Back in Wellington for the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival, Venezuelan show jumper Emanuel Andrade has an impressive list of accomplishments for any rider. World’s Top Equestrians Return To Wellington For The 38th Annual Winter Equestrian Festival The 38th annual Winter Equestrian Festival is underway at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center here in Wellington. This 12-week world-class competition, the longest-running in the world, offers great opportunities for a wide range of skill levels. This month, we showcase all that WEF has to offer for riders and spectators alike, highlighting all that you can experience at the festival. This includes a look at just some of the amazing riders in our annual Faces Of WEF section. Along with the high-level competition, WEF also brings a significant philanthropic aspect, from hosting fundraisers for many nonprofits, such as one for the Equestrian Aid Foundation on Feb. 12, to the amazing Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments. The GCC returns Feb. 4 this year with a Super Hero theme. Now in its eighth year, the event is set to surpass the $10 million mark, helping hundreds of Palm Beach County nonprofits. On our cover this month is rising star Emanuel Andrade, who sat down with Wellington The Magazine to discuss his goals for the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival. The Venezuelan show jumper has an impressive list of accomplishments for any rider, but given that he is only 20, his success is astounding. Also featured this month is Wellington’s Torano family. The husband-and-wife team of Jimmy and Danielle Torano have been a staple at WEF for decades. Now they are joined in the show ring by children Natalia and Jimmy Jr. Wellington National Golf Club recently announced that Jordan Naftal has been brought on to be the club’s director of food and beverage services. Formerly of the acclaimed Jordan’s Bistro, Naftal has ambitious plans for Wellington National’s new Champions Bistro, set to open soon. Also this month, we catch up with Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital and learn more about the practice’s expansion into Wellington. For many people, winter weather sends them straight to South Florida, and the same is true in the equestrian arena. As the snow starts to fall in the northeast, riders at New York’s Old Salem Farm head to Old Salem Farm South in Wellington. Learn more about their annual pilgrimage in this month’s issue. We continue our new Wellington Sports series with young equestrian Leah Greenstein, who aims for stardom in the show ring. Elizabeth Fountain, this month’s Wellington Designer profile, shares her lifelong passion for interior design. Wellington Real Estate catches up with Shane and Peggy Clarke of Keller Williams Realty, while Wellington Health visits with ophthalmologist Dr. Kevin T. Kelly of the Retina Group. Wellington Home visits one of only 10 properties in Wellington’s newest gated equestrian community, Wellington Classic Estates. Finally, Wellington Table stops by Oak Bistro & Wine Bar to try the Spinach Eggs Benedict, this month’s signature dish, and learn more about the restaurant’s popular weekend brunch, which has been extended to Mondays this winter. Wellington The Magazine thanks our loyal advertisers and the many partnerships it takes to produce an issue jammed-packed with all the exciting happenings Wellington has to offer during the season.

Equestrian Aid Foundation To Present ‘Althea’ Show Feb. 12 In Wellington The Equestrian Aid Foundation is transforming the Global Dressage Stadium at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center on Sunday, Feb. 12 to present Althea, an evening of enchantment where former Cavalia artists and their equine partners tell an original, heartwarming tale of the powers of hope. This special evening, which benefits people from all corners of the horse world who have suffered catastrophic injury or illness, includes the Althea production with general admission seating, as well as VIP cocktails and dining with live and silent auctions. Highlights
of the auctions include a vintage 1987 Mercedes 560SL, a month of training with a 2016 Rio Olympic Dressage Team member Steffen Peters, a sunset yacht cruise and more. “The Equestrian Aid Foundation wants to share a once-in-a-lifetime expe-

rience with the people and companies that have given so much to our horse community,” Equestrian Aid Foundation President Stephanie Riggio Bulger said. “As more people understand Equestrian Aid’s purpose and passion, they will appreciate how quickly life can change for people involved with horses because of an injury or illness, and they will want to get involved and help.” The Althea show itself is tribute to the special relationship that humans have with the horse. The 40-minute performance tells the story of Caleb, who has lost hope and finds himself in a land where a mystical stallion, Althea, holds the power of healing. The producer of the show, Keith Greco, believes in mixing decor and entertainment to produce a captivating main stage performance. Aside from producing Althea, Greco has produced movie premieres plus high-end commercial events and has worked in the special events department for Cirque du Soleil for more than 25 years. ing the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ grand entrance and showroom décor in 2013 and is now the SAG Awards event designer. He has also worked on the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, Calif., and worked with Roland Emmerich in redesigning the well-known Dar Maghreb restaurant off the Sunset Strip. Greco is very excited to be working with the Equestrian Aid Foundation
because he grew up riding horses in California and has not worked on a performance with horses since 1992 when he worked on the movie The Fisher King. He believes that environmental experiences should be a larger part of special events. It is not surprising that Althea’s equestrian ballet combines performing arts and acrobatics with multimedia, special effects and music. Together, these ele-
ments spirit the audience into a mythical Greek realm where mounted gods and goddesses help a desolate man triumph over a fall from grace to regain hope and his primordial wings. Althea’s cast includes former Cavalia stars such as Sylvia Zerbini, whose signature act is performing with a group of liberty stallions; Caleb Carinci, who combines bareback riding with breathtaking aerial acrobatics; and Kansas Carradine, a theatrical rider and roper who curated the production specifically for this event. “Equestrian Aid’s goal is to make this performance accessible to all in South Florida,” EAF Executive Director Louise Smith said. “It is exciting to have the chance to celebrate a cause that is meaningful to the equine-centric community of Wellington, which we can also share with the community at large.” Derived from the Greek God of healing, Althea creates a depiction of horses with magical healing powers, which

resonates with the mission of the Equestrian Aid Foundation. The EAF was founded in 1996 and is a nonprofit organization that strives to assist individuals from all riding disciplines, equine professions, backgrounds and ages who are coping with catastrophic injury or illness. To date, the organization has given more than $2.7 million in direct aid to grant recipients. “Since its inception, the Equestrian Aid Foundation has helped individuals in the equestrian community who need assistance coping with adversity,” founding board member Robert Dover said. “Through events like this, we raise funds that help to change and improve lives. The foundation began and is still based in Wellington. We appreciate the community support.” The Equestrian Aid Foundation is also committed to promoting safe riding and horse handling practices to the almost 30 million people in the United States who interact with horses. Accidents can easily occur, as a horse can

The Equestrian Aid Foundation shares a passion for all equine companions and is committed to assisting those who are seriously ill and injured in rebuilding their lives. This event will assist
the foundation in making a difference. Althea is an innovative and thrilling theatrical experience that local residents will not want to miss. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12 at the Global Dressage Stadium, located at 13500 South Shore Blvd. in Wellington. World’s Top Equestrians Return To Wellington For The 38th Annual Winter Equestrian Festival The 38th annual Winter Equestrian Festival has returned to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington for 12 weeks of world-class equestrian competition. The largest and longest-running equestrian circuit in the world, WEF awards more than $9 million in prize money and offers unrivaled opportunities for international show jumpers to earn valuable FEI World Ranking points. The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center is home to the season’s major events. It encompasses a total of 500 acres, with competition rings alone covering more than 80 acres. PBIEC has two core facilities containing 18 competition arenas, including a grass jumping field and the largest covered arena in the world. Making the event unique, WEF hosts more than 70 different divisions for competitors of every level, from leadline to Olympic-level show jumping. Children, juniors, adults, amateurs and professional riders of every age, from 43 countries and all 50 states, bring more than 6,500 horses and ponies to participate in events throughout the winter season. With so many opportunities to compete during the 12-week circuit, WEF provides valuable education and experience for every horse and rider, making Wellington the world’s most popular winter equestrian destination. Georgina Bloomberg, the No. 8 rider in the Rolex/United States Equestrian Federation Show Jumping Ranking List, has been coming to Wellington since she was junior rider. She enjoys being based in Wellington for the winter in order to enhance her riding and her horses’ education. Having horses at all levels, the Winter Equestrian Festival gives her a chance to improve them all. Bloomberg is competing with two
young horses at WEF this year. Both are 6 years old and are homebreds where Bloomberg rode both their dam (mother) and sire (father). “It’s great to have many classes each week for them to keep getting the experience of competing in the show ring,” she explained. “It really shows how much they develop over the months.” While young horses are the future, Bloomberg is excited to compete with her top-level horses at WEF against the best in the world. “I’m looking forward to Saturday Night Lights. I love being in the spotlight and the feeling of pulling off a clear round in front of the crowd that comes to watch,” she said. “WEF is the hardest competition in the world because you not only deal with the best riders, but also the biggest numbers. You are riding against good riders, and a lot of them. You have to be on your game every class if you want to win. There are no easy wins at WEF.” The extended amount of time that horses and riders spend at WEF can be a benefit to both, Bloomberg added. “You get a chance to develop yourself as a rider and work on your relationship with your horses,” she said. “We travel so much, and when we are at other shows, we can usually only bring a few horses. To be able to ride and compete all of your horses every week, like at WEF, is rare and gives you more time with them.”

Top international show jumper Lauren Hough calls Wellington home but spends much of her year traveling to compete around the world. She also enjoys the opportunity to show in one location throughout the winter months, taking advantage of the 12-week circuit to develop her young horses, while also competing her more experienced horses in grand prix competition. “Wellington is home for me, so it is always nice to be in one place, and not have to pack a bag,” Hough said. “Florida is great for developing the young ones, and, obviously, it is top-level competition at the five-stars. There is a place for all of the horses to develop and showcase the best ones at the highest levels of competition.” Between Hough and her three students, the circuit is going to be busy, with 18 to 20 horses showing. “I will be bringing along a new group of young horses,” Hough said. “My top horses won’t start until a little bit later, as I am still competing in Europe until the start of the circuit. My students will get going early on. We are all very excited for a new year, and Florida is always a nice way to start it off.” Oliver Kennedy is another familiar face (and voice) of the WEF circuit each
year, serving as an international judge and ring announcer, as well as bringing horses and riders to Wellington from his family’s ESP Farm in Maryland, where his wife Rachel is head trainer. “This is my 12th year in Wellington working at WEF,” Kennedy said. “It is always fun for me to work at WEF because the quality of the horses and riders is so high. The competition is some of the best we see all year long.” Spending time in Wellington is always special, he added. “What is fun for my family is that I can come down and work either judging or announcing all winter long, and my wife Rachel can bring the whole barn and all of the clients down for the winter season,” Kennedy said. “We always have great circuits in Wellington, and we have riders showing in the Low Adult Hunters, all the way up to the big jumpers.” While trainers from across the country and around the world bring their students to train and compete at every level of WEF competition, the world’s best riders have unparalleled opportunities to participate in top competitions in Wellington. Highlights of the 2017 WEF circuit include four weeks of CSI5* competi-

tion. The five-star grand prix events will be featured on Saturday nights, Feb. 11, Feb. 25, March 11 and March 25. The $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*, previously held in the 12th and final week of competition, has been moved to Week 11 this season. An international fan favorite, the popular $150,000 Nations Cup, returns during Week 8 of CSIO 4* competition, where teams represent their countries over two rounds of competition to see which nation is best. A fantastic night of sport and fun at PBIEC, the exciting event brings horses and riders from around the globe to compete on Wellington’s international stage on Friday, March 3. As always, several events are taking place on the grass jumping field at the PBIEC Stadium this season. Two of the big events scheduled for the derby field this year include the $216,000 Ariat Grand Prix CSI 4* on Sunday, Feb. 5 and the $50,000 USJHA International Hunter Derby to conclude the circuit on Sunday, April 2. The Suncast 1.50m Championship Jumper Series returns in 2017 with events hosted both on the Stadium’s grass jumping field and in the main International Arena at PBIEC. The annual series features great prize money and more opportunities for international riders to earn valuable world ranking points. While the established show jumpers take on the major grand prix events throughout the circuit, the Hollow Creek Farm Under 25 Grand Prix Series returns this year, offering opportunities for up-and-coming grand prix competitors to gain valuable experience as well. Thanks to new title sponsor Hollow Creek Farm, the U25 series will offer 10 events throughout the circuit, totaling $215,000 in prize money and giving young riders a valuable steppingstone

WEF
Celebrate Saturday Night Lights At The Winter Equestrian Festival Every Saturday night at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, members of the local community are invited to attend the Saturday Night Lights events at the Winter Equestrian Festival. The 12-week WEF circuit features top horses and riders from around the world competing five days a week at PBIEC, with the best of the best contesting the most challenging obstacles each Saturday night under the lights in the International Arena. Complementing each week’s actionpacked competition, Saturday Night Lights features live music, a variety of performers, shopping, dining and more. Every Saturday night through April 1, PBIEC is the place to be in Wellington. Equestrian Sport Productions, the management company that produces the Winter Equestrian Festival, welcomes all Wellington-area residents to come and experience the nightlife and thrilling sport. Always family-friendly, Saturday Night Lights features a kids’ fair with a Venetian carousel, bounce houses, face painting, pony rides, magicians, a petting zoo and more. Prior to the start of competition, each week features members of a different Wellington school showcasing their talents, from singing to dancing, as well as a performance of the national anthem. Wellington Councilwoman Tanya Siskind, who is just wrapping up six years as president of the Binks Forest Elementary School Parent-Teacher Association, enjoys how WEF has brought the community together through Saturday Night Lights.
“I think it has been fabulous to bring the children and their families out to the horse show,” Siskind said. “The Saturday night events really engage the schools and the whole community. I think there were a lot of people who had lived in Wellington their whole lives and never gone out to the showgrounds because they thought they had to be a rider or be involved in the sport.” She thanked the horse show promoters for working to really engage the whole community. “We have this wonderful facility right in our back yard, and a lot of people started going out there more often,” Siskind noted. “[A Saturday night event] is a really great way for the schools to fundraise and showcase the students and their talents, and it is great for other people who attend these events regularly and are able to see how great the Wellington schools are and what they have to offer. I think it is a win-win event for everyone.” In addition to her involvement through the school, Siskind’s daughter rides and shows at WEF and trains at the Palm Beach Riding Academy, which is based at PBIEC. They look forward to another successful WEF season. Also part of the pre-competition fun and community involvement each Saturday night, local dog rescues are given the opportunity to set up at the entrance to the show grounds, where everyone can meet the adorable pups wellington the magazine | february 2017

WEF that they have up for adoption. The dogs and their handlers then parade around the arena for the entire crowd to see with hopes of finding those and other dogs their forever homes. Another fantastic initiative designed to engage the Wellington community is this year’s new Animated Ringside Chalk Art Festival, honoring young talent and Palm Beach County philanthropy, on Saturday, Feb. 4, as part of the festivities for the Great Charity
Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments. Each Wellington school will be provided with a 4-foot by 6-foot giant chalkboard, along with pastel chalk supplies. The theme of the night is “Animated Characters for Philanthropy.” Students and their art teachers will have from 2 to 6 p.m. on Feb. 4 to bring their creations to life on the PBIEC grounds. Awards for Most Original, Most Inspiring, Best Representation of the Theme and Best Overall will be awarded that evening. Each school’s art department is guaranteed a minimum of a $1,000 donation for taking part in this initiative. While Saturday nights at WEF offer lots of fun activities for children and their families, the nightlife is also not to be missed for guests 21 and over. Those making it a night out without kids can enjoy margaritas from Tito’s Tacos or beer and other cocktails at the Tiki Hut.
The Gallery Night Club at PBIEC also offers a stylish modern lounge that is open to the public every Saturday night with table seating and VIP bottle service available. The club features great DJs and dancing following every Saturday Night Lights competition. Put Saturday Night Lights at WEF on your to-do list this winter. General admission is free, and parking is $20 per car. Find a full schedule and more information at www.pbiec.com.

Equis Boutique carries brands sourced from European companies and strives to introduce their products to a new market in North America. There is no better place to accomplish that than in Wellington during the winter season.” For anyone looking to grab a bite to eat throughout the day, a variety of food vendors are located around the property, including: Tito’s Tacos, the Tiki Hut, Coliano’s Pizza, Loopy’s Crepes, Nathalie’s Café and much more. Sponsors Continue To Make WEF One Of The Best Shows In The World The success of the Winter Equestrian Festival would not be possible without the dedication and generosity of many wonderful supporters. An iconic sponsor of equestrian sport since 1957, Rolex stepped up to become the “Official Timepiece of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in 2014 and has since taken competition at WEF and PBIEC to the next level.
Rolex is the title sponsor of the Week 11 CSI 5* competition this year on March 22-26. An important change to the schedule in 2017 will see the $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5* featured in Week 11 on Saturday, March 25.
Of course, there is plenty of action before then. As the 12-week circuit began, WEF Week 1 kicked off Jan. 11 thanks to title sponsor Wellington Regional Medical Center, which also served as the presenting sponsor of the always popular $75,000 Battle of the Sexes. Week 1 then hosted the $75,000 Rosenbaum Mollengarden Grand Prix on Sunday, Jan. 15.

The GREAT CHARITY CHALLENGE, Presented By Fidelity Investments, Highlights Season For Area Charities What if you didn’t have to remain a child to dream of miracles? Once again, the Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments, will aim to raise more than $1.5 million, which will bring the event’s fundraising and distribution total to more than $10 million over eight years. Heading into its eighth annual event, the Great Charity Challenge returns to Wellington during the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival circuit on Saturday, Feb. 4. With fun and creative themes over the years ranging from Super Heroes to Fairy Tales, the event has brought thousands of people to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington to celebrate those who have dared to imagine a better community: the sponsors of the Great Charity Challenge, the riders donating their time and horses, and all those involved with the charitable organizations.
To date, the event has distributed more than $9.2 million to more than 200 nonprofits in Palm Beach County. This year, the event has a goal of raising a minimum of $1.5 million to add to this incredible fundraising amount, thereby surpassing the $10 million milestone. Founded in 2010 by Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo and his daughter Paige, the Great Charity Challenge has seen the equestrian community take charitable giving to a new level through the love of equestrian sport. The event has impacted thousands of lives through its unique
equestrian competition, with 100 percent of its proceeds donated directly to Palm Beach County charities. Equestrian Sport Productions, the managing organization of the Winter Equestrian Festival, the Adequan Global Dressage Festival and the International Polo Club Palm Beach, cover all costs associated with the Great Charity Challenge to ensure that all donations go straight to work. “We are very excited to also welcome all the public schools in Wellington that evening,” Paige Bellissimo said. “Not only are their PTA/PTOs the only automatic entry in the event, their art departments will showcase their talents in the Animation Ringside Chalk Art Festival. Pairing young talent and philanthropy seemed like the perfect fit for this magical evening.” With more than 300 applications re-

Charities Chosen To Compete In The 2017 GCC Cancer Alliance of Help and Hope Inc.
GCC ceived for the chance to participate in the 2017 event, 33 lucky charities have been drawn to date, and two wildcard spots will be randomly selected on the night of the event itself. Additional grants will be awarded that evening as well. While most organizations are supported and funded via the community, the Great Charity Challenge fills a true need to cover operating expenses — expenses that many donors shy away from supporting. With the initial plans of how the money won will affect these lucky organizations, it is safe to say that the 2017 Great Charity Challenge will have a lasting impact in Palm Beach County. Grandma’s Place, an organization that provides shelter and loving care to children who have suffered abuse and/ or neglect and have been removed from
their homes by the Florida Department of Children & Families, is one of them. With growing needs, they are looking to expand support programs for children at the shelter and are also in the process of moving. Funding will assist the nonprofit in serving more children than in the past. The Light House Café Ministries of the Glades served 54,000 meals last year. Money received from the Great Charity Challenge will assist the nonprofit with general funding and operating costs to ensure that it can continue serving its clients. “This eighth year is a milestone for the GCC,” Bellissimo said. “As of Feb. 4, 2017, we will have officially surpassed the $10 million donation mark. Venezuelan Show Jumping Star Emanuel Andrade Feels At Home In Show Ring Story by Julie Unger • Photos by Starting Gate Communications
Back in Wellington for the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival, Venezuelan show jumper Emanuel Andrade has an impressive list of accomplishments for any rider. But when you factor in his age — he’s only 20 — his success in just a few short years is astounding. Just in 2016, Andrade racked up almost 100 top-10 finishes. His love for horses, and show jumping, started at a young age. “I was 5 years old, and I was always into the horses. I started in my country, Venezuela, with ponies, how everyone starts. I just kept going until now. It has been a long time,” Andrade said. A few years after he began riding, his sister, Maria, took to the saddle. The rest of his family quickly followed suit. “Everyone is into horses now,” Andrade said. “It wasn’t something from my family — it started with me.” The 20-year-old has won enough ribbons and classes to put him in the same category as more seasoned, experienced riders — he qualified, and competed, at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. “It was a great experience,” he said. “I had already jumped everything, and
60
I was only 19. I didn’t even realize it. I didn’t even think about it.” Competing with the best riders and horses in the world, a moment that elite equestrians long for, was a dream come true. “It was very, very nice. It was an amazing experience for me. The place was beautiful,” he recalled. “It is different; it’s not like a normal game.” While Andrade didn’t finish near the top of the show jumping field in Rio, he was the youngest jumper competing, and he still considers it a high honor. “No matter what your score is going to be, you just want to be there,” he said. Andrade earned his spot in Rio by placing sixth at the Pan American Games in 2015. “It was amazing,” he said, of qualifying. “I didn’t get a medal. I jumped off for a medal, and I got sixth place. That’s
what got me the pass to go to the Olympics. The Pan Ams were probably more important for me, because if I didn’t do good there, I wouldn’t have gone to the Olympics.” Andrade is humble about his Olympic experience, noting that he feels lucky to be able to be called an Olympian — a title no one can ever take away. “Some people think it’s easy, and it’s just because I have a lot of horses that I got into the Olympics. But I feel that, you can give all of my horses to a lot of people, and the results won’t be the same,” he said. “It’s a lot about intuition… It’s not about just the horses, it’s about how hard you work. Be there every day and jump, jump, jump. I don’t have a kid’s life. I don’t have a 20-yearold’s life. I work really hard for what I want with my horses, which is good, because it’s paying back, and I’m happy.” His hard work, dedication and tireless attitude got him to the Olympics, and his future goal is to return and do better. “I want to do it better next time, and next time better, and I want to go again,” he said. “I feel like that’s the goal — always try to do better.” One of the secrets to his success, he said, is always competing. While he hopes to continue his education, for now, Andrade is focusing on his riding. He’s working hard and preparing for the future. Andrade is looking forward to competing in the Great Charity Challenge at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, as well as the Winter Equestrian Festival itself. Since competing at WEF, Andrade has enjoyed taking part in the Great Emanuel Andrade and his mount Bonjovi (left) in the show ring at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center and (right) spending some quality time together.

Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments. He also enjoys working with the Step by Step Foundation and its founder, Liliane Stransky. “I started riding here seven years ago,” he said. “When I got here, I met the lady who is the founder of the organization, and she’s Venezuelan. She asked me to jump for her.” Andrade donated his prize money to purchase toys for kids and has been doing it ever since. He helps purchase and deliver the toys, too. “It’s great. It’s super-special,” he said. Many of the toys go to children at the Kids Cancer Foundation, as well as children benefiting from other foundations through the Great Charity Challenge. “I love that show,” he said. At WEF last year, Andrade ran into a few difficulties and didn’t do as well as he had hoped. This year, he is going to do the best he can and enjoy the experience. “I’m not looking for anything specific,” he said. “I really want to have a nice time and enjoy the moment… I want to try to do the best I can. If I win, good. If not, I enjoy the moment, which is good.” Working with the show’s organizers and his father, Andrade helped to have Hollow Creek Farm, his home base, sponsor WEF’s Under 25 Grand Prix Series, which takes place throughout the 12-week festival. “I realize the vision that is also very important for young riders like me. First of all, WEF is very hard, competing against the best riders in the world,” he said. “These classes are kind of the same, for young people, and I feel like that is very important to get ready for the future.” For young riders, being able to compete with one another gives them both the chance to go up against with their peers and also prepare to compete against those with more experience, he explained. “Everyone is very good. Riders are coming from all over the world to compete at WEF, and the Under 25 Grand Prix Series is open to riders of all nationalities. The classes have been sanctioned as CSI-U25 events by the International Equestrian Federation (FEI). The competition allows up-and-coming riders a chance at the spotlight that they might not otherwise have when competing against more seasoned riders. On his journey toward becoming a
seasoned rider, Andrade competes often, and every chance he gets. “I feel like every time I go into the ring, no matter what, how difficult it has been going, it’s just very exciting for me. I love it. I love the feeling. It’s always the same,” he said. Whether he is showing his horses, or showing for his first trainer, Andrea King, Andrade is focused on improvement. “I’m always riding. In 2017, none of the major championships — the World Equestrian Games, the Pan American Games or the Olympics — are on the schedule, which means Andrade and other riders will be concentrating on enjoying what they do and preparing for the future. Come 2018, the Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina will be hosting the 2018 World Equestrian Games, and he has already rented a house nearby. He spent his summer traveling and competing, whether in Tryon, Kentucky or Calgary. But for now, he’s back in Wellington, competing at WEF. “I can’t believe we’re here again,” he said.

The Torano Family: United By Horses And At Home In Wellington By Lauren Fisher
The husband-and-wife team of Jimmy and Danielle Torano has been a staple of the Winter Equestrian Festival and the South Florida equestrian scene for decades. Jimmy grew up in Miami, riding with his mother as a child and competing in the hunter/jumper ranks as a junior with top trainer Don Stewart. At the age of 18, he turned professional and began working as a rider and trainer at Palm Beach Polo & Country Club. Several years later, Jimmy met Danielle Laurenzo when she came to train at the facility in her final junior year. Danielle started at a young age as well, riding with Leslie (Burr) Howard, before meeting Jimmy in 1990. While Jimmy was training Danielle, the pair also began dating. They became engaged in 1993 and married in 1995. During this time, Jimmy decided to start his own business, and JET Show Stables found its home base at Dani-
elle’s family farm in Fort Lauderdale. Jimmy and Danielle have since ridden at the Winter Equestrian Festival every season, making the commute from Fort Lauderdale for years, until recently moving to a new facility here in Wellington. That makes the busy show days much easier, which is now a necessity as the couple also has two children who keep them constantly on the go. In 2006, daughter Natalia was born, and in 2010, Jimmy Jr., or “JJ, followed. Each child sat on the back of a pony before they could even walk, competing in the leadline division at WEF as babies, and developing an immediate love of the family sport. Now 10 years old, Natalia is showing this year in the

Children’s Ponies, while JJ, at 6, hopes to move up to the Short Stirrup. The Torano family lives right down the street from the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington’s Equestrian Club. This December, the Toranos celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary, and the couple heads into the 2017 show season with the whole family ready to compete. “It is so convenient when everything is right here,” Danielle said of the kids growing up at WEF. “They look forward to going to the show, and even when they are not riding, they like being around and hanging out with their friends. This is a huge part of our life, and we are thankful that it is right near our home.” The winter season is always a busy time for the family. “I think it is busier than it has ever been in recent years,” Danielle said. “We always look forward to the WEF circuit. At one point we did not do customers; we just had sale horses, so that was a big deal to have horses ready at that time 68

of the year so that people could look at them. Now we do both the sale horses and customers, so WEF is definitely a focal point of our year.” Jimmy agreed. “Now that we have a farm here in Wellington, showing at WEF is way more convenient. We are already bursting at the seams with horses. Every day we get calls. We have a lot of new clients and new horses,” he said. “I am riding some outside horses; Danielle and I are both doing the grand prix events; and now the kids are riding, so it is going to be a very busy winter for us. I have been helping the kids at home, and I try to come and watch them and be supportive when they are showing. It is fun having them ride; they seem to be enjoying it.” A typical day for the Torano family in Wellington is always on the move. During the week, Jimmy is at the showgrounds Tuesday through Sunday, “pretty much sunrise to sunset,” Danielle said. The busy mom is in and out during the week. She rides in the morn-
ing and shows during the day, but always tries to be done in time to pick the kids up from school. She then spends the evenings running them around to different activities, and when Jimmy is done for the day, he joins in on the fun. “The kids are involved in so many things, so they keep us on the move,” Danielle said. “My son plays baseball and basketball, and my daughter does ice skating and ballet, so they are pretty busy. I am the chauffeur. After 2 o’clock comes, I am in the car driving them around.” On the weekends, it is all about the horse show. With their close home location, the kids are able to ride and then come and go during the days, but when they do not have other activities, the family is at the farm and showgrounds for the duration of Saturday and Sunday. “Normally, we have around 25 horses in our stable, and they all alternate in and out to show, and then Jimmy has some outside customers that he helps,” Danielle explained. “Then he has a lot

There have been a couple of times Jimmy hasn’t shown, and I hate it. Then all of the pressure is on me to win some money! We have been showing together for so long. It has definitely been a journey, but we much prefer to do it together.” While any equestrian will tell you that horses take up most of their time, and any parent will say that kids do the
same, Jimmy and Danielle still find time for themselves. Danielle took up tennis four years ago, and the couple enjoys playing every Monday. They also stay in shape with cardio workouts on Mondays and Tuesdays with some fellow equestrians. During the summers, JET Show Stables is based in Mohrsville, Pa., and the horses are trucked up there in May to compete at the top Northeast venues. Danielle stays in Wellington until the school year is over for the kids, and they join Jimmy up north for the remainder of the season. As an equestrian family, traveling is a major part of the lifestyle, but for at least part of the year, the Torano family get to stay home in Wellington. The Winter Equestrian Festival unites the family’s love of horses, with competition for every level at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

ERIC LAMAZE
ERIC LAMAZE Canadian show jumper Eric Lamaze became the most decorated Canadian equestrian athlete when he claimed the individual bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2008, he won both the individual gold and the team silver medals in Beijing. He was ranked the number one show jumper in the world at the end of the 2008 season, as well as in 2010 and 2011. The Quebec native began riding at age 12 and reached the Grand Prix level in 1992 in his mid-20s. EUGENIO GARZA
EUGENIO GARZA Mexican show jumper Eugenio Garza Perez comes from a long line of equestrians. Horses have been in his family for generations. Garza has moved quickly up the ranks since he came to the United States to train six years ago. Now 20, he is currently based at his new barn in Wellington, where he works with trainer Eddie Macken. One key to his success has been his mount Bariano, which he purchased in 2012. The pair jumped to the gold medal at the North American Junior & Young Rider Championships in 2013, before moving on to Grand Prix classes. The pair had a successful 2016. In May, Garza and Bariano bested a field of 41 competitors to claim the top prize at the $130,000 Hollow Creek Farm Grand Prix CSI3* in Kentucky with a blazing jump-off round in 39.160 seconds. In June, he was in Virginia for the Upperville Colt & Horse Show, winning the $216,000 Upperville Jumper Classic FEI CSI 4*, also with Bariano. Getting ready for the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival, Garza took part in the $35,000 Noble Outfitters Holiday & Horses Opener CSI 4* in Wellington, piloting Bariano to third place.

SOPHIE GRACIDA
SOPHIE GRACIDA If show jumper Sophie Gracida’s name sounds familiar, perhaps it’s because she is from Wellington’s well-known Gracida polo family and just recently began to pursue a career in show jumping. In 2016, she competed in Miami at the Class 2-7: Miami Beach 2016 CSI2* 1.15m; Class 2-2: Miami Beach 2016 CSI2* 1.25/1.30m; and Class 2-1: Miami Beach 2016 CSI2* 1.10/1.15m. She also competed internationally in Portugal at the Vilamoura CSI3* and Vilamoura CSIYH1*. Gracida, who turns 27 this month, is often seen with her longtime boyfriend, Olympic show jumper Ben Maher of England. As she looks to become a serious competitor, look for Gracida in the show ring this season at the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival on her horses Didante and Diamant WP Z, as well as Amy Carr’s Sentimiento LS, a horse that is also ridden by Maher. wellington the magazine | february 2017

TOM MACGUINNESS
TOM MACGUINNESS Well-known Irish businessman Tom MacGuinness, founder and owner of Horseware Ireland (www. horseware.com), is an equestrian who has tried his hand at many disciplines. Aside from show jumping, he has competed in eventing, endurance and polo. As a child, he rode ponies and worked at his family’s riding school, eventually taking over teaching and becoming a certified instructor. His experience at horse shows led him to focus on producing a better equestrian blanket, creating what became the first fully waterproof and breathable blanket that didn’t slip or make the horse sweat. Over the past 30 years, that has led to a full line of products for both horses and riders. When not running his international company from his home in Wellington, MacGuinness can often be found competing. He recently came in third place in April at the Trinidad CEI3* 160, an endurance competition. He competed in July, August and September in jumping with mounts Horseware Foxy and Russian Gold in Miami.

Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital Expands Surgical And Diagnostic Offerings In Wellington By Sarah Harper
South Florida horse owners now have a new, innovative veterinary option right around the corner with the enhanced veterinary services offered by Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Wellington. Rood & Riddle, founded in Lexington, Ky., is a world-renowned equine hospital known for highly advanced diagnostics and skilled veterinary experts who provide exceptional treatment for world-class show and race horses. The company recently expanded its veterinary services into Wellington by pur-
chasing an equine hospital and adjacent property on South Shore Blvd. Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital’s primary focus will be to offer referral support to local veterinarians. However, clients also have the opportunity to schedule elective surgeries, a wide range of diagnostic imaging services,
as well as internal medicine, neurology and podiatry consultations. The expertise provided by Rood & Riddle specialists, combined with cutting-edge diagnostic technology, will offer horse owners and veterinarians the ability to provide the highest level of health care for their equine patients. “Rood & Riddle is pleased to expand its local practice and dedicated hospital presence in Florida. The world knows that the Village of Wellington is a major center for sport horse activities in North America,” Rood & Riddle CEO Bill Rood said. “Our mission has always been to provide the best care for our clients and patients wherever they are. The addition of this property allows our practice to better serve our many clients who compete in Florida every year, both in sport-horse activities and racing.” In recent years, Florida has experi(Above and left) Veterinarians at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Wellington perform a procedure at the surgical facility. wellington the magazine | february 2017

enced an unmatched increase in the sport-horse disciplines while continuing to maintain a strong racehorse community. This growth trend solidified Rood & Riddle’s decision to establish a permanent Florida presence. In addition to year-round surgical services, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital also will provide a team of veterinarians offering expertise in areas such as sport horse health care, neurology and podiatry to provide outstanding service for its clients. Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital is working to update and upgrade the facility with a newly expanded surgical center, which includes an additional surgery suite, induction and recovery stall, transfer area, client viewing area and a treatment room. All the amenities of the new facility, including stalls, will be climate-controlled and continuously staffed. The new facility is on target to be completed during the early months of 2017. This renovation will provide an advanced level of diagnos-
tic and surgical options for the South Florida equine community. Veterinarian Dr. Jose Bras will lead the surgical team. Bras, originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, completed his veterinary training at the Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine, followed by an in-hospital internship at Rood & Riddle and then the completion of a surgical residency and master’s degree in biomedical science at Kansas State University. He joined the Rood & Riddle team as an associate in 2015, working in both the ambulatory and surgery departments. “We are excited to debut the new hospital, which shows our commitment to the health, safety and welfare of horses in Florida,” Bras said. “I am looking forward to living in Wellington and becoming a part of the local community.” Veterinarian Dr. Scott Pierce, a shareholder and 30-year veteran of Rood & Riddle, will oversee the Wellington facility, supported by not only Bras but also veterinary surgeon Dr.
Jennifer Jordan, veterinarian Dr. Ashley Embly and his son, Dr. Riley Pierce, also a veterinarian. “We are thrilled to expand our services in Wellington on a year-round basis,” Pierce said. “Working with our global clients competing in Florida ensures our ability to keep their equine athletes at peak condition and is a win-win for everyone.” Clients will also be able to schedule internal medicine and neurology consultations with Dr. Steve Reed, one of the foremost experts on equine neurology in the United States. He has authored or co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications, and in 2008 was chosen to deliver the Frank J. Milne lecture at the annual meeting of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, a singular honor given to a leader in equine veterinary medicine. Scheduled specialty services will also be available from veterinary podiatrists Dr. Scott Morrison and Dr. Raul Bras. Additionally, surgeon Dr. Rolf Embertson will occasionally visit to perform

Winter In Wellington With Old Salem Farm Story by Lindsay Brock • Photos by Jump Media
When snow flies in the Northeast, many show jumping barns begin a pilgrimage south. One of those barns, Old Salem Farm based in North Salem, N.Y., leaves winter behind each year and moves to the ideal training and competition conditions found in Wellington. Led by top trainer Frank Madden and assistant trainer Stella Manship, Old Salem Farm brings riders of varying levels to Wellington each year to compete in the Winter Equestrian Festival and to enjoy a “winter in Wellington.” While sunshine and palm trees are better for riding than a New York winter, and make for ideal working conditions for Madden, Old Salem Farm riders also view Wellington as a land of opportunity. “WEF offers so much, from leadline all the way up to five-star grand prix and everything in between,” Madden said. “I feel that you can get six to nine months’ worth of training for horses and riders in a three-month span of time. When we are done, we come home with much more seasoned horses and riders.” The Old Salem Farm team will be made up of riders competing in a broad

span of divisions, including junior jumpers, equitation, adult jumpers and hunters, and high amateur jumpers, according to Madden. “This year we have some new horseand-rider combinations, and I am most looking forward to seeing how those work out,” said Madden, who also puts his judging expertise to use at WEF during the season. One rider who will be piloting two new mounts, 16-year-old Klee Hellerman, will also be making her first-ever winter trip to the horse haven that is Wellington after having previously competed for the past two years in Ocala. Hailing from New Haven, Conn., Hellerman has been riding at Old Salem Farm for nearly two years and splits her time in the saddle with her responsibilities as a junior at Cheshire Academy in Cheshire, Conn. wellington the magazine | february 2017

Catching a Wednesday afternoon flight each week with her textbooks and assignments in tow, Hellerman has devised a plan to stay on top of her studies while seeking success in the show ring. “It’s all about being organized and having constant contact with your teachers,” she said. While this winter marks her first season in Wellington, Hellerman is looking forward to traveling with her fellow Old Salem Farm riders and trainers. “I love the organization and the community at Old Salem Farm,” she said. “I am excited about having one week of shows right after the other for three months. Both my horses are new, so it is an opportunity to get to know them and start being competitive with them in the equitation and junior jumper divisions.” As Hellerman dips her toes into the Wellington community, Old Salem Farm rider Tegan Treacy, 20, of Needham, Mass., is returning to familiar territory. She joined Old Salem Farm while competing at WEF in 2013 and
Shanghai Foot Spa
has called Wellington her winter home since her early teens as a junior rider. Treacy is a sophomore at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and has “winter in Wellington” down to a science. “I try to be in Wellington for eight or nine weeks during the winter and fly down after my classes on Thursday, and return on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning,” she said. “One year I stayed at school for four weeks straight, and it was actually more difficult to be out of my travel routine. That schedule makes it easier for me to focus on school while I am in Durham and focus on the horses when I am in Wellington.” Treacy is a regular top finisher in high and low amateur-owner jumper competition, but hopes to use the 2017 WEF season to move into the Under 25 ranks. The Hollow Creek Farm Under 25 Grand Prix Series was developed as a bridge to the international level of grand prix competition, allowing up-and-coming riders the opportunity to gain experience competing against

their peers. “There are so many opportunities to show in Wellington,” Treacy said. “The circuit runs for 12 consecutive weeks and is very competitive with large classes, good footing and beautiful show grounds.” At home just one hour north of New York City, Old Salem Farm is the site of its own renowned training program, as well as 26 weeks of horse shows from local and regional events to the highest level of international show jumping competition. But for three months, riders like Hellerman and Treacy, under the tutelage of trainers such as Madden and Manship, make up a small piece of Wellington’s booming horse show community that draws from all corners of North America and beyond during the winter months. “There’s no better environment for competition or training, and we consider ourselves lucky to be able to call Wellington home during the winter,” Madden said. “Myself and my riders love our facilities at Old Salem Farm in
New York, but if you have to escape the weather, Wellington is the place to be.” Old Salem Farm is one of the top equestrian competition venues in North America, as rated by the North American Riders Group. Host of the FEI 2* and 3* Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows, the prestigious American
Gold Cup CSI-W 4* and year-round competitions, the facility offers a stateof-the-art turf grand prix field, indoor riding arena and two all-weather footing rings. For more information about Old Salem Farm, visit www.oldsalemfarm.net or call (914) 669-5610.

Jordan Naftal Brings Years Of Restaurant Expertise To Wellington National Golf Club Story and Photos by Lenore Phillips
Wellington National Golf Club recently announced that well-known Wellington chef and businessman Jordan Naftal has signed on as director of food and beverage services at the club. Naftal, formally of the acclaimed Jordan’s Bistro, has ambitious plans for Wellington National, including dynamic cuisine, plus putting the final touches on the Champions Bistro, which is scheduled to open over the next few months. “I am thrilled and honored to be taking on the food and beverage operations of Wellington National. I am confident that we will do amazing things here,” Naftal said. “The potential for this striking space is limitless, and I am excited about continuing to serve many of our guests we know from past years at Jordan’s.” Naftal made his way to Wellington with his family in 2013, where he opened an upscale steak house, Jordan’s Bistro, known for Florida-grown steaks and unique wines. The Naftals were a consistent presence at the front of their restaurant and developed a warm reputation in the community. After years of working independently, the Naftals decided it was time for a new venture and began exploring their options. “Wellington is a seasonal town, which presents challenges to local businesses. We would go through 8 months of trying to break even, and then winter would come and we would catch up, and then start all over. That was a tortuous cycle,” Naftal explained. “We are passionate about what we do, and I

think we did a great job, yet there just wasn’t enough support. When Doug Marty approached us about partnering with Wellington National, the timing was perfect.”
With the help of his team, including Executive Chef David Guilford and Sous Chef Enrique Noble, Naftal will manage the food and beverage operations at Wellington National, including

Naftal also uses locally sourced, fresh ingredients that contribute to the seasonal flavorings of his cuisine. In addition to the steaks Naftal is known for, the Champions Bistro menu will offer daily lunch specials and seasonal dinner entrées. As director of beverage services, Naftal will review and enhance the wine lists and add his own unique infused liquors. “Among other things, we make our own vanilla and pineapple liquors to make drinks like a Hawaiian martini, which is a delicious cocktail,” he explained. “I also love to make a true Old Fashioned made from scratch.” Wellington National will also offer full-service catering for member and non-member events on site. Elizabeth Fountain Brings Her Clients A Lifelong Passion For Interior Design By Julie Unger
Design has always been a passion for Elizabeth Fountain, owner of Elizabeth Fountain Interiors in West Palm Beach. “I’ve been doing it my entire life. I remember as a little girl, there was a store in the town I grew up in,” Fountain recalled, adding that she would frequent the store with a friend. “We would purchase all of this stuff, we’d come back to our homes, and I would decorate both of our rooms. I’d decorate her bedroom, I’d decorate my bedroom, and in six months’ time, we’d completely redo everything.” Later, in college, Fountain was the go-to decorator for her friends’ apartments. “It never occurred to me to do this for a living,” she said. “In college, I majored in international business.” When her husband suggested she pursue decorating as a business, Foun-
tain wasn’t sure what to do. She had a successful career as a professional speaker focusing on communications that took her around the world. She didn’t have any decorating credentials. However, one day Fountain had someone from a consignment store come to her home to look at some furniture she wanted to sell. “She came over to the house to look at what we had, and she said, ‘Who did your house?’ I said ‘I did.’ She said, ‘Are you a designer?’ and I said ‘No.’ She said, ‘Well you ought to be.’” With so many people telling her the same thing, maybe there was some truth to it, Fountain thought. At the time, Fountain and her husband, a general contractor, had just
moved to Florida. When she visited a friend who had also just moved, she noticed that the friend had barely unpacked. “I went back a month later and ofwellington the magazine | february 2017

fered to decorate,” she said. “They purchased all of the things that I recommended for them to buy. That was really the beginning of me doing this professionally.” That pivotal moment occurred in 2002, and the rest is history. “I quit my speaking career, and I became an interior decorator,” said Fountain, who recently opened a boutique showroom in West Palm Beach. The showroom is open to the public. With more than 3,000 square feet of show space, Elizabeth Fountain Interiors showcases furniture, rugs, carpeting, flooring, artwork, mirrors, accessories, lighting, fabric samples, wallpaper samples, carpet samples and catalogues

from vendors. “We are a full-service interior design firm,” she said. “We do floor planning, we sell furniture — we sell everything you absolutely need for your home.” Fountain prefers to come to clients’ homes to see how they live before creating a design plan. “Design isn’t taste or style,” she said. “You have to take into consideration how the people live — their lifestyle. Are they casual? Are they formal? Are they into animals such that you’re going to have all sorts of dogs and cats and kids running around the house? You have to take all of those things into consideration.” Her firm is able to come in and com-
pletely redo a house. Fountain is respectful of clients’ budgets, and works to stay within the budget and not surprise them in the end with a larger bill than they were expecting. “If I see it can’t be done for the amount of money they want to spend, I tell them that up front,” she said. Working with many different budgets, Fountain’s reputation has been built on more high-end customers, she said. The key to decorating, Fountain explained, is to do what the client wants, because it’s their home. “It’s our job to really get into the personality of the people who live in the home and create their nest based on
that, because that’s where they will feel the most comfortable,” she said. “With my training in communication, I think that has really helped me in being successful in this business — to really listen, not only to what they’re saying, but to listen and look and observe, and then give them what they want.” While Fountain doesn’t have a favorite style, she is often attracted to contemporary, transitional and earthy styles. The best part of her profession, she said, is the creativity. Working with a client, putting together their vision, and then unveiling it, she said, is very fulfilling. Fountain’s advice for those looking for an interior designer to make their dream home into a reality is to find someone you feel comfortable with. “Find somebody who they really click with, who they feel comfortable with, who they feel understands what they’re saying,” she said. “Because we’re in the construction business, I have actually

worked with other designers, and I am appalled by the way they treat their customers… I think respecting your customer is very important.” Located off of Decorator’s Row, which is off of Antique Row in West Palm Beach, the Elizabeth Fountain

Young Equestrian Leah Greenstein Aims For Stardom In The Show Ring By Y.A. Teitelbaum
At first glance, Leah Greenstein is a typical teenager in many ways. She gets up early and goes to school and spends a lot of time on her phone. But the 15-year-old is passionate about horses. And that separates her from many teens. She is one of the up-and-coming riders to watch during the 2017 Winter Equestrian Festival, which is underway at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington. Greenstein, who turns 16 next fall, will be competing in the Children’s Hunter and Children’s Jumper divisions, proving grounds for potential grand prix riders. The ninth-grader begins her day with three hours at the King’s Academy from 8 to 11 a.m., and then returns home for her daily riding routine that begins around noon under the scrutiny of trainer Steven Gregorio of Aster Hill. She is also watched closely by her dogs — Sophia, a 9-year-old Chihuahua that the family rescued, and Gracie, an 11-year-old Saint Bernard. Greenstein’s horses include two jumpers and one hunter for the 2017 season. Branson, an 8-year-old, is her hunter. The jumpers are Lorenzo and Quo, both 9. All three are recent additions to Greenstein’s stable, having been purchased in the first quarter of 2016. “I have a lesson first, then I’ll hack the other two later,” said Greenstein, who frequently rides several of Gregorio’s horses throughout the daily sessions. “I usually ride four horses a day; it depends. It’s six days a week, with Mondays off.” And her dogs are her constant companions, whether it’s in the practice ring or at home. “My dogs are always there, sitting in

the ring, or on the outside of the ring. They follow me everywhere,” Greenstein said. “Quo — he’s so good to the dogs, so nice to them. Lorenzo and Branson chase them.” Greenstein is focused on riding, forgoing other sports. At home, she typically declines offers to play basketball at the hoop in the driveway or throw a football around with her younger brother. Like many equestrians, however, she finds time to support a charity. For Greenstein, it’s Place of Hope, which provides a safe, nurturing environment for foster children while they’re in state custody. “My plan for 2017 is being really competitive in children’s hunters and jumpers,” said Greenstein, who expects to participate in WEF shows almost weekly. And for the first time, she is planning to compete in selected events on the fall indoor circuit at the Capital Challenge in Upper Marlboro, Md., followed by the Pennsylvania National in Harrisburg. She also hopes to qualify for the prestigious National Horse Show in Lexington, Ky. Greenstein has been champion and reserve champion several times and won numerous ribbons in her brief career at major shows in Wellington, Lexington, and Tryon, N.C., on all three of her horses and two of Gregorio’s mounts. That’s a long way from her start at a local summer riding camp when she was 8.
She and Gregorio acknowledge that Greenstein must continue to improve. They have already seen a large leap of progress over the past year. Part of the improvement is from having better horses, but she is also spending more time in the gym. “We’re at a horse show almost every week of the year,” Gregorio said. “She has improved tremendously, and she gets tons of mileage; on top of her three horses, she usually shows mine. More time in the ring has made her better and better and better.” The pair are virtually inseparable and have a special bond and that extends from the barn to their local restaurant choices, including Lutina’s Pizza and PDQ. “When I don’t see him for one day, it’s kind of weird,” Greenstein said. “Even on Mondays, on our day off, we’re at the barn. Obviously, we’re together so much, we usually get along — not like not get along, but kind of older brother, little sister; sometimes dad, sometimes brother.” They share one brain cell, according to her father, Alan. “Steven took her to a whole new level,” he said. “Leah is an extremely outgoing young lady, very talkative, extremely talkative,” said Gregorio, who met Greenstein about five years ago. “She tends to overthink things and be a little bit of an anxious person. But that’s better than being lazy and sitting on the couch.” Greenstein agreed with Gregorio’s assessment. “I’ll be telling her to do something and before I can finish, she picks up a canter,” Gregorio added. “She’s just

anxious, always wanting to get to the next step too soon.” Greenstein is able to observe the world-class riders at WEF and other venues, but doesn’t have a favorite or someone she wants to emulate. Her emphasis is on improving at a slow and steady pace. “I know what I want to show in; I don’t know who I want to be like,” Greenstein said. “I just want to be a good rider, do the junior hunters and some junior jumpers eventually when I’m older.” There’s no doubt that Greenstein loves what she does. Her favorite part of competing in the epicenter of the winter equestrian world is simple. “Being around the horses and meeting many people,” she said. This year’s Wellington Sports series will profile some of the many up-and-coming young athletes across a wide range of sports who call Wellington home.

Shane & Peggy Clarke Share A Mutual Love For
The Real Estate Business Story by Matthew Auerbach • Photo by Abner Pedraza
It takes a lot of hard work to keep a partnership together and thriving over the years. When that partnership is both professional and personal, the achievement is that much more impressive. Such is the case with Shane and Peggy Clarke of Keller Williams Realty. The Clarkes have found success in both their marriage and their work. Shane was born in New Zealand, while Peggy originally hails from Boston. They wound up in Wellington for different reasons: he, for the great golfing; she, for the relaxing lifestyle and beautiful year-round weather. They met while working independently in the real estate business. It didn’t take long to realize that they shared similar views of their profession. “We have the same vision, and work to achieve it with love, respect and a sense of humor,” Peggy explained. “It helps that we know and complement each other’s particular strengths. We can also agree to disagree at times, but we make the tough decisions together. We can’t imagine not working together.” The Clarkes have been serving the community for 26 years. Over that time, they have become experts at handling all areas of the real estate buying and selling process. “We specialize in all facets of real estate sales, including some commercial dealings,” Shane said. “We are certified by the Institute of Luxury Home Marketing and have earned the special acknowledgement of being members of the Million Dollar Guild. We are passionate about this business, and it brings us pleasure to find the perfect homes for our customers.” They have an extensive knowledge of the area and pride themselves on knowing the details of the local real estate market. Their association with Keller Williams allows them to use their know-how to the fullest. “We have associated ourselves with Keller Williams Realty, as they are a high-achieving, progressive company that puts their agents first,” Shane said. “They have implemented models and scripts that direct agents to reach their maximum potential.” While the support from Keller Williams is crucial to their success, the Clarkes know it is their deep involvement in every transaction that keeps them flourishing. “We have always created a personal brand for all of our marketing products, which stand out and get us noticed,” Peggy said. “We will not sell a customer a home that we would not buy for ourselves. This has made us successful, and most of our business has been generated by personal referrals from past customers.” The Clarkes have four children, all of college age or be-
yond. Raising a family was a big reason they chose to settle in Wellington. “We love living in Wellington,” Shane said. “We were drawn to the young families, A-rated schools, organized sports and activities, equestrian events, quality hospitals and fine doctors. Having close proximity to the beaches and many fine restaurants in the surrounding areas is also a big plus.” The Clarkes don’t have a crystal ball when it comes to predicting the future of the real estate market. Still, their instincts lead them to believe that the future is strong for both buyers and sellers. “While mortgage rates remain low, they have risen over the past few months,” Peggy said. “With these changes, we may see sellers being more flexible with their pricing to generate a contract.” Shane also expects more people coming into the market. “We are seeing more first-time buyers than usual,” he said. “Area rent prices are increasing, which is motivating millennials and others to move to purchase.” The Wellington office of Keller Williams Realty is located at 12008 South Shore Blvd. To reach Shane and Peggy Clarke, call (561) 7980888 or (561) 307-1506. Retina Group Ophthalmologist Dr. Kevin T. Kelly Protects Patients’ Vision Story by Deborah Welky • Photo by Abner Pedraza
It wasn’t so long ago when a diagnosis of macular degeneration — a common eye problem in seniors — meant almost certain blindness. “The prognosis was pretty grim unless it was caught really early,” recalled Dr. Kevin T. Kelly, an ophthalmologist partner with the Retina Group of Florida. “We had laser, but most patients don’t even notice that their vision is being affected until it’s near the center of vision.” But by then, it used to be too late. “Once the blood vessel burst, and it bled or scarred, it was over,” Kelly said. Fast forward to 2017, and this fairly common condition can be treated with medication — and the expertise of ophthalmologists trained in retinal care. “You think your vision is lost but, after we dry up the blood vessel, the macula is preserved and the patient is able to see,” Kelly said. Kelly practices at the Wellington office of the Retina Group of Florida, which is located on the campus of Wellington Regional Medical Center. A New Jersey native, Kelly completed his undergraduate studies at Rutgers University, earning degrees in chemical engineering and biology. He continued on to medical school at Rutgers, and completed his medical internship at Staten Island Hospital. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at SUNY-Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. That was followed by a two-year fellowship in retina care at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. “Many fellowships are only six months, but all the ophthalmologists in our practice have completed their residency and done two-year fellowships in retinal surgery,” Kelly explained. Those ophthalmologists include Dr. Darin Goldman and Dr. Eduardo Uchiyama, who work with Kelly at the Wellington office. Kelly sees patients in Wellington four days a week, and can be found at the Stuart location of the Retina Group of Florida on Thursdays. Other offices are located in Boca Raton, Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, West Palm Beach, Hollywood, Plantation and the main office in Fort Lauderdale. Surgeries are done on the retina equipment at Broward Health Imperial Point. The practice continues to grow. This is due largely to an aging population, as well as a growing prevalence of diabetes, which is known to cause vision problems. “I opened my office in 2007, and began working with Retina Group in 2009. We see patients with diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, macular degeneration and uveitis, an inflammation of the eye sometimes associated with auto-
immune diseases,” Kelly said. “We focus exclusively on the retina and even cater to other ophthalmologists when they encounter a tough problem.” In the case of eye emergencies, the Retina Group is available around the clock. “What makes us unique is we’re available 24/7,” Kelly noted. “Someone is taking the call.” The Retina Group gets referrals from across Florida and the nation, especially for those patients who live in Florida only part of the year. “I have one patient who I’ve been working with for 10 years, keeping his macular degeneration in check,” Kelly said. “Since 2007, there are new medications to treat it. Today, rather than being blind, his vision is 20/25. The point is, you still have a chance.” The Wellington office of the Retina Group of Florida is located at 1397 Medical Park Blvd., Suite 240, on the campus of Wellington Regional Medical Center. Try The Spinach Eggs Benedict At Oak Bistro & Wine Bar
Story and Photos by Julie Unger
Oak Bistro & Wine Bar has become known throughout the western communities for its weekend brunch specials, and if you stop by, be sure to order the Spinach Eggs Benedict. Oak’s Spinach Eggs Benedict is special. The fresh brioche bun is the perfect bed, warm and cozy, for fresh-cooked spinach and expertly prepared poached eggs. Over the eggs is a generous serving of homemade hollandaise sauce. The meal is a favorite for owners Lisa and Brian Jacobsen. “It’s special because we only do it Saturday and Sunday, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., as part of our brunch. During season, from Jan. 9 through May 1, we are doing Monday Funday, so that will be brunch on Mondays as well,” Lisa said. “We make everything from scratch.” Homemade, gluten-free home fries, tossed in rosemary, are added to the plate.
“That’s what makes them the best,” she said, noting that the entire dish can be prepared gluten-free as well. Every few months, Oak Bistro changes its menu, Brian noted. The new menu for 2017 features several unique dishes and will be in effect until spring. “And then we’ll change it again, when it will be geared toward lighter flavors. During the wintertime, it’s more hearty,” he said. With each season’s menu change, the artwork on the walls, supplied by the Wellington Art Society, changes as well. One of Brian’s favorite dishes is Oak’s Bacon Burger. wellington the magazine | february 2017

Signature Dish “The bacon burger is a creation I came up with,” he said. “The bacon is actually in the burger. We take a mix of ground beef and ground bacon and make that into patties. The bacon permeates throughout the whole burger. If you’re a true bacon lover, you can always add bacon on the top, you can add cheese, you can add a fried egg. You can really kick the burger up a notch or two. To have the bacon actually cooked in the burger is something that is very unique. Each bite that you’re getting is going to give you a nice bacon flavor.” Another big draw would be the Bacon Wrapped Dates, which debuted on the menu shortly after Oak Bistro
opened just over two years ago. They take dates, stuff them with goat cheese and wrap them in bacon, serving them with a balsamic glaze on the bottom. “Once you take the sweetness of the date, the creaminess of the goat cheese and the smokiness of the bacon, it all combines so well together that it’s absolutely delicious,” Brian said. Few places offer bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys during brunch like Oak Bistro does, even letting diners switch between the two. Brunch is a relaxed atmosphere where diners aren’t rushed. Reservations, however, are suggested. Everything is made fresh to order.
The menu features breakfast tacos, a build-your-own omelet, eggs Benedict, cinnamon French toast, and an egg, meat and cheese sandwich. Cappuccino, espresso, hot tea and coffee, as well as cold brewed coffee from Hollywood Brewing Co., is also offered. “It’s just a good time,” Brian said. Regular menu items are also available during brunch, Lisa added, such as the popular Charcuterie & Cheese Board, the Puff Pastry Tart, Croque Monsieur and Soupe Du Jour. “We’re looking forward to welcoming back our snowbirds and equestrian people,” Brian said. “Many small businesses close on Monday, or have very
