BLOOM KA-POW! CARMELO BLANDINO WASMER ART GALLERY

Artist Talk in U. Tobe Recital Hall: Saturday, January 14, 2023, 10:30 – 11:30 am Opening Reception with the Artist: Saturday, January 14, 2023, 11:30 am-12:30 pm

JANUARY 17 - MARCH 2, 2023 For Carmelo Blandino, art exists as a conduit to confront humanity’s uncertainty. Incapsulating the beauty of nature and historical painting in the context of experimental contemporary street styles, the artist examines universal truths experienced through his personal journey of healing and “rebirth” through decades of his painting practice. The paintings in this empowering exhibition range from large-scale explorations of abstracted florals and notions of nature’s heroism, to playfully concealed iconography in an attempt to strengthen and empower the motivation away from the mundane of the everyday and thwart the dark fringe of human uncertainty. Blandino is a creative superpower: his weapon a brush. Through his paintings, a metaphor of the joys of life are accessed, catapulting the viewer beyond the limitations of constructed reality into an exciting and invigorating world where good prevails!

art EVERYTHING IS NOTHING AMLgMATD ARTS COMPLEX COURTYARD

JANUARY 17 - MARCH 2, 2023 Everything is Nothing explores the experience of traveling through a lifetime of imagery, absorbing the visual information we encounter along the way and reconstructing the fragments into our collective memory. Consisting of hundreds of feet of material stretched over the Arts Complex courtyard, the overhead installation results in a visual mix of imagery cut from billboards and banners, colors and textures from lawn webbing and pennants, all woven together producing a cacophony of visual noise. As a functioning canopy, Everything is Nothing protects visitors from the sun under its vibrating shadow. AMLgMATD, a Miami-based collaborative studio established by Laz Ojalde and Natalie Zlamalova in 2014, experiments in works of art, design objects and environmental installations that reflect their love of unusual and overlooked materials. AMLgMATD’s modus operandi consists of incorporating historical and geographical research into their visual language, playing with the sense of nostalgia, the application of familiar materials onto new forms and unexplored materials into familiar settings while redefining their surroundings. AMLgMATD’s works are collected by private and corporate clients in Miami, New York and Los Angeles, and their WEBSTR stools are available throughout the U.S. in boutique and museum stores. Sponsored by Gene and Lee Seidler; WGCU Public Media; and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture

Community engagement is at the heart of Holly Hanessian’s creative practice. Her project-based artworks emphasize inventive solutions for social issues that connect people to new ways of thinking. In each project, she meets with community members on a one-to-one basis to build relationships, create ownership and collaborate. Her current project links plastic bottled water overuse to climate change and includes the production of Hurricane Emergency Art Kits and Go-Packs for seasonal assistance with hurricane preparedness and recovery. Hanessian’s artwork is positioned at the intersection of socially engaged art, design, craft and contemporary art. Many of the community-based art projects focus on at-risk populations who are often underrepresented and adversely affected by globalwarming events. The public-facing projects she develops are rooted in the need to create a collectively just and sustainable life for all. Hanessian is a professor of Art/Ceramics and MFA Graduate Program Director at Florida State University.

MATERIAL MEMORIES VESNA PAVLOVIĆ

U. TOBE RECITAL HALL, MUSIC BUILDING

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2023 6:00 pm At the heart of the Material Memories project is the question of what role photography plays in remembering history, both personal and public. What are the moments of our collective history that we keep, and which parts do we forget? What role do institutional archives play in the construction of collective memory? A single black-and-white photograph, found at the Museum of Yugoslavia in Belgrade, provoked a discovery into post-WWII history of socialist Yugoslavia. With a series of photographs and photographic installations, the artist presents a psychological portrait of the era of the Cold War, burdened with photographic representations of socialist propaganda. She turns her camera to the archives and years of accumulation of historical materials. Material Memories is dependent on the unfolding of memory and history, and their inevitable opposition. Like the image itself, the history appears fragile and slightly distorted. Photographs remind us that memory is a constructed phenomenon.

EL CÓNDOR PASA

MARIA DE BUENOS AIRES

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2022 7:30 pm

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2023 7:30 pm

Come explore Incan civilization in this rarely performed zarzuela (Spanish musical drama) as students of FGCU’s Bower World Music Ensemble present a fully staged musical production of Daniel Alomía Robles’s ”El Cóndor Pasa,” a tale that not only dramatizes a conflict between indigenous miners and American bosses, but one that also celebrates Peruvian pride in the face of foreign exploitation. Performed in Spanish.

Astor Piazzolla’s operita, “Maria de Buenos Aires,” represents everything Argentina – the tango, street slang, the working class and a passion that defines daily life. Join the Bower World Music Ensemble on a surrealistic journey with Maria, the title character who encapsulates womanhood, poverty, essential goodness and godliness. Performed in Spanish.

A stubborn doctor wants to save lives by bringing attention to a public health crisis, but his efforts are stymied by politicians and citizens concerned with economic repercussions. A comedy with tragic consequences. A tragedy with hilarious antics. An actor caught between acting and not acting. An antic disposition. A delay in justice. A rotten state. A just end.
