22nd ANNUAL JURIED STUDENT

ART EXHIBITION MARCH 20 - APRIL 2, 2020

Geneviv Iriarte, Self-Portrait (detail), 2018, Ceramic. Photograph by James Greco

The FGCU Art Galleries is proud to feature all 66 artworks that were juried into the 22nd Annual Student Juried Exhibition. Jurying of the physical artworks was accomplished right before we shifted to an online only presence for the rest of the Spring 2020 Semester. In this unprecedented situation the Gallery Assistants worked diligently to photograph all the works for this online publication. We want to thank all the students who submitted works to the exhibition and to congratulate those who were selected. ~ John Loscuito, Director Florida Gulf Coast University Art Galleries

THE JURORS Julie Gerhard is the Director of the Cape Coral Art Center and Rubicond Park. She received her Bachelor in Art with minors in Spanish Language and Interdisciplinary Studies from Florida Gulf Coast University. Julie has directed youth ceramics programs for the City of Tempe, Arizona, acted as Cultural Ambassador in Spain for the Spanish Government as well as the served as Executive Director of a non-profit in Estero, Florida. Throughout her career she continues to be active in the creation of new work as it has transitioned from functional forms in ceramics to more abstract forms in ceramics and fiber.

Renée Rey is a painter and mixed media artist working in southwest Florida and New York City. In Rey’s telescopic and intimate artwork, Rey challenges traditional landscapes and self-portraits transforming them in mythopoetic universes. Formal language of abstraction and realism are ruptured and conflated in saturated color, staccato mark-making and symbolic iconography as she disrupts seemingly disparate associations between identity, cultural diversity, science, religion and environmental sustainability. Over a 26 year career, Rey’s artwork has been selected for national awards and exhibitions by art professionals, museum curators and gallerists, and has been collected internationally. The artist has studied visual art, computer art and art history on the undergraduate and graduate levels in New York and Florida. Rey holds an MBA in Management, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, an A.A.S. Interior Design, Parsons School of Design, New York, NY, an M.A. Jewish Education, Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, NY and a B.A. Judaic Studies; University at Albany, Albany, NY.

Melissa Minds VandeBurgt holds a Masters in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign, with additional certifications in rare books and special collections. She is currently the Head of Archives, Special Collections, & Digital Initiatives at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) in Fort Myers, Florida, USA. Before beginning her tenure at FGCU in 2012, she spent seven years developing digital services for special collections at California State University, Channel Islands’ Broome Library. Melissa’s passion for cultural heritage materials drives her desire to get special collections and rare books out of the vault and make them globally accessible to a broader audience through exhibition and digital repositories.
