highliting local vintage culture to reinvigorate urban area

collaboration with Joseph Murguido (Master Plan)

The Interblock proposal seeks to merge two existing urban networks within Downtown Miami, parks and waterfront, and link the given site to the immediate sorrounding public space. By introducing the appeal of the waterfront into an urban zone and extending existing green networks to meet the coastal network, an exchange is created which drives the public core of the Interblock. The many pockets of parks and water features create urban pauses for recreation in a pedestrian-oriented promenade. Low-rise podiums relate to the sorrounding buildings, while also accentuating the public core and movement towards the waterfront. The high-rise forms complement the existing Miami skyline by filling a void between two existing zones of towers.

The second part of the project focuses on a specific area of the master plan. Taking advantage of the proximity to the waterfront and to vaious circulation arteries, a multivalent space is used as a connecting core for other programs. The multi-event space serves as both a parking garage and a flexible space that can be used by the attached programs: Film Archive, Black Box Theater, and Cinema Pods, all of which ceebrate the history of film culture in Miami.

develop and present monograph to promote Master Plan

The CollegeTown area constitutes of the area enclosed by W. Gaines St. and St. Augustine St. to the South and North, and by S. Woodwards Ave. and Collier St. to the West and East. The Master Plan needed to integrated the various projects, built and planned, to a single collective in order to produce digital models and views for monograph. The booklet proposal aimed to describe and promote future phases of development for the area. All work was done as design intern under the supervision of the Patrick Hodges Land Studio.

densifying a small town using the unique character of its college culture

collaboration with Joey Murguido

The Seminary Silos project explores the idea of introducing mid-rise mixed-use complexes to reinvigorate a once bustling urban business corridor. It also proposes a more densely concentrated housing trend to push for more involvement in mass public transit as the main option for transportation. The design is driven by the industrial appeal of the existing water tower in the area and celebrating it as a site landmark. Buildings characteristically similar to industrial silos are introduced to relate to the water tower and act as program nodes for the different areas of the site. Housing, commercial, retail, and public programs all sorround a silo node and establish a permeable relationship to allow programs to flow in and out of the construct.

Vigia Del Fuerte, Colombia

highliting local vintage culture to reinvigorate urban area

collaboration with Dominic Feng, Joel Corazon, Alyson Silva, Chris Franco, David Catanac, Zhan Tong, Zhou Xiaopo, Juan Monsalve, Maria Riveros, Junda He, Jia Guannan, Jennifer Russell, Jefrall Betancourt,Joseph Murguido

This collaborative studio effort designed a community center where the indigenous population of Northwest Colombia, the Embera, can be housed during their interaction months with the AfroColombian town of Vigia del Fuerte. The design is derived from the native dwelling structure constructed by the Embera. The new construct is then used as a module that can adapt to the various programmatic needs of the Embera community and adding spaces where a symbiotic relationship can be established between the Afro-Colombian and the Embera cultures.

Rainfall is heaviest on the west coast and in the Andean area; rainy and dry seasons, or “winter” and “summer,” generally alternate in three-month cycles, as in Bogotá, where precipitation occurs most heavily and consistently during the periods of April to June and October to December. Northern areas have only one long rainy season, from May through October. The annual average rainfall is 107 cm (42 in). Longitudinal Section through dwellings and voids

Corner Curve critic | Stephen Belton

exploring assembly joints with computer-aided technology

collaboration with David Catanach

Each furniture piece is fabricated from Baltic Birch Plywood, the chair and table are inspired by two main ideas, use a single piece of wood to create an individual object, and have the piece bend or fold against itself. Both the chair and table utilize special cornercurve joints that allows one plane to fold on to itself. The cornercurve joint’s strength comes form multiple finger joints, which allow for a higher surface area of connection. The joint is milled in kerfs, so that the fingers do not pass all the way through the wood, allowing for a curve to be made on the outside of the joint. The curve left over from this joint hides the finger joints and gives the impresion of a smooth seamless joint.

39

Corner Treatment Tests

Three types of bending techniques were tested in order to find the best method for creating the cornercurve joint. Three sets of test pieces were cut on a CNC mill. Varying depths of 1/16”. 3/32”, and 1/8” were left on the pieces to allow the joint to curve. The first set was bent into shape without treating the wood at all, the second was soaked in water, and the third set was steamed.

Charleston, SC

layering culture and history through tectonics

The project requires both an institution for students in the culinary arts, and an inviting place where local businesses are able to intern students into their local establishments. Programmatically, the construct takes into account the built context’s layout; businesses facing East Bay Street located at ground level, while eateries on perpendicular streets are located on higher floors, not only protecting from flood zones, but also providing the occupant with a raised view of the Charleston cityscape. The façade also relates to the materiality of historic Charleston. A brick outer membrane reacts to this style, mimicking the construction materials used in the area; while the interior membrane reflects characteristics of modern institutions.

The faรงade system creates an opportunity for a double membrane, where peripheral circulation can be niched between the two membranes, creating a playful relationship of interior and exterior, and actively inviting street traffic into the interior plaza.
