Love in Bloom

your spring inspiration

We’re feeling a distinct spring in our step, and have been cooing and swooning over sneak peaks of 2016’s spring weddings so far. There’s something so special about spring weddings, don’t you think? The promise of new beginnings, the incredible array of blooms, and the rare just-right temperature for a 100 layer sleeveless wedding dress! Of course spring weddings don’t have the guaranteed sunshine of a balmy summer’s day, or the sparkle and chance of snow of a winter wedding, but what spring weddings lack in extremity, they make up for in opportunity. At no other time of the year are peonies, magnolia, cherry blossom, sweetpea and freesia all in bloom. It’s the perfect season to rock a light bridal jacket or a gorgeous chiffon sleeve. The palettes are endless, from buttery yellows, to dusky blues, soft whites to moody purples. And from Easter egg hunts for the wee ones to bright ginghams, bonnets and flower crowns, ’tis the season to indulge in a little springtime whimsy. Still not convinced that a spring wedding is for you? Take a look at these inspired ideas for a budding big day…

Tall Tiers

Wedding cakes are on the rise in tiers, that is. We’re talking five and six layers, plus the return of columns to give the confections even more height. These sugar masterpieces are as elegant as ever with bold sugar flowers, detailed patterns and pretty piping. A wedding cake is like the exclamation point to your day, so why not go big and tall? Pastel Palettes Spring is all about pastels soft yellow, blush pink and light lavender. Layer with shiny metallics like copper and rose gold for a luxe look, or pair with neutrals like gray and taupe.

Passed Eats

From artisan spirits to interactive food stations, spring receptions are all about the eats and specialty sips. If you’re opposed to a sit-down dinner, consider this new twist on food stations: Your caterer can create a menu that moves from light cocktail bites to heavier hors d’oeuvres and finishes with something sweet. Your guests will be free to chat and move about the party.

WIND UPON WATER Our 2016 runway collection was shot in the dry desert where water is most needed. This collection is an ode to water, the way it flows and interwines with wind and sand to create new spirit and energy. Inspired by how wind moves water, creating breathtaking reflections of light, and how waves break and fluff as they hit the sand. I’ve combind waterlike crystals, coral lace, wavy ruffles and water-like pearls to mimic the magic of wind upon water. From flowing chiffons, to dripping water-like details and coral-inspired lace, each gown’s details echo the elemental rhythm of the world. Beginning again, in a new decade, with this collection represents my resolve to re-energize and empower my environment.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

WEDDING STYLE

No one ever gets tired of the Alice in Wonderland theme, especially when it comes to weddings. We love this fun tea party/mad hatter theme idea. An Alice In Wonderland wedding says a lot about a couple. This wedding theme is perfect for brides and grooms who are fun loving, playful, unique and non-traditional.

Photography: Star Noir Studio

Wedding Dress For an Alice in Wonderland inspired wedding dress, try a lace dress and add a blue sash for that hint of Alice to your theme!

Wedding Cake The cake should feature a mix of pearls, vintage brooches and even a miniature looking glass with a tiny teacup, and a hand-crafted “love” cake topper. Use cream with hints of blue and vintage brooches.

14 Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2016 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

HOW CAN I INCORPORATE WONDERLAND INTO MY DAY?

Food Plan a dessert table with mini key lime pies, brownies and red velvet cookies, and honey pot favors in pink and gold with Alice themed vintage tags.

Tablscapes Start with eggplant purple linen featuring three dimensional rosettes or gold will work, paired with a giant teapot overflowing with flowers and greenery. A mix of floral arrangements and brightly frosted cupcakes in gold-rimmed tea cups add the perfect details. Utilize vintage clocks in silver and don’t forget the silver chivari chairs. White candle holders and floral teacup centerpieces are a must have. Keep your colors in lavenders, silver and of course light blue hues.

Grooms Attire Make sure your groom has a pocket watch so he’s not late for that very important date! Your man can be wearing simple khakis with a vest, tie and patterned shirt.

My Prescription for Your Glasses

Wine glasses that is! Casual Luxury principles denote that the smallest things matter a lot. Anyone who knows me has heard me say, “The devil is in the details.” It is with that in mind, I offer a simple primer on how the size and shape of glassware affects the taste of your beverage—and thanks to the folks at Cardinal Glass for the beautiful glassware and glassware etiquette advice.

Red Wine: Red wine glasses should be deep and either slightly elongated or balloon shaped. This helps the wine aerate and focus the aromas upward. In effect, the shape concentrates the flavors and aromas to maximize their potential. Red wines are commonly served at room temperature or slightly cooler. Serving red wine too warm can overwhelm the senses and will not bring out the best in your bottle. White Wine: The bowl of a wine glass is more elongated than the red wine glass. The narrow shaped bowl helps balance white wine’s fruit forward nature. It also helps intensify the crisp finish. Some white wine glasses are flared at the rim. The flaring design is perfect for especially young white wines, as it helps further intensify the finish. White wine should be served chilled, but not icy. Sparkling Wine: Sparkling wine is any wine infused with bubbles. There are many kinds of sparkling wine. Champagne is from the Champagne region of France. Prosecco is an Italian sparkler. Cava is from Spain. There are also great California sparkling wines that use the Champagne method to create their bubbly. Glasses for this wine are long and slender. The shape preserves the fine bubbles and focuses the delicate aroma. Sparkling wines are served chilled to very cold. Specialty: There are many other shapes of glasses that you can find. Each one has its own unique form designed to improve the experience and enjoyment of the beverage. Margarita glasses have a shallow bowl to maintain the frozen concoction for as long as possible. Pilsner glasses are shaped long and narrow and are typically footed. Martini glasses have a triangular shape that is unmistakable. There are also short-stemmed, bottom-heavy, bowl-shaped glasses for Brandy, Cognac and spirits. These glasses are designed so they can rest in the hand, which allows your body heat to warm the beverage to the perfect temperature. Thus releasing the bouquet and flavor of the spirit or wine. Stemmed glasses for iced beverages are sturdier versions of the wine glass and feature a larger bowl to accommodate ice cubes. These glasses can also be used for mixed drinks that feature large bits of fruit, like Mai Tais, or sangria. Aperitif, digestifs or cordial glasses are often small and delicate. These glasses are for before or after dinner, and at the end of the evening as a nightcap. They are small because only an ounce or two of highly flavored liquor is sipped. You can also use these glasses to serve ice wine. In my opinion, whichever drink you like is the best drink. Be sure to pick up different shaped glasses that put your favorites in the best light possible. I find tag sales are a great place to get a mix of glasses, and it’s always nice to reduce, reuse and recycle by giving them a new home in your bar.

Red, WhiteWho & Knew... Blue

by lifstyle editor Mar Jennings

“We, the people…” doesn’t have to mean that “You, the hostess…” have to go un-thanked! Just some savvy twists on the traditional approaches will make your 4th of July gathering remembered by everyone. July 4th should mean more than just the casual picnics and the red, white and blue colors that we often see. Today, many people take for granted the fact that the life they lead is a direct result of the sacrifice and hardship of others — in the past and even in the present. That said, this 4th of July should be one that we embrace not only the Independent spirit, but a true understanding of what it really means to be free. The simple task of hanging a flag and decorations has become, I think, too routine. DRESS UP YOUR NAPKINS: Paper napkins are, I’m sorry, unpatriotic! Red, white and blue ribbons are available at any fabric store. Simply taking a plain cotton napkin and tying it with one, two or three of these colored ribbons is an easy way to make the table more festive and totally recyclable, too. RED, WHITE AND BLUE FLORAL CENTERPIECE: You will need: carnations, florists’ oasis, and a decorative but shallow blue bowl. Carnations are back — and although inexpensive I use them to great effect! You’ll need approximately 18 red and 18 white ones for this project. They’re such an appropriate flower for this holiday because they are hardy, plentiful, and long-lasting — great American traits, too, I think! Start with a round piece of florist’s oasis. Standard ball-shaped oasis are 6 inches across; I like the 12 inch ones; if you can’t find one that large, you may need to create one by taping together several bricks and then trimming to shape. No matter what shape you start with, make sure you create a level bottom section so the ball doesn’t roll. Saturate the oasis with water. Trim each carnation about 2 inches from the bloom, and insert them into the oasis. Create a striped pattern to mimic the stripes on the flag. I like to go top-to-bottom, like a beach-ball, versus around the horizon, but it’s up to you. Place the completed oasis in the shallow bowl. I like to add some more water at this point to make sure the oasis is saturated. You can use food coloring to turn some of your white carnations blue! Simply place blue food coloring in water, then allow the carnation stems — not the blooms! — to rest in this blue water overnight. This way you can use all 3 colors to create your centerpiece. If you try this, you’ll find that a white bowl looks best to house your finished project. PATRIOTIC TEA LIGHTS: The Boston Tea Party was an important act of insurrection, but it doesn’t mean that tea lights aren’t welcome on your 4th of July table! This easy twist on table lighting will make your guests envious that they didn’t think of it, while adding a touch of whimsy. Forget about traditional votive candle holders—try martini glasses for this, they give you more height off the table. Find the red, white and blue candy sprinkles (yes, the ones for ice cream or cakes) and fill each glass halfway. Nestle the tea light in the sprinkles and you’re done. Don’t be afraid of the “fake” tea lights that operate off a battery. They flicker realistically, and many can be turned off, allowing them to be used up to 36 hours. TAKE HOME HISTORY: Print copies of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution; quick Google searches resulted in numerous legitimate sites for me, so you’ll have no trouble finding them. Roll them, tie with your remaining red, white and blue ribbon, and alternate them at your place settings. If your guests are feeling particularly patriotic that evening, you can suggest that someone read sections of these amazing documents out loud.

Ideas for Your Wedding Day Exit What is your exit strategy?

Historically thought to bring the newlyweds a bountiful and fruitful marriage, showering the couple with rice as they make their wedding grand exit is a ritual that has been practiced for generations. In recent times however, couples have embraced alternatives to this festive tradition that are more environmentally friendly or that give their wedding a little extra personality. Give your guests something to remember you by with these seasonally inspired send off ideas!

Spring Send Offs: Celebrate your spring fever with the fragrant blossoms of cherry trees. Thought to bring good luck, cherry blossoms are the quintessential representation of springtime. These real cherry blossoms can be found on Etsy.com, and possibly through your florist as well.

Summer Send Offs: Certainly the most popular season for weddings, summertime offers lots of ideas for send offs, from bubbles, to sparklers, to birdseed. For couples looking to step out of the box, consider tossing dried lavender buds. The most ecofriendly of choices, lavender is a wonderful substitute for birdseed or rice that will still provide you with the classic send off photo op. Bonus: it will smell divine! You can find dried lavender buds at Save-on-Crafts.com.

Fall Send Offs: Looking for a send off fit for a crisp autumn day? Natural gold boda tree leaves from Thailand will provide a delicate autumnal elegance as they float to the ground around you. An alternative to flower petals, and just as beautiful. Check out Save-on-Crafts.com for even more colors.

Winter Send Offs: Similar to ribbon wands, these streamers make a glorious end to a night filled with dancing and laughter. If your crowd loves to party, this is the exit strategy for you. These streamers are available on Etsy.com in ten different colors that you can mix and match to your hearts content.

Something Blue

Creative Ways to Wear Something Blue You’ve probably heard of the wedding day tradition where a bride is supposed to wear something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. This tradition goes back to an old English rhyme about the four objects that will bring good luck to a bride on her wedding day. Something old represents continuity; something new brings optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolizes happiness; and something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity. A hidden blue heart: This is one of the sweetest takes on ‘something blue’ that I’ve seen. Take an old dress shirt of your father’s (or another loved one that you’d like to honor) and cut out a heart to sew inside your dress.

Blue garter: Whether or not you’ll be upholding the garter toss tradition, wearing a blue garter is still an easy and concealed way to sport your ‘something blue.’

Blue pedicure: Whether you’re wearing closed toed shoes or open, a blue pedicure is a sweet and subtle way to wear your ‘something blue.’ Try Essie’s ‘Borrowed & Blue’ from their wedding collection or ‘Blu’ by Zoya for that perfect pale blue hue.

Blue in your bouquet: Your bouquet is a great place to tie in a little something blue. Either wrap the stems with blue ribbon or tuck one small blue flower into your arrangement.

!

quick tip

blue Add a single ur flower to yo bouquet!

Blue hanky: Chances are you’ll be shedding at least a few happy tears on your wedding day. So why not dry your eyes with a blue handkerchief? You can even find a pretty vintage one from the flea market or Etsy, and check ‘something old’ off of your list at the same time.

Blue jewelry: A statement necklace with a bit of blue in it is a great way to add a pop of color to your white dress. Or, simply don a dainty sapphire pendant or a sweet sapphire ring on your right hand.

Summer is here! And nothing is more useful for a summer occasion than refreshments, especially if they are cute and fun. Whether you are hosting a bridal shower, a garden wedding or a day-after brunch, drink stations are a lovely way to really get creative and interactive with your decor. Serve your welcome drinks from a dedicated drink station, have a number of drink choices for guests to choose from and decorate the drink station to tie in with your wedding style. We love this idea, especially for summer weddings when they could be set up outside.

Keep it Colorful: Depending on the beverages you choose to serve, you may want to add some garnish for your drinks. Fruits and veggies not only are refreshing and look pretty on the glasses, but they also add color and texture to the station. How to Make It: Pour all ingredients over ice in a shaker or large glass and shake vigorously. Rim a glass with sugar and serve on the rocks. Garnish with an orange slice.

Peach Fizz

Mango

What You Need: 1 ripe mango, 1 large ripe peach, ½ c. unsweetened mango, peach, or orange juice, 1 tbsp. sugar, Peach schnapps or peach-flavored seltzer, Cold club soda, seltzer, or champagne.

How to Make It: In a blender, puree mango, peach, fruit juice (mango, peach or orange), and sugar (adding more sugar if puree is too tart). Puree can be made up to 1 day ahead and refrigerated. For each fizz, fill tall glasses with ice cubes. Pour 2 tbsp each puree and peach schnapps or peach-flavored seltzer into each glass and top with cold club soda, seltzer, or champagne.

Pomegranate

What You Need:

Daiquiris

3½ c. pomegranate juice, 1½ c. plain or raspberry-flavored light rum, 1 c. cassis or cranberry liqueur, ⅓ c. fresh lime juice, ice cubes, Pomegranate seeds, frozen green grapes, or kiwi slices.

How to Make It: Combine pomegranate juice, rum, cassis, and lime juice in a large pitcher. Cover and refrigerate until cold, at least 4 hours or up to 1 week ahead. In a blender, combine 1 1/2 cups juice mixture and 1 cup ice cubes. Blend until slushy. Pour into large martini or wine glasses; garnish as desired. Repeat with remaining juice. Sure, there are those who believe any cocktail is refreshing and suitable for summer. And they have a point. But when you’re grilling, or feasting on clams, or kicking back on the sand, some combinations of ingredients do quench the thirst better than others. First, consider fruit. Drinks like the Margarita and the Daiquiri have spawned a million cocktails in this category. The Cosmo introduces cranberry to the equation. And if you can’t decide what fruit to use, try adding whatever you have lying around to drinks like the Sangria or Pimm’s Cup, powered by ginger ale (this drink sometimes even gets a slice of cooling cucumber).

Wedding Cocktails

The dress. The caterer. The invites. The seating. As any bride-to-be can tell you, a successful wedding is all in the details, organized to death, so that every moment of the wedding day goes off without a hitch. If you’re the average American couple who met at a bar, you’ll wistfully remember the watering hole as a big part of your single life. So, like a cozy old cashmere sweater, don’t forget about the bar just because you’re walking down the aisle! There are some key rules we always recommend couples follow when it comes to libations on their special day. First rule of thumb: A full bar doesn’t mean an exciting bar. It just means too many bottles and not enough strategy on how the bar and specialty cocktails can complement all the wedding details — and the guests’ overall experience. Our advice: iconic cocktails that touch upon the happiness, humor and stereotypes of the typical wedding. Cocktails that serve as conversation starters. Cocktails that take into account the duration of a wedding and how dignified (or not) you wish to remain during the big event. As a culture, we love to stereotype. Why appreciate human depth and complexity when you can put it in a box? Or in this case, a glass. Also important is keeping the cocktail options simple as, let’s be honest, regardless of how hard any couple tries to avoid it, weddings remain decidedly complicated affairs. Any chance at simplification is welcome. So although we may not have any marital advice to offer (at least not at this point), we do know a thing or two about great-tasting simple cocktails with a humorous twist, that will have your wedding party toasting to the bride and groom all evening long.

behind the bar Summer Bourbon Cherries While summer has not yet officially started, I’ve already been enjoying one of its sweetest rewards: cherries. These deliciously ripe fruits are tasty on their own, but they can also be incorporated into a range of refreshing cocktails. Among my favorite ways to use them is in the thirst-quenching Cherry Caipirinha (cachaça, cherries, lime and velvet falernum). And if you simply swap in light rum for the cachaça, you can make a Cherry Caipirissima. Cherries are also, of course, an essential garnish for classics like the Manhattan and the Rob Roy. During the cold months, our only option is jarred cherries like those from Luxardo or Sable & Rosenfeld. (The bright-red dyed cherries sold by the gallon have no place in a well-made drink.) But in this age of craft bartending and artisanal ingredients, you can also easily make your own cocktail cherries. I like the simple recipe for Bourbon Cherries from David Page and Barbara Shinn’s Recipes from Home. The hardest part is waiting for them to cure, but you’ll have a sweet taste of summer all winter long. INGREDIENTS: 1 cup Sugar, 1.5 cups Water, 3 pints Montmorency cherries, stemmed, 2 L Bourbon. PREPARATION: Place 2 tablespoons of sugar and 3 tablespoons of water into each of 8 sterilized 1-pint Mason jars. Fill the jars with the cherries, packing tightly, but being careful not to crush the fruit. Fill each jar with bourbon, leaving half an inch of headroom. Seal the jars and shake them to dissolve the sugar. Store in a dark place for 3 months before using. This recipe is adapted from Recipes from Home by David Page and Barbara Shinn.

Well Groomed

All You Need To Know About Grooms Cakes

They’re bright, they’re garish, and they can sometimes be a bit of an eyesore on your carefully crafted pastel wedding palette. But they are also fun, filled with chocolate, and one of the longest-running wedding traditions in the world. We’re talking grooms cakes. The tradition for a groom’s cake might be seen as one spawned in the Southern states, but it in fact, dates back to Victorian Britain, and is still observed by the British royal family today. There used to be a small bride’s cake too, to complete the trio. Nowadays, grooms’ cakes are seen as a nod to the main man at the wedding, in a day that’s otherwise all about the bride. While we’re sure you guys appreciate the gesture, many modern couples plan their day together, with both of their choices reflected in every aspect of the wedding. That said, who are we to turn down cake? Grooms’ cakes were traditionally a fruit or chocolate based bake, with a boozy element too (lots of our favorite things!) so for a modern take, a chocolate Guinness cake or brandy black forest would work beautifully. As the Southern tradition for grooms’ cakes has evolved, so too have the cakes themselves. Search for grooms’ cakes online, and you’ll find all manner of odd shapes and novelty bakes, from sugar paste Lego men to icing crafted into baked hams. There’s also quite a few dead ducks as hunting is a common theme, as are food and football. Now, while we love all things novel we’re also partial to the idea of something a little more classy, for stylish grooms who want their cake to be just as elegant as the rest of their day. Your groom’s cake can be an opportunity to feature a showstopping centerpiece to your dessert table, or to add a non-traditional cake into the mix. The groom’s cake is often served at the rehearsal dinner or a next day BBQ (there’s already a LOT of cake and dessert after your reception dinner) but can also be dished out to your guests during cocktail hour too. There is a rehearsal dinner tradition to box up slices of the groom’s cake and gift it to your single female guests to sleep with under their pillows. Legend has it, they’ll dream of their perfect man the night before the wedding. Though I’ve a feeling your single friends wouldn’t thank you for the gesture!

Keep the Party Going! Day after brunches have become common especially if you are having a destination wedding. Here are some tips that we have put together to help you be the hostess with the mostest.

h c n u r B r e ft A y a D

So the big night is over, and you’re officially married. If you’re not leaving for the honeymoon right away, a postwedding brunch is a great way to wind down the festivities. Newlyweds can enjoy a final opportunity to thank their guests and spend a little more time with loved ones. Here are some tips to get you started. Who’s Invited? The brunch is usually for the couples’ families and any wedding guests that are still in town, particularly those that traveled a great distance to get there who will especially appreciate being included. Feel free to also include attendants, friends, or even the family dog (depending on the location). Basically, anything goes. Of course, that depends on who’s paying for it, which leads us to... Should We Send Invites? Insert a card inside the wedding invitations of the guests you would like to attend the post-wedding fete. Or you can send out a separate mailing entirely -- it’s really up to you. The cards can be as formal or as casual as the brunch itself. If very casual, invite your guests via telephone or email. You can also tailor the invitation to a theme to fit with the menu. What Should We Serve? Popular brunch items include Belgian waffles, Eggs Benedict, pastries, fruit, mimosas (champagne with orange juice), hash browns and other breakfast-related foods. However, don’t feel obligated to serve the standard brunch fare. A menu featuring a favorite type of cuisine of the couple is also an option, as is a barbecue or other casual dining choice, as long as the brunch is not held the first thing in the morning.

The essentials! Signage

Alcohol

Chalkboards are seen a lot in today’s weddings. A Smart tip is to erase it and place your brunch menu on it instead.

If your venue will allow you to stock your own bar, find out if there’s any leftover champagne or vodka at the end of the evening and use it to mix mimosas and bloody Mary cocktails at the brunch.

Leftover Desserts

Bathroom Kits Freshen up the baskets bathroom kits for brunch with items like hangover remedies and fresh fruit drinks. It’s quick, easy and thoughtful.

The Who, What and

Wear!

If there is any cake or desserts left over from the night before, have the venue box them up and take them out the next day for brunch.

What to Wear to your Wedding Brunch

Having a day-after wedding brunch is popular and fun! Since you’ll still be the star of the show, you’ll want to make sure you look your best, yet feel relaxed and happy. Here are our favorite suggestions for the bride for her day-after wedding brunch. A Colorful Easy Dress Of course, there’s no rule saying you need to wear bridal white to your day-after wedding brunch. You can wear a dress similar to those you wore to your showers - a bright day-time dress that makes you feel beautiful. Look to classic brands like Diane Von Furstenberg and Carolina Herrera for that lady-like chic. Or try a Kate Spade dress that is effortless with a wrap waist that can adjust to the level of your wedding reception indulgence! Rest Those Dancing Feet with Flats Sky-high heels are beautiful for your wedding day, but they can be hard on your hoofers. The next morning, you’ll want to rest those barking dogs with these chic flats. A little bit of sparkle at the toe and heel make them fun, while the quilting keeps them soft. Choosing white means you can press them into service for the end of the reception, or the honeymoon as well. A Bag to Carry the Goods You’ll need a bag large enough to carry not only the standard goods like your wallet and makeup, but also items like your camera and mementos. Some guests might also bring you wedding gifts of cards with money, since they’ll know the day-after is safer than the wedding itself. Justify purchasing a new fun bag by choosing one large and versatile enough to carry on your honeymoon and afterward. This Tory Burch bag is chic while still being timeless.

BRING ON THE

Bridesmaids

WHAT BRIDESMAIDS SHOULD PACK FOR THE WEDDING DAY

BEAUTY TOOLS

PRE-WEDDING OUTFIT

It is going to be a beautiful but long day for you and your fellow Bridesmaids. Bring your makeup, hair spray, extra bobby pins, and other beauty tools for all the touch ups you may need. An emergency beauty kit usually has many miniature size products that are perfect to travel with.

Today is the day! Plan to wear an outfit that you can wash easily AND would be proud to be filmed/photographed in. I recommend wearing a button-down shirt and cute slacks/yoga pants.

WEDDING OUTFIT Necessary items for the ceremony: bridesmaid dress (on a hanger), shoes, undergarments, and any accessories you plan on wearing to the ceremony and reception. You got rid of all the wrinkles before packing for the weekend, right?

SNACKS & WATER Don’t let low blood sugar get you down! Plan to bring food for downtime. The day will fly by before you realize that it’s been seven hours since you last ate. Even if you prefer junk food, be sure to bring a few snacks that are nutritionally balanced. While you’re at it, pack a reusable water bottle.

EMERGENCY KIT This kit can be as big or as small as you’d like… but work with yourself and your bride in mind. Our recommendations include: Safety pins, Double-sided tape, Bobby pins, A stain removal pen, A Sharpie pen, Tissues, Oil absorbing sheets, Lint roller, A mini umbrella, Aspirin, Breath mints (NOT gum), Waterproof mascara, Concealer, Bonus points if you can get your hands on a mini-steamer for squashing last minute wrinkles!

CONTACT INFO FOR THE BRIDAL PARTY In your phone or on a piece of paper, this is imperative. The wedding party will not stay together all the time. Whether you need to grab the best man to facilitate gift exchanges or grab Grandma to ease last-minute wedding jitters, you’ll need to be in contact with the “team” regularly.

A COPY OF YOUR SPEECH This applies primarily to honor attendants but, it absolutely applies to anyone making a toast. Don’t forget those notes!

WEDDING GIFT/CARD Stash your gift for the newlyweds in a vehicle that will be at the reception site! (Better yet, stash it in a rocking tote bag more on that later.)

A ROCKIN TOTE BAG You’ll be changing outfits, packing, unpacking, and constantly on the move. Bring a carry-all bag that can fit your pre-ceremony outfit, your emergency kit, snack(s), a cell phone charger, and any miscellaneous items that you’re keeping for the bride and/or bridal party.

FROM ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY

When in doubt, stand out

Weddings dresses speak volumes about the bride, and this year, more than ever brides are looking to showcase their bold and one-of-a-kind personality. Blush pink and sea mist blue dresses are taking over the racks and pushing those traditional dresses aside. My new bridal dress collection, David Tutera for Mon Cheri, has endless options in an array of colors.

Food Pairings

Who doesn’t love a good cocktail hour?! This year, it’s all about food pairings. Serve mini taco bites with salted margaritas, mini pretzels with crafted beer, brownie bites with espresso shots, caprese salad bites with a sparkling rosé or sushi with sake. You can’t go wrong when ordering sushi rolls from Katsuya. Not only was the presentation gorgeous, but the cucumber avocado rolls were to die for!

Mix and Match

My planning team will not only coordinate your event from start to finish, but they take the most stressful tasks and make it appear as though it were the simplest. Seating arrangements would fall under that category. I always suggest to break up the corporate “round-table feel” and do a mix of round and long tables. This not only offers a variety of seating options, but is also more visually appealing.

Location, location, location

Your location will add more charisma to your event than you think. Pick somewhere that helps with your theme, a barn, the woods, between two streets, on a beach, an art gallery, aquarium, canyon, castle, library, etc. If you’re searching for old Hollywood glamour, look into having your event at The Library at The Redbury. Its easy-going elegance speaks for itself.

TUTERA’S TRENDS FOR 2016

Wedding planning season is here! We’re already gearing up here at Florida Bride Magazine to help you say “I Do” in style from the engagement through the reception. And for those of you planning that special day, we’ve got you covered on all the hottest trends of 2016 from celebrity planner and event expert, David Tutera. Check them out below and happy planning!

Moved by Music

One of the biggest items that can make or break your event is your entertainment. I always tell my clients that this is the part where your guests will decide if they are glad they RSVP’d “yes” to the invitation. For a recent wedding that my team and I did, we had a string quartet for the ceremony, an electric violinist for cocktails, and a DJ and band combo for reception. During dinner, we also had a Frank Sinatra tribute act to serenade the guests into the sweet “summer winds.” You want to ensure that your guests are transported through music with every stage of your event.

Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2016 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 53

FROM ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY What are the hottest trends in weddings that you have been seeing for 2016? Bridal fashion is definitely breaking the mold this year with soft flowing silhouettes, dimension, texture and a lot more skin. Designers are pushing the envelope and have become more creative than ever before creating unique lines, illusion details, plunging necklines and low backs like we’ve yet to see. Women are moving away from traditional bridal fashion and are not hesitant to be bold and daring, yet still sophisticated and timeless. Another trend I’m excited to being seeing this year is Women’s suits. I’ve been predicting this trend for quite sometime, and have even designed my own David Tutera Collection for the fabulous, trend forward woman. Ditching the dress and going for a clean, tailored look is something that’s really taking the front seat more than ever before and I’m really excited to be shining the light on that bride.

What are your thoughts on guests bringing their own cameras and taking pictures during the wedding ceremony? Our society has become so consumed with their phones and capturing photos to instantly post on social media, that it takes away from actually being in the moment and enjoying what’s before their eyes. Instead, they choose to watch something happen through a camera lens while it is actually happening right in front of them. My advice--enjoy yourself and your company and lose the cameras--enjoy the moment, because it won’t happen again! Besides, that’s why the couple hires a photographer, to capture everything while they (and you) can enjoy themselves. Ask the couple to send you the gallery of photos from their photographer after the wedding to look back on the amazing time you had.

I remember watching you on TV doing party planning shows years ago. What lead you to change your direction to weddings? I love planning all types of events and I still do all over the world. Planning weddings brought me a lot of joy, especially when we filmed it for my show, “My Fair Wedding” and I worked with brides that needed that extra hand and were so overwhelmingly grateful. It was so much fun taking the journey with couples toward one of the most memorable and important days of their lives. A wedding is not just a party, it’s deeper than that, it’s a celebration of love, and it was very rewarding to be apart of that from beginning to end.

FROM ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY By: Grace Crompton - Managing Editor CLINTON’S GUIDE TO GETTING MARRIED...

DAVID TUTERA

Thinking back on the first wedding you ever planned and the weddings you plan today, what would you say is the biggest difference? The biggest difference in weddings I plan today versus the first one I’ve ever done would probably be my experience, my knowledge and the relationships that I’ve developed with the talented team and professionals that I get to work with to make each event bigger and better than the next.

Brides on a budget look at where not to spend money, but what items shouldn’t they skimp on? Food and beverage are two very important components of a wedding and should never be skimped on. They can be the most costly yes, but the good news is that they are the most controllable! There should always be some sort of food and beverage for guests to enjoy at your wedding and that doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be a top shelf open bar or a five-course sit-down dinner. Buffet-style or even a cocktail reception with passed hors d’oeuvres is perfectly acceptable. And when it comes to the bar--never make your guests pay for their drinks! Yes, alcohol can be costly, but you can limit the offerings to a specialty cocktail or even just wine and beer.

Weddings can cause a lot of stress on both brides and grooms. Do you have some advice that may help them? Remember at the end of the day what it is really all about. Not what mom wants, or what Aunt Millie is telling you to do or even why Cousin Eddie is upset about not having a plus one. It’s about YOU…the couple and your celebration of love. So don’t fog your head with all of the hustle and bustle that’s going on around you, a lot of other people may think it’s their wedding too. These silly things will end up just falling to the way-side. So just enjoy the planning process, breathe and remember you and your bride/groom are on the same team and you’re both planning your celebration of love and marriage.

I always like to take inspiration from my everyday life and surroundings.

56 Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2016 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

What style of gown would you suggest for Florida Brides having their wedding on the beach? Two things you should always take into consideration when planning your fashion are your location and the time of year. For a beach bride in South Florida, which is known for its warm and humid weather, I would suggest a gown that is easy to move in, something light and airy yet perfectly timeless. The Nala gown that I designed for my David Tutera for Mon Cheri collection embodies just that. It boasts hand-beaded, three-dimensional lace over a satin slim A-line cage dress, with a chapel length sweep train---it’s truly perfect for that soft fluid movement on a breezy beach at sunset!

You are the author of several books, creator of bridal accessories and shoes, wedding dress designer for Mon Cheri – where do you get your inspirations from? I always like to take inspiration from my everyday life and surroundings, whether it’s from my experience with my clients, the people I meet or from my travels. From the different cities I visit throughout the year to architecture and art to pop-culture and nature--I get inspired everywhere and then use it in my work.

How does it feel to be a father? There’s no better feeling in the world. It’s truly rewarding.

What is going to differentiate the “Your Wedding Experience” show from the many other bridal shows we have in Florida? The difference between Your Wedding Experience and any other bridal show is the “experience” and the quality of vendors. It’s a one-of-a-kind live event, specifically tailored to engaged couples, offering endless wedding inspiration, reputable vendors and the best possible resources all under one roof. We’re not just having guests walk around and observe on the showroom floor, they’re able to interact, touch, feel, learn and experience everything from over 100 vendors that my team and I have hand-selected, to help guests create and plan their dream wedding. ALIINCE WONDERLaND

Real Wedding Inspiration

There is nothing better than a whimsical wedding, so when Star Noir Studio teamed up with Southern Sirens for a series of storybook inspired inspiration shoots, Custom Love Gifts And Events couldn’t wait to join in on the Alice in Wonderland themed wedding shoot. Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2016 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 73

ALIINCE WONDERLaND The theme opened doors to a whimsy, eclectic and a little avant-garde style perfect for a unique venue like the Knoxville Zoo. We started with eggplant purple linen with 3 dimensional rosettes from Campbell Tent And Party Rentals paired with a giant teapot overflowing with flowers and greenery from Melissa Timm Designs. A mix of floral arrangements and brightly frosted cupcakes in gold-rimmed tea cups from Vintage Inspirations added the perfect details. Spray-painting inexpensive clocks in silver was an easy DIY project that made the Mr. and Mrs. seating extra special. The cake from Sweet Beginnings By Elaine featured a mix of pearls, vintage brooches and even a miniature looking glass with a tiny teacup and a handcrafted “love” cake topper. A dessert table featured mini key lime pies, brownies and red velvet cookies from Bradford Catered Events and honey pot favors in pink and gold with Alice themed vintage look tags. The dress from Wedding Wonderland included a delicate lace neckline that flows down the back of the dress into a pool of soft organza and tulle. Our groom’s attire included a pocket watch similar to the design on the invitations. In keeping with a out of the box theme, we asked our mad-hatter to show off a little fire breathing skills with his lady by his side.

Glow in the

“Dark”

Things are Hair Color getting luminous Things are getting luminous with hair! Have you heard about Manic Panic’s glow-in-the-dark hair dye yet? It’s been around awhile, but there is a new awakening of the product. Manic Panic produces several choices of glow-in-the-dark hair dye. Some of the names of their dye series are “Electric Banana” and Siren’s Song”, but the selection of colors is vast. One of their most popular colors is Hot, Hot Pink. A few of the celebrities that have used the product are Lady Gaga, Cher, Demi Lovato and Heidi Klum. Rihanna showed the world the glamour of Manic Panic style with a stunning pictorial spread that made the cover of Vogue magazine in April 2011, and Katy Perry looked Pretty in Pink on the cover of InStyle magazine. If you’re looking to grab some attention at that after hour’s party, then After Midnight is the way to go!

Manic Panic store was born in 1977, when sisters Tish and Sooky opened their first boutique. It all went crazy afterwards, and that’s how you end up using their paint to make your hair glow in 2016. The two sisters were singers in the original Blondie line-up, they rocked at night and became business proprietors by day. Through its evolution, it has become the internationally renowned hair color it is today. Plus, it’s a very guiltless glow: the dye is vegan and crueltyfree - “tested on celebrities not animals!”

Foods that whiten your teeth!

Naturally! Strawberries...

They may be bright red, but malic acid, a chief component of this summery fruit, acts as a natural astringent to remove surface tooth discoloration, says Dr. Irwin Smigel, president of the American Society for Dental Aesthetics. Fresh, juicy strawberries taste great in any meal—salads, desserts, cereal—and are widely available at farmers markets this time of year, so getting your daily dose is both simple and delicious.

Seeds and Nuts...

Chewing these lightly abrasive, hard foods rubs plaque and stains off the surface of teeth, says Dr. Matthew Messina, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association. Pop a few almonds for a mid-afternoon snack—they’re full of protein, healthy fats, and the crunch you need to get pearly whites.

Apples...

The loud crunch you hear when you bite into this hard fruit may be annoying, but it’s also good for your choppers. Apples’ crispiness strengthens gums, and their high water content increases saliva production, dispersing and neutralizing colonies of bacteria that lead to bad breath and plaque, says Smigel.

Baking Soda ...

Take a toothpaste break and try brushing with this common ingredient. Baking soda is a base, like bleach, notes Messina, and the “soda”—which is actually a form of salt—in this pantry staple is a mild abrasive that works to scrub off plaque and surface stains.

Cheese...

Hard cheese, like the little blocks you get on those delicious appetizer trays, is full of calcium, which strengthens teeth and gums, explains Smigel. Plus, most cheeses are near colorless, meaning they won’t stain your teeth. So go ahead, order that cheese plate.

Celery and Carrots...

The same high water content that makes these veggies great for your waistline and your health also helps them whiten your teeth by stimulating saliva production, which aids in washing away food debris and strengthening gums, according to Smigel.

Oranges...

This bright fruit contains citrus, an acid that can wear away tooth enamel if ingested in large doses, making teeth whiter—but at a cost, says Messina. So while we don’t recommend gulping down bags of oranges in the spirit of a bright smile, a juicy helping once in a while is good for your pearly whites, and thanks to loads of vitamin C, your overall health too.

Onions...

Although they may not be the ideal pre-date snack, the notoriously bad-for-breath alliums could be beneficial to teeth. Because they’re colorless, they won’t cause surface stains, says Messina, adding that after eating them you’re more likely to brush—which is a surefire way to get whiter teeth.

RACHEL ZOE

TREND ALERT

Style DOs and DON’Ts

I started styling people when I was just eight years old, without even knowing what a stylist was. One of my guy friends wore only soccer clothes to school, and it bugged me because his family was very well-dressed—they always wore Ralph Lauren—and I knew he had better clothes! So I went to his house one day and set up looks for Monday through Friday. I laid them out head to toe with shoes and everything. Isn’t that weird for an eight-year-old to do? But he wore them and was so handsome. Fashion, style, taste—I know it’s all subjective. But at the end of the day, I think we’re all just trying to achieve that Pretty Woman moment when we go from God-knows-what-we-were-wearing to total princesses. Shouldn’t every woman feel like she has red-carpet moments? Just saying, shouldn’t we all live the dream? It doesn’t matter if you’re going to an office party or dinner with your boyfriend. It’s about feeling great in that moment and having a picture you can look at later and say “I turned it out that night.”

So here are my DOs and DON’Ts for style like that every day and what I’ve learned about living a happy life.

DO tread lightly on trends. You have to interpret what’s hot to make it work on yourself. If tweed suits are in but you’re not a suit kind of girl, wear the jacket with jeans and a pair of Converses. The idea is that you wear it the way that becomes the most you. For example, skinny jeans couldn’t be more in style, but they make my legs look really short, so I only do them with thighhigh boots.

DON’T wear pants the wrong length. Something that’s very painful for me is when people wear pants that are too short. I can’t, you know what I mean? Here’s the rule: Unless they’re cropped to ankle length on purpose, your pants should always skim the ground, like just a quarter-inch above the bottom of your foot. In the luxurious life, we would have different pairs of the same style hemmed for heels and hemmed for flats, but most of us don’t, so you have to choose. If you’re going to make the commitment to wear heels, your pants have to skim the ground. Please just commit. I can’t bear too-short pants. They make me crazy!

DON’T mix hardware Let’s say your bag has silver metal, but your jacket and your belt and your shoes have gold. No. I don’t love mixing.

DO go for pops. Accents of color always brighten you up, whether they’re from a trim, a bag, a shoe, jewelry, a hat, or a whole article of clothing. If you have on a pair of black trousers, and you do a great printed shirt with some beautiful floral print or a bold red color, your whole face can really come alive. The same goes for animal prints or sequins and glitz. But, I call it a pop because you should only wear one piece like that at a time. I’ve seen more women in all over looks, and I’m sorry but you just can’t. Pick one.

DO copy people Take someone in the public eye whose style you admire or whose body you think yours is most similar to, see what they do, and try to emulate it. It’s not bad to copy a celebrity—God, no! That’s what they’re there for!

DON’T get discouraged by a limited budget Listen, some of the people I know with the smallest spending accounts have the biggest style. The key is creativity in mixing and matching what you wear. Even the girls with Balenciaga bags or Lanvin flats pair them with H&M, Anthropologie, and Topshop. At this point fashion is so accessible, it’s easy to be on trend for very little money.

82 Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2016 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

DO think big picture Getting dressed is a head-to-toe experience, so you have to think about how your hair and makeup play into what you’re wearing. A ponytail always works. A pony, a braid, a messy topknot, please. Everyone in my office on any given day has a messy knot or a messy pony.

DON’T bedazzle. Seriously. Anything bedazzled should be gone. I can’t. With the spikes and the bedazzling and the script writing in rhinestones? No. We have to get rid of it.

DON’T rely completely on the mirror. I’d love to be able to say, “Look in the mirror to see what works best, and you’ll know,” but most people don’t know. Sometimes I don’t! We’re just not the best judges of ourselves, because we’ve been looking at our reflections for our entire lives. I thought blue looked like crap on me, and one day I wore a navy jumpsuit, and everyone was like, “Why don’t you wear more blue?!” The mirror might not always be the most helpful thing, but cameras don’t lie. They allow you to step outside yourself and see an outfit with an objective eye, so take pictures if you’re not positive about a look. And make sure you get lots of different angles.

DO remember that the best accessory is always attitude. I’m super self-conscious about my knees—they’re kind of chicken-y—so I haven’t worn a miniskirt or shorts since I was about 17. The point is that in order to look good, you need to feel good. If someone’s saying to you, “You look amazing in that skintight dress” but you’re miserably uncomfortable, it will show. You have to find the compromise between what looks best on you and what’s going to give you the most confidence. Half of beauty is the belief that you’re beautiful.

But the most major DO of all? Being happy! Now that I’m a mother, I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my entire life. Honestly, I’m a much different person than I was a few years ago because I just don’t sweat the small stuff anymore. The things that really used to sting, like people judging me? Now I’m able to recognize what’s truly important in my life—my son, my family—and take the high road. Hate is a very exhausting emotion. Trust me, I’ve felt it time and time again, and I still feel it for a select few people. But all hate does is turn you into someone that you’re not. In the end, taking the high road is so much more chic.

20’s VINTAGE STYLE

Photographer: Krystal Zaskey Photography

&

LISA DAVE

Lisa and Dave held the party of the century for their family and friends at the lavish and breathtaking Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami, FL. It was a true 1920’s romantic affair with blues, silvers and creams. Since Vizcaya itself was completed in the height of the roaring ‘20s, they wanted to enhance and celebrate that era. All the details were created to flow with the theme, which started with the attire of the wedding party. Each bridesmaid wore an Adrianna Papell Beaded Gown that harked to days past with vintage brooch chokers and feather hairpieces. With their messenger hats, suspenders and pocket watches, the guys including the ring bearers seemed to walk out of a 1920’s movie. The groom even sported a grey tailed tuxedo, bolero bowtie and snakeskin oxfords. Even the flowers girl joined in the fun with pearls and flower hairpieces. The bride wore an 11-tiered, hand beaded, masterpiece custom designed by Casablanca with a stunning necklace and brooch-accented bouquet. The space was adorned with a mix of round and king’s tables topped with large, candelabras draped with pearls, antique furniture and dramatic lighting.

A lounge area overlooking the water was the perfect space to get away from the party and enjoy a scotch. Each place setting had chargers with hand painted renderings of Vizcaya created by Chirp Paperie, individual thank you notes, and bells to ring if there was a need for the newlyweds to kiss! Guests spent the night dancing on the beautifully lit terrace followed by the send off when a vintage 1920’s car whisked the couple away at the end of the night. It truly was an affair to remember.

To the Moon

Tiffany McClure Photography

and Back

Soon after Ryan and Michelle started dating, they fell in love and felt like they’d known each other forever. Ryan didn’t waste any time and asked her to Marry him! They chose New Years Day to get married, read hand written vows to each other [that had everyone in tears] and celebrated with family and friends! Their theme was, “To the Moon and Back” paired with gold, cream, blush and sage details! Imagine a GIANT wooden moon photobooth that they crafted themselves, beautiful gold sparkly bridesmaid dresses, a truck load of mismatched china that everyone’s dinner was served on, an amazing arch with gorgeous swoon-worthy floral arrangements and a barn decorated top to the bottom! Their wedding day was absolutely perfect and one of my favorites to date! I blame them for my hope of shooting more weddings with THAT many details and creativity!

Real Weddings

A New Chapter

Sara Purdy Photography

Their journey started back in 2002. They had each wandered the halls, passing by one another until one day in study hall a conversation set their fate in motion. The first thing Amy recalls about that first day, was Jimmy’s smile. Bright, and warm. Sharing a love of sports, (though, now, rival football fans) food, and friends - From that point forward, they were inseparable. Flash forward to 2012. A brisk November Amy & Jimmy traveled to New York City for Amy’s birthday. It was here, that Jimmy would ask Amy to be his wife, and start a new chapter for their already blossoming lives together.

History of the Wedding Garter There are a few different thoughts about the origins of the garter toss tradition. One of the more common theories dates to the 14th century, and was a method of saving the bride’s wedding dress while spreading the luck of the wedded couple to their loved ones. At that time, brides were considered very lucky on their wedding day. It was thought that if one would take something from the bride on that day, they could have a little luck for themselves as well. This did not always go well for the bride’s dress, as loved ones would take pieces of it home with them, hoping to find love of their own. The garter toss was a way to change that tradition, as the garter was an article of clothing easily removed and tossed, granting one person the luck of the day to be the next to marry. Throughout history the garter toss has happened at different times during the wedding event, varying from being tossed at the altar immediately after the vows, or during the wedding reception as is done now, all the way to the end of the evening, as a sign that the couple was truly married & bound to one another. Some also believed it was tossed as a distraction to the guests, so that the bride & groom could escape to their chambers alone. Remember above all, that the garter has always been seen as a token of luck from the bridal couple to their loved ones-a way to pass on some of their happiness. A couple should have as much fun with the garter toss as they are comfortable. Go crazy or keep it simple. Or you may choose to not do a toss, and keep the garter as a memento. As with everything else on this day, it is up to you!

DUFF GOLDMAN Chef Duff Goldman founded Charm City Cakes in 2002, when demand for his extraordinary cake creations required him to fling off the oppression of his day job and follow his dream of being his own boss. Duff’s success came quickly due to his fearless attitude, unsinkable positive mentality, and passion for pushing the envelope. As the business grew, he brought together a team of exceptionally talented artists and talent that broadened Charm City Cakes’ portfolio and grew into one big happy cakemaking family.

From Duff comes one of our favorites called the Venice cake. A non-traditional cake for the bride looking for that showpiece cake. The vivid reds are contrasted by the elegant gold scrollwork. A Parisian style cake with a masterful design and attention to detail. Ideal for the elegant and opulent wedding setting in a grand ballroom setting.

BUDDY VALASTRO Buddy Valastro is a fourth-generation baker born into the business owned & operated by his parents. Countless hours were spent in the bakery where his father, Buddy Sr., a master baker, taught Buddy everything about baking and running a business. RON BEN-ISRAEL Ron certainly knows about opening nights: A former dancer, he fell in love with a chocolatemaker while on tour in Canada, and with typical resolve, he traded in his ballet slippers for a whisk and a spatula. Fortunately, the discipline he had acquired during years of scrupulous training and a rigorous performance schedule and during his military service in the Israeli army helped him as he pursued his new vocation. Like many aspiring chefs, he traveled to France and apprenticed in Cannes, Beaujolais, and Lyons. And so today, the master confectioner choreographs in sugar. His specialty and wedding creations are consistently featured in national periodicals, including Martha Stewart Weddings, Florida Bride Magazine and New York Magazine and are also prominently highlighted in books, such as Vera Wang on Weddings. Curtain up!” Never one to dissapoint, Ron Ben-Israel brings us this elegantly stunning white and gold five tier wedding stunner. Giving us visions of royalty and glamour this cake is sure to turn heads at any event.

CHRIST OPHER GARREN Ever since he was convinced to make his first wedding cake, Chris has worked to continually improve his art, learning by experimentation and pushing forward with constant innovation. In an industry ruled by trends and fads, Chris has built his success on his continued devotion to clean, precise work, cutting edge designs, and cakes of a truly singular quality. A self-proclaimed shy guy, Chris has made appearances on Food Network, FOX 11 Good Day LA, Access Hollywood, Entertainment Tonight, and numerous other national and international guest appearances on varied television programs and commercials. He travels and teaches internationally. Most recently he spent 3 seasons as a featured chef on the network show “Amazing Wedding Cakes.” Christopher is known for his elaborate and highly detailed cakes. This cake is one of our favorites. This very non-traditional cake is adorned with hand crafted florals and hand painted scrolls and murals. The delicate metallic outlines and beading really accent with the deep blues and the vibrant pinks.

Leanne Marshall was born in Yuba City, California with fashion in her blood. By age 12, her designs were being shown to the public in the form of costumes for her ballet and dance performances. She earned her degree at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Francisco where she went on to study. In 2008, Leanne was crowned the winner on Season Five of Project Runway and she relocated to New York City where she continued to develop the popular Leanne Marshall and LM by Leanne Marshall lines with both bridal and ready-to-wear collections. 1.

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

Through the experiences you had on Project Runway, what influences have had the most effect on your designs? Project Runway taught me a tremendous amount, but two things that quickly come to mind are working fast and the importance of editing. It was also a great lesson in balancing my design between art and what the client actually wants to wear.

2.

It must take a lot of effort in coming up with a new line. Where do you find your inspirations?

3.

When did you decide that you wanted to design for the bridal arena?

“5.

After Project Runway, I had hundreds of requests for bridal gowns. It was a very logical step for me.

When you see pictures of a bride on her wedding day wearing a gown designed by you, how does that make you feel? To be chosen to dress a woman for one of the most important days of her life is an amazing feeling. All of the gowns are made with love and care over the course of several months, so to actually see it on the woman is incredible. I am lucky to be able to make gowns that make women feel their most beautiful on such a special day.

Would you like to offer any advice to our readers on what they should look for when choosing their bridal gown? Be sure to keep your mind open. Because you like something in a magazine, does not mean it will be right for your body type. Try a wild card silhouette at every location you visit. You may find the gown of your dreams was one you never would have considered.

4.

I find my inspirations everywhere. Sometimes it is in the streets of New York, the fields of France or the work of an artist I admire.

It’s Cake Tasting Time!

CAKE – if there’s one thing, other than the wedding, that you can be sure the groom will be attending it’s the Cake Tasting! It’s the one thing couples look forward doing more than most other planning. Who wouldn’t love spending an hour eating cake? Trying different flavors and frostings to create that perfect wedding day dessert. However, there is a bit more to think about like what should you expect other than just eating cake? Here’s some tips we’ve put together for you prior to taking that first bite to let you know what you should expect during the consultation.

1

2

First, have an idea of what you would like your cake to look like. Gather your inspiration from magazines (check out our past issues and website) and online. Print the pictures and take them with you, or store them on your phone. Do you prefer fondant or buttercream and do you know the difference between the two? Do you want fresh flowers on your cake or sugar flowers or none at all?

You will need an estimate on the amount of guests that will be attending, so your cake designer has an idea of what the size of the cake should be. They need all the logistics of your wedding overview.

3

Your baker will go over options of pricing, so have a clear view of the budget you have set aside for your cake.

4 Keep in mind, the venue, time of year and location. These may have a lot to do with the look you are going for. If you are having your wedding on the beach then a nautical or seashell theme may be the way to go. 108 Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2016 ♥ www.florida-bride.com

5 6

You should let your baker know the date and time of your reception along with the location and where to deliver and setup the cake. Some bakers will have a set selection of flavors for you to taste, while others will ask you to choose which flavors you’d like to try.

8

7

It is all right to take family or friends to the tasting, but make sure they are helpful in the decision. Otherwise, it might be best for just the two of you to go. And, last but not least, forming a bond with your cake designer will help them understand your vision. Have Fun!

You’ll also discuss how the cake will be presented, whether you have a family heirloom cake topper or cake stand you’d like to use, or if you’re in the market for a piece to add to the design you can view www.oneweddingavenue.com for a cake topper to fit any theme.

So that all important guest just can’t make the wedding?

Don’t Worry... Periscope it!

You might have wedding guests that aren’t able to physically attend your wedding for one reason or another, the solution is live streaming your wedding through Periscope. Social media wedding planning is a huge part of a bride’s life and rightly so. From Pinterest for inspiration and mood boards, to Facebook and wedding websites as a way to keep your guests updated about your wedding plans. But with the rise of the latest social media platform, Periscope, there’s an app that can offer a solution for your long distance friends and family that weren’t able to attend the wedding. So what is Periscope, and how can your wedding benefit from it? The Twitter owned social media platform Periscope is a live streaming video app that lets you broadcast directly from your phone. That means you can stream your wedding, allowing people that couldn’t make it to share the celebrations with you. Of course you’d rather have everybody at your wedding rather than watching it through a screen, but there might be people that just can’t make it – a cousins in a different continent, friends living in a different country with small children. Rather than waiting for the wedding photographs or video, they can watch you get married, live. I know that there are social media sites launching and failing all the time, right? However, this is different, Periscope can be useful for something like a wedding, there’s a lot of random stuff out there, #WhatsInMyFridge type stuff, but you don’t have to get immersed in this kind of thing if you don’t want to. You can use Periscope for your wedding and then you can leave it alone, don’t worry, it’s not going to replace your Instagram, Vine and Twitter accounts. How does it work? Periscope isn’t the only new kid on the block, there’s another app that was launched slightly earlier and performing the same sort of role, Meerkat. Both of theses apps are currently only available on the iPhone at the moment, so you will need to download it from the App Store and you’ll also need a twitter account, but after that you’re golden. What you need to know about Periscope before filming The main consideration is about whether to broadcast on an open or closed feed. If you’re a massive social media player and like the idea that your wedding can be seen by anyone then off you go. Alternatively, you can limit who can watch it, which is useful for the more private brides and grooms out there. Tips for using Periscope The main advice that I would give to anybody using Periscope is to try and keep the camera as still as possible. There’s nothing worse that the feeling of motion sickness that you get from watching a hand held film, and you’ll notice that there isn’t an academy award for the best shaky cam film. You don’t need to go out and buy a tripod, but the person in charge of filming should try and find something to lean against to try and get the camera (phone) as steady as possible. Finally Don’t get too caught up in the production values of your live streamed wedding because Periscope is just that, a live stream, it’s not something that will be permanently available, it disappears eventually so don’t rely on this as the basis for your wedding film.

Ring in

unique ring bearer ideas your ceremony! Traditionally, the bands exchanged during a wedding ceremony are carried by a ring bearer, and displayed on a pillow. Now, however, it is common for brides and grooms to break with this custom, and to put their own creative spin on the ring presentation. Some couples have chosen to make a meaningful statement by attaching their rings to a bible, or enclosing them in an engraved wedding box. Other couples have rested the rings upon a hand-stitched pillow created by a family member. And others have incorporated their wedding theme by using a seashell ring holder for a beach wedding, or a wood slab for an rustic outdoor wedding.

One of the most eye-catching ring introductions we’ve seen involved the ring bearer carrying a mitt, with the rings set atop a baseball. Truly creative and fun! No matter the delivery method, we think these important rings should have an entrance worth remembering! How will your wedding bands make their debut?

Ways to Incorporate

children into your ceremony

Who doesn’t love to see children in the bridal party. They are so adorable, no matter what they do or don’t do. We’ve put some ideas together for you to incorporate them into your Special Day! For instance, children that are too small to walk up the aisle themselves could be pulled up the aisle in a wagon decorated in your color theme by someone in your bridal party. Once the children have gone up the aisle designate someone to take them to their seats. Children who are old enough to walk up themselves have recently been seen carrying signs announcing the bride’s entrance. Have the sign printed with the words “Here Comes the Bride”, or the groom’s name with the words “Here comes your girl”. Both are sure to get smiles from your guests. This trend has taken off in the last few years, and also works well when the position of flower girl and ring bearer have already been taken. Another role for the older children would be to have them walk your dog up the aisle. You may want to practice this with them to make sure the child can handle your pet well, and have an adult close by in case they need assistance. Teenagers can play the role of Junior Bridesmaids and Junior Groomsmen. If they are the couple’s children they can also place them in the position of their Maid of Honor and Best Man if they choose. Either way, they will appreciate being included in the ceremony as members of the bridal party. A children’s ceremony is a memorable part of the ceremony. The children are brought up during the ceremony, everyone joins hands and the bride and groom make promises to the children to always be there for them and include them in their lives. It is a wonderful confirmation of the family union and the love you share.

G rooms 5 Things Grooms Should Know

Corner

about weddings

Clueless about weddings? You’re certainly not alone. Here’s what you need to know before it’s time for the I do’s.

Wedding planning is stressful: Whether you’re concerned about a ballooning budget or

feeling the time crunch, you and your fiancée will most likely start getting on each other’s nerves at some point during the planning process. This is normal and not a sign to run for the hills. Make sure to schedule some non-wedding-focused time together to relax and unwind from time to time.

You’re half of the equation: While you’ve likely heard that weddings are all about the

bride, remember that it’s your day, too. You don’t want to look back on your wedding day and realize you weren’t involved with a single detail. Find some areas where you can handle the planning or make your mark, whether it’s on the transportation, food and drinks, entertainment, music, groomsmen gifts, honeymoon, etc. and run with it.

Choose your wedding party carefully: While it’s important to include your

brothers or other relatives and best friends in your wedding party, carefully consider those who may not be quite cut out for the responsibility. If one of your friends seems like a good pick, but habitually flakes or shows up late to events or tends to party too hard and embarrass himself, give him the gift of simply being a guest instead of entrusting him with a more important job on the wedding day.

Help register for gifts: It may seem easier to bow out of the registry process than

spending time poring over endless gift options, but it’s important to weigh in on gifts you’d like to see on the registry, too. You may not have as strong of an opinion on bath towels or water glasses, but you might want to include some lawn and garden tools, BBQ gear, man cave or home bar items on your list.

You may get emotional: This is one of the most important days of your life. Seeing your

closest family and friends gathered together, thinking about those who couldn’t be there, seeing your gorgeous bride walk down the aisle in her wedding dress and reciting your vows can easily bring on a few tears. Don’t let anyone give you a hard time about it. Embrace it and enjoy the day.

What Does the Groom Pay for? What costs are grooms and their families traditionally expected to cover? Because every couple and every wedding is unique, chances are that your expenses will differ from the following list. However, it should be a good starting point to begin planning your wedding budget. •

Bride’s engagement ring & wedding band

The bride’s flower bouquet

Boutonnieres for the groomsmen

Corsages for the mothers and grandmothers

Gifts for the groomsmen, ushers, and ring bearer

Rental of the groom’s tux, shoes, and other accessories

Marriage license and wedding officiant’s fee

Wedding day transportation from the reception site to the hotel or airport

The honeymoon and all travel associated with it

Writing Your Own Vows

Writing your own vows adds a unique touch to your wedding ceremony. However, we understand that vow writing isn’t a simple process. So instead of staring at a blank sheet of paper for hours on end, check out our writing tips below, and consider this the walkthrough before the big game. Vows typically have a defined beginning, middle and end.

Half-time

The Kickoff

State why you intend to marry and what marriage means to you. This would be the time to use any poetic skills you may have. It might also be an appropriate time to include a story that illustrates your love for the bride.

State your name, her name and your intentions for marriage.

Example — As husband and wife, I know we’ll be able to accomplish anything and overcome any challenges that stand in our way. From the moment I met you in college, I knew you were the one I was meant to spend the rest of my life with. As we began to date and get to know each other even better, these thoughts were confirmed. I have never doubted my love for you; in fact, it has grown stronger every day.

Example — I, Romeo, stand here ready to take you, Juliet, to be my wife, best friend and lifelong partner in marriage.

4th quarter Pledge yourself to your bride. This is where you’ll want to make the promises that will last a lifetime. This is the portion of the vows that you’d probably recognize by the words “in sickness and in health.” Example — From this moment on, with you at my side, I promise to always live by the vows I make today. I promise to give you the best future I can, and to be the best father I can when we welcome children into the world.

Tips for Keeping Calm on Your Wedding Morning

Planning a wedding comes with a lot of stress, and there are times you feel like screaming. There are times when you feel like calling the whole thing off and elope. If you have had those feeling’s you are not alone. Most couples share the same anxieties. A great idea for relaxation and taking some time out is meditation, an ancient practice yes, but effective. You’re asking, when do I have the time to meditate? Take the time, you deserve it! Stop what you’re doing, close your eyes and see if meditation will help you find some clarity and calm amid all of the chaos? True, planning your wedding is suppose to be one of the happiest times of your life, but it can also encompass every moment of your day causing a lot of pressure over what color your wedding napkins should be! It can encompass so much of your time that you forget to take care of yourself.

Tips to begin your Meditation 1. Find an alone space and time for at least 5 – 10 minutes. 2. Place your phone in the OFF position. You will need silence, and be away from all distractions. 3. Make a commitment of 5 to 10 minutes a day that you will be able to do something for yourself. This is super important (especially when you are starting out). Setting a timer will help you make a commitment to the meditation, and you will know the timer will ring when the meditation is complete. It will help you concentrate better.

4. Find your comfy zone, a yoga mat or somewhere comfortable to sit or lie. The important thing is that you’re comfortable. 5. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breathing. Pay attention to it as it comes in and out of your body. If this is difficult for you then place your hands on your stomach and feel it rise and fall as your belly expands and contracts. 6. Gently lengthen each breath making inhales and exhales a bit longer. Try to focus on the space between each breath. Notice the pause and silence between each inhale and exhale and let yourself sit in that pause for a bit. 7. Continue this until the timer rings. You will tend to stray onto thoughts of things to do, that will be normal. Just remember it is only 5 or 10 minutes and anything you needed to do will get done. This is Your Time! This will probably happen a few times, but try to keep on track and focus on your breathing. 8. When the timer goes off open your eyes and allow your breathing to return to normal. Take a moment and realize how you feel. Make notes of any ideas or inspirations that comes to you. Now that you know how good this makes you feel, you will want to find time for meditation every day.

From the bride: I love DIY and crafts and write about projects often on my blog, AngieAway.com. Pinterest was a great source of wedding inspiration for us, but I’m not sure I’d recommend trying as much DIY as we did coupled with a destination wedding! The luggage fees were not cheap to transport all those goodies to The Bahamas, but at the same time, I am so pleased with how everything turned out. The turquoise water and white sand in The Bahamas are so beautiful and so dramatic, we didn’t want to overshadow the natural beauty with too many bold colors. We stuck to blush and peach tones, accented with gold, bronze and silver. We used lots of shells & sand in our homemade centerpieces, with varying shapes of glassware and candles. We incorporated elements of fishing, sharks and travel into our decor. We made little message in a bottle favors for guests to take home.

How we met: How does an outdoorsy New York lumberjack / fisherman without a passport or a Twitter account end up with a nomadic, tech-addicted, globetrotting blogger? Rick was my little brother’s roommate, living in the same house I grew up in, believe it or not. Rick is everything I’m not – he’s mellow & relaxed and in no way attached to the internet, calendar, passport or social media. He’s such a good balance for the constant whirlwind of spreadsheets and itineraries that is my life. He keeps me grounded.

The only thing that really ever mattered to me is that we both share the same faith. God was writing our story all along. All our missteps eventually lead us to each other. Florida Bride Spring/Summer 2016 ♥ www.florida-bride.com 121

Ultimate Spring Colors After a winter of drab grays, dark coats and navy, we’re craving color. For a pick-meup, look no further than the spring/summer 2016 shows that wrapped last fall. We combed each runway and pinpointed the top colors that were most prevalent among the collections. Oscar Lopez the winner of Project Runways “Under the Gunn” certainly did not disappoint. For spring, Oscar and other designers gravitated toward Spring shades, like Cherry Red, Ocean Blue, Marsala and let’s not forget the Yellows. In contrast, the one other trending color is simply a mix of traditional Black and White, take a look at the top colors that swept the runways.

The Inspiration This collection is about the women unveiling their sensuality through transparencies, architectural shapes and details; revealing the delicacy and the strength of her nature and evoking elegance in a regal way.
