Should we still use UV curing machines on site or is it better for us all to switch to LED? That’s a question which many people in our trade are asking. There is no generally accepted answer, but it does seem safe to say that finishing on site with LED is still a rather burdensome chore and that traditional UV curing is therefore still preferable.
The explanation lies in the technology
To know why LED curing is not immediately recommended, we have to look at the technology of UV and LED. What it comes down to is that you have a transmitter (the UV lamp) and the chemistry as the receiver. Both have to be harmonised properly with each other to create the required curing. The big problem with LED lies in the conditions. The most common wavelength is so close to daylight that you have to create ideal conditions if you want to avoid unwanted reactions. These conditions form a disadvantage for LED, which is much more suitable for finishing parquet in the factory where you can exert much more control over all the factors involved. Transmitter and receiver
Some time ago, an interviewee made the following observation: ‘With UV you shoot with hail, whilst LED is the perfect sniper. On site it’s best to shoot with hail’. What he meant was: Traditional UV transmits on various wavelengths and they reach the appropriate receivers, whilst with LED there is only one type of transmitter and receiver. Do all these things mean that no one uses LED to cure on site? Not at all, but it does seem that this technology will have to be refined considerably, and at the moment it is also rather expensive. In other spheres of life LED may be revolutionary as a replacement for traditional UV, but is that the case on site? No, not really.
DecoRad Systems
On-site UV puts you in control.
DecoRad Systems in the Netherlands develops and manufactures portable UV-curing equipment for the professional market. This portable UV equipment is compatible with all UV coatings and -finishes on the market today. The UV concept is available for various substrates: from vinyl, PVC and linoleum to concrete, wood and even metal. With always the same result, floors return quickly to factory quality. The DecoRad range also includes portable UV-LED equipment to cure hardwax LED oil’s on hardwood floors. We are continuously improving LED performance, we do this in a smart way without the end product becoming too expensive. Over the years, the popularity of UV on-site has increased as it has become more and more known. The coatings/finishes have been improved, but also the UV equipment. The era of pioneering is definitely over. So for projects with a certain time pressure, UV on-site is the solution, speed in combination with top quality.
