Kaneka is the Japanese company who developed the well-known MS polymers and has been a leading player for decades in the development of new adhesives, also in the parquet industry. Viki Wouters, “We have broadened our vision Sales & Marketing Representative at some time ago and can also offer Kaneka Belgium solutions for other flooring systems, such as LVT or ceramic tiles, even in humid areas. However, these solutions might be less known in the market compared to the parquet adhesives.” It is important to realize that materials have a certain movement. The adhesive that is being used needs to adapt to this. “The big success of MS Polymer in the industry is due to the permanent elasticity of the adhesive. Because of that, it allows the floor to move, without breaking the adhesive. It is also an eco-friendly alternative to solvent based adhesives : MS PolymerTM is free of solvents and harmful isocyanates. Therefore, it is a safer alternative to PU-based adhesives.” The biggest challenge for a good adhesion of LVT floors is the great diversity in the composition of the floors. “At Kaneka we developed a product range of acryl modified MS Polymers years ago with an improved adhesion onto plastics such as PVC and other low surface energy substrates. Today these products are already being used in LVT floors based on MS, for dry and wet areas, for flooring and walls. The broad adhesion profile makes it suitable for most LVT types that can be found on the market.”

Devo® Lignum Pura Really ‘invisible’ – you can’t see it! Now what if really invisible also means durable, biological, hard-wearing, and, if possible, user-friendly and low-maintenance? Do you think that’s impossible? Until now, anyone who has invested in durable and biological lacquers has always had to compromise in terms of product performance. Anything that was biological or ecological was usually neither hard-wearing nor user-friendly and vice versa. The Devo® laboratory technicians have been labouring away quietly to find an innovative product formula with a new sort of vegetablebased binding agent. Sadly, the corona pandemic has delayed the development of the product somewhat, but we are now ready with a product to astonish you, namely Devo® Lignum Pura! Benefits: - Once Devo® Lignum Pura is dry, it does not discolour the wood at all and the product is so matt that the end result really is invisible. A plank treated with Devo® Lignum Pura cannot be distinguished from a plank with no protective layer! - Devo® has drastically reduced the proportion of fossil raw materials by using a high-tech bio-polyurethane binding agent. - The extreme matt finish of the binding agent means that no matt agent is added. This greatly reduces the susceptibility to streaks. Moreover, the finished floor is very hard-wearing and not susceptible to glossy streaks! - With a rapid drying time of barely two hours per coat, professionals can finish the floor with two to three coats without streaks in a single day!

GOOD FITTING STARTS WITH THE RIGHT TOOL A PERMANENTLY ATTRACTIVE TERRACE IS FITTED WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS

Photo – Impertek

Fitting a terrace is no easy job and the market is well aware of that. If you want a perfectly fitted terrace, it should be done in line with best practices, certainly if you use solid wood which swells and shrinks. Otherwise, that splendid dazzling outdoor area soon becomes an eyesore. Various issues mean that you have to start with the right tools and we cover that in more depth in this article.

Essential: adjustable floor supports As regards the right tools, pedestals or adjustable floor supports immediately spring to mind. Indeed, a perfectly fitted terrace starts (and finishes) with the best possible approach to that component which supports the floor. Pedestals are certainly not new, but they have been further refined in recent years with particular attention being paid to ever greater fitting convenience and, as a result, time-saving and profit for the fitter.

8

Floor Forum International 112

It is important to note for pedestals for outdoor use, which are usually made of synthetics, that it is best if they are adjustable in the height without a step. Amongst other things, it is worth knowing that they are designed not only for use with wood, but also for virtually all sorts of tiles, whether we are talking about concrete tiles, ceramic tiles, or tiles in natural stone. For that matter, we are seeing increasingly that terrace foundations are moving more and more towards aluminium. A big advantage with these tools is that what is fitted remains neat and stable in its place and that under tiles, for instance, there is still space for cables and pipes. They also immediately help to spread the total weight of the upper structure on the base, and that can be vitally important for fitting in a place with limited bearing strength, such as a balcony. Most importantly, you are armed against the arch enemy of wood, namely damp. Remember here that the support structure must never come into contact with the ground and that you provide ventilation under the terrace. That means that you leave an open space at the sides.

Beam support and slope corrector It is best to use pedestals in combination with beam supports (with a wooden terrace and composite materials) and a slope corrector. Beam supports are available in a kit and are fastened to the tile bearers, something which can also be done by clicking. A slope corrector is an adjustable plate which is slid under the pedestal and which you use literally to offset the slope whilst the terrace is fitted. For that matter never forget that you need a gentle slope on the base for drainage purposes!

Invisible fastening What is also clear is that there is an undeniable trend towards invisible fastening. This success should not surprise us because in this way you kill two birds with one stone. You work more durably because you avoid damage from drilling into the wood and, moreover, you give the wood the necessary space to swell and shrink as nature intended. Does all this mean that the more classic tools have had their day? Not at all, and you will see that in this article. From space tools to the ageold and stylish spirit level (with or without a laser), you can best make sure that you have them in your possession.

What’s on the market ? Burger The Grad concept in a nutshell: 4 different types of aluminium rails available pre-fitted with clips. The Grad clip is the first hidden fastener solution for wooden decks, and the only system known to meet DTU 51-4 from the FCBA. The system ensures all boards are spaced perfectly. Thanks to our Grad 3D software, it is possible to customize the rail configuration to fit

your needs. Our Top LiftÂŽ blocks and their extensions allow a terrace height of up to 400 mm. This system increases the durability of the deck because there is no contact between the ground and the wooden planks, therefore water cannot permeate the wood. Our system is designed for all types of professionals and features many unique advantages. Since it requires no drilling or screws, individual boards are easy to remove, replace, and update, and it can be installed up to 50% than other decking systems. In addition, the Grad structure is backed by a 30-year limited warranty.

the terrace correctly: the WPC staves for the decking are installed on a subconstruction framework made of aluminium joists, that can be installed on a single or double layer. The staves are connected to the joists thanks to special clips in nylon or stainless steel. Under the joists, PVC pads are installed, with a thickness of 3 mm. The pads allow to level the substrate and let the rain water flow under the structure. In case of high differences in height, adjustable jack supports can be provided. Novowood provides materials and accessories that allow to create terraces that respond both to aesthetic and technical necessities, confirming the ability of the company to provide complete solutions for WPC decking.

Progress Profiles

Decking materials must be choosen carefully, with a high respect of hygrometric rates. Decking will be needed for the structure, and will be laid on supports to avoid any contacts with the floor. Decking protection elements along with quality screws are important. An acceptable decking structure must be compliant with French regulation DTU 51.4. Air flow across the decking as well as good protection are essential to guarantee a long life cycle. Decking cover tape are aiming to protect against moisture. Decking structure can also be composed of aluminium structure so as to guarantee a long lifetime. Invisible fixation are of great use in decking protection because it avoids direct screwing on the ledger board surface. Composite decking boards will need some specific screws to be installaed, whereas ledger board request some adapted ones. JOUPLAST速 suggests invisible fixing system for ledger boards called FIXEGO速. You can also find great decking cover tape in its range as well as some rigded wedges as supports, or aluminium decking structure called PROFILDECK速 that allows creation of ceramic terrace, wooden or composite decking.

Stair renovation

RESTORATION IS THE NEW NORMAL In this article we consider various traders in professional staircase renovation. There are several of them and, moreover, they cover just about all the materials available on the market, including solid wood, PVC, laminate, aluminium, and vinyl. We won’t limit ourselves to just one type of basic material. Our only criterion is that it must be used for either renovation or restoration. Obviously, we have to give the full picture, so that also means paying attention to the accessories. As you might suppose, there are several degrees in staircase renovation. The first of them is by far the easiest. The staircase has done many years of service and is looking rather ‘weary’. In that case a few simple operations will suffice. You sandpaper the surface all over (at least in the case of wood), carry out any small repairs as necessary, and then, for instance, apply a finish lacquer and that’s it. With a renovation (just to be absolutely clear, this is an operation to ensure that the staircase is preserved and retains all its bearing strength and stability), however, the job is not quite so simple. That’s logical. After all, with a renovation, it will almost certainly be time to freshen up the rest of the surrounds, so the staircase is merely part of a comprehensive renovation. How the staircase is renovated depends in the latter case on the choice of style for the total interior renovation. If, for instance, you opt for a minimalist style all over, it is logical that the staircase fits in with that. In this case there are no frills and no ornamental gems, but rather a finished whole which fits in seamlessly with the rest with a highlight in a contrasting colour at the most.

How does it work out in practice?

Photo – MEISTER

A staircase has seen better days, so we face a big decision. What do we do about it? The solution which most people automatically seem to consider is to demolish that staircase and replace it with a new one. However, when they give the matter some further thought, they realise that demolition is no easy matter and that restoration might just be a better option.

14

Floor Forum International 112

If we consider the various players, what stands out mainly is that the range is very wide and that many players strive to offer a comprehensive picture. That applies not only in the area of style, but also in terms of types of materials. A number of trends do stand out. For instance, it is clear that the combination of wood and metal is still trendy and that wooden staircase steps are often fitted with stainless steel or even aluminium banisters. Another trend is that people are clearly paying more attention to safety. This means that professionals are looking first and foremost for ways to make the staircase anti-slip. However, safety also means lighting and in that respect we are not only seeing an advance in sidelights, but we can also say that the use of led lights is gradually becoming standard.

An overview

floor. This unique look is now ensured by the MEISTER stair nosing, which is available with an L and a U profile. The profiles are here coordinated with the surfaces of the Longlife parquet collections Penta PD 450, Cottage PD 400 and Classic PD 200. Elegant stair nosing for Nadura and Lindura There is now also an elegant stair nosing (Type 11) for the 11 mm thick Wood Powder floor. This is also available in the colours sand, stainless steel and silver.

Auer Metallprofile Auer Metallprofile offers the right profile for every staircase and every covering height, whether for a better slip resistance on a new staircase, for the occupation with a new surface or for the renovation of worn steps. Auer has for staircase renovation for instance two profiles out of stainless steel for flooring heights from 2-22 mm - insert profile with nose and inside corner. According to the manufacturer, these profiles are produced in individual insertion heights as well as for straight and round steps. The flooring is pushed against the inside corner from both sides - a brushed stainless steel decorative edge remains visible. With these two profiles, it is possible to present high quality flooring in a very exquisite design and in addition to that they score with their high stability and long service life. Carl Prinz For stair renovation, Prinz manufactures stair nosing profiles for a wide variety of floor coverings with thicknesses from 2 to 18 mm. Safety is top priority, therefore stair nosings are designed to be extremely strong and resilient. Some profiles are equipped with slip resistant grooves on the upper surface, or may even be combined with special anti-slipping inserts. Prinz stair nosings are universally applicable for all staircases with closed stairblocks, whether straight or winding. All two-piece sections for design floorings, laminate or parquet, such as DESIGN STEP, are designed in a way that either only the tread or both tread and riser can be covered. For the DESIGN STEP-System, the customer can even choose between a screw or a clip section. For open or profiled staircases, one-piece profiles like the stair nosing no. 299 can be used, which offer the possibility to insert a strip of the flooring to the front panel. On top, Prinz offers a range of LED stair nosings that can be covered with flooring almost completely, so that only a few millimeters of the profile remain visible. At the same time, the LED lighting ensures safety.

MEISTER MEISTER presents its new stair nosing With the new Longlife stair nosing made of parquet, every specialist can now round off stairs perfectly with MEISTER parquet. With this product, MEISTER is reacting to the increasing trend of also building stairs in living areas. Here, it is very important for the consumer that the colour of the stairs goes perfectly with the colour of the parquet

Progress Profiles In case of stair renovation, it’s essential to check out to the quality of the material used and to choose profiles to protect stairs exposed to wear. Progress Profiles offers a wide and extremely versatile range of stair nosing profiles, which represent a perfect solution for all applications. PROSTAIR ACC is a step protecting technical profile designed and conceived to make the step scales made of ceramic, porcelain stoneware and others nonskid and non-slip ones. PROSTAIR GRIP ACC, instead, is a shaped satined stainless-steel stair profile consisting of a punched flange, which ensures perfect anchorage to the substrate, of a horizontal visually exposed surface with the carborundum stripe insert and a vertical visually exposed flat surface. The most important accessory is PROGRIP, a self-adhesive carborundum adhesive strip. It consists of a plastic film plus abrasive granules with high resistance to wear and normally used to ensure safety on steps in public and private environments.

Q-Stair Solid wood threshold steps! Nowadays, a staircase is not only necessary, but it is also an eye-catcher in a room. EXPRESSION OF THE ULTIMATE INDIVIDUAL HOME ENVIRONMENT THE SKIRTING BOARD – THE MOST UNDERESTIMATED INTERIOR ELEMENT OF ALL ACCESSORIES? wall from damage, but also serves as decoration for a floor finish and an interior. With wooden floors (parquet or laminate), skirting boards also serve to cover joints between floor and wall. And so, it is made of wood or MDF and sometimes in a certain profile.’ If we summarise the rest of the description, we also read, for instance, that skirting boards consist of aluminium or synthetics. The article also states that skirting boards are sometimes fitted around tile floors in the same tiles or in natural or synthetic stone and that hollow skirting boards are often fitted in places where hygiene is a necessity. Finally, the article considers transfer or renovation skirting boards and states that wires for electrical appliances, home cinema, and domotics can be accommodated out of sight in hollow skirting boards. Moreover, the article concludes by stating that matching corner and end pieces can often be supplied with decorative skirting boards and that skirting boards can usually be extended into the door frames which run all the way down to the floor.

If there were a prize for the most underestimated interior element, skirting boards would have a good chance of a top three finish. Anyone who builds or renovates thinks primarily of items such as walls, doors, flooring, and lights; yet people tend to forget that a finish isn’t complete until all the details are in place. Skirting boards are possibly the most important finish detail of a living room or office. If you look for more information about skirting boards specifically for use indoors, it soon becomes clear from the range that this is virgin territory. Amongst other things, we looked at the history of skirting boards, but we came away more or less empty handed. Wikipedia even proved to be our most helpful source of information. That’s where we found the following:

‘Protection and decoration’ ‘A skirting board is a frame mounted at floor level against a wall which forms the transition between floor and wall. It generally protects the

It’s quite obvious that if we want to find out about 2020 trends in skirting boards (used in our case mainly in combination with soft floors), we have to look at the market. A survey shows that in recent years makers have become increasingly aware of the need for and the benefits of accessories. These are accessories in which skirting boards take up a prominent place. One of the main lessons was that nowadays there is hardly any material which is not suitable for making skirting boards. Gone are the days when all skirting boards were made of wood or a wood derivative. For instance, stainless steel and aluminium are making a comeback everywhere as are diverse synthetics. Remember, too, that all sizes are on offer. Height, length, and thickness can all help yield a colourful result. Shapes, too, are legion. For instance, we see flat i-shapes, rimmed and extruded L-shapes, and r-skirting boards where clearly a lot of attention has been paid to fitting convenience, even in places which are hard to reach. If the click system was a hit for the floor itself, we are now seeing the same with skirting boards. Click and it’s ready, something which obviously facilitates finishing as quickly and efficiently as possible. That is certainly true in big rooms, something which often leads towards project use. From the look of the skirting boards themselves we see that even with the skirting board it is all about achieving the ultimate individual home environment. Can you personalise your floor to the full nowadays? The same applies to the skirting board! Do you want your own decoration on the skirting board with highly personal images? No problem! You can do that literally in any colour or finish imaginable according to choice and with or without led lights.

Producers of profiles with integrated LED lights

LEDS CONTINUE TO ADVANCE FROM FUNCTIONAL TO DECORATIVE, THE OPTIONS ARE LEGION

Photo – Progress Profiles

LED lights have been advancing for many years and we’re not really surprised. LEDS simply have scores of assets which cover the entire spectrum from functional to decorative and do so in projects and on residential sites. Various producers saw the possibilities of LED lights a long time ago and that yielded scores of innovative solutions which also benefit parquet traders. Sometimes, it seems like the LED, an abbreviation for ‘light-emitting diode’, is a fairly recent invention. However, nothing could be further from the truth. Back in 1962, this electronic semi-conductor component, designed as a diode which emits light when there is a current flow in the current direction, literally saw the light of day. Although the LED served initially only as an indicator lamp and for signal transmission, technological refinements led to an ongoing increase in light production. By the end of the 1990s, LEDS were being produced which were suitable as a source of light for ordinary daily use. That LED was

20

Floor Forum International 112

thereby built into a small transparent casing a few millimetres in size, which also acts as a lens.

Attention for parquet traders The introduction of the LED in the parquet industry and related sectors had to wait, but the genie had been let out of the bottle several years earlier. The fact that its popularity in the flooring industry continued to grow should not surprise anyone. Not only does the LED have a clear functional asset, such as, for instance, integration into floor profiles so that thresholds become clearly more visible, but also the LED continues to surprise us decoratively. It has also caught the attention of parquet traders who don’t need to be child prodigies to apply these elements. For instance, amongst other things, we notice how creative this element is being used. We’ve noticed a good application of a German producer, which has come out with aluminium skirting boards with

LED lights and skirting boards in places where a strip of floor (vinyl, laminate, or parquet) is fitted. With this producer we have even seen aluminium skirting boards into which elements of Swarovski have been integrated. The fact that the LED is being taken seriously as a design element can be seen amongst other producers as well. For instance, Progress Profiles has taken the Gilberto Toneguzzi on board. This man has helped them to develop an integrated LED light, which can be used as a skirting board or can be applied along the edges of the ceiling.

Progress Profiles

The LED strip In all that we mustn’t forget to mention separately the possibilities of the LED strip. Indeed, those strips have various applications whereby you as a flooring professional can stylishly apply sources of light and/or accent lighting, both in private dwellings and in offices, hotels, restaurants, and shops. Furthermore, LEDS in strips can obviously be used for highlights. Is accent lighting or mood lighting enough? If so, 12V strips will suffice. By contrast, are you thinking in terms of main lights? In that case, there are 24V strips, which produce more light.

The most important effect that skirting boards with LED ducts achieve is indirect lighting of the rooms. Compared to point light sources, a completely different atmosphere is created in the room. In addition to the design function, there is often a better orientation and user guidance up to escape route security. This is possible, for example, with the aluminium skirting board 357 by Prinz. It provides an LED duct with horizontal light emission, which is closed by a translucent flap (LED diffuser). If necessary, the flap can be easily opened so that the LED strip is accessible at all times. The skirting boards can be placed on top or installed flush. Surface mounting is particularly suitable for solid walls in combination with comprehensive door frames as a side closure. Alternatively, the skirting boards can also be processed undercut using plasterboard. Depending on the thickness of the plasterboard (9.5 mm or 12.5 mm), the skirting boards are flush with the wall. LED stair nosing for design coverings The LED stair nosing 219 was specially developed for dryback floorings with a thickness of up to 3 mm. The covering is glued into the profile on the step so that only the 2 mm narrow edge can be seen from above. If required, the vertical profile leg can be covered with a design floor on block steps.

Subfloors: part 2

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE WITH A PVC FLOOR CIRCUMSTANCES DETERMINE THE BEST SUBFLOOR OPTION You are asked to fit a PVC floor. Do you want to fit this floor in line with best practices? If so, you can’t just do anything, certainly not if the job involves floor heating and/or cooling. And so, how do you choose the most suitable subfloor for this type of flooring? The best way to tackle this issue is to ask yourself some questions. For instance, what can you best use as a subfloor so that the surface isn’t vulnerable to impressions? Obviously, you also note that whatever you choose has to be hard, dry, flat, and stable. Indeed, the last thing you want is for the subfloor to have an effect on the top surface over time. It is absolutely essential to level the subfloor, even though there are various products on the market which make it unnecessary. You do this using a levelling agent to create a hard and flat floor. It’s best here to opt at once for a subfloor to provide insulation or sound insulation, and you will certainly choose the former if floor heating is present.

as a sound insulation underlayer (18dB). This underlayer is selected for glued parquets. Without drying or reticulation, Iso dB is ready-to-use and allows a fast implementation of surfaces thanks to the adhesives faces on each sides that allows an easier layer and avoids use of glue. This underlayer is compatible on heating and refreshing floor with the use of « Isojonction ».

Unifloor Jumpax® Subfloors Now With A Five-Year Guarantee

A number of options Obviously, there are various systems on the market and below we introduce you to several options. For instance, you can choose a (cork) rubber subfloor fitted with an adhesive layer, onto which you can stick the PVC floor directly. An asset here is that rubber has a levelling effect for a clean, flat, and smooth (concrete) floor. Another asset is that it’s also ideal in combination with floor heating. Obviously, you can also make it easier for yourself and opt for a floor in PVC where the furnishing is already glued onto a stable composite or HDF bearer with a click system and where the PVC has a durable protective layer as a finish. This avoids any fuss with adhesive, since the floors are fitted floating. Obviously, another possibility is to opt for PVC strips which are glued onto the substrate. Do not forget that levelling is always necessary.

Glued means less noise We have one more point to give you more help with your choice: Always remember that glued PVC floors are much quieter than floating floors. Moreover, glued floor feel a lot smoother. Obviously, the noise argument becomes more or less important depending on the type of site where you are going to work. If it’s in a flat, certainly where the client has neighbours below, glueing is your best option. Another benefit of glued PVC is also that it’s the best option if there is floor heating, certainly if laminate is the alternative, with its usually thicker structure.

Sanding machines: part 2

ROTARY DISC SANDERS ARE NOW MORE AND MORE VERSATILE WORKHORSES WITH INCREASING OPTIONS Eccentric or rotary disc sanders for parquet are becoming a more attractive option for your machinery year by year. In this article we examine machines with three or even four discs, which may or may not rotate in opposite directions. Various leading market players illustrate here how parquet floor fitters can get more out of sanding machines and how a number of models can do much more than just sandpaper wood roughly or finely. What exactly is a rotary or eccentric sanding machine? Generally speaking, you can say that it’s a tool with an operating handle, behind which the operator stands and sandpapers a floor without bending. It has a circular shaped flat sole with a springy layer to which sandpaper can be fitted. This sole is mounted with an eccentric on the axis of the motor to create a rapid rotating motion together with an eccentric motion. This makes the machine suitable for both rapid rough sanding and a finer finish.

Diverse motions In previous articles we have drawn a distinction between three types of motion, namely rotational sanding, eccentric sanding, or oscillation sanding, the latter with an occasionally repeated change of direction. We see combined rotational motions with several discs. We can reinforce the effect of the rotation (usually) by using three or even four discs rotating in different directions. Strictly speaking, that means rotation and oscillation. We already know what these machines can do. We can use them to prepare a substrate, sandpaper, finish, renovate lacquer, remove glue residue, or even renovate a terrace. However, we can deduce even more from the information which we have received.

Not only for wooden floors First of all, we note that all manufacturers strive constantly for greater efficiency. Moreover, we see that they think beyond just sandpapering wooden floors. For instance, sometimes these machines can also be used to grind or polish concrete floors or natural stone or floors even in oils, something which indicates an increasingly wider scope. What also stands out is how planing is done with an increasingly simple operation via soft start and variable revolutions per minute in combination with a powerful drive and new drive mechanisms to create a perfectly prepared floor surface. In addition, we can also mention a clear commitment to maximum convenience with these sanders. And so, more attention is being paid explicitly to increasingly easier travel and ergonomic thought is no longer a foreign concept. Moreover, various machines can be made heavier using extra weights. Yet there’s more; technology using several discs does not necessarily mean that you always have to work in that way since the drive can be switched on and off. There is still that eternal problem of dust. Designers have considered this, too, for instance, by providing a dust seal ring. Last but not least, something everyone is working on, it is so easy to facilitate cleaning after use.

Silane adhesives

READY FOR A HAPPY FUTURE SILANE ADHESIVES CAN RIGHTFULLY BE CALLED UNIVERSAL We’ve covered the benefits and drawbacks of silane adhesives a few times. The question which we put to producers this time is whether these adhesives are still advancing or whether they have reached their limit. We also consider where you can best use these adhesives and also venture to consider the question of whether and how they can now be used for floors like LVT, PVC, and vinyl.

What’s on the market ? Blanchon

Obviously, we start with wooden floors and their adhesives. How could we do otherwise? Here it is clear that an ideal parquet adhesive must meet several conditions. It must be able to cope as well as possible with the moisture sensitivity of this material, which is very prone to fluctuating levels of moisture in both the wood and the surroundings. Possibly the most important requirement for a parquet adhesive is that it strikes a perfect balance between diverse factors. The most important of those factors for a wooden floor is to allow hardness and elasticity to react perfectly to each other.

Various assets Silane adhesives, also identified as hybrid polymers, have various assets: flexibility, elasticity, and resistance (to cracks). In particular, the link between these elements distinguishes this product from the alternatives on the market. It thereby also becomes clear that these adhesives can be used on many other products than just wood. In terms of elasticity, few other adhesives can beat silane adhesives, according to producers. Indeed, these adhesives make it possible to follow dimensional movements of the wood perfectly. Another undeniable asset is that silane adhesives are adapted to all sorts of wood, even greasy or fibrous wood sorts such as bamboo. This obviously benefits parquet traders. Their stock gets considerably smaller because they don’t need as many types in stock. What about materials other than wood? An additional asset is that silane adhesives can be used for much more than just wood and the joints of parquet or their accessories. They are also used in the construction industry amongst other things for glueing glazing or glueing in a damp environment, and they can even be painted over. They are even used in the car industry where there are several technical applications for them.

Silane adhesives are universal Finally, to cut a long story short, you can call silane adhesives universal without batting an eyelid. Apart from the aforementioned assets, we also see, for instance, that there is no longer any need for a primer (except in very specific cases). As we’ve already suggested, they also make it possible to glue several materials, including floors with floor heating, anhydrite screeds, P3 levelling, and such like. Add to that the fact that makers also like to stress that these adhesives have little impact on both the user and the environment and that the site of use is operational shortly afterwards. You don’t need any more reasons to believe that silane adhesives will still enjoy outstanding success in the future

The Blanchon range comprises four products: two adhesives spread with a spatula, one adhesive for cordon glueing, and one ‘ship deck’ joint. All of them are in class A+. AB 2000 is a hybrid polymer adhesive which is ultra-effective in fully glueing solid parquet in wide widths of up to 200mm and for composite parquet up to 400mm, which is adapted to floors with floor heating. AB 1300 is also a hybrid polymer film. It is very effective for fully glueing solid parquet in wide widths of up to 130mm and composite parquet up to 260mm. AB 2000 and AB 1300 have an EC1R classification (GEV-EMICODE) and come in convenient packaging (a highly convenient 6kg aluminium bag). The adhesive for glueing in cordon is also a hybrid polymer adhesive and is supplied in aluminium sausages. It is usually applied with a gun. The ‘ship deck’ joint is a hybrid polymer mastic and is black in colour. It is designed specifically for joints between the parquet and the skirting boards and for ‘ship deck’ joints.

Chimiver Chimiver in the last few years has developped various types of glues including the sophisticated single component adhesive based on a silane-terminated prepolymer (MS technology). UNISIL one of these is not only highly recommended for gluing pre-finished wooden floor onto marble, grint, tiles, ceramic or marble-chip floor but also suitable for gluing wooden floor onto radiant floors and cooling system. UNISIL can also be used with several

other uses including the adhesion of thermal insulation panels (cork, expanded polyurethane, rock-woll) the adhesion of tiles on asbetos cement and chipboards and wood adhesion and building materials on metal substrates. Our adhesive can be used for other applications such as the adhering of heat and sound insulating panels (cork, rock-wool, expanded polyurethane, the adhering of tiles on asbetos cement and chipboards and the adhering of wood and building materials on to metal bases. These features together the EC1 and LEED certifications make us understand how this adhesive has multiple functions and applications making it a universal adhesive.

Thomsit Fitting parquet makes high demands of the performance of the floor fitter and the quality of the product used. For ready-for-fitting parquet BASF presents Thomsit P 675 Elast, with its strong quality and competitive price. By contrast, P 685 Elast Universal can be deployed more broadly and, amongst other things, is suitable for solid parquet. P 695 Elast Universal Strong is your master for all classes and is suitable for all sorts of parquet. These three glues all have the benefits of the FLEXTEC™ technology, which Thomsit itself has developed. These elastic glues absorb the movements of the parquet floor and that permanently reduces the tensile stress on the substrate. Moreover, they are strong and flexible and adhere to almost any substrate without the need for a primer. Apart from that, they also save you valuable drying time.

Preparing, grinding, and polishing concrete floors, Terrazzo, and other types of natural stone

SUITABLE EQUIPMENT PREVENTS SHODDY WORK SCORES OF REVOLUTIONARY DEVELOPMENTS ENSURE EVER GREATER EFFICIENCY

Photo – Husqvarna

The substrate onto which you want to fit a floor in wood, vinyl, LVT, PVC, laminate, or even carpet can take on different forms. How do you set about the task with a floor which consists of concrete, terrazzo, or even natural stone? We asked a number of leading suppliers of machines for the preparation of such floors how they tackle this in practice.

28

Floor Forum International 112

Of all the ‘bases’ which there are, the vast majority of them are concrete. If you are faced with an existing floor in concrete and you want to prepare it for fitting a wooden floor or a floor in something like PVC, laminate, or vinyl, there are various factors to consider. With a wooden floor and even various other types of floors, there’s one thing which you really mustn’t forget before you tackle the concrete,

terrazzo, or natural stone. Make absolutely sure that you let the wood acclimatise to the future conditions of the room where the floor will be fitted. Certainly with wood, it is best to put it ready for use on site for at least two days so that it can adapt to the humidity and room temperature.

Various solutions In this article you will note that various producers offer various solutions for preparing a concrete floor and similar floors. That’s not surprising because each operation requires different equipment. Certainly when it comes to finding the right professional machine, it’s not a bad idea to consult at least one vendor before you start. The preparation, grinding and polishing concrete floors, and repairing and polishing terrazzo and other natural stone are not jobs which you can finish at once. And so, before you make a purchase, consider the benefits of your preferred machines. Amongst other things, consider what the drive looks like and whether or not it could be operated by remote control. Check how dust is processed, find out how easy the transport is and whether or not a slightly smaller model might be better for you, ask which tool system is used (diamond?), and be sure to consider how you assemble it. You don’t want to waste any time on the site after discovering that you need two university degrees for the assembly. For that matter, all at the same time, you can check how you should tackle any required chemical pre-treatment for the floor.

Attractive options If we examine a number of attractive options more closely, we notice that some manufacturers turn out some very striking items. For instance, Husqvarna de Dual Drive Technology™ has a licensed design of two separate motors for the planetary head and grinding discs which work independently of each other. This ensures an almost unlimited number of setting combinations and excellent process management. Moreover, the planetary head and the grinding discs can both be set in the same rotation direction. The result: extremely high productivity and a smoother finish. It is also advisable to take care in the area of avoiding dust. At all events, find out how professionals tackle this problem and how efficient each system on a site is. Don’t forget that it’s not just purely a question of obtaining the highest possible output, but also that it is best to be able to work in a healthy atmosphere as well as having a clean floor.

The machines come in three different sizes and are fitted with several options. The new planetary range of floor grinders starts with the compact PG 540. This machine is really easy to transport, load, and unload because it is fitted with a dismountable motor unit so that the machine can be loaded in two parts. This is the perfect solution for smaller jobs and it offers exceptional mobility. Then there is the versatile PG 690, which is also available with remote control (PG 690RC). The star of the show is the PG 830/PG830RC, the biggest and most powerful model. The PG 830 RC has a remote control and motorised control for maximum performance. Finally, the range is complemented with PG 830 S with a single drive mechanism, which makes it a simple and straightforward and affordable ‘work horse’. The new range is equipped with the renowned Dual Drive Technology™. This is a licensed design with two separate motors whereby the planetary head and grinding heads work independently of each other. This unique function ensures an almost unlimited number of settings and combinations and excellent process management. The new series stands out for its more powerful motor options, which pave the way for even greater productivity. The top machines PG 830 and PG 830 RC have a 15 kW/20pk motor, to give up to 36% more power than with previous models. Other interesting features include the fully sealed grinding head, the electric receptacles, and Dual Drive transmission. This means that the most critical components are protected from dust and dirt. Furthermore, the new and compact design means a better field of vision during work. Moreover, the adjustable handles ensure optimal user ergonomics. Other interesting details include optional LED lights, good suspension, big wheels for easy transport, and a newly designed control panel. Husqvarna Fleet Services Maintain complete control over your machinery. For each machine you can see the length of use and the maintenance planning via our very latest Husqvarna Fleet services app. This is now available on all floor grinding machines.

We also made enquiries about fitting and exchanging diamond tools quickly and efficiently. Here, too, find out how this works. Will a rapid tap with a small hammer be enough to ensure secure fastening? Is it easy to remove the tools again? Remember here that it’s about being as productive as possible and there’s nothing more annoying than wasting time solving problems with damaged screw heads or searching for screws which are lying around.

A specialist Husqvarna launches a new series of floor grinding machines In November 2020, the Swedish company Husqvarna is launching a brand new range of floor grinders. Specifically, this involves no fewer than eight new floor grinders. Producer Husqvarna Construction Products is aiming to reinforce its position on the global market in this segment. End users have taken centre stage in the development of this new range because the company is aiming to offer them a more ingenious way of working. The key concepts are the redefining of performances, reliability, and user-friendliness.

Producers of multilayer floors

SUCCESS DUE TO SEVERAL FACTORS MULTILAYER STRUCTURE CREATES MAXIMUM SHAPE STABILITY In previous editions we have discussed on more than one occasion the constantly growing popularity of multilayer wooden floors. Initially, this product, which was seen mainly as a cheap alternative to solid parquet or wooden floors, had an image problem as it emerged that not all the products were of consistent quality. That problem now seems to be a thing of the past, but the general rule still applies: Work with a trustworthy manufacturer who can present some verifiable references. How do you identify good multilayer parquet? Before we answer that question, we need to define precisely what we mean. The BBRI defines multilayer parquet briefly as follows: Multilayer parquet is a wooden flooring with strips of more than one layer (editor’s note: mainly two or three layers). You thereby have a solid wooden wearing surface on a panel carrier and these floors are usually finished and ready for fitting. With a multilayer parquet floor, the top layer (noble wood) is at least 2.5mm thick, so it stands out at once from a wooden veneer floor, which is always less than 2.5mm thick.

Take advantage of hygroscopic material wood The big advantage of multilayer parquet is that it benefits from the fact that wood is a hygroscopic material i.e. it adapts its shape to changing temperatures and fluctuations in humidity. Traditional solid wood floors may start to curve or warp over time as a result of ongoing shrinking and swelling, and that’s where multilayer parquet offers an alternative. The fact is that a good multilayer floor is designed in such a way as to counter the natural movement of wood as much as possible. In all this, don’t forget what the structural system of multilayer parquet floors look like. With a two-layer structure, the top layer is glued onto a bearer, often multiplex, a structure of several layers of veneer wood glued crosswise. This provides a perfectly stable parquet floor. With three-layer parquet, a bearer construction is provided under the hardwood of the top layer, a stable HDF intermediate layer for instance, with a counter veneer of simple spruce wood underneath.

Ask questions You can ask some questions to find out which manufacturer has the best products for you. In this way, amongst other things, you can find out how the sound development is reduced fully or how the floor responds to impressions and how the parquet reacts in combination with floor heating. Obviously, you also want to know where the used wood comes from, certainly for the top layer, and whether or not this wood has been extracted according to the rules of the trade. It is also worth asking which glueing methods have been used and with what products. At all events, remember that the thickest top layer may not necessarily be the best one for you. In particular, your absolute priority must be to consider the thickness which you need. This can be vitally important,

30

especially for renovation. With alterations, parquet is often fitted onto an existing floor and in that case it is essential that differences in height do not become too great.

engineered, in 2 layers of better quality. The birch plywood we are using provides better stability thanks to its multi-layers cross-ply structure. It is well known as being the most professional floor especially by the installation’s companies. Parquet Design sells more finished flooring compared to rough floors but both are possible. We offer several species (Oak, Acacia, ash, Walnut, Iroko, Jatoba, Merbau, Teak, Wengé…), in several dimensions (thickness x width in mm): 12 / 90-145-180, 16 / 90-180-220, 20 / 180-295. Loft Pro parquets are available in monoblades, Chevron, Herringbone or panels like Versailles style. Since 20 years, Design Parquet become parquet flooring expert and brings daily technical and aesthetic solutions to its customers from a wide range of species, colours, formats.

ESTAparket At ESTAparket we produce parquet both with engineered 3-layer and multilayer construction. In both cases we have the option to produce the parquet with standard 3,2 mm wear layer or with custom 6 mm wear layer. The multilayer parquet in our production is made using high quality birch plywood and is with tongue and groove joint. This is almost always a custom product and can be in thickness from 11 mm up to 24 mm, depending on the installation and project. 3-layer construction is more acceptable for climate changes, but less prone to fail critically when indoor climate parameters are not met. The plywood multilayer construction is more stable, but can fail critically if certain thresholds are passed. In most cases the 3-layer parquet construction is used as this is cheaper, lighter and being with click system, also easier to install. Regardless of the parquet construction we can finish the floor in any design from our collection.

MEISTER Wood is a valuable material which should be treated responsibly and carefully. That‘s why MEISTER parquet floors do not consist of solid wood, but of three layers. The middle is a stable HDF layer above a veneer in spruce and the top layer (2.5mm) is in noble wood. This structure yields extra benefits. For instance, MEISTER multilayer parquet is considerably more stable in shape than solid parquet, so it doesn‘t warp in the heat or under fluctuating humidity. It reacts much better to mechanical pressure than a parquet floor with a standard middle layer in spruce. MEISTER parquet reduces sound development

with a very simple principle: more mass means less vibration. Using an HDF middle layer increases the weight of the plank by about 50%. That results in less vibration, better

acoustics, and more peace and quiet.

Maintenance and cleaning products for floors in vinyl, LVT, and PVC

FITTING FOLLOW-UP CREATES ADDED VALUE PROFESSIONAL TIPS FOR CLEANING AND MAINTAINING VINYL, PVC, AND LVT

Photo – DevoNatural®

We’ve already told you that maintenance and cleaning products can give you potentially lucrative supplementary income. Certainly when it comes to vinyl, PVC, and LVT, there is business to be done by taking responsibility not only for fitting the floor, but also giving clients the right cleaning and maintenance tips. This means not only pointing out the right products for daily cleaning, but also thinking ahead into the future so that users can enjoy immaculate looking floors for many years. Before we continue, it is advisable to clarify a few terms. Cleaning and maintenance is more comprehensive than you might initially think and, in fact, you should consider a ‘cleaning, grooming, and maintenance’ method. The most self-explanatory of those elements is cleaning, which simply means removing all sorts of dirt. Grooming goes further and includes protective measures or repairing minor damage. The real upkeep (called maintenance) means keeping your floor in the very best condition. This means feeding your vinyl, PVC, or LVT floor with certain elements at regular intervals, as is the case with an oiled wooden floor, so that the floor still looks new.

34

Floor Forum International 112

Various steps First of all, let’s consider the most normal phase, namely cleaning. Here you can advise clients that it is good to remove sand and dust several times a week using a vacuum cleaner or duster. It is certainly best to remove sand as soon as possible because sand can cause scratches or marks on the floor. Mopping is less necessary (once a week or every two weeks will suffice), but it is best to use a product suited to the floor. A useful tip is that it is possible to avoid a lot of dirt by providing entry mats for the entrances. In turn, those mats should be cleaned regularly. The next step is grooming, which we could also call periodic maintenance. Over time, the floor should be cleaned thoroughly, certainly if it has texture. It is best to do this quarterly or every six months. Here, too, you should make sure you recommend suitable products so that the floor is not damaged. This removes stubborn dirt, making it possible to mop again with a daily cleaner. If you go a step further, you have to give the floor an extra protective layer in order to extend its lifespan. You also need very specific

treatment agents for stains. Paint, glue, or shoe marks, for instance, should be tackled with the correct removal agent. When stains are removed, clients will possibly notice a difference in gloss. Here you should point out that this will diminish and even disappear completely via treatment with water and by deploying regular cleaning sessions.

Feed the floor What you can also tell clients is that some floors need to be ‘fed’. This feeding is particularly important with highly porous floors. PVC is hardly porous at all, so there really isn’t a problem. However, there is a problem with vinyl, which is often highly absorbent. This means a maintenance treatment should be carried out. You can compare this with the pore filler of wooden floors.

What’s on the market ? Blanchon Blanchon has various products for cleaning vinyl, LVT, and PVC floors. They offer a full range for glazed, oiled, and polished parquet floors. This range is designed for specialist parquet traders, cleaning companies, and end clients. First of all, there are two metallisers, namely the renovation products Métallisant Satiné (for satin or glossy parquet) and Métallisant Métamat (for matt parquet floors). These metallisers are designed specifically for renovation since they also fill small cracks and freshen up the look of the glazed floors. Furthermore, they also have a detergent, namely Lisabril®. This product is used diluted and complements both metallisers perfectly. Due to its new formula, this product is ideal for large surfaces (e.g. restaurants, public spaces, classrooms, and parquet sports floors). Finally, there is another powerful detergent, namely ‘Décapant Dégraissant’ (new name for the cleaning agent ‘Suractivé’). This product is ideal for preparing the metallisation with no risk of damage to the glazing.

Producers of Hungarian point and herringbone parquet (solid and multilayer)

EXPERTISE IS MASTERY SPECIAL DESIGNS ARE POPULAR BOTH IN SOLID WOOD AND IN ALTERNATIVES Interior fashions are clearly veering towards anything which is special and requires more expertise. We see the same trend in flooring where interest in special designs has grown noticeably. Two of those special designs spring particularly to mind, namely herringbone design and Hungarian point.

What’s on the market ? Chêne de l’est

It is important to note that this trend should be split into two parts. On the one hand, there is the ‘real’ work, which involves solid wood (in our parts of the world oak still clearly leads the field) and enables parquet floor fitters to show off their expertise to the full. On the other hand, there are scores of alternatives in various forms e.g. multilayer with tongue and groove, laminate with a click system, a PVC design, etc. The range in those alternatives is quasi infinite. The first question to ask yourself might seem rather unexpected. When a layperson looks at a floor in herringbone and then at one in Hungarian point, he or she will probably look at you in amazement and react as follows: ‘They really do look like each other.’ And so, how do you explain the difference to him or her?

The sergeant strip You can start by admitting that Hungarian point certainly does closely resemble a herringbone (parquet) floor. Yet for some reason or other, it has that extra touch of elegance and style as compared to herringbone so that it suits both classic and modern interiors. There is a similarity which you can mention. Just as with a herringbone floor, Hungarian point is fitted in a specific pattern using shorter planks. The difference is that with a Hungarian point floor, all planks are fitted at angles of 45 or 60°. This creates the iconic pattern which gives this floor its name. Due to this specific exterior, people sometimes call Hungarian point ‘sergeant strip’, certainly in the Netherlands. Moreover, don’t forget to say that with Hungarian point, the top part of the plank always joins with the next plank. In combination with diagonally sawn ends, this creates more rigid lines than with a herringbone floor. Show the client the grooves and lines, and then you can prove that there is a clear difference. For instance, herringbone floor planks are fitted stepwise. In other words, the floorboards are fitted in a herringbone pattern at angles of 90°, so the grooves are different to those of a Hungarian point floor.

The market has plenty to offer If you want to know what’s on offer as regards (alternatives to) solid Hungarian and herringbone parquet, you will certainly find extra information amongst the products of the manufacturers named below. This gives you an idea of whether or not there is still a left or right fitting or whether al planks are universal. You will notice that there are increasingly infinite alternatives to solid wood on the market, you can find out what sizes are on offer or what the biggest and smallest sizes are, and what is on offer. At the same time, this gives you ideas about the use of wood and other materials, shows you which multilayer alternatives are available, and familiarises you with special finish methods.

36

These patterns are always in very high demand. There is nothing like a Herringbone or Chevron pattern to bring a floor to life. Of course, they are part of the basic training of the parquet layer. Especially for Chevron pattern, you need to be experienced. For the latter, start laying in the centre of the room, according to the floor plan, over a length of at least 3.00 m, or even over the entire length of the room in two lines (left and right planks), first lay the floor in white (without glue), then glue it down. Continue laying, in two lines (left and right planks), the planks must match perfectly. We offer the Herringbone and Chevron patterns in engineered oak TOP 2.7, TOP 3.3, TOP 4, TOP 6 and in solid oak 14 and 21 mm in widths from 70 to 110 mm. The lengths can be between 400 and 800 mm. In all the finishes of our ranges from the most classic to the most structured. Everything is possible. Discover all our possibilities on www.chenedelest.com

Design Parquet A classic of French traditional floor parquet, as before dedicated to the Haussmanian houses, the chevron parquet is now most popular. The fixed long strips are laid with an angle of 45° or 38° or other according to the customers needs. The Herringbone pattern, is an another style of laying which offers elegant lines. The strips of similar dimensions are laid with

an angle of 90 °. Specialist of parquet on request, Design Parquet proposes 1000 parquets in solid and engineered oak for Chevron and Herringbone installation. We present these two types of installation on all our range of Oak (range of colors : white, grey, brown, or natural), in different grades, sizes and finishings in laying either glued, nailed or floating. The installation of this design of parquets needs knowledge. It’s very important to respect the angle so as no to have any difference at the end of the room. For a more pleasant aspect, think about asking for a technical layout.

ESTAparket Herringbone pattern has become a sort of a symbol to differentiate yourself or to make a statement. It is a more exclusive product, that results in more expressional interior than nowadays the quite common 1-strip floor. The correct execution for the perfect looking herringbone floor requires planning from the architect and later

a skilled installer to realize the installation correctly. At ESTAparket the parquet in herringbone pattern is made mostly using Oak and Ash, but we are ready to realize the floor from exotic wood species such as Merbau or Walnut as well. In our selection the herringbone pattern is in standard width 100 mm or 150 mm, but also wider boards are possible. For the 100 mm size we use in standard birch plywood construction, but the wider boards are in 3-layer engineered construction. The last one can be with click connection for use in floating installations. 100 mm Herrinbone pattern is available from our stock collection with no minimum limit for the order quantity. Hungarian point is not in our standard selection, but we can offer this on request.

same colour or the matt lacquered herringbone floorings with the elegant PS 300 planks (1187 x 142 mm). This enables the customer to combine different parquet formats in one and the same colour. Besides the visual aspect, ease of installation was also taken into account. Thanks to the patented Unizip click system, it's no longer necessary to divide the flooring into A and B planks. In future, this parquet flooring will be able to be laid with one type of plank. For this customer, this increases the laying speed and reduces sawing waste.

Q-Floor The Q-Bone Collection by Q-Floor Herringbone parquet is a popular fitting pattern which was found mainly in castles, cloisters, and mansions a few centuries ago. In recent years, this type of parquet has come back into fashion and is making its way into the interior of both traditional and modern homes. And so, Q-Floor has set up the ‘Q-Bone’ Collection, which is available in various sizes (70-90-150mm ), qualities (Prime-Bis-Rustic A, and Rustic AB), and finishes. In the past, this fitting pattern was only for solid parquet floors, but today the range is much wider. For example, we have opted for multilayer parquet with a multiplex bearer and a 4mm top layer. This gives the best of both worlds: the unique warmth and look of wood and all the benefits of a multiplex. The Q-Bone collection can also be fitted on floor heating with no problem at all.

Zenon Zenon was formed by Zenon Zielke in 2001 in Northern Poland and now being managed by James Zielke. The company has grown from a small family manufacturing business into an international producer and supplier. It employs local well trained workers and operates state-of-the-art machinery. Amongst other things, Zenon is known for its herringbone and Hungarian point, but also for multilayer versions which are suitable for floor heating. The company notes that these patterns are still in fashion, so they offer herringbone and Hungarian point in various colours with something for everyone’s taste. As for wood sorts, they recommend a Baltic birch multiplex bearer with a top layer in oak. In making these special patterns, Zenon stresses utter precision, certainly because this is about producing sections which are smaller than normal and therefore require more time. They also pay extra attention to finishing the corners with utter precision. The smallest size of multilayer on offer is 15 x 130 x 650mm, the biggest 20 x 300 x 3000mm.

Filler and repair kits

IMPERFECTIONS ARE LESS AND LESS ‘A THING’ PRODUCERS ARE COMMITTED TO ECOLOGY, SHORTER DRYING TIMES, AND EASY FINISH putty or more particularly to wood paste, which can be used to tackle small imperfections such as nail holes. There are also mastics which are ready for use or which are offered in two components and mixed at the time of use. The repair kits are also a classic. Here the sawdust from the wood is added, usually also to repair minor shortcomings. Acrylate and polyacrylate are also used, which can also cope with joints and thresholds with other floors and which are suitable for this purpose due their great elasticity. There is also the additional asset of being suitable for lacquering and oiling. Another product on the market is repair wax, which is on offer in the shape of wax rods in both solid and malleable form. With malleable rods, the repair is a so called cold repair with wax being pressed into the opening. Wax in solid form is subsequently melted with a melting pistol above the damage.

Perfect wood is scarce. However, despite an unmistakable trend towards a natural look in the interior, clients very often want their parquet or wood to be flawless, certainly if they intend to fit in on the floor. In other words, people do not want any holes in the wood (nail holes or gnarls) or any splits or cracks or imperfections or such like. In this article on fillers and repair kits we consider the various sorts of resources available on the market and what they can cope with. We asked several producers about the drying times of their products, which colours they offer, whether their fillers and repair kits can be lacquered over, and whether or not they can be oiled and/or coloured.

Diverse technical solutions The first thing we learnt was that there are several technical solutions on the market at present. For instance, some professionals refer to

40

Floor Forum International 112

In addition, we also mention a special repair kit for vinyl floors. This deploys a welding product and it can be polished fine once it has set.

The client wants it, the market has it If we consider the progress, it is remarkable how much the respective drying times have progressed. In some cases, depending on the product, it is only a question of minutes and no longer hours before the product has set. That relates to another trend; quite a lot of products can be covered by just about any possible finish. This immediately answers our question about the possibility of a covering layer or oiling. It seems that this is no longer really an issue. Moreover, as regards the colours on offer, the range is getting bigger all the time and is growing under the motto ‘the client wants it, the market has it’. Finally, we note that what is on offer is almost always made according to very strict environmental standards and every effort is made to offer products which are both water-based and completely odourless. Moreover, producers aim to have as little impact on the environment as possible without in any way forgetting the health of the user.

Some specialists Blanchon Blanchon has various products to repair parquet floors. They cover the entire spectrum. For instance, they have binding agents which should be mixed with sawdust from the parquet floor. They have two such kits, namely Wood Filler (‘Mastic à Bois), a fixture on the market for over 20 years, and Pro Filler, which is in the Aqua Pro range. Then there are mastics which are ready for use or in two components and are mixed at the time of use. There is Wood Mastic (‘Mastic Bois’; in a tube and ready for use), Blanchon Mastic Wood Powder (‘Mastic Bois Poudre Blanchon’; powder to be mixed with water at the time of use), or there is the 2-component Wood Mastic Polyester (‘Mastic Bois Polyester’; this should also be mixed at the time of use). During the laying of an untreated parquet or the renovation of a wooden floor, the first finishing step is the filling of fissures between boards and wooden pores. Tover offers two fillers suitable for this operation: the first one is solvent-based with low smell: Lega Stucco RSA and the second, result of the research for innovating environment friendly products, is water-based Idrostucco RS30. Both must be mixed with wooden dust and applied with a spatula. A sole application is enough to perfectly fill cracks as they do not shrink and have excellent filling properties. They are over-coatable both with water-based and solvent-based lacquers.

Producers of oil which can be lacquered

AN OIL AND LACQUER FINISH IS NOW IN FASHION CAN YOU COMBINE THE BEAUTY OF OIL WITH THE SHIELD OF LACQUER? YES, YOU CAN! Water and fire are not always incompatible The solution is to grind away the oil or hard wax oil. Once the wood is ‘bare’ again, you can apply lacquer. As you have already guessed, this is where the coloured or colourless oil to be lacquered makes its appearance. It is generally advisable not only to choose the colour of the oil carefully (there are now lots of colours on the market), but also to apply two coats of lacquer to the floor. The result is that clients benefit not only from the decorative look of oil, but also from the protection and low maintenance of lacquer. In all this, the thing to remember is that coloured (or colourless) oil which can be lacquered and lacquer should always be applied together. Producers also advise floor fitters to inform themselves properly in advance about the planned work and to use a single brush. This is so that not only will the oil look nice, but also you can remove any impurities from the surface.

Relatively modest cost price

Photo – Pallmann

The key question is still what all this should cost. You would think that the use of oil to be lacquered followed by the lacquer itself would be a costly, but apparently that is not the case. A spokesperson comments: ‘The financial cost of this system is relatively modest. With other systems you also have to go over the floor several times for a good result. Even six times may be necessary on occasions, so that obviously means a higher price than with oil and lacquer together. Two coats of oil are seldom necessary with the system of (coloured) oil and a glazer. And so, one coat is enough, and once that coat has been rubbed in, two coats of glazer on top will suffice. And so, generally, you can say that you get a sound and attractive finish with three and occasionally four coats. This keeps the price down and means that this product does enjoy considerable success.’

What’s on the market ? The following question arises from time to time, certainly with renovation work: Can I apply lacquer to an oil floor to combine the benefits of both finishes? We have to give a measured answer. You can’t simply apply lacquer to an oil floor just like that. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t apply any lacquer at all to an oiled surface. It is perfectly possible provided that you follow certain rules. Why is it not possible to apply lacquer to an oiled wooden floor under all conditions? The answer to that question lies in the properties of both products. On the one hand you have oil, which obviously has an oil base, and on the other hand there’s lacquer, which is usually waterborne. Combining a greasy base with a waterborne lacquer doesn’t work because oil and water repel each other. And so, you cannot apply any lacquer directly to any oiled wooden floor. For that matter the same goes for hard wax oil, which has a sealant wax layer onto which a waterborne lacquer will not ‘grip’.

Blanchon

Blanchon has various oils which can be varnished over. Of those products it is mainly their Solid’Oil™ which stands out. Indeed, for

many years now, this product has offered remarkable solutions which are greatly appreciated by parquet traders. In the meantime, the product has also earned scores of prestigious references, such as from various Gant boutiques (men’s fashion). Lots of parquet traders opt to apply tinted oil both due to the easy application and for the beauty and depth of the applied colour. Furthermore, it is also the case that many clients prefer to maintain glazed parquet than oiled parquet, even if the maintenance for household use is very quick and easy. Their glazers for this type of system are all water-based. The entire range of 2-component products is suitable, with a preference for ‘Intensive®’, which, with six basic shades and a minimal effect on the tonality of the bearer, has some strong assets. The RIGO Verffabriek master paint makers sought a way to preserve the untreated appearance of floors and surfaces. The result is SKYLT ORIGINAL, an invisible varnish for pure wood enthusiasts. SKYLT can be combined with SKYLT Undercoat Oil 2K. Using this duo, you can create the appearance of an oiled floor with the strength and maintenance of a varnish. With SKYLT Undercoat Oil 2K, you can stain wooden surfaces and then apply an invisible topcoat with SKYLT. As SKYLT varnish is truly invisible, the wood retains its natural appearance. You’re free to vary with colour shades thanks to SKYLT Undercoat Oil. When you opt for the appearance of an oiled floor, but for the convenience of a parquet varnish, choose SKYLT Undercoat Oil 2K. The oil is available in three different bases: Clear, White and Black. It can be tinted with separate colour pigments and can be coated with SKYLT directly after drying. Floors are easy to maintain after being finished with SKYLT.

IS ITALY RECOVERING FASTER THAN EXPECTED AFTER CORONA? HOPEFUL SIGNS INDICATE BETTER OUTPUT IN INDUSTRY Conte II government: more moderate To refresh your memory, those elections in 2018 resulted in a victory for the left-wing protest party Five Star Movement and the extreme right-wing party Lega, whilst the parties of the former premiers Renzi (PD) and Berlusconi (Forza) lost heavily. After long talks, the Five Star Movement and Lega agreed on a programme and a team of ministers, but a new impasse arose when President Sergio Mattarella (in power since early in 2015) refused to appoint the candidate finance minister. Once a different minister had been appointed, it was Lega leader Salvini’s turn to throw a spanner in the works. He tabled a motion of no confidence in the cabinet and called for new elections, whilst premier Conte resigned. Yet there were no new elections because the Five Star Movement formed a new government with its ‘sworn enemy’ PD. Conte remained premier in the new government.

Italy after corona

Even without corona, Italy, the third biggest economy in the European Union, was already a country with its own laws and ways of doing business. At the start of the corona crisis, after laborious talks to form a government, ‘the boot of Europe’ faced the highest number of confirmed infections outside Asia. This was compounded by the fact that the biggest breeding ground for the virus originated in the Northern Italian region of Lombardy, so the major industrial city of Milan was badly affected. What’s the situation like now, especially economically, with this country which was more severely affected by the outbreak of the corona virus early in March 2020 than any other country in the European Union and where the Italian premier Giuseppe Conte declared code red for the whole of Italy as early as 9 March? Is the recovery proving to be just as much of an ordeal as the lengthy cabinet formation in Belgium after the parliamentary elections of 4 March 2018?

Visit www.floor-forum.com

What are the expectations after the corona pandemic in this big country (over 300,000km²) with borders of 740km with Switzerland, 488km with France, 430km with Austria, and 232km with Slovenia? The Conte II government hopes to be more sympathetic towards the EU, implement a less strict immigration policy, and invest more money in the welfare state. Obviously, the question now is whether or not they can succeed in a country where it has traditionally been difficult to do business with the government, but where the corporate culture of the national enterprises is generally progressing healthily. What is certain is that the corona virus has had a considerable economic impact in Italy, although the latest figures are better than was initially feared. The Italian ministry of finance expects an economic decline this year of at least 8%, after the International Monetary Funds (IMF) had forecast a decline of over 9% and investment bank Goldman Sachs even put that figure as high as 11.6%, so there have been some hopeful signs in the third quarter of 2020.

GDP not at pre-corona level until in 2022 ‘In the third quarter of the year, the Italian economy recovered more strongly than expected after one of the hardest lockdowns in Europe,’ said finance minister Roberto Gualtieri early in August. Gualtieri said that Italy’s output will grow more than the expected 9.5%, which the government has recorded in the most recent financial plan. He made that pronouncement during an interview at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio in Northern Italy, but he also added that the gross domestic product would not return to its pre-corona level until in 2022. Gualtieri continued, ‘The emergency measures which we have taken were designed to support the production system, employment opportunities, and incomes. They were decisive in restarting the Italian economy, as is now happening.’

IMPERTEK The new range of Balance Pro is a summary of all the features of the supports for raised floorings: from wood to ceramic, from natural stone to decking, every material can be easily laid. To give an example, the new Rail Heads represent a further step in the evolution of the underlaying structure of raised floors: their self-levelling movement make easier and faster the installation of the joists, automatically correcting the different levels of slope; moreover their structure allows a quick and safe coupling to the joists, creating a real sub-system which will make the floor a single body. The versatility of this system, combined with the unrivalled variety of our offer, is an important weapon to the conquest of markets that already know the advantages of raised floors, therefore harder: it is the case of France and Belgium markets, where the creation of an agent network is allowing to organise us as an even more international company, taking up the continuous innovation and reliability challenge to which leading companies must respond. +39 (0) 421 322 525 - info@impertek.com - www.impertek.com

RENZO BORGONOVO AND FIGLI DI NANDO TRABATTONI (FNT)

Mr. Matteo Trabattoni of FNT Srl (left) and Mr. Luca Borgonovo of Renzo Borgonovo (right)

The companies Renzo Borgonovo and Figli di Nando Trabattoni (FNT) both operate since the 1950s/60s and have, since then, come a long way, earning, project after project, a valuable know-how in the sector of wood and wood-derivate embossing. The hot embossing process, done with a heated rotative press manages to replicate on wood a wide range of finishing patterns, starting from the widely demanded old-wood looks to the more modern designs and geometric drawings. Renzo Borgonovo and FNT are, hands down, the leaders in this niche sector, and have, through research and development projects, always offered to their clients up to date and even precursor technologies and pattern designs. The two companies, which have been in tight partnership since their birth, count together around 40 employees: competent workers widely appreciated for their customer care and attention to details. Exporting world-wide, there is no market too far to be reached. +39 (0) 362 90 13 47 - info@borgonovo.com - www.borgonovo.com +39 (0) 31 621 303 - rollers@trabattonistampi.com - www.trabattonistampi.com
