SS&EM

Message from the Vice President

MESSAGE FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT It is my pleasure to present to you the 2022-2023 annual report for the Division of Student Success and Enrollment Management (SS&EM) at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). This has been a year filled with challenges and resiliency, purpose, and humanity, only to be augmented by exceptional results. I attribute this to the outstanding efforts, hard work, and commitment of the staff in their drive to best serve the needs of our students. The academic year began with the unprecedented damage and destruction caused by Hurricane Ian. Without question, the Fall term was extensively disrupted, however, through their determination and fortitude, our staff and students worked together and re-established our safe and enriching environment. It was critical for our students and our Southwest Florida community to return to normalcy. Despite the hurricane setback, SS&EM was able to achieve significant milestones and accomplishments throughout the academic year. FGCU reached a historical record of over 16,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled; our freshman to sophomore retention was 81%, which represented an all-time high; and our 4-year graduation rate of 42.2%, marked another greatest achievement for FGCU. FGCU is committed to keeping costs low for our students and has decreased the average cost of attendance by 45% over the last 5 years. Not only has SS&EM attained extraordinary student success outcomes but has also continued to ensure that our student spaces are aligned with our student success efforts. We completed a major renovation to our new University Admissions Office, as well as made considerable improvements to our First-year Experience and Retention programs offices. We have started the design process for our Cohen Student Union which will undergo substantial renovations in phases, along with other noteworthy projects supporting our Experiential Learning & Career Development Services and Academic Support Programs & Services departments.

4

FGCU / SS&EM ANNUAL REPORT 2022-2023

SS&EM was also active in launching innovative programs and technology to support our students’ learning outside of the classroom. We are excited about our new STEM Pathways pilot program, and the refinements that have been made to our successful Eagle Advantage program. We made meaningful additions to our “Ask Azul” artificial intelligence chatbot platform, instituted a new online tutoring program, and in conjunction with our campus partners, helped launch a new online platform to expand the mental health services we offer to our students. During the 2022-2023 academic year, Student Success & Enrollment Management welcomed two new members to our team, Dr. Eric Tack, Associate Vice President for Academic Engagement and Dr. Jennifer Hammat, Associate Vice President for Student Engagement. Both are experienced senior leaders in higher education and bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to FGCU. In addition, the Division also underwent important organizational changes. The Department of Prevention & Wellness merged with Campus Recreation to become University Recreation & Wellness and the Office of Military & Veterans Success re-aligned under the Division to further capitalize on existing synergies and resources to further serve our FGCU Veterans. Lastly, Student Success & Enrollment Management thanks both President Emeritus Dr. Mike Martin for being a relentless champion for our students and their success and outgoing Student Body President Grace Brannigan for all her leadership in helping make FGCU a better place for our students. We are looking forward to our new leadership under Dr. Aysegul Timur, where her never ending studentcentered passion and energy has already been widely felt across campus within the first few weeks of her Presidency. We also look forward to working directly with our new Student Government President, Emory Cavin by supporting him and his Cabinet in leading the student body in achieving even greater heights. I am proud to share the accomplishments of SS&EM and look forward to the 2023-2024 academic year and all the wonderful opportunities that lie ahead! For Student Success,

Mitchell L. Cordova

Through these service hours, I was able to try out new hobbies, careers, and interests. As a freshman, I had no idea what I wanted to do after college. I knew that I loved the environment but didn’t know what kind of jobs that could lead me to. I used my service hours to work at multiple places in the community and try out different jobs to see what I liked. I love that FGCU makes it a requirement for students to get involved with the community and find new places and jobs that interest them. - Kayla, Environmental Studies, Spring 2023 Graduate
