OBS WINTER MIXED SALE

The Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company held their Winter Mixed Sale, the first auction of 2022, on Jan. 25-26 and started the year on a positive note with gains in nearly every area compared to the 2021 Winter Mixed Sale.

The two-day auction saw 417 horses generate gross sales of $6,693,100 compared to last year when 408 horses sold for $5,612,300. The gross sales rose 19.25% while the average increased to $16,051 from $13,756 a year ago, a 16.68% improvement. The 2022 median was $8,500 compared with the $6,000 median a year ago and the buyback percentage was 10.3% while the buyback rate last year was 21.3%.

For the Open session, held on the second day of the sale, 186 horses sold for a total of $2,075,600 compared with 236 horses bringing $2,023,500 in 2021. The average price was $11,159 compared with $8,574 last year, while the median price was $7,000 compared with $4,000 a year ago. The buyback percentage was 8.8%; it was 19.7% in 2021.

For the Consignor Preferred session, 150 horses sold for a total of $3,117,800, compared with 99 horses grossing $1,896,300 in 2021. The average price was $20,785 compared with $19,155 a year ago, while the median price was $10,000 compared with $10,100 last year. The buyback percentage was 12.2%; it was 30.3% last year.

For the Horses of Racing Age session, 81 horses grossed $1,499,700 compared with 73 selling for a total of $1,692,500 in 2021. The average was $18,515, compared to $23,185 a year ago, while the median price was $11,000. It was $13,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 10%; it was 12% in 2021.

Three of the top five selling yearlings at the Consignor Preferred session were bred in Florida including a daughter of Gun Runner out of Homemade Mo Nae, by Uncle Mo, who topped the session at $275,000. Bred by Carol Ann Reitman, Susan Gannon and Warren Miller, the filly was consigned by Get Away Farm as an agent as Hip 86 and purchased by Breeze Easy LLC, Mike Hall. Homemade Mo Nae is a half-sister to graded stakes-winner Conquest Two Step, graded stakes-placed Sheikh of Sheikhs and stakes-winner Homemade Salsa.

Hip 180, a bay son of Laoban consigned by McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds LLC as an agent, was purchased by Reeves Thoroughbred Racing for $160,000. He’s out of Steve’s Philly by Tale of Ekati, and is a full brother to current stakes winner Yo Cuz.

Hip 25, a yearling by Maclean’s Music, went to Woodford Thoroughbreds for $150,000. Consigned by Danielle Loya’s Silver Oaks Farm as an agent, the dark bay or brown filly is out of stakes placed Beauty for Ashes and is a half-sister to graded stakes-placed, stakes-winner Beautiful Shot.

Hip 253, Freedom Speaks, an unraced daughter of American Freedom consigned by Best A Luck Farm LLC, as an agent was sold to Reitman Stables LLC for $145,000 to top the Horses of Racing Age session. The 3-year-old gray filly, whose three furlongs breeze in :31.40 was fastest at the distance at the under tack show, is out of the Macho Uno mare Wicked Speed, a half-sister to Horse of the Year Fatal Bullet.

The fourth highest selling yearling was a filly by Mitole out of stakes winning-mare Lunarlady, by Yes It’s True consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck’s Summerfield as an agent. The bay filly, who was bred in Florida by the Vanlangendoncks in partnership with Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt, brought $130,000 on a final bid from Woodford Thoroughbreds and sold as Hip 112. Lunarlady won the Praire Meadows Debutante and is a full-sister to stakes-winner and graded stakes-producer Lunargal. Lunarlady is also the dam of graded stakes-producer Bella Cardella and is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes-winner Lunarpal and gradedstakes-placed Astrology.

Hip 349, Fifth Anniversary, was also purchased during the Horses of Racing Age Session and went to Robert Hickey for $120,000. By Runhappy out of the stakes-placed Hard Spun mare My Lady Lauren, the 3-year-old filly is also stakes-placed having finished second to Derrynane in the US$99,235 Woodbine Cares going five furlongs on the turf at Woodbine on Sept. 19. In her five-race career, Fifth Anniversary has two wins, both on Tapeta, and two seconds with earnings of $103,229. She won against special weight maidens at Woodbine on Aug. 14 and defeated first level, $75,000 optional claiming allowance foes going about five furlongs at Gulfstream on Jan. 19.

Hip 133 brought $110,000 from new owner Bach Stables LLC. She is by Vino Rosso out of stakes-winner Peisinoe, by Yes It’s True and was also consigned by Summerfield. She was bred by English Range Farm. Peisinoe has also produced graded-stakesplaced Proverb and is a half-sister to Grade 2-winner Concave and stakes-producer Celebrian.

Hip 122, a Florida-bred colt, sold for $100,000 to First Finds from the consignment of Beth Bayer. The colt is by Audible out of Mom’s Deputy, by War Chant. He was bred in Florida by Courtney Meagher and is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes-winner Mom’s On Strike.

The top selling broodmare went to H & E Ranch for $57,000. Hip 40, Sierra Aleone, a dark bay or brown mare by Gemologist, is a stakes-placed winner and sold in foal to Spun To Run.

Topping the Open Session held on the second day, Wednesday, Jan. 26, was Hip 505, who sold for $95,000 to Rosewood Farm. Last Drink, is a gray or roan colt by second crop sire Destin out of I Drink Alone, by Intidab. Last Drink is a half-brother to three stakes-winners in Bust Another, Bustin It and May Shares and was consigned by Sue Vacek as an agent. FH
