“FORESTRY TIMBER'S GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE SHAPES THE FUTURE OF FLOORING” As one of the world’s largest producers of engineered hardwood flooring we are frequently asked about global trends in flooring. Our work in international markets which span Australia, New Zealand, Europe, United States, Canada, Latin America, South Africa, and the Middle East, gives us a unique worldwide perspective of a highly diverse customer base. It enables us to not only see what is globally and regionally in demand in terms of design, colour, pattern and wood species, but to also anticipate future trends.

Every regional market has a different “personality” influenced by a range of factors Anna-Marie Pampellonne, including climate. For example, European General Manager, Forestry Timber designers opt for a more conservative approach to colour choice to ensure the end result offers the perfect visual solution in both summer and winter, whereas markets with less seasonal variations optimise the opportunity to be more adventurous with their colour choices. Diverse colour ranges, combinations of contrasting shades, and pattern variations are key to supplying international markets. The forthcoming launch at Domotex 2020 of 60 new colours being added to our already extensive colour range reflects the worldwide desire for design solutions that are individual as each customer. Globally, we are seeing high demand for our Fashion collection with its chevron and herringbone patterns. In particular, designers are enjoying the modern twist our colour range and shade contrasts bring to these classic, elegant patterns. The vintage, retro look also remains extremely popular worldwide with an increasing appetite for old fitting patterns, and distressed floors. Aligned with this is a growing demand for wider floorboards which interior designers are appreciating for their versatility in creating both a sleek minimalist look and feel, and the grander, more traditional look. The focus on sustainability has seen worldwide interest for exotic wood species decline, and there is high demand for our responsibly sourced ash, Western European oak, Tasmanian oak, and pecan products. We are experiencing an ever-increasing interest from the rapidly growing climate-conscious customer base for products, such as ours, that use timber more efficiently and with less impact on the environment than traditional timber floors. However, regardless of whatever pattern or product is popular and on-trend today, having a global perspective is crucial in enabling us to keep ahead of demand and innovate our product range. Designers are constantly looking for new designs and different approaches to flooring to offer their customers. Our mission is to support them in leading the market and creating value for their customers, by being at the forefront of the future of flooring.

“TANTUM QUERCUS … and nihil amplius” ( lat.) means “Only oak… and nothing more”. It is the group of companies from Russia specialized in production of solid-wood oak floors and furniture panels. Besides, in the year 2020 the group launches a new project for oak lamellas manufacturing. The production facilities of the alliance are placed in the cities of Tambov and Cheboksary and combine the full-range of production activities, including logging, wood-sawing, drying, manufacturing, finishing and sales. The integration of different industrial segments permits

to keep a considerable (3000m3) reserves of lumber. Hereby the non-reducible stock of both dried and non-dried sawn workpieces in quantity 1000 m3 each allow to produce about 10.000 m2 of solid-wood flooring in more than 70 different designs and 150 m3 of glued furniture panels per month. All this combined with modern European machinery, advanced management and skilled stuff gives the alliance the incomparable privilege to guarantee and ensure the European customers prompt and non-delayed deliveries of oak products for the large-scale construction projects.

∂ Inside news HARO

Award-winning holiday home in New Zealand This stunning residence, designed by New Zealand architect Gary Todd, seems to have grown organically out of the surrounding rocky landscape. Constructed from an outstanding design and using the finest of materials, it’s no surprise that the flooring for this striking building was supplied by HARO. The “Trends International Design Award” (TIDA) is the highest accolade that architects in Australia and New Zealand can receive. TIDA winners are announced every year in a range of categories. In 2018, the New Home of the Year Award went to architect Gary Todd for his spectacular “Cascata” holiday home. The principles of biophilic design were crucial to the architect's work. Biophilia calls for designs with a connection to nature We all have an innate longing for the purity and security of the natural world. Designing buildings according to biophilic principles means creating visual and physical connections with nature by incorporating fresh air, large areas of glass, water features and materials that mimic natural shapes and forms. Applying these principles leads to the construction of unique architectural objects that seamlessly

integrate into their natural surroundings or take on the shape, colour and fabric of the existing landscape. Gary Todd’s award-winning building creates an intimate relationship between the occupants and the natural world around them. The extensive use of glass walls (glass makes up 65% of the house) enables residents to live in pristine surroundings yet still feel completely secure. The four floor levels of the house are terraced in such a way that the building seems to emerge from within the rock itself. A waterfall and a pond in the rockery garden serve to intensify this impression. Connecting with nature begins with HARO floors One of the tenets of biophilic interior design is that wooden floors with a natural oil finish bring the flair of nature into a building, and the “Cascata” architect has exploited it to great effect. He deliberately chose Plank 1-Strip Plaza Oak Tobacco Grey Sauvage with a deep brushed surface texture and naturaLin plus finish. 400 square meters of these extra-wide boards were installed in all four storeys of the house, with the colour-refined finish perfectly mirroring the shades of nature. Rocks, stones and water appear to merge together with the parquet flooring through the glass walls of the house. Hamberger Flooring, based in Stephanskirchen, has been manufacturing HARO parquet floors to the highest quality standards for the past 150 years. Our contribution to the award-winning “Cascata” house is something of which we are particularly proud. Quality parquet flooring from Bavaria for a design winner in New Zealand. THE MOMENTOUS FLOORING EVENT IS COMING HANNOVER UNDER THE SPELL OF DOMOTEX FROM 10 TO 13 JANUARY 2020

Floor Forum International booth 2019

Whether expectations are high or low, you can be sure after all those years that Domotex can count on a devoted clientele in terms of both visitors and exhibitors. It often seems that everyone just assumes they have to be there at this ‘momentous event’. The reason for that is quite clear; this is where all innovations from the industry are on show. There are always small fluctuations, but exhibitors can always count on a good number of professional visitors and the ‘meeting element’ plays a prominent part. Whatever the case, the organisers deserve praise for their creativity.

A review of 2019 The title of our review earlier this year was ‘Fewer visitors yield comparable trade figures.’ That says a lot, doesn’t it? Once again, the show confirmed its leading role within the carpet and flooring market. 1,400 exhibitors from 60 different countries came to Hanover to kick off the new year with success. Over 90% of the visitors were decision makers; this was also confirmed by the exhibitors. ‘The visitor quality was extremely high,’ they said. The fact that about 70% of visitors came from abroad once again underlines the international character of Domotex as a meeting platform. The organisers noticed greater interest from

8

Floor Forum International 106

architects and designers. ‘Thanks to its strong international character, Domotex can be called the ultimate global market place,’ concluded Dr Andreas Gruchow after the show; he is responsible for the organisation of Domotex Hanover. Sonia Wedell-Castellano, the new global director of Domotex, noticed that new partnerships were forged which would probably have been unthinkable in the past. A mirror of reality? Yes, and more so than ever before! Just take the slight fall in visitor numbers which the organisers attributed directly to an ongoing market concentration. The result? Fewer decision-makers with more power to make decisions. Indeed, the post-show survey revealed that sales made by the exhibitors remained stable.

The theme for 2020: ATMYSPHERE When participants enter Hall 8, they will be immersed immediately in the atmosphere which is designed to create the main theme. That is done by means of a giant horizon which is developed in textile and onto which natural scenes such as trees and water are projected, combined with architectural images in an atmospheric light show. This image will immediately set the tone for Framing Trends, which itself goes on an imaginary walk past installations inspired by the main theme, namely ATMYSPHERE. The latter is, in turn, a multicoloured exploration

of special topics such as health and welfare, naturalness, sustainaAn overview of some exhibitors bility, and recycling. In the centre of the hall there will be a stage for Alsapan the ‘Talks’ programme and a forum area for creative dialogues and discussions. This is where architects, interior designers, and people Nature-Parquet, an ALSAPAN parquet collection of influence within the industry will discuss new products, news, and key themes related to the main theme. This will also be the departure point for guided tours of discovery throughout the show given by top class architects. During those tours, visitors will discover the individual by displays, the frames on which the show is built. These comprise four zones: Art & Interaction, ‘NU’ (now) Thinkers, Flooring Spaces, and the Furniture, Flooring, Worktops new Contract Frames.

Art & Interaction zone In this zone artists will present surprising and sometimes quirky interpretations of the main theme , namely ATMYSPHERE. Those artists will include Serena Garcia Dalla Venezia from Chile, who transforms textile fibres into a bountiful and colourful landscape with styled flowers and plants. Modica from Munich will present glass-mosaic fragments, which are mixed together to form haptic and alluring ornaments inspired by nature.

‘Nu’ THinkers zone In this zone students and start-up businesses will present projects related to the main theme. One of them will be Alexander Marinus. He uses divergent techniques to make imaginary shapes and designs from ecological jute fibres. Students from Hanover University of Applied Sciences and Arts have created a modular flooring system which has individual cooling or heating zones for both private and public use. The Weissensee School of Arts has created refined textile combinations which are reminiscent of organic structures.

Glorious is hugely popular partly due to that Mix ’n Match effect. You can combine two or three widths of the same design in one room or opt for one width. Anything is possible! Yet the effect of the three different widths is top class and looks highly luxurious. Another innovative features is that the wood grain on the long planks does not repeat itself; each plank has one unique design with no repetition, something generally not the case with other laminate floors. This gives a much more Photo BerryAlloc authentic wooden floor look. It is easy to fit with the 5G Lock system, four bevelled edges, and all the assets of a superb laminate floor! There are three wood designs available in various shades: JAZZ XXL, GYANT XL, and CRACKED XL. For the Floor Forum International stand we have opted for the Gyant XL Light Natural. The surface of these planks is of an unrivalled matt perfection, and the wood structures are completely synchronous with the design and absorb the light as it were. This effect is unique in the world of laminate!

optimised with regard to maximum application safety. Thus Pall-X 96 is not only the most successful 1-component woodfloor lacquer in Europe, but also a reliable and easy-to-use product for all applications. In addition, the German manufacturer, based in Würzburg is presenting a technically sophisticated and visually impressive new colour concept for the creative realisation of unique woodfloor surfaces. At the Pallmann stand, real woodfloor professionals and those who want to become woodfloor professionals can get their own impression of the original, two-colour surfaces and their possible applications and register for a training course on the new colour concept. Pallmann stand, Hall 13, C32.

Parky has completely redesigned its brand and the way of producing wooden floors. We are, therefore, proud to present our new brand identity and product range at Domotex Hannover. Make sure you stop by because Parky wipes the floor with traditional parquet, laminate and vinyl flooring. How? Well, with the new Titanium finish we apply 8 strong but invisible layers of varnish. This turns Parky into a real Hercules against scratches and makes it ready for intensive use. Indeed, Parky claims its place in the 33 class. Parky also innovates by making the surface of each board, including bevels, water-resistant. Thanks to the Aqua Sealing Complete system, moisture and bacteria will have no chance. And that's not all. By combining a super matt top varnish with a deeper brush technique, our wooden floors come even more alive. And as always, Parky remains a sustainable choice. So there are many reasons to admire the new Parky at booth C04 in Hall 12!

Producers of ecological adhesive

CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVES ARE ALSO ‘GREEN’ ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS EXPRESSED IN CRYSTAL CLEAR RULES

Photo – Bostik

Strictly speaking, you can say that the impact of adhesives on public health and the environment depends on the ingredients used and the mechanism which creates the adhesive bonding. One of the best ways to reduce the impact of chemical products on the environment is to reduce emission values i.e. the extent to which these products emit Volatile Organic Compounds before and during production and before and after application.

Activists continue to push Young ladies such as Greta Thunberg from Sweden and Anuna De Wever from Belgium continually strive to attract global attention. Ms De Wever calls it constantly hammering on the same nail. What do they hope to achieve? They don’t actually propose any solutions. They suggest that science has to solve the problem and that politicians should provide the resources for that purpose. In this way they hope to lead the world towards a sphere of constant ‘ecological conduct’.

Ecological conduct We conduct ourselves ecologically by burdening the environment less with ‘harmful’ and slow or non-degradable substances which often defile the planet for an eternity, by treating our natural energy sources

30

Floor Forum International 106

sparingly, and by showing a preference for energy sources which do not pollute. We also show respect for the environment by expressing a preference for renewable raw materials in the production of goods i.e. raw materials which we do not exhaust simply by harvesting them. Using recyclable raw materials also deserves support because those raw materials can be used again in new (different or the same) applications once they have done their job or become worn out.

Ecology versus economy It is clear that the environment is a top priority. It is equally clear that there’s also a cost. The nature of some actions reveals that the activists themselves are not scientists. If we replaced all air flights of a few hours with trips on sailing boats classed as ‘business tourism’, we would certainly prevent the consumption of kerosene and the emission of burnt kerosene. However, we would soon discover that lots of precious working hours would be lost at sea. That’s a huge cost price! As we’ve said, the merit of the activists lies not in their ‘solutions’, but in the fact that they ‘keep people awake’.

Fighting against VOCs VOC is the collective name for many substances which are present in all materials in our surrounds and which evaporate easily. Those

substances are not new, as they have always been there. It is generally known that some of those substances (e.g. formaldehyde) can have harmful effects on human health. Those VOCs can be emitted by some varnishes, adhesives, or finish products.

Limiting emissions The Construction Products Regulation has ensured the reduction of permitted levels of emissions (EMICODES) time and again. For some time now, the ‘new’ European emission norms have been in force, which, amongst other things, stipulate that after 28 days the emission level of all total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) together must not exceed 1,000µg/m³ and the total content of semi-volatile organic compounds (TSVOC) must not even exceed 100µg/m³. The amount of CMR substances from categories 1A and 1B must not exceed 1µg/ m³. CMR substances are carcinogenic (they cause cancer), mutagenic (they cause changes in genetic properties), or toxic for reproduction (they are harmful to reproduction or the offspring).

Applied to adhesives Adhesive plays a major part in various sectors in the construction industry. Indeed, adhesive is used in several applications in daily life. And so, here, too, the key is to limit emissions. Amongst other things, MS polymers and silane adhesives score quite well here. Last year, Kaneka took readings of the total volatile organic compounds and the semi-volatile organic compounds. For TVOC, after 28 days, they recorded emissions of 6 microgrammes/m³ (the permitted limit in Belgium and Germany is 1,000 microgrammes) and, for SVOC, they recorded

emissions of 5 microgrammes/m³ (the permitted limit in Belgium and Germany is 100 microgrammes). Moreover, MS polymers do not contain any isocyanates, so, for instance, they do not cause skin problems for users. This means that they don’t leave any marks on hands, but also that it is easy to remove any adhesive residue from the parquet. The latter is obviously a major asset for glueing pre-finished floors.

What's on the market? Blanchon

Natural latex adhesives and casein adhesives are regarded as ecological because they consist of natural resources. And so, obviously, they may not contain any chemical additives. It is also worth mentioning that some adhesives conform to environmentally-friendly labels, but there is as yet no such thing as an ‘ecological label’. As regards ‘formulas’, paints, varnishes, and adhesives must communicate a ‘safety information card’, which you could call the identity card of the product. That card is mandatory for solvents, products, and compounds. Blanchon also regards the packaging as extremely important in two

ways: the types of raw materials from which the packaging is produced and the Interaction with the packed contents. At all events, the entire life cycle of the product (from ‘harvesting’ to recycling) must be considered. Blanchon presents the ‘Colle Fortes d’Ebénisterie’, which is based solely on animal raw materials. Yet Blanchon does point out that its hybrid polymers, which contain no solvents or isocyanates, also respect human health and the environment without necessarily being defined as ‘ecological’.

Bostik Since the new Royal Decree regarding maximum emission values for all floor coverings and floor covering glues came into force in Belgium, all glues are ‘ecological’ to some degree to the extent that the emission values measured after 28 days must be below strict maximum limits for an extensive list of volatile organic compounds (VOC's). The number one ecological glue in the Bostik range is PARFIX ECO PLUS, an innovative and elastic parquet glue with excellent cross-linking and rapid setting. The glue contains no softeners, no reactive accelerators, and no phthalates. Green Contact (contact glue for flexible floors), which contains no solvents or phthalates, is a contact glue for skirting boards in PVC, raised skirting boards, profiles, stair nosing, pre-formed staircase steps, and floor coverings (PVC, cork, and rubber in lanes or tiles) on stairs and such like. Bostik Rolls (dry glues in a roll) is a special reinforced adhesive tape for specific applications, namely the renovation of floors, skirting boards, pre-formed staircase steps, shower systems in PVC, and such like. These tapes are an ecological alternative to traditional glues, they are lighter in weight, and produce less waste. Bostik Rolls contain no solvents or phthalates, they comply with the very low VOC emissions of classes A+ and EC1, and can be used for LEED and BREEAM projects.

Chimiver Chimiver offers UNISIL: a prepolymer based, single-component hydrocuring adhesive with a silanic termination (MS technology). Recommended for gluing pre-finished wooden floor onto marble, grit, tiles, ceramic or marble-chip floor, etc. Also suitable for gluing wooden floor onto underfloor heating and cooling system. according to the parameters of the GEV dated 03 March 2009, because it meets the certification LEED protocol (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).

Rubio Monocoat Today, the ecological aspect of a product is explicitly emphasized. This is also the case with ecological adhesives. An adhesive can be ecological because it is not harmful to the user or visitor, and because the parquet adhesive is consciously developed with sustainable materials. When developing Rubio® EasyBond parquet adhesive, sustainability was taken into account more broadly than just the product itself. After hardening, adhesive residues can simply be pulled from the bucket, making the bucket reusable or perfectly recyclable. Rubio® EasyBond parquet adhesive does not contain any softening agents that can migrate, but has a high content of polymer, which makes the adhesive more expensive, but also more durable with a higher adhesion capacity. This means you don't have to worry about early aging or damage to the surface finish afterwards. In addition, Rubio® EasyBond parquet adhesive is a hard-elastic adhesive that gives the wood just enough room for movement so that the wood does not start to deform or cup. Plasticizers have been under pressure for 20 years because of the alleged negative effects on the environment and public health. Rubio® EasyBond parquet adhesive is solvent-free and therefore not harmful to the environment and meets all recognized norms and tests. The Rubio Monocoat primers are also ecological, which is not always the case with the competition. There is no point in developing an ecological adhesive if you cannot offer an ecological system.

Tover Free from isocyanate, solvents and risk symbols on the packaging, and having achieved the A + and DiBt certifications, Tover MS Polymers Tovcol MS and Tovcol MS Start are manufactured with the most advanced technology in terms of user’s health protection and respect for the environment. Besides Tover has added outstanding technical performance to high efficiency, total absence of waste and a strong and elastic adhesion. But the real difference with similar adhesives on the market is the manufacturing process: Tover uses its own renewable energy produced by solar panels that completely cover the roof of its plant. A further confirmation of the Company's spirit of innovation.

THE COST OF SMOOTHING REPAYS ITSELF IT RAISES TENSILE STRENGTH, REDUCES STRESS, AND IMPROVES POROSITY

Photo – Pallmann

A smooth and completely flat subfloor is vital to a flexible floor. It ensures that there are no minor blemishes which would show up on the top surface of the floor. It is also immediately clear that there are different types of levelling agents. For wooden floors we use levelling agents which are clearly stronger and often also rougher. However, levelling agents under LVT or flexible floors are generally very fine with only standard strength. By contrast, levelling agents for wooden floors are very strong.

Raising tensile strength Levelling has several benefits for both new construction and renovation. It not only solves those problems for which we actually apply a levelling agent, but it also helps to improve the quality of the screed. The key issue is the tensile strength of the screed. If we glue parquet (or a subfloor) directly onto a screed, we obviously want solid adhesion. The tensile strength of a screed enables it to absorb wood movements (swelling and shrinking) so that there is no weakening of the adhesion. However, levelling also spreads out the stress more evenly. Since glueing is much easier on a smooth substrate, floor fitters see a drastic reduction in adhesive consumption.

Uniform porosity The porosity of a substrate (covering floor) needs to be the same all over to obtain good glueing adhesion. Depending on the old floor and how it was fitted, we can establish that with renovation the porosity of a screed is seldom uniform. If we remove the old floor, we often have to remove glue residue as well, and it is clear at once that this takes more effort in some places than in others. Since the glue residue has not penetrated the screed uniformly, some places are more porous than others. It is perfectly possible to eradicate differences in porosity with a primer. The primers on the market are easy to spread and they level the absorbent capacity of the screed all over so that, later on, the glue or, firstly, the levelling agent forms a strong adhesion everywhere.

Be quick is the message The products are highly fluid, so they strive automatically to spread out evenly, but the rapid setting means it is advisable to assist the spreading by using a spatula or wiper. It is therefore best never to make too much levelling agent, and certainly no more than you can spread in 15 to 20 minutes. The time needed for glueing onto the levelling agent varies between 2 and 30 hours. That’s also the time usually needed to apply a second layer of levelling agent if you have

to eradicate a greater difference in level. Most levelling agents have a filling capacity of 1-10mm per layer. If you apply more than one layer, it will be necessary with some brands to spread quartz sand between layers. The surface can be walked on again after the fitting within one to three hours, depending on various factors.

What’s on the market? Bostik The main reason for levelling a subfloor is to obtain a sufficiently flat substrate. Furthermore, the screed has to meet at least the following criteria: permanently dry (with no danger of rising damp), clean, free of cracks, and sufficient compressive strength and tensile strength. The choice of the type of leveller depends mainly on the substrate and the pressure on the floor afterwards rather than the type of floor covering. The application also plays a part: fibre-reinforced for levelling wooden substrates, fast-drying if the job has to be finished the same day, and increased compressive strength if used as a top coat. Whether or not you can glue depends on the type of leveller and the type of floor covering. As standard it is possible to glue onto a levelling agent in thicknesses of up to a maximum of 10mm the day after (after sanding). With fast-drying levellers it is possible the same day, but that applies only to carpet or PVC. For parquet and linoleum we also advise waiting 24 hours before glueing on top of fast-drying levellers. The maximum thickness can be obtained with Niboplan DE from Bostik (4cm with a drying time of 1 day/cm of thickness. The best-selling product here is the Niboplan DIRECT, a C 50 - F 10 leveller (compressive strength> 50 N/mm² and can therefore cope with extremely high pressure afterwards). This product can be deployed as an industrial floor (top coat).

After leveling with Rubio® EasyFlow (-F), the floor is ready to cover as desired with tiles, laminate, carpet and of course parquet. In addition to Rubio® EasyFlow (-F) self-levelling compound, there is a complete Rubio® EasyBond range that consists of universal parquet adhesive, primers and tools for preparing the substrate. From preparation of the substrate to finishing the parquet, you don’t have to think twice. With Rubio Monocoat, you can get everything done.

Tover

Rubio Monocoat RUBIO® EASYFLOW (-F) EGALINES Rubio® EasyFlow self-levelling compound are for universal use and ideal as preparation for placing parquet and with other hard and soft floor coverings. These can, after priming, be used on all absorbent (mineral) substrates such as cement-bound and anhydrite screeds but also on non-absorbent substrates such as ceramic tiles. Rubio® EasyFlow self-levelling compound must be applied to a well-prepared subfloor that is free of dust and grease. Rubio® EasyFlow self-levelling compound is available in two versions: Rubio® EasyFlow for levelling from 3 to 15 mm and Rubio® EasyFlow-F for levelling up to 30 mm and floors with underfloor heating. Rubio® EasyFlow self-levelling compound distinguish themselves by being easy to mix without raising any dust and remain completely homogeneous right up to the end. They also need less water than traditional self-levelling compound so they dry out quicker.

In its range for substrate preparation in interior, Tover offers a highly advantageous self-leveling compound: Rockfloor F10. Its main features are long leveling time, thickness of application - up to 10 mm by coat and the possibility to lay the wood floor after only 24 hours. Fiberreinforced, it is particularly strong and its rough surface improves the adhesion of glues. Rockfloor F10 is perfectly suitable for underfloor heating. In order to improve the adhesion between the sub-floor to be leveled and the self-leveling compound we recommend applying the adhesion promoter Primer C4.

WHAT A COLOURFUL WORLD! YOUTHFUL FRIVOLITY PLUS ADULT SOBRIETY

Photo – Chimiver

The emergence of rigid minimalism in recent years did briefly threaten to bury the sumptuous use of colours of a few years ago under a plain cover of white, grey, and black. Colour was briefly reserved for playful and wild paintings where the palette certainly felt at home on a white background. Today, the use of colour is slowly trickling back into interior design, and that applies to our wooden floors as well, but wooden floors still tend to be plain and modest.

Colour dominates It’s phenomenal to discover how taste preferences and styles develop over the years. It’s even more phenomenal how that development is almost always shaped by a common shift. Today, we all like colour yet that might not be the case tomorrow. A few years ago, the world looked more of a ‘shade of yellow’ than ever before. That was the top trend; yellow in various shades gave our habitat atmosphere both in and outdoors. There have probably never been so many house walls

Visit www.floor-forum.com

painted or plastered in yellow in history as over the last 10 years. Then, suddenly, it fell out of fashion or it was ‘old’. The flock moved in the direction of more defined shades: black/white is perfect, but also blue/yellow or brown/orange if there was any contrast. We’re seeing a strong ‘revival’ of love for the ‘Cobra’: Alechinsky, Corneille, Appel, and Dotremont. Typical of the migration towards colour are the works of Delphine Boëlle, who ventures fearlessly to play out light-hearted red, blue, and green against a naïve white. This is child-like, seemingly easy, but with so much character and power.

Trends in floors Did you know that trend watchers in the world of paint keep a constant eye on the world of fashion? Trends in clothing usually dictate other trends. And so, manufacturers of floors such as laminate and parquet keep a close eye on the world of paint. Their sample cards give a good impression of what our interiors will look like in the near future.

Laminate, for instance In the world of laminate it’s not so difficult to go along with emerging trends. Since the laminate process means pressing a printed sheet of paper onto the bearer as a decorative layer, it is possible to follow colour trends quite flexibly and freely. And so, in recent years, we’ve seen a world of colours open up amongst trademark manufacturers. Amongst those colours we can identify the more ‘serious’ ones which are designed for the living room, dining room, or kitchen. Yet a whimsical style is also possible: pure shades of red, blue, green, and yellow can combine in playrooms and children’s rooms. The speed at which the laminate world reacts to trends or sometimes takes the lead is staggering.

It’s different with wood Wooden floors undergo their metamorphosis somewhat more slowly. Not only are lots of wooden floors fitted from a ‘floor for life’ perspective, but also they usually reflect the occupant’s personality from the very beginning. In other words, an interplay of green, red, and blue laminate tiles can be in fashion today and completely dated tomorrow. In that case, you remove the floor to fit another one. However, anyone who has fitted a white oiled oak parquet floor because it fits in perfectly with his or her (usually expensive) furniture and the ‘open spaces’ will not easily commit to revising that creation in a hurry.

colour ring in the wood itself can be supportive with some finishes. As with other paints, light colours expand the space, whilst dark colours are more intimate. Blanchon has a long list of colours on its web site.

Chimiver

Chemistry follows humbly Whilst white, grey, and even black shades are flourishing in lots of decoration elements, that craving for some colourful joy in the interior stubbornly continues to rise. Moreover, this phenomenon isn’t limited to the children’s room where youthful and often frivolous colours need to give a ‘child-like’ touch. We also see it in home offices, the living room, and in the kitchen. Colouring wood is no problem. There are various techniques for that purpose such as smoking, staining, applying lye, and such like. Almost all producers of parquet oil now have an assortment of ‘colour’ with a wide range of contemporary and timeless colours. Moreover, colour oils can still be combined with those other treatments such as applying lye or smoking and can be combined with each other. Coloured oils are usually prepared by adding pigments to the natural oil.

Striking: the time/space difference All producers of both floor coverings and accessories of all these colour products agree that trends do come round ‘at some point’. This doesn’t always happen at the same time or in the same place. That just makes the world a more colourful place!

What’s on the market ? Blanchon Two groups of colours stand out here. The main taste preference group accounts at once for 80% of the sales, namely shades of white and lightly coloured oak. Warmer shades are greatly appreciated in Southern Europe and France. White and various degrees of grey also sell well. Brown and extremely dark is the second group (20%). All types of wood are suitable. Softwood is possible in all colours and wood shades, but very dark shades are less suitable. Light shades or trendy colours are suitable. European deciduous trees are possible in all light nuances, with white and grey shades on top. Exotic types of wood do not really lend themselves to colours and neither do they need it. A

Who produces industrial parquet ?

THE STRIP WHICH DOESN’T ‘LIE DOWN’, BUT ‘STANDS UP’ SLIM AND FANCIFUL, YES, BUT ALSO DURABLE AND AS STRONG AS CONCRETE

Design Parquet - Carreau du Temple : Photo Mairie de Paris/ Florence Morisson

The look of industrial parquet is widely appreciated. We know this because this design is found in the decor range of other types of floors. ‘Industrial parquet’ as a decor appears in multilayer parquet, veneer floors, and even laminate. We wouldn’t be at all surprised if LVT or PVT floors emerged with that same coveted decor. We’re talking here about ‘the real McCoy’, namely solid wood parquet with a thickness of no less than 22mm!

What’s it about? ‘Industrial parquet’ is quite simply ‘industrial parquet’. The wood strips are fitted on their sides instead of on their bases. And so, it is the narrowest side of the strips which forms the final floor surface. This gives a highly vivid floor which nonetheless stays very straight. The fact that the widest side of the strips forms the height therefore means at once that you get an extremely thick floor.

Who produces industrial parquet ?

For generations

Industrial parquet 10-22mm

Industrial parquet (the Dutch word ‘hoogkantparket’ means ‘high-sided parquet’) comes in various thicknesses (10, 14, or 22mm). These floors seldom wear out, even after generations. Indeed, you can sandpaper and renovate them many times. If, for each sandpapering session, we remove 1mm from a 22mm thick floor (and 1mm is a lot) every 15 years (i.e. fairly frequently), we would be 300 years further after 20 sessions. Obviously, whether the home can reach that age is another matter.

Finally, last but not least, we have industrial parquet or, as they call it in the Netherlands, ‘high-sided parquet’.

Two specialists Design Parquet

No tongue and groove With industrial parquet we don’t have a tongue and groove. The strips are usually glued directly onto a dry screed, sandpapered, and finished with oil or lacquer. Industrial parquet is often fitted in oak, but also in other sorts such as teak and bamboo, for instance. Industrial parquet in dark tropical sorts is absolutely gorgeous, but then we’re usually talking about a floor for the happy few. That’s because solid wood in tropical sorts has the ‘down side’ that it certainly doesn’t come cheap.

Which thicknesses offer ‘solid wood’? The main types of solid wood floors are plank floors, strip parquet, mosaic parquet, panels or design floors, cross-cut wood, and industrial parquet.

Plank floors: up to 22mm These are solid wood planks which are usually 20 to 22mm thick. Plank floors are always mounted on beams. The essential difference between parquet and plank floors (wooden floors) is that plank floors are self-supporting, hence the thickness.

Strip parquet: 6-10mm This takes us to the domain of traditional parquet. The floorboards, which are usually 6 or 9mm thick, are glued and nailed onto a subfloor. The nail holes are sealed using the sawdust of the wood, which is mixed with a filler designed for that purpose.

Mosaic parquet: 6-10mm Mosaic parquet is constructed from strips 6 to 10mm thick which are combined according to a certain pattern. The most popular pattern is drafts board, but there is also herringbone, English bond, and interwoven. Mosaic parquet is glued onto the subfloor and then sandpapered and finished. The subfloor for strip parquet also appears in the shape of (oak) mosaic parquet of a lower sort.

Champagne Janisson : Photo Pace Architecte

Design Parquet manufactures industrial flooring in several species: oak, ash, acacia, beech, merbau (most used), komea and wenge. We offer several thicknesses declined in several widths and lengths according to the wood species. Our dimensions for oak are the following: 10x10x250, 14x20x250, 20x14x250, 22x8x160, 24x8x120 mm. Contrary to what is usually thought, the installation of industrial flooring is not more expensive compared to engineered flooring because it is performed for large areas. Industrial flooring needs to be filled, sanded and finished after the laying. There are many advantages of this type of flooring : its lifetime as it is made of 100% solid wood and can be renovated several times, its resistance because of the small strips. This flooring is also ecological (it is a recovery parquet) and gives rise to very modern decorations. Our achievements for public places attest to this: the Carreau du Temple in Paris, Riga Theatre in Latvia, etc..

Vanlandschoot Hout

Panels: 14-22mm Inlay parquet floors in pre-mounted panels (e.g. Versailles) allow for all possible designs. The wooden floorboards are glued sideways to each other and form a design which is ready to be laid or glued and enclosed in a square frame. There is a vast choice of designs.

Cross-cut wood according to choice Whilst traditional parquet planks and wooden plank floors are sawn along the length of the wood grain, cross-cut wood is sawn across the wood grain. Hence the distinction between quarter-sawn and crosscut wood. The surface of a cross-cut floor is a vivid interplay of annual rings and gives a completely different look to traditional floorboards. The floor consists of several small, square, or elongated blocks, and not planks. Due to the sawing direction, cross-cut wood is much harder and much more resistant to pressure than quarter-sawn wood. This is all due to the fact that the wood fibres stand upright.

Laminate: click systems examined

THE CLICK SYSTEM AND SURFACE TECHNOLOGY THE SECRET WEAPONS OF THE LAMINATE REVOLUTION test) determines the abrasion resistance. That leads once again to a division into abrasion classes AC1 to AC5, with AC5 being the highest class.

Impact resistance Impact resistance is measured using a steel ball which is dropped onto the laminate to establish a legally specified impact. This results in a division into classes IC1, IC2, and IC3. In relation to the user classes we see that classes 21, 22, 23, and 31 come under impact resistance class IC1 and classes 32 and 33 come under classes IC2 and IC3.

Compression resistance Compression resistance determines the extent to which fitting furniture affects the surface of the floor. It goes without saying that fitting a cupboard should not make any impression whatsoever on the floor. Photo BerryAlloc

In various editions of Floor Forum International we have shown clearly that laminate is a high-tech product. Laminate is all about technology! Various technological refinements have improved the durability, easy fitting, living comfort, low maintenance, and health and safety. Those improvements are separate from the appearance and look of the floor. Laminate works as follows: Once manufacturers have equalled each other technically, they focus their attention on decorative aspects and vice versa.

Surface technology EN 13329 has been in force in European countries since December 2000. This standard divides laminate up into two main categories, namely household and commercial. Within those two main categories the standard then subdivides laminate into three uses, namely light, medium, and heavy. Those classes are ‘user classes’ which indicate the use for which a floor covering is suitable. Various properties (which have to be tested!) relate to surface technology. The main ones for EN 13329 are properties which relate to the mechanical qualities of the floor e.g. abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and compression resistance.

Abrasion resistance Abrasion resistance is certainly one of the most important topics for establishing the class. A universally well known abrasion test (the Taber

42

Floor Forum International 106

Other properties Other properties relate mostly to the surface qualities of the laminate floor. For instance, UV resistance (to discolouration) and scratch resistance are major requirements. A number of those properties are defined in EN 438 such as resistance to burning cigarettes and resistance to stains.

Click systems The click system A multitude of refined decors and an ultra-protective top layer guarantee a successful floor. However, the technological wonder of laminate floors lies primarily in the click systems, which have been the subject of a hefty patent war for many years. Nowadays, patents are in the hands of a few, whilst they are used (under licence) by various manufacturers. In recent years, the various systems have grown closer together. An important point for attention is the tensile strength of the systems. After all, laminate is fitted floating. The core material (MDF or HDF) contains wood fibres which absorb more or less moisture (relative air humidity!), depending on the season. This humidity causes the floor to swell or shrink. This means that the objects on the floor (e.g. chairs, cupboards, or means of transport) also move. The strength of the ‘lock system’ should prevent the joints from opening up after just a few seasons. Another important point for attention is the simplicity of fitting a laminate floor. If laminate swears by its own ‘portability’, easy fitting is vital, and that depends primarily on the click system. The most recent innovation is undoubtedly the click system, which means that the floor can be fitted both by pressing (horizontally + connecting) and by shifting (vertically + lowering).

Subfloors : part 3

HOW A SUBFLOOR CAN BRING PEACE AND QUIET SLIGHT NOISES CAN HAVE GREAT EFFECTS

Photo – Insulco

If we glue a floor fully onto a floating screed, the problem of noise hardly ever arises. After all, the whole floor construction appears as one connected mass with no air layers. However, the issue of sound transfer with floating floors is another matter. Floating floors do not form a connecting mass with the subfloor. Moreover, the air layer beneath the floating floor causes sound reproduction. The effect (impact) of the sound of footsteps on the floor is also often disruptive. We all know the annoying ‘clicking noise’ of laminate and other floating floors. What do you do about it?

Impact noise versus airborne noise

How disturbing should it be?

Sound insulation and sound absorption

How disturbing should noise be before we intervene? We all strive for the highest possible degree of home comfort. ‘Silence’ or at least ‘serenity’ usually represents an important element in that comfort. Noise is not only annoying, but also it can be harmful to our health. For instance, anyone who operates a tree saw without using ear protectors runs the risk of permanent hearing damage. Even if that sounds like an extreme example, the effects of a much quieter, but constantly recurring sound can be just as significant psychologically. Recurring sounds get on our nerves and eventually cause irritation, which can lead to stress.

Sound insulation means the prevention of noise between two rooms. For that purpose the partition constructions need to be insulated efficiently. Sound absorption is the extent to which materials absorb sound without reflecting (echoing) it. In bare rooms with hard materials there is little sound absorption and the sound reflection (echoing) is therefore high, leading to a hollow sound and reverberation. The more light elements there are in the room (e.g. cloths, carpet, or absorbent panels), the better the absorption and the lower the reverberation.

Important distinctions

Subfloors for floating floors can usually be deployed for multilayer parquet floors, veneer floors, click-LVT, and laminate. In the instructions from manufacturers we generally note some considerable differences. Most subfloors appear in the form of more or less flexible (soft)

When it comes to the issue of noise, people tend to confuse quite a few terms. That is not really helpful because those different terms relate to ‘phenomena’ which require a different approach.

Visit www.floor-forum.com

The distinction between impact noise and airborne noise is probably clear to everyone. Airborne noise reproduces itself via the air, impact noise via structures. When we speak of noise nuisance, we can simply follow that distinction; airborne noise is the sound in the room where we ourselves are or in the adjoining room (e.g. noise from the sound of footsteps in the room itself), whilst impact noise is the noise which can be heard in the room below. In our fight against noise nuisance we also need to understand two other concepts, namely sound insulation and sound absorption.

panels, usually fitted with tongue and groove, or on rollers. Various trademarks provide for subfloors on rollers a self-adhesive overlap to join the strips to each other. The materials from which the subfloors are made are very different, but commonly recurring materials include polyester fibres, wood fibres, and foam (polyethylene). The latter is no surprise at all. Foam is basically a collection of countless air bubbles. That’s because air provides good insulation.

Two specialistst Bostik Bostik has for this purpose the insulation underlay based on cork rubber granulate, namely Nibolay TS 150. Nibolay TS 150 is a polyurethane cork rubber granulate mixture which is 3mm thick. This subfloor is absolutely ideal as an underlay to reduce sound (3mm yields a reduction of up to about 18dB) and provide heat insulation to improve living comfort under wood-engineered parquet, laminate, and solid parquet and on substrates of rough concrete, cement covering floors, wooden plank floors, chipboard, or on existing substrates such as parquet, ceramic tiles, PVC, and linoleum floor coverings. It is the combination of the cork and rubber which yields an improvement in the impact sound (with Nibolay TS 150 there is an improvement of 18dB).

How do you meet acoustic standards in a wooden construction? It is very hard to achieve good acoustic insulation between levels with light floors. In many cases it is even impossible to achieve the acoustic standard in force in Belgium for wood construction. To help achieve this, the BBRI has recently tested a new complex on a relatively thin and light wood structure. The proposed design is completely innovative. It makes it possible to retain the benefits of a light wooden structure and at the same time meet the demands of the latter acoustic standard in both new buildings and in renovation. The tested complex consisted of a double floating structure produced using insulWood and insulParq 2+ membranes. They invite you to discover the tested membranes and the obtained results by visiting the producer’s web site www.insulco.eu and clicking on the ‘wooden floors’ section.

Sanding machines : part 3

EDGE SANDERS REALLY DO GO TO THE EDGE PERFECTLY SMOOTH PARQUET FROM WALL TO WALL AND THEN THE STAIRS

Photo – Pallmann

Whilst we use the endless belt sander (the so called ‘ belt’) for the initial major sanding, we do finer sanding (partly to remove marks left by that belt) with a rotary disc or an orbital sanding technique. Both machines are complementary and vital parts of a professional parquet floor fitter’s machinery. However, neither machine is fully equipped to reach difficult places such as under radiators or on staircase steps. And so, what do we do then?

Expertise goes ‘to the edge’ We all know that private clients are getting more and more demanding. They expect professionals to deliver perfect work. There is little room for manoeuvre in that respect.

Standing out from the DIY enthusiast Whenever DIY enthusiasts roll up their sleeves to strip old and worn paint from an old deal or pitch pine wooden floor, you often see the same phenomenon i.e. generally a nice result over the entire surface, but there are usually still some traces of paint along the skirting boards. Whilst those DIY enthusiasts may be satisfied themselves with such results, professionals would not get away with it. And so, it is absolutely essential for professional floor fitters to have an edge sander. These machines reach places which are difficult to reach.

Difficult to reach? What does that mean? Places which are difficult to reach include the zones under radiators, strips next to walls, corners, and, something which is now increasingly part of a floor fitter’s job, the stairs. Edge sanders are the only solution here. They enable us to sandpaper right up against the wall. Most edge sanders have as an option or as standard an extension nose section which considerably enlarges the working depth under radiators, for instance, and some machines do this by up to 35cm. The machines are designed to be extremely manoeuvrable and usually easy to operate, even for inexperienced workers. The diameter of the sanding disc varies from trademark to trademark, but is usually 150 or 178mm. Edge sanders are designed so that they can easily be used for sandpapering staircase steps, for instance, through the addition of a Teflon sole.

Weight and shape make the difference It is now possible to reach those difficult places thanks to the special shape of the machines, but also due to the fact that their light weight makes them a lot easier to handle.

Lightweights If we compare edge and stair sanders with most other sanding machines, they stand out at once due to their weight. Belt sanders weigh up

to 60kg (hire machines) and 80kg (professional machines) respectively. Rotary disc sanders weigh about 30kg. Edge and stair sanders weight between 8 and 13kg. It is clear that heavier machines would be difficult to handle on stairs. The weight of the machines is just enough to exert the necessary pressure for efficient sandpapering.

Overmat Industries Need to sand those hard to reach areas? Within Overmat's wide range of grinding machines the Frank Gecko machines guarantee the best results for those hard to reach areas.

The shape of a spoon The sanding arm of edge and stair sanders is usually shaped like a spoon. That is exactly why it is possible to sandpaper under radiators and in other difficult places. Most manufacturers offer two different sanding arms, namely a long one and a short one. The lengths vary somewhat between the trademarks, but, in recent years, we have seen the emergence of more really short arms of 110 to 150mm as opposed to the normal length of 250 to 300mm. Some aspects are obviously related to a historical development with regard to radiators.

The importance of dust suction Dust suction is even more important to edge sanders than to other sanding machines, if that were possible. It seems quite logical that there is a greater volume of dust at the edges. After all, the main surface of the parquet floor has already been worked over twice with dust suction (with belt sander and rotary disc machine). That is not the case for the edges. And so, just about all edge sanders are equipped with excellent dust suction with dust reservoir and/or equipped with a facility to connect them to an external dust vacuum cleaning installation (unit).

WOODEN FLOORING AND AIR CONDITIONING A REMINDER OF SOME TECHNICAL POINTS FOR ATTENTION

Photo – Sopro

In the past, floor heating was always a subject of unverified myths, misunderstandings, and, especially, prejudices due to a lack of knowledge and information. Whilst there was some justification thirty years ago for viewing the ‘old’ systems

Floor heating and cooling systems

Extreme weather conditions

Concluding remarks

The coefficient conductivity and heat resistance play a crucial role in the efficiency of floor heating. The points for attention vary, depending on whether the fitting is glued or floating.

The combination of wooden flooring and floor heating meets client concerns in various ways. Floor heating is now all the rage with the growing demand for energy savings. Since floor heating works at low boiler temperatures, it consumes less energy than a classic heating installation. Parallel with the need for energy savings, there is also the growing preference for durability and natural materials. Wood has grown in popularity considerably in recent decades. The fact that the preference for wooden floors and the popularity of floor heating should cross each other’s path was surely written in the stars. The prejudices which ‘once’ existed have been refuted easily by pointing out the aforementioned ‘extremes’ to clients and the measures which have been taken in that context.

Glued The Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) recommends glueing parquet directly onto the covering floor. With glued fitting, resistance is determined largely by the thickness of the wooden floor. The BBRI has a rule of thumb for this. The following rule applies for a covering floor thickness of at least 50mm above the heat emission elements and if no account is taken of the heat resistance of the adhesives: The theoretical maximum recommended thickness of the wooden floor is 22mm for hardwood (including any subfloor) and 15mm for softwood.

One specialist Floating

Sopro

The suitability of a floating floor system for combination with floor heating is determined by two significant factors, namely the coefficient conductivity and the thickness of the floor (= heat resistance). The following is a rule of thumb for establishing the suitability of a subfloor for floor heating:

Slimline floor heating systems

- The permitted resistance for floor heating as the secondary heating = 0.18m².K/W - The permitted resistance for floor heating as the main heating = 0.14 m².K/W

Extreme temperatures With floor heating Floor heating is designed to heat up the floor. As the temperature rises, the wood will swell. That’s not a problem as long as the temperature stays within the limits. However, if the temperature rises too much, there is a risk of the wood splitting. The rule is that the temperature of a cement covering floor must not exceed 28°C. That’s why a distributor is used to ensure the source temperature does not exceed 45°C. Floor heating is also often used for low temperature heating such as a heat pump. This yields a temperature of 35-45°C, which is ideal for floor heating, but less suitable for radiators.

With floor cooling Obviously, the limit applies in the other direction for floor cooling. The colder the water which you pump through the system, the greater the effect. Some manufacturers recommend setting the cooling water at 15°C. However, the limit for parquet is set at 18°C . If cooler water goes through the pipes, there is a real risk of condensation resulting in damage to the parquet. Condensation monitoring can be applied in various ways. The simplest way is to fit a sensor to the coldest part of the installation, which switches off the cooling or cuts off the primary supply of cooled water to the installation when condensation is detected (the resistance reading is affected by a film of condensation on the sensor). A more intricate regulator calculates the dew point (= 100% moisture) and switches off the installation before it reaches the dew point (for instance with 95% moisture).

48

Floor Forum International 106

The achievement of contemporary living comfort is a key goal of building refurbishment projects. Here, the provision of a comfortable floor heating system is often a key requirement. However, inadequate space is generally available for standard floor heating assemblies. One solution is to use a modern slimline system, such as Kermi x-net C15, embedded in a specially optimized self-levelling surface filler such as the system-tested Sopro FS 15 550 floor-levelling compound produced by Sopro Bauchemie GmbH. This combination allows the installation of floor heating systems in coats with thicknesses upwards of 17 mm in conjunction with strong substrates. One particular merit of the slimline assembly is that heat is emitted almost directly to the floor covering. The thin construction allows operation of the heating system with a low flow temperature while nonetheless guaranteeing a very fast response time. Kermi x-net C15 heating systems thus combine flexible use with energy efficiency. Thanks its special drying behaviour, Sopro FS 15 550 is ready for bonding parquet, laminate and similar floor coverings after only 7 days.

PVC, vinyl, and LVT floors: extra business for floor fitters

THE FLOOR FITTER’S SHOPPING TROLLEY GETS BIGGER AND BIGGER THE SIZE OF THE RANGE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Photo BerryAlloc Collectie: spirit pro - Design: country caramel

The improvement in the quality of a whole series of floor coverings has induced parquet floor fitters to widen their range. Those other floors have won the respect of consumers through that refined quality, and that means floor fitters no longer consider those floors beneath their ‘ dignity’. Opening up to include other floor coverings immediately gives floor fitters access to the whole house: bedrooms, landings, the study, the play room, the kitchen, and, yes, the bathroom.

Consumers want a choice The idea of selling goods via an electronic channel has been common practice in the world of business for a long time. We call this e-business or e-commerce. Some people use those two terms as synonyms, whilst others see e-commerce as a component (on the sales side) of

e-business, which is the more comprehensive term. Digital shopping, which emerged mainly within a business-to-business relationship, has now certainly reached the consumer market, and how! Like a whirlwind! Or like a bulldozer! Its rise has been so fast and extensive that some people have doubts about whether or not existing retail models can survive. What stands out now? That the real big guns which dominate global e-commerce are those companies with the biggest range. Of the so called ‘dot coms’ it’s the giants who survive. Amazon.com is a good example. It started by selling books and CDs, but now you can probably order toothbrushes as well. In other words, consumers want the widest possible choice at a single address. We also see that same attitude towards choosing floor coverings, although, thankfully, that is still done ‘analogue’. The vendor which offers EVERYTHING gets the most customers inside the store.

PVC, vinyl, and LVT floors: extra business for floor fitters

Parquet traders are alert Even parquet floor fitters trained in the traditional way have now realised that standing still means going backwards. You have to be prepared to adapt or else you sink. To arrive at that realisation, parquet traders had to grasp two important insights. Faith in the value of the products so that the idea of a one-stop-shop becomes acceptable is one of them. Secondly, parquet traders have had to shed their fear of cannibalisation.

The value of the articles As we’ve already said, it was mainly the improved quality of a whole series of other floors that induced parquet floor fitters to extend their ranges. Those other floors have won the respect of consumers through that refined quality, and that means floor fitters no longer consider those floors beneath their ‘dignity’. Vinyl, PVC, linoleum, cork, laminate, and bamboo are all floor coverings which now ‘cut the mustard’.

No cannibalisation Parquet floor fitters have been plagued for years by the fear that if you ‘win’ a customer for laminate, LVT, or something similar, you ‘lose’ that customer for parquet. That argument does sound logical at first sight; anyone who fits laminate on the landing or in the children’s room certainly isn’t fitting parquet. However, the misconception lay in the fact that professionals underestimated the end users. Whenever consumers opted for laminate or cork in the bedroom, it was a conscious choice, usually after much deliberation. In other words, if a particular floor fitter isn’t prepared to fit laminate or cork, the customer will look for another professional who will fit those floors.

The shopping trolley Partly thanks to digital print technology, it is possible to get one and the same decor for a particular floor covering for other floor coverings as well. That means we can offer customers a continuous floor which consists of different forms of technology, adapted more or less to the application. What riches floor fitters have!

Solid wood parquet There was a time when a parquet floor fitter’s headquarters consisted of nothing more than a room with a few samples (usually in oak) and behind that room a workshop with a woodwork machine. The table in the consultation room housed a photograph album of references. The major part of fitting a traditional parquet floor took place on site. The older generation of parquet floor fitters simply weren’t open to innovations or products and systems which deviated from tradition.

Multilayer

50

in their masses, possibly also because laminate has been a real success story.

Pre-finished If laminate is regarded as a fully fledged alternative to wooden floors, the same applies a fortiori to pre-finished floors. These floors, which are completely ready for fitting, are finished in the factory and save floor fitters a lot of time on site. Pre-finished floors are equipped with a click system and are fitted in identical fashion to laminate.

Cork Originally, cork appeared in two forms. There was cork to be glued and cork floors to be fitted floating. Obviously, we also have cork as a wall furnishing. Cork floors are glued by glueing both the tiles and the subfloor. They are pressed into place with a rubber hammer. Floating cork floors are comparable with parquet and laminate in many respects. They usually have a click system so that they can be fitted quickly and easily.

Bamboo Bamboo isn’t wood, but rather a type of grass. However, thanks to its often outlined production techniques, bamboo lends itself ideally to making wooden panels from which parquet can be produced. As regards type, the various bamboo floor coverings are the same as what the wooden flooring market offers. And so, this is also something for parquet floor fitters.

Vinyl tiles and planks A vinyl floor is an elastic synthetic (PVC) floor covering consisting of several layers, namely the bottom layer or back, a protective fibre-glass layer, the design, and the top layer. The durability of vinyl depends on the thickness of the top layer and the solidarity of the base structure. An extra protective layer increases the scratch and wear resistance. There are big differences in quality and price within the range.

PVC tiles PVC is an ideal material for floor production. It is waterproof and thereby suitable for damp rooms. 100% PVC floors are even suitable for showers. They are highly durable thanks to the reinforcement PU coating. PVC floors appear nowadays in a wide variety of decors. In recent years, here, too, we have seen the emergence of click systems so that these floors can be fitted floating quickly and easily. We refer to those floors as Click PVC.

Linoleum

It was a big step to accept multilayer parquet. Obviously, that step is now history, but in those days it required parquet floor fitters to ‘deviate from the normal system’ to a new working method. The classic floor structure (subfloor and final floor) was put in place in advance with these multilayer floors. However, the benefits soon became clear. Two and three-layer parquet has conquered the world. Floating fitting made its entrance.

Linoleum has made great strides over the years. It is no longer the floor covering which some of us will remember from hospitals. Linoleum was given that ‘lead role’ due to its antibacterial properties and its great durability and wear resistance. These floors are extremely easy to maintain and, in their fully glued form, they have excellent acoustic properties. Nowadays, linoleum is available in lanes, strips, and tiles. The possible choices in terms of decors and colours are well nigh endless. Here, too, producers have discovered the click system.

Laminate

‘Other’ floors

The most shocking event for parquet floor fitters was undoubtedly the entrance of laminate. In the early days, very few parquet floor fitters were prepared to ‘stoop down’ to fit such a counterfeit floor. Now, it must be said that in the early days the quality of laminate floors left a lot to be desired. Nowadays, however, we find premium laminate floors in the upper segment. Parquet floor fitters have been converted

For several years now, most floor producers have profiled themselves as innovation-driven. That’s why, in recent years, ‘new’ types of floors have been developed which are often combinations of previous floor coverings. Vinyl with cork, wood and cork, wood with vinyl, and laminate with vinyl or even leather spring to mind here. Others launch floors which are undoubtedly based on a different (unique) technology.

Air humidifiers for consumers: a necessity

AIR HUMIDIFIERS AND ACCESSOIRES A MUST IN THE RANGE OF A PARQUET SPECIALIST steam humidification it is necessary to heat the water first. This is done inside the ‘insert’ of a vaporiser. The hot steam discharges its excess heat into the air so that sometimes the room temperature will rise. Cold steaming is another form of air humidification whereby the dry air is sucked out of the room by means of a ventilator and circulated again with damp. A special element is soaked in water or sprayed constantly with water. Since the air passes by the damp element, the water evaporates and the dampened air comes back into the room. A third type of humidification works on the basis of ultrasonics. High-frequency vibrations under water (which are therefore inaudible) transform the water into a micro-fine mist, which is driven into the room via a silent ventilator. Ultrasonic air humidifiers consume little energy; the energy required for the evaporation process is extracted from the air in the room.

We know that damp can be hazardous for wooden floors. However, the advantage of that knowledge is that we take account of it and take action to counter accidental damp. Dryness is even more hazardous in its own way. Indeed, dryness is invisible and cannot be detected so quickly. If wood is ‘too dry for too long’, this can cause irrevocable damage. And so, floor fitters should present air humidifiers along with accompanying advice. That is just as important as selling felt pads for under chairs and table legs. The good thing here is that it does yield plenty of income for floor fitters.

The need for a balance The relative air humidity is the percentage of water in the air in relation to the maximum amount at a certain temperature and air pressure. The air humidity can vary hugely in the open air. We speak here of fluctuations of 20% and less up to 100%. The relative air humidity indoors is usually between 40 and 60%. It can also show considerable variations indoors under the influence of ventilation, heating, and the weather. A dramatic fall in air humidity is the most ‘treacherous’ variation. After all, dryness is a particular hazard in occupied rooms and usually there are no indications to show that a room is ‘too dry’. The advantage of an excessively low air humidity is that it can be rectified quite simply. We can use an air humidifier to give the surrounding air extra damp.

Types of air humidifiers We can identify roughly three forms of technology. As the name suggests, steam humidifiers work on the basis of steam. For efficient

Easy to sell! Few products are as easy to sell as an air humidifier. There is a wide range of devices, aesthetically there is a device to suit just about any interior, and you only have to ask a few questions to ascertain which is the right type. Depending on the answers, there are a few points for attention. For instance, you don’t need the same capacity/volume for the bedroom as you do for a generally much more spacious living room. Lighter devices are available for up to 25m², medium ones for 25 to 60m², and heavier ones for spaces of more than 60m². If the device is for the bedroom, the sound level is extremely important. In bedrooms for babies or children it is also important that the device does not exude hot energy. Apart from the air humidifier itself, floor fitters can also offer several accessories.

Hygrometers Some (but not all) air humidifiers have an integrated moisture meter (hygrometer). A separate hygrometer keeps you constantly informed of the air humidity in the room.

Cleaning products The right cleaning products help to ensure that dirt and bacteria do not get lodged in the device. These resources keep the water and the device clean and ensure that it always operates efficiently.

Odour If your air humidifier is suitable for this purpose, you can use fragrance oil to ensure a pleasant aroma. Just a few drops are usually enough to do that.

∂ Industry news DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR launches the first Southeast Asian Business Hub

Shanghai. China has long been the country that comes to mind when importers hear the term “manufacturing hub”. And China does still hold some major competitive advantages over its smaller manufacturing counterparts. However with the last few years U.S. tariffs against China there has been a slowdown in the commercial relations between the two countries. Several Chinese producers have found a solution in moving part of their production lines to Southeast Asian countries. This move not only helps them control quality and keep prices as low as before but it also enables business dealings with their U.S. counterparts. The most common countries chosen in the region are Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam. Keeping up with the trend, the 22nd edition of DOMOTEX asia/ CHINAFLOOR launches the first Southeast Asian Business Hub - an exclusive area showcasing resilient and wood flooring exhibitors with production facilities in the Southeast Asian region. The Hub is located in N2 Hall of the Shanghai New International Expo Center and is ideally situated in the center of the Hall, thus becoming a gateway for the first Southeast Asian representation. With more than 800 sqm booth space and a distinguished area, the Hub will undoubtedly attract attention of the industry professionals. Royal Crystal – one of the leading Vietnamese flooring brands booked the space a few days after the announcement of the new area. The domestic companies are also lining up for a booth in the Southeast Asian Business Hub. One of the first comers is Tianzhen Flooring. Established in 2003 in Anji city, the company has a long history of export to the USA, Europe, Canada, Korea, Japan and Australia. Last year they decided to move a part of their production lines to Vietnam and since last month the factory is operational and producing LVT, WPC and SPC flooring.

HARO Living on the water – in the middle of Berlin Berlin - “Wasserstadt – Mitte”, a modern, urban residential area, is being developed in a unique water setting around the Kornversuchsspeicher, a historic former grain test storage facility in the heart of Berlin. This major inner-city project with the singular character will have space for offices, shops and about 3,000 flats.

One section of this residential project was completed this year, and Hamberger Flooring supplied the flooring for the 500 flats in it. One of the most exciting projects in the metropolitan Berlin is arising in the city district of “Mitte” (centre). Just a stone’s throw away from Berlin’s Central Train Station, “Europa-City” and more than 35,000 new jobs are being created. The area located along the Berlin-Spandau ship channel will become a new pulsating neighbourhood consisting of flats, office buildings, shops, public streets, squares and green spaces. Cafés, restaurants and a shopping centre will create a pleasant residential and working environment in the neighbourhood. Plans call for a total of about 268,000 m² of commercial and retail space as well as about 920 flats – 25 percent of which are being built as subsidised housing under the Berlin model of cooperative urban development. The striking landmark in “Wasserstadt Mitte” will be the historic, protected Kornversuchsspeicher that will offer room for culture and innovation following renovation and will thus serve as a binding element to the neighbouring art campus at the Hamburg Train Station. With its stunning brick façade, the dazzling structure serves as the aesthetic compass for the area and creates a link to individual buildings. A home with a view of water – in the heart of Berlin

“Tariffs have resulted in manufacturing being developed in countries in Southeast Asia, mostly though Asian manufactures expanding into different countries” – says Thomas Baert, president of Firmfit and CFL Flooring – “uncertainty will not disappear anytime soon, even if certain 301 tariffs have recently been rescinded. Our target is to be able to continue to provide flexible solutions that are above geopolitical risks”. Earlier this year CFL also moved some of the production lines to Vietnam. For residents of Berlin, such a neighbourhood reaches a dimension that they could only describe as virtually idyllic, a location right on the channel with a view of green spaces and water. The flats have sunny balconies from which residents can take in the unbelievable view. The residential buildings are grouped around the green courtyards, the multi-feature place where people can relax and talk. No traffic noise in the centre of a metropolitan area – this luxury is being brought to life. Read more on www.floor-forum.com/en/news

BELGIUM STILL FORMS AN ‘ODD’ UNION WILL THE CONFEDERATION EVER BECOME A FACT? We’ve now entered the sixth month since federal elections in Belgium. The results are meagre: Brussels, Flanders, and Wallonia all now have a government, but at federal level there is a complete stalemate at the time of writing. Those responsible for talks seem to show no sense of urgency. This raises the question as to just how important that federal level really is. At all events, as long as the federal level exists, it certainly has to be covered. Otherwise the void leads to paralysis.

Contrasts from way back There were contrasts in Belgium from the very start. Belgium is actually a formally delineated ‘buffer state’. The Belgians in the various parts of the country have no cultural, social, or historical affinity with each other and that does make it a colourful country, but at the same time it’s a time bomb!

Each in turn Economically, Belgium has always been a land of ‘each in turn’. Flanders is now more wealthy than Wallonia, but the exact opposite was true early in the 20th century when emerging industries gave the Walloon economy a boost, whilst Flanders clung to farming. After World War II, heavy industry in Wallonia fell into decline and could only survive with the help of lavish state support. Flanders has profited from the emergence of light industries, the ports, and investments from foreign companies.

Uneven pace The growing prosperity in the different regions is still very unequal. If you look at turnover, Flemish urban areas or city regions have an economic vitality five times greater than in Wallonia; investments in Flanders are four times greater. The average income per head of population also varies greatly. Income in Flanders is amongst the highest in Europe (20% above average), whilst in Wallonia it is 10% below the European average. Brussels Capital City Region retains its strong position. In Flanders, the major economic powerhouses are Antwerp, Ghent, and the Flemish periphery around Brussels. In Wallonia, Liege and Charleroi have suffered major blows. The Antwerp-Ghent-Brussels triangle has is now one major economic region with all the socio-economic problems which that brings.

to pay for those measures any more either. The election results in 2019 show that the people of Flanders are ripe for a ‘different’ form of co-operation.

Towards a confederation? Despite the fact that Belgium is a federal country, it still has a central authority. Indeed, Belgium collects the money from corporate tax, personal income tax, VAT, withholding tax, and such like and gives this to the federal states. And so, the federal states can decide what they want and they continue to receive money from the federal government. For instance, the regions can employ civil servants, but the pension costs later are for the federal government. That is why a lot of Flemings, in particular, feel that the regions do not benefit enough from their own decisions. A lot of Flemings want a confederation, an alliance between two or more independent states. They would do everything separately, except for the parts for which they conclude agreements. Time will tell whether or not that confederation will ever come.

All Belgians love wood This is one of the few joint love affairs. Belgians love wooden floors to an increasingly greater extent. On the European scale Belgians are not great producers, but consumption is relatively high. As the smallest parquet country in Europe, Belgium accounts for 0.66% of the total production (2012). Whilst the European production volume has fallen, the Belgian share has risen to reflect an increase in the amount of square metres produced (450,556m² in 2012). Belgium is still the smallest producer, followed by Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Hungary. On the other hand, the number of consumers who choose parquet is rising. Belgium accounts for 3.59% of the European consumption, a figure which puts the country ahead of Rumania, Hungary, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. In 2012, consumption in the FEP countries fell by no less than 5.88% to a figure of 87,509,000m². However, Belgium’s share of the total consumption has risen to 3.63%, but actual consumption fell from 3,328,952m² to 3,176,576m².

Economics and politics Economics and politics are obviously closely related. That applies even more emphatically in Belgium mainly because the ways in which the economic differences are approached lead to solutions which are diametrically opposed to each other. Wallonia certainly wants to emerge from its dip, but there are plenty of Flemings who don’t want to go on paying for it any longer. The success of the socialists in Wallonia, including in the recent elections, speaks volumes. They want to eradicate the prosperity gap partly by means of all sorts of social measures which do not involve any structural progress. The Flemings don’t want

In 2005, Pattyn Vernissen itself was taken over by Debal coatings. In 2006, they merged all activities and set up a brand new company. Those years of knowledge and experience via the various firms have enabled Ciranova to expand from trading only in waxes to a full range of finish products with unique lye stains, oils, varnishes, and maintenance products. In 2015, they built and opened a new warehouse (2000m²). In 2020, they will be using new offices, laboratories, and demo rooms to equip themselves more fully to cope with international growth. SOUDAL Soudal started in 1966 as a welding company specialising in car bodywork repairs. The company has come a long way in transforming itself into a family multinational specialising in chemical solutions for the building industry; one word pervades the transformation: innovation. ‘If you leave everything as it is, nothing will change.’ That was the guiding principle of founder Vic Swerts when Soudal was formed in 1966 and that is still the case now. The Soudal Group is now Europe’s biggest independent producer of putty, glues, and PU foams for both professional and private users. The Soudal Group makes products for its own trademark and private labels in seven groups: silicones and other types of putty, PU foams, adhesives, hybrid polymers, technical aerosols, and construction chemicals. With its own trademarks, the Soudal Group focuses on three market segments, namely construction, industry, and retail. Soudal has progressed from an annual turnover of a handful of francs in 1966 to 835 million euros in 2018. That figure represented a 10.5% increase in turnover as compared to 2017. Soudal presently employs about 3100 people, about one third of whom work at the headquarters in Turnhout. Vic Swerts comments: ‘You have to surround yourself with good and capable people who can do things better and know more than you do.’ The group’s annual capacity (in m²/l/kg) is 105,000,000 foam cans, 260,000,000 shafts, 10,000,000 tubes, and 100,000,000kg of silicones and glues. In 2020, as in previous years, Soudal will continue to launch efficient and ecological products. The focus there is on reducing VOCs, refining ergonomics, and reducing impact on the environment. With the development of floor and wall furnishing materials and methods, an extension of the floor and wall adhesive products is in their programme for 2020. A major recent step has been the purchase of 4.3 hectare company premises from the former Sunnyland in Everdongenlaan, which was completed officially in February 2018. From 2019 onwards, work will start on the construction of a brand new production hall. Soudal already operates globally with no fewer than 44 sales offices and 19 production plants and Soudal exports its products to over 138 countries. Soudal is still a 100% Belgian family business. +32 (0) 14 42 42 31 - info@soudal.com / www.soudal.com

VANLANDSCHOOT HOUT Vanlandschoot Hout speaks of multilayer parquet from a top layer of 2.5mm. They have two-layer parquet in their range, namely a multiplex with a solid wood top layer of 3, 4, or 6mm. Oak in various qualities and widths is still the most popular type of wood. Moreover, they also produce other exotic types of wood (see their website for more information). Their raw parquet floors account for 80% of all their production, whilst the other 20% are finished floors. However, pre-finished floors are getting more popular. Their floors are perfectly suitable for both new construction and renovation. They like to have the fit and quality recognised by a good professional fitter. For the production of semi-solid parquet they use cold glueing. A birch multiplex is the best base for a two-layer floor. The bottom layer which they use is also a birch multiplex. New in their range is rustic R with open gnarls and heart shakes. You will find more information on their website.
