FLINDERS UNIVERSITY
New students are keen to come to Flinders; past and present students are glad they made the choice. We believe this reflects our high academic standards and our determination to ensure our courses meet your expectations while giving you flexibility and choice
At Flinders we aim to inspire our students to achieve at the highest possible level. We provide an innovative and supportive learning environment to enable our students to gain experience in different ways of thinking and working. Our goal is to produce graduates who are knowledgeable and who can apply their knowledge; who can communicate effectively and connect across boundaries; who can work independently as well as collaboratively and who value ethical behaviour.
A Flinders qualification opens many doors. It gives you an opportunity to learn about things that interest you, prepares you for the career of your choice and gives you the skills you need throughout your working life. Higher starting salaries and better career prospects are other benefits of a university education. Whatever your background, we’re confident you’ll find Flinders an inspiring and vibrant place in which to learn, study and shape your future. We look forward to welcoming you to campus.
What’s it like to study at Flinders?
For most students, studying at Flinders will involve a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials, perhaps laboratory or practical classes, fieldwork or work placements, as well as time for individual study.
Tutorials/Seminars
Tutorials are new to most people entering university. In tutorials, students and academic staff meet in small numbers in a somewhat informal setting so that topics raised in lectures can be discussed further and points can be clarified.
Lectures
Group work
Work integrated learning
Studying on your own
Most of our courses will include a series of lectures, each lasting about 50 minutes. These usually occur in a lecture theatre with the whole student group taught together. They can be given by various members of teaching staff, who are experts in the subjects being taught.
Practical work is an important opportunity for some students to test the concepts and methods introduced in lectures and tutorials. You will usually work in a small team or in partnership with another student. Many courses offer work placements which give students experience in an industry, government or community setting.
You may also be involved in group work in which you collaborate with other students on a project activity or in preparing for a presentation. This encourages you to take different roles and responsibilities, to share expertise and tackle tasks that you would not be able to undertake alone.
Your independent reading, research and study, guided by lecturers and tutors, will enable you to prepare for topics in greater depth. This is especially important when you are undertaking an assignment, an essay, a seminar/tutorial/presentation or preparing for an exam.
Flinders is everything a modern university should be – progressive and dynamic yet friendly and accessible. We offer a vibrant and stimulating environment in which to work or study and we have a long held reputation as the “student’s university”.
