PICTURE A PLACE YOU CALL HOME The Village Of Royal Palm Beach Announces The Winners Of Its First Community Photo Contest BY JOSHUA MANNING

The Royal Palm Beach Village Council recently honored the winners of the village’s first-ever photo contest. The theme of the contest was “Picture a Place You Call Home.” The contest was open for entry from June through October and brought in nearly 100 submissions. “Several years ago, we embarked on a program where we decided to formalize an art in public places policy for the village, and this is an extension of that,” Mayor Fred Pinto said at the Thursday, Dec. 7 meeting of the Royal Palm Beach Village Council. “What we’re looking to do is, over a period of time, create some kind of work where we can show the different pictures of Royal Palm Beach in action. We thought the best way to capture that was to have our citizens participate and take pictures.” Vice Mayor Jan Rodusky announced the following top three winners: Anna Powers with “Spring in Challenger Park”

The winning photo by Anna Powers features a blooming tabebuia tree in Lakeside Challenger Park.

in first place, “July 4th at Commons Park” by Lucy Vasquez placed second, and Brandt Haws took third place with his photo “Challenger Park Sunrise.” The first-place image by photographer Anna Powers features a blossoming tree at Lakeside Challenger Park exploding with yellow flowers, flanked by majestic palm trees. “I pass this yellow tabebuia tree every day when I bring my kids to school,” Powers said. “It always brings me joy when I see it blooming. With never-

ending summer, there are not many things that say ‘spring’ here, but this yellow bloom is one of the signs.” Originally from Poland, Powers has been a Royal Palm Beach resident for decades. “I came here 25 years ago when I met my future husband, a lifelong resident of Royal Palm Beach,” she recalled. “When we were looking for a place to raise our family, we found a house with windows facing the canal next to Lake Challenger, and we fell in love with the view. take thousands of photos of the incredible colors of water, sunsets and gators or other critters.” Powers has enjoyed photography since her school days. “I started to do photography back in art school in 1980s when it was all manual,” she said. “We had to develop our own black-and-white films and prints. I later expanded my toolset to digital cameras and software.” Powers loves living in Royal Palm Beach and is proud that her photo will be used to convey the living beauty of the community. “It is hard to beat the place that lets you hop on a kayak or paddleboard from your own backyard while being within walking distance from parks, Costco, schools and restaurants,” she said. The second-place image by photographer Lucy Vasquez is from the village’s Fourth of July celebration at Royal Palm Beach Commons Park and centers on an exploding red firework over the lake, surrounded by dozens of smaller fireworks. 16 january/february 2024 | royal palm the magazine

“I pass this yellow tabebuia tree every day when I bring my kids to school. It always brings me joy when I see it blooming. — First Place Winner Anna Powers “I love to go to Commons Park,” Vasquez said. “It is just near my house. I go to every event. I love the music and the nature around the park. I always take time to walk around the park.” She is not a professional photographer but enjoys taking pictures. “I love to take pictures to have some memories, but I never share except with my family,” Vasquez said. “I have many pictures in my phone.” However, when she heard about the village’s contest, she looked through her images and chose two pictures to sub-

mit. The one featuring the fireworks was selected as one of the winners. “This one was special because of how it reflects on the water, and I think it is wonderful how you can perceive it,” said Vasquez, who loves how the explosion of the lights interacts with the water in the image. A recent addition to Royal Palm Beach, she moved here last year from Broward County. “I love living here,” Vasquez said. “It is very peaceful, yet everything is very close to your house. I love visiting parks and walking around, and Royal Palm Beach has so many of them.” The third-place image by photographer Brandt Hawes is of a majestic sunrise scene, also at Lakeside Challenger Park, depicting a colorful sunrise reflected beautifully on the surface of the lake. Mario Lopez Pisani, the village’s public arts professional, was one of several judges to score the different photographic entries on four criteria: response to the theme (“Picture a Place You Call Home”), creativity, appropriateness for display and composition/technical quality. “It was surprising how good the pictures were and how many we received,” Lopez Pisani said. “We didn’t know what to expect. It was fun and exciting to see the village from the eyes of the residents. It was very endearing seeing these different perspectives.” The plan is to exhibit the winning photos at Royal Palm Beach Village Hall in the near future and to repeat the contest each year. The winners also received gift cards and recognition on the village’s web site and social media pages. “This was a starting point, but more such contests are planned in the future,” Lopez Pisani said. “The hope is to continue doing more of these art outreach programs.” Learn more about the contest at www. royalpalmbeachfl.gov/photocontest.

SERVING THE EYECARE NEEDS OF PATIENTS Highly Skilled Ophthalmologists And The Latest In Technological Advances At Florida Eye For nearly 50 years, the Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute has been taking care of the eyecare needs of local residents. In that time, the practice has grown to include a medical staff of highly skilled ophthalmologists at offices in Wellington, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and west Boynton Beach. The practice was first established by Dr. Jonathan Chua in 1975. It was purchased by Dr. Randy Katz and Dr. Lee Friedman in 2004. Under the direction of Katz and Friedman, Florida Eye’s mission has remained the same — to provide outstanding vision care to residents of South Florida. The addition of Dr. Barry Schechter as the institute’s third partner made it possible for the practice to reach out to even more patients, offering a more comprehensive range of eyecare solutions. The practice has multiplied in more recent years, adding another full-time ophthalmologist in 2016, Dr. Jonathan Criss, followed by Dr. Megan Rowlands, Dr. Steven Naids, Dr. Jonathan Lam, and an optometrist, Dr. James Walsh, in 2021. The practice is managed by Jason Feuer, an experienced administrator

with more than 27 years of ophthalmology experience. Several years ago, Florida Eye partnered with EyeSouth Partners, an eyecare management organization, to ensure high-quality administrative support, clinical quality, and long-term stability and growth of the practice. When patients come to Florida Eye, they become a part of a practice that treats patients like family. Through exams and corrective procedures, patient education and continued contact, Florida Eye keeps patients healthy, informed and seeing the world more clearly. At Florida Eye, patients receive treatment for a wide array of eyecare needs, such as diabetic eye exams, diagnosis and treatment of macular degeneration

and other eye diseases, emergency eyecare, treatment of eye trauma and infection, retinal eye exams and laser treatment, glaucoma exams and treatment, LASIK and refractive surgery, cataract and lens implant surgery, corneal transplants and glaucoma surgery. “At Florida Eye in Wellington, we are board-certified, fellowship-trained surgeons,” Dr. Steven Naids said. “We practice the most minimally invasive and cutting-edge technology to make the cataract surgery experience seamless. Many of our patients choose to have laser-assisted cataract surgery. Recently, we became one of the few practices in the country to offer the most advanced laser, the Ally femtosecond laser, to our patients.” royal palm the magazine | january/february 2024 19

Florida Eye’s Dr. Steven Naids and Dr. Megan Rowlands.

This is just one of the treatments available for debilitating vision conditions, such as cataracts and glaucoma. “Along with femtosecond laser technology, we also offer lifestyle-friendly advanced technology intraocular lens implants at the time of cataract surgery. This can provide an extended range of vision and freedom from glasses for the right patients,” Naids said. “Here at Florida Eye, we understand that glaucoma is a lifelong disease and treatment is not a one-size-fits-all approach. As such, we offer the full array of treatments for glaucoma of all severities, including lasers in the clinic and operating room, a variety of minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries, as well as traditional glaucoma surgeries, like trabeculectomies and tube shunts for more refractory cases.” The doctors and staff at Florida Eye stay up to date with the latest advancements in eyecare. “Our doctors are members of major societies and are thought leaders in the field of ophthalmology,” Naids said. “We publish original research, and our 20 january/february 2024 | royal palm the magazine

doctors have received best paper honors at international meetings.” The practice takes a patient-centric approach to eyecare. “We empower patients to make the right choices for themselves by involving them in the decision-making process,” Naids said. “Vision is such a vitally important part of our lives. Cataract surgery can improve your quality of life overnight. With a combination of state-of-theart technology and compassionate care, we can achieve an outstanding visual result.” Florida Eye also prides itself on technological innovation to enhance the quality of patient care. “Integrating technology into our patient care helps us optimize our patients’ surgical outcomes and improve our patients’ surgical experiences overall,” Dr. Megan Rowlands explained. “Our Ally femtosecond laser system during cataract surgery, for example, not only allows us to achieve greater precision for astigmatism correction by incorporating iris registration, but also minimizes the amount of energy and time required to remove the cataract. This confers a smoother surgical experience and faster healing time for our patients.” The practice works closely with other medical professionals to support the needs of patients. This collaborative effort involves open communication, shared insights and coordinated efforts to address various aspects of a patient’s health that may impact their eyecare. This process also includes a multi-faceted approach to patient education. Curated patient literature offers detailed insights into various eye conditions, treatment

options and preventive measures, complemented by informative videos that break down complex concepts into easily understandable visuals. Florida Eye’s commitment to personalized care is exemplified through one-on-one consultations between doctors and patients, fostering a collaborative environment where questions are answered and individualized plans are crafted to ensure optimal eye health. In addition, patients have access to a wealth of information available at www.fleyedocs.com covering a range of eye health topics. Meanwhile, the staff actively engages with the community through informative lectures, providing an opportunity for in-depth discussions on various eye health matters. The practice also takes part in a variety of clinical trials that may be available to patients that qualify. This research serves as the cornerstone of continuous improvement in patient eyecare. This commitment helps Florida Eye stay at the forefront of ophthalmological advancements and extends to active involvement in research and academic pursuits, which includes publishing original research that contributes to the evolving landscape of eyecare. The doctors at Florida Eye have not only engaged in groundbreaking research but have also been honored with recognition at international meetings, helping to shape the future of ophthalmology on a global scale. The Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute accepts more than 600 insurance plans, in addition to Medicare. Patients with financial concerns can call the office at (561) 737-5500 to inquire about insurance issues and payment plans, such as the CareCredit card and the Alphaeon credit card. The Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute is located at 2575 S. State Road 7 in Wellington. For more information, call (561) 792-1205 or visit www.fleyedocs.com.

AN ELEVATED ITALIAN DINING EXPERIENCE

STORY AND PHOTOS BY MELANIE KOPACZ

Bella Cucina restaurant exudes an essence all its own with a dining experience that will serenade your senses with impeccable Italian dishes, rich in flavor and artistry.

(Top) Insalata con Gamberi is a succulent shrimp salad with arugula, hearts of palm, cherry tomatoes, onions, pecans and goat cheese. (Middle) For dessert, try the Tiramisu made with imported mascarpone and sponge cake, soaked in espresso, topped with cocoa, or the Bella Coconut Obleas, dessert wafers filled with dulce de leche and coconut flakes. (Bottom) The Carpaccio di Manzo con Rucola features shaved beef tenderloin, arugula, cherry tomatoes and parmesan.

The Bella Cucina team includes (L-R) Cathy Tejeda, Gladys Suarez, Edgar Perez, J.C. Garcia and Camilo Porras.

The new Italian restaurant Bella Cucina is an elevated experience that brings an exciting new dining addition to the Royal Palm Beach community. The reimagined space opened in October in the Village Royale plaza at the northwest corner of Royal Palm Beach and Okeechobee boulevards. Facing Royal Palm Beach Blvd., the space was formerly home to Mario Bros. Italian Restaurant. Bella Cucina lives up to its name, meaning “beautiful kitchen,” as each plate of northern-style Italian cuisine is exquisitely crafted and prepared to delight. “If you see something with your eyes, you’re going to like it. Everything comes from the eyes. Sometimes not by how much — it’s all about the quality,” chef and owner Edgar Perez said. Quality, like the Linguine Frutti di Mare, a dish filled with favorites from the sea. Succulent shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops and calamari are served with linguine in a white wine sauce. Another delicacy is the Vitello alla Milanese, thinly breaded veal topped with arugula, tomato, shaved parmigiano and roasted potatoes. “I always wanted to open a restaurant with Italian cuisine, because we love that food,” Perez said. “A restaurant with a nice menu, good quality food and service.” His career has taken him on a 25year culinary journey starting at age 14 when he arrived in the United States from Guatemala. He has since entrenched himself in every aspect of the business at several large restaurant franchises, to eventually opening up three of his own Sabor Latino restaurants throughout Palm Beach County. In 2016, he met his wife, Gladys Suarez, shortly after she arrived from Venezuela. While working together, they realized they had much in common. “We have almost the same taste in food, and we created many of the dishes together,” he said.

The two are now embarking on this newest culinary collaboration together, and each dish and guest is given special attention. “We’re happy. She loves what she’s doing. She loves customer service. We strive to make guests happy with excellence in service,” Perez said. From the thoughtful preparation to the moment the meal is plated, vibrant accents accompany the dish with flowers and fruit. One of those masterpieces is Costata di Manzo, a grilled prime rib sizzling in flavor over a bed of lobster mashed potatoes. Alongside is an artistic take on a salad, with a stuffed tomato that has been boiled, peeled and filled with arugula, onions and dressing, like an edible treasure chest. Branzino alla Griglia also is popular. The grilled Mediterranean striped bass is topped with a lemon butter sauce and sautéed vegetables over mashed potatoes. Smaller plates include grilled octopus with sautéed arugula, cherry tomatoes and onions, topped with chimichurri. This crispy calamari is served with both marinara and a spicy sauce. Other traditional favorites include savory lasagna, lobster ravioli, and chicken prepared several ways, such as Francese, Parmigiana and Marsala. A special menu for children offers Spaghetti Bolognese, Fettuccine Alfredo and more. Lunchtime is a great way to try the soups, sandwiches and pizza, Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pizzas can also be created to taste, with many toppings to choose from. “Our house pizza has fresh mozzarella with arugula, tomatoes, prosciutto and shaved parmesan,” Perez said. “We can add grilled chicken on top, too.” The bright and cozy dining room seats 50 with a quaint elegance as jazz plays in the background. White quartz tabletops, contrasting black chairs and lounge-style couches are topped with gold accent pillows. royal palm the magazine | january/february 2024 25

(Top row) The Pollo Francese features tender chicken breaded with egg and flour, pan seared with linguine and a lemon caper sauce; a variety of wines and champagne bottles fill the back wall; and the Veal Chop features a demi-glace sauce, mashed potatoes, sauteed vegetables and a vibrant flower to top it off. (Middle row) Linguine Frutti di Mare features shrimp, clams, mussels, scallops and calamari over a bed of linguine with a white wine sauce; traditional coffee drinks from cappuccinos to lattes and espressos are all served with a biscotti; the Costata di Manzo is grilled prime rib served over lobster mashed potatoes with a salad inside a cooked and peeled tomato; Branzino alla Griglia is a grilled Mediterranean striped bass with a lemon butter sauce, served with aromatic herb oil sautéed vegetables and mashed potatoes, accented with a vibrant flower; and the Vitello alla Milanese features thinly breaded veal topped with arugula, tomato, shaved parmigiano and roasted potatoes. (Bottom row) The Bella Pineapple Cocktail is made with coconut wine, sweet wine, dark wine and pineapple juice with a splash of grenadine served in an ice-cold brass pineapple; the house lasagna is served in a classic Bolognese sauce; the Flight of Limoncello features four unique samples of the after-dinner lemon liqueur; and the Limoncello Mascarpone Cake is a sponge cake dipped in lemon liqueur, layered with imported mascarpone.

Cocktails are specially crafted with bright colors and elegant dried fruit. Tinto de Verano is a popular red wine with lime juice, Sprite and dried lemon to garnish. The Bella Pineapple Cocktail is a hit, made with coconut wine, sweet and dark wine, along with pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine, served in an ice-cold brass pineapple cocktail mug. Limoncello liqueur is a great way to finish dinner. It also comes in a flight. “The limoncello flight is my favorite,” Suarez said. “It’s a combination of two limoncello with two cream limoncello. A sampler, so if you don’t want to drink too much.” For dessert, try the Limoncello Mascarpone Cake, a sponge cake dipped in lemon liqueur and layered with imported mascarpone. The Tiramisu

also is layered with mascarpone after the sponge cake is soaked in espresso then sprinkled with cocoa. Traditional coffees complete the experience, from a tasty espresso to a frothy cappuccino or latte, complete with biscotti. “We welcome all for a great, delicious meal in a comfortable setting, and surprise you with nice food,” Perez explained. The restaurant is open Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Bella Cucina is located at 1193 Royal Palm Beach Blvd. in the Village Royale plaza. RPB To Dedicate New Village Hall At Feb. 29 Ceremony The Village of Royal Palm Beach will hold a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony for the new Royal Palm Beach Village Hall on Thursday, Feb. 29. The community is invited to attend and join the village as it recognizes the residents of Royal Palm Beach for their support and shared aspirations. According to village officials, the new building stands as a testament to the strength of the village’s unity of purpose and symbolizes the enduring excellence of the vibrant community. Instead of continuing to renovate and expand a building nearing 50 years old, the village decided three years ago to build a brand-new Royal Palm Beach

Village Hall to serve the community for the next 50 years. Village employees have been working out of the new building since August, but until recently, the finishing touches were still being done. Now, the new 25,000-squarefoot, two-story building is ready for its big celebration. In the new building, access to village departments surround a large open space, with offices and meeting rooms

for staff on the second floor. The building is also constructed to the latest hurricane standards and will serve as Royal Palm Beach’s Emergency Operations Center during a storm event. Aside from the Feb. 29 celebration, other opportunities to view the new village hall building include attending one of the Royal Palm Beach Village Council meetings held on the third Thursday of each month.
