ALTERNATIVES TO WOOD ARE ATTRACTIVE FOR PROFESSIONALS DUE TO THE GREATER COMPLEXITY IN THE FITTING

For some time now, our articles have regularly covered special fitting patterns. We’ve already covered herringbone, but now we’re considering its equally fascinating (quasi) twin brother, namely Hungarian point. You know all about the wood patterns by now, so this article concentrates on versions in different types of materials, namely laminate, PVC, vinyl, and LVT.

Obviously, these alternatives to wood yield the same patterns as the wooden historical model. This means that with herringbone and Hungarian point we’re talking about similar, yet different patterns.

Related design floors

The difference lies mainly in the fitting method. The design floor also shows a sort of herringbone design with Hungarian point, but is fitted completely differently. Indeed, with Hungarian point the planks are laid at an angle of 45 or 60 degrees to create a pattern which stands out for its straight joint and is therefore also sometimes referred to as ‘sergeant stripes’. With herringbone laminate, the planks are fitted against each other at an angle of 90 degrees. The difference? Hungarian point creates a clearly more tranquil and rigid floor, whilst with herringbone it’s more about a timeless and tasteful look in the room. Don’t forget, too, that with Hungarian point it is possible to vary the angle at which the planks are fitted.

What are the possible reasons for not choosing the original in wood? The price will certainly head that list, but there’s more to it than that. Laminate, PVC, and such like have now developed to such an extent that there is now less difference in the appearance. Moreover, a design like Hungarian point has the advantage that it can be fitted in virtually any room, partly because the planks can be fitted at different angles. For instance, smaller angles are ideal for making smaller rooms look bigger.

For some other advantages as compared to wood we choose PVC specifically: - Less sensitive than wood to water and damp. Due to their composition, PVC floors are even suitable for bathrooms and kitchens. - Impact sounds make more noise on wooden floors than on PVC. PVC floors are generally more silent and are therefore recommended for places such as upstairs and flats. - The constant advances in technology mean patterns are getting more lifelike.

For projects too

What also stands out particularly is that these ‘alternative’ floor materials provide much greater scope in types of fitting. Whilst in the past Hungarian point was a floor for stately mansions, for instance, nowadays it is fitted in just about any room. That includes commercial areas such as shopping centres or offices. The advantage is that you

are free to deviate from the traditional wood imitation, but there is a choice of a virtually endless number of colours. Two other benefits not to be scorned: It’s easy to combine laminate and related products with floor heating and the wood alternatives are generally easier to maintain.

Professional fitting desirable

The trend of fitting these floors in alternatives to wood can certainly benefit professionals. Whilst traditional laminate and even PVC or LVT tiles are something which the average handyperson can manage, Hungarian point in laminate, PVC, vinyl, or LVT is considerably more difficult. The reason for that is obvious: With such a pattern the smallest mistake catches the eye relentlessly due to the visible inaccuracies. Another thing to remember when fitting both herringbone and Hungarian point: Fitting a joint is certainly a possible option; it depends on your choice (and the client’s).
