EACH YEAR SEVERAL THOUSAND EARTHQUAKES SHAKE THE WORLD. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PREDICT THE EXACT TIME AND INTENSITY OF SUCH AN EVENT, EVEN WITH THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY. EARTHQUAKES POSE A MAJOR THREAT TO THE EUROPEAN SIDE OF THE MEGACITY ISTANBUL. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY’S INFRASTRUCTURE HAS BEEN UNABLE TO KEEP PACE WITH RAPID MIGRATION, OR RATHER THE URBANISATION ASSOCIATED WITH THIS. HENCE MOST INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDINGS IN THIS REGION ARE BARELY CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING EARTHQUAKES. A STRATEGY SUGGESTED BY THE SCUS (STUDIO FOR CRISES IN URBAN SPACES) IS TO ESTABLISH A NETWORK OF MAINLY EARTHQUAKE-PROOF INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDINGS. THIS NETWORK OF PUBLIC BUILDINGS, WHICH CREATE A SENSE OF IDENTITY, BECOMES ROOTED IN ITS IMMEDIATE ENVIRONMENT, AFFECTING IT IN VARIOUS WAYS OVER TIME. THE NETWORK ENHANCES THE IDENTITY OF A CITY THAT HAS ALREADY BECOME HIGHLY DECENTRALISED TODAY. THE INFRASTRUCTURE BUILDINGS SHOULD BE UNDERPINNED BY THE THREE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES: ‘CATALYSER’ OF THE ENVIRONMENT, ‘PREVENTION AND PREPAREDNESS’ (BUILDING IS ALREADY BEING USED AND DEVELOPED BEFORE A CRISIS) AND ‘BUILD BACK BETTER’ (RECONSTRUCTION ORIENTED TOWARDS THE EVENT THAT OCCURRED). THE TYPOLOGY OF THE BUILDINGS MUST REMAIN DYNAMIC SINCE IT MUST FUNCTION IN EVERYDAY LIFE AS WELL AS IN A CRISIS. TECHNICAL AND SOCIAL INFRASTRUCTURES ARE COMBINED TO FORM HYBRID STRUCTURES. IN THE EVENT OF A CRISIS THE BUILDINGS REVERT TO THEIR ORIGINAL FUNCTION. FOR THE FIRST TEN DAYS THEY SUPPORT THE INHABITANTS LIVING OR WORKING THERE AS SELF-SUFFICIENT, FUNCTIONING SYSTEMS. FROM THEN ON THE BUILDINGS SUPPORT THE CLEARING-UP AND RECONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS.

ISTANBUL-WEST IS GOING THROUGH A RAPID DEVELOPMENT. AS A RESULT OF THIS, THREE SCENARIOS WILL BE DEVELOPED: THE PROJECT ITSELF, THE PROJECT IN A SITUATION OF CRISIS, AND THE DEVELOPMENT POTENTIAL OF THE PROJECT AND ITS ENVIRONMENT. THE WORKED OUT INTERVENTIONS SHOW OPPORTUNITIES OF USE-NEUTRAL STRUCTURES WHICH CAN REACT DIFFERENTLY ON THE CONDITION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND ITS CIRCUMSTANCES. THE TWO EXISTING, UNCULTIVATED AREAS ARE TO BE NEWLY DEFINED. ON ONE SIDE THERE WILL BE AN URBAN PLACE AND ON THE OTHER HAND THERE WILL BE A COMPRESSION OF VARIOUS URBAN SITUATIONS. THE LINK OF THE TWO OPEN SPACES IS ACHIEVED BY A PROTECTED AREA UNDER A ROOF WHICH FITS IN WELL WITH THE ENVIRONMENT. THIS AREA IS DIVIDED INTO THREE SECTIONS: THE SOUTHERN PART CONSTITUTES THE PLACE FACADE AND, ALONG WITH THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS INCLUDING CLINIC AND FIRE STATION, DEFINES THE TOWN SQUARE. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE OPEN SPACES IS DEFINED AS THE HALL WHICH IS CONSIDERED A PUBLIC AREA. IT FORMS A SPATIAL LAYER WHICH REPLACES THE STREET FACADE. VARIOUS BUSINESSES AND SERVICES ARE PRESENT IN THE HALL SUCH AS THE BAKERY, THE MARKET, AN INTERNET CAFE, A TEAROOM AND A HAMMAM AS WELL. THE NORTHERN PART OF THE INTERVENTION CONSTITUTES THE ROOF UNDER WHICH VARIOUS PUBLIC ACTIVITIES CAN TAKE PLACE. THE SCHOOL, AS A PLACE OF EDUCATION, WILL BE AN EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT LOCATION FOR THE POPULATION AND CAN ALSO SERVE AS A TEMPORARY SHELTER. IN THE EVENT OF A CRISIS, THE CISTERN AND LIGHTING OF THE SPORTS FIELD INDEPENDENTLY SERVE AS A SUPPLY SOURCE. THE CAR PARK WITH ITS – FOR THE LOCATION – TYPICAL GROUND FLOOR USE CAN ALSO BE UTILIZED AS A SHELTER ON A SHORT TO MIDTERM BASIS. THE HALL FUNCTIONS AS AN INFORMATION POINT, SUPPLY POINT AND ASSEMBLY POINT. THE OPPORTUNITIES WHICH ARE OFFERED BY THE INFRASTRUCTURE IN COMBINATION WITH ITS SURROUNDING OPEN SPACES TRULY SHOW THE REAL POTENTIAL OF THIS STRATEGY. THE PROJECT WORKS AS A PROTOTYPE AND CAN, IN AN ADJUSTED FORM, BE ADAPTED TO OTHER DIVERSE LOCATIONS IN THE NETWORK.

ROME HAS BEEN A LIFETIME HISTORICAL TOWN. THE URBAN FABRIC IS INTERWOVEN WITH HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE. IMMIGRATION LET THE CITY GROW UNCONTROLLABLY. ILLEGAL DEVELOPMENTS ALONG THE RIVER TIBER AND THE SOUTHERN DEVELOPMENT AREAS POSE NEW PROBLEMS. THE AREA BETWEEN THE E.U.R. AND OSTIENSE (AN INDUSTRIAL ZONE WAS LOCATED THERE BACK IN THE 1970S) IS NOWADAYS A LARGELY UNEXPLOITED AND UNCONTROLLED WATERFRONT. THE INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT IN THIS AREA HAS BEEN LARGELY NEGLECTED. THE MASSTERPLAN PROVIDES A DEVELOPMENT ANALOGOUS TO THE IDEAL ROMAN CITY FOUNDINGS. THE SETTING OF AXES, THE CORRECTION OF EXISTING TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE, THE INITIATION AND EXPANSION OF THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM AND THE THE CHANNELING OF THE RIVER TIBER ARE THE FIRST STEPS IN THE MASTER PLAN. THE NEXT STEP IS TO DEVIDE THE TERRAIN IN VARIOUS FIELD PLOTS. THE ALLOCATION OF THE PUBLIC AREAS AND THE DETERMINATION OF THE MAXIMUM DENSENESS ARE FINALLY DETERMINED BY THE MASSTERPLAN. A WHOLE CROSS SECTION OF THE PROJECT IN ITS DETAILED SCALE HAS BEEN VIEWED. THE SIGNIFICANT POINTS THAT ARE IN SUPPORT OF THE MASTER PLAN SHOULD HELP TO COMPREHEND ROM’S HISTORY AND WAYS OF DEALING WITH IT. THE IDEA OF LAYERING AND OVERLAPPING DIFFERENT URBAN DESIGN PLANS WILL BE INCLUDED IN THIS MASTER PLAN AS WELL AS - ON A VISIONARY LEVEL – EXECUTING A POSSIBLE COMPRESSION WITHIN EXISTING PARAMETERS WITHOUT SUPPORTING THE URBAN SPRAWL OF THE CITY.

FREE FROM ARCHITECTONIC CONTSTRAINTS, WE WERE LOOKING AT COMPUTER GENERATE FORMS. THE MATERIAL IS REDUCED JUST ON GEOMETRY AND LIGHT. NOT THE ONLY OBJECT IS IN FOREGROUND, WE PRODUCED FAMILYS OF FORMS, AND TRIED TO EXPLORE THEIR ASTHETIC POTENTIAL. WE DESIGNED NOT AT THE RESULT OF THE FORM, BUT AT THE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT. COMPLEXITY WAS NOT A BARRIER ANYMORE, BUT RATHER A DESIRABLE QUALITY. DIVERSITY AND RICHNESS OF DETAIL DEVELOP, WHICH WERE NOT POSSIBLE TO DRAW OR BUILD IN A MODEL. OUR CONCEPT WAS TO CREATE OUT OF THESE ALGORYTHMS A NEW COLUMN ORDER, FIRST VIRTUAL AND IN A SECOND STEP AS A 1:1 MODEL. THE VIRTUAL STEP WAS IN THE PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE PROCESSING. THE 1:1 MODEL IN REAL 3.16 M HIGH IS OUT OF 1415 SLICES OF CARDBOARD, CUT IN APPROXIMATELY 50H BY TWO LASER CUTTING MACHINES.

THE KOLLER MEADOW IS A COUNTRY PARK ON A TOPOGRAPHIC EDGE OF THE SLOPE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY OF ZURICH. TWO SMALL HOUSES FROM THE 14TH C ARE LOCATED AT A HISTORIC ROAD LEADING TO THIS POINT. THE COLLECTION OF THE KOLLER FAMILY IS STORED IN THESE HOUSES. A MUSEUM FOR CONTEMPORARY ART AND THE COLLECTION OF THE DUTCH ARTIST THEO JANSEN ARE TO BE ACCOMMODATED IN A NEW MUSEUM. THE SETTING OF THE BUILDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK AT THE SIGNIFICANT EDGE OF THE SLOPE CREATES A TRANSITION BETWEEN THE STEEP SECTION OF THE PARK AND THE SUMMER MEADOW WHICH IS FREQUENTLY VISITED BY RESIDENTS. THE ARCADE SERVES AS A TRANSITION BETWEEN THE PARK AND MUSEUM. THE MUSEUM IS ENTERED THROUGH THE ENTRY HALL. DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF EXHIBITION AND INTERESTS - INDIVIDUAL PARTS OF THE MUSEUM COULD BE CONSIDERED TO BE JOINED OR SEPARATED. SMALL STRUCTURAL SHORTCUTS ALWAYS ALLOW INSIGHTS INTO OTHER PARTS OF THE MUSEUM. THE STRUCTURED IMPLEMENTATION OF THE SPACE PLAN ALLOWS FOR FLEXIBLE ROOM LAY OUT OF THE INTER CONNECTED MUSEUMS. SKYLIGHTS PROVIDE NATURAL DAYLIGHT TO THE ROOMS. THE ROOF TERRACE OF THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED AS A PLACE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK AND OFFERS A NICE VIEW OVER THE CITY AND THE PARK. THE ENVIRONMENT HOLDS TOGETHER THE FLAT PART OF THE PARK AND THE STEEP EDGE OF THE SLOPE AND CREATES A PARK AND ITS MUSEUM AS A NEW REFERENCE POINT IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

VIEWED FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE PRESENCE, WE SEE BOTH THE PAST AND THE FUTURE. IT IS THIS CONSTANT REPETITION, WHICH ALLOWS US TO PREDICT THE FUTURE. AT THE SAME TIME WE ARE ALSO AGREEING THAT WE ARE CONSTANTLY CAUGHT UP IN THE PRESENCE BUT ALWAYS BEHIND THE FUTURE WITHOUT ANY CHANCE OF KETCHING UP. THE HELPLESSNESS AGAINST THE LAWS TO PICTURE TIME IN THE SPACIAL DIMENSION WILL BECOME THE CENTRAL OBJECT AND SHOULD LEAD TO A CRITICAL DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE TOPIC FUTURE (SOMEHOW IT ALREADY EXISTS IN OUR IMAGINATION), WHICH STILL HAS THE STATUS OF INACCESSIBILITY.

THE "CITYGEN" ORGANIZING PRINCIPLE IS TO ARRANGE (WITHIN A CERTAIN PERIMETER) SELECTABLE USES SUCH AS RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL, MAJOR BUILDINGS AND FREE SPACE RELATIVE TO ITS NEIGHBORHOOD IN THE MOST OPTIMAL WAY POSSIBLE. IN THE URBAN AREA THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED ON A LARGE PLOT. THE NEIGHBORHOOD WILL BE ASSESSED BY A DEFINED AND ADJUSTABLE VALUE TABLE AND CONTINOUSLY IMPROVED. THE AIM OF THE RESPECTIVE FIELDS (DEPENDING ON THE DEFINITION OF THE VALUE TABLE) WILL IMPACT EACH GIVEN PLOT DIFFERENTLY. THE SPACE THAT’S TAKEN UP BY THE RIVER SPREE LIES BETWEEN KREUZBERG AND FRIEDRICHHAIN AND IS THE CENTER POINT OF THE PROJECT. THE DRAFT FOR A COMPACTION OF THE URBAN ISLANDS OF KREUZBERG AND FRIEDRICHSHAIN HAS BEEN BASED ON O.M. UNGERS VIEW POINTS OF URBAN PLANNING. THE VISION KREUZHAIN FORESEES A RADICAL COMPRESSION BY INJECTING DIFFERENT CITY BLOCKS. WITH THE RESTRUCTURING OF VARIOUS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS A MORE EFFICIENT TRANSPORT PLANNING WILL BE ACHIEVED. A MIXED USE STRUCTURE AS IT IS ALREADY EXISTING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD DISTRICT WILL CONTINUE TO BE PART OF THE MUNICIPAL DEVELOPMENT. THE PROBLEMS OF THE SEPARATION OF UTILIZATION IS PARTICULARLY OBVIOUS IN THE SATELLITE TOWNS IN BERLIN. PRODUCTION SHOULD COME BACK TO THE CITY. WITH THE INITIATION OF THE CONNECTION BETWEEN KREUZBERG AND FRIEDRICHSHAIN THE LONG OVERDUE EAST WEST CONNECTION BECAME REALITY. THE THREE STATIONS PARK - CENTER - PLACE WERE CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO THE EXISTING METRO NETWORK. PARALLEL ON STREET LEVEL, PARKING LOTS ARE PLACED IN ORDER TO SLOW DOWN TRAFFIC. THE REDUCTION OF THE HIGH-RISE PERIMETER TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THEIR ORIENTATION WITH RESPECT TO THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS. SUPERIOR SIGHTLINES WERE ACHIEVED BY KINKING INDIVIDUAL FRONTS. THE HIGHT COMPACTION HAS A LESSER IMPACT COMPARED TO A SETTING OF PARALLEL BUILDINGS.

THE CONSTRUCTION SITE IS LOCATED IN THE QUARTER „BERLIN MITTE“, VERY CLOSE TO THE ALEXANDERPLATZ AND NEXT TO A DEPARTMENT STORE AND A TRAFFIC JUNCTION. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MASTER PLAN WAS DONE IN CONNECTION WITH THE PREPARATION OF A HOTEL PROJECT. THE STRATEGIC REALIGNMENT OF THE TRAFFIC IN THE SURROUNDING AREA HAS LED TO A FURTHER CONSOLIDATION OF THE EXISTING SUBSTANCE TO A MEANINGFUL URBAN DESIGN SOLUTION. WITHIN THE DEFINED SPACE, A BEST POSSIBLE EXPLOITATION HAS TO BE ACHIEVED. THE RESULTING APPRECIATION OF THE MODERNIST POSTWAR BUILDINGS WHICH ARE FORMATIVE FOR THE SETTING BRINGS ADDITIONAL POTENTIAL FOR AN IMPROVED URBAN MICROSTRUCTURE. THE SKYSCRAPER WILL BECOME THE LANDMARK IN THE AREA. THE HOTEL AS A „HALF PUBLIC“ BUILDING WILL BE COMPLEMENTED WITH A VARIETY OF PUBLIC USES AND WELL INTEGRATED. THE PUBLIC UTILIZATION IS SPREAD OVER FIVE HALLS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDING. A DIRECT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE HALLS ALLOWS FOR FREE AND INDEPENDANT CIRCULATION. THE STORIES INBETWEEN ARE BELONGING TO THE HOTEL. THE BUILDING WITH ITS OVERLAP OF VARIOUS USES MIGHT SEEM LIKE A VERTICALLY-FUNCTIONING CITY. THE FACADE IS DOMINATED BY THE STRONG STRUCTURING OF THE HOTEL ROOMS. A SUPERORDINATE VERTICAL FACADE ELEMENT BINDS TOGETHER THE DIFFERENT USES AND MAKES THE BUILDING APPEAR AS A SINGLE SKYSCRAPER.

THE COURTYARD HOUSE IS A BUILDING WHERE ALL THE APARTMENTS ARE FACING THE CENTRAL COURTYARD. WITH ITS DISTICTIVE SHAPE IT ABSORBS ALL THE GREEN SURROUNDINGS TRYING TO ACHIEVE A MAXIMUM DISTANCE TO ITS NEIGHBORS. EXTROVERT, THE BUILDING STANDS IN THE LANDSCAPED COURTYARD. THE PATH WHICH IS SLIGHTLY BURIED UNDERGROUND LEADS THE INHABITANTS FROM ONE OF THE THREE ENTRANCES DIRECTLY TO THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING. ONE CAN ENTER THE BUILDING THROUGH A TWO STORY HALLWAY. THE ACCESSIBILITY OF THE FLATS IS ACHIEVED VIA A CENTRAL MAIN ROOM WHICH CONNECTS EACH FLOOR VIA A CASCADE STAIRCASE. ADEQUATE LIGHTING IS ACHIEVED THROUGH THE WEB LIKE DESIGN OF THE DIFFERENT MEZZANINE LEVELS. ALL APARTMENTS ARE ENTERED THROUGH A SMALL ENTRANCE HALL. FROM THERE (AND DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF APARTMENT) THE TENANTS HAVE ACCES TO VARIOUS ROOMS. THIS LAYOUT WILL ENABLE TENANTS TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE KITCHEN OR PRIVAT ROOMS. GUESTS HAVE DIRECT ACCESS TO THE LIVING ROOM. EACH APARTMENT HAS GOT A LARGE OUTDOOR SPACE. THE FACADE WITH ITS SLIDING ELEMENTS CAN GENERATE VARIOUS TRANSLUCENT EFFECTS.

THE BUILDING IS THE RESULT OF THE NEW URBAN HOUSING INTERVENTION – THE HIGHWAY THAT DIVIDES THE TOWNSHIP SCHWAMENDING IN TWO PARTS, NEEDS TO BE TRANSFERRED INTO A LIVABLE COMPONENT OF THAT PART IN THE TOWNSHIP. IT IS INTENDED THAT THE EXISTING UNDERPASS UNDERNEATH THE HIGHWAY, THE „HIGHWAY INTEGRATION“ (HIGHWAY HOUSING) AND THE PEDESTRIAN SIDEWALK SHOULD BECOME A CENTRAL JUNCTION. THE AXIS SAATLENSTRASSE, WHICH RUNS FROM THE SCHWAMENDINGERPLATZ THROUGH THE SAATLENQUARTER INTO THE NEW URBAN DEVELOPMENT AREA LEUTSCHENBACH ZURICH, WILL BENEFIT FROM THIS PROJECT. THE BUILDING CREATES A NEW CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO QUARTERS. BY NO MEANS IT SHOULD REPRESENT A BARRIER BETWEEN THE „HIGHWAY HOUSING“ AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD BOUNDARY! THE ROAD BETWEEN THE BUILDING ENABLES A CLEAR VIEW OF THE DEPTH AND OPENS UP NEW PROSPECTS OF A BUILDING. THE PRINCIPLE OF THE SUSPENSION IN THE FORM OF ADDITIVE SEQUENCE TAKES PLACE IN THIS DRAFT. AT FIRST, THE SPACIAL ARRANGEMENT OF COMPONENTS IS NOT NECESSARILY OF HIGH PRIORITY BUT RATHER A HIGHLY FLEXIBLE FRAMEWORK WHICH ALLOWS FOR VARIOUS SCENARIOS. THE VISITOR CAN ACCESS THE BUILDING IN DIFFERENT WAYS. THE BUILDING CAN BE ENTERED THROUGH A DIRECT ACCESS WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE SUPPORT STRUCTURE. THE PROJECT IS INTENDED TO BECOME A SYMBOL OF THE CITY. THE GIVEN SPACE PROGRAM HELPED TO CREATE A CITY-LIKE SITUATION AND ARRANGEMENT. THE GREAT HALL ACTS AS A PUBLIC SPACE. THE MAIN TYPES OF USES WERE HOUSED IN SO-CALLED BOXES AND ARE ACCESSIBLE VIA INTERNAL ROADS. THE MULTIPLE USE OF INDIVIDUAL BOXES SUPPORTS THE IDEA OF URBAN DESIGN WITHIN THE BUILDING.

THIS IS A PLACE WITHOUT ANY CHARACTER BUT STILL SEEMS TO SURVIVE SOMEHOW. THE BUILDINGS SPEAK THEIR OWN LANGUAGE AND IF THERE WOULD BE NO LANGUAGE, NOBODY WOULD REALLY CARE. A PLACE WITHOUT IDENTITY AND NO LIFE. A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE ARE HIDING BEHIND THEIR HEDGES AND GARDEN WALLS – LIKE A LIFE LIVED BY MANY RESIDENTS IN BIG CITIES. PEOPLE ARE STILL MIGRATING TO THIS PLACE – THERE SEEMS TO BE A DEMAND FOR A LIFESTYLE IN ANONYMITY. THE DESIGN DRAFT PICKS UP THE CONCEPT OF ANONYMITY AND TRANSFORMES IT INTO AN APARTMENT BUILDING WHICH FITS INTO THE APPEARANCE OF ITS SURROUNDINGS REVEALING ONLY SMALL DETAILS. THERE ARE DIFFERENT STORIES BEHIND THE FACADE – PLAYED LIKE ON A STAGE BY DIFFERENT PARTIES. A SIMPLE SUPPORT PLATE DESIGN ALLOWS THE BUILDING TO LEAVE ENOUGH ROOM FOR NEW INTERPRETATIONS AND RESTRUCTURING. THE PROPOSED VERSION APPLIES THE ROOM ADDITIVE DESIGN PROCESS WITH A RIGID CASING. EACH ROOM CAN BE DEDICATED TO ONE OR MORE APPROPRIATE USES. SPECIAL ATTENTION WAS GIVEN TO THE MATERIALS USED, THE SIZE, FUNCTION AND VIEW OF EACH ROOM AS WELL.

THE HISTORIC RIVERSIDE QUARTER OF RIBEIRA STRETCHES FROM THE BANKS OF THE RIVER DOURO UP TO THE CATHEDRAL SE. IT IS CHARACTERISED BY ITS NARROW, WINDING STREETS, IT'S STEEP STAIRS AND DENSE SETTLEMENT STRUCTURES. DUE TO HEAVY CITY TRAFFIC AND TOO LITTLE PARKING SPACE, THIS PART OF OPORTO IS NOT A PARTICULARLY ATTRACTIVE RESIDENTIAL AND BUSINESS AREA. THE PRESENT PROJECT IS THEREFORE AIMING TO IMPROVE RIBEIRAS INFRASTRUCTURES AND THEIR USE. BY CREATING NEW APPEALING AREAS ALONG THE RIVERSIDE, YOUNG FAMILIES AND STUDENTS ARE ATTRACTED. THE ADDITIONAL AND HIGHQUALITY SPACE WILL UPGRADE THE STANDARD OF LIVING IN THE HISTORIC QUARTER. FURTHERMORE, THE NEW AREAS WILL POSITIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO RIBEIRAS CULTURAL DIVERSITY. EXTRA OPPORTUNITIES FOR TOURIST ACTIVITIES ARE CREATED WITHOUT ALTERING THE HISTORIC STRUCTURES OF THE QUARTER. THIS AGAIN WILL BE IN THE INTEREST OF PORTO'S GROWING TOURISM.

Close to the university, a campus for students will be built. It will contain different types of flats offering opportunities for individual use. The floating platform which leads to the island will create additional space.
Certain parts of the existing congress building and former custom office are to be retained. By opening it up to the land as well as the water and thanks to subterranean parking space, the present function of the building is strengthened. It might even assume international importance. Adjoining the congress building, hotel and seminar rooms extend the existing centre. Furthermore, apartments will be built for young families which benefit from the nearby schools and parks. The existing market hall will find a new home underneath the Structure 02.
ISLAND_01 Where the river Douro meets the sea, Island 01 – together with Structure 01 – shapes the new identity of urban Porto. Offering a vast array of leisure activities and a vibrant night life, this Island will attract urban young people. Its condensed outer shell resembles Ribeira’s structures and melts into its surroundings.

STRUCTURE_00 The historic Ribeira quarter lacks contemporary apartments and parking space. The existing living structures are to be replaced by new ones. In order not to alter the cityscape, the outer walls of the buildings will remain the same. Only the inside will be renewed. The modernised inner structures are again characterised by different ground plans, typologies and courtyards and are therefore ideal for individual use. The ground floor will be used for commercial purposes, sufficient parking space will be provided in the basement.
STRUCTURE_00 Situated between two prominent bridges, Structure 03 is meant to considerably reduce the housing shortage in the old town. The difficult topographic location needs a multilayered arrangement. Structure 03 is therefore built in the style of the old town’s medieval buildings. The layered areaways and courtyards create an ideal daylight situation and offer interesting views on the river Douro. Public transport will be lead through the structure which increases the mobility of this area. As a result, various services and businesses will settle down. Structure 03 can be adapted at any time in order to meet changing demand.
ISLAND_02 Island 02, by virtue of its prominent location, serves as navigation aid for visitors of the old town. A multilayered park, it compensates for the missing green space in Ribeira and again offers opportunities for various uses at one and the same place. The different layers can be accessed by means of gradually ascending ramps winding themselves around the island. Shuttle boats transport visitors to and from the green island.

ISLAND_02 The last of the three islands will be built at the narrowest point of the Douro river – its shape again resembling the structures of the old town. With its cinemas, theatres as well as cafés and restaurants, it will offer a wide range of recreational opportunities. The top layers are reserved for generous parks giving a magnificent view over the whole city.
