July and believe it or not we have two for 2011 one in January and the other for Christmas 2011. That’s what you call advance booking. Anytime you would like to come and see us you are welcome. Just come and listen to the beautiful sound from the bells and decide whether you would like to join us.We make a lovely cup of tea. Otter Valley Art Society
The annual OVAS exhibition will be held in the Ottery St. Mary Institute on Friday August 6th to Sunday August 15th at 1.00pm. We enjoyed watching Jane Leitch draw her husband at the monthly meeting of the Art society and some of us found out how difficult it really was when we tried at the workshop the following day. OTTERY SCOUT GROUP On Friday14th May, Ottery St Mary scouts hiked 6 miles, which felt like a lot more, to get to a field just outside of Sidmouth, on top of a what felt like mountain. This was where we would stay for 2 more days and nights learning how to fend for ourselves. When we got there we started straight away by putting up our tents. It was going to be a long weekend. The next morning everyone was up and ready except for some of the leaders.Well, if we were ready, then they should be was our thinking, so we went over with our pots and pans, making a somewhat loud noise the leaders would say, and before long a lot of mumbles of ‘go away’ were coming out of their tents. After Breakfast we were then off down to Sidmouth in our Patrols to get our food which would last us for the weekend. We had all planned out our
meals but didn’t know exactly how much we would stick to that idea. When we got down into Sidmouth we all bought the stuff we needed such as bread, pasta and cheese at the cheapest price and we had quite a lot of money left over as we were given £5 per person. We decided to spend the rest of the money on cakes, sweets and fizzy drinks. After the long walk back up the hill out of town we started on our meal making skills, setting out are eating area and collecting some wood and for our fire. We were also taught the art of chopping wood with an axe, using saws and how to use our pen knives safely, most of us far too close to cutting ourselves apparently!

After cooking our meals, which we all had to do on open fires, we were called to the scout leaders and asked to prepare our ‘skits’ which we would perform that night in front of the fire.There were lots of skits which are really just acts or sketches which are funny. When the evening came we all gathered around the camp fire to invest some new Scouts. The people to be invested were Ali Adams, Saphie Herbert and Kate O’Brien who were all
given a flaming torch each to light the camp fire. There was lots of singing, skits and really bad jokes but everyone enjoyed it and I bet they would do it again. When morning broke the next day everyone woke up to the sound of rain on their tents.We had to cook our breakfast and then we were split into two groups within our patrols to go orienteering.We had a map and ourselves to find the markers that were dotted around the woods. Most of us thought we would give up half way through, but kept going on at the thought that we could earn some points for our team. At the end of the Sunday, when it was time to go home and after the torrential rain we had the ‘Flag Down’ ceremony to end the camp.We were also to learn that some of our older scouts had, over the weekend, completed the Chief Scouts Gold award. They were Molly Barker, Jack James and Hazel Salmon. It was then time to lower the flag and go home. I’m sure that all the scouts would say it was one unforgettable weekend, lots of new skills were learned and fun was had. Katie Richmond (Scout)

The sun shone all weekend on Ottery Cub Scouts The Sun shone all weekend as we took the Cubs camping.The location for the weekend was the Sidmouth Scout site, Salcombe Regis. After arriving on Friday, the Cubs pitched the tents themselves (with a bit of help from the parents). We tried to tire them out by playing lots of wide games on the field. After a huge campfire the Cubs had a hot chocolate and some cake before finally dropping off to sleep around 1am! Dawn woke them around 5am so we had a number of grumpy Cubs (and leaders!!) on Saturday. However a walk to the Donkey Sanctuary soon perked everyone up. The staff at the sanctuary were brilliant, very helpful and taught the Cubs how to groom, feed and walk the donkeys. After a picnic lunch and an ice cream we walked back to the campsite and decorated our tents based on Countries in the World Cup. Sid Vale Scout Group Leaders then visited the site to teach the Cubs Archery. A few more games followed tea, then another huge campfire this time with the addition of marshmallows heated on sticks. Luckily the Cubs were pretty tired by this point so all were
in bed by 10.30pm - we didn’t see them again until 7am on Sunday morning - bliss! After packing up camp (again with some assistance from helpful parents) the Cubs went home exhausted, grubby and happy! Not a single drop of rain fell the whole time we were
away helping to make this a very successful Cub camp. Thanks must go to those parents that helped at various times throughout the day; the Donkey Sanctuary for a great few hours; and Sid Vale Scout Group for teaching us Archery and letting us use their field.
R.I.O.T. 2010 Only 52 days left before the coach will be departing from Ottery taking a group of 32 Scouts and Explorers and 8 leaders across to Ilsfeld. The 9 day adventure is going to be fun packed with activities including white water rafting in Austria, visit to Stuttgart, day at Tripsdrill,Woodfest market in Ilsfeld plus many other things. There is a meeting for all parents to attend at the Scout Centre on Thursday 1st July were they will receive a final briefing for the visit.

FROM THE CHURCHES CHURCHES TOGETHER IN OTTERY As you have seen each of the churches is putting on extra events as well as their usual services. Why not do a tour of them and see what is on offer? We are always pleased to see you and to hear from you as well.
SALVATION ARMY As I write I am anticipating the commencing of 125th Anniversary celebrations. By the time this is read it will be over. A report of events will be included in next month’s contribution. As I looked back at some of the old documentation I discovered a copy of a lease signed by William Booth in 1893 for the use of a property on Chapel Lane that we actually occupied for around 80 years before moving to Hind Street in 1976. Our next event will be our Harvest celebrations in September when Majors John and Lorna Smith, national Adult and Family Ministry Officers, will be our special guests. During his training to be a Salvation Army Officer Major John spent four months running the Salvation Army in Ottery, although I’m not sure how ‘in charge’ he was in the days of Mrs Waterfield and Miss Townsend. After all the excitement of the anniversary our regular Friday events continue with Coffee Morning and Over Sixty Club every Friday morning and Lunch Club on the first Friday of the month. Our worship meeting is at 3.00pm every Sunday. Everyone is welcome to come and share with us at any of our events. Steven Watson (Captain)

UNITED REFORMED CHURCH Women’s Breakfast This event takes place on July 10 at the Tumbling Weir beginning at 8am. This month’s guest speaker is Elizabeth Cozens from Tipton who for the past 10 months has been working with science teachers in Nepal and Bangladesh. Please contact Ruth 850747 to book your place. On the Saturday evening from 6pm they will be joined by other friends and members of the congregation for a summer barbecue. Following the success of this event in recent years Ottery United Reformed Church, opposite the Co-op, invites shoppers and tourists to a cuppa in the front gardens. Some people take the opportunity to visit the interior of the church which has played an historical role in the town’s past.The first such event is on the 24 July from 10.15am until 11.45am. Goodbye Maureen! Ottery URC says a fond farewell this month to Maureen Guillem who is moving with husband Bunny to Kent. She has an endless capacity for work, it seems. In the dozen years she attended the United Reformed Church she has kept an eye on the building, edited the monthly newsletter, served coffee to hundreds of people, organised the Women’s Fellowship and help transport older people to services. She will be sorely missed.

THE PARISH CHURCH We are beginning to have the usual influx of visitors to our lovely old churches. It is sometimes rather difficult when a coach tour arrives in the middle of the Sunday morning service but we try to make them as at home and welcome as possible even though language differences can pose a problem! We are still in need of volunteers to offer to do turns at stewarding during the week. If you are interested contact the church office and you will be put in touch with the group that can give you the details and help to show you the many interesting parts of our building and its history. It is not difficult...a love of people and the enthusiasm to show them where things are and to let them enjoy the stillness too and have the opportunity to pray if that is their wish. You will meet some most interesting people and hear their stories as well. We are very fortunate to have many distinguished performers wanting to use the church because of its lovely setting and formidable acoustic. Do come along to experience some of the lovely music making. The Flower Festival ‘Showtime’ is from September 17th – 20th please put that in your diaries but before that there is to be a coffee morning to raise necessary funds on July 10th at 10.00am in the Feeoffees’ room. Play and Praise for the youngsters is on Thursday 15th at 10.30am in the church and on the 16th we have a team of ringers from Nottingham visiting us. We are preparing to say ‘Goodbye’ to Jane Ollier as she finishes her time with us as curate. She is to be Rector designate of St Matthew’s, St Mark’s and St Sidwell’s in Exeter. We will be going along to wish her well as she is installed at a service in St Matthews on
ST ANTHONY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH St Rita’s day was celebrated recently in our community; everyone enjoyed a gloriously sunny day and people came from far and wide to join with our community and celebrate this very special saint’s day. On the Sunday a Hog Roast and Barn dance was held: again we were fortunate with the weather which is rare indeed in these climes! We meet for Mothers’ Prayers every Thursday at 10.30, so please feel free to join us.Also on Sunday 25th July, our church is hosting the monthly Christians Together in Ottery Meeting at 6.30pm where we shall be considering how we can best pray for the needs in our community. The Catholic Women’s League will be organising this service and we would love to see any new friends who might like to come along to join us. We hope to see Fr Joseph this summer to tell us first-hand of the needs in Sierra Leone.

The Songs of Praise held at the Connaught Gardens was a great evening and we were blessed by lovely summer weather. Bishop Bob spoke and expanded on Matthew 13: 31-
33 as well as interviewing people who gave testimonies as to how God had been at work in their lives. It was only a year ago that +Bob had been one of the captured at Pixie Day during the Bishops in Mission days. It is good to know that the bell ringers and the clergy have freed themselves again so we are safe in the knowledge that the bells can still ring to welcome anyone and everyone to the church for prayer.
NEW LIFE CHURCH The church continues to meet at the Kings School main hall at 10.30 am on Sunday where we enjoy worship, biblical teaching and Sunday School groups for the children.We are always pleased to welcome visitors and are happy to pray with anyone who needs healing or who has any concerns. Our Youth Group, for 11 – 18 yr olds, recently went on their annual weekend away where they enjoyed a mix of lively activities and biblical teaching.The group meets every Friday night at 7pm. ‘Groundbreakers’, a kids club for children aged from about 7 – 10 years old is continuing to go well. The club meets at the New Life Chapel on Yonder Street, on Friday nights during term time from 6 – 7.30pm. Our annual ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Junior Iron Man’ competitions are to be held on the afternoon of July 18th. The event, held in Alphington, consists of a swim-run-cycle-run-swim and is hotly contested by men, ladies and teenagers in the church – anyone is welcome to enter. Last year also saw the first ‘Junior Iron Man’ which was thoroughly enjoyed by children aged between 7 and 11 yrs as they undertook a short run-swim-run. In glorious afternoon sunshine, our ‘Open Gardens’ day at Cadhay on Thursday, 2nd June, was a great success. Many visitors and loyal supporters came along to take a leisurely walk around the beautiful gardens and then to enjoy either a cream tea, or tea and a choice of cakes from a wide selection, made by our volunteers. We are grateful to Rupert Thistlethwaite, the owner of Cadhay, for allowing us to hold this event in such a lovely setting, which enabled us to raise £440.00 for Hospiscare. There are still more open gardens to visit in aid of Hospiscare, details of which are in the booklets available from our shop. If you haven’t already visited any of these, now is the time to treat yourself to some interesting gardens, full of interesting ideas and often having both plants for sale and homemade refreshments, supporting your local Hospice at the same time. The Ladies Midnight Walk on the 22nd May, had over a thousand walkers, on the warmest night of the year so far, to walk
a 7.5 mile route around Exmouth. Since the Exeter Chiefs were unable to attend due to their new training schedule, the Exmouth Rugby Club jumped in with superb routines to YMCA etc. and got the ladies into the party atmosphere. The event is the Hospice’s biggest fund raiser and to date has raised over £25,000.00, the final amount to be available at a later date. A big thank you to those of you who supported our local ladies! The exciting premier of ‘Jane Eyre the Musical’ which is to be performed by the New Ottregians in aid of Hospiscare, starts on Tuesday July 27th until Saturday July 31st inclusive, at Kings School.Tickets will be on sale at Bagpuss and Stagestruck, for which the price will be £8.00, £4.50 for children – three tickets for the price of two for the first performance on Tuesday night.Tickets for the Saturday night buffet, prepared by our team of volunteers and helpers, will be an additional £7.00 and must be bought in advance. On each night there will be a bar, raffle and free parking.

We are always very grateful to receive your donations; no donation is too big or too small here at the shop. But, I would respectfully ask that no VHS videos go in the bag or box. We find it very difficult to store these items so it’s easier now not to accept them. I love to get games here in the shop for adults and children alike, but please no broken or incomplete toys, games or puzzles. It
costs Hospiscare over £5,000 a year to dispose of refuse from our shops alone, so I thank you in advance for your assistance in this. It would also be great to get some small electrical items, as I have decided to sell them here in the Ottery shop, so please remember us when you want to get rid of that old toaster etc!! Whitehaven: a much earlier disaster
When earlier this year I prepared my August contribution to Kentisbeare Parish Magazine I couldn’t possibly have imagined another tragic occurrence was drawing near. I had headed the piece:A Fateful Crossover. Each year as the 12th August looms I am called back to that date in 1947 when I found myself as a conscript (pictured here) boarding an afternoon train at Cullompton, destination RAF Padgate, via Bristol Templemeads. Chaps who had experienced training camps were only too pleased to supply info much of which I didn’t like the sound of.You had to test the water.Too right you did! On with the journey. From Bristol to Crewe I was in a full carriage. Opposite me sat an attractive young lady, fair locks escaping from a straw hat, above a blazer and skirt. We chatted away and I learned that she was travelling to her first teaching post. She was full of it. Time went on and she grew drowsy and fell asleep. As I watched a pretty probationer I’ll admit I’d taken a fancy to, she very gradually slid forward and, not wishing to waken her, I eased my knees across to save any embarrassment. I was pleased to be of assistance. I believe it was around 8.00am when we arrived at Crewe where we went our separate ways. My lady, on a high, was on course for Whitehaven on the Cumbrian coast as I carried a contrasting mood to Padgate to be kitted out over several days before assignment to another RAF station and a couple of months square-bashing, with full supporting programme.
As I was being shunted around Padgate I envisaged a young lady settling in and preparing to receive a class at the beginning of a chosen career for which she had trained. All set fair. Alas, alas! Fate allowed my presumption just two days. On 16th August I saw “Whitehaven” writ large on national newspapers. There had been an explosion at the William Pitt Colliery the day before and, in spite of all efforts over five days, 104 miners perished, the majority through carbonmonoxide poisoning. And there was another grave statistic: 342 fatherless children. The harrowing thought of an apprentice teacher, a girl barely out of her teens, having such a tragic experience with its dreadful aftermath thrust upon her possessed my mind. I pictured the opening of a classroom door at the start of a new school year. I saw …..No more words! Such an occurrence cries out of itself. And there was I, in retrospect, off on eight weeks holiday. Derrick V. Rugg

Busy Otters Playgroup News Its been another fun packed half-term at Busy Otters Preschool. This half term’s theme has been ‘Books’ including the popular favourites ‘Dear Zoo’, ‘My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes’ and ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. The children have enjoyed extending the themes of these stories to their craft sessions and have made some fantastic creations, including making clay animals and icing biscuits. We will keep you posted regarding the exciting move of the pre-school to the Ottery Primary School site, but we would like to assure parents that Busy Otters will continue to be run by all current staff and committee members as an independent charitable organisation, providing excellent pre-school sessions as usual. The staff and committee at Busy Otters would like to extend a warm welcome to parents who have happily joined the committee putting in valued time and effort to make Busy Otters a continued success. The Annual General Meeting of the Ottery St Mary Heritage Society was held on June 15 at the Institute, Ottery. In his chairman’s report, Robert Neal gave a comprehensive review of the activities and achievements of the past year. He said that since the closure of Museum Exhibition at Salston Manor Hotel, when displays and exhibits were moved to secure storage at Honiton, Trustees were now concerned that after almost three years in sealed containers, much of the display material is showing signs of deterioration, and the town needs a museum building soon if further serious and costly damage is to be avoided. Despite the Society’s frequent excitement at the prospects of a suitable building being identified, it was obvious that without generous funding the prospect of a Heritage Museum for one of the oldest and most historic towns in Devon remains elusive. The summer exhibition at The Institute over the August Bank Holiday weekend was hugely successful with visitors packing the hall for the entire five-day period. The exhibition commemorated the outbreak of World War II in 1939, and focussed on the home-front here in Ottery reflecting people’s memories of those austere days. Members were thanked for their hard work in staging this successful event. Ongoing projects include the Blue Plaque scheme in the town, the Coleridge Memorial Project Group, in co-operation with other key organisations, to secure a fitting commemoration for the most famous and accomplished Otteregian of all time, and the Luke Coleridge Memorial Prize, sponsored jointly by the Heritage Society
Ottery Heritage Society AGM and The Devon and Cornwall branch of the Western Front Association.This is a monetary prize to be awarded annually for the best essay submitted by an East Devon Scholar on the twin themes of Sacrifice and Remembrance. Thanks to Hon. Secretary Chris Saunders, successful outings have been arranged to Tuckers Hall Exeter, St. Nicholas Priory Exeter, and an imminent repeat visit to the Hunter Flying Club at Exeter Airport. Peter Harris and Oliver Wilson have continued with their amenities programme of maintenance of seats and benches throughout the parish, plus care of the stocks and the upkeep of our famous Tumbling Weir. Membership of the Society remains steady at around 210, making it one of the strongest organisations locally, and recruiting of new members remains a priority. Monthly meetings continue to draw large audiences of 60 to 70, the quarterly ‘Heritage’ Journal, under the stewardship of Chris Wakefield, maintains a high standard – a reflection on the quality of local researchers and contributors. The Hon.Treasurer, Jim Woolley, delivered his report on the Annual Accounts confirming a satisfactory financial position. These were adopted unanimously by the meeting. Mr John Brown was re-appointed as Independent Examiner of the Annual Accounts. The three officers of the Society were re-elected for the coming year: Robert Neal as Chairman, Chris Saunders as Hon. Secretary, and Jim Woolley as Hon. Treasurer.All committee mem-
bers agreed to stand for the coming year and were reelected: Hazel Abley, John Pilsworth, Chris Wakefield, Betty Williams and Oliver Wilson. The highly popular Annual Coleridge Birthday Lunch is held at the Tumbling Weir
Restaurant in October. Last year the guest speaker was the distinguished author Graham Davidson MA. Details for the 2010 lunch are to be advertised shortly. In closing the meeting, the chairman paid tribute to the dedication and hard work of members in the various enterprises of the Society which had been well rewarded.
New Heritage Society book on 14th century Ottery The Ottery Heritage Society has recently published the first in its planned Historic Records series. Called “People and Places in 14th Century Ottery St Mary”, the booklet includes a transcription of the 1327 tax list for Ottery, never before published, and with additional materials from other sources, offers over 200 names of Ottregians of that time, together with information about where they lived.There is an introduction to the lists to help with getting the most out of them. This will be invaluable to family and local historians or anyone interested in the history of the town and parish. Dr Cox has stepped down as Senior Partner and has handed the baton into the very safe hands of Dr Dilley.

WHIMPLE The extension at Whimple branch surgery will be completed at the end of June. We aim to re-open the surgery again to patients in early July. There will be two extra consulting rooms plus some additional facilities for the staff working there. We have made some basic improvements to the waiting room to bring in more light, which should be more pleasant for you while you wait for your appointment. We are also planning to install a computerised check-in screen for patients to use when they arrive, which will alert the doctors and nursing staff when you arrive for your appointment. We appreciate your patience and tolerance while the surgery has been closed, and we are particularly grateful to Mr John Discombe and the Victory Hall Committee for their co-operation with the disruption of the car park.

CARERS HEALTH AND WELL BEING CHECKS Carers often tell us that they put the health of the person they care for before their own. We know that if you are busy looking after someone, maybe balancing that with other commitments to family or work, it can be difficult to take time to think about your own health We have obtained special funding from the Department of Health that allows us to offer free health checks to carers for a limited period. The check takes about an hour and it covers safety and warmth at home, living and caring safely at home, your own health and healthcare, questions about check-ups vaccinations and screening, work, education and leisure, healthy lifestyle, caring role and tasks. If you are a carer aged between 40-74 who does not have a current chronic disease we can also offer, at the same time as the carers check, a blood pressure check and a vascular check. This is a simple fingerprick blood test to screen for blood cholesterol and diabetes.

CAR PARK Thank you for your patience while the car park was partially resurfaced. We have repainted the disabled bays and provided a larger hatched area alongside the entrance to the pharmacy. This has given pedestrians, particularly those using a wheelchair or with a pushchair, a wider and safer access to the pharmacy.
URINE BOTTLES Unfortunately NHS stores can no longer supply us with a stock of urine sample bottles that we can give out to patients. If you are asked to bring in a sample of urine you can use a clean container with a lid from home or buy a urine sample bottle from your local pharmacy.
THE HELP SCHEME Our volunteers continue to be as busy as ever and we are extremely grateful for the time they give so freely. In order to keep the service going we have been busily fundraising. As well as the spring raffle Annie Haines and Janet Farrow were kind enough to put on a play for us, Louise Saunders chose us as her nominated charity for the London Marathon and Malcolm Henson made a sponsored parachute jump. We are very grateful to them and all those who supported the events.

SLIP! SLOP! SLAP! It is summertime and hopefully the sun will shine all summer long so it’s time to: Slip on a shirt, Slop on some sunscreen and Slap on a hat. Skin cancer is a largely preventable disease but the levels have almost doubled since the 1980’s. There are 2 main types of skin cancer: - Non-Melanoma which is very common (more than 84,500 cases in 2007) and usually easily curable Malignant Melanoma which is much more serious but less common (10,600 cases in 2007)
Do people survive skin cancer?
Non-melanoma skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma: BCC, and squamous cell carcinoma: SCC) is very common and is usually detected early and is not life threatening.Melanoma survival rates have increased in the last 20 years and are now amongst the highest for any skin cancer with over 80% of men and 90%
of women surviving for more than 5 years. What should you look for? Melanomas- A mole that is different from the rest that is changing in any way. Sometimes they can bleed or start itching. The moles may suddenly look very black or you may even notice a different looking new mole. A melanoma can be a large or small mole. A brown or black streak under a nail. A common site for melanomas is on the chest or back whilst in women they are commonest on the legs. Non melanoma skin cancers (BCC, SCC)- A sore that never heals-Translucent growth with rolled edges-Waxy feeling scar-A flat or slightly depressed lesion that feels hard to the touch. What to do if you are worried Make an appointment to see your doctor at Coleridge Medical Centre and we can review the area you are worried about. Most of the time we can review your lesion and reassure you. The majority of non melanoma skin cancers can be treated with a cream called Efudix without the need for surgery or referral into hospital. Some non-melanoma skin cancers will need referral to specialist skin doctors either
due to their size or position.All suspected melanomas will require urgent referral to the specialists at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. How do you protect yourself from sun damage and skin cancers? In 1981 Australians were very worried by the rocketing numbers of skin cancers and so the Slip Slop, Slap campaign was introduced and this significantly raised awareness of the need to protect the skin from the effects of sun damage and how to do it. It is attributed to slowing the rate of growth in skin cancer in Australia. So… Slip on a shirt: any shirt will do but try to make sure it is one that covers your shoulders and the V of your neck. Ideally if you are going to the beach get the whole family UV protection T shirts, even supermarkets sell them now. Slop on some sunscreen: Choose a factor 30 sunscreen and put it on when you get dressed and before you go out and then reapply regularly throughout the day. Always take enough sunscreen for the day if you go out walking or to the beach.Slap on a hat: the wider brimmed the better as it protects your face AND the back of your neck Any worries about your skin? Not the Hailstone Hop ‘Not the Hailstone Hop’ is being held after the resounding success of last year’s ‘Hailstone Hop’, held to support the victims of the terrible floods of October 2008. every week we do a different routine. All this and the bonus of raising much needed funds for the British Heart Foundation. Each of our classes is one hour long (this will be the fastest and funniest hour ever) and we use Salsa/Reggaton music to exercise through Salsa Dance step. We also run six week help sessions (optional) using the British Heart Foundation Literature to help try to get the balance of food right as well as exercise. Several of our ladies who have been coming to us have managed to not only lose weight, but also to maintain their weight. Some ladies have also lowered their blood pressure and feel a lot fitter and healthier. It has to be said that although
we are NOT a diet club in the sense of dieting. We do work with people trying to break old habits and start a new change for life diet. You are what you eat! The word diet actually means ‘a way of life’ and this is what we work with. Our motto is ‘Getting the Balance Right’ - life is not a rehearsal so make the most of it. If you look after your body it will look after you. As we have just had what seems to be never ending football with the World Cup I will be a little cheeky and say there are so many reasons to kick start a new healthier life style and there are so many excuses not to. Brian, who has been in optics in Torquay since 1961, disposed of his practice in 1988 and subsequently started a domiciliary service for patients who are housebound and unable to visit a high street optician. Knapman Hayes expanded into Ottery St Mary some time ago and even though the firm is based in Torquay,
Eiohn lives in Chudleigh so visits to the town are well within reach. There is no charge for the eye examination or visit if the patient is over 60 or registered as housebound, and spectacles are free if the patient receives income support or pension credit guarantee credit. Brian said: “The main problem we find is that people are unaware that this service is available, and seem very surprised when they discover they can have
their eyes tested at home, free.” “We are not in competition with high street opticians as we only do home visits. In fact, several local opticians already use our services for their own patients.” Eiohn explained: “We offer a complete service. If spectacles are needed, we supply them from a large selection of modern frames, both metal and plastic, and some designer frames. challenges and fears will be faced over the course of the weekend (more by the teachers than the children) as activities like abseiling, zip wire, rock climbing and the trapeze are taken on. Back in school, the Year 5 and 6 performance of ‘Gel’ is coming together well. The children are all working ard to learn their lines and all the songs. It promises to be quite a show at the end of term. We also have our ey Stage 2 Sports Day to look forward to on
Wednesday 30th June (weather permitting) and this is followed by the Key Stage 1 Sports Day on Thursday 8th July. Sandwiched in between these, we are holding our PTA summer fete on Friday 2nd of July after school and it will run from 3.30 - 6.00pm.The fete this year will have a World Cup theme (surprise, surprise) and lots of activities and stalls are planned for the afternoon. Before we know it, we will be running headlong into the summer holidays...
Bumper 40th birthday for Seaton Tramway! As we move through the summer term, we’re continuing to get out and about as much as possible.Year 5 recently took part in their residential trip to Wembworthy. Each class spent three days away and had the opportunity to camp out. The children all helped out with making meals and clearing away and they needed to be fed well so that they could carry out the night walk. Torches were taken and the children were led around the woods to ultimately play the Bat and Moth game in the darkness. As
if this wasn’t enough of a challenge, the legendary ‘Mud Run’ was also faced by the children. All the children lined up on a bridge before wading through the mud as quickly as possible. Speed was of the essence here because, if they went too slowly, they would get stuck in the mud. Beth and Freya summed up the feelings of all the children when they got back saying, ‘It was a really fun trip and we had an amazing time!’ Year 6 are also off on their residential trip to the PGL activity centre at Barton Hall. Seaton Tramway celebrated the BIG 40 in style (weekend 5/6 June) when they had a glam rock theme, in honour of the decade the tramway was first brought to Seaton. The weekend celebrations must have been sprinkled with Fairy dust by the Colyton ‘Fayries’ who organised the concerts, with ALL proceeds going to charity, as the sun shone on all those who participated! At 5pm on Saturday evening Nicholas Owen (the BBC news reader) launched the open topped birthday tram, specially decorated in 70s style, before the original line up of Brotherhood of Man sang proudly from the top deck. The tram then travelled, with VIP guests on board and led by the Seaton majorettes Fire and Ice to Colyton where the night’s revelry began with the concerts. The guest performers were Diamondogz, the highly acclaimed Bohemians (Queen tribute band) and of course, Brotherhood of Man. Both a bar and food were available on the night and the evening’s merriment culminated in a BIG
birthday firework display that lit up the summer’s night sky. Sunday 6th June brought more sunshine, for Seaton Tramway’s 16th Classic Car Show. The theme this year was ‘spangles, sequins and stars’ to remain in keeping with the BIG 40 theme! Forty years ago saw the golden era of Ford Cortinas, Capris and Vauxhall Vivas in a perfect array of psychedelic colours. Perfect for the newly created category of 1970’s vehicle, to help mark this special birthday.

Show writer thrilled with New Ottregians performers Pictured here is the adult section of The New Ottregians. In the centre of the picture (in the grey striped dress) is Ruth Nunn, the writer of the upcoming show ‘Jane Eyre - The Musical’. She is so delighted that we are doing the show- written only 4 years ago - that she came down from Bristol, where she teaches and lectures at university there, to see rehearsals in progress. And she is so thrilled with the calibre of the performers that she has hired a cottage to stay for the week of the show in Branscombe! We have a large cast of children in the show too but as they only rehearse until 9.00pm they had already gone home by the time the camera came out! We are in the last few weeks of rehearsal now and the cast are busy learning lines,dances, and making costumes and props. It is so exciting to be doing a show that no other adult amateur group have yet to do Over the last two months, I have reported who will be playing which parts in the New Ottregian’s production of ‘Jane Eyre – The Musical’ with some notable omissions (apologies Dave and David). However, there is one very important group not yet mentioned. One of Toni and Helena’s objectives when they started the group 16 years ago was to give young people an opportunity to appear on stage. And how they have met that objective! This year is no exception. We have a group of talented young players – vitally important because they are the future. Maya, Hannah and Alec have been listed already and in addition we have Esme, Hazel,
thanks to the internet and my husband for finding it. It is very challenging and particularly demanding on the two lead roles of Jane (played by Karen Rugg from Ottery Primary School) and Rochester (played by the well known Ottery postman, her husband, Rick). The two have very fine voices and
are superb actors too, well backed up by a very experienced and talented cast. The show opens at King’s school at 7.30 on Tuesday 27th until Saturday 31st July. All proceeds, as usual, will go to Hospiscare and we are hoping to make as much (£5000) as we did last year.

Looking back at June This month has been mainly about getting the new Committee and management in place in time to be ready for next season. The Club has a new Chairman in Brian Barnden and Brian and the new executive committee have been busy interviewing prospective managers for the first team. I can report that Dane Bunney has been appointed manager. Pre-season training starts 1st July at 7pm, and players from last season, or new players who would like to come along, all are welcome. I wish both Brian and Dane and all our teams a successful season. On behalf of the Club, thanks for all the hard work go to all those who’ve decided to step down this year, from both the Senior and Youth Committees.

Sheila Nankivell celebrated her 100th. birthday on the 9th. June. Born in ‘The Ark’ in Devizes,Wiltshire in 1910, only nine years after the death of Queen Victoria, Sheila has seen enormous changes throughout her long life. Married to a farmer in 1936 they had one son Michael. Throughout her life she has been a keen sportswoman, playing tennis in her younger years and then turning to golf after the death of her husband and continued well into her 90’s, having latterly been a member of Honiton Golf Club.

Ottery Cricket club is once again regularly welcoming in excess of a hundred youngsters to weekly training sessions and entering no less than seven teams into East Devon youth leagues. Highlight fixture of the year for West Hill Short Mat Bowls Club is their annual “Open Triples” competition, held at the West Hill village hall. Saturday 5th June was the nineteenth year they had hosted this prestigious charity event, when a total of eighteen teams from clubs throughout Devon, plus three teams from across the borders of Somerset and Dorset, competed for the championship title – and so close was the scoring that the complete results could only be determined after the final game of the day. The competition was won by Beer Mariners, skipped by Geoff Stone, Peter Sydenham as number two and Colin Tims as lead. The ‘runners up’ were Staplegrove from Taunton with Tony Blackmore as skip, Barbara Blackmore as number two and Bill Turner as lead. Bowls Club Open Evening - you’ll be bowled over! Your town of Ottery St Mary has a lawn bowling club just 200 yards down Strawberry Lane which has increased its membership by over a third in the last three years. We have 98 members and the committee have decided on a limit of 120 members. We have a bowling green in a beautiful rural setting which is shown in the picture. We have a fine clubhouse with a well stocked bar in which we can seat up to 70 members for social events. In the grounds we have a large parking area with easy access. Our membership includes retired people and also, increasingly, younger people who have often given up the more active sports, such as football, but still want a competitive sport. It’s a very sociable game, and men and women compete on level terms. The cost of bowling is usually only a fraction of golf club membership. The club also organises various social events throughout the year, and our licensed bar is busy on these occasions and on all bowling days. We are fortunate in having five qualified coaches who give their time free to help members improve their game. Our club
is a particularly friendly one, as shown by the return year after year of touring clubs, many of whom write to comment on our hospitality. One of these, Westlecot Bowling Club from Swindon, has visited us each year for seventeen years and has already booked for next year. Our club has a good mix of couples, singles, widows and widowers with little sign of the cliques which could spoil the atmosphere. We like to be competitive but with a light hearted approach and this is
the reason for our success.The Bowling Club “A” team in the Exeter and District Over 60’s Triples League is, at the time of writing, top of its division, so if you want to compete with the best, join us. So, what should you do if this is of interest to you? Well, you are very warmly invited to come and have a look at us at the
club on our Open Evening on Friday evening 16th July from 6.00 p.m. when you will be able to try your hand at bowling, without charge, using our equipment. All we ask is that you bring a pair of flat-soled shoes or trainers. You will not be expected to make any decision about club membership. Refreshments will be available.

Service of prayer for healing A service of prayer for healing with the laying on of hands.We can read this but what does it mean? It can seem to be an uncomfortable concept frightening, even, to some. ‘Its not for me’ can be a normal reaction. So what does it mean? The healing group of St Mary’s Church, Ottery, leads a service of music, readings, prayers and silence. In today’s world anxiety and worry are ever present. Within this gentle service healing can bring peace, comfort, hope and a renewal of strength to face the difficulties of everyday life.
Anyone attending will be part of the service by their very presence. There will be no pressure to take an active part; ease of mind and spirit is paramount. The laying on of hands is simple, offered with love - as is an opportunity to talk privately of any needs which may be causing distress either personally or for another, a relative or friend. So come, be welcomed, happy to have ‘time out’ in a quiet and beautiful setting.The dates for the rest of 2010 are July 11th, September 12th and November 14th at 6.30pm June Woodward

One of my favourite authors is Bill Bryson who has the honour of being the author who has books in more sections of the book shop than any other. He has written books about the English language, lots of travel books, an autobiography and also a wonderful book on science called ‘ A Short History of Nearly Everything’ which is one of my favourite books in the shop.
