One of the best ways to fall in love with your home all over again is to feel happy and comfortable in the space you’re in. When you look around, the goal is contentment, appreciation of the space’s design, and satisfaction with its overall look. That can be tough with a messy or cluttered
1. Clean Up and Clear Out You simply cannot start decluttering your home without cleaning up and clearing out the space you’re planning to focus on. To help you stay on track, it’s best to choose one area at a time to target, like a closet, entryway, or bathroom cabinet. This way, you won’t feel overwhelmed by the amount of work there might be! Start working your way through your items and determine what you need to keep and what you can donate or throw away. If you’re not sure whether you should keep something, ask yourself how often you use it, what purpose it serves, and what value it offers you in your day-to-day life. Then make a decision, and set it aside to your “keep” or “throw away” pile. Once you’ve completed this step, you’re ready to move onto creating a beautiful storage space.

Add New Shelving and Container Storage Once you’ve got a hold on what you plan to keep versus what you plan to get rid of, it’s time to start adding shelving and container storage that work for your items. Take a look at what you have—do you see a variety of heights, widths, and lengths, or are your items more similar in shape and size? Depending on what you have and the space available, it’s important to place your shelving in a functional manner, so keep this in mind when choosing a shelving style. Measure the space between the shelves and purchase containers that fit. Keep like items together and invest in a variety of container sizes if you have items that get lost easily. Remember, you can always put them in larger containers if you need to.

Think Cabinetry and Drawers Although open and airy nightstands and furniture pieces offer a stunning look to many homes, they aren’t the ideal solution when it comes to storage. If your home is lacking in the storage area and you’re looking for a way to solve that problem, think about switching out furniture that doesn’t offer you any hidden storage. Nightstands with three or more drawers, a pop-up coffee table, an entryway with cabinetry and hooks, or an open shelf with a new basket can quickly transform into the storage you need. Simply take inventory of what you have room for and what you can replace, and you’ll be on your way to finding room for all of your things. Design At Home | 15

Create New Space Where Available It’s one thing to declutter and rearrange your current storage situation but another to increase your storage by adding a completely new space. And it doesn’t have to be a complete overhaul of your home! Although large storage projects are ideal, additional storage space examples like a new pantry, custom drawers, a closet organizer, a new built-in cabinet, or a nook in an otherwise unused corner can be equally as useful. Think about it—you probably have an area of your home that could use some feature cabinetry or drawers, offering you a few extra spaces for those tough-to-hide items. For some added fun, you could even add an accent color or accent wall to your home if you find that the area could benefit from it. You simply never know what you can create with a little storage imagination.

5. Ensure Every Item Has a Home Let’s face it—everyone has those things that end up sitting on the counter for days on end, especially if you just don’t know where to put them. Keys, mail, and miscellaneous household items are perfect examples of things that add up and look chaotic. Whether it’s your living room coffee table or a hallway closet that’s acting as a makeshift catchall, there is an easy way to take it from cluttered to clean and find a place to put every single thing.

Q:
Tell us a little bit about the purpose behind the design of this house.
A:
This was a complete gut and remodel project for us. Our intention was to design it as a second home—not just a cabin or a vacation home—so I approached the design just like I did for our more permanent home. The only twist was that this house is very geared toward entertaining—lots of dogs and kids and wet bathing suits. So getting as many “heads in beds” as possible was important, as was using beautiful but durable products so that I wouldn’t be fretting all the time over something getting damaged.
Q:
We love this fresh take on a lake home style. How did you decide on this design style, and how did you personalize it to your own taste?
A:
My permanent home leans more contemporary and is very colorful. I love an all-neutral style and the farmhouse aesthetic, so I took this opportunity to dive into it. The vintage rugs throughout the house were my color contribution but in a gritty, subdued way that I love. Having grown up in Long Island, NY, I always wanted a home with shiplap walls, so that was one of the first decisions I made.

Q:
This is a unique project because the home was created specifically for you, Kelly. Given your experience in designing many other projects, what were some must-haves that you knew you’d want to incorporate into your space?
A:
I would never hear the end of it from my husband and kids if the house was beautiful but not super comfortable. I’m a stickler for quality upholstered furniture and comfortable beds with nice bedding. I’m also an amateur art collector, so having original art all over the house—and being able to tell the story of how it came to be or where and why I bought it—was important to me.
Q:
We sense a theme in the living room, with the cowhide rug and the cow artwork hanging above the fireplace. Tell us about your inspiration behind the cow-print details in this room.
A:
Our home is up the street from an old rundown farm, which may be a turnoff for some people, but it brings back many childhood memories for me. We go on walks and talk to the cows and feed the horses. Years before, I had seen the work of Atlanta artist Dawn Raulet and knew I wanted to commission a piece from her. The entire fireplace wall was designed around that art. I chose the hide rug because it’s very durable and an interesting contrast to the wool rug that is in the next area over.
Q:
This reading nook is especially genius, with its cozy blankets and charming wood-framed photos. How do you go about designing hidden spaces for hobbies in homes with a smaller footprint?
A:
Remember, “heads in beds” was the name of the game! I love a trundle bed for extra guests. They don’t take up much room and can double as a TV sofa. I always include a small table for a drink of water and a phone or book, plus a good reading light for bedtime.

Q:
We love everything about the kitchen, from the trendy subway tile to the bronze light fixtures and rattan bar stools. What are some things you consider when designing a kitchen for multiple guests?
A:
This kitchen footprint is actually quite small, so I gained a lot of storage opportunities by having the floating shelves and the tall pantry cabinets on the far wall. With so many guests, they need to be able to serve themselves and help empty the dishwasher, so the floating shelves with our everyday dishes make it really easy. I always invest in oversized, interesting pendant lights over an island because they are like art to me. I got the idea for the vintage bread board gallery from a cute café in Charleston, SC, and I spent a year finding them one by one at antique stores, flea markets, and antique salvage stores. By putting legs on the island, we were able to squeeze in one more counter stool at the end, so now we can fit our family of four. If I’m going to cook for you, you need to hang out at the island and talk to me!
Q:
How did you choose this beautiful flooring that’s installed throughout the home?
A:
I was looking for a floor that was durable, plus scratch resistant, stain resistant and waterproof, so I found a quality luxury vinyl tile that looks just like hardwood. It was one of the best decisions we made for the house.
Q:
There’s so much texture and color throughout the double-bed guest room. How did you decide on this almost Moroccan color scheme and successfully blend contemporary style with vintage details?
A:
If you are going with an all-neutral aesthetic, texture is the most important element. I had to buy
everything new for this home, but I didn’t want it to look new. I also think that the best designs mix old and new because a house needs to have a soul and tell a story, even if it is new. I had collected the vintage trunks years ago—they hold extra sheets, blankets, and pillows—because when you are my guest, you change your sheets before you leave. The contemporary artwork came to be because, once again, I fell in love with an artist—this time, it was Kimberly Zukley out of Alabama.

Q:
The master suite is gorgeously styled and tailored to your own taste. How do you create a space that’s unique to your style and also functions well?
A:
I have to have a super comfortable bed and quality sheets, coverlets, and pillows as well as 150-watt reading lights and pretty art to look at when I lie in bed. These are my prerequisites. Once those details are figured out, it’s just a matter of deciding on colors and finishes.
Q:
There are so many outdoor spaces at this lake house. How do you make the most of the outdoor space in a home that’s designated for lake activities?
A:
The nice thing about this house is that it’s not that big, but there are lots of places to escape. Sometimes, I might want to be doing yoga while others are reading or making cocktails and food. We made sure there was a variety of seating (including hammocks) and tables, so every porch area is usable in some way.

The saying “it’s all black and white” implies simplicity that borders on basic, but when it comes to interior design and decor, a black and white color palette is anything but boring. Black and white provide the ultimate in versatility, taking your interiors from fresh and airy to bold and dramatic simply by shifting the saturation of each hue. This palette is versatile and easily adaptable, with the ability to jump between styles and eras with ease. Some would even say that black and white are more than just colors—they are a motif in their own right.

So how do you ensure your black-and-white interior doesn’t land in dreaded “basic” or boring territory? Before we dig in, let’s clarify one thing: despite my references to them as “colors,” black and white are technically not representatives of the rainbow at all. Without getting too deep in the weeds, colors contain wavelengths. White contains all wavelengths, whereas black is the absence of visible light. With that out of the way, here are some of my favorite ways to make a blackand-white palette shine.

BLACK AND WHITE
50 Shades of Black and White Black and white might seem limited at first glance, but there are different degrees, shades, and tones of each. These are not true black and white but are tinged with a rainbow of other hues. Consider black with midnight blue or eggplant undertones, or white with a barely there whisper of cream or pink. You can bring depth to basic black and white by layering different tones and shades within the space, similar to the principles of layering texture and finish. Just pay attention to the “temperature” and stay consistent: cool with cool whites and, warm with warm whites. By juxtaposing warm tones with cool ones, you can compromise the color, making some blacks appear blue or brown, or some whites appear yellow. We’ve already briefly mentioned texture and finish, so let’s continue on this track. Glossy surfaces reflect light, amplifying it in a space. Meanwhile, matte finishes absorb light, creating a warm, velvety effect. Although white is white, combining a high-gloss white with a matte one brings depth to your space without having to stray from your monochromatic color palette.

The 60-30-10 Rule When designing a black-and-white room, I apply the same rule of proportions that I use when going full color. It’s the 60-30-10 rule, and it actually works. First, choose your principal color–in this case, black or white. While white rooms are more common and less risky, a black room can be rewarding if you’re looking to make a bold statement. In any case, your principal color will be the main one, occupying approximately 60 percent of your space. This usually includes largescale elements, such as the walls and floors. If you choose white as your principal color, then black is the secondary color, which accounts for 30 percent of the space. This may include a feature wall, a rug and a sofa.

Last but not least, the remaining 10 percent is your accent color because even a black-and-white room needs a pop of color. This pop can appear in accessories, accent pillows and throws, and even small furniture items, like an ottoman or a painted side table. Because accessories are easy and economical to replace and trends come and go, this last 10 percent can satisfy your cravings for the trend du jour without going all in or spending a small fortune. For me I enjoy designing with black and white. They may be polar opposites but the end game is perfect harmony. Although classic by all accounts, a black-and-white color palette is modern and timeless all at once. Here’s to simplicity at its best!

For many of us, the remote work trend is here to stay, after almost two years of that “temporary” workstation in your home—gradually growing and evolving into what’s become an unsightly and unruly pile of paper and clutter. Perhaps this messy workstation has taken over your dining room table, the kitchen island, or a spot in your bedroom. Unsurprisingly, the chaos of your ad hoc work area is affecting your life. Research shows that clutter negatively weighs on anxiety levels, stress, appetite, and sleep—not to mention the uninspiring aesthetic of this “war zone,” which you may be on the losing end of. But you don’t have to wave the white flag and surrender to the madness. Here’s some advice that I’ve found to be helpful in my designs to help lift that weight so that you can work (and live) free!

Where to Locate Your Office in Your Home Although you can’t deny the flexibility and convenience of working from home, I’m a huge believer in the separation of professional and personal space. This provides privacy while working as well as the opportunity to shut the door on your workday and get some wellearned R&R. For this reason, I always encourage my clients to carve out a dedicated office area in their home. If you have a whole room to spare, with a door and a few other key essentials that I’ll get into, all the better. But remember, even where space is limited, you can still have a home office within a larger area of the home that brings function while meeting your aesthetic expectations. As in real estate, when it comes to your home office, location is everything. Try to choose a space in your home that’s separated from foot traffic. People coming and going via the main entrance, kids looking for snacks and backpacks, or the dog running laps around you can be counterproductive when you’re trying to focus, take a call, or participate in a virtual meeting. Find a quiet location away from the hustle and bustle, such as a spare bedroom, a spot in the basement, or a corner where you can tuck in and plug in for your workday. If you’re setting up shop in a larger, open-concept living area, as is often the case in many modern homes with open floor plans, you can define your office area by adding a rug that’s large enough to accommodate your desk and a few key pieces of office furniture. This anchors the area that’s delineated for office use. Then, create some separation and storage by adding a view-through bookcase between the work space and living area. This will allow light to flow through while adding some privacy.

8 Office Essentials Once you’ve figured out the “where” of your home office, determine what you’ll need to get the job done. Let’s focus on function first. Every office needs a desk, a chair, storage, lighting, and, ideally, a door to close come 5 p.m. However, depending on your role, you may also need to accommodate additional equipment, such as multiple computer monitors, a drafting table, and, if you host meetings, a sitting area for colleagues or clients. Let’s start with lighting. Arguably, this is the most important element in the room. Poor lighting is the culprit behind headaches and strained eyes, making it all but impossible to actually get any work done! Incorporate a layered lighting plan into your design, which includes ambient lighting, task lighting, and, if you choose, accent lighting. And if you have any natural light via a window, maximize that, too. If you’re in a basement or a dark corner, just ensure you have sufficient ambient lighting, which is the general overhead illumination in a space. Recessed lights are a great option. Task lighting, often in the form of a desk lamp or a floor lamp, would light your work area. Finally, accent lighting isn’t an essential per se, but it is a nice touch that works wonders for the ambiance of the space. Use it to highlight a collection of books, your favorite artwork, or some of your own work! The next office essential is your desk and, by association, the chair. The biggest consideration for
the desk is its dimensions—size and height. However, the desk chair is often underestimated. If you sit for long periods, be sure to give this some careful thought. It would be wise to take the chair for a “test drive” if possible. Even with online reviews, it can be difficult to gauge comfort from a photo and written description. Take a seat and consider support, adjustability, and even how you move as you work (think swivel seat or a chair on wheels.) Storage space is always near the top of the list. One thing I’ve learned as a designer is that you can never have enough. “Stuff” accumulates quickly, so be sure to declutter regularly and plan to store the rest. Great storage areas don’t happen by chance. Put some thought into it. Storage solutions may include shelves, bookcases, filing cabinets, and the like. If your office is in a living area, be sure to factor style into your criteria, but more on that later!

The world has gone digital, and so can your filing system. Say goodbye to all that paperwork by transitioning to digital files that can be saved on your computer or cloud. This is a huge space-saver, not to mention it saves on paper and printing costs and is more environmentally friendly. Just do all your due diligence when it comes to backup and security! Last but not least, style. And yes, it’s on my list of office essentials. I firmly believe that every room in the home should be aesthetically pleasing, even “chore” rooms. In fact, it is here that I think some extra style could really work wonders: the laundry room, pantry, and, yes, the office. Think of it as being like a great business suit. Choose what inspires you because this can help yield some of your best work.

Try to work with your home’s existing aesthetic. That’s not to say the room needs to be a carbon copy of its neighbors. Take cues from your home’s color scheme and style, but celebrate this unique part of the home with office-esque elements that reflect your professional persona. Your home office can be everything you need functionally and everything you want aesthetically, regardless of its size. And there’s no reason it can’t be. If you need assistance, engage a designer, and there’s no shortage of interior decorating websites, magazines, and social media accounts—just a click away. Create your own inspiration board and put your vision into practice. Then, get busy! Of course, take a few moments throughout the day to put your feet up, look around, and take it all in. After all, you’ve earned it.

As a designer, I approach every new project from various perspectives. What is the main purpose of the space? Who will be using it, predominantly and occasionally? And what’s trending in the broader world of design and décor? The answers are unique to every project and form the basis of every design, with the potential to go in a million different directions. In this case, family living dictated an aesthetic of modern farmhouse meets Old-World European charm, with every detail thoughtfully curated to reflect this perfect union of styles. Here’s how we got the look. We washed the entire home in a classic color palette and timeless finishes because regardless of what’s “trending” or the chosen style for a particular space, longevity always seems to be a common goal when it comes to home renovations. For our modern farmhouse, we started with an archetypal white palette representing simplicity, cleanliness, and order. We gave the classic hue a newfangled twist with a whisper of warm undertones to usher in a basic, flat design into the present era. By adding dimension to this simple backdrop, we layered in organic elements in the form of muted earthy colors and natural wood and materials in a biophilic design that offers something for everyone, from the dream kitchen to the backyard pool and green space. This approach allowed us to stay true to our chosen aesthetic while balancing the clients’ functional needs and artistic goals. Echoing in the background was the homeowner’s love of travel and their particular penchant for Italy, which we personified with European influences in our plans for this dream home.

On entry, it’s love at first sight with this stunning foyer. The gleaming primrose mirror, wall millwork, and herringbone flooring magnify the room with a grandiose appeal. Despite this showy first impression, the home has a humble casualness about it that draws you in. As you move through the home, seamless transitions take you between spaces without skipping a beat. Meanwhile, each room—and each space within them—has been designed with purpose and a unique flair. The home’s open floor plan encourages a social atmosphere that aligns with the clients’ expressed desire for a family-friendly home. In the living room, we focused on natural textures, such as clay, wood, and natural stone, which lend Old-World, artisanal touches throughout. The overall vibe can best be described as “homey” and a place where residents and guests always feel welcome and at ease.

Textiles play an important role in the overall ambiance, adding layers of visual interest, warmth, and “touchability.” The farmhouse aesthetic loves organic and naturally derived materials, such as linen (which we used) as well as wool, cotton, hemp, or raw silk. Underfoot, a traditionalstyle area rug delineates a sitting area in front of the fireplace—a natural gathering place and focal point in any home and certainly in this one. Window coverings take a simple form, framing without abstracting the natural light or the views.

The kitchen is the showpiece of the space, as is often the case. However, the kitchen is even more critical in a farmhouse design, which focuses on history, tradition, and the bygone days when most of the “living” in a house was done in this one room. Indeed, the kitchen has undergone a major evolution through the centuries, but as our lifestyles have shifted since the pandemic, we may have come full circle to a space that serves many more needs and functions than just cooking and eating. This particular kitchen is a stunning space to live, entertain, work, and store daily essentials and occasional items. From an aesthetic perspective, natural marble countertops, a porcelain farmhouse sink, and a satin brass faucet echo a distinctly Euro farmhouse feel. Warm wood details and continuous honey-hued floors keep things light and warm. But perhaps the biggest standout feature is one that you can’t see immediately: storage space.

Storage (or lack thereof) ranks right up there as one of the top reasons most homes “don’t work” for my clients anymore. Think about it: your storage needs have likely changed in the past five years, whether due to changes in lifestyle or family structure. And if you’re renovating a kitchen, you’ll want to plan at least 10 to 15 years in the future or more. This means anticipating your storage requirements. To balance the clients’ functional needs and aesthetic goals, we used a combination of open and closed cabinets and shelves, which not only supply valuable storage space but also add visual interest and help tell a story. This space offers ample storage behind closed doors by way of kitchen cabinets and a pantry. For a busy family, this offers an accessible yet hidden place to stow away every culinary essential and a few extras, too.

We maintained a simple, streamlined look by cladding the fridge in matching panels. We also employed open shelves and an opportunity to showcase collected items, beautiful objects, and unique treasures. This particular kitchen afforded the luxury of space, so the design incorporates a pantry in one anteroom and an office in another. These dedicated utilitarian spaces allowed us to organize the family’s activities into designated areas, bringing order to a space that’s commonly characterized by daily chaos. The pantry and office space benefitted from the home’s brand of farmhouse charm, wrapped in a natural stone backsplash and wood display shelves lined with thoughtfully selected accessories.

The primary bedroom should serve as an escape from the world, so we treated it as such with a unique flair all its own. The bold floral wallpaper is an instant attention grabber, adding a modern edge with a gentle nod to tradition. The upholstered headboard and pillows bring a touch of softness and luxury, offset by the simplicity of natural wood in the furniture and the floor. The adjacent ensuite features a beautiful palette of natural linen, organic wooden objects, and real marble with hints of pink picked up from the bedroom wallpaper and the main living areas downstairs. Although the sleeping quarters are physically separated, they are still very much connected through a cohesive palette of colors and materials. This home’s Old-World European style achieves a sense of warmth and harmony through textiles and texture, vintage décor, natural wood, stone, and tile. Meanwhile, the modern farmhouse theme comes to life through the palette throughout the home, such as warm white, natural wood, and soft gold and black punctuation points. In every beautiful home, the fine finishing details don’t just happen by chance. Rather, they are a product of careful planning and skilled execution.
