Do a shot that’s good for you! A shot of bitters that is. Thanksgiving and Halloween may be over, but fall is a time of heartier meals that often leave us feeling full and sluggish. Bitters promote good digestion and liver health, making them the perfect aperitif to any meal. A teaspoon is all you need, but the taste, as the name implies, is rather bitter so we recommend you mix it with water. Our favourite way to prepare for a big meal is to do a ‘Maria Bomb.’ Recipe below.

Seasonal Eats

[Fall – Issue 11 Volume 2]

Eating local food that’s in season makes a lot of sense, not only can it save you money, but it is more nutritious as well. Instead of going to your grocery store and buying an out-of-season and expensive pineapple in the middle of November, why not search out a local farmer’s market and pick out a squash to make the delicious soup below. When you buy local, the food has ripened when and where it is supposed to, allowing more of the nutrients to remain intact. Whereas when you buy your produce at the grocery store, it tends to have less flavour because it loses its flavour due to the chilling, shipping and sitting in a warehouse. Eating seasonally doesn’t mean less variety, there are still lots of delicious options to choose from. To find a local farmer’s market near you, visit www.localharvest.org.

Healthy Butternut Squash Soup After visiting your local farmer’s market and selecting the perfect butternut squash, delve into making this delicious soup, found on lickmyspoon.com.. We made one small change at the end and drizzled ours with Flora’s Optimal Omegas instead of Olive Oil for an added Omega 3-6-9 boost.

Preparation:

Ingredients:

1.

Preheat oven to 450 F.

2.

1 butternut squash

Peel, de-seed, and dice the squash and onion into roughly 1-inch pieces.

1 yellow onion

3.

Place the squash and onion onto a foil-lined baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and season with a generous pinch of salt and pepper. Roast in oven for 45-50 minutes until squash is golden and fork-tender.

32 oz. organic chicken/vegetable broth

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon Flora Optimal Omegas

Salt and pepper to taste

4.

In a large pot, bring the broth to a simmer. Add the roasted veggies. Puree using an immersion blender, regular blender, or food processor.

5.

Finish with a drizzle of Flora Optimal Omegas and enjoy!

It’s Daylight Savings Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour this Sunday.
