Prevent heart disease with these 3 simple tips: We all know that February is the month for love, but it’s also heart month in Canada. Give your heart some TLC with these easy tips:

1. Eat Fat The good kind called monounsaturated fat. Foods loaded with these healthy fats include avocados, nuts, and fatty fish like salmon, sardines and anchovies. These heart-friendly foods help lower your level of bad cholesterol — the waxy, artery-plugging stuff that can bring on a heart attack. 2. Workout… faster Stop slaving away on the treadmill for 45 minutes at a time, and try high intensity workouts for less time. Try doing 8 rounds of sprints

for 20 seconds, with 10 seconds rest between each round. This effective training method is called Tabata, and will whip you right into shape. 3. Take a break. Life can be stressful, especially at work. A hard day at the office increases the amount of adrenaline and cortisol in your body. High levels of these stress hormones increase your blood-pressure rate, which over time hardens your arteries. So take a load off with a relaxing walk in the park or a long soak in the tub.

Eat your green Red veggies! Don’t get us wrong here, green vegetables are great, but red vegetables can be just as nutritious. The ultimate all-star is the beet. Don’t let the grungy-looking roots throw you off. Beets are naturally sweeter than any other vegetable, and they pack a ton of flavour underneath their rugged exterior. You can think of beets as red spinach. They are rich in nutrients like folate and betaine that promote a healthy heart, and can reduce the thickening of arterial walls in those individuals at high risk of cardiovascular disease. And if you look really close, beets kind of look like a heart, coincidence? We don’t think so. The best way to eat beets is raw. They taste great shaved into a salad, or thrown into a smoothie. Beets also taste great roasted in the oven with a little grapeseed oil drizzled on top and salt and pepper. Most of the time the beet top greens will be attached, and these are packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Simply substitute for any other green in salads, soups or stews.

You gotta get out more We know it’s cold outside, but that’s no excuse not to get out. Take these 3 tips to get you active this winter:

1. Always keep a pair of running or comfortable walking shoes in the trunk of your car, so that you are always prepared for a walking adventure. 2. Park as far away from your destination as possible; whether it is work or the mall, you will be surprised how all those extra steps outside add up. 3. Play in the snow! Snowshoeing is a great low-impact exercise that is great for all ages, making it a great family activity. If you don’t own a pair, rentals are affordable, and depending on the mountain, hot chocolate is often included. Who doesn’t love that?
