What’s the significance of the Balterio takeover for UNILIN, divison flooring? ‘UNILIN, divison flooring, with its Quick-Step brand, has always been a pioneer in innovation in the laminate sector. Think of the Uniclic® installation system, which ensures that you don’t need glue to fit laminate floors. In Ruben Desmet (General manager design, too, we have a tradition of innovative decors. The Laminate at UNILIN, division flooring) deep structures which run into the joints with the recent Impressive collection are an example of that. Balterio has a similar strategy and history. In recent years, they, too, have come out with innovative technology for laminate such as the Chrome Zone gloss for the grain structure in laminate. For Balterio the takeover means continuing with such innovations. Moreover, both companies will reinforce each other in the field of innovation.’

Together with Pergo, UNILIN, divison flooring now has three strong laminate brands. How do you see the market strategy for the laminate market? ‘The three brands have their specific qualities and assets and the collections will all retain their own character. Quick-Step is a quality brand which enjoys a strong reputation amongst consumers in scores of countries and which is a pioneer in terms of design. Pergo presents itself as highly durable Scandinavian laminate with cast-iron guarantees in that area for the commercial market. Balterio stands out for its stylish collections and involves its clients in the development of specific collections.’

How important are technical innovations for the laminate market?
52 Special Drying oil with LED light: how does it work?
‘Without a doubt absolutely crucial. The current position of the laminate category on the flooring market is precisely due to decades of innovation and product refinement. UNILIN, divison flooring has made a major contribution with the UNICLIC fitting system and, more recently, waterproof laminate floors. Recently, too, developments such as digitally printed laminate ensures that the laminate segment retains strong assets in terms of quality and look as well as its dynamism in the sector.’

FLOOR FORUM INTERNATIONAL WISHES YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A SUCCESFUL 2017!
Finally, how’s the laminate market developing in Western Europe and elsewhere? ‘With the exception of Germany and Austria, we’re seeing that market development is generally favourable. Volumes sold are rising almost everywhere. Southern Europe, too, is doing very well and seems to be recovering after severe crisis years. In Eastern Europe and Turkey, too, laminate is reinforcing its market position.’

They have opted for a distinctive approach with purely Dutch products as their speciality. The fact is that this highlights the finish of their floors. There is great diversity, ranging from covering products to a natural look. Wood Sensation supplies a total package of options: colouring, brushing, or planing floors. They offer a basic collection of current colours, but also the option of custom-made floors. The multi-layer floors (Dutch production) are the main products from Wood Sensation. These floors consist of a birch multiplex underlay onto which a top layer of solid oak is fixed by means of cold glueing. FNT Trabattoni Stampi ‘New designs at FNT Trabattoni Stampi Thanks to the great demand of new models, FNT is constantly developing new designs to emboss flooring boards by means of “pyro-engraving” technique. Trend in the last months concentrates on natural effects, with deeper structures. Our customers are used to send us physical boards of antique wood from which our team extracts the pattern by means of sophisticate optical devices; then, elaborates to manufacture embossing roller-moulds. Several new patterns will be displayed to the next edition of Ligna (Hannover 22-26 May 2017). It was a successful year for roller-moulds’ production at FNT. This, also thanks to installation of a new machine able to engrave rollers up 3500mm. Such big rollers are suitable (among the others) for linoleum embossing. FNT is also able to manufacture flat moulds for embossing press in big size for solid wood, plywood, and MDF embossing.

CO-OPERATION BETWEEN KRONOSPAN AND DECRUY TO PRODUCE FLOOR PROFILES FROM DPL AND PVC FLOOR PLATES Kronospan, the biggest laminate manufacturer in the world and, since recently, also a PVC floor producer, has started working together with Decruy NV from Houthulst (Belgium) for direct production of skirting boards and profiles in laminate and PVC floor plates.

the floor plate. The system doesn’t require any extra tools in order to adapt the profile so it is more attractive and cheaper than many other multifunctional profiles. It can cope with a height range from 0 to 14mm by means of an innovative co-extruded fastening pen. Since this profile has been developed at the request of Kronospan, Kronospan will enjoy exclusivity for some time.
Decruy NV in Houthulst is a reputable supplier for the international Furniture and DIY industry. Due to the growing demand for LVT and synthetic floors, Decruy started on a research project six years ago to produce skirting boards and profiles directly in LVT slabs with the help of the ‘folding’ technique. Frederik Decruy comments: ‘At the time, this concept was progressive and innovative. In those days, all skirting board manufacturers swore by the casing technique. Due to our experience in the Furniture industry, folding technology was more natural to us.’ They enjoyed great success, too. In the meantime, via patented technology, Decruy has made it possible to produce skirting boards and (multifunctional) floor profiles in LVT, vinyl rolls, DPl, HPL, CPL, DLP, engineered, and veneer floor panels. ‘and so, we can rightly say that we can offer something unique, and that’s also the reason why Kronospan, the biggest laminate manufacturer in the world, has chosen Decruy to produce their skirting boards and profiles.’
Kronospan multifunctional profile (DPL)

Warehousing en Picking
For Kronospan Decruy has developed a skirting board and a multifunctional profile, which are patented by Decruy N.V., for their collection of DPL floors as well as for their collection of digitally printed PVC floors. These profiles are produced directly from the relevant floor panels. ‘It was a challenge for us. Producing a skirting board from LVT or vinyl is easier since the top layers of those slabs are thermoplastic. With DPL we were faced with a very brittle top layer reinforced with corundum, so folding the top layer was critical. Moreover, Kronospan wanted a multifunctional 3-in-1 profile, which could cope with a height range from 0 to 14mm and was also suitable for LVT and vinyl. Yet we managed it and this, too, is patented by Decruy N.V.,’ Frederik Decruy tells us proudly.
Decruy multifunctional profile for Kronospan
Early in 2017, Decruy opened a complex of over 6000m² for warehousing and picking. Alexander Decruy concludes: ‘this investment means we can keep both end products and raw materials in stock and offer clients a real-time view of the current stock. People can also call upon us for our picking service whereby we are responsible for preparing their orders in detail within a short space of time.’
This is a profile which is sturdy and can be mounted and adapted quickly and easily. It also has an identical structure and colour as

DOMOTEX HANOVER 2017 Domotex Hanover – trend barometer for our sector Domotex takes place in Hanover from 14 to 17 January. The organisers of the trendsetting trade fair for textiles, semi-hard and elastic floors are expecting a big and extremely successful edition on the basis of visitors already registered and the extra stand space booked. The organisers are expecting 1350 exhibitors from over 60 countries. Dr. Andreas Gruchow, member of the Deutsche Messe executive board in Hanover is optimistic about Domotex 2017. He says, ‘Four months before the show, all the indicators suggested a top class edition with a very high international profile. In particular, multinational companies are investing heavily in their presence at Domotex. They’re booking extra stand space as a means of making a good start on their sales figures for 2017. Once again, Domotex is proving its value on the global flooring market and as a source of inspiration for the entire sector.’
Exhibitors from all corners of the world The diversity of floor solutions (mechanical and traditionally made carpets, parquet, laminate, outdoor terraces, and vinyl and design floors) is complemented at Domotex by a broad representation of companies from the machine, chemical, and other fitting technology sectors. As always, the origins of the exhibitors are extremely diverse and global. Apart from Germany, the major countries represented (in order of exhibitor registration numbers) are: Turkey, Belgium, India, China, the Netherlands, Iran, Italy, Egypt, and the United States.
Young Designer Trends Table More than ever before, Domotex is concentrating on the very latest trends in the flooring sector. That’s why, for the first time, the organisers have arranged a Young Designers Trends Table. Young talented designers from Germany, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, and Turkey are coming to present their latest ideas. Names already confirmed for this event are Bilge Nur Saltik (based in Istanbul and London), Jane Briggs and Christy Cole from Glasgow, Klaas Kuiken from Arnhem, Hanne Willmann (Berlin), and Victoria Wilmotte (Paris). Their designs and concepts are being presented under the leadership of industrial designer Stefan Diez in hall 9.
Innovations@Domotex The Innovations@Domotex presentation, which is gradually becoming a tradition, will be in halls 6, 9, and 17. In a separately marked zone visitors can see special displays with innovative floor solutions, which give visitors a rapid yet complete view of the latest innovations in the sector.

advantages of LED as compared to UV drying are many and diverse. For example, there is a 60% saving in energy costs as compared to UV. Since LED is a cold light, there are no problems as regards glueing, potential roughening up, or discolouration. The lamps don’t contain any mercury or calcium and only emit energy within the UVA reach, so there is no ozone emitted during the drying and setting process. This renders a suction unit as surplus to requirements because there aren’t any harmful gases. Moreover, LED lamps have an exceptionally long lifespan of over 10,000 hours, whereas UV lamps last only 800 to 1000 hours of use. Visit us in Hall 9, stand B12.

This oil gives wooden floors a strong and protective coat which sets completely and can be walked on within a few seconds. Moreover, the colours come perfectly into their own. The LED energy ensures that a unique and slightly sensitive composition of high-quality oils, waxes, resins, and additives ‘dries’ completely and sets in just a few seconds. The

The company will also discuss about the new solutions implemented in its range of products in order to reach growing markets, which needs affordable solutions. Vetedy is always listening to its customers, its partners; and is setting the goal to develop systems which are always efficient on technics and economics as well. BAU MUNICH 2017 Biggest European building show inspires our sector BAU takes place in Munich from 16 to 21 January. With over 2,000 exhibitors, 250,000 expected visitors (over 70,000 from abroad), and 17 trade fair halls with a surface area of 180,000 square metres, BAU offers a unique view of the current state of affairs in the construction industry. For the parquet, laminate, vinyl, and wall cladding sectors, too, there’s plenty to discover at BAU.
greater opportunities in creating a meeting point with potential clients of the construction industry in comparison with Domotex Hanover. Its new product range called MS Silane Technology is a step towards the future for the company for which tradition represents its strength. There are low modulus sealants, waterproofing membranes and multi-purpose silane glues among its products.

Bambeau will be presenting bamboo flooring, sheet goods, and bamboo polymer composite outdoor flooring planks at the BAU 2017 trade fair. Our BPC composite planks are the perfect solution for exterior flooring. They are made from a modern bamboo polymer composite (BPC) which contains at least 60 % bamboo fibres. Because composite planks keep growing more important, the outdoor range will take centre stage at BAU 2017 for our Cologne-based company, which specializes in bamboo materials. Modern brushed surface finishes match the increasing demand for natural textures. We offer planks that are coarsely brushed on one side, with the other side sanded in alternating grits, in two colours: Terra Brown and Ice Grey. Both surfaces look and feel excellent. However, the coarsely brushed surface has been subject to more attention. The newcomer for this trade show will be an outdoor flooring plank that is extruded in two colours, so that its finished texture resembles a worn, aged or even petrified wooden surface. This plank is available in a thickness of 20 mm and also fits the econudo fence profile. The econudo fence profile, which is made from high-quality aluminium, can be mounted on a fence in order to integrate the flooring planks into the fence segments. There are also matching spacer pieces which lock into the grooves on the planks and between fence posts, as well as post anchors with bolt-on plates or ground spikes. The recently extended accessory program, including aluminium substructure profiles and matching height-adjustable mounting feet, offers customers a wide range of mounting options for projects of any scale. Future-proof, environmentally friendly hybrid materials such as BPC are used more and more in gardening, thanks to their excellent durability and low maintenance requirements. Visit us in Hall A5 Booth 340.
Anyone who visits BAU certainly won’t be disappointed. The floor sector is amply represented in halls A5 and A6, which offer a wide range of new products, both in the elastic and textile floor segments. There also promises to be a wide and innovative range in the field of parquet, laminate, profiles and skirting boards, and fitting and applications. As is generally the case for the BAU trade fair, here, too, the stress is on the sustainable use of material and environmental-friendliness. As regards designs, visitors will be able to discover all new trends ranging from colours and structures to innovative decor styles with ‘photorealistic precision’.
Elastic ‘biofloor’ The BAU organisers have named a number of growing markets for the floor sector on which exhibitors are concentrating extra, namely housing construction, hotels, and gastronomy. It’s also noticeable that the trend towards the use of high-quality material is also emerging with regard to the choice of floor. That goes together with greater attention to health and renewable materials. Something which fits in with this trend is the presentation of a so called biofloor by the elastic floor trade federation. This biofloor is produced largely from polyurethane and consists for 99% of renewable natural raw materials. Exhibitors are also paying a lot of attention to easy maintenance and cleaning.
Modernisation and renovation Just as in the parquet sector, the broader construction industry is paying a lot of attention to modernisation and renovation. Both in Germany and most European countries there is a big need for modernisation of the existence building heritage. In this respect insulation, energy-efficiency, and integration into communication networks and sustainable energy grids essential. A good number of exhibitors will be concentrating on this theme and presenting their very latest solutions.

Decospan (BE)
DECOSPAN INSPIRES THE INTERIOR INDUSTRY The manufacturing industry goes through tough times nowadays. Since the crisis of 2008/2009 many companies have, whether or not forced, closed the doors. Also the timber industry was hit hard. Yet Decospan succeeded in recent years to set a strong course and generate record figures year after year. We searched and found clarification in Menen, right in the heart of the Belgian wood industry.
Constantly innovating and startle the market with bold concepts, that's what Decospan is good at. The family owned company, being the European market leader in veneer processing has become the benchmark in the market. Decospan offers both custommade solutions as predefined collections. Thus giving shape to the mission and vision of the company: developing and manufacture products based on wood veneers, and so ultimately increase the accessibility of this precious raw material. The wood consultants assist anyone with questions about the use of wood in an interior design to the right product according to the customer requirements. In addition to the endless possibilities in the
34
Floor Forum International 85
area of wood veneered panels for interior applications, Decospan also offers limitless solutions for wooden flooring. On one hand thanks to Par-ky: a friendly, high-quality wooden floor with an ultrastrong core of HDF, the UniclicÂŽ system for a fast and easy floating installation and 8 layers of lacquer, which protect the top layer of real wood and make Par-ky easy to maintain. Every Par-ky board has a top layer of thin wood. That's why they look like solid parquet. But the difference is the use of the raw material: by slicing it into thin flitches the use of wood is optimized. Next to the well-known 0.6mm veneer flooring, Par-ky is also available with a 2 and 3.2mm top layer. The Deluxe+06, Royal+20 and Twist+06 collections have a
2mm layer of cork on the back. This makes them quiet to walk on, just like a solid, glued down wooden floor. On the other hand there is Cabbani: Thanks to the "Ă la carte" system a personalized floor can easily be put together. There is the choice between three dimensions with a core of HDF or birch plywood combined with a top layer of 2, 3.2 or 5.5mm European oak. There are two basic wood qualities: "Select" includes a nice mix of structures and exhibits the typical characteristics of real wood, without pronounced knots. "Rustic" brings nature into your home with a rural floor including knots and typical wood characteristics being even more distinctly present. To finish the product, there is a choice between oil or varnish, combined with a wide range of fashionable colors. Cabbani can be installed either floating (HDF) as well as fully glued down (HDF and plywood). In the Veneerhouse in Menen both product ranges can be admired. During a visit to this impressive inspiration center wood veneer can be experienced in all possible ways. You'll meet up in an architectural context in which many high quality modern interior products were combined. Visits are by appointment only, from Monday to Friday. At Domotex Decospan opens an experience booth, the largest the company has ever had, at which one can get acquainted with the new collections of Par-ky and Cabbani as each year new references and colors are officially introduced to the market there for the first time. So, again more than enough reasons to travel to Hanover and visit booth nr. H9/A46. www.par-ky.com / www.cabbani.com / www.decospan.com

Subfloors
FLOOR HEATING AND WOODEN FLOORS SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS WITH THE USE OF A SUBFLOOR
Photo – Proline
If we fit a wooden floor onto a screed where floor heating has been installed, the BBRI (Belgian Building Research Institute) recommends glueing the floor directly onto the covering floor. The thickness of the wooden floor obviously affects the spread of the heat. The BBRI has a rule of thumb for this. For a covering floor thickness with heat-emissionelements of at least 50mm, and if no account is taken of the heat resistance of the glue, the theoretical recommended maximum thickness of the wooden floor is 22mm for hardwood (any subfloor included) and 15mm for softwood.
Limiting resistance ‘Offering resistance’ actually means obstructing or delaying the free passage of ‘something’. The definition of ‘heat resistance’ is actually nothing more than that. It has given rise to the age-old misunderstanding that floor heating and wooden floors can hardly be reconciled with each other, if at all. After all, wood has the reputation of being an outstanding thermal insulator. For decades, that fact alone has prevented countless people from opting for the combination of parquet and floor heating. The myth in circulation was that it was an ‘either/or’ decision. Nowadays, we know that nothing could be further from the truth, and the success of floor heating in Scandinavian countries, which are also reputed as ‘wood builders’, is testimony to that. We will now explain the formulas on the basis of which we can assess (and calculate) the suitability of floor types for floor heating/cooling.
Multi-layer - a trend! Multi-layer floors have long since overtaken solid wood floors in volume. As compared to solid wood floors, they have several major assets, not
36
Floor Forum International 85
least the fact that they ensure greater stability with less thickness, and that is beneficial for renovation. The greater stability is mainly the result of the (high-tech) floor structure. Floor heating needs a stable floor. We know the behaviour of wood is affected by atmospheric conditions, including temperature. Another feature, besides the emergence of multi-layer, is the growing tendency to fit floors floating. With floating fitting a subfloor will be needed in most cases for diverse reasons (e.g. sound insulation or levelling). It is clear that, if we fit a subfloor, we actually raise the aforementioned ‘resistance’. And so, with floating wooden floors and also with veneer and laminate, a floor’s suitability for floor heating is assessed in combination with a subfloor.
The heat resistance There’s also a rule of thumb to assess a floor’s suitability for floor heating. This considers elements such as coefficient conductivity and floor thickness (which together determine heat resistance).
Coefficient conductivity Good coefficient conductivity contributes to the energy spread and therefore to the efficiency of the heating system. The subfloor must have a higher coefficient conductivity than the finish floor. Good values for het conductivity are 0.05W/m-k or higher for wood and laminate and 0.04 w/m-k for vinyl.
The thickness of the floor Another important factor is the thickness of the material. Even very good conductive materials can have an insulating effect if they are too thick. Thicknesses above 3.5mm are usually not recommended because the final heat resistance would then be too high.
Heat resistance
Styrofoam provides protection from damp and, on the other hand, it removes any possible unevenness or faults in the covering floor. The metallised surface ensures excellent heat control. The subfloor has a sound absorption of 20-23dB.
The coefficient conductivity and the thickness of the material together constitute the heat resistance: The heat resistance (Rm value) is then defined as the proportion of the material thickness (m) to the coefficient conductivity (lambda). The heat resistance is expressed in ms.K/W. A rule of thumb for determining the suitability of a subfloor for floor heating is as follows: - Permitted resistance for floor heating as extra heating = 0.18m².K/W - Permitted resistance for floor heating as main heating = 0.14 m².K/W.
The suitable subfloor
Proline
There are lots of reasons why we can be obliged to fit a subfloor (or intermediate floor) before fitting the floor covering. Levelling can be a reason, whilst protection from damp or acoustic refinement can be other reasons. Two major parameters are decisive for choosing an intermediate floor. Obviously, there’s the aforementioned heat resistance, but, in addition, the behaviour of the material itself at higher temperatures is vitally important. We call this the under-heat performance. After all, some materials lose key properties at high temperatures due to the structure, composition, or density of the materials. For example, certain materials with a low density (e.g. PU or PE) can lose properties under high temperatures over time. Since they lose thickness and impression resistance, this can affect their sound insulation. Producers have de facto (due to the heat resistance) several subfloors which can be fitted on floor heating. Recently, thanks to the success of the combination of both, makers have developed subfloors specially for floor heating. This is also stated clearly on the packet.
Proline also points out the importance of heat resistance. The difference between a suitable subfloor for floor heating and an unsuitable subfloor depends on that heat resistance. Obviously, there are other demands made of the subfloor such as in the areas of sound and high pressure stability. With the emergence of the range of subfloors, Proline now works together closely with top producers. The company also offers subfloors for all types of floors and, if necessary, in small quantities. At present, they are putting the finishing touches to a subfloor for LVT. As regards floor heating they specifically mention PROBASE PU-M, PROBASE LVT PS+ (high pressure stability) PROBASE EPS, PROBASE PE, PE-X, the PROBASE Cork, and PU Cork. Some of those products have an integrated damp screen.
What’s on the market? Bona Bona offers a number of sophisticated subfloor solutions. The Bona U300 is a subfloor of bound cork-rubber granules. The U300 can be used as a subfloor for parquet, laminate, and other floor coverings. The material helps to muffle noise. When this subfloor is glued to parquet, the generated tensions in the parquet are reduced and diverted to the subfloor. The Bona U310 is a polyester film which reduces tension and is glued onto glued parquet and laminate floors. U310 is a problem solver for technically doubtful subfloors: it is easy to cut and fit, permeable, flexibly linked, with an extra structural height of only 1.5-2mm, including glue thickness. The Bona U340 is a polyester fibre-plate subfloor. This subfloor reduces the pressure on the final floor such as ceramic tiles, natural stone, wooden floors, etc. The high compressive strength means that the U340 can cope with heavy pressures (up to 5.0kN/m²). It is suitable for use in both household and commercial rooms. A plus point is that it reduces the acoustic sound insulation for all floors considerably. U 340 is easy to cut into shape and fit and is not affected by damp and mould.
Ladix It is the substrate that indicates whether or not a subfloor is suitable for floor heating/cooling. To this end Ladix has its Thermos Air Styrofoam subfloor (3mm thick). If you fit this subfloor under laminate, it guarantees a longer lifespan. On the one hand, Thermos Air

Sekisui Alveo The subfloors from Sekisui Alveo in the Alveo pro range (see the Alveo flooring web site) are suitable for floor heating in combination with laminate floors up to 9mm. These are high-performance branched polyolefin foams in a thickness of 3mm or less. The size of the laminate subfloors is 2mm with a heat resistance between 0.054 and 0.058 whereby they are sometimes also suitable for floor cooling with 6 or 7mm laminate. For click parquet the R-values are higher precisely because they are also thicker so that the importance of a subfloor with heat resistance as low as possible with floor heating is even greater. Usually, the same subfloors are used here as for laminate. For click LVT floors highly stable and extremely thin subfloors are a necessity to protect the click systems in the long term. The use of conventional laminate subfloors is an absolute ‘no go’ here. The fact that subfloors for click LVT are extremely thin in any case and also the floorboards are usually only 4 to 6mm thick means that the majority of these floor systems are already suitable for the combination with floor heating. However, the recorded R-values of subfloor and floor are often already low enough for the combination with a floor cooling system. However, Sekisui Alveo advises clients always to ask producers about the real R-value if they cannot find it on the product label so that they can do the calculations themselves.

Trends in bamboo floors
BAMBOO FOLLOWS CURRENT TRENDS INTERIOR TRENDS DETERMINE THE RANGE FOR 100%
Photo – BambooTouch®
We’ve said it before. If a certain type of floor is available in wood, you’ll find it in bamboo as well. For example, all types of parquet, solid wood and multi-layer, and almost all existing patterns like end grain blocks, strips, industrial parquet, and so also exist in bamboo. Bamboo stalks are converted into panels via an ingenious production process which undergirds the almost infinite array of possibilities. Some aspects of that process (e.g. the cutting method or drying method) also have an ongoing effect on what the final floor looks like. As for trends, they, too, follow the rest of the ‘world’.
Some key concepts As we’ve said, the bamboo production method has a direct effect on the look of the floorboards. To sum up, bamboo is cut into strips which
40
Floor Forum International 85
undergo an entire process to convert them into panels. For the drying, the strips can undergo another special treatment which is designed to burn any sugars still present and kill micro-organisms. Under this treatment process the strips are boiled in a bath for a few hours. During this boiling process, it is necessary in many cases to add a small content of water peroxide to stimulate the process. During this phase, the difference emerges between ‘natural’ (extremely light) and ‘caramel’ (light brown), something which recurs in the collections of floor producers. There are two ways of glueing the strips. With the first method the strips are pressed horizontally next to each other and glued together under high pressure. The result is a panel or plank with the clearly visible typical bamboo gnarls. Panels created in this way are called plain pressed. With the other method the strips are pressed sideways so that we get a more slender structure with the bamboo gnarls being less visible. Panels which are pressed sideways are called side pressed.
Parquet after the event We know that bamboo isn’t a type of wood, but the look of bamboo is sometimes certainly comparable to that of a wooden floor. Trends on the parquet and wooden floor markets (and also on the laminate market) also seem to be in evidence in bamboo.
Oak in the classic forms The similarity between side pressed bamboo and oak is striking, and even a little misleading for anyone who isn’t a connoisseur. In the ‘natural’ version you get the appearance of sandpapered and untreated oak, and in the caramel version, too, there is a similarity with coloured oak (somewhat darker). With some trademarks this design is an entry-level model, but it is also proving very popular for its decorative look. It was only to be expected that a distressed look would also spread to bamboo and here, too, it’s rapidly becoming a trend. It’s not only the extremely dark designs (smoked effects), but also mechanical operations such as brushing, hand-scraped, and such like that are making their entry. And so, bamboo no longer has only smooth finishes, but also finishes where the pattern of the decor really can be felt.
Colour makes its entrance The distinction between natural (light) and caramel (creamy to bream) is found in most collections from various suppliers/manufacturers. However, side pressed and plain pressed (or ‘horizontal’ and ‘vertical’) are also coming back. Apart from the ranges of colours which already existed with caramel and natural, the number of colours for bamboo floors has increased vastly. Bamboo Colour is making its entrance and then the possibilities become endless. The range varies from playful and youthful colours to the imitation of darker wood sorts such as wenge and panga panga. What also stands out in the colour pallet are the shades which are emerging in the interior, namely white, grey, and black. Whether we are talking about modern or extremely classic interiors, these shades are generally proving extremely popular and they are also appearing in bamboo collections.
sturdy, and affordable type of flooring. Bamboo has developed into the top ecological choice for lots of people who choose consciously to build or renovate ecologically and with an eye to the future. And so, our bamboo floors are becoming increasingly popular, partly because our finishes strive for a natural aspect and partly because we also lightly carbonate our bamboo parquet floors. In fact, we try to give our bamboo floors the light tints which you see in oak wood. A major strong point typical of our bamboo floors is the dimensioning. Since Lalegno guarantees stable parquet, we’ve chosen here, too, for a three-layer construction whereby we can offer bamboo floors with a length of 2200mm and width of 189mm! Since Lalegno bamboo floors don’t have a bevelled edge, you also get the impression that the parquet runs over the entire room. It is mainly the vertically pressed bamboo floors which are extremely popular at present. The slender lined pattern of these floors looks very trendy. The design look of the 15V BAMBOO LANCERO and the 15V BAMBOO MALECON and the light colour tints given to the lightly carbonated fibres certainly appeals to the public.
MOSO
A selection from the range BambooTouch® Belgian bamboo floor specialist BambooTouch® has seen a growing demand for these floors, yet it grieves them to see so many vendors still selling mediocre quality floors. BambooTouch® stands for quality and is the only supplier selling bamboo floors which are all in colour. In particular, it is the high-density pressed bamboo floors which appeal most to current market trends and this, moreover, with a unique Brinell hardness 125% greater than that of oak. They recently launched a range of extra hard bamboo floors in 22cm-wide planks which look like oak planks: a smart way to combine ecological and technical benefits of bamboo with classical oak look. All floors can be supplied unfinished, oiled, or varnished.

Sanding machines : part 3
SANDPAPERING IN DEPTH EDGE SANDERS PROVIDE THE ULTIMATE FINISH
Photo – Devomat Industries
What do the edges of a room and staircase steps have in common? Staircase steps are actually edges. After all, each staircase step is joined to the upright steps so that together they form an angle. That’s precisely why sandpapering old stairs is no easy task. Edge sanders stand out in different fields from other sanding machines in the floor fitter’s arsenal of machinery. Firstly, they are different in terms of shape and weight.
42
Floor Forum International 85
Manageable weight What is the importance of weight to a sanding machine? Depending on the task to be carried out, the sanding machine will ‘carry more weight’. Just about the first sandpapering task to be completed (apart from preparing the substrate) consists of levelling a parquet subfloor (usually oak mosaic). That first sandpapering removes millimetres of solid oak. It will be clear that you need not only a good number of revolutions per minute and a powerful motor, but also, and especially, a heavy
machine which ensures that the required pressure is exerted on the floor. Amongst belt sanders we therefore find weights of 60kg for hire machines and 80kg for professional machines. Rotary disc sanders, amongst other things, have to remove the traces of the belt sander. Those rotary disc sanders have a weight of about 30kg. Edge and stair sanders weigh between 8 and 13kg. It is clear that heavier machines would be difficult to operate on stairs. The weight of the machine is just enough to supply the necessary pressure for efficient sandpapering.
Refined design The spoon shape of edge sanders has probably originated from the ‘reality’ of heating radiators. Once heating appliances are no longer fitted on the floor, but are hung on the wall, you get places which are ‘difficult to reach’, at least as far as parquet sanding machines are concerned. We’re all familiar with the sturdy shape of the endless belt sander, which obviously has a minimal necessary height and with which it is therefore impossible to sandpaper under a radiator. The same applies to professional rotary disc sander machines. It was probably the result of a bright idea that ‘someone’ has added an extra piece to these machines: The spoon has seen the light of day!
What’s on the market? Alvaket
and Bona Edge XL, all easy to connect to the Bona DCS70 for dust-free sandpapering. The Bona Combi Edge is the most suitable tool for stairs, certainly in view of the light weight and flexibility of the machine for efficient sandpapering and thanks to the ultimate LED lights which are fitted to the machine. The sanding arms are easy to change; the 330mm sanding arm has an excellent reach under deep staircase steps (also ideal for under radiators!). Apart from the fusion between Bona and Künzle and Tasin, in which the best features of both trademarks are combined and will eventually lead to a new generation of sanding machines, there haven’t been any recent technical renewals or modernisations. What we can say is that the addition to the Bona range of the ceramic sandpapering materials and the Bona Diamond Abrasives has created new ways of achieving sanding results. Ceramic sandpapering materials ensure that even the hardest floors can be sandpapered and finishes can be removed. The Diamond Abrasives are mainly a problem solver for renovating pre-fab/UV lacquered floors.
Devomat Industries
Removing thick coats of lacquer, certainly along edges, is a time-consuming and very tiring job. With the easy-to-grip GECKO - FLEX, which has been developed by and for floor fitters, removing lacquer and paint residue as well as traditional edge sanding is no longer a problem. This flexible edge sander is also ideal for stairs and landings. Thanks to the machine’s well-placed handles and light weight, the Gecko Flex is easy to handle. Dust-free sandpapering is possible thanks to the directly connected dust suction unit, so flying dust is absorbed by the adjustable brush crown around the sandpapering surface. The Gecko Flex is equipped with a sound 1500W FLEX motor and the number of revolutions per minute can be set between 1,400 and 4,200. Another asset is the completely flat sanding sole, which helps to prevent unwanted dents. Two sanding soles are supplied with the machine: 1 disc with 2 pin keys and 1 disc with Velcro. Obviously, sanding edges can always still be done in the way in which floor fitters have done it all their careers, namely with a traditional edge sander such as the Frank Gecko Star. However, the difference is that this machine is completely up to date, adapted on all surfaces to the demands of professionals who use such tools every day.
Bona Bona has several edge sanders in its assortment: Bona Combi Edge, Bona Dual Edge (with contraflow 100mm sanding discs!), Bona Edge,
Deva Strong is a sturdy and silent edge sander for lengthy work. It is equipped with a low-maintenance single-phase motor (no coal brushes). A fast switchover from the ‘short’ to the ‘long’ (radiator) version is possible. The appliance is fitted with sidelights. Each rotating component is balanced to prevent vibrations. The drive plate is covered with a 3mm thick layer of felt and operates at a speed of 3,000 revolutions per minute to achieve light sandpapering without making any marks on the floor. Since the machine has a sturdy design, it’s not necessary to exert any pressure during the work. A simple sliding motion is all you need to carry out the work without damaging the surfaces. Producers of substrate levellers
GOOD PREPARATION IS HALF THE JOB SELF-FLOWING LEVELLERS FOR THE PERFECT SUBSTRATE
Photo – Pallmann
When wooden floors were still the norm, the question of a perfectly flat surface didn’t really arise. If part of a support beam sagged down deeper, it was simply a matter of using a wedge to provide a local remedy. However, when the day came that floors started to rest on a subfloor or intermediate floor, whether or not floors were glued, a ‘perfectly level’ floor became a sheer necessity for several reasons. In the case of glued solid wood or multilayer floors, it’s all about the quality of the glueing. In the case of thin and flexible floor coverings there is a need to eliminate any unevenness, which could still be visible once the floor is fitted. This article sheds some light on the matter.
not the case with a screed. That’s why we speak of a ‘covering floor’. In the covering floor we can eliminate all sorts of wires and utility items, which are fitted on the bearing floor. With the screed we raise the floor to the eventual height which is suitable for fitting the floor covering. To sum up, the structure of the division between two floors is as follows:
First, there’s the screed
The importance of a qualitative screed lies in the fact that the quality of the final floor is determined partly by the screed and the structure under the floor. A levelling layer or subfloor (4 and 5) usually serve to correct or supplement the screed.
If a floor rests ‘fully’ on a subfloor, everything starts with the screed. It doesn’t matter what subject is being debated, good foundations are always necessary, whether we’re talking about building work or a line of reasoning. In some respects the screed is the foundation of a floor covering. What is actually the purpose of the screed? It is important to consider that in construction terms the screed isn’t a ‘floor’. After all, a floor has a constructive, supportive, and divisive function. That is

covering floors. Cement is made from limestone by a process of breaking, sifting, heating, and adding certain raw materials. An important feature of cement is that it is hydraulic. This means that it reacts to water; it sets and components form which can then no longer be dissolved in water. And so, cement-bound materials are not sensitive to moisture. This means that mechanical properties such as strength and stiffness do not change under the influence of moisture. This makes cement-bound covering floors ideal for use in damp rooms, or even outdoors. A sturdy and serviceable screed has to be prepared in the correct dose. A good dose is usually 300 to 320kg of cement to each cubic metre of sand. If you don’t add enough cement to the sand, the screed will never be strong enough and will generally stay powdery. That’s not a good basis for glueing, that’s for sure. If we assume that most new screeds (in new buildings) are mixed by machine, we can be fairly sure that problems will tend to occur more with renovation.
Levelling … in what way? Levelling isn’t always necessary. Sometimes an ‘intermediate floor’ or a ‘subfloor’ can be enough. However, levelling is often necessary if, for glueing floor coverings (thick or thin) or for floating fitting of rather thin (flexible) floor coverings, the demands which are usually put on the screed cannot be met and fitting a subfloor on its own is not enough to solve the problem.
Demands made of the screed Some demands put upon the screed are absolutely essential for parquet floor fitters. Those demands usually relate to the perceptible and visible features (faults) of the screed. Important properties, amongst other things, are the compressive strength and pressure resistance. In the Dutch NEN standard 2741:2001/A1 chart, the resistance against the impression caused by a falling load is deployed as a measure for the quality of the cement covering floor. On the basis of the impression which arises from testing (BRE screed test as set out in the English BS 8204.1), cement covering floors are put in class A (industry), class B (offices), and class C (homes). The cement covering floor will have to meet certain demands, depending on the purpose for which the cement covering floor is fitted. In Germany the cement covering floor has to meet the demands set out in the DIN standards nos. 18356, 18365, and 18367. This means that it has sufficient bearing strength and is sufficiently flat, clean, and dry. It must not have any cracks. Too many cracks in the covering floor are an indication that it doesn’t have enough bearing strength. A sandy covering floor or a covering floor which hasn’t been fitted properly has to be demolished and replaced.
When is levelling necessary and why? It might be necessary to level the subfloors in order to level off any unevenness which cannot be tolerated. This prevents any hollow places under the floors to be fitted and it creates a subfloor which is uniformly absorbent (very important for working with dispersion adhesives). What is absolutely essential for fitting flexible floor coverings is a subfloor which is smooth and completely flat in order to ensure that the least unevenness doesn’t become visible on the surface of the floor covering fitted. Here it also becomes clear that there are differences as regards levelling agents. With wooden floors you use levellers which are clearly stronger and often rougher. The levellers under LVT or other flexible floor coverings are usually very slender and only achieve standard strength values. By contrast, levellers for wooden floors achieve very high strength values.

Primers and screed reinforcers Often it is necessary to carry out certain treatments on the covering floor before levelling in order to be sure that the levelling agent adheres properly to the screed itself. The most important products here are adhesion primers and screed reinforcers. The screed has to be equally porous everywhere before the levelling agent is applied. This can be achieved with a primer. Screed reinforcers are deployed whenever the screed doesn’t have the strength required for coping with wood and glue, for instance. For example, it is absolutely impossible to glue a floor onto a powdery screed.
Levellers There are essentially two types of levelling agents, namely self-flowing and stable. Both are necessary, depending on the application. Using self-flowing levellers to bridge a difference in height makes no sense at all; similarly, there is no point in using stable material for a full surface. Furthermore, the type of floor to be glued is important, as we have said above. Secondary criteria can be of a technical nature, such as, for instance, the drying time and, certainly not to be forgotten, the cost price of the materials used.
A selection from the market range Adesiv Adesiv promotes its cement-based levelling compound Pavilast R for levelling floors. This is done according to the following fitting instructions. Always check the dampness of the bottom layer with the correct instruments. The bottom layer must not contain any damp, and it has to be compact and free of loose particles such as limestone, residual dust, oils, or wax. When the water (6.5kg) reaches room temperature, pour the powder (25kg) onto it in a clean bucket and mix them using the electric stirrer until you get a uniform paste with no lumps which is thick enough to be spread. Leave this paste for a few minutes before applying it with the correct smooth stainless steel spatula (American). Before you apply the paste, always check the dampness of the covering floor, which should be <2% (<0.5% for anhydrite). The room temperature has to be between 15 and 25°C, whilst the relative moisture mustn’t exceed 75%. If the substrate has loose particles, it is better to treat it first with Pavilast K. To ensure easy spreading, you can add ADECON K500 to Pavilast R. Adesiv recommends that you use Adesiv products for the glueing.
Bijlard International Egaline 12 has been part of the Bijlard International Floor assortment since the start of this year. There had been an increasing market demand for a strong and affordable levelling compound. With the Egaline 12, Bijlard has supplied the floor industry with a quality product. The product is easy to use and is supplied in packs of 25kg. It is obviously perfect in combination with other Bijlard Floor products, such
as the MS Floor and PU2K. Egaline 12 takes only two hours to set!! It is ideal for use with floor heating and cooling. Egaline 12 can be used for levelling and flattening cement, covering, and concrete floors for indoors. A thickness of up to 10mm can be achieved in one working session. Consumption is 1.5kg per m² for a layer which is 1mm thick. It is essential that the substrate is prepared so that you get a 100% result. Applying a primer is necessary for preventing excessive suction and achieving a uniformly dry result. Egaline 12 is an outstanding substrate not only for glueing wooden floors, but also for fitting PVC floors with no problem at all.
Bona If a floor isn’t flat enough or smooth enough to meet floor fitting requirements, it has to be levelled. This can vary with the type of floor. Traditional parquet is less critical, but for PVC the opposite applies. If a screed is too sandy and the application of a primary yields no improvement, the only choice left is a new screed. Obviously, the screed also has to be dry. Otherwise a damp screen will be needed first. There is a difference between levellers which are used, for instance, with carpet and/or floating fitted parquet floors and levellers which are used for parquet. Wood is a dynamic material and causes more tension on the leveller. Therefore, the leveller needs to have greater tensile strength. Levellers from Bona are obviously suitable for glueing a wooden floor. Bona has levellers which are based on cement and levellers based on gypsum. Generally speaking, floors can be fitted onto the levellers after 24 hours. With the cement-bound leveller there is a drying time of 24 hours for a thickness of 10mm, but for anything thicker than that the drying time is at least 72 hours. With the gypsum-bound leveller there is a drying time of 24 hours for a thickness of 3mm. Each millimetre in excess of that raises the drying time by 24 hours. The best-seller at Bona is the H600, a Universal leveller for fitting both parquet and elastic floor coverings. Bona H605 is a calcium sulphate levelling agent for elastic and flexible floor coverings.
Bostik The most important reason for levelling is to make the substrate flat enough. The screed has to meet at least the following criteria: permanently dry (with no danger of rising damp) - clean – no cracks – sufficiently compression resistant and tensile. The choice of the leveller depends on the substrate and the usage of the floor afterwards and less so the type of floor covering. Depending on the application, you opt for ‘fibre-reinforced’ for levelling wooden substrates, ‘fast-drying’ if the job needs to be finished the same day, or ‘increased compressive strength’ if used as a top coat. A primer is almost always necessary.
The function of the primer is to reduce the porosity of the substrate, as an adhesion bridge with the leveller and the primer you avoid the formation of air craters which can be ‘drawn’ afterwards in, for example, thin uniform PVC floor covering. As a standard, it is possible to glue onto a leveller the day afterwards (after sandpapering) in thicknesses of up to a maximum of 10mm. With fast-drying levellers that can still be done on the same day, but that applies only for carpet or PVC. For parquet and linoleum Bostik recommends that you don’t glue onto fast-drying levellers until at least 24 hours later. The best-seller here is Niboplan DIRECT. This is a C50 - F10 leveller (pressure resistance > 50N/mm² and it can therefore cope with high loads afterwards – This product can be used as an industrial floor (top coat).
Devomat/PCI At Devomat they believe that the aim of levelling is to make the screed floor flat and rigid. Applying a levelling compound creates a flat floor service. Levelling can be necessary, for example, after the removal of an existing floor covering where the screed has been damaged or floor heating pipes form an obstruction. After levelling, it is then possible to fit tiles, parquet, laminate, or a soft floor covering (such as linoleum, vinyl, carpet, or cork) with no problem at all. The suitability of a leveller depends, amongst other things, on the substrate e.g. screed, concrete, anhydrite, or wood. The finish (e.g. carpet, parquet, ceramic tiles, or epoxy floor) also determines which levelling compound is suitable. Applying the correct primer to the screed will help the levelling compound to flow better and set in the right place. This is absolutely essential for fitting soft floor coverings such as cork, vinyl, linoleum, carpet, or PVC. Devomat presents several levelling compounds under the name PCI Periplan. The type PCI Periplan Extra contains fibres and has been refined with polymer, so there is perfect adhesion to the substrate and any tensions are absorbed. This PCI Periplan Extra is the perfect levelling compound for fitting onto a tile floor and/or a wooden floor. Obviously, it can also be applied to a traditional screed floor.

The roughness of the surface and the flatness of a (covering) floor as well as the type of floor covering determined whether or not a floor should be levelled. In practice, for example, carpet tiles are often fixed directly onto a covering floor, whereas the advice with a PVC, linoleum, or rubber floor covering will always be to apply a leveller. A sand-cement covering floor is recommended for levelling with a cement-bound levelling compound and an anhydrite floor with a gypsum-bound levelling compound. Furthermore, the choice of leveller to be applied is also determined by the application/ use of the floor. Compressive strength and fracture strength also play a major part. A primer is applied as a bonding bridge on smooth/sealed substrates, but also with strongly absorbent substrates or as a damp screen. It may also be desirable to apply a primer to combat unfavourable weather conditions. It is possible to glue directly onto the levelling layer. In practice, the levelling layer is often sandpapered in advance with a 100-120 wire mesh. Forbo Eurocol presents the cement-bound 990 Europlan Direct or the gypsum-bound 920 Europlan Alphy.
F.Ball
Levellers are an important part of the total floor structure. If the screed shows any defects, a levelling agent usually solves the problem. The floor covering determines to a certain extent which subfloor is suitable. For instance, flexible floor coverings require a perfectly even surface. For wooden floors F. Ball recommends a strong and fast-drying subfloor. Obviously, the substrate (anhydrite/cement) also helps to determine which leveller is suitable. A primer will often have to be deployed with a view to obtaining uniform porosity. After the primer has been applied, F. Ball recommends a waiting time of 20 to 30 minutes. The various levelling agents from F. Ball have been developed for specific floor solutions. A wide range of floor types can be served using Stopgap 1200 Pro, which is a high-performance leveller. Stopgap Fast Track 30 is a fast-drying variant. This dries after 30 minutes and the floor can be laid after 45 minutes.

Lecol For Lecol it is essential that the subfloor for flexible floor coverings is absolutely flat. Otherwise any unevenness is visible. Lecol believes that Wakol Z615, which is used for parquet and wooden floors, is absolutely ideal. However, Lecol also has other quality products which can be used, for instance, on a PVC floor: Wakol A620, Wakol Z630, Wakol Z645, Wakol Z670, Wakol Z675, Wakol Z680, and Wakol Z715. The type of substrate is obviously important for making the right choice (anhydrite, sand-cement, tiles, or wood). All those levellers are suitable for glueing Lecol and are self-levelling so that flat substrates are guaranteed. The basic ingredient is cement. Fitting parquet is normally possible on the next day, but Lecol also offers a leveller which is dry after just a few hours. The best-seller in this field is the Wakol Z615. This is dust-free and highly fluid (best flow properties available on the market)!
RUBIO EASYFLOW (-F) LEVELLING COMPOUNDS Rubio® EasyFlow levelling compounds can be used universally and are ideal as preparation for installing parquet and other hard and soft floor coverings. After priming, the levelling compounds can be used on any porous (mineral) surface, such as cement-bound and anhydride subfloors (screed), but also on non-porous surfaces, such as ceramic tiles. Rubio EasyFlow must be applied to a well-prepared sub-floor that is dust- and grease-free. Rubio® EasyFlow levelling compound is available in two versions: Rubio EasyFlow for levelling from 3 to 15 mm and Rubio EasyFlow-F for levelling up to 30 mm and for floors with floor heating. The Rubio® EasyFlow levelling compounds are unique because they are mixed easily without raising dust and provide a homogeneous result. In addition, they need less water than traditional levelling compounds, so they dry faster. After being levelled with Rubio EasyFlow(-F), the floor is ready to be covered with tiles, laminate, carpet or, of course, parquet. In addition to Rubio EasyFlow (-F) levelling compounds, there is a complete Rubio EasyBond range that includes a universal parquet glue, primers and tools for preparing the surface. You don’t even have to think, from preparation of the surface to finishing the parquet. With Rubio Monocoat you can do it all.
Rectavit LVT always needs a perfectly flat substrate, but the mechanical demands made by a glued LVT floor on the substrate are not as severe as with a glued parquet floor. The swelling and shrinking forces of a (solid) parquet floor are much greater, so the levelling compound onto which material is glued must have sufficient cohesive strength. And so, the correct leveller depends on a number of parameters. Rectavit Egaline 600, however, is a universal and high-quality cement-bound and synthetic leveller which is ideal for levelling and flattening indoor floors with unevenness up to 15mm. This universal leveller can be walked on after barely one hour and (depending on substrate and layer thickness) a finish can be applied after two to three hours! After the leveller has set, you can apply the top layer (parquet, linoleum, cork, PVC foil, carpet, etc. Due to its rapid binding time, this product is ideal for renovations and applications which need to be finished within one day. It is also ideal for use with floor heating.
Pallmann Creating a flatter surface, eliminating differences in height, and improving the quality of the surface are all good reasons for using a leveller. A screed which is not up to scratch can be improved by using products which are geared to each other. Some components aren’t 100% compatible. In some cases a new screed may be unavoidable. As regards the deployment of levelling agents, you also have to consider the correct harmonising solution. Demands regarding fluidity, strength, and flatness vary from floor to floor. At Pallmann they believe that a primer will generally be applied prior to levelling, generally as a ‘bridge’ between substrate and, for instance, the glueing process. The floor can generally be glued directly onto the levelled screed. The best-seller at Pallmann is the self-flowing leveller Pallmann P25.
Soudal Soudal presents the Levelling Mass VE 50. This Levelling Mass VE 50 is a cement-based and synthetic flattening mass with outstanding self-levelling properties. This product shrinks and pulls very little and guarantees an excellent grip on the hardened surface. The Levelling Mass VE 50 makes layer thicknesses of 1-15mm possible. The product is ready for use after about five minutes stirring and has a spreading time of 20 minutes. After about two to four hours, the hardened substrate suitable for the next operation. Depending on the laying thickness, the surface can be walked on after about one hour. PVC and
rubber can be fitted after three hours, whilst for linoleum, parquet, or cork you usually have to wait 12 hours. How do you apply the product? Add Levelling Mass VE50 for mixing to the required quantity of cold and pure tap water. Mix carefully using a mixer and drill for at least four minutes to produce a uniform mixture. Allow the created quantity of levelling mass to mature for a maximum of five minutes and stir again. Pour the levelling mass onto the floor and spread it using a trowel or blade. If necessary, a second layer of levelling mass can be applied as soon as the First layer can be walked on. If you wait any longer than that, it is advisable to use Soudal WBPR-11P.
Stauf Stauf offers various solutions for levelling floors. Stauf SPP-95 is a high-quality leveller based on cement. The product is self-levelling and can be pumped. It gives a perfectly smooth surface which is strong and flexible. Stauf SPP-95 reduces floor tension and dries rapidly. It has low emissions (EC-IR plus). SSP-Rapid is also recommended for all uses and very fast-drying. IBOLA AS is also a cement-based product (EC-IR plus) for elastic floors, textiles, and wooden floors. This product, too, has good flow properties and dries rapidly. IBOLA GS is a universal levelling agent based on calcium sulphate hemihydrate which can also be deployed for multi-layer parquet. Finally, IBOLA RM is a stable repair and levelling agent (EC-IR plus) which dries extremely quickly and can be walked on within just a few minutes.
Tover In its range for substrate preparation in interior, Tover offers a self-leveling compound full of advantages: Rockfloor F10. Its main characteristics are a long leveling time, a thickness of application up to 10 mm by coat and the possibility to lay the wooden floor only after 24 hours. Fiber-reinforced, it is particularly strong and its rough surface improves the adhesion of glues. It is perfectly suitable on under-heating systems. For resilient floorings support preparation indoor and outdoor, the mineral adhesive mortar Rasofloor 5 can be used to even out the surface with a thickness up to 5 mm per coat. It improves the application and adhesion of glues on the sub-floor.

Laminate floors : part 3
LAMINATE IS STILL A COVETED FLOOR SOLUTION WATERPROOF LAMINATE CONQUERS EVEN MORE ROOMS different sensory world. The sublime merit of laminate producers is that they know precisely how to by-pass that perception immaculately. The aroma is hard to imitate, but, as for the rest, no problem. And so, ‘artificial’ doesn’t necessarily have to mean inferior to ‘natural’. The advantage of artificial is obviously the fact that it can be ‘reproduced’. Even (virtually) extinct wood sorts, if there are any, can be reproduced in masses, strictly speaking. That obviously has an effect on the price. The fact is that photography has created the opportunity to make things genuinely look ‘real’.
The look & feel There was a time when laminate floors, all laminate floors for that matter, simply resembled a shiny printed plank: perfectly straight, slippery, no trimmings, and actually so artificial that it had a chilly feel about it. The combination of (digital) print technology, photography techniques, and surface treatment has brought about a drastic change there in terms of both the look and the feel.
Laminate has more than just the look Visual motions, special gloss, relief, 3D effects, and such like are appearing on the surface. These elements are often a refined ‘optical illusion’, but that doesn’t make laminate any less attractive. Let’s just take the illusion that a floorboard has a bevelled edge on the outside, whereas that really isn’t the case. It looks more beautiful and is easier to maintain. As regard trends, producers are concentrating largely on matt designs and to that end they have once again drawn their inspiration from the general prevailing interior trend. Photo – BerryAlloc
Few floors or even building products in general have such a distinct link between technology and aesthetics as laminate. The link concerns both the surface structure and all other decor-related aspects. Photography and digital print technology play a lead role together. That’s exactly why there’s an almost endless number of wood sorts, finishes, decors, fitting patterns, designs (such as a bevelled edge, which is actually a photographic illusion). Beauty through technology – and why not?!
Natural versus artificial To say that wood is stunning due to its natural look and the authentic wood grain might well be a justified claim, yet it does contain just a hint of self-deception. It’s not the fact that a material is natural which makes it beautiful. Wood is beautiful (for wood lovers) simply because it is beautiful. Since we’re now approaching perfection in photography, there’s no reason whatsoever why we can’t find the photograph of that same wood beautiful. Once we extend our appreciation to include the aroma and feel of the wood structure in our appreciation, we’re in a
50
Floor Forum International 85
It also has the feel The imitation aspect, whereby a laminate floor can certainly copy each wood sort (or other material) visually, but the look and feel are not right, is still the main problem for lots of consumers. Embossed in register has cured that shortcoming. What is ‘embossed’? The concept comes from the world of printing (and from art tout court) in which relief is created in an image by allowing two presses positioned opposite each other to press a shape (one negative/the other positive). Embossed in register means that you apply that technique of relief together with the contours of an ‘image’ (in ink or foil) or of a second printed image. For laminate it means that you are going to put the grain of the wood in relief so that you can actually feel the wood grain.
Concealed assets Impact resistance Today’s surface technology has raised the strength and durability of laminate to a higher level. Most laminate floors are more or less resistant to impacts caused by grating, scratches, chemical products, household accidents, and such like. We know that laminate owes its strength primarily to up to seven successive coats of lacquer (depending on the producer) which are now applied by means of UV technology. The latter obviously benefits the strength and speed of
the production. Further properties have been added through the use of nanotechnology in the world of paint. And so, it is possible to increase the scratch-resistance or even make floors completely resistant to bacteria through the addition of certain particles.
Click systems We’ve mentioned this already, but it’s still a phenomenon that is very much in fashion. A few decades ago, licences for click systems were ignored happily and with no scruples. In recent years, lots of manufacturers have associated with the existing licensed click systems. There were only a few, and they stood out because it was difficult to improve on them (e.g. Välinge and Uniclic). For some time now, we’ve seen how a number of manufacturers have nevertheless developed their own click system. Some laminate producers have devised their own click systems (for the ends, for instance) and combine that with registration for existing licences (for the length, for instance).
What about damp rooms? A number of other properties ‘can’ make laminate suitable for use in damp rooms. Makers have paid special attention to the basic material and those click systems for that purpose.
Waterproof material Some materials are 100% waterproof and don’t need any extra protection. For example, a 100% PVC floor is perfectly waterproof. By contrast, the bearer of just about all laminate floors is HDF. HDF tends to absorb water and to swell as a result. A number of laminate floor manufacturers therefore use HDF which has been specially treated and is thereby extra waterproof. Generally, we see that such a waterproof panel is still aided by additional protection for the joints.
Upgraded click systems Floorboards might well be watertight, but water can usually seep down to the subfloor via the joints. That can be problematic for use in damp rooms. Sealing the floor can be part of the solution, but the combination of a sealed surface and an impenetrable joint provides full protection. That combination is also used for laminate. ‘Waterproof’ doesn’t mean the bearer is infinitely resistant to water. To make a laminate floor waterproof there are systems where there is a waterproof coating around the joint (connection between the floorboards). With some systems the edges are protected against damp or the click system is made completely waterproof. Other systems make the floor watertight by providing a rubber strip in the joint system.
only possess this exceptional technology, but also they consist of a wide range of decors and finishes. The perfect choice for every room in the home! BerryAlloc offers consumers more than just a choice of different types and sizes for laminate with or without joints. They also offer a highly extensive choice of different classes ranging from class 31 to class 34.
Faus International Flooring The three best arguments fitters can use to persuade clients to choose for laminate flooring are that it is a high quality floor, has a very good price and a great and nice design. Nowadays, one of the most demanded charasteristics in laminate flooring, is the resistance to humidity and therefore, the possibility of being installed in any room or commercial space. In order to ensure the installation and to prevent it from humidity, FAUS advises to use its special silicone called clicseal to insulate the whole room. Beside this, FAUS has focused on the development of water-resistant surfaces, without departing from what really make a big brand, the quality of the products and the hyper-realism of their designs. Following this line, the Spanish company presents in Domotex 17 ' its new range of pavements 100% waterproof. Ideal floors for all occasions, with designs that perfectly emulate the noblest materials of nature, and with exceptional technical qualities. In addition one of its best advantages is the ease of assembly: you don't need to leave any expansion joints.
Parcolys Flooring

Products from Parcolys Flooring are a combination of a subfloor based on a mixture of PVC and titanium, the top layer consists of an acrylic layer. This structure is completely different to the current laminates where there is an MDF panel with an HPL or CPL top layer. The products Parcolux and Parcostone are 100% waterproof, something which is impossible for laminates with a permeable top and absorbent bottom layer. As far as suitability for damp rooms is concerned, Parcolys floors are therefore suitable for the kitchen and bathroom, but also for the sides of an indoor swimming pool. And so, the major assets of these floors are their waterproof nature, slip resistance, colour fastness, and their hard and durable click system.

Drying oil with LED light: how does it work?
AND THEN THERE WAS LED UV HAD HARDLY SETTLED WHEN LED EMERGED
Photo – Vesting
In the previous edition we reminded our readers of the now established technology for drying lacquers and oils using UV lamps. Today, we can report on a new application, namely drying with LED lights. And why not? Even if the technology is of a totally different nature, the initial comparisons have yielded comparable results and, according to the first pioneers, LED drying does have some advantages over UV drying. At all events, the speed of change has once again reared its head. For the moment, we can only guess as to the future of this innovation. This article gives an introduction.

What is LED? A LED is an electronic semi-conductor component which transmits light when an electric current passes through as required. This is built into a small and transparent casing of a few millimetres, which also works as a lens. The word LED is an abbreviation for light-emitting diode.
A piece of history In 1907, British radio pioneer Henry Joseph Round discovered that a crystal detector contact point can give light. He also noticed that

different materials and voltages can yield different colours. In 1927, Russian scientist Oleg Losev published data in a Russian journal on what we can regard as the first LED and applied for a licence. However, Losev’s work went unnoticed and he perished during the siege of Leningrad. Moreover, the materials he used were not really suitable for diffusing light, so the LED didn’t make a real breakthrough until 1962 when Nick Holonyak developed a functional LED.
Constant quality
How does it work?
LED light drying is ecological. LED lamps don’t contain any mercury or calcium, but equally important is the fact that they emit energy only in the UVA field. This means that no ozone is emitted. And so, expensive suction machines are now a thing of the past. LED lamps also have a particularly long lifespan of over 10,000 hours in contrast to the mere 800 to 1000 hours of UV lamps.
The semi-conductor of a LED has a negative and a positive side. The negative side has extra electrons and is called N-type material or valency wave. The positive side has extra positive charge particles and is called P-type material or conductivity wave. These sides interact and create a prohibited zone in the middle of the diode. This zone doesn’t conduct any electricity. If the negative side of a battery is connected to the N-type material and the positive side is connected to the P-type material, the negative electrons and positive particles start to move towards each other. The prohibited zone in the middle diminishes and disappears. When a negative electron reacts to a positive particle, it loses energy in the form of a photon. These photons together form a ray of light.
The colour of LED The colour of the light produced depends on the kind of materials from which the LED is constructed, particularly the width of the prohibited zone between the valency wave and the conductivity wave. This also explains why a LED with a long wavelength has a lower conducting voltage than one with a short wavelength, for example red 1.7 to 1.9V and blue 2.8 to 4.6V. This also has consequences for the supply voltage and the possible addition of resistance to stabilise the current with a LED circuit.
Application in the parquet industry Vesting sets the ball rolling Vesting was the first company (and so far the only one) to dry oil immediately by using LED light. After a test period of almost two years, the final result has proved a success. The wood surface has a strong protective coating, which dries out in full at once and is ready for use. Moreover, colours come fully into their own. The first commercial small-scale uses of LED are about 10 years old. This started with glueing parts in medical apparatus, low-end print applications, or the repair of fibreglass composites. At present, LED light is used in the graphic industry, electronics, composites, textiles, glass, synthetics, household products, and pharmaceutical and other markets. LED drying is a photo-chemical process which converts a fluid coat into solid matter. Instead of using heat to cause water or solvents to evaporate, the LED energy ensures that a unique and photosensitive composition of high-quality oils, waxes, resins, and additives ‘dries’ in just a few seconds.
Energy-saving The basic difference with UV drying is the huge energy saving. LED light drying yields an immediate 60% reduction in energy consumption. And that’s only a start! LED lamps, in contrast to UV lamps, don’t have to warm up, so production can start at once. Moreover, LED lamps don’t radiate infrared light which is converted into heat. And so, the wood is no longer warm so that roughening of the wood and problems with glueing are kept to a minimum. The minimal development of heat also reduces the risk of fire, for instance due to a delay in the production process, to virtually nil.
54
Floor Forum International 85
Apart from these practical benefits, there is also a huge quality benefit from the use of LED lights as compared to UV lights, namely the constant quality of the LED. Whilst a UV lamp deteriorates in quality as time goes by, the LED lamp maintains constant top quality light whenever it is switched on. Never again will you have a problem with a coating which has not set completely.
Ecological
Industrial and on site LED drying can be carried out in the factory or on site. Here, too, the benefits are significant. Instead of waiting for several hours for the oil to dry, you can use the floor at once. Sandpapering, oiling, and drying is no longer a matter of days, but hours! You empty the room in the morning and replace everything in the course of the afternoon on a perfectly finished floor which comes entirely into its own.
Favourable price Finally, the total cost of LED drying is a lot cheaper than that of UV drying. The oil has a high solid matter content, so the consumption per square metre is low. The low start-up and maintenance costs tilt the balance even further in favour of LED light drying.
LED Hard wax oil from Vesting Apart from its fast drying, the LED hard wax oil from Vesting has many other extra benefits such as strong savings on energy and maintenance. At Vesting UV finishes constitute only a modest portion of the entire turnover. With the development of the LED hard wax oil, the company now has a very cheap and user-friendly alternative for floor fitters who treat floors on site. The floor is dry and ready for use immediately after the treatment, whilst the colour and protective coating adhere to the highest Vesting standards. Vesting supplies SOLELY the revolutionary LED hard wax oil for use on site. With maximum protection, an extensive choice of colours, huge savings on energy consumption, low temperatures during the production process, a long lifespan for the lamps, low maintenance costs, and an environmentally-friendly solution due to the absence of ozone emissions, the LED hard wax oil is the star product at Vesting.

3D WOODEN WALL COVERING IS STILL IN FASHION DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD AND DIFFERENT THICKNESSES CREATE ATMOSPHERE In bygone days, wooden panelling was a popular wall covering in both stately mansions and ordinary family homes. In the former case panelling provided artistic decoration for walls, often embellished with sculptures and usually in oak. In ordinary family homes it usually consisted of cheap wood sorts (softwood) or wooden panels. Strictly speaking, the primary purpose in both cases was to ‘ insulate’. Nowadays, wooden wall covering is making a comeback in both new and renovated buildings. Its main function now, however, is ‘ largely decorative’. Design, and especially 3D, is all the rage.
New and renovated buildings ‘Panelling’ not only has a decorative function as an attractive wall covering, but also, in many cases, it offers a technical solution. From an architectural point of view panelling can revolutionise the nature of the space. Its decorative and functional assets apply to both new and renovated buildings.
In renovation With renovation, panelling offers plenty of assets, not least the ‘technical assets’. After all, panelling is a perfect solution for concealing wires and, furthermore, it allows you to integrate sockets and switches into the wall quickly and easily. Utility wires are simply attached to the wall and panelling is fitted on top. Moreover, panelling can be fitted relatively quickly. With renovation, speedy work is usually required since the residents often stay in the property during the renovation work. This is also the reason why it is preferable to avoid too much demolition and removal work. Panelling is an ideal solution, for instance, for badly damaged walls.
With new construction The technical benefits of panelling play a less prominent role in the case of new construction. In this case panelling is chosen from the start for decorative reasons as a warm and aesthetic wall covering. It can always be painted over, irrespective of the material used for the panelling. That is partly the reason why panelling suits any house style. Indeed, colours make it possible to affect the tone, from a rigidly modern to a romantic cocoon atmosphere. Moreover, the fact that it can be painted over has the advantage of making it easy to adapt the walls to any change to the interior or the colours of the furniture. Obviously, panelling also protects the wall. If there is any damage, it is necessary only to paint over the panelling, not the entire wall.
Various panelling materials Whilst panelling was once designed exclusively in wood or wooden panelling material, other materials are emerging nowadays. Panelling can consist of wooden planks with tongue and groove joints, panels such as plywood, MDF, metals, lacquered laths or profiled synthetic panels. With the latter we often see a design with imitations of other materials such as metal or wood. A material which is becoming
increasingly common is foiled MDF. The MDF panels are available in countless decors or equipped with a white foil which can be painted over. Obviously, panelling which consists of solid wood puts us entirely in the field of the parquet fitter. Floor fitters can fit panelling themselves from A to Z or buy a ready-to-fit package. Several manufacturers offer such packages. At all events, panelling is constructed and finished with specific parts. In the order of fitting, these are: the skirting board, the starting frame, panels or intermediate frames, end frames, and top frames.
The way to 3D Classic panelling certainly hasn’t gone completely out of fashion. On the contrary, lots of project managers still enjoy the functional (technical) and decorative assets. However, there has been a drastic change in the architectural applications, certainly from the interior designer’s point of view. In the case of wood certain trends stand out at once: the use of different types of wood in one and the same wall covering and the use of different thicknesses for the strips, even in the same wall covering. More generally, 3D is also becoming a trend with the use of other building materials. Just as with classic panelling, wooden wall covering with 3D effect is also available in ‘pre-fab’ or can be fitted by a specialist on site (starting from the bare wall).
Different types of wood Types of wood differ in terms of both design (different wood grains and selections) and colour; that’s for sure. The variation in shades is just as extensive as the endless number of wood sorts themselves. Depending entirely on the taste of the project manager and/or architect, it is possible to use a range of combinations and create a colourful sobriety. Dark (wenge) combined with light (oak or teak) or precisely the same colours with just light differences in tone ensure special decorative results.
Different thicknesses Different colours are one thing; different thickness are an entirely different matter. By combining strips or blocks of different thicknesses, you create relief and depth, but also, and in particular, shadows. Those shadows give the effect of different colours, even if you use only one wood sort. A combination of different wood sorts and different thicknesses serves to highlight the shades.
What’s on the market? Bruno SRL At Bruno they do occasionally get requests from customers for wall cladding. They have also noticed that there is a certainly a growing demand for wall cladding in 3D, which provides extra relief. That’s exactly why Bruno has added a special ‘Walls’ series to the range of flat strips. This is a wall cladding system put together in advance. The wall cladding is not necessarily identical to the floor. In fact, some designers actually look for some contrast on the wall. As regards

mounting, Bruno presents a suitable adhesive for vertical glueing, but it is possible to order an accompanying base. There are thinner planks for the wall cladding than those for floors, even in the same wood sort. The finish obviously depends on the customer, but it can be in oil, lacquer, or, certainly for Walls, even rough.
Finium Wall cladding from Finium is available as a solid wood panel in 3D. It is quite clear that wooden wall cladding is a trend. When Finium first came onto the French market, there were only about two or three friendly competitors, but at the recent Carrefour du Bois there were easily 13. The biggest demand is for structural panels such as 3D, in which Finium was one of the pioneers. Generally, clients opt for the same wood sort as for the floor, but wall cladding obviously allows greater variety of textures than parquet. The panels are glued and nailed. The fitting can be done very quickly since Finium offers big sizes. Since wall cladding doesn’t have to be as robust as floor covering, Finium offers finer strips. The finish is with UV oil and this is applied with a brush.
INPA Parket INPA Parket supplies various sorts of wall furnishing. The company also offers wall furnishing in 3D, designed in 100% FSC approved subtropical hardwood, but also in oak and softwood. INPA Parket doesn’t have any experience of panelling, but it has used 3D for various projects. Since the material is the same as that with which wooden floors are made, fitting these 3D solutions is definitely something for floor fitters. They can fit them perfectly well. INPA Parket also supplies panels ready for fitting. The Chaco®Wood 3D panels give the interior a lively, trendy, and artistic look.
Heywood Vloeren Heywood Vloeren supplies coverings for walls and ceilings in both new and old wood (Reclaimed Oak, Reclaimed Elm, and reclaimed Spruce Barnwood) in wide planks and also Reclaimed Oak in 3D wall panels. Customised 3D wall covering is also possible in old reclaimed wood, especially old oak (insides & outsides). For Heywood Vloeren this 3D wall covering is an emerging trend which is very popular as a decorative ambience highlight in the interior with consumers, buyers, architects,

and designers. With 3D wall covering a whole wall (including doors) is usually covered from the floor to the ceiling, something which is not the case with panelling. This is a product which can be offered perfectly well by parquet floor fitters whereby they provide services such as supply and installation from the ranges of their regular supplier/producer. Heywood Vloeren supplies a particularly attractive and elegant technical high-quality 3D product in various shades of colour. All 3D supplies are customised on the basis of specific conditions and wall dimensions on site.
Lite Wood International Lite Wood International is an independent wood supplier and imports wood or wood-related products, particularly from Asia. With Starwall the company presents an extensive collection of luxury 3D hand-delivered wall panels with a unique look. Each section of the panel has its own characteristic structure and shape. Unique features include the interlock and Z-joints, which ensure invisible fitting. Starwall comes in four collections: Reclaimed Root Teak Classic from the renowned Djati Indonesian teak. The combination of root teak and recycled teak gives the panels a unique look. There’s also a Teak FSC recycled collection made from 100% FSC recycled teak wood. The Elegance collection of recycled teak wood is fitted with a unique 3-Step Z-system so that annoying seams are never visible. Finally, the Driftwood collection consists of drift wood. The lengthy exposure to the sea means that the wood is shaped splendidly through the motion of the water. Erosion and the effects of salt and sunlight yield the characteristically weathered element. The full collection is also available in two colours: light grey (greyed) colour and a darker colour which resembles charcoal.
Parketfabriek Lieverdink Woodbricks as a wall furnishing consists of panels of 65 x 15cm with cleaved or brushed oak wood, natural, and smoked oak. These can be coloured with oil. Parquet, too, is often deployed as a wall furnishing. Here they use Q2 2-layer 13mm wood with tongue and groove. Usually, the floor runs through up the wall. The so called 3D effect is achieved with the loose blocks at different heights; Woodbricks gives this effect. Woodbricks are also highly decorative on a small surface with a hearth, for instance. There is a certain group of people who have an eye for this, and often an interior architect is called for. It can also be very attractive for companies, for instance, to light up a logo. Woodbricks are elements which fit together with a lip/joint system; the base is birch plywood with oak blocks stuck onto it. These are fitted to the wall using glue, comparable to brick
strips. Q2 is 13/16mm material with a bottom layer of birch plywood and 4/4.5mm of solid wood glued on top.
Parqueterie de Bourgogne For Parqueterie de Bourgogne it is clear that producers who want to widen their range have been selling wall covering for some years. Products are good and demand is growing. For Parqueterie de Bourgogne, too, there is more of a trend towards 3D. These are either panels with strips of different thicknesses or individual strips which floor fitters can fit as required. There are no rules: Different wood sorts lend themselves to wall covering and there are even panels with different sorts to create contrast. Panels can be glued or screwed or there are even self-adhesive boards. At Parqueterie de Bourgogne the smallest thickness is 5mm, but that obviously varies for 3D. The company offers brushed, sandblasted, or hand-sawn designs, which may or may not be coloured, oiled, or lacquered.
MANUFACTUROR OF SOLID AND ENGINEERED WOODFLOORS Style panels, end grain, distressed floors (different ageing techniques ‘sanded, brushed, tumbled, smoked and structured’): Customised work on simple request!
The Magnet Wooden wall covering has always been popular and that’s still the case, if only because it is an ingenious and economic way of giving problematic walls (e.g. with damp or wires) an attractive finish. There has been an increase in designs and materials. Multiplex or MDF are still the standard materials, but, increasingly, they are also seeing the emergence of multi-layer parquet in order to highlight a wall. At all events, at Exterpark they use the same products for the wall as for the floor, even if other sizes are often required. Here, they have developed a licensed installation system under the trademark The Magnet, which can be used on all surfaces. The system requires no screws and leaves each panel accessible. And so, you can access any wires, something which is an advantage in comparison with other permanent systems. As regards finishes, they offer various possibilities.
Vetedy Vetedy offers with its Techniclic® a complete range of invisible fixation system for wood cladding, from wooden board and its fixation, to all the fixation accessories and a cleaning product. The installation of Techniclic® authorize horizontal and vertical, gives the choice to work with similar width, or to mix up the 3 available widths and to choose the spacing between the boards (4 possibilities). The wood species are thermo-treated local and exotic as well: padouk, ayous, ash, northern pine… The system’s simplicity allows an easy and fast installation for a net and precise result.

Installing vinyl, LVT and PVC floors
FITTING FLEXIBLE FLOORS … A SEPARATE TRADE? TRADE BOUNDARIES CONTINUE TO GET BLURRED Blurred boundaries The profession of a parquet floor fitter, at least that of the seasoned floor fitters of old, is still a noble trade. Let’s make that quite clear. So what has changed? The somewhat lonely trooper/artist has had to develop some economic skills prompted by market-related patterns. Competition prompts a touch of marketing, differentiation in product ranges, and more versatility for competitive reasons. These days, if you stick to ‘nothing but traditional parquet’, you lose your market share. A sense of honour leads to poverty or, alternatively, you have to be one of the best; and they do exist, of course.
Traditional parquet and the rest The aforementioned ‘nothing but traditional parquet’ was once a parquet fitter’s core business. It was (and is) a ‘pure’ trade which requires vast knowledge in the areas of wood sorts, the behaviour of the material, glueing products and lacquers and oils, tools, and accessories. ‘Like any trade,’ you think. Maybe, but wood still needs some special attention. It lives to some extent and professionals have to consider that before, during, and after the fitting. And so, it comes as no surprise to learn that ‘other’ floors, with the exception of ‘stone’, are no great problem for parquet floor fitters. The move to an extensive range of products to include wooden floors, solid wood and multi-layer, cork, veneer, bamboo, laminate, and, nowadays, also flexible floor coverings would seem a logical trend.
The successful parquet floor fitter
Photo – Plastivan
People of certain generations (including my own) will remember workers who specialised in ‘plain traditional parquet’ or ‘wall-to-wall carpet’. They were separate trades, and in the days when wall-to-wall carpets prospered, there were some ‘wealthy citizens’. Those same workers had no problem at all in fitting vinyl or linoleum (using a similar method) and, yes, their work was outstanding. Loose or glued, they did the job. In those days, ‘parquet fitters’ were a different ‘ breed’. They were dignitaries of the woodwork trade, ‘angels’ with a more exalted assignment. They looked down sometimes disparagingly on companies which earned their bread from ‘that cheap stuff ’. Times have changed.

Floor Forum International 85
Recently, I spoke to a parquet floor fitter with a longstanding sound reputation, a specialist to the core, who said to me laconically, ‘There aren’t any parquet fitters anymore.’ Sigh! It’s sad if that’s what the very best ones think. However, we have to relativise. Why not do some ‘profiling’? It seems increasingly that the future is in the hands of ‘the new order of parquet floor fitters’, and it’s surely worth examining them at close quarters. The parquet trader of the future ISN’T the one who denies the old trade, discarding all expertise and fitting only readymade products. Those ‘types’ exist, but they make the mistake of competing with DIY markets where they offer little added value. Neither is the parquet trader of the future the one who sticks stubbornly to ‘nothing but traditional parquet’. They do exist, but they are a dying breed. The parquet trader of the future is the professional or entrepreneur who offers a wide range of floor solutions, including the old crafts. That’s the parquet trader who will find work in the construction industry, from the living room to the play attic!
Keeping up is the key! Anyone who can fit traditional parquet can actually fit ‘anything’. However, on the other hand, it seems highly unlikely that a specialist in fitting flexible floors could fit traditional parquet just like that. And so, over the years, you see how traders in flexible floors firstly took up laminate, then multi-layer ready-made parquet, and, finally traditional parquet in their range. For the latter they call upon the services of, yes, a ‘parquet floor fitter’. For fitting those other floor coverings
the traditional floor fitter has to take account of ‘other’ points for attention. There are differences in the area of substrate preparation, subfloors, adhesives, and even the profiles used. We give a brief summary.
Levelling Levellers for a parquet floor need great compressive strength. This might also be necessary with LVT/PVC floors if they have to be fitted, for instance, in a hospital (heavy hospital beds and such like). In other cases less compressive strength will suffice, so the levelling agent is of a different kind. Firstly, you have to consider what type of covering floor has been fitted. For example, for anhydrite floors there are special anhydrite levelling agents available and there are the normal cementbound levelling agents for cement covering floors. Then, you have to consider what layer thickness you need for the levelling (in order to be able to level out any unevenness in the substrate). There are levelling agents in diverse layer thicknesses. Last of all, the final floor is decisive (carpet, PVC, or parquet). Depending on the final floor, there are levelling agents available with various compressive strengths (C25C30 etc.) and bending tensile strengths (F6-F7-etc). Before levelling, just as with parquet, a primer is usually necessary to bind the dust and raise the absorbent effect of the subfloor.
Subfloor Subfloors for laminate or floating (multi-layer) parquet have to meet different demands to those of flexible subfloors such as vinyl, PVC, linoleum, or textile, at least as regards levelling capacity. It’s all about the density of these floors. We’ve often said that a perfectly level subfloor is necessary for an attractive and durable end result. After all, unevenness or differences in level show through in the final top floor. The extent to which that happens varies partly due to the hardness or density of the floor. Slight unevenness in the screed will generally not be visible with laminate or parquet. In those cases a flexible subfloor can suffice, with or without an integrated damp screen. However, with flexible floor coverings it is essential to eliminate that slight unevenness by using a harder subfloor.
Adhesive For flexible floor coverings (apart from cork) such as vinyl and linoleum dispersion adhesives are absolutely ideal. Some PU adhesives are also suitable. These floors have a more smooth and closed structure than wood, which has open pores. This makes it hard for them to absorb the water in the glue, so therefore you need semi-wet or virtually dry glueing. Moreover, these materials move a lot less than wood, and that implies different demands as regards elasticity. The adhesive and the subfloors come under much less pressure (fewer sideways pulling forces) than with wooden floors. Nevertheless, the adhesive has to be strong enough to make a durable bond. Some producers therefore add reinforcement fibres to the dispersion.
Profiles Combinations of hard floor covering and other hard floor coverings (parquet and laminate, for instance) or hard floor coverings and flexible floor coverings (parquet with linoleum, textile, or vinyl, for instance) are a matter of course. For example, this allows you to let a parquet floor in the living room run into a vinyl floor with the same appearance in the kitchen. And ‘run into’ is the very expression; the one material runs into the other. The market offers a ‘wealth’ of profiles for those different possible transitions. Profiles are usually designed in such a way that they can be used for the various types of floors, for different thicknesses within the same types of floors, or for the combination of different floor types.
Parcolys Flooring For Parcolys Flooring the special thing with fitting flexible floor coverings is particularly the skill of being able to create frames for doors in an attractive and finished manner. An attractive silicone seal all round also requires some skill (if you want to a complete seal in a bathroom, for instance). They believe that you don’t need any special training or specific tools for this. The difference in fitting LVT/PVC and laminate is clear: Hard PVC materials are somewhat more difficult to click together, but in the long term they expand better and the click system operates better. At Parcolys Flooring almost 100% of floors are for floating fitting, but the company also has a solution for glueing floors in verandas, for instance. As regards adhesives, they recommend MS polymers, TEC 7, and solutions such as Bostik High Tack.
Plastivan As far as Plastivan is concerned, there are a number of points for attention as regards the fitting of flexible floor coverings. In preparation for the fitting, the subfloor has to be clean, hard, smooth, dry, dust-free, stable, and flat (according to DIN 18365). With click systems the permitted maximum difference in height is 1mm over a length of one metre. If necessary, the subfloor should be levelled first. The use of a suitable LVT subfloor is obligatory. The substrate is not suitable for glueing until after a primer and a levelling compound have been applied. The primer should be applied first with a roller in order to obtain good adhesion between the substrate and the levelling compound. As soon as the primer is dry, the levelling compound should be applied with a trowel. For both applications you contact the producer of those materials, if necessary. For fitting panels it is necessary to use a solventless, fast-sticking, and water-based dispersion adhesive which is suitable for glueing PVC panels. Always follow the instructions on the packet. The adhesive should be applied using an A2 adhesive. After the prescribed waiting time, put the panels in the wet glue and press them strongly for maximum adhesion. You mustn’t walk on the floor during the glueing because the panels could shift. After about 30 minutes, the floor needs to be rolled with a roller (minimum 50 kilos). Repeat this again after the entire floor has been fitted. Remove glue stains immediately with a damp cloth, but never use solvents.

Producers of ship deck parquet
SHIP DECK PATTERN IS THE SUMMIT OF DESIGN A TECHNICAL AND DECORATIVE MAVERICK A ‘ boat trip’ on the French Riviera is certainly exclusive, something for the ‘ happy few’, so to speak. Anyone who has a parquet floor fitted in that same pattern that we see on the deck has a feel for exclusivity. And so, the ship deck pattern is amongst the more elegant parquet floors. The pattern itself is certainly on the market, and that is confirmed by the fact that the market offers several technical design possibilities. Ship deck is available in solid wood, multi-layer, and also in laminate.
The pattern itself The name ship deck says it all. It is a wood pattern which resembles the deck of a ship. The technique has been used for centuries, certainly at least as far back as the existence of the Roman galleons. It goes without saying that the deck of a ship comes into excessive contact with water. Now, we all know the old saying that ‘water is wood’s biggest enemy’. This claim is slightly exaggerated. After all, we can protect wood from water perfectly well or, better still, we can simply take account of the reaction of wood to the penetration of damp. In other words, when makers produce a wooden ship deck, they pay attention to the fact that wood ‘moves’ when exposed to damp. It swells and shrinks again as soon as it is dry. It is important to know that ‘drying’ means a return to balance. And so, it all boils down to giving the wood space to swell when it comes into contact with water and to return to its ‘original shape’ after drying. And so, ship deck pattern alternates between wooden strips and flexible joints. In ship building this is done in line with a detailed and sophisticated procedure. When a wooden or wood-related floor is fitted in a home, there are four conceivable scenarios possible.
Wood + wood The combination of wider floorboards in one wood sort and narrow borders in a different wood sort takes us to the realm of traditional parquet (6mm) and Burgundy (9mm). Strictly speaking, this manner of fitting is no more difficult, but, due to the alternating widths, it does take a little longer. An extremely popular combination for these ship deck floors (also in ready-made as well!) is that of teak and wenge. The dark wenge stands out nicely from the pale teak, something which fans of these floors love. Others have a clear preference for combinations where the difference in colour is less pronounced so that the border (joint) blends in with the floor less obtrusively to give the whole a calmer sphere. That is purely a matter of taste, of course!
Wood + flexible joint The second type of ship deck floor is a combination of floorboards, bound by a wide joint which is filled with a flexible material. For some years now, this flexible material has consisted of a strip fitted between the floorboards. However, the classic method is that whereby a joint is fitted between the floorboards using a silane-based product. The parquet strips are glued directly onto the screed. As we’ve already said,
60
Floor Forum International 85
the important point in fitting a ship deck floor in this way is the width of the joints. This depends directly on the width of the strips and for some applications is ‘imperative’. The chart below (Source: Application manual for bonding and caulking of teak decks - Simson) shows the ‘minimum’ joint dimensions in co-relation to the width of the planks. STRIP WIDTH 35mm 45mm 50mm 75mm 100mm 125mm
JOINT WIDTH 5mm 5-6mm 6-7mm 10mm 12mm 16mm
JOINT DEPTH 6mm 6mm 6mm 7mm 8mm 10mm
Ready-made In various floor segments pre-finished has made fitting parquet ‘more accessible’, even for DIY lovers (this has to be said). Laying ready-made floorboards, often fitted with a click system, requires a dose of common sense rather than years of professional expertise. Several makers offer ship deck floors as one of many decors on offer. Ship deck patterns are applied to the floorboards themselves in the factory in advance. In some cases a rubber strip between joints is also necessary, but in most cases even that isn’t necessary. Ready-made ship deck floors are on offer in solid wood and multi-layer.
Laminate Once a pattern becomes fashionable, laminate makers run like chickens to include it in their decors. With laminate ship deck floors the joint usually has a rubber strip finish. The ends definitely have to be sealed. Generally, we can say that ship deck floors will turn out somewhat more expensive than other floors. Even for floors with integrated joint, the fact is that these floors are fitted in bathrooms a lot where the smaller space makes the work more difficult. In particular, there is a lot more sawing (and therefore waste). If the floor doesn’t have to be waterproof, the joint can be finished in wood.
The role of silane MS polymers and other silane products are still a recent development in the parquet industry, but in the maritime world they have been tested and used extensively for several decades. It’s the elasticity of these silane products which is so greatly appreciated in the shipping world. After all, in that context there is almost constant contact with water and the wood ‘moves’ constantly. Silane products are used both for glueing the strips onto a ship deck and for finishing the joints. Similarly, when we have to prepare a shower wall or floor, we work on the basis of the aforementioned principle that we have to take account of the swelling and shrinking of the wood. We do this (in parquet terms) by allowing for a spacious joint so that the strips can swell and shrink comfortably. Silane products are also used for this joint.

Producers of ship deck parquet
What’s on the market?
Habo applies a U-joint into which either a black joint kit can be sprayed or a wenge edging can be fitted. Teak is still the most important wood sort and can be combined with an edging in wenge.
Design Parquet For Design Parquet ship deck is still in fashion, especially fittings with an integrated joint. Since the connecting strip is integrated, as with Navylam+ floors, these floors are no more expensive to fit than other floors. Design Parquet offers seven wood sorts: acacia, iroko, wenge, doussie, teak, mtentye, and afrormosia. For correct fitting floor fitters should follow the maker’s instructions. Ship deck parquet is a warm and pleasant floor which is easy to maintain. At Design Parquet they use 100% solid wood.
Habo Ship deck parquet certainly isn’t a trend at Habo. Moreover, fitting these floors with a black joint kit or an edging in wenge requires extra work and makes the floor quite expensive. Moreover, fitting these floors certainly requires real expertise on the part of the floor fitter. Habo presents the 9mm Classic Line (solid wood traditional parquet) and 13 or 18mm Top Line (multi-layer parquet) in teak (tectona grandis).
Junckers Junckers receives requests for ship deck parquet only very rarely. Junckers offers these floors completely engineered and finished. And so, they are fitted in exactly the same way as other parquet floors and the fitting doesn’t require any special skills or points for attention. A good 97% of all produced floors from Junckers are ready for fitting. The company produces solely ‘solid wood’. There are three possible types: nailed fitting, fully glued, and with a clip system (something which is unique for solid wood floors). These ship deck floors are very attractive in combination with floor heating because joints are never visible. Oak and smoked oak are best-sellers here, too.

Producers of epoxy-polyurethane adhesives
THE UNIQUE COMBINATION OF EPOXY AND POLYURETHANE WHEN THE GIANTS MEET … Physical adhesive reactions A physical adhesive reaction doesn’t involve a chemical reaction at all. Physical reactions can take on different forms. One technique is the ‘loss of the solvent’ where you let the solvent evaporate from the glue first for a certain time and then, later, you join the parts which you want to glue. Examples of these adhesives are wood glue, paper glue, and tyre glue. Glue can also set by ‘cooling off’. In this case the adhesive mass is applied in the form of a hot fluid to the surface to be glued. The adhesion is created as the fluid cools off. With so called ‘stick adhesives’, the adhesive is rubbery and the tack retains its strength. Finally, there are the ‘melting adhesives’ whereby components melt together.
Chemical adhesive reactions

People say that hybrids combine the good features of various forms of technology. You take a little of this, a little of that, you mix it all up, and there you have ‘ it’. Some people believe that this applies particularly to epoxy-polyurethane adhesives. Indeed, these glues combine the best features of epoxy and polyurethane. That combination yields an outstanding product with unrivalled qualities. Many people regard epoxy-PU adhesive as the ultimate peak for the full glueing of parquet and wooden floors. It’s the ultimate combination, but how does it come about?
The ‘essence’ of the adhesive process Glueing is a technique which is always done in different phases. The first major step is to clean the substrates (base) which you want to glue. After that, the substrate may still need other measures to make it suitable for glueing (e.g. a primer). The next step is to apply the glue. The glueing process is complete once the adhesive has reacted. Various adhesion mechanisms bring this about. As a rule, there are two sorts of adhesive reactions, namely the physical reaction and the chemical reaction.
64
Floor Forum International 85
The feature of adhesives which work on the basis of chemical reactions is that there are several components present in the glue which, once they are joined together, provide a chemical reaction. Here, too, there are various sorts of reactions or glues. With dual-component adhesives the reaction takes place when the components react to each other. Examples of this include epoxy, phenolic, acrylate, cyanoacrylate, and polyurethane adhesives. However, the reaction can also take place by means of ‘moisture’. In this case the second component needed to bring about a reaction is present in the atmosphere. Examples of glues which extract the second component from the atmosphere include urethane, silicone, and cement adhesives. The recently developed MS polymer adhesives owe their reaction to the air humidity. With the so called anaerobic adhesives the glue reacts to the exclusion of oxygen. UV or X-ray curing adhesives set under the influence of UV light or radiation from electrons. Finally, there are the ‘no mix’ adhesives where the components are applied separately to the substrate and the glue doesn’t set until the sections which you want to glue together come into contact with each other.
A combination of giants Bringing together polyurethane and epoxy produces an adhesive which stands out for its reliability in a multitude of applications. Epoxy plays the part of the hardener in this combination.
Polyurethane and PU adhesive PU is a co-polymer which consists of hard and soft segments. These segments arise from the reaction of urethane and isocyanate, form a
long chain, and alternate with each other. The hard segments tend to crystallise and form a hard material. The soft segments should, when viewed separately, form a syrupy liquid. The combination of both segments ensures that the best properties from both segments are joined together. This means that PU adhesive is very strong, yet also elastic. By ‘playing’ with the length spread of the segments, adhesive makers can modify the properties of the material fairly flexibly. Polyurethane adhesive is absolutely ideal for glueing just about all parquet floors or wooden floors, especially solid parquet, wider strips, and moisture-sensitive wood types (2K) such as beech, maple, and such like. Polyurethane adhesives can be used for glueing onto anhydrite floors and sand-cement floors. They are ideal for fitting pre-lacquered floors which are fitted after a damp screen has been installed.
Epoxy and epoxy adhesive Epoxy is a thermo-hardening synthetic, which can be used to help produce composites. They are used in combination with fibreglass or clothing as solid and lightweight materials. During production, the material is slightly fluid and lends itself to impregnating fibre material. Composites produced in this way are weatherproof and waterproof and used, for instance, to produce yachts. Furthermore, epoxy is used as a base for many products. A few examples are epoxy adhesive/ epoxy resin, paint (wet paint and powder paint), floors, and print plates for electronic circuits. Epoxy has a compressive strength and tensile strength twice that of concrete. Due to its liquid density it can be used in several processes, including as a floor application. This material makes room for itself both in industry and on the aesthetics market. One disadvantage is that epoxy does become discoloured under UV light. Epoxy adhesive is a dual-component adhesive based on epoxy and it is used for several applications in industry, at home, and in the construction of model aircrafts. It can be applied as a coating, but also in combination with fibreglasses. Epoxy adhesive is also used as a repair glue whereby a solid substance is used as a filler. A hardener is added to the epoxy to create a strong adhesive bond.
A selection from the range Adesiv Adesiv was one of the first producers in Europe to present dual-component epoxy-polyurethane adhesives. These adhesives are still one of the strong points of Adesiv and they are the most popular products in over 25 countries. Euro F1 (solventless), Pelpren PL6 (EC1), and Euro 5 (EC1/solventless) are dual-component epoxy-polyurethane adhesives, which contain no water. They are designed specially for glueing wooden floors onto any sort of concrete substrate or onto existing non-absorbent floors (marble, tiles, Palladiana, or wooden substrates). The adhesives are suitable for glueing pre-engineered wooden floors onto concrete sand-cement covering floors or onto existing non-absorbent floors (marble, tiles, Palladiana, or wooden substrates). The sometimes extremely ‘capricious’ tropical wood sorts are no problem for these adhesives and it is also perfectly possible to combine floor heating with these adhesives. These adhesives are odourless and do not include any health warnings.

Devo® Devo® Glue PU 570 2C and Devo® Glue PU 650 2C are both waterless 2-component polyurethane-epoxy parquet adhesives specially for glueing wooden floors onto cement-bound substrates or onto existing floors (tiles, marble, wooden floors, etc.). Both adhesives are suitable for glueing parquet directly onto concrete, cement covering floors (screeds), anhydrite, fermacell plates, and wood. Without a subfloor they can also be used on degreased ceramic tiles or marble. Devo® Glue PU 570 2C is semi-elastic. The combination of lasting flexibility, a long open time (120 and 90 minutes respectively), and great adhesive strength makes these adhesives high-quality technical products. It is a very good all round adhesive, which can be used in most critical situations.
Stauf The success of the product group in Europe varies from country to country due to the different classifications for health and safety at work. In Germany there is a greater degree of knowledge of the consequences for health and the environment than in other countries. In other countries the competition is extremely stiff, so therefore cheaper adhesive is needed. EP adhesive is used mostly for multi-layer parquet and solid parquet with little impact on the adhesive and subfloor. In general, 2-component products have a long open time and strong adhesion. The drawbacks are the adverse effects on human health and the environment. The open time of Stauf adhesive is 120 minutes and you can use it to glue multi-layer parquet and some types of solid parquet. This glue is very strong.
Tover Two-component epoxy-polyurethane adhesives still represent an excellent compromise and combination between high adhesion performances on any support and a competitive price. These glues are less elastic than silane based products, but they are very strong and enable to bond even on under-heating systems massive big dimensions boards. TOVCOL TP2C, solvent free and odorless and TOVCOL T.A. are also suitable for small and medium sized floors, thanks to their long working time (around 2 hours) and good yield. They do not contain isocyanate and are particularly easy to mix and apply. Tover has launched on the market a new epoxy adhesive: Tovcol TP2C Fastblock, quicker to block the wood for an anticipated sanding.

BELGIUM LAND OF OPPOSITES A LOVE/HATE RELATIONSHIP WHICH IS BEARING (COPIOUS) FRUIT Obviously, there are other countries where antitheses and even opposites cohabit within the same territory. However, it is highly questionable whether there are other countries where it is precisely the antitheses themselves which determine the nature of society. Belgium overflows with antitheses and tensions, yet at the same time the country produces illustrious global figures and personalities in virtually all sectors and disciplines e.g. politics, industry, science, and sport. It is due to the global character of some that Belgians together call themselves ‘Belgian’, despite the antitheses and divisions. When the Red Devils (Belgium’s national football team) score a goal, Flemings and Walloons are suddenly ‘one’. It remains to be seen whether that will still be the case in the future.
an agreement between two or more independent states. They would do everything separately, except for those things for which they have concluded agreements. Confederation is an absolute priority for some Flemish parties.
The concept of ‘Belgium’
The rise in welfare in the various regions has been very uneven. If we consider turnover, Flemish urban areas or city regions have a business vitality which is five times greater than in Wallonia; investments in Flanders are four times greater. Furthermore, average income per head of population is very different. Income in Flanders is amongst the highest in Europe (20% above average), whilst in Wallonia it is still 10% below the European average. Brussels Capital Region retains a strong position. In Flanders the main economic driving forces are Antwerp, Ghent, and the Flemish periphery around Brussels. In Wallonia, Liege and Charleroi have suffered severe setbacks. The Antwerp-Genk-Brussels triangle is growing into a single major business region with all the resulting socio-economic problems.
In 1830, the world decided to map out a triangle in Central Western Europe to accommodate three different sorts of people there and to give that region a tricoloured flag. And so, those antitheses were there at the very beginning. Belgium is actually a standard designed ‘buffer state’. The Belgians in the various regions don’t have any cultural, social, or historical affinity with each other. And so, the country is certainly colourful, but at the same time it really is a time bomb! Economically, Belgium has always been a land of ‘everyone in turn’. At present, Flanders is wealthier than Wallonia. At the start of the 20th century, the opposite was true when the Walloon economy profited from emerging industries, whilst Flanders got stuck in a rut with agriculture. After World War II, the mainly heavy industry in Wallonia fell into steep decline and was only able to survive with the aid of strong support from the government. In the meantime, Flanders has profited from the emergence of light industries, the ports, and investment from several foreign companies.
Unique political structure Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy. The country also includes about 30 small areas or exclaves in the Dutch province of Northern Brabant, which together form the local authority of BaarleHertog. Belgium borders on the North Sea in the west (the coastline is 66km long), the Netherlands to the north (450km), the Germany (167km) and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (148 km) to the east, and France (620km) in the south. Geographically, Belgium can be divided up into three regions: Low Belgium (up to 100 metres high), Middle Belgium (from 100 to 200 metres high), and Upper Belgium (from 200 to over 500 metres high). Politically, Belgium is divided into three regions, namely the Walloon Region, Flemish Region, and Brussels Capital City Region. Federal states can make their own decisions and still receive federal government funding. For example, the regions can appoint civil servants, but pensions have to be paid later by the federal government. This situation has led many people, especially Flemings, to think that the regions don’t accept enough responsibility for their decisions. Many people want a confederation,

Economic development Belgium enjoyed a period of economic growth between 1960 and 1974. The economy grew each year by 4.9% on average. In the recession period from 1974 to 1988, there was talk of slow growth or even a decrease in the gross national product (GDP) for some years (1975 and 1981). The average annual economic growth during those years was a mere 1.7%. Gross domestic product in 2014 grew by 0.1% as compared to the previous year.
Uneven pace
Working population The total Belgian professional population amounted to 5.15 million people at the end of 2013, roughly half of the total population. Since 1961, the professional population has risen by almost 700,000 units and that is almost entirely due to the increasing numbers of women on the labour market. In 1991, 35.4% of women carried out professional work as opposed to 20% in the early 1960s. The figure for the men in the same period fell from 57.4 to 49.5%. Geographical shifts are also important. The Flemish Region has enjoyed the greatest expansion and has also been affected less by the economic recession. The provinces with major employment in heavy industry (Hainaut and Liege) have suffered the most. There have also been shifts in the ratio of blue and white-collar workers.
Government debt is still high In 2000, the government balanced the books for the first time in fifty years. Reducing national debt has been high on the political agenda for years. With the pressure of requirements for admission to the European Monetary Union, Belgium managed to reduce its deficits. Yet Belgium, together with Italy, still has the highest national debt in the EU, partly due to the constant support given by the government to ailing industries in Belgium. The budget deficit in 2013 was -3.2% and national debt was 102.4% of the GDP.
From industry to services Belgium was one of the first industrialised countries in Europe, but, in recent decades, it has developed more into a service economy. In 2014, services in Belgium contributed 73% to the GDP. Several services are related to industry, and that varies from wage administration companies, accountancy, Legal services, call centres, and consultancy. The service sector, which includes many Belgian but also foreign companies, is located mainly in the region of Brussels, especially due to its central location in Europe and the proximity of several agencies of the European Union. The financial services make a major contribution to the gross domestic product. The many small banks in Belgium have grown into major concerns through mergers with mainly Dutch and French banks.
Wood in Belgium Forestry The proportion of forest to the total surface area of the Flemish Region is one of the lowest in Europe, with a figure of 10.8%. In Flanders the Flemish Agency for Nature and Forest (‘Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos’) has worked out a management strategy. This outlines the main policies for the management of public forests in Flanders. In Wallonia the proportion of forest is 32% of the total surface area. More than 60% of the Walloon forests are located in the Ardennes. In Wallonia it is the Department of Nature and Forests (‘Division de la nature et des forêts’) which decides how forests should be managed. Sustainable forest management is the basic principle of the Walloon policy. It aims to guarantee the recovery and sustainability of the forest in order to achieve an ideal balance between the economic, ecological, and social function of the forest. The Sonian Forest is an exception in this respect, since it is managed by three regions together, namely the Flemish Region, Walloon Region, and Brussels Capital City Region. In the Brussels Capital City Region the Sonian Forest has been certified since 2003 according to the criteria of the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).

Parquet market In Belgium people are generally showing more and more appreciation for parquet and wooden floors. Nevertheless, the country is still the smallest in Europe in terms of production. As regards consumption, Belgium is lingering just above last place.
Production As the smallest parquet producer in Europe, Belgium accounted for 0.66% of all production in 2012. And so, in that year, Belgium produced 466,705.80 m² of parquet. Whilst the European production volume fell, the Belgian proportion increased and this involved a rise in the number of square metres (450,556m² in 2012). Belgium is still the smallest producer, just behind Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Hungary.
Consumption Belgium accounts for 3.59% of European consumption, and the country therefore consumes more than Rumania, Hungary, Czech Republic, and the Netherlands. In 2012, consumption in the FEP countries fell by no less than 5.88% to end up on 87,509,000m². Here, too, the Belgian proportion of the total consumption rose to 3.63 %, but actual consumption dropped from 3,328,952m² to 3,176,576m².

BJ PARKET
Z-PARKET Roel Geraerts founded Z-Parket in 2004 in Opgrimbie. Barely three years later, the company had to relocate to the Zwartberg industrial zone in Genk. Z-Parket has constructed modern premises there to house the new offices, production halls, and warehouse. Z-Parket has continued to grow steadily since then and has built up a distribution network all over Europe and further afield. After building the company up for almost 10 years, Roel decided to sell part of the company, and it was decided to appoint a CEO. That brought Gaylor Vantieghem to the head of the company in 2014. The company’s core business is creating the most natural and organic colours on wood. Z-Parket uses natural treatments in order to achieve the required effect in the wood in a precise, penetrative, and patient manner. The difference with this manner of treatment is that the wood retains its natural inner character. The engineered floors in the Z-Collection and the X-Collection are very much the best-sellers. In addition, Z-Parket has just launched the V-Collection, in which natural and reactive colours are finished with a waterborne varnish. This makes Z-Parket the first player in this market segment to finish natural reactive colours with a waterborne varnish. Due to the natural approach of the company and from an ecological point of view, Z-Parket felt that they owed it to themselves and to the market. Today, Z-Parket products are available in over 20 countries. +32 (0) 89 380 863 - www.z-parket.be

Sindrila specialised originally in fitting wooden terraces. Over the years, the company has developed its own fastening system under the B-Fix trademark. Since 2012, Sindrila has opted to play the B2B card and discarded the B2C aspect, namely fitting terraces. B-Fix is growing constantly. With its experience, B-Fix has launched scores of innovations in recent years. Quality, speed, and easy fitting are key words here. The core business is selling fastening systems for wooden terraces and boards. The most important product is B-Fix One/Black One, a universal fastening system for terraces (exotic wood, thermo-wood, local wood sorts, and composites). The company employs six people. Over a year ago, they opened a second production line to meet the growing demand. There is an important development in progress in North and Central America for the near future. Furthermore, B-Fix has also announced the completion of a new development, so that’s something to look forward to. +32 (0) 10 400 790 - www.b-fix.be
CSP ENGINEERING Specialist in computerisation for the parquet sector CSP is a specialist in computerisation for the parquet industry and has developed an extensive and efficient range of machines over the years. For example, there is the PARScan® parquet scanner, which measures, registers, labels, and packs parquet packages without any manual intervention. PAR-Info® can be used to add information (brochure) for the end user. There is also the PAR-Duo®, which is designed specially for glueing two-layer parquet with PU hot melt on a conveyor system. This machine makes it possible to glue up to 20m/min. on a conveyor system. It produces at a fixed or variable length and has a CNC-guided saw. PAR-Stack® is an automatic stacking machine which ensures that floorboards are stacked neatly on a pallet either loosely or packed. The machine has a capacity of up to eight packages a minute. For feeding four-sided planing machines there is the PAR-Feed® feed table. Finally, by using PAR-Stock®, the producer is aware of the number of floorboards in stock at any time. New PAR-Filler® The PAR-Filler® was launched at the end of last year and has been a truly international innovation for the parquet industry. It is an automatic machine for filling knots and cracks in parquet floorboards! All the knots and cracks in the floorboard surfaces are dusted and filled mechanically in one process, independent of the skills of the operator. All the knots, cracks, and hairline cracks in the floorboard surfaces are digitalised. Whereafter, two applicator heads work together and apply the wood filler under high pressure in exactly the right amount and spots. PAR-Filler® works in a conveyor system and is standard equipped with a feed buffer and an automatic retrieval system so that only one operator handling the machine is sufficient. For this extraordinary machine, CSP Engineering has developed CosmetiWood®, a new and ecological wood filler with unique properties. Cosmeti Wood® is ready for use, does not contain any solvents, looks nice with colours or oil, does not flake off when planing, and is very easy to sandpaper and brush. CosmetiWood® does not shrink during the drying and setting process, so it’s possible to apply the filler in one production step, even with very big knots. The production of the PAR-Filler® is now in full swing. It has attracted great attention on the international market, orders from all over EU keep coming in. +32 (0) 14 37 77 52 - www.csp-engineering.be

DECRUY
Decruy was formed in 1970 in Houthulst, West Flanders. In the early years, the company produced mainly chipboard drawers coated with synthetic oil. Over the years, they have invested further and increased their array of machines, so they can now make MDF furniture profiles (bed rails, table legs, bed posts, decorative frames, etc.). Today, their core business is making panel profiles and covering profiles with decor foils. The profiles are either sold as semi-finished items (to the furniture industry), made into products for sale in retail and wholesale (wall and ceiling panels), or made into accessories for sale in the floor industry (skirting boards and other finish profiles). Recently, they have enjoyed strong growth, mainly in this latter branch. They have licensed some new techniques to allow them to make finish profiles from the floors themselves and this has caught the eye of the major players on the market. In 2015, they achieved a turnover of €13,177,086. In the months up to and including September, they achieved turnover growth of 9%. About 90 people work at Decruy Houthulst and Decruy Transport. In 2017, Decruy will unveil a new drawer system to make it possible to assemble a three-part flat pack of drawers without using adhesive or screws. Moreover, there are also several new developments in the floor profile department. At present, Decruy already exports to Australia, North and South America, Europe, and Africa and is looking for new markets for their products. +32 (0) 51 70 85 85 - www.decruy.be

With its modern machinery and highly skilled staff, Oosterlinck has now grown into a top player on the Belgian parquet market. They produce almost everything with no outside help, ranging from solid wood floors in traditional 9mm (Old Flemish Style/ Burgundy) to wooden floors 14 and 21mm thick. Herringbone and Hungarian point are also included in their range. For five years now, the company has made its own composite parquet in both oak and exotic wood sorts such as afrormosia, wenge, and teak in 16/4 and 21/6 and in widths up to 280mm. The entire production process takes place on the company’s own premises and comprises sawing top layers, glueing, planning, and packing. All floors are offered either unfinished or finished (five collections), including distressed. They have a neat and compact company brochure which gives all the options. The company now employs ten people in its parquet division in Wingene. 80% of the production is for the Belgian market at the moment, whilst the rest goes to the Netherlands, France, and Great Britain. They intend to increase and expand exports in the coming years to include other countries. Their parquet floors are sold on the market under the ‘Greenparket’ trademark. +32 (0) 51 65 75 41 - www.oosterlinck-hout.be

RUBIO MONOCOAT/MUYLLE FACON
Muylle-Facon BVBA was formed in 1906 as a producer of putty and has grown into a leading maker of industrial chemical products. In 1962, they brought their first range of wood treatment products onto the market. In 2000, they laid the foundation for the Rubio Monocoat oil as we know it today, based on the revolutionary technology of a molecular binding which the oil enters into with the wood. At present, the Rubio Monocoat family now cover 76 countries with over 150 employees worldwide. In 2016, the company opened a second site to facilitate the ever growing demand for Rubio Monocoat products. Over the years, they have extended their range to include other optional pre-colouring and a complete range of maintenance and cleaning products, but the top product is still Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C, a still unrivalled oil which colours and protects the wood in a single coat. And so, opting for Rubio Monocoat means opting for a durable finish, taking account of the full lifespan of the wood. Today, Rubio Monocoat oil protects and colours over 30,000,00m² of wood each year. To meet the growing demand, they opened a second site in mid-2016. On that site the Rubio Monocoat production process has been further computerised and optimised to help them work faster and more efficiently. In keeping with a healthy tradition, at Domotex early next year, they will be unveiling a brand new product to keep them in line with market trends. The details are still a secret, but all will be revealed at Domotex in Hall 7 at stand B21. +32 (0) 51 30 80 54 - www.rubiomonocoat.com
HABO Habo is a fourth generation family business which has grown from a traditional stylish furniture manufacturer. For over 35 years, they’ve been producing traditional solid parquet. In 2011, they also launched the production of multi-layer parquet. A love of wood and a passion for quality awareness are the main features of their company. Habo processes French oak and buys it directly from about 30 sawmills in France. Their regular partners are essential for supplying permanent quality. These purchases are dried under their own supervision at Chêne de France in Avoine. A careful and balanced drying process is the first step towards producing quality parquet. Apart from French oak, they also offer an extensive range of exotic wood sorts. They have considerable stocks at their disposal so that they can supply a wide range of wood and parquet sorts at short notice. In their branches at Genk (Belgium) and Weert (the Netherlands) they produce about 250,000m² of parquet per annum. They invest constantly to keep their machinery up to date and efficient. Together with their parquet wholesalers Albers and Holz Bois, they form a closely knit team of 40 reliable and enthusiastic employees. +32 (0) 89 329 580 - www.holzbois.be
