Special What are the major benefits of silane adhesives?
CONTROLLED MOVEMENT
SILANE ADHESIVES STICK FIRMLY, BUT THEY’RE FAR FROM UNSHAKEABLE

The great strength of silane adhesives is that you glue ‘something’ so that it is secure, but not so secure that it loses its elasticity. Moreover, it’s an adhesive which can be offered in one or two components and is both ecological and clean in use. The glues do not contain any substances which are harmful to human beings (and therefore the user) and can easily be washed off from the hands with water after use. If you spill any glue during the fitting, it will suffice to clean it up with water.
Due to their elastic properties, you use silane adhesives almost instinctively for wooden floors i.e. for floors where it is best to allow the floor to move somewhat. We have to consider the composition of the adhesives to know how they work. With these products we are dealing with adhesives which consist of modified silane molecules. The adhesive bonding is created by the damp in the air which reacts (or therefore polymerises) with the silane compounds. These can be adhesives with one or two components. Two components are generally used if you want the adhesive to set faster.
Durable and ongoing adhesion
The end result of a silane adhesive is a durable and outstanding adhesion which at the same time still allows the floor to move. The easiest type to use is the mono-component adhesive, which you apply for direct elastic glueing onto cement-bound or wooden subfloors of parquet floors in diverse wood sorts. You can also use it to glue parquet on tiles or other non-absorbent, greaseless, and soapless substrates. The adhesion with a polymer adhesive stays elastic, even if you use it in combination with floor heating. Most producers recommend this adhesive for elements such as solid wood and wide strips, system floors, anhydrite floors, and sand-cement floors.
What’s on the market ?
Bona
The Bona range of silane adhesives integrates shear strength and elasticity and covers a variety of strengths and compositions to meet every challenge. Thanks to the revolutionary Titanium technology, Bona Quantum is the next generation of silane adhesives. This brand new formula offers exceptional strength which only develops further over time. This unique formula combines the benefits of hard-elastic and hard adhesives in a single product. Bona Quantum is initially hard-elastic and gives the floor time to acclimatise and set before hardening into a strong and sturdy adhesive. Bona Quantum is both a damp screen and an adhesive. It covers 90% of glueing needs and adopts the natural shade of white oak for a perfect finish. For higher viscosity, there is Bona Quantum T.
Chimiver
Adesiver Elastic is a single-component hydro-curing prepolymer based adhesive with a silanic termination (MS technology). This adhesive is classified as "ELASTIC" according to ISO 17178 and has very good acoustic insulation characteristics. It's recommended for gluing of pre-finished wooden floor onto marble, grit, ceramic or marble-chip floor tiles, etc... It's also suitable for gluing wooden floor onto underfloor heating and cooling system. EC1 PLUS certificated, Adesiver Elastic can contribute to the achievement of QI CREDIT 4.1, because it meets the certification LEED protocol (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
Devo®
Devo® MS polymer adhesives are suitable for all wood. Devo® Glue MSP150 and MS300 are fully fledged MS polymer adhesives. Devo® Glue MSP 150 is a semi-elastic MS polymer adhesive which contains
no silicone or isocyanates and is designed for multilayer stabilised parquet. Devo® Glue MS300 is the new star product at Devo. This adhesive is suitable for glueing all types of wood and solid wood up to 20cm wide. It is recommended particularly for fitting pre-finished parquet. This glue contains no water or VOC and spreads excellently. Devo® Glue MS300 is a hard-elastic adhesive (about 70 Shore) with high adhesive strength, it conforms to CSN EN 14293, and it has the EC1-Plus (EC1R) classification. Devo® Glue MS300 is packed in 12kg buckets and has a low weight for its type so that you can cover more square metres per kilogramme.

When fitting parquet floors glued with silane adhesives, you should observe the fitting rules specified in DTU 51.2 and the technical recommendations given with the product. Flexible silane adhesives allow the floor to move more and, in contrast to rigid silane adhesives, they put less strain on the subfloor. The elasticity of the adhesives means that they can follow the dimensional variations of the materials and thereby reduce the pressure on the subfloor. The two silane adhesives which they offer are EMFIPARQUET PRO PLUS and EMFIPARQUET PRO ECO. These products are suitable for glueing solid and/or composite parquet.
Pallmann
Soft silane adhesives transmit only low stresses from the wood to the subfloor and allows greater swelling and shrinkage properties in the woodfloor. If unsuitable surface treatment products are applied, it may result in so-called block demolition joints. Hard elastic silane adhesives instead provide higher security with regards to the expected swelling and shrinkage processes in the wood, and oppose a certain resistance to minimize element distortion. The application range is higher than for soft silane adhesives. For certain types of wood floor a limited and manageable elasticity is certainly to be regarded as useful, especially on critical surfaces. But this needs to be chosen in accordance to the surface treatment. Pallmann offers three different 1-component, silane-terminated wood floor adhesives: Pallmann P4, Pallmann P5 (both with hard elastic adhesive ridge) and Pallmann P6 (hard adhesive of the next technology generation).
