Jan Labeeuw (Lalegno)
‘Our company philosophy is based on three vital pillars. We aspire every day to supply top quality at correct and attractive prices. Rapid delivery times thanks to effective stock management and just-intime deliveries constitute another important factor in our success. However, all that would obviously not be possible without investing sufficiently in innovative products or without the development of choice finishes.’
Apparently, this approach is bearing fruit. In particular, the most exclusive collections from Lalegno, such as Barn and Antique parquet floors, are now greatly appreciated. ‘That’s true. They’re very special parquet floors which you don’t find anywhere else and they’re a fantastic addition to our standard range, which is nonetheless very wide. These days, clients think it’s very important to have sufficient choice. With some 140 different parquet floors available in stock each time, Lalegno also offers so much more. We’re still very ambitious for the future and we’re going to enlarge our range even more. We’re currently working on several best-selling novelties for 2016, but, unfortunately, I can’t tell you any more than that at the moment.’
You’re also preparing a new web site. ‘Yes, indeed, we’re retaining the URL www.lalegno.be, but we’ll be upgrading the current web site this autumn. We’re living in a world where Internet has become an instinctive reflex. Nowadays, clients who visit a parquet store have generally got some information from the Internet first of all. We want to be sure that the information which they find there is full and accurate so that they can make well-informed decisions. Quality parquet is an important item in a building or renovation budget, so a quality web site is essential. Moreover, we also want to make our web site more interactive. We’ll also be involving our agents in this project!’
We’re waiting eagerly to see the result.

INTRODUCTION OF COMMERCIAL DIRECTOR CIRANOVA
Since 1961, Renzo Borgonovo and FNT Trabattoni Stampi have been collaborating to supply equipment for wood decoration. In recent years, they have refined wood embossing technology, which is used in the parquet industry. Renzo Borgonovo embossing machines and FNT embossing rollers operate using the ‘pyro-engraving’ technique. With the use of pressure and temperature, the designs engraved onto the cylinders reproduce onto wood/ plywood/MDF/WPC the most varied structures; all this with the use of just one machine and interchangeable embossing rollers with different designs. Architects from all over the world use the know-how of these two companies to create the new and trendy structures which an increasingly demanding market requires. Recently, Renzo Borgonovo has designed a new gas burner with no open flame. This system with special heating elements emits heat up to 300°C onto the cylinder. www.trabattonistampi.com - www.borgonovo.com
We are glad to announce that Mr. Didier Vervacke is, since the 1 of October, fulfilling the fuction of Commercial Director CIRANOVA. Didier has a proven track record in international sales, more specific in distribution and retail. Didier’s function will be assisting the sales team to develop new potential markets for CIRANOVA. He will take over some tasks of Mikkel Seymus who becomes responsible for Industrial finishes. Because of the growing interest in industrial finishes, it was necessary to extend this function. We are convinced that with these changes we will be an even more active partner for the future.

Nowadays, it is accepted as a full-fledged product. Beyond the market growth of LVT, the Global Flooring Alliance

EFWEX 2016 – THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
EFWEX
European Floor & Wall Exhibition 13/15.03.2016 - FLANDERS EXPO GHENT (B)
2014 saw the first EFWEX, a three-day international fair for traders in floors, walls, and finish products. It was a big hit at once. The new professional event attracted the sector for three days. In all, 3600 professional visitors came along, 16% of them international visitors from 24 countries outside Belgium. The satisfaction score recorded by visitors and exhibitors was 7.5/10. In educational terms, that means ‘passed with distinction’! And so, organisers have high hopes for the 2016 show.
It’s ‘five to twelve’ Anyone who thinks it is still possible to wait calmly until the ‘last minute’ to book stand space for EFWEX 2016 should remember one thing: The final countdown has now started. And, yes, the organisers have provided more stand space than in 2014. Hall 8 offers no fewer than 10,735m² of trade fair space. But, at the same time, lots of exhibitors have signed up for bigger stands than during the first EFWEX, and there are also lots of new exhibitors as well. In the first few weeks after the announcement of EFWEX 2016, exhibitors flocked for the best places. Now that the final countdown is on, it’s high time to wake up. There’s only room now, for those who decide quickly.
A crossroads of innovations There are few sectors of ‘construction’ where so many innovations follow each other in quick succession as in our industry. In all segments of the industry, new technology is constantly emerging which leads to new techniques: new (often composite) materials, new chemical products (primers, adhesives, and finishes), new fitting techniques, and new accessories. Floor fitters are bombarded regularly with information about all those innovations. EFWEX 2016 can also be regarded as
a ‘time to take stock’: a meeting place where specialists or purchasers can ponder all those innovations, ask questions, compare systems, etc.
Who are the exhibitors? The exhibitors are primarily manufacturers, importers, dealers, and wholesalers from the following sectors: parquet, laminate, vinyl, LVT, cork floors, bamboo floors, chemical for floors (adhesives, lacquers, oils, and maintenance products), wooden walls, wooden terrace floors, and professional work tools for floor fitting and joinery. Apart from producers and dealers of machines for the wood sector, parquet production, and finish, various specialists in computerisation and efficient woodworking and floor production are taking part in the show. Then, obviously, there are professional federations trade associations, certifying agencies, and the top media in our industry.
Who are the visitors? Visitors include just about everyone who operates professionally in the sector. A varied company of interested parties who are looking for lucrative contacts and the latest novelties. EFWEX 2016 welcomes figures such as parquet traders, floor fitters, joiners, garden constructors, architects, manufacturers, importers, distributors, interior architects, building contractors and promoters, project developers, wood traders, parquet wholesalers, floor specialists, parquet retailers, interior and comprehensive designers, designers, decorators, terrace fitters, garden architects and designers, and landscape architects.
High expectations We listened to what a number of participating companies had to say. Expectations are clearly high.

EFWEX 2016 Ghent (BE)
BJ Parket At BJ Parket they gave a lot of considered thought to their decision to take part in EFWEX 2016 and their participation has two main aims. They particularly want to introduce some new products and are looking especially for prospective clients from abroad. Their primary motivation for taking part is the international flavour of the show. Steven Otte of BJ Parket tells us, ‘If it were solely a national event, we wouldn’t take part.’ The EFEWEX organisers are expecting more visitors from outside Belgium. Other advantages for BJ Parket are the ‘closeness and accessibility of the venue, as well as the typical focus on parquet.’ The Benelux market is extremely important to them.
Lamett
Lamett is coming to the show to cement their links with existing clients, but particularly to highlight one specific product. All will be revealed in due course. Why are they coming to EFWEX 2016? ‘All the top players in the flooring industry will be there, so we really couldn’t afford to miss it,’ says Lien Heirwegh from Lamett. This is the first time that Lamett has taken part in EFWEX. The fact that Belgium and the Netherlands are major markets for them influenced their decision to register. Plinten & Profielen Centrale
Chêne de l’est The French parquet manufacturer Chêne de l’est provides the very best that France has to offer in oak parquet. In March, they are taking part in EFWEX for the first time. Jean-Michel Bach explains why: ‘We’re taking part in EFWEX primarily to build up a good network of agents in Flanders. We have strong arguments to win over parquet traders. All floors are produced in France with real French oak from sustainably managed forests and the wood is PEFC approved. As regards production, too, Chêne de l’est is a sustainable provider with the “Real Wood” label and an A+ label for solid wood and the TOP4 multi-layer parquet floors.’ At the same time, there are also new items to see at the Chêne de l’est stand: ‘We’ll also be displaying our new collections for 2016. We’re presenting some new colours and new surface textures for our ranges of solid wood and multi-layer parquet.’

Floor Forum International 78
The Dutch company Plinten & Profielen Centrale (PPC) is coming to EFWEX for the first time. ‘After we opened our fourth office in May 2015 at Eindhoven, we got lots of requests from Belgium. In Ghent we want to present our wholesale concept to Belgian parquet professionals who don’t yet know us. We’re certainly also expecting clients from the south of the Netherlands at this business event, so it’s also important for us to cement our links with them,’ says director Lisa Augustin-Klaassen, who manages the company together with her brother Peter Klaassen. The linchpin of this wholesaler’s sales concept is that they have everything in stock. They pack orders individually and ship them free to any address on regular shipment days and with good return conditions. Besides the sales concept, PPC will use its stand to present items such as skirting boards, profiles, subfloors, Douwes Dekker Laminate and PVC, and Trenovo, the complete system for stair furnishing and renovation. Peter Klaassen says: ‘All floor fitters or shop managers are most welcome at our stand. We expect to make several good contacts at the show. In 2014, we visited the first EFWEX ourselves and were most impressed at the wide range of parquet floors. There were also lots of wood-related companies, so it really was a trade fair for wood and flooring professionals.’
Z-Parket There’s a new wind blowing through the company Z-Parket. Gaylor Vantieghem has a young and dynamic team of professionals, who are helping to promote the splendour of Z-floors. By participating in the European Floor & Wall Exhibition (EFWEX) Z-Parket is showing that the trademark is stronger than ever. Gaylor Vantieghem says, ‘The EFWEX trade fair is the ideal place for Z-Parket to show off its innovations. It is the opportunity par excellence to present the new Z-studio to the wider public. The Z-studio is a stylish and original way of showing clients the floor samples and letting them make their choice. Moreover, this studio immediately radiates the warm feel of parquet. Furthermore, Z-Parket is also launching a completely new collection with four colours. The special feature about this collection is that these floors have a unique finish method.’
Job de Roode from De Vesting says: ‘That progress is due to our high-quality range of products, namely our lacquers, oils, and stains. These professional products come with an outstanding price/quality ratio. We also regularly launch interesting innovations which soon win over a lot of professionals in the industry. Moreover, we also make sure that we organise production and stock administration so that we can deliver orders quickly. That’s why we think it’s also a logical step to exhibit at EFWEX in Ghent. In recent years, we’ve also been conducting publicity campaigns on the parquet market, so we really have to be visibly present at such an important trade event. Moreover, visitors will be able to see our full range of parquet and we look forward to welcoming them and sharing experiences.’ MAPEI
De Vesting
Over the last few years, the Dutch wood finish specialist De Vesting has made great strides on the parquet market in the Benelux.
Thierry De Coster is area manager at MAPEI Benelux. The Italian industrial chemical giant simply had to exhibit at EFWEX. He explains, ‘For us, EFWEX is the only trade fair in the Benelux which focuses entirely on parquet floors and other wooden floor coverings, so it’s an event not to be missed. Moreover, MAPEI is also market leader in Belgium, so it goes without saying that we have to be there. Parquet traders expect nothing less. It’ll also be an ideal chance to introduce our clients and visitors to some new products. And so, we can launch new products for outdoor wooden floors such as an anti-ageing product for terrace floors and a terrace oil. We’re making every effort to present ourselves attractively at this show. Visitors will see an attractive stand with all our products neatly arranged on display. In short, we’re looking forward to it!’

ORGANISERS ARE OPTIMISTIC FOR A SUCCESSFUL AND INNOVATIVE DOMOTEX 2016 Domotex takes place in Hanover from 16 to 19 January. The organisers have seen that exhibitors are rapidly booking their places and expect a top class show with over 1400 exhibitors from 60 countries. For our industry, interest in the show will be concentrated on halls 8 and 9 (parquet, laminate, and outdoor floors), 5 and 6 (elastic floors), and 7 (machines and tools for floor professionals). This year, too, organisers are expecting over 40,000 visitors from over 80 countries. Dr Jochen Köckler, director of Deutsche Messe in Hanover, comments: ‘It looks like we can expect a highly successful Domotex in 2016. We’ve received considerably more bookings than last year. This is mainly due to the innovative products which our exhibitors have at their disposal. These demand an attractive presentation at an international event. DOMOTEX is the ideal trade fair for that purpose because it is the location where all future trends for our industry will be on show.’ Domotex is an international show par excellence, because no fewer than 85% of the exhibitors come from outside Germany. After Germany, the other countries with the most exhibitors at this trade fair are Turkey, Belgium, China, the Netherlands, and Iran.
Wood Flooring Summit and Innovations@Domotex The organisers have once again announced a Wood Flooring Summit to provide a diverse and innovative summary of interior designs from the world of parquet and laminate. There will be about 200 exhibitors taking part from the world of parquet and laminate and also 180 suppliers of fitting technology. Blanchon (FR) / Carver (IT)
BLANCHON TAKES OVER CARVER PURCHASE OF ITALIAN PRODUCER HIGHLIGHTS BLANCHON’S GLOBAL GROWTH AMBITIONS Blanchon, market leader in France and number two in Europe for finish products for parquet and wood products, has taken over the Italian company Carver, which operates in the same sector. Since both companies have a similar quality philosophy and complement each other nicely in terms of products and international market positions, the takeover offers growth opportunities for both companies.
overseas, too, joining forces means a considerable reinforcement for both trademarks. For example, Carver has a strong position on the Canadian market and in many countries of Southern and Central America, whilst Blanchon is doing well in the United States. And so, both companies clearly complement each other in terms of their geographical market development.
Extensive know-how of Blanchon for Carver As regards product range and commercial development, the merger with Blanchon represents a considerable reinforcement for Carver. Thanks to its good organisation, strong innovative strength and know-how, and expertise in sales and marketing, the French maker can develop Carver’s market potential. In particular, Carver’s range of finish and decorative products for wood should benefit from the new situation.
Two strong trademarks The trademark products of both Carver and Blanchon will retain their visual identity and packaging. Furthermore, everyone will keep their job in both companies, but they can move on into the future with united forces. From left to right: Denis Reyes, chairman of the board of directors at Blanchon, Louis-Philippe Reynaud, CEO of Blanchon, Marianne Rochet, branch manager at Blanchon, Luigi Cuzzocrea, former director of Carver.
Carver is based in Milan and was formed in 1957 by Luigi Cuzzocrea. His forthcoming retirement and a meeting with Denis Reyes, chairman of the board of directors at Blanchon, and Louis Reynaud, CEO at Blanchon, were the reason for talks about a takeover. In view of the corporate values which both makers share and the way in which they complement each other, both parties completed negotiations successfully.
Joint values Both Blanchon and Carver set great stall by values such as quality, seriousness, and respect for people and the environment, as is evident from the product compositions, production methods, and sale of the products for both trademarks. For example, the natural oils of Carver fit in perfectly with the strong commitment of Blanchon over many years to the development and production of more ecological products.
Nice synergies It is particularly the outstanding synergy of both trademarks which means that both companies can strengthen their commercial export strategy. Blanchon has a good position on the construction market in many European countries and also on the industrial finish market. The exception was Italy, where Carver has a strong position, as it does in Austria where it even has its own branch. But

Wooden walls – extra business for floor fitters
PARQUET IS RUNNING UP THE WALLS

Wood has been used as a wall covering since time immemorial. Nonetheless, it had gone out of fashion over the last 30 years. In recent years, however, wood on the wall has once again become very trendy, often as a highlight wall where wooden planks with various finishes provide extra warmth and a natural look. Unlike wood on the floor, the wall surface also doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth of sandpapered. This makes it possible to express creativity
with distressing, rough wood finishes, and special reliefs, and with adapted illumination you even get special 3D effects. This trend is good news for the parquet industry because it provides opportunities for extra profit.

techniques, shapes and colour possibilities, and the preference for natural materials have stimulated the creativity of interior designers and woodwork companies. Moreover, since we don’t walk on walls, it is possible to treat the wall surface extra playfully. This also creates scores of milled and specially treated designs, which also fit in perfectly with rigid contemporary interiors.

Nicer indoor climate and better acoustics Apart from the natural beauty which a wooden wall covering gives, there are also a number of functional benefits. Since wood is a low conductor of warmth, the room will heat up or cool down more gradually. Moreover, it also ensures bet-
The idea of allowing the wood on the floor to continue up one or more of the walls is also gaining in popularity rapidly. Some manufacturers therefore offer collections with wooden wall covering which fit in perfectly with their parquet range. Allowing the parquet floor to run continuously into the wall not only creates more warmth, but also gives certain highlights to guarantee a more pleasant, inspiring, and cosy atmosphere.
ter heat insulation and a favourable effect on heating costs.
Fitting: several possibilities
The more wood in a room, the more efficiently the relative air
We are seeing various solutions for attaching wood to the wall amongst the rapidly growing number of sellers. In some cases the planks are glued to the wall one by one and floor fitters can use their knowledge of wood and experience of timber grading to provide a splendid result. Others offer bigger panels onto which more and more sorted wood strips are glued. This ensures a considerably faster and easier fitting. Apart from glueing the panels or planks, it is also possible to nail the wood onto the wall. Another possibility is a classical system with a support structure. There are also various special fastening systems on the market in which profiled wooden planks can be clicked onto the wall using an invisible fastening system. Those are systems which are also used for outdoor walls or adapted systems which strongly resemble them in terms of concept.

Moreover, wood does not absorb any static electricity, so therefore it doesn’t attract dust and dirt. Finally, wood also has a positive effect on the acoustics. A wooden wall also ensures an improvement in the indoor climate, as has been shown by various studies. The air humidity is more stable in rooms with several wooden surfaces than in rooms with no wood.
has a beneficial effect on the residents’ health since there is much less risk of infections and allergic reactions.
An overview : Eurocovering
Wood finish Usually, the wood is delivered finished by the supplier. It is often treated with an oil, a stain, or a varnish in diverse colours. Obviously, durability is not in question here. A low-maintenance finish which fully brings out the natural beauty of the wood and the special treatments (e.g. smoked, sawn, or distressed) is enough.
At Eurocovering, too, they’ve seen that wooden wall coverings are extremely trendy. The 3D structured models are certainly a big hit. Eurocovering uses only quality wood for its floors. These are multi-layer planks or panels 10mm thick or 6mm for laminate or veneer. There is a choice of scores of colours and wood sorts and there is also a collection with an antique look, namely the Summum Collection. Early in 2016, Eurocovering is launching a brand-new innovative fastening system for wooden wall coverings called The Magnet. This patented solution, which is also being promoted as an innovation at the forthcoming Domotex, ensures extremely simple fitting. Planks or panels are clicked together easily and magnetically and The Magnet renders the use of nails, screws, or glue superfluous. At the same time, the wall at the back remains accessible.

At Lieverdink they have a wide range of products for extending wooden floors to walls. The Q2 two-layer parquet, available in 40 wood sorts and all distressed colours and finishes, can be glued to the wall quite simply. For the trend towards more uneven structures (3D) there is the Woodbricks collection (cleaved oak boards which are brushed heavily and also glued onto a birch multiplex base. Woodbricks can be delivered natural or smoked and/or with a coloured oil finish. The 15 x 63cm panels can be joined together simply using a sort of ‘laser joint’. The antique Charente or Charente Bricks collections are other possibilities for glueing onto the wall. These are made with real antique wood from beams which are about 200 years old and glued onto a birch multiplex.

Teak Your Wall is a range of special wall coverings which are made for 100% from recycled teak wood. The wood on the wall panels comes originally from old wrecks from ships or little old teak houses. The entire production process takes place in the company’s own factory in Indonesia: drying, removing nails, sawing and glueing the blocks onto plywood (6mm), sandpapering, and, if necessary, a finish with a colourless or somewhat darker lacquer. The panels can be fitted horizontally or vertically, they require little maintenance, and they improve the acoustics. Each panel is unique and Teak Your Wall offers 15 designs. The Teak Your Wall range includes: - Skin Panel S and Skin Panel L and MATRIX with various natural wood shades (‘S’ dimensions: 30*120*2.4, 37*117*2.4 or ‘L’ dimensions: 30 * 120 *2.6 of 37*117*2.6) - Java SP SMALL TINY and LARGE: 37* 117 *2.6 - SQUARE: square blocks of 6, 5, or 10cm, dimensions: 37 *117 *15 - Java Rustic and Java White Wash: 90% teak and 10% other tropical hardwood, dimensions: 117*37 You will find a complete list of products on www.teakyourwall.be

The new monumental ‘museum of confluences’ implemented by the American architect Steven Holl has now opened. It was built at the point where the River Rhone and the River Saone merge, behind the Perrache station, thanks to the recovery project of an old storage and port district that had been abandoned for years. The museum is considered to be one of the biggest and most complex structures conceived to preserve the history of humanity, the earth, science, and evolution.

ADESIV AND RANDALINE have contributed to this structure by adding an indispensable touch of Italian Style with rigorous quality standards. RANDALINE supplied and installed the wooden floors using three-layer oak and oil-finished tables as specifically required by the contractors. This unique floor was fully manufactured and designed in the company’s headquarters at Campo San Martino. The installation
followed a radial pattern thanks to preliminary laser treatment before craft workers assembled the boards on a total surface of 900m². ADESIV helped, monitored the work on site, and carried out specific preliminary checks to select appropriate glues. After a careful analysis of the environmental conditions and supports, the technicians chose a single component silane called WB MONO MS PLUS. A team of 15 specialists, including chemists, designers, craft workers and carpenters, received special recognition at the opening of the imposing structure, after a total of 500 working hours. Sanding machines : part III
EDGE SANDING MACHINES MOVE WITH INTERIOR TRENDS THINNER RADIATORS MEAN A SHORTER SANDING ARM
Photo – Devomat Industries
Edge and stair sanders are part of the standard range of parquet sanding machines on offer from specialist manufacturers. These machines with a spoon-shaped nose make it possible to round off the sanding, even in places in a room which are the hardest to reach e.g. against skirting boards, in corners, under the radiators, and such like. Most edge sanders are also suitable for sandpapering staircase steps. With staircase steps, the fact is that each step borders on a higher step going upwards, so that it actually forms an edge (or corner).

Purely complementary We know that belt sanders are perfectly suitable for sanding flat a (large) surface, but that they are not equipped at all for sanding against skirting boards, in corners, or under any obstacles. Furthermore, we can hardly imagine clambering up the staircase with a machine weighing about 80kg to sandpaper the stairs. Likewise, the indispensable rotary disc sanders, which we use for finer sandpapering, can hardly get into the corners. These rotary disc sanders are also quite heavy to carry (they weigh about 30kg). By contrast, edge and staircase sanders are light and weigh between 8 and 13kg.

Sanding machines : part III
These sanders are also specially designed for sandpapering in places which other sanding machines cannot reach. They complement other machines.
Technical aspects The spoon-shape The sanding arm of edge and staircase sanding machines is usually shaped like a spoon. That’s precisely why these machines can do their work under radiators and in places which are difficult to reach. Most manufacturers offer two different sanding arms, namely a long one and a short one. The lengths vary somewhat between the different models, but in recent years we have seen the emergence of more really short arms between 110 and 150mm as opposed to the normal average length of 250 to 300mm. Obviously, some things are related to a historical development regarding radiators. In today’s interior wide radiators have had to make way for flat design radiators. The sanding arm is equipped with a rotary disc of 175mm.
Recorded weight If we compare edge and stair sanders with most other sanding machines, they stand out at once for their light weight. With belt sanders we encounter weights of up to 60 and 80kg for hire machines and professional machines respectively. The rotary sanding machines weigh about 30kg. Edge and stair sanders weigh between 8 and 13kg. It is clear that heavier machines would be much more difficult to handle on stairs. The weight of the machines is just enough to provide the necessary pressure for efficient sandpapering.
Dust suction Dust suction, if it is possible, is even more important with edge sanders than with other machines. It seems quite logical that the volume of dust is greater on the edges: After all, the main surface of the parquet floor is sandpapered twice and dust is sucked up (with belt sanders and rotary sanders). This is not the case for the edges. Just about all edge sanders are also equipped with an excellent dust suction unit with a dust reservoir and/or are fitted with a facility to connect them to an external dust suction installation (unit).

sanding are not a problem. This flexible and versatile edge sander is also ideal for steps and platforms. The appliance is lightweight and the handle is ideally located. The suction makes it possible to sandpaper dust-free. GECKO-FLEX has a powerful 1,500W motor. The revolutions per minute can be adjusted (1400 and 4200 r.p.m.). Furthermore, Alvaket also offers the PALLMANN GECKO STAR. Good results, outstanding abrasive performances and unique odourlessness make the PALLMANN GECKO STAR essential for comfortable edge sanding. It has an unusual suction technique with choices between the dust bag or the adapter for the vacuum cleaner to ensure clean work. Some assets include: illumination of the work field with LED technology, an additional handle at the back for perfect balance, the wheel height adjustment (12mm), the suction 38/35mm or dust bag with cable clip, and the extremely thin sanding beak.
Blanchon & Lägler The Flip edge sander, which was designed in 2001, stands for German quality. It is an essential supplement to the Hummel, which was the very first belt sander and, 50 years after its appearance, is still a symbol for sanding quality today. Flip offers floor fitters perfect sandpapering results with no overlapping and exceptional user-comfort. As regards dust suction, Flip conforms to the German standard on ‘Controlled dust’. The tool is light (less than 10kg) and very convenient to use. You can empty the dust bag in no time at all. There are two operating arms of 155 and 315mm. The machine operates at a speed of 300 r.p.m. and this can be increased to 7750 r.p.m. thanks to a corner plateau. Flip projects all the Lägler principles prominently: quality, ergonomics, and economy.

The Bona Combi Edge is the most suitable for staircases, certainly in view of the light weight and the flexibility of the machine for efficient sanding and thanks to the
ultimate LED lighting, which is fitted to the machine. The sanding arms are easy to change, and the 330mm sanding arm has an excellent reach under deep staircase steps (also ideal for under radiators!). Apart from the merger between Bona and Künzle & Tasin, which unites the best qualities of both trademarks and will eventually lead to a new generation of sanding machines, there haven’t been any recent technical innovations. What they can say is that the addition to the Bona range of the ceramic sanding materials and the Bona Diamond Abrasives has created a whole new means of achieving sanding results. The ceramic sanding materials ensure that even the most troublesome floors can be sanded and that finishes can be removed. The Diamond Abrasives are mainly a problem-solver for renovating pre-fab/UV lacquered floors.

Producers of substrate leveller
SELF-FLOWING LEVELLERS THE GUARANTEE OF SPEEDY AND EFFICIENT GLUEING is drafted, it is necessary to take dimensional tolerances into account so that the product or work yields the required results. The performance accuracies and measuring methods need to be set out as part of the building methods, functional and aesthetic demands, the cost price of the building, the intended use of the building, and the possible repositioning of certain building components in the course of their lifespan’.
Levelling the screed
Photo – Henkel
A level subfloor is primordial. As we have often said, unevenness ‘shows’ or even expands in the final floor. Levelling can be necessary with renovation, but equally so with new buildings. With a new building there is no guarantee whatsoever that the screed is 100% flat. Tolerances are accepted which lie far beyond those of parquet. With renovation there may be several grounds for levelling. To start with, the tolerances in old houses were even greater than they are today. Moreover, lots of drastic renovations involve the demolition of interior walls to make rooms even larger. Whilst with a new building, as a result of the mechanical production of the screed, a floor is usually done all at once with one continuous screed, in the past, this was done room by room. After all, it was not possible to construct sufficient screed within a reasonable space of time for an entire floor. And so, it goes without saying that there are (sometimes big) differences in level between the different rooms. In the past, that wasn’t really a problem because floors (or parquet) were seldom fitted continuously as they are today.
Improving the quality With floating fitted floors such as floating parquet, laminate, or LVT, it is possible to smooth or level the substrate using a whole series of subfloors (e.g. panels or rolls). Moreover, with floating fitting the demands which have to be put upon the substrate are of a different order than with glued fitting. After all, adhesive also has to ‘contain’, and that means there has to be perfect adhesion between floor and subfloor. Indeed, a glued floor means that forces are exerted on the finished floor covering which are less relevant to a floating fitting. At all events, a perfectly smooth and level subfloor is essential for good glueing.
Tolerances in construction What are we actually talking about when we mention ‘tolerances’? Basically, tolerances are ‘permissible deviations’. In other words, when we talk about walls which form a right angle, that angle doesn’t necessarily have to be exactly 90°. When we talk about a perfectly smooth screed, in practice that screed will seldom prove to be perfectly smooth. The BBRI puts it like this: ‘Tolerances make it possible to make an objective statement about the conformity of a product or building work. Defining tolerances is essential since absolute perfection is not feasible in practice. After all, during each phase of the building process (manufacture, implanting, scaffolding, and fitting) or measuring process, imperfections can arise which can lead to deviations from the required dimensions. And so, when a building product or building work
34
Floor Forum International 78
Whether it is a question of new construction or renovation, levelling not only solves those problems for which we actually apply the leveller, but it also has a beneficial effect in improving the quality of the screed. Indeed, this is all about the tensile strength of the screed. If we want to glue parquet (or a subfloor) directly onto the screed, we obviously want a strong adhesion. The tensile strength of a screed means that the screed can absorb the movements of the wood (swelling and shrinking) without the adhesion being broken. However, a leveller also ensures a better spread of the pressure. Since it is much easier to glue onto a well levelled substrate, floor fitters see a drastic reduction in their adhesive consumption.
Uniform porosity The porosity of a subfloor (covering floor) has to be the same everywhere in order to obtain strong adhesion when glueing. If the porosity is not uniform, there is a risk of the screed sucking water out of the glue in the most porous places. What happens then is that the surface doesn’t dry evenly. Since the screed in new buildings is now mixed automatically by machine, defects in the mixture are unlikely. With renovation, the condition of the screed is usually not as good. What can go wrong? The ‘number 1’ chief cause of blemishes in the screed is dismantling of old floor coverings. They can lead to two serious blemishes. If the old floor covering was glued (parquet, vinyl, or wallto-wall carpet), the screed will seldom show uniform porosity after the removal of the old floor. In places where the adhesive has penetrated deeply into the screed, the porosity will not be as good. Let’s not forget,
too, that with the construction of older houses the preparation of the screed was not yet done mechanically and automatically. In the past there was seldom talk of a perfect dosage. And so, with these covering floors the damage had already been done in the past. They were never uniformly porous in the beginning and by the time of renovation (years later), they are even less so. Another problem with dismantling an old floor covering is the fact that screeds are damaged. That means it is often necessary to repair them in patches and you always end up with patches with a different porosity because the density and consistency of (modern) repair grouts can never be the same as those from the (old) screed. The same demands (or at least comparable ones) regarding porosity are in force for the application of self-flowing levellers.
with Pavilast K. To obtain better spreadability, it is possible to add ADECON K500 to Pavilast R. Adesiv recommends using Adesive products for the glueing.
Bona
The fluidity of the levellers on the market is very high so that in some respects they look for an identical level themselves, but due to the rapid setting it is advisable to give that self-flowing character a little assistance with a spatula or mop. At all events the leveller has to be spread quickly. And so, it’s best never to make too much leveller and certainly no more than what you can spread in 15 to 20 minutes. All that is the result of the rapid drying time of the levelling agents. Those drying times differ from brand to brand. The periods for walking on the floor again after the fitting vary from one hour to three hours. The time which is necessary for glueing onto the leveller varies from two to 30 hours. That is also mostly the time which is necessary for applying a second layer of leveller if you have to eliminate an even bigger difference in levels. Most levellers have a filler capacity of 1-10mm per layer. If you apply several layers, it is necessary with some brands to sprinkle quartz sand between the layers. The borderline temperatures between which the leveller may be applied generally lie between 5 and 30°C. Use outside those temperatures is not recommended. The substrate temperature has to be at least 5°C. Air humidity of 65% is ideal. The screed itself may have a residual moisture percentage from 2 to 2.5% and for anhydrite floors this percentage is 0.5%.
If a floor isn’t level enough or smooth enough to meet the legislative demands relating to the floor to be fitted, it will be necessary to level the floor. The method for doing this can differ from floor to floor. Traditional parquet is less critical, but the opposite is true for PVC. If a screed is too sandy and applying a primer fails to solve the problem, a new screed will be necessary. Furthermore, the screed also has to be dry. Otherwise a damp screen will be necessary first. There is a difference between levellers which are used, for instance, for carpet and/or floating fitted parquet floors and levellers used for parquet. Wood is live matter (it swells and shrinks) and puts more pressure on the leveller. And so, the leveller has to have greater tensile strength. Bona levellers are obviously suitable for glueing a wooden floor. Bona has cement-based and gypsum-based levellers. Generally speaking, the levellers are ready after 24 hours for the next phase of the job. Cement-based levellers dry within 24 hours provided that they are no more than 10mm thick, but if they are more than this, it takes at least 72 hours. Gypsum-based levellers dry within 24 hours as long as they are no more than 3mm thick. Each extra millimetre above that raises the drying time by 24 hours. Bona’s best-seller is the H600, a universal leveller for fitting both parquet and elastic floor coverings.

Fluid and fast-drying
Adesiv Adesiv promotes the cement-based leveller Pavilast R for levelling uneven floors. This is done in accordance with the following fitting instructions. Always check the damp in the bottom layer using the correct instruments. The bottom layer must not contain any damp, has to be compact, and has to be free of loose elements such as lime, dust residue, oils, or wax. Bring the water (6.5kg) to room temperature and pour the powder (25kg) onto it in a clean bucket and mix with the electric stirrer until you get a uniform paste with no lumps and of a spreadable thickness. The paste obtained in this way must be left to stand for a few minutes before it is applied using the correct smooth stainless steel spatula (American). Before the application, always check the damp of the covering floor which has to be <2% (<0.5% for anhydrite). The room temperature should be between 15 and 25°C and the relative humidity should not exceed 75%. If the substrate has loose particles, it is better to treat it in advance

One of the goals of levelling is to make the substrate flat enough. The screed has to meet the following criteria as a minimum: permanently dry (with no danger of rising damp), clean, no cracks, sufficiently compression resistant, and sufficiently tensile. The choice for a particular leveller tends to depend on the substrate and the pressure to be applied to the floor later rather than on the type of floor covering. Depending on the use, you can prefer certain properties: fibre-reinforced for levelling wooden substrates, fast-drying if it is to be finished the same day, or increased pressure resistance, if used as a top coat. A primer is almost always necessary to reduce the porosity of the substrate and to form an adhesion bridge with the leveller. You can prevent the formation of air craters which can later ‘show through’ in a floor such as a thin uniform PVC floor covering. The best-seller at Bostik is Niboplan DIRECT, a C 50 – F 10 leveller (pressure resistance > 50N/mm²) and can therefore withstand extremely high pressure later. This can be used as an industrial floor (top cover).

Henkel All floors have different properties. And so, that means that also the required levelling agents have to suit those properties. Therefore, it is important to know in advance what type of floor is going to be fitted on top. This makes it easier to choose a suitable levelling agent. It is necessary to use a primer before levelling in order to bind the substance and to raise the absorbent effect of the subfloor. In most cases it is not necessary to use a primer before glueing onto the levelled floor. For universal use on absorbent and non-absorbent substrates there is the R766 Multi-Purpose Primer. The R766 Multi-Purpose Primer can be used concentrated or diluted. Due to the rapid drying, this product is ideal for renovation. Henkel has an extended range of levelling agents for every possible application e.g. cement-bound in various layer thicknesses, for anhydrite, for wooden floors, industrial floors, under parquet, specially for renovation, and for big differences in levels. Thomsit XXL and XXL Xpres are both virtually dust-free (90% less dust than a traditional levelling agent). This makes working cleaner and healthier.
Lecol For Lecol it is essential that the subfloor for flexible floor coverings is absolutely flat. Otherwise, any unevenness is visible. Lecol has a leveller for parquet and wooden floors, which is absolutely ideal, namely the Wakol Z615. However, Lecol also has other qualities which, for instance, can be used for a PVC floor: Wakol A620, Wakol Z630, Wakol Z645, Wakol Z670, Wakol Z675, Wakol Z680, and Wakol Z715. The type of substrate is obviously important for making the right choice: anhydrite, sand-cement, tiles, or wood. All these levellers are suitable for Lecol adhesives and are self-flowing so that flat substrates can be guaranteed. Cement is the basic ingredient. Fitting parquet is normally possible on the next day, but Lecol also offers a leveller which is dry within a few hours. The star product in this field is the Wakol Z615. It is dust-free and highly fluid (the best flow properties available on the market!).
Stauf Stauf offers several solutions for levelling floors. Stauf SPP-95 is high-quality cement-based leveller. The product is self-levelling and can be pumped. It offers a perfectly smooth surface with high strength and flexibility. Stauf SPP-95 reduces tension and dries quickly. The product enjoys a low emission grading (EC IR plus). Also recommended for all applications and extremely fast drying is the SSP Rapid. IBOLA AS is also on a cement-basis (EC IR plus) for elastic floors, textile, and wooden floors. This product, too, has good flow properties and dries quickly. IBOLA GS is a Universal levelling agent based on calcium
36
Floor Forum International 78
sulphate-hemihydrate, which can also be deployed for multi-layer parquet. Finally, IBOLA RM is a stable repair and levelling agent (EC IR plus) which dries extremely quickly and can be walked on within a few minutes.
Soudal It is important to level the subfloor first and foremost to make the substrate suitable for a floor covering. The levelling agent rectifies surface defects in the substrate (unevenness), makes it smoother, and ensures a healthy and dust-free surface. With porous mineral substrates it is best to use a surface primer (Soudal WBPR 11P). As for sandy or powdery substrates, it is best to treat them with Soudal WBPR-21P Deep Primer. You can apply adhesive once the levelling agent has dried completely. Soudal has one leveller which can be used universally for parquet, laminate, or LVT. VE50 Levelling Agent is a cement-based and synthetically upgraded leveller with outstanding self-levelling properties, and it does not shrink or produce tension.
Tover In its range for substrate preparation in interior, Tover offers a self-leveling compound full of advantages: Rockfloor F10. Its main characteristics are a long leveling time, a thickness of application up to 10 mm by coat and the possibility to lay the wooden floor only after 24 hours. Fiber-reinforced, it is particularly strong and its rough surface improves the adhesion of glues. It is perfectly suitable on under-heating systems. For resilient floorings support preparation indoor and outdoor, the mineral adhesive mortar Rasofloor 5 can be used to even out the surface with a thickness up to 5 mm per coat. It improves the application and adhesion of glues on the sub-floor.

Ship deck parquet
SHIP DECK FLOORS – A MEDITERRANEAN ATMOSPHERE INDOORS TECHNOLOGY TO HELP PROFESSIONALS STAND OUT
Photo – BJ-Parket
If you know that a ship deck floor is also available as a pattern in laminate and you also know that laminate producers draw their inspiration largely from prevailing trends on the wooden flooring market, one thing immediately becomes clear: Ship deck floors are very much ‘ in fashion’. With a ship deck floor, parquet floor fitters can offer something with which it is hard to compete. Ship deck floors really are mavericks when considered from both a decorative and technical point of view. They offer maritime qualities in both areas.
Purely exclusive Ship deck floors belong to the restricted list of exclusive fitting patterns which are familiar to us from the world of parquet. Herringbone,
38
Floor Forum International 78
Hungarian point, end grain blocks, crosscut, and book form are just some of the floors from that list of wooden floors which vary from traditional strip parquet. Nowadays, ship deck pattern is generally appreciated for its rigid and straight look. In the original type of ship deck design, the generally long and narrow floorboards are fitted alternately with a layer of silicone as a joint. The whole has a slender look and looks both modern and classical at the same time. Ship deck floor is one of those rare floors where decoration and technical efficiency go hand in hand. After all, the ship deck technique brings wood into damp rooms even as far as the shower cabin. Yet, apart from that, a ship deck floor is also pure design, the ultimate exclusivity in a modern and rigid interior. Obviously, fitting such a floor (or wall) requires some technical perceptivity and, in particular, the right products.
Teak as the preferred wood
Multi-layer parquet
Ship deck patterns are popular in living rooms, workshops, exhibition halls, and shops due to the fact that they make an extremely elegant impression. Obviously, the fact that fitters often use teak also plays a part in that. Why teak? It’s certainly not the case that fitters are obliged to use teak wood to fit a ship deck floor. Other sorts which are insusceptible or hardly susceptible to wood rot are also suitable. Yet teak is a must for various reasons. This wood is highly resistant to weather and wind, as it has proved in the worldwide shipbuilding industry for over 2000 years. Moreover, teak is completely insensitive to damage by termites. On the other hand, if you fit a ship deck floor in teak, you need to take account of the specific properties of teak, including the high oil content. If you choose a ship deck pattern solely for the appearance of the design, with no regard for moisture resistance, then just about any wood sort is possible.
Strictly speaking, this fitting method is the same as for solid wood. Fitting this system in both solid wood and multi-layer is something for an accomplished professional.
Various types The method of fitting a ship deck floor depends on the type of floor. Here we identify four types:
Solid wood profile With this type the floor consists of solid wood strips which are glued onto the substrate at regular intervals. After that, the joint is sprayed with a pliable filler (see elsewhere in this edition) and then sandpapered, just like any other wooden floor. With this type the fitting is a little more expensive precisely due to the extra work involved with the joint.
Integrated joint Both in solid wood and multi-layer we find dealers who present a ship deck floor with an integrated joint. This obviously removes the extra work on the joint, so the cost price is lower. Furthermore, the fitting doesn’t require any extra expertise. These floors are also fitted in the classical ways, namely fully glued, floating with a clip system, or nailed.
Laminate As we’ve already said, if a fitting pattern proves popular, laminate producers are also happy to include it in their range of decors. With ship deck floors in laminate the joint is usually designed with a rubber strip. The head sides definitely have to be sealed. Generally speaking, you can say that ship deck floors will end up being a little more expensive than other floors. Even with floors with an integrated joint, the fact that fitters often have to fit these floors in bathrooms means that the work is somewhat more difficult due to the smaller spaces. This usually also requires more sawing (and therefore more waste wood). If the moisture resistance is not the (main) issue, it is possible to design the joint in wood. An extremely popular combination for these ship deck floors (also ready for fitting!) is that of teak and wenge. The darker wenge stands out nicely against the pale teak, something which enthusiasts of these

floors love. Others have a distinct preference for combinations with less pronounced distinctions in colour, so that the edging (joint) blends in with the floor more discreetly to give the whole a more peaceful look.
With elastic joint The elastic joint is meant to allow the wood to swell and shrink unhindered. Fitting a ship deck floor with an elastic joint is done according to certain strict rules.
The substrate Specialist suppliers of ship deck floors or elastic joints pay a lot of attention to preparing the substrate with fibre-reinforced polyester substrates and steel or aluminium substrates. These obviously come from the maritime ‘formulas’ and are not applicable here. Basically, a ship deck floor in the home can be fitted directly onto the screed with due regard for the ‘normal rules’ regarding substrate preparation (e.g. primers or levellers). In many cases specialists prefer to fit ship deck onto a multiplex (or other) subfloor so that the floorboards can also be nailed (traditional parquet).
Fitting the laths Whilst glueing wooden floors using MS technology is a fairly recent phenomenon in the parquet industry, MS adhesives and fillers have been used in shipbuilding for many years. The subfloor needs to be fully glued so that the floorboards come fully into contact with adhesive. Adhesive residue or lumps which harden in the floor joint need to be removed mechanically. As a rule, the glue is left to dry for 24 hours whilst the floorboards are fixed in place with weights (this is not necessary with nailing).

NEW:
The joint width The width and depth of the joints depend on the width of the floorboards. The chart below shows the ‘minimum’ joint dimensions in co-relation to the width of the planks. Respecting this minimum ensures that forces which arise due to a change in the temperature and/or the moisture of the wood are absorbed.

Once the joint is perfectly clean, the sides need to be treated with a special primer. This primer must be applied in one continuous coat with no streaks. Working quickly is essential here. In this phase, you must take care not to spread any new dirt or contamination (e.g. from greasy fingers). For maximum adhesion you need to fit the kit within six hours of the primer drying so that a chemical adhesion is created. It is necessary to stick a joint tape to the base. After all, the rubber should adhere only to the joint flanks and not to the joint base.
08-10-15 11:50
Rubbing the product in Now, the moment has arrived! The filler kit is a product based on MS polymers. The filler has be applied in one continuous movement and with excess joint filler (10 to 20% too much). The filler now has to be pressed firmly into the joint using a filling knife. The excess product is removed. Three to seven days later, depending on the product used and the surrounding conditions, the ship deck floor (including the joints) can be sandpapered.
What’s on the market? BJ Parket BJ Parket takes orders for these floors on a regular basis for bathrooms, but the company certainly does not believe that they are a trend. The fact that there is more filling work makes the fitting more expensive than that of a traditional parquet floor. What we can say for sure is that these floors have to be fitted by an experienced specialist. Anyone who is capable of fitting only pre-finished, engineered parquet should not even try to fit these floors. A big advantage of ship deck is that it is a completely waterproof floor. These floors are available in both solid wood and multi-layer. The most important wood sort is teak.
Design Parquet Design Parquet offers a ship deck floor with an integrated joint. This Navylam+ is no more difficult to fit than any other parquet floor precisely due to the integrated joint. The floors are ready for fitting and available in seven wood sorts: acacia, iroko, wenge, doussie, teak, mutenye, and afrormosia. Navylam+ is a 100% solid wood floor. That’s precisely why it feels warmer than a tile floor, for instance. They also promote the low maintenance as a big asset.
Falquon As we have already said, if a particular trend emerges for decors in the ‘parquet world’, this attracts the interest of laminate producers. Falquon is such a producer of special laminate floors. In its ‘Blue line nature’, the company offers a floor which looks like a ship deck floor.
This floor has been part of Falquon’s range for four years and they’re witnessing ever growing demand, especially in specific countries such as France, the Benelux, Scandinavia, China, and Turkey. These floors are equipped with a click system and the black joint is integrated into the plank. The floor is offered in two oak decors and in merbau.
Habo Ship deck parquet certainly isn’t a trend at Habo. Moreover, fitting these floors with a black joint kit or an edging in wenge requires extra work and makes the floor quite expensive. Moreover, fitting these floors certainly requires real expertise on the part of the floor fitter. Habo presents the 9mm Classic Line (solid wood traditional parquet) and 13 or 18mm Top Line (multi-layer parquet) in teak (tectona grandis). Habo applies a U-joint into which either a black joint kit can be sprayed or a wenge edging can be fitted. Teak is still the most important wood sort and can be combined with an edging in wenge.
Junckers For Junckers, ship deck floors are still being sold, but they are not necessarily a trend. They apply the ship deck pattern to the floorboards in the factory. And so, these are pre-finished floors ready for fitting. Over 98% of floors from Junckers are supplied pre-finished. Junckers presents only solid wood. The most important wood sorts are oak and beech.

Subfloors : part III
SUBFLOORS AND FLOOR ACCLIMATISATION SUITABILITY IS DETERMINED BY A CALCULATION, NOT BY INTUITION
Photo – Design Parquet
The efficiency of a floor heating system obviously depends on its cost-effectiveness. With the principle of radiant heat it must be possible to have a comfortable temperature with a low floor temperature. It is clear that the final floor and the possible subfloor together form a (certain) barrier. That applies to both wood and other materials. A subfloor is often necessary in order to meet other requirements regarding sound insulation, levelling, and such like. Whether or not the combination of subfloor and floor covering is suitable is determined by measurable (or measured) values.
Back to nature Two visible trends mean that the combination of wooden floors and floor heating is becoming increasingly popular. On the one hand, there is the energy issue which obliges us to treat energy sparingly. Amongst other things, we do that by using systems which consume less energy. Whether they are powered by gas or heating oil, floor heating operates with water at a low temperature. This means that the water leaves the burner at a lower temperature than with a traditional heating system so that the system consumes less energy. The other trend is also
42
Floor Forum International 78
related to the environment and our living surrounds – we’re returning in huge numbers to the use of natural materials, especially renewable ones. This is purely a matter of common sense. Both trends come together in the combination of floor heating and wooden floor coverings, a combination which has now proved its efficiency over many years.
With glueing As a result of the heat-insulation properties of wood, you do experience a certain resistance to heating up indoor rooms when a wooden floor is fitted onto a floor heating system which has been inserted into the covering floor. The Belgian Building Research Institute (BBRI) therefore advises people to glue the parquet directly onto the covering floor. We will see below that this avoids the need for a subfloor, and that obviously has an influence on heat resistance. With glued fitting, the resistance is determined mainly by the thickness of the wooden floor. The BBRI has a general rule of thumb for this. For a covering floor thickness above the heat-emission-elements of at least 50mm and if no account is taken of the heat resistance of the glues, the theoretically recommended maximum thickness of the wooden floor is 22mm for hardwood (including a mosaic subfloor) and 15mm for softwood.
Combination with a subfloor With floating fitting it may be necessary to fit a ‘subfloor’. That was certainly the assumption of the CEN in their publication in 2013 of the very first technical guidelines (TS 16354) for subfloors for laminate. ‘Making the substrate suitable’ for the fitting: eliminating unevenness is one of those functions. Providing ‘permanent protection’ against influences (damp) from below and providing ‘better acoustic’ comfort are other functions. In other words, a subfloor is often something which you ‘cannot avoid’. To assess whether or not the floor and floor heating can be combined there is a rule of thumb which takes three elements into account: the coefficient conductivity and the thickness of the floor (which together determine the heat resistance) and also the behaviour of the material at higher temperatures.
Coefficient conductivity
due to the success of the combination of both, subfloors have also been developed, which are intended specifically for floor heating. This is also stated explicitly on the packaging.
Be careful with floor cooling! 0.09m²K/W is often recommended for floor cooling. Moreover, it is advisable to provide a condensation setting. Condensation monitoring is designed to prevent condensation in the floor. Since the floor surface temperature is always higher than the temperature of the water in the cooled pipe, condensation can never form in or on the parquet. If this is the case, the cooling is set much too cold (faulty design or an installation which is functioning poorly!) and there is a chance of the floor construction being saturated with damp in between. Condensation monitoring can be applied in various ways. The easiest way is to fit a sensor onto the coldest part of the installation, which switches off the cooling when condensation is detected (resistance reading is affected by a condensation film on the sensor) or shuts off the primary supply of cooled water in the installation.
A good coefficient conductivity helps to spread energy and therefore helps to make the heating system more efficient. The subfloor must have a higher coefficient conductivity than the finished floor covering. Good values for heat conductivity are 0.05W/m-k or higher for wood and laminate and 0.04w/m-k for vinyl.
What’s on the market?
The thickness of the floor
Bona
Another important factor is the thickness of the material. Even very highly conductive materials can show an insulation effect if they are too thick. Thicknesses of more than 3.5mm are usually not recommended because the final heat resistance would be too high. The coefficient conductivity and the thickness of the material together form the heat resistance:
The Bona assortment includes one sort of subfloor, namely cork rubber granules. This can be used in combination with floor heating. The product also has heat transfer resistance of 0.04m2 K/W for the
Behaviour at higher temperatures Another detail which affects the suitability of a subfloor is the behaviour of the used material at high temperatures (performance under heat). Indeed, some materials lose key properties at high temperatures due to their structure, composition, or density. For example, certain materials with a low density (e.g. PU or PE) can lose their properties over time and at high temperatures. Since they lose thickness and impression resistance, they can also lose their insulation qualities.
absorbs noise to 22 dB (also in the bedroom)
Heat resistance The coefficient conductivity and the thickness of the material together form the heat resistance: Heat resistance (Rm-value) = Material thickness (m) Coefficient conductivity (lambda) The heat resistance is expressed in m2.K/W A rule of thumb for determining the suitability of a subfloor for floor heating is as follows: - permitted resistance for floor heating as secondary heating = 0.18m2.K/W - permitted resistance for floor heating as main heating = 0.14m2.K/W
Special subfloors For a while now, the ‘calculation’ of the suitability of the subfloor for application in combination with a floor heating system by the purchaser, architect, interior designer, or parquet floor fitter has become somewhat easier. In fact, in view of the heat resistance, producers have various subfloors which can be fitted on top of floor heating. Recently,

Subfloors : part III
To ensure an efficient floor heating system operation, the subfloor should have a low thermal insulation value (EPLF). This means that the total sum of subfloor and laminate floor must stay below a certain value (heated floors: R ≤0.15m²K/W and cooled floors: R ≤ 0.10m²K/W). Besides suitability for floor heating and cooling, there are also some other important aspects for choosing a subfloor. A subfloor ensures that any minor unevenness is levelled out to give an even surface for the floating floor. It offers constant protection against daily use. A subfloor also improves floor acoustics. The shock absorption also improves walking comfort. Mac Lean has various subfloors which are suitable for floor heating, including Selitflex gold, Selitflex silver, Isoheat, various XPS products, and Isotherm.
Design Parquet
Unifloor
Design Parquet presents the licensed ISO DB subfloor, a two-in-one system which reduces sound considerably and also stabilises the floor. ISO DB is ready for use and can be fitted quickly. The subfloor consists of an insulation polyethylene foam layer between two self-adhesive butyl layers. This subfloor can be fitted with solid wood and multi-layer floors. With multi-layer this is possible to a width of 260mm, whilst for solid wood the maximum width is 140mm. Acoustic performances are improved considerably pursuant to the ‘Acoustic Regulations’ of 1 January 2000 and the prevailing DTU. The subfloor ensures a sound reduction of 18dB. This subfloor is suitable for use on floor heating at low temperature.
Fair Underlay The rules regarding heat conduction as stipulated by the EPLF determine the suitability of a subfloor for combination with floor heating. Fair Underlay has a subfloor called Warm Sand. It is available in three sizes: 1x10m, 1x15m, and 1x25m, and in thicknesses of 1.5-3mm. This subfloor is a roll. The heat conduction is 0.040W/(mK) and the sound reduction >18dB. The density is 30kg/ m³. The options are an integrated damp screen, integrated silver or gold foil, and self-adhesive tape. This subfloor conforms to standards EN 13501-1 and EN ISO 11925-2.

3mm variant. Basically, Bona advocates glueing a wooden floor onto a substrate with floor heating. On the one hand, this leads to better conduction of the heat, which is radiated upwards, and on the other hand it extends the lifespan of the floor itself because there is less spring and swelling and shrinking (pressure on a joint with a tongue and groove joint). Bona stresses the importance of a damp screen. Basically, a damp screen makes a big difference if you don’t have good condensation protection. Once a system is unexpectedly and uncontrollably switched off (so there’s water running through the system which is too cold), condensation will occur at dew point, and that can cause damage to the floor. A damp screen can be the difference between water damage and no damage. However, if you use good condensation protection, a damp screen is surplus to requirements.

Unifloor has been a specialist and market leader for over 30 years in the field of stable, levelling, and impact sound reduction (10dB solutions) subfloor systems for the parquet industry. Their range includes various subfloors, which are suitable for all sorts of applications and floor coverings. For example, the Jumpax® Family consists of a set of six subfloor systems suitable for elastic floor coverings. Jumpax® CP is also a subfloor system for use in combination with Soundkiller® for 6mm traditional parquet. However, Jumpax® CP and Greenfloor® are the perfect combination when it comes to fire safety. Both materials reduce the spread of fire and Jumpax® CP is virtually insensitive to moisture and mechanical damages. Heat-foil® is a fantastic subfloor for click laminate and engineered parquet and can be used in combination with floor heating or floor cooling. Furthermore, despite the minimal thickness of 1.2mm, this subfloor reduces the sound of footsteps and impact sounds considerably. For click laminate and a click veneer Redupax+® is also a suitable option. This 8mm thick subfloor consists of a soft board and a hard board and ensures a highly stable substrate.

Trends in bamboo floors
ATTRACTIVE AND VERSATILE FLOORING MATERIAL FOR A WORLD IN CHANGE Renewable champion Bamboo is a fantastic alternative for wood and unbeatable in renewability. This is due to the fact that it is a tropical sort of grass. This ‘bamboo’ grass grows in double quick time, and it is precisely that speed of growth and the fact that a bamboo trunk is ready for cutting in just five years which makes it a virtually inexhaustible source of raw materials. Equally important for the success of bamboo is its special fibre structure, which is strong, light, and bendable all at once. Just as with trees, bamboo fibre consists of cellulose, but, unlike wood, the long bamboo fibres contain both lignin and silicon. This composition makes the bamboo fibre remarkably strong. Laboratory tests speak of a tensile strength of 40kp/mm², whilst the average wood fibre achieves just 5kp/mm² and, remarkably, even steel fibre for the building industry achieves only 37kp/mm².
Various processing methods bring diversity After the bamboo trunk is cut, the bamboo strips are sawn lengthwise and the outer bark is removed. The strips are then treated, dried, and undergo quality controls. The strips can then be processed into floors or panel material. There are three methods for processing bamboo into a floor or panel material. The first and oldest method is to press the bamboo strips horizontally. This processing method (also called plain pressed) was used over ten years ago for the production of the first bamboo floors on the market. They have the typically recognisable bamboo joints. A second method, which yields a somewhat more slender line pattern, is to press the bamboo strips on the sides (side pressed). The third method (density or strand woven) is the most recent one and offers important extra benefits. Here, the bamboo strips are compressed so that the bamboo undergoes a real change of appearance. The floor material becomes appreciably harder than the original bamboo floors, so it looks more like a tropical hardwood floor. The typical bamboo look is hardly in evidence.
More durable than oak Photo – BambooTouch®
This is the age of natural and renewable raw materials. Just like hemp and wood, for instance, bamboo is one of those raw materials which will be deployed increasingly in the future for more innovative applications. The wide range of possibilities of bamboo as a raw material can be seen today from the diversity of bamboo floors. Today, you find bamboo floors in just about all trendy colours and sizes, and they can also be used for outdoor terraces.
Visit www.floor-forum.com
Bamboo floors are stronger than most hardwood floors. The Brinell test is used to make a good comparison between the durability of bamboo floors and that of most wooden floors. This test measures the impact of a steel ball 10mm in diameter as it hits the floor surface with a variable load between 500 and 3000kg. This test has shown that bamboo is 27% harder than red American oak and 13% harder than American maple, both of which are wood sorts well known for their hardness and therefore a guarantee of a long lifespan. This is in the compressed high density version.

Suitable for bathrooms and floor heating As regards stability, bamboo scores remarkably well, especially the pressed variant. There, bamboo scores two to two and a half times better than most prevalent wood sorts. And so, bamboo remains extremely stable in somewhat more difficult situations, and that also makes it suitable for combining with floor heating and fitting in bathrooms. At the same time, bamboo floors are also good thermal conductors, and this makes them suitable for combining with the ever increasingly popular floor heating.
Diverse colours and finishes possible With any form of processing there are several methods of playing with the colour of the material. Moreover, the material always looks warm and full of character. Nowadays, lovers of natural flooring materials expect nothing but a whole range of finishing methods and colour shades. Here, too, bamboo proves itself to be a modern and future-oriented material. From very light shades, via caramel to warm, smoked, and weathered shades to even very dark colours (think of wenge), brushed, and with a stained, oiled, or varnished finish according to choice, not a single consumer will reject it for this criterion.
Bamboo outdoor floors Wooden floors aren’t just popular indoors. Outdoor parquet, that is to say wooden terraces, are also growing in popularity. Various quality manufacturers already offer terrace planks in bamboo. The look of these planks reminds us of the look of terrace planks in tropical wood, but, here too, bamboo proves itself to be much more stable than bangkirai, for instance, and the majority of other tropical hardwood sorts. Moreover, the bamboo planks themselves can be supplied with tongue and groove on the head side, something which is impossible with tropical hardwood.
Three specialists : BambooTouch® Belgian bamboo floor specialist BambooTouch® has seen a growing demand for these floors, yet it grieves them to see so many vendors still selling mediocre quality floors. BambooTouch® stands for quality and is the only supplier selling bamboo floors which are all in colour. In particular, it is the high-density pressed bamboo floors which appeal most to current market trends and this, moreover, with a unique Brinell hardness 125% greater than that of oak. They will soon be launching a range of extra hard bamboo floors in 22cm-wide planks which look like oak planks, but have the ecological benefits of bamboo. All floors can be supplied unfinished, oiled, or varnished.
Moso Bamboo flooring pioneer MOSO offers a full range of multi-layer and solid bamboo floors with 11 collections. MOSO has found that the latest models of bamboo floors are appealing to consumers and architects more and more, especially the Density floors. Laminate floors : part III
DAMP-PROOF LAMINATE IMITATION FLOOR CONQUERS MORE ROOMS a design floor in white, grey, or black shades or in bright and energetic colours.
Customised laminate Perhaps the most impressive step in the development of laminate is this one, which is still in progress. Laminate is closely related to photography and printing. Furthermore, in this field it is digital technology which catches the eye. Strictly speaking, it is possible to photograph and print anything you like. Thanks to the emergence of digital printing, this can now be done in smaller quantities. This is a step towards fully personalised laminate. Whether we are talking about a holiday photograph of the children or a company logo, anything is possible. Recently, more and more manufacturers have started going down that road and their commitment consists of keeping the minimal obligatory sale as low as possible.
Laminate in damp rooms As for kitchens, manufacturers usually recommend laminate designs which are somewhat more waterproof. Some manufacturers offer laminate floors which are even waterproof enough to be used in bathrooms. They make those floors so waterproof through the use of adapted materials (the bearer), the watertightness of the coating, an extra coating, or by completely glazing the joints of the floorboards (click systems).

Waterproof material The drive for innovation within the world of laminate has never ceased. Moreover, there has never even been a break or a lull. Technical specifications and decorative options are evolving all the time. One of the challenges in recent years has been to make everything more or less damp-proof. Those efforts mean that laminate is now aiming to conquer other rooms in the home. The kitchen is within its reach, but the bathroom, too, is in its sights.
The versatility of laminate Laminate saw the light of day with the explicit intention of imitating wooden floors. Manufacturers are still conducting research in that regard. There is still a big demand for floors which are true to nature and authentic. All technological innovations which can reinforce that have been well received by the market. That authenticity relates to two specific areas. Firstly, the quality of the ‘photograph’ is obviously important. Scanning of the ‘sorts’ is now increasingly veracious and people often look for exclusive designs. Secondly, apart from the ‘photograph’, the now well known forms of surface technology (embossed) also provide the right feel. But there’s more! Laminate has gradually gone down a new path by imitating other types of floors. Natural stone types such as bluestone, marble, freestone, and ceramic tiles form the different ‘stone collections’ of many manufacturers. And there’s even more! Those same manufacturers have discovered that a laminate floor doesn’t necessarily have to imitate ‘something’. This now makes laminate technology so ‘unlimited’. Laminate can also simply be

In this section we consider the waterproofness of the material. Some materials are 100% waterproof and require no extra protection. For example, a 100% PVC floor is perfectly waterproof. Some wood sorts are naturally more damp-proof than others. Beech and maple are generally regarded as extremely ‘nervous’ in the presence of damp, whilst wood sorts such as chestnut, teak, and afrormosia are much more waterproof. The sawing method also plays a part. Plain sawn wood (sawn in the direction of the core) is less susceptible to swelling and shrinking than flat-sawn wood (planks sawn next to each other). Vinyl is highly damp-proof, and is entirely waterproof if it consists of 100% PVC. HDF is used as the base for almost all laminate floors. HDF tends to absorb water and thereby to swell. And so, some laminate floor manufacturers use specially treated HDF which is more waterproof. Usually, we see that these indelible panels are still further reinforced with additional protection for the joints.
Sealed joints In just about all types of floors, except for floors consisting of one piece, the conclusion is the same: The floorboards can be waterproof, but water can seep through to the subfloor via the joints. This is not so important in the context of ordinary domestic or accidental damp. However, it does become more serious when we are talking about laminate in wet rooms. To seal the floor completely, it is also possible to apply a coating over the joints. This is done, for example, with cork, but also with vinyl. For wooden floors the often previously outlined ship deck floor provides outstanding protection. A rubber joint (which is both waterproof and watertight) is fitted between the floorboards.

The combination of the sealed surface and the impenetrable floor ensures total security. The same system is also applied for laminate. ‘Waterproof’ doesn’t mean that the bearer is infinitely resistant to water. To make a laminate floor waterproof there are systems in which a water seal is achieved near the joint (connection between the floorboards). With some systems the edges are protected against damp or the click system is made completely watertight. Others make the floor watertight by fitting a rubber strip to the joint system.
suitable for both the floor and wall (Aqua-Step XL). The material (PVC) has good sound insulation properties and has a warm and comfortable feel.

What’s on the market? Egger The new collection ‘Egger laminate flooring 2015-2017’ includes a wide range of waterproof aqua+ floors. The core is an HDF panel which is five times more resistant to damp than traditional panels. The perfectly sealed top coat prevents the plank from swelling around the edges. The high-quality damp screen aqua+Aluflex also protects the floor from rising damp. Another possibility is to fit the Dilenzio Duo subfloor with integrated damp screen. For protection from damp along the walls, Egger presents the aqua+ spacing and sealing tape. The aqua+ skirting boards in corresponding decors provide the finish. For special applications there is the aqua+CLIC SEALER. These floors can be deployed in damper rooms, but not in rooms which are permanently damp. And so, you can fit them in bathrooms, but not in saunas, steam baths, or shower cabins.
The suitability of laminate for use in damp rooms is the result of the combination of a waterproof and impenetrable top layer and also a profile underneath which is based on waterproof material. Several designers only supply material with an impenetrable top layer which is then edged with a rubber seal. Nevertheless, you are never really certain of the density. That’s why the only proper solution (and therefore the only solution) is a product with both a top and an underlying substrate in water-resistant material. When they say ‘suitable for damp rooms’, they mean kitchens and bathrooms, but also the paths and such like around indoor swimming pools. The combination of an anti-slip top layer such as Parcolux and Parcostone makes it even better for this purpose than a lot of ceramic tiles. Apart from the effective moisture resistance, the easy fitting, the impenetrability, the anti-slip layer, and the natural look of wood are strong sales arguments.

EPOXY-POLYURETHANE ADHESIVE IS ALSO A HYBRID IT COMBINES THE QUALITIES OF DIFFERENT FORMS OF TECHNOLOGY
Photo: Kerakoll
What actually is the definition of a hybrid adhesive? Surely it’s ‘an adhesive which combines different forms of adhesive technology’? In other words, we make a better product by uniting ‘the best’ of different products. For example, silane adhesives can have a silicone or a polyurethane as a backbone with one or more functional silane groups, which cross-link during the reaction process. Several expectations of adhesives can be improved by combining the qualities of different sorts of adhesives. This obviously applies to the combination of PU adhesives and epoxy resins.
BBRI division A few years ago, the BBRI Parquet work group started on the revision of TV (Technical Sheet) 218 'Wooden floor coverings: wooden floors, parquets, and veneer wood floors’ from 2000. This TV keeps the sector informed of the industry’s best practices and supplies precise technical information about product families and fitting techniques without the commercial perspective. This TV 218 gives floor fitters a full list of adhesives and their uses. The range of parquet glues has grown enormously in recent years. On the one hand we are seeing the emergence of completely new sorts of adhesives such as MS polymers and hybrid

adhesives, whilst on the other hand some adhesives are falling into disuse (or are prohibited) due to less effective performances or because they have proved harmful to the environment (e.g. alcohol adhesives). The current wide range has made things very complicated for parquet floor fitters. You could say it’s a case of the ‘woods and the trees’. Which sort of glue offers the best guarantee of durable floor glueing?
high mechanical and physical properties. With epoxy-polyurethane adhesive, epoxy components are added, which have little effect on the elasticity of the glue. Epoxy-polyurethane adhesive is a marriage between two sorts of glue which results in what is perhaps the most reliable adhesive.
Various elements play a part in the choice: • The nature and flatness of the substrate. • The properties and dimensions of the floor itself i.e. the wood sort, width, thickness, type of floorboard (solid wood or multi-layer), whether or not the floor is finished, etc. • The possible presence of floor heating. • The fitting method and properties. Technical Sheet TV 218 takes account of a division of the glue sorts into ‘sturdy’ and ‘flexible’ adhesives. This distinction corresponds largely to the distinction which we have already made between hard-elastic and soft-elastic adhesives.
The properties of polyurethane adhesive arise from the composition of the substance. PU is a co-polymer which consists of hard and soft segments. These segments are created by the reaction of urethane and isocyanate, form a long chain, and alternate with each other. The hard segments tend to crystallise and form a hard material. The soft segments, considered separately, form a syrupy fluid. A combination of both segments ensures that the best properties of both are united. That’s why PU adhesive is very strong, yet still elastic. The adhesive bonding is created by water (damp in the air) which reacts (polymerises) to urethane compounds. If the adhesive surface is shut off from the air (glue is too thick or doesn’t allow air through), the glue will not set. The water cannot reach the glue.
The most recent distinction is that between hard adhesives, hard-elastic adhesives, and elastic adhesives. This distinction is drawn in the ‘new’ standard ISO17178, which has replaced the previous EN14293.
Epoxy-polyurethane adhesive Polyurethane adhesive is still the preferred choice of many parquet floor fitters. What we can say is that this sort of adhesive is ‘flexible’ on the one hand, but, on the other hand, it also has some very

Epoxy Epoxy is a thermo-hardening synthetic, which can be used to help to produce composites. During production, the material is liquidthin and lends itself to the impregnation of fibre material. The composites produced in this way are weatherproof and waterproof and are used to make items such as sailing boats. Furthermore, epoxy is used as the basis for lots of products. Examples include epoxy adhesive, paint (liquid paint and powder paint), and print plates for electronic switches. Epoxy has a compressive strength and a tensile strength twice that of concrete. Due to its liquid density, it can be used in many processes, including as a floor application.
Epoxy-polyurethane adhesive As the name suggests, an epoxy-polyurethane adhesive is a polyurethane adhesive with epoxy components. Some people think that the combination of polyurethane and epoxy is the most reliable and result-assured adhesive technology available for wooden floors. These adhesives contain all the good of polyurethane combined with the strong properties of epoxy. Epoxy-polyurethane adhesive is very often recommended for glueing parquet in critical situations, for critical substrates, or for the so called critical wood sorts. The properties and applications of epoxy-polyurethane adhesives differ slightly from producer to producer.

When we talk about ‘damp screens’ as preparation for the (excessively damp) substrate prior to fitting parquet, the name epoxy is mentioned regularly. A damp screen has to form a barrier between the source of the damp and the wood of a parquet or wooden floor. The damp screen has to adhere perfectly to the substrate (covering floor) and obviously has to be waterproof and watertight. Most damp screens consist of dual component epoxy resin. Epoxy damp screens can generally be used with a residual moisture percentage of up to 4 to 4.5%. The epoxy components in the glue combination discussed here certainly offer the adhesive (after setting) high moisture-barrier properties, but they cannot be regarded as damp screens. Fitting a damp screen and glueing parquet are two different functions, two different responsibilities, and two distinct product types with different standards as regards performance.
What’s on the market? Adesiv
Adesiv was one of the first European makers to introduce 2-component epoxy-polyurethane adhesives. These adhesives are still one of the strong points of Adesiv and are the product most in demand in over 25 countries. Euro F1 (no solvents), Pelpren PL6 (EC1), and Euro 5 (EC1/no solvents) are dual component and waterless epoxy-polyurethane adhesives specially for glueing wooden floors onto any sort of concrete substrate or existing non-absorbent floors (marble, tiles, Palladian, and wooden substrates). The adhesives are suitable for glueing pre-treated wooden floors onto concrete sand-cement covering floors or existing non-absorbent floors (marble, tiles, Palladian, and wooden substrates). The sometimes extremely ‘changeable’ tropical wood sorts are no problem for these glues and it is also perfectly possible to combine floor heating with these glues. These glues are odourless and do not contain any health warnings.
Henkel From Henkel we present Thomsit P625. Thomsit P625 is a dual component polyurethane parquet adhesive with epoxy components (for glueing mosaic, strip, and solid wood parquet, exotic wood, engineered parquet, cross-cut wood, and pre-finished). This adhesive contains no solvents and has low emissions. It is ideal for glueing critical parquet sorts with a high water absorption and for chip-resistant glueing of large-size parquet in particular. This adhesive is also suitable for glueing rubber floor covering and for glueing laminate onto Thomsit-Floor TF 303 insulation underlay. Thomsit P625 guarantees rapid initial adhesion and is suitable for floors with floor heating. Thomsit P625 is suitable for glueing onto both absorbent and non-absorbent substrates.
Tover Two-component epoxy-polyurethane adhesives still represent an excellent compromise and combination between high adhesion performances on any support and a competitive price. Even if less elastic than silane based products, Tover adhesives are strong
Devo®
Devo® Glue PU 570 2C and Devo® Glue PU 650 2C are both waterless dual component polyurethane-epoxy parquet glues specially for glueing wooden floors onto cement-bound substrates or onto existing floors (tiles, marble, wooden floors, etc…). Both glues are suitable for glueing parquet directly onto concrete, a cement covering floor (screed), anhydrite, fermacell plates, and wood. They can also be used without a subfloor on degreased ceramic tiles or marble. Devo® Glue PU 570 2C is semi-elastic. The combination of permanent flexibility and long open time (120 and 90 minutes respectively) and great adhesive strength make these adhesives technically high-quality products. It is a very good all round glue which can be applied in most critical situations.

enough to bond on under-heating systems massive big dimensions boards. TOVCOL TP2C, solvent free and odorless and TOVCOL T.A. are also suitable for small and medium sized floors, thanks to their long working time (around 2 hours) and good yield. They are also particularly easy to mix and apply and much easier to clean with respect to polyurethane adhesives. The direct contact with skin may induce allergic reaction but a simple protection with gloves avoids such a problem and the numerous glues advantages and positive features make them very popular.
Stauf With the epoxy PU adhesive from Stauf, epoxy is the basis of the hardener. Stauf has only one adhesive based on this technology and this is negligible as compared to its full assortment. This glue is used when the floor fitter attaches great
importance to a long open time, a low price, and the possibility of working with all wood sorts. This adhesive can also be deployed anywhere with no limit.
Mapei Mapei is producing it’s epoxy-polyurethane adhesives to meet the demand from a few EU countries where they are still popular. They represent about 15% share of the wooden flooring adhesives turnover of Mapei. It notices though, that in the bigger EU markets the one-component adhesives are much more popular. Mapei offers three different epoxy-polyurethane adhesives with one type that is completely solvent free. According to the Italian manufacturer the benefits of epoxy-polyurethane adhesives are that they are suitable for all types and sizes of wooden flooring and all kind of subfloors. Opposite to the old solvent based technology that contains ammines this type of adhesive does not cause intolerance and allergies for the installers.

A MAVERICK CALLED BELGIUM ODD SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT, BUT A FAVOURABLE ECONOMIC CLIMATE Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy in NorthWestern Europe. The country has a total surface area of 30,518km². Geographically, Belgium can be divided into three regions: Lowland Belgium (up to 100 metres high), Middle Belgium (from 100 to 200 metres high), and Upland Belgium (from 200 to over 500 metres high). Politically, Belgium is divided up into three regions, namely the Walloon Region (French: ‘Région Wallone’), the Flemish Region, and the Brussels Capital City Region. Belgium offers a healthy business climate, despite the vastly complex political situation. On the flooring market the country plays a global role in some segments.
Historic complex Anyone wanting to trade in Belgium is often confronted with very confusing regulations, legislation from different authorities, widespread jurisdiction, etc. In the introduction we forgot to mention that there are also three official ‘Communities’ and at the same time three official national languages. Understanding Belgium at all requires a little context and, you’d better believe it, even lots of Belgians themselves no longer understand the origin of the current discrepancies and political disputes at all.
Walloons and Flemings After Belgium gained independence in 1830, it became a unitary state. Although the law in Belgium gave freedom of language, in practice everything was done in French. The Walloons used this freedom of language as the right to govern the country in French. It wasn’t until 1898 that Dutch became an official language. Previously, education, justice, and government administration had all been conducted in French. Anyone who wanted to make an impression in the old Belgium couldn’t make progress in Dutch, but had to speak French.
Agriculture versus industry By the end of the 19th century, the difference between the two groups was becoming clearer. Flanders was still a very Roman Catholic agricultural community, whilst Wallonia was becoming industrialised. And so, the French part was more prosperous than agrarian Flanders. Unemployment on the Dutch-speaking side was much higher than in the French-speaking part. And so, a lot of Flemings moved south to find work. However, they adapted to the French character of the region and the many Dutch-language surnames in Wallonia are relics of this historical development.
The dream of ‘Greater Brussels’ Actually, the Walloons wanted to distance themselves from poverty-stricken Flanders since it was costing them money, whilst Flemings resented the Walloons’ cultural dominance. Everywhere the Walloons went, they repressed Dutch for the benefit of the French language. Even the Belgian national anthem didn’t have an official Dutch version (until 1938). By 1968, the people of Leuven vehemently resented the
56
Floor Forum International 78
fact that French speakers had their own French-speaking university in the city. The city was becoming more and more French, shopkeepers spoke French there, and the Walloons were dreaming of a ‘Greater Brussels’ which would extend as far as Leuven!
The roles reversed All these irritations led to major state reforms between 1970 and 1993. Finally, both groups got what they wanted. The Walloons were given economic autonomy (the regions) and the Flemings were given cultural autonomy (the communities). They were now authorised to provide education themselves. In 1993, Belgium became a federal state with regions and communities. Peace appeared to have been restored, but, even today, there are still discrepancies between the north and south. Nowadays, Flanders is more prosperous than Wallonia, whilst unemployment and absence from work through illness are higher on the Walloon side. Whilst Flanders plays a full part in the service and knowledge society, Wallonia has not managed to replace the steel and mining industries.
Towards a confederation? Despite the fact that the country is a federal state, it still has a central authority. After all, Belgium collects the money (from corporate tax, income tax, V.A.T., and tax levied at source) and gives it to the federal regions. And so, federal regions can make their own decisions, as they still receive money from the federal government. And so, the regions can take on public servants, whilst pensions are paid for by the federal government. Therefore, a lot of Flemings in particular think that the regions don’t benefit enough from their own decisions. Many Flemings want a confederation, an alliance between two or more independent states. They would do everything separately, apart from the elements for which they would conclude agreements. Time will tell whether or not such a confederation will ever materialise.
Belgium is getting on well Wealthy Belgians Belgium’s citizens are the fourth wealthiest in the world. At least, those are the findings of the annual Global Wealth study conducted in over 50 countries by the insurance company Allianz. Belgium has actually dropped one place, as the United Kingdom has overtaken it. Switzerland heads the list. In 2014, the average Belgian has net financial capital of €84,770. This puts the country in fourth place, one place lower than in 2013, but its capital has increased by 3.1%. Financial capital is the total sum of elements such as bank deposits, shares, and pension funds, minus private individual debts (e.g. mortgages or consumer credits). Switzerland is in first place, followed by the United States, with €157,000 and €138,000 respectively. If we take the gross figures (i.e. including debts), Belgium does less well and is in ninth place with €101,017, a rise of 3.9%. Here, too, Switzerland and the United States lead the field, the Swiss by even as much as €238,306. For that matter, both countries have headed the list of richest countries (both gross and net) since 2000.
Euro crisis leaves its marks It is certainly clear that the euro crisis is still leaving its marks. For example, the gross financial capital in Western Europe has risen by 6.7%, but just about all southern countries are at the bottom of the rankings, with Greece in a lonely last place with a drop of 7.3%. At the same time, debts have also risen slightly. In Western Europe, Belgium is in second place with a rise of 5.5%. Here, too, the effects of the euro crisis are in evidence, with countries which were (or are) in difficulty which are trying to reduce their debt by means of ongoing savings. The level of debt in Greece has fallen by 2.3%, in Spain by 3.6%, and in Ireland even by 5.5%.
Distribution of the wealth Globally, the population is richer than ever before, but that wealth is unequally distributed, as is apparent from the report. The average poorest 50% of the population in the countries studied possess barely 5% of the capital. Belgium does better here, with equality even increasing over the last fifteen years, an exceptional position between the other developed countries. Moreover, inequality worldwide is nowhere greater than in the United States.

Wooden floors in Belgium Generally speaking, people in Belgium are showing an increasing appreciation for parquet and wooden floors. Nevertheless, the country is still the smallest country in Europe in terms of production. As regards consumption, Belgium hovers around a few places above bottom position.
Production As the smallest parquet producer in Europe, Belgium accounted for 0.66% of the total production in 2013. That year, Belgium produced 466,705.80m² of parquet. Whilst the European production volume has fallen, the Belgian share has risen in line with an increase in the number of square metres produced (the figure was 450,556m² in 2012). Belgium is still the smallest producer, however, followed by Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Hungary.
Consumption In 2011, the FEP countries together consumed 91,475,000m² of wooden floors. Belgium accounted for 3.59% of that figure, consuming more than Rumania, Hungary, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. In 2012, consumption in the FEP countries also fell by no less than 5.88% to strand on 87,509,000m². The Belgian share of the total consumption has risen to 3.63%, but the country’s actual consumption fell from 3,328,952m² to 3,176,576m².
World class players with Belgian roots Belgium might be a relatively small country in the world of parquet and wooden floors, but this is certainly not the case for some other types of floors. We all know that acquisitions, takeovers, mergers, and such like in the flooring industry mean that it’s not always easy to determine the origin of a lot of companies, but one thing’s for sure: When it comes to major world class players in laminate, the most thriving trademarks have their roots in Belgium. The same applies to flexible floor coverings, not least to textile where one of the world’s biggest groups originates from West Flanders. Belgium also houses some globally active players in the fields of accessories and chemical products.

B-FIX
Originally, the company Sindrilla specialised in fitting wooden terraces. Over the years, they have developed their own fastening system under the B-Fix label. Since 2012, Sindrilla has opted entirely for a B2B formula, so it no longer fits terraces itself. B-Fix is growing constantly and has launched several innovations in recent years based on its experience. Quality, speed, and simple fitting are key concepts here. The core business is the sale of fastening systems for wooden terraces and boards. The top product is B-Fix One/Black One, a universal fastening system for terraces (exotic wood, thermo-wood, local wood sorts, and composites). The company employs six people. A good two years ago, they opened a second production line to meet the growing demand. The annual production amounts to 300,000m². They have promised a number of innovations for 2016. +32 (0) 10 400 790 - www.b-fix.be

Habo is a fourth generation family business which has grown from a traditional stylish furniture manufacturer. For over 35 years, they’ve been producing traditional solid parquet. In 2011, they also launched the production of multi-layer parquet. A love of wood and a passion for quality awareness are the main features of their company. Habo processes French oak and buys it directly from about 30 sawmills in France. Their regular partners are essential for supplying permanent quality. These purchases are dried under their own supervision at Chêne de France in Avoine. A careful and balanced drying process is the first step towards producing quality parquet. Apart from French oak, they also offer an extensive range of exotic wood sorts. They have considerable stocks at their disposal so that they can supply a wide range of wood and parquet sorts at short notice. In their branches at Genk (Belgium) and Weert (the Netherlands) they produce about 250,000m² of parquet per annum. They invest constantly to keep their machinery up to date and efficient. Together with their parquet wholesalers Albers and Holz Bois, they form a closely knit team of 40 reliable and enthusiastic employees. + 32 (0) 89 32 95 80 - www.holzbois.be

CSP-ENGINEERING Specialist in computerisation for the parquet sector CSP is a specialist in computerisation for the parquet sector and has developed an extensive and efficient range of machines over the years. For example, there is the Par-Scan® parquet scanner, which measures, registers, labels, and packs parquet packages without any manual intervention. Par-Info® can be used to add information (brochure) for the end user. There is also the ParDuo®, which is designed specially for glueing two-layer parquet with PU hot melt on a conveyor system. This machine makes it possible to glue up to 20m/min. on a conveyor system. It produces at a fixed or variable length and has a CNC-guided saw. Par-Stack® is an automatic stacking machine which ensures that floorboards are stacked neatly onto a pallet either loosely or packed. The machine has a capacity of up to eight packages a minute. For feeding four-sided planing machines there is the Par-Feed® feed table. Finally, by using PAR-Stock®, the producer is aware of the number of floorboards in stock at any time. New PAR-Filler® The PAR-Filler® was launched at the end of last year and has been a truly international innovation for the parquet industry. It is an automatic machine for filling gnarls and cracks in parquet floorboards! All the gnarls and cracks in the floorboard surfaces are dusted and filled mechanically in one process, irrespective of the skills of the operator. All the gnarls, cracks, and hairline cracks in the floorboard surfaces are digitalised. After that, two applicator heads work together and apply the wood filler under high pressure in exactly the right places. PAR-Filler® works in a conveyor system and is equipped as standard with a feed buffer and an automatic retrieval system so that only one operator is needed for the machine. For this very exceptional machine, CSP Engineering has developed Cosmeti Wood®, a new and ecological wood filler with unique properties. Cosmeti Wood® is ready for use, does not contain any solvents, looks nice with colours or oil, does not flake off when planing, and is very easy to sandpaper and brush. Cosmeti Wood® hardly shrinks at all during the drying and setting process (this can hardly be measured) so that it is possible to apply the filler in one production step, even with very big gnarls. The production of the PAR-Filler® is now in full swing. It has attracted vast attention on the international market, so plenty of orders have been received. + 32 (0) 14 37 77 52 - www.csp-engineering.be
Kaneka MS Polymer™ Your Premium Choice for producing sealants, adhesives and coatings! www.kaneka.be
SOUDAL Soudal has been in existence since 1966. In recent years, the company has grown into the biggest independent European producer of putty, adhesives, and PU foams for both professional and private users. Partly thanks to new acquisitions (TKK, McCOY, Rectavit, and Accumetric) in various parts of the world, Soudal stands out as an international world class player. With an expected turnover of 625 million euros in 2015, over 2,300 employees, and 53 offices of its own, including 14 production plants on four continents, this 100% Belgian family business, whose founder Vic Sweerts himself is still at the head, has become an expert in chemical building specialities. Impressive investments in research and development, an innovation vision for years on end, and adaptations to local market needs have laid the foundation for this outstanding performance, which led to Soudal being voted as company of the year in 2011. The basic Soudal products are filler kits (silicone, acrylates, etc.), PU foam, adhesives (parquet glues, contact glues, and assembly glues), hybrid polymers, technical sprays, and comprehensive system solutions for air tightness and insulation or complete shop concepts in the retail market. Within the parquet range, Soudal concentrates mainly on the hybrid parquet adhesives MS 20 Plus, MS 30 Plus, and SMX 30 Plus. This trio of new hybrid parquet adhesives turns out an EC1 Plus label, and this puts them all in the very lowest category as regards VOC emissions (Volatile Organic Compounds). The latest Soudal product is adapted to the increasingly stricter energy standards. Soudatight is a polymer paste which, once spread or sprayed onto a wall, forms an elastic and airtight membrane. +32 (0)14 42 42 31 - www.soudalgroup.com

PARCOLYS FLOORING Parcolys flooring was formed in 2001 and has concentrated on the production of laminate floors in PVC. They have chosen Aquastep as the brand name. The company’s first unique selling point was ‘100% waterproof laminate’. They have mainly gone down the road of working with distributors and supplying DIY chains. The company has been under new management for about two years and last year also changed its shareholder structure. Since then, it has resolutely gone down the road of renewal and innovation. Parcolys Flooring aims to offer technical solutions based on PVC and titanium-mixed profiles. Furthermore, Parcolys has also launched Parcostone in two sizes: This is a stone decor in tile format, which can be used for both walls and floors. The turnover of Parcolys Flooring in 2014 was over six million euros and the company employs 28 people. The annual production capacity is 500,000m. In 2016, the company is planning to launch Parcolux large, a new subfloor, and there are some other novelties in the pipeline which they cannot yet reveal. +32 (0) 55 210 220 - www.aquastep.be
