Organiser Carol Bennett said: “This festival once again shows the talents and imagination of the flower arrangers that we have locally. And the 1,000 plus visitors that we expect over the five days are in for a real treat. People travel from all over the West Country and further afield to visit this festival, and of course it is incredibly popular with our local community and the tourists that visit the town at this time of year.” “Ottery Parish Church gives the perfect backdrop for flower festivals, and it is wonderful to see this historic and much loved building bursting with colour and fragrance.” Pictures: Front page ‘Bodecia’, above - ‘Little Boy Blue’ from previous Flower Festivals in 2006 and 2008 repectively. A don’t miss date for your diary is Friday the 24th September when St Mary’s Parish Church, Ottery St Mary, will feature another great evening of Jazz. This time our guests will be the Roger Marks Armada Jazz Band, described by Jazz UK magazine as “One of the most popular traditional outfits in the country combining taste, versatility and swing.” The band, led by Plymouth based trombonist Roger Marks, besides being well known all around the west country jazz scene has made numerous appearances on BBC radio and TV and is in constant demand at jazz clubs and festivals all over the country. Roger himself was described in glowing terms by the late Humphrey Lyttelton on Radio two when he said “it’s also my belief, voiced more than once on this programme, that the fluent warm and sonorous trombone playing of westcountry based Roger Marks is of world class quality and should be acclaimed as such”

COUNCIL MATTERS
The August Full Council Meeting received with regret the news of the resignation of William Laitinen as Councillor for the West Hill Ward. East Devon District Council has been informed for the due procedure to be followed before the Council can proceed to advertise to co-opt. There is also the ongoing vacancy for the North Ward (Alfington and surrounding area). Once again may I please encourage you to consider serving your local community by serving as a Councillor? Further details can be obtained from this Office or do take the opportunity to speak to a current Councillor about what it entails at the monthly Councillors’ Surgery. The new Council Committee structure is now in place and during July the Finance and General Purpose Committee met, in August the Amenities Committee has met and on 20th September the Environment Committee will meet. These Committees each have their own terms of reference
and make recommendations which go to the Full Council Meeting on the first Monday of each month for approval. Agendas for these Meetings are displayed in the Council Boards and on the Council website at lease 3 clear days in advance of the Meeting. You are most welcome to attend any of these Meetings. At the August Full Council Meeting, following discussion at several previous meetings, it was resolved to accept the Lease for the Skateboard/BMX Park and to submit it to the Solicitor. It is hoped that matters can now proceed quickly. You may have read that there is concern over funding for the long planned for Playpark at West Hill. The Government has announced that the Playbuilder funding scheme is to be axed and news is awaited on what the future holds. Following so much hard work by many groups it will be a great disappointment if the young people of West Hill lose out on this facility. You have probably seen a large For Sale board on the wall

the press release will tell you how you can do this. By the time you read this the August Councillors’ Surgery will have taken place at the Institute as part of the Community Market giving you the opportunity to raise any matters of concern. If you missed it, the next Surgery will be on Saturday 25th September so put the date in your diary now! Another date is the October Full Council Meeting which will be at Tipton St John Community Hall on Monday 4th October at 7.00pm. This will give those of you in the Tipton St John Ward area a chance to attend the Meeting without travelling into Ottery. The Council actually only owns the building itself and the footpathsized area around its outside. That is why the “No Parkingâ€? signs are on the gates as the land at the front does not belong to the Council! The land for sale has planning permission for the items listed on the sale board. May I remind those Organisations wishing to apply for a Grant from the Council that your application form needs to be in by 31st October. You can download a copy from the Council website or call into the Office to collect one. If your application is successful, the Grant will be awarded at the Annual Parish Meeting in April next year. This procedure allows the Council to budget more accurately for the next financial year. In September please watch out in the local press for information relating to the ÂŁ22,500 held by East Devon District Council which can be spent in the Parish on sport provision. Ottery Gardening Club visit to Wildside
We had a really good trip to Wildside starting with a lovely dinner at the Dartmoor Inn where the Owner and Chef kept apologising for the weather as if it was their fault. Did it rain! It poured just as we arrived at Wildside which was a real shame because the garden was stunning with all different colours of hemerocallis (day lily), crocosmia, acers and many other plants. A lot of us hardy souls braved the weather with oh’s and ah’s at the landscape after which we boarded the coach for Knightstone Tea Rooms. On the whole I think it was a good day. Taunton Flower Show was the next trip and I think the few people that did come thoroughly enjoyed it.We last went there in 2006 but this was much better with plenty to eat, do and see. The favourite plants seem to be agapanthus and heucheras on sale at reasonable prices. The competition tent was packed with vegetables, flowers, crafts, painting and displays. We would like to say ‘well done’ to Paul Kiddle of our club who entered and won quite a few classes and to Sue Marshall and Bridget from the Awliscombe Gardening

Club for entering and winning in the novices classes for the first time. One disappointing thing to mention was that only 30 people came on the trip; I had hoped for more. The next trip is to Burrow Farm Gardens on Tuesday 7th September and is only an afternoon visit but I believe it is well worth going to so please come. We can though I hope look forward to the Autumn Show on Saturday 18th September with plenty of entries in all the classes (including we hope Mr. Kiddle). You do not have to be an expert to enter as Sue and Bridget showed at the Taunton Show. Just come along and have a go to support the club. Schedules can be picked up at Dilly’s Florist. It is an enjoyable day. You can also buy your tickets for Bob Flowerdew at the same time which is on Tuesday 5th October at 7.00pm so we look forward to seeing you. The prices are £6.00 for members and £8.00 for non-members. For groups often or more the cost is £6.00 each. For more information on any of the above and to join the Gardening Club contact Joan Dalton on 01404 815082.

Ottery Flower Club News
Despite the tiny chairs this month (as we had to meet in a classroom) the club welcomed the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) Area Demonstrator Vivienne Thompson to the meeting. She gave us a demonstration on “Sensations of Summer “ which showed the moods of summer from very hot weather to the tastes of summer when she used courgettes and herbs. Vivienne entertained us with various stories including an occasion when she jumped up and down on a plank of wood at a flower show! The next event will be Wednesday 22nd September when Sue Kehoe will be giving a demonstration at Ottery Primary School at 7.30pm. On 22nd September - Sue Kehoe will be giving a demonstration at Ottery Primary School starting at 7.30pm. Visitors welcome.
An opportunity for gardeners An Open Evening of Plant Propagation with Dr Julian Sutton will be held on Friday 24th Spetember at West Hill Village Hall. Doors open 7.00 for a 7.30pm start.

Children delighted with their new playground Tipton St John Church of England Primary School and its governors raised the money for the new playground from a variety of sources with the PTFA contributing £2,000. The children were involved in the project from the very beginning. They discussed what sort of playground equipment they would like and, after much thought, they decided they would like different challenges to the equipment in the playing fields in the centre of the village.

Ottery St Mary - what the future holds If this article was headed “Local Development Framework” I expect many people would quickly pass on to the next page. In fact the East Devon Local Development Framework (LDF) is vitally important, as it sets out proposals for development in Ottery, and the rest of East Devon, for the next couple of decades. Before looking specifically at Ottery, I‘d like to look at the bigger picture across East Devon. The most contentious aspect of the LDF is the plan to build something like 20,000 new homes in East Devon. Of course we need to plan sufficient homes, and especially to try to provide the right number of affordable homes for younger and less well-off local people. However, I believe that what is planned is grossly more than is needed, and combined with relaxed landscape protection policies, and Built-up Area Boundaries to be ‘flexible‘, is likely to result in huge swathes of countryside being covered in concrete and tarmac.Very attractive areas of countryside close to Ottery would be much more vulnerable to development proposals. At the EDDC meeting on 17 August I argued that the LDF
as a whole was damaging, and that the process in producing it had been flawed. Other councillors shared my concerns and were equally critical of the lack of involvement of councillors in the big picture. At the time of writing, the LDF is to go out for three months public consultation commencing 6th September. What about Ottery? First of all a bit of history. Cllr David Cox and I called a public meeting in the Institute in October 2007 so that we could get a flavour of how local people wanted to see Ottery develop in the future. Much more recently EDDC arranged a consultation event held on 30th March 2010 (also in the Institute) which produced many ideas and suggestions. This was followed by a meeting of the LDF Panel at the EDDC offices on 7 July, which gave details of the 30 March consultation. On 7 July I urged a future for Ottery which I believe reflects the aspirations of the majority of Ottery people. I think it is fair to say that this was broadly in line with what other local EDDC councillors present were seeking. My vision for Ottery was for modest housing growth; for the

delivery of planned projects in the short term such as: the pedestrian/cycleway link from the town to the Kings School skate/bmx park development of facilities on land at Strawberry Lane for the delivery of projects in the longer term such as: provision of more recreational and play facilities, particularly to the east of Ottery creation of a cycleway on the disused railway line between Feniton, Ottery, Tipton and Sidmouth provision of a library which is of sufficient size, and is accessible to all, including disabled people provision of better facilities for young people, such as a drop-in centre for older teenagers enhancement of the Ottery conservation area which includes the magnificent parish church (which is surely the jewel in East Devon‘s crown), including the further undergrounding of overhead cables ensuring the provision of a site for a replacement Kings School, and the retention of the Higher Thorne Farm site for community/educational use working towards achievement of aspirations such as; the development of an arts/ heritage/culture centre which could include the Tourist Information Centre development of Ottery as a Samuel Taylor Coleridge centre to commemorate our most famous son, and to promote tourism encouragement of local production of food and other products, and its availability in local shopping outlets
seeking to retain locally owned and locally distinctive shops retention and development of health services at Ottery Hospital and the Coleridge Medical Centre in the local community, rather than in Exeter pressing for the provision of a modern sewage treatment works which removes the continuing smell nuisance for many people in Ottery Many of those ideas have been reflected in the Ottery section of the LDF document (pages 74 – 78; there are also sections relating to other communities in the Ottery Parish such as Alfington, Tipton and West Hill). Although the LDF is generally non-specific in its aims I am particularly disappointed that the creation of a cycleway on the old railway line is not included, in spite of many references in the LDF to support for, and the benefits of, cycling. I am also disappointed that ensuring the provision of a site for a replacement Kings School, and the retention of the Higher Thorne Farm site for community/educational use has not been included; if EDDC is planning Ottery‘s future to 2026 and beyond, surely that has to be a priority? I hope very much that local people and organisations will take the opportunity to look at and express views on the LDF in the imminent consultation, and I sincerely hope that EDDC will listen carefully to those views and make changes to the LDF to reflect what people think. SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR HEALING WITH THE LAYING ON OF HANDS
On Sunday 8th August Ottery St. Mary Bowling Club staged their annual Captain’s Day. The weather was fine and in the afternoon 50 club members enjoyed their bowling on seven rinks. This was followed by a delicious hog roast with all the trimmings, perfectly prepared by Vic Daniels from Whimple, and enjoyed by 64 people. Captain’s Day is a fund raising event for which the club captain chooses the charity to benefit. Club Captain Maggie Beighton chose the Ottery St. Mary & District Help Scheme as funds for this are desperately needed. This is a very local charity which does a wonderful job in our community. The scheme offers help at home for carers and visits people who are elderly, ill or lonely. It arranges transport to hospital, doctor’s appointments or day care centres. Other services are home delivery service for hospital meals, delivery of prescriptions and shopping. There is also a bereavement service. The cash raised on the day was £335.50. The photograph shows Maggie Beighton hand over a cheque for this amount to Pat Lane, who heads the Ottery St. Mary & District Help Scheme.

OTTERY SILVER BAND DIARY The summer seems to be flying by for the Band. We enjoyed another really good playout at the Honiton Show on Thursday August 5th. The weather was good and we played from 1.30pm throughout the afternoon to a very appreciative audience. We cannot believe that our Tuesday evening concerts at Connaught Gardens, Sidmouth are coming to a close. These are definitely a highlight of the year for the Band despite being tested on the odd occasion with lack of players due to illness and holidays, as we were one evening in August. We have to say that the audience were fantastic clapping us on to perform a very good concert despite there only being twelve players! Thank you all for your support and we hope that you have enjoyed our playing over the summer weeks. A thank you must also go out to our volunteer box collectors, much appreciated.
The Band have been looking forward to our joint ‘Summer Concert and Cream Tea’ event with the Rotary Club of Otter Valley. Held at the Tumbling Weir on the 22nd August. We will fill you in on the afternoon events in the next issue! The ‘Brass Class’ recently held a very successful Coffee Evening Concert. The concert was very well attended and the standard of playing by the youngsters was fantastic. Gail and Verity do a grand job leading the Band. A few members of the main band provided help with the refreshments in the kitchen, and I know that they too were impressed by the standard of playing and look forward to seeing some of the youngsters in the main band very soon! Now that September is here the Main Band will be back rehearsing on Tuesday evenings in the band room and, (dare I say it) the Christmas music will soon be making an appearance

Drive to recruit EDDC tenants to new panel East Devon District Council’s tenants will have a brand new opportunity to influence and hold the Council to account for its management and performance in delivering services. By joining the newly-formed Accountability and Scrutiny Panel, tenants will be able to challenge managers; voice their concerns and those of other tenants and their communities; be independent and drive improvement in services through evidenced based challenges on service issues. The Panel will link with other important groups within the existing framework, such as the Mystery Shopping team and Service Review Groups, both of which have a scrutiny function within their remit.
This voluntary role needs tenants who are fairly confident; who can put their views forward in a constructive way; who are able to work with others; who understand services and priorities for tenants; and who are willing to undertake some training to equip them more fully for this challenging and crucial role. There is a lot of work to do to set the Panel up, so at this stage the team wants to hear from tenants who might welcome the opportunity to scrutinise EDDC’s Housing Service. To find out more and/or register your interest in being involved, please telephone Jane Reading on 01395 516551 extension 2236 or by e mail: jmreading@eastdevon.gov.uk

Ben on schedule in charity Trans-Canada solo cycle ride
Nineteen year old Ben Matthews from Ottery St Mary is on schedule for completing his attempt to cycle solo and unsupported across Canada to raise money for the charity Help For Heroes. He started cycling on the 30th May from Vancouver Island on the West coast of Canada and has recently left Ottawa on the final 1400 km leg of his journey towards Halifax, Nova Scotia. Ben has been averaging 150-160 km a day, far better than he had predicted, and is now so far ahead of his original schedule that despite a week off in Ottawa he has had to add another 600km to his route to include Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton so that he arrives on schedule in Halifax at noon on the 23rd August. He has had an amazing journey across Canada meeting some very kind people along the way. He was stranded in Medicine Hat for four days when it was declared a disaster zone because of severe flooding. Ben has seen bears, moose and naked hippy chicks along the way!!
If you want to find out about Ben’s journey visit his blog at: www. benstranscanda.blogspot.com which makes for an amusing read. If you want to help him reach his target for Help For Heroes, a very worthy cause for UK service people wounded in current conflicts, then please visit www.justgiving.com/benstranscanada and donate whatever you can. He would be extremely grateful.
Help For Heroes charity appreciate Ben’s epic trip Ben’s epic journey is a shining example of people throughout this country and abroad who are getting off their backsides and ‘doing something’ in support of Help for Heroes. We continue to be amazed and humbled by so many who are taking up a challenge and whether it be big or little. Every contribution is highly valued because it is ‘every blade of grass that makes the meadow green’. H4H is now committed to the establishment of a number of Personnel Recovery Centres in the UK and is establishing Individual Recovery Programmes for each of our wounded men and women. The Charity is
working closely with other major service charities including The Royal British Legion,ABF The Soldiers Charity and Combat Stress. We are hugely grateful to Ben and his supporters for all they have done. Anyone wanting to organise an event should register it on the website www.helpforheroes.org.uk David Gammell Volunteer County Co-ordinator for Devon & Cornwall for Help for Heroes Ben has raised £4,540 so far and is hoping to reach a target of £10,000 by the time he finishes and all monies are in.

Pixie Day inspires local author’s new book
The Pixiekin – Rainbow’s End is a story set in and around Ottery and was inspired by the legend of Pixie Day by local author Jenny Strong. In this book we learn why the pixies sought revenge on the bellringers of Ottery. and the story is told from their point of view. Penny and her family live on a farm near Ottery. One day she and her dog have a chance encounter with a Pixie named Bobble Badget. We follow the life and adventures of Bobble and discover that he is no ordinary pixie. Through his meeting with the Popple pixies we learn why pixies and humans rarely meet and how the town’s Pixie Day came about. The association between Penny and the Pixie-
kin proves to be beneficial to everyone. This charming book is available from Ottery Tourist Information Centre and The Curious Otter Bookshop, Ottery St Mary priced at £3.99.

Electoral registration form - make sure you tick the box! In the next couple of weeks, you will be receiving the annual Electoral Registration form from EDDC. This form is sent to every household in the country and, by completing the form, you ensure you are registered to vote – for example in the forthcoming referendum on the voting system, as well as the next General Election – should there be one in the next 12 months. But there are other advantages to filling in the form as well. For one thing, by being listed on the Electoral Register you ensure that you have a credit rating – so that you can open a bank account, or buy something through a credit agreement, to name but two. Make sure you tick the box But did you also know that when you complete the form you can tick a box asking for your name NOT to be on the Edited Register? Be careful. If you don’t tick this box, you are ensuring that your name and address will be freely published on the internet and also available for marketing companies to send you even more junk mail! The remedy is quite simple. When you get your form, make certain that there is a P or an O in the column about Edited Register against your name or names (see example below), if you don’t want your name to be sold on. Your local council will be very happy to comply with your choice. Surname Your

Singing brings feel good factor for Ottery Warblers July saw the end of the third year for Ottery Warblers. Growing steadily in numbers and in confidence, this local ladies’ singing group has worked hard to learn more new songs from a wide range of musical styles. We have learnt such material as “Sunrise, Sunset” and “Matchmaker” (“Fiddler on the Roof”), “Braid the Raven Hair” (“The Mikado”), “What a Wonderful World”, “The Impossible Dream”,“Someone to Watch Over Me” and we even attempted the Humming Chorus from Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly”. Many members have remarked how much enjoyment they have had from the singing and how their spirits have been lifted after a weekly session together. We are a very friendly group and always welcome new members. No experience necessary-just a willingness to try and a sense of humour! We shall be starting the new session on Thursday, September 23rd at 2pm in the back hall of the Ottery United Reformed Church. All change at African Drumming sessions In response to popular demand, the Sustainable Ottery African drumming classes have made one or two changes to their afternoon sessions. The first hour and a quarter (2.00 to 3.15pm) will be for beginners and less experienced drummers, with the rest of the afternoon being for those who feel more confident with more complicated rhythms. You will have the choice which part of the session you come to, or of
course, you can come to both. The cost for each session is £7.50, which is payable on the day. Coffee and tea is available at the break. Everyone is welcome to come along and try out the African drums, or djembes, and develop their skills. It is great fun and we welcome people of all ages and abilities although under 14s will need a responsible adult with them (this person will not have to pay if
they do not drum). There is a plentiful supply of drums to borrow, or people can bring their own. One other change is the venue. The autumn sessions will be at the Ottery Youth Centre in Exeter Road, just the far side of St Saviours Bridge. Some car parking space is available. The decision to change the venue has been taken mainly because we feel it will be warmer in the autumn and winter, which is an
issue if you sitting for an hour or more. Three more dates have been planned: Saturdays September 18th, October 23rd and November 20th. The session for inexperienced drummers starts at 2.00pm, with the second session starting at about 3.40 till 5.00pm. Success at Escot in the Heart of Devon
ingredient of their stay. For many, Camp Wild may just have changed for ever the definition of a West Country family holiday. “Of course we’re pretty exhausted” said Victoria SiddleVirok, Camp Wild’s manager who brought the concept to Escot. “We hand picked all the Camp staff and they have been magnificent. Now we’ve all earned a really good rest!”
Launched this year with great hope and just a little trepidation, Escot’s Camp Wild has been a roaring success. Sited within the 1100 acres of the beautiful Escot estate near Ottery St Mary, this summercamp-with-a-difference has enthralled children from across the world. From Honiton and Ottery, Barcelona and Taiwan, Newcastle and London, hundreds of children have unlocked the secrets of the Jurassic coast, discovered the thrills of Escot’s woodland playground, met all the animals, sung around camp fires, and slept snug in the protected environment of the camp’s yurt village. “Was it good or was it fantastic?” asked one parent. “Oh, fantastic, fantastic!” came the response. For locals, it’s been the perfect summer childcare solution. For visiting families to Devon whose children have enjoyed Camp Wild as part of their holiday, it’s been an exciting and crucially weather-proof
But not for long. Halloween Camp in October half term is already booking and that will be followed in 2011 by Easter Camp, Spring Camp at May half term, and then Summer Camp 2011. In between, Camp Wild’s uniquely versatile mix of accommodation and facilities is available to schools and group organisers. East Devon Cats Protection YOUR LOCAL BRANCH CARING FOR CATS The East Devon Branch of Cats Protection covers a very wide area of East Devon, totalling about 400 square miles. We rescue and re-home cats who are strays, or who are unwanted or injured. Many people assume that we are paid for the work we do. This is not so. Everyone in our Branch who is involved in the rescuing and re - homing of cats and kittens does so voluntarily. This includes fostering, trapping ferals, collecting strays and abandoned cats, re uniting found cats with their owners, fund raising, and promotional work, such as this editorial. We do not have set hours; as the cliché goes we are 24/7.We work from home and all our telephone calls are responded to and acted upon as soon as possible. For example, one of our fosterers received a call from someone who had been feeding a stray cat in Exmouth. We had been supplying her with food and had had the cat neutered but we were unable to take the cat in as all our foster homes were full. But the lady was For Gazette Advertising Call 01404 815111
becoming inpatient and insisted that the cat be collected. Our fosterer was on her way to assist at our fund raising event in Ottery St Mary at the time, so she collected the cat on her way. The cat (named Boris) spent most of the afternoon in her arms, completely happy and ‘chilled’ but as soon as he was put in a basket he panicked .We have since discovered that Boris is blind, which explained why he only felt secure in someone’s arms. We did not have a pen available for this cat, so the fosterer took him home with her. What would have happened to him if we hadn’t taken him in? He was straying in a busy part of Exmouth and was in danger of being run over. If you can help us raise funds to help cats like Boris please cal Sheila on 01404 812576. If you would like to help us in any other way call Alyn on 01404 812920. If you have lost or found a cat please call 01297 21610 For all other enquiries phone 01404 811089 or visit our web site. Come and join us at our next local fund raising event at The Institute, Ottery, on October 23rd 10.00am - 12 noon.

Readers Write Thank you for your words of comfort I would like to thank the people of Ottery for the overwhelming number of cards and messages, expressing sympathy and offering words of comfort. When we found out last year, that our future together was limited, my husband made the decision that we should just keep smiling and carry on. I intend to continue to comply with his wishes. The last five years at Roberts have been some of our happiest. Thanks again for your support. Rosalind Browne, Roberts
Factory a blot on the landscape Dear Sir, I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments expressed by the letter in the last issue from ‘Disgusted Ottery person of 75 years’. The factory site is an eyesore and a blot on the landscape. Surely this brownfield site should be the planning department’s overiding prioirity before they even consider giving planning permission on a green field site. Lesley Hayes. £10,000 grant for Volunteer Support Agency EDDC has agreed to give financial support to the East Devon Volunteer Support Agency. On Wednesday, members agreed to a reduced grant of £10,000 to support the agency, which has two main functions: * The Core activity is the hosting of projects (carers’ support, mental health and wellbeing, patient and public involvement, volunteer support, homework club); * EDVSA is also an Infrastructure Organisation that provides independent support, advice and guidance to groups in East Devon; it’s also an employer of 24 staff who offer free, impartial support with no political agenda. Councillor Mrs Christine Drew is EDDC’s representive on the agency’s board. She said: “I will be able to monitor the work they do and give periodic reports to Members of EDDC. We will also be bringing all groups that receive funding from EDDC to Scrutiny Committees in future. “Although East Devon District Council has had to make drastic savings due to the economic downturn, to cut funding completely for this support group would have been detrimental to its work. “Without core funding, EDVSA would find it difficult to not only support the voluntary and community sector in East Devon but also to host projects for the benefit of the community in the future”.

D.I.Y. TIP OF THE MONTH
BY CHRIS ABBOTT
REMOVING WALLPAPER Hello and welcome to September’s Tip of the Month. Something we get asked quite a bit in Abbotts is ‘What is the best method for removing wallpaper’. So guess what, that is just what we are covering this month. First off you will need a wallpaper scraping tool which is a sharp flat bladed tool, which will help you strip the wallpaper. The traditional approach is to use hot water and a sponge to break down the wallpaper’s adhesive. Modern wallpaper glue is now stronger than it was, say 20 years or so ago, because, surprisingly, we like our wallpaper to stay on the wall and not end up on
the floor. However, when you come to remove the glue you could be removing wallpaper for the rest of the week if you used this method. The next option is to use Wallpaper Stripping Solution, which is around £1.60 a bottle and looks like Lucozade. You add this to the hot water, and again apply by sponge. This breaks down the glue even more and makes life a bit easier. The best option is to use a stripper…no Dave, not that type of stripper, this is a steam stripper. Steam strippers are like big kettles to a point. You add water to the tank, wait until it boils and then steam will start spitting
New Heritage Society book on 14th century Ottery The Ottery Heritage Society has recently published the first in its planned Historic Records series. Called “People and Places in 14th Century Ottery St Mary”, the booklet includes a transcription of the 1327 tax list for Ottery, never before published, and with additional materials from other sources, offers over 200 names of Ottregians of that time, together with information about where they lived. There is an introduction to the lists to help with getting the most out of them. This will be invaluable to family and local historians or anyone interested in the history of the town and parish. Copies are available at £3 from The Hon Secretary, Chris Saunders at the Society’s regular monthly meetings at the
out of the plate unit. You place the plate against the wall and move it along the wallpaper scraping the wallpaper off behind the plate as you go. But take care as not to stay on any point too long as you can damage the plaster if it is ‘over cooked’. Steam strippers are the most effective way to remove wallpaper and good ‘DIY’ units can be picked up for around £20 to £30. But what is even more effective is to hire our Industrial Wallpaper Stripper, which costs £10 per day. The advantage of this is that you have a lot bigger tank (so you have to refill and wait less for it to boil). It has a bigger plate (gets the job done quicker) and it kicks out more steam. So if you wish, you can keep the windows and doors of the room you are working on shut, and the room will quickly fill up with steam. Not great working conditions I know but you will find as you go along the wallpaper will start peeling off a lot quicker, and come the end you probably won’t need to use the steamer at all, plus you have
a cheap style Sauna thrown into the bargain! All prices and a pretty picture of our Hire Industrial Wallpaper Stripper, are on the hire pages of the Abbotts website www.abbottsdiy.com Another thing to note is if your wallpaper has been painted you will need to ‘scour’ the surface so the hot water, or steam can get in behind the paint and remove the wallpaper. The most effective way to do this is to use a ‘hedgehog’. Now before I get people chasing around the countryside looking for spiky little creatures, and using them to remove paint, this is not what I mean. A hedgehog, or Wallpaper Perforator as it is also known, is a spiky roller which makes small holes in the paint which the steam can then get behind and remove the wallpaper. Again these can be hired for £3.50 a day or £2.00 a day when hired with the Industrial Wallpaper Stripper. Finally, whatever method you use, don’t forget to clean down the walls once all the old wallpaper is removed with sugar soap, to get rid any remaining glue on the walls.
Is there a DIY problem, that you would like to see answered in this column? If so or if you have any other comments relating to this column visit the Tip of the Month page on the all new Abbotts website www.abbottsdiy.com

LION’S CORNER Those of you who went to the Duck Race held at the Otter Inn,Weston, on the 8th August will know that we enjoyed magnificent weather and a bumper crowd of supporters. There were several side stalls from ‘water pistol shooting’ to a lucky dip, with entertainment from local majorettes. The ducks were released at just after 2.00pm and there was much excitement watching our members in the water helping those ducks along which were caught up in the bank. The winner was duck number 1700 which was fished out by Lynn, (pictured above) one of our Lions Ladies. The ‘also ran’
ducks can be seen in the background of the photo. The Honiton and District Lions Club are sponsoring an ‘Under 14s’ side from Ottery St Mary Football Club. These boys will play in a National League organised by the Multiple District. Games will start at a local level within this District, and the winner will then play the winners of other Districts. Our quiz team didn’t do very well against Seaton, but our skittles team played a blinder against them. The Air Day at Smeatharpe took place on 21st at August, after the deadline for publication, so I will report on that event later.

FROM THE CHURCHES FROM THE CHURCHES IN OTTERY
As the summer comes to an end and our young people have received their examination results we wish them well in whatever they are now able to do next. Some of the Scouts will have been to Ilsfeld and the churches have prayed for their safe travel and wished them to have a trip that will enlarge their horizons and give them more understanding of other kinds of tradition. Quite a number of people have been or are going to the Passion Play in Oberammergau and we would be very pleased to receive any photographs and to have small accounts of how you found the experience.
THE METHODIST CHURCH There has been much effort on the part of the Methodists of late, encouraging (with words and finance) one of their members who is planning to join a group cycling from London to Paris. Meg Privett has decided to spend 1st - 5th September making this cycling trek in aid of the Classic FM’s charity Music Makers. When asked why she had chosen this charity Meg replied “Although I’m not a very accomplished musician myself, music has been a major influence on my life. I realise now as an adult, what a privileged childhood I had, growing up in Totnes during the 50’s when the influence of Dartington Hall was at its height. I could not imagine life without music and it grieves me that children are growing up in our country today without the opportunity to learn about it or how to enjoy it. I wanted to do something positive for them, but at the same time stretch myself. This has provided me with the opportunity to do both these things before I get too old.” Church members have rallied round and put money into the kitty for Meg, enabling her to raise the necessary funding for this venture (there being a minimum amount of sponsorship required to be eligible), and they wish her well as she sets out on this short adventure. We were sorry to hear of the death of Major Shirley Halse, with whom we had worked closely in previous years Meanwhile, Methodist Services continue to be held at 10.30am on Sundays, and coffee mornings from 10am on Tuesdays.
Page 20
UNITED REFORMED CHURCH The summer series of Coffee mornings on the church lawn has ended. Holiday makers and local people have used the opportunity to see the church interior and learn something of its history. Some Ottregians admitted they had never set foot inside the church before. Penny Hounslow ran a Fair Trade stall and Pastor Graham Tarn spoke to many passers-by. Each Saturday a small group also prayed together for God’s guidance in the life of the fellowship. Two of the youngest URC members were busy in Sidmouth Folk Week running an outreach café. Supported by Christians from East Devon and beyond, they enjoyed valuable conversations and renewed friendships established in previous years. Jo Merrygold who grew up in the Ottery URC fellowship and attended the King’s School now works in Newcastle with the URC Northern Synod as Mission and Development Enabler. She was previously chaplain in Carrs Lane Birmingham. After long months of tedious planning the new emergency lighting and smoke detection systems have been installed making the premises safer for all who visit.
NEW LIFE CHURCH
The church continues to meet at the Kings School main hall at 10.30 am on Sundays where we enjoy worship, biblical teaching and Sunday School groups for the children. We are always pleased to welcome visitors and are happy to pray with anyone who needs healing or who has any concerns. In August many of the church attended the New Wine Christian conference at Shepton Mallet. As always there was excellent teaching, worship and fantastic children’s and youth work, truly an inspirational week for all Christian denominations. This September the church will be celebrating its 5th birthday! A family fun day is planned with plenty of fun and games including bouncy castles, inflatable slides and bungee run (we hope). We are looking forward to a great afternoon. ‘Groundbreakers’, our kids club for children aged between 7 – 10 years will recommence at the start of the Autumn term, as will our mid-week home groups. The Youth Group, for 11 – 18 year olds, continues to meet every Friday night at 7pm. If you want to know more about New Life or any of our activities contact Bruce and Heather Talbot at info@newlifeottery.org.uk or check out our website www.newlifeottery.org.uk.
THE PARISH CHURCH
Benn Scott’s concert was very well attended and received. The standard of the young performers was most inspiring and encouraging. The drums were a very interesting addition to the scope of talent but we are fortunate here in Ottery to have such budding young musicians. The Barbecue to thank everyone involved with the May Fair was another good occasion and also gave us the opportunity to welcome some new people. Mike Moore reminded us that next year the May Fair, at Cadhay again, thanks to the generosity of Rupert Thistlethwaite, will be on Saturday May 28th. so put it in your diary as soon as you can. Offers to help with the stalls or to think of a new attraction are always welcome as are offers to help with the setting up and taking down. You will have seen if you visit the church or come to worship with us that the Dorset Aisle is now clear, the scaffolding is still in place over the Apostles’ window and that things are a little dusty! We have heard that we can go ahead with the scheme for the new heating system which means that both sets of work can be done at almost the same time.Visitors are always most welcome, all we ask is that you use a little imagination and think of how lovely it will be when the work is done. The pews that were for sale have been oversubscribed and we know the lucky purchasers will give them good homes. Our next exciting event for the community is the Flower Festival: ‘Showtime’: Thursday September 16th to Monday September 20th. Refreshments will be served in the Loft during
this period. Having seen a list of the Shows that will be interpreted by the arrangers we know you can be sure of an interesting and entertaining experience so do come along to enjoy it all. Another event for the community will be on Friday, September 24th with another great evening of Jazz. This time our guests will be the Roger Marks Armada Jazz Band, described by Jazz UK magazine as: “One of the most popular traditional outfits in the country combining taste, versatility and swing.” The band, led by Plymouth based trombonist Roger Marks, besides being well known all around the West Country jazz scene has made numerous appearances on BBC radio and TV and is in constant demand at jazz clubs and festivals all over the country. Tickets, at £10 in advance (£12 at the door) will shortly be available from the Church Office (01404 812062) Ottery Tourist Information (01404 813964) or Tony Rhodes (01404 811299) There will be a bar for drinks and all profits will be equally shared between the Parish Church and the ‘Help for Heroes’ charity. Jane Ollier’s Licensing is at St Matthew’s Church, Exeter, on Monday September 6th. A coach will be going from the parish so if you want to book a seat contact the Church Office on 01404 812062 Our patronal Festival is celebrated on Sunday September 5th but there will be prayer all day in the Lady Chapel on Saturday September 4th in preparation for Sunday. Do come to join us. During Saturday there are no fixed times, come to pray when and for as long as you like.

ST ANTHONY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH
It was lovely to host in July the monthly meeting which takes place between other churches in the town, where our focus was on how we might best pray constructively and imaginatively for our community. We were very ably led in this by the Catholic Women’s League who gave us some pointers and generally held the evening together – so a big thank you to them for their input. We were privileged to have a flying visit from Father Joseph and hear how things are going in Sierra Leone. Our parish regularly supports this mission and two of our parishioners have already been out to visit earlier in the year. There is a lot to pray for; how often have we all said the “Lord’s Prayer” without really thinking about the words, but in Sierra Leone, the words “give us our daily bread” mean just that, as poverty is prevalent and people often do not know where their next meal is coming from – or how they are going to feed their children. Often there is so much need that it is hard to prioritise just where help should go and difficult decisions have to be made. However, in the midst of all this poverty, there are encouraging signs of hope – in Fr Joseph’s district there are over 40 Catholic schools!! – for many, this is the only education provided as state provision is patchy to say the least. Often teachers are not paid properly as only a small proportion of the necessary finance is provided by the government. How fortunate we are in this country to have free state-provided education. In places like Sierra Leone, education is seen as the only real way of climbing out of poverty. Our next event not just as a Catholic Community in the town but also nationally is, of course, the visit of the Pope in September. We are praying that this will be a wonderful opportunity for us to share our Catholic faith.
SALVATION ARMY
After all the excitement of last month and the trip up the tower of the Parish church Steve Watson has sent in a report this time that is as he says, ‘short and sweet’. Sunday 19th September at 3pm - Harvest Celebrations with Majors John and Lorna Smith. Major John Smith spent a few months on Ottery in the 1970’s as part of his training to be a Salvation Army Officer. Sunday 26th September at 3pm - Back to Church Sunday. Cafe style worship. The last week of July was very busy for our Group; we were helping the New Ottregians front of house with their performance of Jane Eyre the musical. This was a lovely show, true to the classic story by Charlotte Bronte. We were fortunate to have the composer Ruth Nunn with her friends at most of the performances. See the photos and review - pages 26 and 27. I was really pleased with the programme, it looked so professional. As I have previously mentioned, Dave Glennie worked so hard on the presentation and Pete Privitt on the cover design and also the posters. The girls in the hospice did all the printing for us. I would like to say a big thank you to all the businesses that supported Hospiscare with their advertising. The new idea of the competition based on the advertisements was quite popular; the winner drawn at the last performance was Gerri Turner from Whimple. I think the hardest question was the deliberate mistake, the
answer Bagpuss which was incorrectly printed as Bagpus. The other answers were: RTEBWNIIMULG – (anagram) – Tumbling Weir The Bishop – Grandisson Does it stand still here? - Ottery Time Piece Ash? The costumes and sets were perfect. The amount of work involved in the production is colossal. We are looking forward to 31st August when the cheque in the

Ilsfeld weather almost made Ottery Twinners blood boil! Last month 30 twinners from Ottery returned from a very successful visit to our twin town of Ilsfeld in Southern Germany. When we have been to Germany in previous years the weather has been on the cool side so by choosing to go in July we thought there was a good chance of it being fine. Little did we know that it would turn out to be the hottest month in the decade with daytime temperatures reaching an unprecedented 36 degrees in the shade. While this curtailed some of the outside activities the weekend was filled with a programme of activities from the civic reception for our arrival on the Thursday evening up to our departure on Monday afternoon. Friday morning was taken up by a historical tour of part of the town and the church where many of us were able to go to the top of the tower and gain a birds eye view of the town. Unfortunately for the keen photographers the major road works in the town centre may have spoiled some of their best pictures. In the cool of the evening we joined our hosts for a meal with local food and wine. Our host families planned Saturday morning while in the afternoon we had been invited to a nearby village to bake bread in its still existing communal bread oven. Fortunately in the hottest part of the day the local heritage group had already set up the oven so our task was just to prepare the dough for cooking, sit back and enjoy the products of our activities. Being one of the prominent German wine growing areas we were treated to a pleasurable wine tasting at a local vineyard.
On Sunday afternoon everybody gathered at the Amelienhof winery where the owners provided samples of eight different wines, white, rose and red, for us to try. In England we are familiar with the German white wine but its red wine is almost unknown. The names of the grape varieties may be unfamiliar but the quality of the wine matches that of the best French and New World wines. While the weekend was far too short there was relief among some at boarding the air conditioned coach to join the flight back to cooler England after yet another successful and enjoyable twinning exchange. Even now the Ottery St Mary Twinning Association is already formulating plans for the return visit by our German friends at the beginning of September next year which will be the tenth anniversary of the start of twinning with Ilsfeld. If you are interested in our twinning activities why not contact our Chairman, Mark Rix, telephone 01404 813123 or call in at the Ottery St Mary Tourist Information Office.

Ben Scott & Friends Concert Coleridge Playgroup News
Once again Ottery St Mary Parish Church played host to the most amazing local musical talent. The audience were captivated for the evening by talented musicians and vocalists ranging in age from 7 years old to 70 years old. There were many artists who have made a big impression but for me the over whelming feeling was the coming together of so many from our community. It was really great seeing young people playing pieces with the not so young people and all enjoying themselves. The Church organ is a very powerful instrument when played by any organist however when played by 10 year old Miles Corkhill it left everybody
speechless. Despite the large number of people involved with the evening none of it would have happened without the huge personality that is Ben Scott and no wonder he has so many friends. He inspires those around him to get involved and share their talents to raise money for good causes, this concert raised money for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Ben himself has the most amazing talent for music which he has shared with us here in Ottery but he will be travelling next year to share his talents inter-nationally. Thank you Ben and Friends for a wonderful evening. Fiona Rimmer

As the pre-school is currently on our summer break, I thought that this time I would concentrate on telling interested parties about the care that we offer. We return on Monday 6th September for business as usual. Sessions run on term time week days from 9.15am - 11.45am. In addition to this, on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays we also offer a lunch club from 11.45am to 12.45pm and an afternoon session from 12.45pm until 3.15pm. Parents are free to pick and choose the session hours that best suit their needs with up to 15 hours a week being available free of charge to those who qualify under government funding. For hours in excess of this and for those who are not yet funded, add-itional sessions can be taken for a reasonable charge. Should parents require care outside of pre-school hours, this can also be accommodated by using ‘Happy Days’, the Ofsted registered out of school club that operates independently from our premises.
We are also very pleased to announce that from Monday 13th September we shall be running a Walking Bus from the Primary School at 9am daily. The Walking Bus will return children to the Primary School for a 3.30pm pick up. This is a pilot scheme that we hope will become permanent should there be a demand for it. This free service will enable parents to leave their children with fully checked suitable staff members and can be assured that they will be walked to the pre-school safely. In addition it also offers parents an extra 30 minutes of care completely free of charge. If you think that you might be interested in visiting the preschool or booking your child into some of the sessions that we offer, please give us a call on 01404 812663 and ask to speak to Sharon Cake or Sue Scott. We would be very happy to see you. All new families qualify for a free taster session (as long as parents stay). Sue Scott - Manager
A CAT’S EYE VIEW The lawn carpeted a quietness; Sufficient breeze abroad To sustain the nodding daisies Posted o’er the sward. White clover heads lured random bees To work across the green, Noising happily it would seem, Intent to please their queen. A primula leaf’s landing bay Harboured a speckled wood, As close by a dummock busied away Neath the awning shrubs. And a cat stretched out along the wall Twixt frequent blinks looked down on all. An improvement in the plight of bees Ottery beekeeper Daniel Basterfield explains the current plight of bees In recent years there has been a lot of press coverage of the plight of the bees - how they are dying in great numbers and the effect this could have on our food supplies. To some degree the story has grown legs due to the media’s appetite for a disaster. You might be forgiven for thinking that not a lot had changed since the problems first surfaced, however the reality is quite different. The cool, wet, summers of late have resulted in a number of problems for bees. They are cold-blooded, so cannot forage for food in poor weather. The secretion of energy-rich nectar by plants, a key food source, is driven by sunshine and high temperatures. Bees mate ‘on the wing’ in a very time-critical fashion, which is seriously affected by prolonged periods of poor weather such as a wet July. In short, they have had trouble getting out to feed, finding food, and reproducing during summer. This year, however, they have been thriving. Our gardens and hedgerows have been full of bees. Beekeepers locally have had a good crop of honey - not a bumper year, but a welcome return to normality after the scarcity of honey in recent summers. With luck the bees will have at least another month of good weather whilst they make their winter preparations, increasing their chances of survival through the coldest months and into next year. Us humans haven’t been standing still, either.Within the past month, almost £10m of
funding has been announced for nine UK scientific projects to investigate aspects of the bees’ decline. Between them they aim to increase our understanding of bees and pollinating insects, their habitat and nutritional requirements, the threats posed by diseases, and the impacts of pesticides and changing land usage patterns. Indeed some honey bee research is taking place right on our doorstep, at Exeter University. DEFRA has embarked on a ten year ‘Healthy Bees Project’, aiming to improve the practical advice and training available to beekeepers, and has greatly increased the number of Bee Health Inspectors it employs to provide advice to beekeepers in their own apiaries. Organisations such as the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and the British Beekeepers’ Association have seen a huge rise in membership as the general public try to find out how they can help. The local Exeter and East Devon beekeeping associations have welcomed a number of keen new members, and a county-wide project will help Devon beekeepers breed and share queens from their
healthiest colonies so that the standard of the Devon honey bee ‘flock’ can be steadily improved. There are many ways to help, and now is the time to plan for next year. Bee-friendly plants and nesting boxes can be found in local garden centres, and there will be a number of beginners’ beekeeping courses held locally over the winter. If the thought of having a hive of bees working away in your garden or allotment patch has ever appealed, why not come along and learn more? One word of warning, though: the fascination with bees tends to last a lifetime, and beekeepers live to a ripe old age. For further information about beekeeping workshops in Ottery St Mary contact Daniel on 01404 815885

New Ottregians’ Jane Eyre raises £5000 for Hospiscare The New Ottregians’ production of Jane Eyre, which took place between 27th and 31st July at the King’s School, Ottery St Mary has helped the Otter Vale Friends of Hospiscare raise over £5000 for the charity, and has received letters of congratulation from the composer and the writer of the musical for the quality of their production. Ruth Nunn and Jeremy Gibson waived their fees to benefit the charity, and attended nearly every performance. Husband and wife team Rick and Karen Rugg played the lead roles of the eponymous heroine and the mysterious charismatic man who wins her heart. They brought their characters to life with tremendous acting and superb singing , which was supported by a highly talented cast of children and adults, most of whom have been with the Company for many, if not all of their productions over the past 15 years. Worthy of particular note for her portrayal of a very convincing French girl under the guardianship of Edward Rochester, the central character, Maya Elston sang and acted in French with clear diction and a melodic rendition of a complicated score.
The very atmospheric set was designed and built by Helena Williams, assisted by Lynne Denne, Peter Wood and John Farmer. Lifelike sound effects throughout the show were provided by Peter Privett which together with lighting of an equally high standard by John Newton gave the whole production a thoroughly professional gloss. A very complicated score was impressively controlled and remodelled by Margery Whittington, Gwen Martin and Barry Wass, three musicians who gave their time unstintingly.Any

theatre music company is totally reliant on the quality of their musical accompaniment, and the New Ottregians are extremely fortunate in the quality of their musicians. The climax of this show must surely have been the dramatic plunge to her death of the shadowy madwoman hidden but heard throughout the story. Helena Williams, the producer, donned the rags of Bertha Rochester to throw herself off the balcony every night, causing many in the audience to enquire about her health (and her sanity!) and busy sorting through likely scripts for next year’s production. Whatever it turns out to be, it will have to be of exceptional quality to compare with Jane Eyre-The Musical. Producer Helena Williams said “It is always a pleasure to raise funds for Hospiscare. Their volunteers always work so hard with us to make our productions such a success. New Ottregians Update
Well done everyone involved in ‘Jane Eyre - The Musical’; the cast, front of house, back stage and side stage. You raised over £5000 for Hospiscare although all the bills are not in yet. One special mention to John, our professional Lymelight man who has not increased his fee for several years. In these days of credit crunch and inflation he has to be unique. We will perform a concert version of ‘Pirates of Penzance’ this Autumn. This will include
those favourites such as ‘I am a modern Major General’ and ‘a Policeman’s lot is not a ‘appy one’. Venues will be in Talaton and hopefully Ottery, plus any other halls, churches, and pubs with room who are prepared to invite us. Have scores, will travel! Please contact Tony or Helena at Bagpuss on 01404 814272 to discuss possibilities. More details next month so watch this space. Ron N

Get the balance right!
Supporting the British Heart Foundation
Welcome to the wonderful month of September and back to our salsazie classes. They resume again on Monday the 6th of September in the Victory Hall Whimple, from 7.30pm until 8.30pm. Our Ottery St Mary class is now running every TUESDAY Night in the Old Boy’s School Yonder Street from 8.00pm until 9.00pm, and finally our Talaton class in Talaton Village Hall will resume on a Wednesday morning from 10.00am until 11.00am. Let me explain to you what salsasize is and why it is important to exercise. Salsasize is a form of exercise through the use of salsa dance step using the sounds of salsa/regatton music. The reason we need to exercise is to try and maintain a decent level of fitness, therefore enhancing lifestyle. Exercise can help lower blood pressure,
maintain a balanced weight, bring up energy levels, relieve stress and tension and generally give people a good sense of well being. As we are a fund raising group helping to support the British Heart Foundation, it is very important to keep in mind what the Ottery Healthy Living motto says ”getting the balance right”. Using a different routine every week, we build up stamina whilst toning the body and having fun. As our ladies have told us, they love the variation in the classes, not learning the same routines, always stretching their minds as well as there bodies with the changes each week. And as each week is different, it does not matter if you miss a class because there is no catching up to do. You can just fit straight back in again. Also because you are not tied into block payments, our flexibility of pay as you go fits in to our ever increasing hectic lifestyles giving you the freedom of choice. It is also important to remember that if you want to maintain your weight you must take in the same amount of energy (calories) as you burn off. If you want to lose weight you must use up more energy (calories) than you take in. If you take in more energy (calories)

than your body needs you will gain weight. An extra 100 calories each day over a period of one year will give you an added body weight of 10 pounds (100 calories is equivalent to 1 and a half biscuits or 1 small kit kat) scary isn’t it. So we also have from the British Heart Foundation the use of their literature which has all kinds of helpful tips, advice recipes etc. Our classes have a very mixed range of people and ages with
different levels of ability. All we ask is that you are reasonably healthy and have a decent level of fitness (you can always ask your doctor for advice). If you would like to come along and give any or all of our classes a try, please just come along meet new people, have fun exercising, learn new healthy living tips and take away a new recipe idea. Opticians Brian Knapman and Eiohn Hayes have joined forces to create Knapman Hayes, opticians specialising in home visits. Brian, who has been in optics in Torquay since 1961, disposed of his practice in 1988 and subsequently started a domiciliary service for patients who are housebound and unable to visit a high street optician. Knapman Hayes expanded into Ottery St Mary some time ago and even though the firm is based in Torquay,
Eiohn lives in Chudleigh so visits to the town are well within reach. There is no charge for the eye examination or visit if the patient is over 60 or registered as housebound, and spectacles are free if the patient receives income support or pension credit guarantee credit. Brian said: “The main problem we find is that people are unaware that this service is available, and seem very surprised when they discover they can have
their eyes tested at home, free.” “We are not in competition with high street opticians as we only do home visits. In fact, several local opticians already use our services for their own patients.” Eiohn explained: “We offer a complete service. If spectacles are needed, we supply them from a large selection of modern frames, both metal and plastic, and some designer frames. We deliver and fit all our spectacles so there is no need for the patient to have to leave the house. And if we are unable to visit ourselves, our colleague Kathy will come to visit you for any alterations or adjustments.”
Knapman-Hayes are based at 9a Ilsham Road, Wellswood, Torquay, telephone 01803 294418, and they would welcome any enquiries from people living in Ottery St Mary and environs. Please contact them soon for further information or for an appointment.

Help for disabled people to explore Devon countryside A new Countryside Mobility scheme which aims to make access to the countryside in South West England easier for disabled people has just been launched. Based on the principle of town centre Shopmobility schemes, Tramper all-terrain mobility buggies are now available to hire for use on paths and trails at five countryside sites and visitor attractions across the South West. The scheme, run by Exeter-based charity Living Options Devon (LOD), officially opened for business this week at the sites across Devon, Cornwall and Dorset. James Maben, Countryside Mobility Project Manager from Living Options Devon said: “We are working with a range of organisations who have wanted to make the sites they manage fully accessible to disabled people for a long time. By providing Trampers for use on the paths and trails at the sites, people with mobility problems can explore like anyone else.” The current sites involved in the scheme include Haldon Forest Park (Exeter), Stover Country Park (Newton Abbot), Durlston Country Park (Swanage), Berry Head National
Nature Reserve (Brixham) and Siblyback Lake (Liskeard). “We are currently in talks with many other countryside sites across the region and hope to have Trampers available at many different locations over the next few years,” added James. “Later this month, our first wheelchair accessible ‘Wheelyboat’ will be available to hire at Tamar Lakes near Bude and we are looking for locations for more boats and Trampers.” The scheme is being supported with a grant from Natural England as part of its Access to Nature programme, funded from the Big Lottery Fund’s Changing Spaces programme.

Jo Lewis, Natural England Access to Nature Advisor said: “Creating greater access to nature for everyone is very
important to Natural England. Without projects such as this many people would miss out on the opportunity to become active in their local environment and benefit from the health, social and educational benefits this type of project provides.” The Trampers can be hired for a small hourly charge, must be booked in advance and are only available to hire through a membership scheme to ensure people receive proper training in how to use them safely. The musical focus is sound and silence. Each week the children will listen to a piece of recorded music and have the opportunity to handle percussion instruments whilst playing along to a familiar tune. The older children, 3 and 4 year olds, will be retelling the story of the Magician’s Apprentice, with lots of opportunities for singing, development of rhythm and movement. They will play percussion instruments to accompany songs. Music with Mummy classes for 0-3 year olds take place at West Hill Village Hall on Tuesday mornings and in Ottery on Friday mornings. News from Ottery Tourist Information Centre
September already! We have enjoyed a lovely summer this year that has brought us many visitors to Ottery from all over the world. They have delighted in visiting our wonderful Parish Church with all that it has to offer. They have appreciated the friendleness of everyone they have met within the town, particularly in our local shops. The Age and History of our older buildings, especially the Parish Church and the surrounding buildings is of particular significance to our friends from the New World together with the fame of Samuel Taylor Coleridge that makes us a most important venue when visiting Britain. For many of our European friends another literary genius of more recent standing is Rosemunde Pilcher whose books and subsequent films have attracted people from Germany, Austria, and elsewhere. And let’s not forget the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling. Our town is named as ‘Ottery St Catchpole’, the home village of the Weasley family, that have also contributed to the attractions that we have to offer. This year, with the long sunny evenings that many have enjoyed during June and early July, walking along the river Otter to Tipton St John has given both visitors and locals a great deal of pleasure. Other walks such as those along East Hill provided views over the Otter Valley and to Dartmoor and beyond. We are ticket agents for National Express Coaches, Sovereign Coaches tours, also Hotel Bookings at Heathrow and Gatwick Airport. Tickets now available for Jazz at The Parish Church on Friday 24th September buy in advance £10 on the door £12 Diamondogz are back at The Institute on Saturday 9th October tickets £10 raising funds for the Ottery Carnival. Don’t forget to visit The Flower Festival at The Parish Church 16th September to 20th September. Open from 10.00am to 6.30pm. Friday 17th at 7.30pm, also at the Parish Church, an organ recital with Michael Farley at 7.30pm. Do call in and see us at The Tourist Information Centre - we’re here to help you.

And Finally Can we ask that people do not bring dogs onto the football club grounds. We have signs prominently displayed at numerous locations around the grounds but the message seems to be getting missed for some reason. We have kids and adults playing football most days of the week. If they are not playing competitive games then they are training. It is not pleasant for either kids or adults to find dog poo on the pitches, or anywhere else on the grounds. We have had to clear up from both the main pitch and the training pitches recently. If you need to walk your dog then there’s a grassy area
just outside the entrance to the Club and I believe there’s also a bin there for dog litter bags to go in. It would be much appreciated if you could take advantage of those. Anyone who is interested in getting involved behind the scenes, get in touch by ringing the Club or by asking to talk to a committee member if you are down at the Club itself. We are always looking to welcome new social or committee members to the Club and there is always more than enough work to keep us all happy!! If you are interested then ring us on 813539 or just come down and ask Colin behind the bar to grab a committee member for you to talk to. Bill Hayes

Rotary Round-Up NEWS FROM THE ROTARY CLUB OF OTTER VALLEY
July was an interesting month for the Rotary Club of Otter Valley in that there were no real meetings at the club – in short it was an ”awayday” month. In addition, there was no business meeting; the club’s concentration was on Sail4Heroes which took place from 8th to the 22nd July. The first meeting was a fun golf evening at the Otter Valley Golf Centre arranged by Rotarian Barry Parfitt. Club members were formed into teams consisting of golfers of differing standards and non-golfers who all played against each other. Not surprisingly this lead to a great deal of hilarity, much fellowship and the loss of a significant numbers of balls. The competition over, the management of the centre had laid on an excellent BBQ, members bringing their own drink; everyone sat around enjoying the delightful evening and telling tales!! The 8th of the month was an early start for most members of the club and their wives. We were all on the road by 0800 to Sutton Harbour Marina for the start of Sail4Heroes.Armed with collecting buckets and
wearing brilliant yellow t-shirts emblazoned with the words Sail4Heroes, we, along with members of Plymouth Crownhill Royal British Legion, set about persuading the public to invest in our very worthwhile project which was to raise funds for injured servicemen. Photographers abounded and at 1200 on the dot Rear Admiral Ric Cheadle, the President of the Royal British Legion in Devon, supported by his county manager and fundraiser, sent the yacht “STENFIS” and its intrepid crew off on their journey to HMS President at Tower Bridge in London. The support bus and its fundraising team followed in hot pursuit to rattle their buckets all along the coast along with the yacht. This was to be the pattern for the next 14 days. As day 2 of Sail4Heroes was to end at the Marina in Exmouth, our new President, Ken Chun, had decided to hold the club meeting for the following week a few days early at the Exmouth Sailing Club. He had invited members of Exmouth Rotary Club who were to help with

collecting on the next day and Exmouth Round Table who had kindly covered the cost of the shirts, to join us. It was a beautiful evening but very hot in the clubhouse; however this failed to detract in any way from the enjoyment of the evening. For our next meeting, we were to have returned to our old annual walk along the River Otter from Tipton St John to Ottery. With the major involvement of the club in Sail4Heroes, numbers were down. However, the weather intervened, and it became an ad hoc meeting presided over by President Elect, Paul Shingler. Two days after this, many of the club members and their wives, headed off to London and HMS President, for the presentation of a Promissory Note for the sum of money raised by Sail4Heroes.As usual, the “best laid plans” etc, our Guest of Honour, Simon Weston who was so dreadfully injured in the Falklands War, found his train involved in an incident of someone trying to jump off a bridge in front of it. Rotarian Sir John Evans, our MC, swiftly rearranged the programme to take account of this unavoidable delay. With all of us standing on the deck of HMS President in brilliant sunshine,Tower Bridge towering above us, Rotarian Chris Highnam, whose idea this
had been and who had done most of the sail-ing, handed over a Promissory Note for £15000 to Simon Weston, (see photo above) adding a rider that all monies were still not in and that we hoped to finally achieve £20,000. Cheques were then presented to the patron of the South East London branch of the Royal British Legion and the Surrey coordinators of the Help4Heroes for £7,500 – the actual beneficiaries. What a conclusion to a really wonderful team effort for a superb cause – special thanks must go to our injured heroes, Commando Gunner Mark Stonelake and Riflemen Smith and Bridgewater who had sailed with us for a significant part of the journey. We drew the month to a conclusion, with our annual Boules tournament with Dawlish Warren Rotary Club. On this occasion, they were the hosts with us playing at Bishopsteignton. It was very good to see our friends from Dawlish Warren again and a very good Boules competition ensued. Unlike previous years, on this occasion we won 11 – 5; no doubt they will be out for blood next year! As this event has become such a permanent fixture in both our calendars, we have decided to obtain a trophy to give both clubs something to compete for.

GRANDISSON ARCHERS NEWS
Members of the Grandisson Archers with their families gathered for a picnic on a sunny Sunday afternoon in early August. Members rounded off the afternoon by shooting a variety of traditional archery disciplines. The recently trained archers were there in force and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, eventually hoping to be brave enough to shoot in the local monthly Escot Quarry shoot at field targets set in the most difficult of places. We continue to shoot weekly at The Kings School venue on Sundays from 2.00 - 4.00pm and the second Saturday morning in each month at Escot. However, we are no longer holding a Monday evening shoot. Our more senior members are already in training for some forthcoming outside competitions in other Counties, not to mention our own meat shoot at Escot and the Agincourt and Presidents Trophy competitions. For more details please contact the chairman, Paul Lowe on 07739 034347 or see the website www.grandissonarchers.co.uk

Ottery Petanque Club Charity Shield 2010 Ottery Table This annual event is in memory of past members of Ottery St Mary Pétanque Club who have been assisted by Hospiscare during various illnesses. Over the past 10 years the club has raised over £3500. The competition was unavoidably held in August rather than May and, of course, many people were on holiday. On Sunday 15th August 10 teams of pairs from Ottery St Mary, ISCA and Tiverton clubs entered this event to raise money for Hospiscare. All 10 teams played each other over a long day’s play. The eventual winners were Joan Dixie and Keith Brealey from ISCA Pétanque Club beating Rose and John Thatcher from Ottery St Mary Pétanque Club by 2 points difference in the day’s total scores. The real winner on the day was Hospiscare with £208 raised from 20 players Our thanks go to ISCA for continuing to allow Ottery St Mary to make use of their facilities while they are without a club base and all players who turned up and made the day a great success. The game of Pétanque, better known as Boules is becoming very popular all over the country. In Devon there are clubs in Exeter,Westward Ho!,Tiver-

Please return Ottery library book Could the person who found my library book “The Wealth of Nations’ by Adam Smith please return it to Ottery Library. It has no value other than the cost to me of some £25 in fines and for the library to buy a replacement. By not returning the book you are obviously preventing other people the opportunity of reading it. Please don’t be selfish. Just put the book through the library letterbox and that will be an end to it!
