What does Engineering offer? An engineer is someone who takes scientific knowledge, initiative and inventiveness and applies these attributes to real-world problems. Engineers give shape to our world and make a difference to society and many aspects of people’s lives. In practice this means that engineers are the productmakers of our time. Being in high demand world-wide, they are highly mobile and highly respected.

Engineering at Flinders Flinders University’s Engineering awards have been designed in close collaboration with industry in order to meet future development needs.

Practical experience

> Electronics Engineering

> Mechanical and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (new for 2011)

Whether the focus is on biomedical, electronics or mechanically based high technology, you will gain specialist knowledge in key areas and an integrated tool kit of skills that will enable you to meet the technical criteria required by industry and to engage professionally with ongoing technical developments.

This industry placement is available in: > Engineering (Biomedical) > Engineering (Computer Systems) > Engineering (Electronics) > Engineering (Environmental Technologies) > Engineering (Mechanical) > Engineering (Robotics) > Engineering (Software) > Engineering Science More than 100 local, national and international organisations support the program, which provides students with 20 weeks of structured industrial work experience either in Australia or overseas.

As a result of this practical experience students complete their final year of study having already gained a firsthand understanding of the role of the graduate engineer. Our students graduate with proven on-the-job experience and many go on to work full-time with the company that provided their placement, or with another in the same industry.

Professional recognition These courses have been developed to meet the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia. Accreditation of any new engineering course occurs in the first year it is offered. Such accreditation is provisional until the course produces its first graduates.

Recognition with Engineers Australia means that this award is recognised interstate and in various countries around the world, and that the studies undertaken have been thoroughly reviewed for quality and depth.

SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS BONUS POINTS Science and mathematics bonus points will be allocated to students studying selected science and mathematics subjects in Year 12 who apply for entry to a science and engineering program at Flinders. Biomedical engineering involves using electronics, computer systems and mechanical devices to improve health care and health services to enhance the quality of human life. It covers a range of fields including medical devices, medical imaging, physiological signal processing, biomechanics and biomaterials. Biomedical engineering results in products such as diagnostic devices, biocompatible prostheses, medical devices, and imaging equipment such as MRIs and EEGs. It also assists in the development of tools for the training of medical professionals. Biomedical engineering is a relatively new, but rapidly expanding area of engineering. New devices, algorithms and systems will be developed that will improve clinical practice and health care and will impact positively on human lives, such as in the designing of devices that are more ‘human-friendly’. There is an increasing interest in how the sporting professions can make use of biomedical engineering. The Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) has been developed to meet the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia.

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AT FLINDERS The Flinders program equips you with the skills to investigate, plan, design, manufacture and maintain systems and equipment that are used in all aspects of health care. You will gain a solid education in both engineering and medical science. Throughout the course, there is a strong emphasis on practical skills and teamwork. The Biomedical Engineering program enables you to choose a course of study with either an electronics or biomechanics focus. Flinders also offers a five-year Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical)/ Master of Engineering (Biomedical) program. Electronics is the enabling technology for today’s society. It is embedded in most facets of life ranging from consumer goods to the sophisticated instrumentation used in electronic circuits, electronic devices, telecommunications and computer systems. Electronics engineering is founded in a field previously known as electrical engineering. There is already a substantial shortage of electronic engineers in South Australia. The Technology Industry Association estimates that the electronics-based industries will continue to grow rapidly but also identifies the shortage of skilled personnel as the most significant factor that could limit the growth and development of SA’s electronics industry. The Bachelor of Engineering (Electronics) has been developed to meet the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia.

Developing environmental technologies involves using electronics, remote sensing and computer science to improve the environmental impact of humans on our world. The degree differs from conventional environmental engineering awards in that we focus on the technologies and systems that make up a good environmental solution as opposed to the more civil engineering aspects of environmentally-friendly structures. The course is noticeably different from other awards in Australia. Although many universities offer environmental engineering awards allied strongly to civil engineering, this award covers the electronics, remote sensing and computer systems required to build environmental monitoring devices. The Bachelor of Engineering (Environmental Technologies) has been developed to meet the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia. ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES ENGINEERING AT FLINDERS Students gain the skills and knowledge to plan, design and build the environmental devices that will be critical in monitoring and modelling the environment.

Maritime electronics is the application of electronics in the maritime industry, be that naval, commercial or recreational. Electronic engineers working on ships, submarines, offshore platforms and other maritime locations have to have a strong understanding of the differences in deploying devices in these environments. In addition, although used on land, there is a greater focus on some forms of device at sea such as battery, sonar, surveillance and navigation technologies and electronics capable of being used in harsh or extreme conditions. With the long-term growth in ship building, the acquisition of new future submarines, and increases to defence capabilities in South Australia, it is expected that there

will be a great demand for electronic engineers and, more specifically, specialist maritime electronics engineers for many decades to come. Three years of this award will be undertaken at Flinders University. Students will also spend one year at the Australian Maritime College (part of the University of Tasmania) in Launceston. This award is conferred by Flinders University. The Bachelor of Engineering (Maritime Electronics) has been developed to meet the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia. MARITIME ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING AT FLINDERS Students gain the skills and knowledge to plan, design and build the electronic circuitry that is integral to the extensive range of high technology applications used on ships including batteries, sonar, surveillance and navigation technologies. The course is designed to address a substantial opportunity in South Australia and is strongly supported by industry.

STUDY PROGRAM The First Year contains study in fundamental science and engineering topics including digital and analogue electronics, computer programming, professional skills for engineers, mathematics and physics. The Bachelor of Engineering Science is a pathway to a Bachelor of Engineering award and equips graduates with the knowledge to become engineering technologists. It is a highly flexible award enabling you to choose a course of study with a focus in either biomedical, electronics, mechanical or software engineering. As such, it enables students performing well in this award to transfer to the four-year Bachelor of Engineering awards. It has no formal prerequisites, and thus is the ideal course for students who may need further preparatory study before entering a Bachelor of Engineering. The Bachelor of Engineering Science has been developed to meet the requirements for accreditation by Engineers Australia. STUDY PROGRAM The First Year contains study in fundamental science and engineering topics including digital electronics, computer programming and mathematics. The Second Year then builds on this base with topics dealing with a variety of areas that depend on the sequence option you choose. The Final Year provides further studies and the scope to take selected electives in computer science and engineering.

14

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES Graduates can obtain roles in sectors such as telecommunications, robotics, automotive, mining and defence. Potential occupations include: engineering technologist, production technician, engineering officer, technical sales executive and project officer.

Small class sizes, and the fact that a small number of lecturers taught the majority of the course subjects allowed for a more one-on-one environment. Lecturers have the time to help you with subject-related problems and get to know you by name. The facilities and laboratories were excellent, with enough modern lab equipment to provide for all students. Comment from Flinders graduate obtained from the Australian Graduate Survey 2009.
