A CLOCKWORK ORANGE
HOW TO BE A WOMAN
I chose to do A Clockwork Orange because I think it is ingrained into British culture as being a book that everyone has read at some point. Creating a cover for a well known book is hard because everyone has their own idea of the characters and some of the underlying plot. This is one of the competitions that I would love to win because it is one of my aims to work with penguin at some point. My interpretation of A Clockwork Orange made the cover more abstract and about following a rule wrong. The cover is Swiss in many ways but taken away from the clean style by being hand done and not in straight lines. The use of one single orange line was to show the one who created this rule. The back then follows some of the lines. It took me a long time to come to this resolution but I feel the time spent on it has made an interesting and dynamic cover that is different to other covers that have been made for this book in previous years.
How To Be A Woman was a cover that I had thought a lot about, but hadn’t had an idea that would work. The more I thought about it I thought about different aspects that women are ‘known’ for. From this came the idea of an all seeing eye that looked like a breast. The simple and clean style is a bold choice, throughout the process I wanted to place more onto the cover, but the simplicity is beautiful to me. The colour ways where also experimented with, but black and white keep it ‘classy’. This idea took me a while to think of, and came to me while watching a Caitlin Moran comedy show. Her comedy can be tongue in cheek and I feel that this cover shows that. The whole wrap around is in keeping with the style utilising white space. One of the biggest regrets that I have is that the book need the extra information on the front. Previous designs didnt allow for this. The final design is something I am pleased with and hopeful for it getting noticed.
YCN UCC COFFEE
UCC Coffee was an obvious choice for me, I have a great passion for coffee and see a lot of different packaging for the products. I personal do look for something that responsible in sourcing, so have a fairly vast knowledge of what is available. When looking at other packaging you could see that they all had a constant theme of being natural scenes on the packet with blacks against it. This look is one that is luxurious but doesn’t convey the zest of the product. I wanted to produce something that was young and new. The colours I chose correspond with the flags that the coffee has been sourced from and then abstract shapes reflecting the landscape. This combined with the clean typographic treatment created a product that would fit into the aesthetic of most coffee shops as well as homes. Keeping the packets to the current white ones was a choice based on the market being flooded by brown bags to show that something is responsible, this is so popular that it isn’t as trusted as a feature as it used to be. I wanted to convey the inspirational ability of coffee.
The bright colours on the white give a crisp and awake feel. The different packets work really well as a set together using some of the same shapes as well as all being flat designs that work well over collateral. This is one of the best product design project that I have ever personally done. This brief has thought and concept behind the idea as well as being interesting as a final outcome. The concept is clear, but done in a tasteful way. This is one of the briefs that I would be most disappointed if I did not get recognised for it, because it is a good resolution.
D&AD WWF
WWF was the collaborative brief that I did. Personally I wasn’t drawn to any of the briefs, where as my partner Emily was really keen to do WWF, I feel that our idea was a strong one, if not a controversial one. The idea of doing something more controversial for a competition brief was something I was interested in. I used the opportunity to bounce ideas off someone else who was up to date and in the loop as well as being crucial in the ideas process. The idea is one that we had to bring down in a lot of different ways. To begin with it was all about getting people to commit suicide so that the earth could thrive on its own and let another species rule. This in principle is a good idea and does work, but in practice, you are either asking for mass suicide or genocide, which is frowned upon by most people, if not all. This idea then did evolve in asking to people to do the worst then feeling that anything else is easy to do. There where some difficulties running through the project because of conflicting schedules for work and university, but we made it work around it. The other issue
that we found was linking together all aspects of the campaign. We wanted to fit really two different campaigns together. This resulted in the posters being altered to fit with the magazine more. In hindsight there are some changes that could have been made to the cover so it fitted in better with the posters as well, but this was more difficult as they where very illustration lead and took a long time to get done. I feel that this isn’t my strongest shot at getting recognised by a competition but will have the judges at least talking about our work, which is something. When entering our work we also placed it in for a white pencil, which is the award for doing environmental good, so we could even get a white pencil simply for having a slightly dark view on the competition.

T-SHIRT DESIGN
LATINO FILM FESTIVAL POSTER
This was an opportunity that was brought to me by my dad who works with the charity, it was one that I was keen on though. Its an exciting opportunity to put my work out their and work with a different style. I went through a couple of different stages before this final design, it is one that works well for being bold and young. I tried using more subtle designs but the charity wanted something bold and dynamic for the younger generation. This was a much longer process then I was expecting but came to a good resolution. Working with the terminology used by the correspondents was difficult as they would recommend things they did not want. If I had chance to do the design I would possibly put more detail into the image, but it works well for being bold and clear.
Latino Film Festival was an brief that I saw on the module page. It was something a little bit different to what I had normally done and gave opportunity to do a project that was a bit more art based. Its was really refreshing to do a real drawing that wouldn’t be heavily edited to get the final product. My final composition is interesting and draws in the eye while still being informative. It fills out all the essentials of a good poster. I didn’t get in for the deadline on this work, I sent it to them anyway to see if they would accept it, I still haven’t heard back and am not hopeful. I learnt a lot from handing in late on this piece and haven’t done it since.

PRINT FAIR
POSTER COMPETITION
The print fair is an opportunity that myself, Amelia and Izzie all got when we emailed Munro House about being apart of the fair. It was a great opportunity to see how our work is received in a more public hemisphere. Print making is something that I really love doing and am competent with. The opportunity lead to less then I would have hoped but it was a great way of building up some contacts. This was an exercise in being social and getting contacts as much as it was about selling work. The prints that I brought to the gallery are something that I could improve, just in how I did the negatives, but this is something I now know for the future.
This was in the classroom, a quick task to make some art for the frames in the room. There where a fair amount of entries for this. I chose to place this work in because it is a little different as well as being slightly useful in someways. I felt it was interesting designing something informative but placing the design first. I sadly did not get my poster in one of the frames. I believe that my personal interpretation of this brief was a bit wrong. I felt that it should be something slightly informative that was on the wall, but the designs that won weren’t. If I had the time again I personally would change my interpretation of the brief. For the idea that I had I feel I produced a good final outcome, it is simply that my ideas where in the wrong place.
