Special Combined lacquer and oil finishes: how do we do this and who has these products?

Can you apply a lacquer finish to an oil-based product? The answer to this question is quite simple: Yes, you can. We should add here that you do need to take care and pay particular attention to the preliminary sanding. Therefore, this is more or less a job for the real expert.

You might already have guessed that sanding is essential for a perfect end result with such an application. The fact is that sanding is particularly important if you opt for a coloured version of an oil-based primer. It is advisable to start with some rough sanding with a belt sander and an edge sander. You do this to remove old finish coats, unevenness, and damage.

Let’s explain more closely why you can’t treat an oiled floor with a lacquer without the necessary preparation. Consider on the one hand the properties of oil and the properties of lacquer on the other. Oil, as the name implies, has an oil base, whilst lacquer usually possesses a water base. As all wood specialists know, it’s not so easy to combine a greasy base with a waterborne lacquer, simply because oil and water repel each other. And so, never apply a lacquer directly to an oiled wooden floor and remember the sanding tip given above. The same also applies to hard wax oil. Indeed, hard wax oil has a seal layer of wax onto which the waterborne lacquer cannot ‘grip’.

Sanding

Generally speaking, wooden floors are then sanded up to and including grain P 100. After sanding the floor and removing all the dust, you then apply the oil-based primer with a buffing machine fitted with a pad. This makes it easy to apply the primer very rigidly and without streaks. This is a great advantage, certainly for coloured versions.

Natural colours

If we look at the systems on the market, we notice that producers are committed to offering diverse colours which are as natural as possible. With the Loba trademark, for instance, we find an oil-based product which can be finished with a lacquer: Loba HS 2K Intensive A.T. This oil gives the wood a nice deep and natural shade and is available in 12 colours. If you opt for one of these 12, you get a very nice natural colour. The maker also points out the option of combining Loba HS 2K Intensive A.T. with Loba Pretone to create even more shades of colour. This water-based colour stain is applied under the primer and is available in five different colours.

Attractive cost price

At Loba the system consists of only two coats: one coat of Loba HS 2K Intensive A.T. oil-based primer and a finish with just one coat of Loba 2K Invisible Protect A.T. with no intermediate sanding. What is also attractive here is that it costs less than a traditional lacquer system with three coats of lacquer.

What’s on the market ?

Blanchon

Blanchon has several oils which can be finished with a varnish, but the most important one is their Solid’Oil™. This has yielded remarkable results for many years now and is greatly appreciated by parquet floor fitters. With several prestigious references, often in high-traffic locations, they offer a reassuring and enviable basis for interested project managers. Witnesses to that include various Printemps shops (in Paris and Île de France), Gant shops (men’s fashion), and such like. The list is well nigh endless. This system is the same for maintenance and renovation as with glazed parquet. To that end there are lots of recommendations and products on the market which are all manageable. The use of high-quality sealers guarantees high durability. It’s worth knowing that the financial impact of this system is relatively minimal in comparison with oil or traditional varnish, and the result is quite remarkable.

Bona

Bona Craft Oil 2K, a 2-component parquet oil based on vegetable oils, ensures fast drying and durable protection. It is the ideal finish for sometimes troublesome wood sorts like kambala, afzelia, and walnut. It is also good for use on smoked oak and steamed beech. Bona Craft Oil 2K yields a really handsome surface which is waterproof and stainproof and is ready for use after a drying time from just eight hours (Neutral) to 12 hours (Colour Oil). It can be supplied as standard in 19 modern colours, which can be mixed endlessly so you can get any colour you want. If necessary, Bona Craft Oil 2K can be lacquered over (exclusively) with Bona Traffic HD water-borne parquet lacquers. This gives the parquet oil an extra protective coat, and that makes it easier to maintain the wooden floor. Bona Traffic HD is a high-quality 2-component parquet finish lacquer for wooden floors which are prone to extreme wear or which endure very high traffic. Bona Traffic is waterborne, low in VOCs, and odourless.

Ciranova

In the Ciranova range it is possible to finish the one-coat oil UN1CO and the coloured Hard Wax Oil Magic with a lacquer, namely FORTICO 2C. In this system you can use the oil for colour and then apply two coats of the water-based and anti-scratch varnish FORTICO 2C. This combination is often also used if you want to get the best possible protection with low maintenance. By applying FORTICO 2C NATURAL to the oil, you preserve the natural look and feel of an oiled floor. If you want more gloss, you can apply FORTICO 2C matt or satin to the UN1CO. The oil and lacquer should be geared to each other to guarantee good adhesion between the coats. There are no special skills required for the application of this system, but it is important to respect the drying time for good adhesion and to use the dual-component lacquer. CHIMIVER SUGGESTED CYCLE: apply one coat of LIOS BIOIL Colorato and two coats of ECOSTAR 2K LIOS BIOIL Colorato is a colored natural oil treatment for wooden floors with easy application, very durable and soft effect on the surface.
