Wellington Council Fires Its Attorney

Despite mounting lawsuits against the community, a divided Wellington Village Council voted last month to part ways with longtime Village Attorney Jeff Kurtz. In a move that Vice Mayor Howard Coates decried as “outright reckless,” council members voted 3-2 to direct staff to give a 30-day notice of termination of the contract with Glen J. Torcivia & Associates, Kurtz’s law firm. Coates dissented on the vote along with Councilwoman Anne Gerwig. Councilman Matt Willhite asked that the matter be put on the agenda. “I think it has come to the point where good parties can decide that not everything is working out,” he said. But Gerwig said she was concerned in light of the many lawsuits Wellington is facing. “There is a lot of liability here,” she said. “If you want to pick another law firm, then continue with that plan, but don’t put us in danger of being without legal counsel.” Coates, an attorney himself, agreed. “To have an existing attorney fired without a Plan B in effect is reckless,” he said. “It puts us in a vulnerable position.” Councilman John Greene said he thought Wellington must come up with a new solution, especially in light of the money being spent on litigation costs that could be saved with an in-house legal department. “I think it’s a smart investment, when you look at the money we’re spending on litigation,” he said.

Charter School Approval — Council members unanimously gave final approval in November to the Wellington Charter School, set to open next fall on State Road 7 south of Stribling Way. They unanimously approved a development order amendment to change the site from 79,480 square feet of retail furniture sales space to allow for the 1,200-student private school for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. The applicant must return for conditional use approval for a 15,000-square-foot daycare center.

The school is expected to be run by Charter Schools USA. Councilman Matt Willhite said that the intention was to make sure that traffic concerns were eased. “We are greatly concerned with traffic backing up,” he said. Schmidt said that the developers had been conscientious about traffic in designing the traffic patterns on site. “We added a third lane where we can stack more cars,” he said. Food Truck Invasion — A new community event popped up last month when more than 15 gourmet food trucks descended upon the Wellington Amphitheater for the Food Truck Invasion. Held each Thursday from 5 to 9:30 p.m., the event will continue each week through the spring. Food trucks are a new trend in gourmet dining made popular by television shows such as The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network. “Food trucks have been around for many years in California,” organizer Steve Simon said. “A chef might not have the money to open a restaurant, but enjoys putting different concoctions together.” Though the food is easily eaten on the go, it’s a far cry from simple event food. “It’s not just hot dogs and hamburgers,” Simon said. “And if it is something like a hot dog, there’s always add-ons that make it gourmet. We have a guy who makes Colombian hot dogs, and he adds toppings like cheeses, chips and more.” Guests will be able to enjoy their food on the lawn of the Wellington Amphitheater. “They’ll be in the parking lot next to the amphitheater,” Cultural Programs & Facilities Manager Joe Piconcelli said. “We’ll have a DJ, and then once a month, there will be live entertainment.” Though many of the trucks take credit cards, Simon suggested bringing cash just in case.

The Wellington Holiday Parade on Sunday, Dec. 9 will feature a special tribute to the equestrian community with members of the U.S. Olympic team as honored participants. It will also herald the opening of another season of equestrian competition. Members of the 2012 Olympic team will serve as grand marshals of the parade. “There will be more horses than ever in the parade,” said Mary Lou Bedford, coordinator of the parade for the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce. “We’re going to do a special proclamation to announce the opening of the equestrian season. We’ve never really done that. It will be Wellington’s way of welcoming all the equestrians. We’re trying to get each of the different disciplines to have horses in the parade this year.” For the first time, the parade will also be coordinated with Wellington’s holiday tree lighting that evening at dusk, as well as Wellington’s Winter Wonderland holiday event, which will take place Saturday, Dec. 8, the day before the

parade. “We’re trying to create something like a Currier & Ives winter wonderland,” Bedford said. From 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Wellington will feature a real ice skating rink open to the public at the Wellington Amphitheater at 12100 W. Forest Hill Blvd., renamed Holiday Park for the festivities, followed by professional skaters at 7:30 p.m. with a cast of 25 performers, including singers, dancers, cartoon characters and dancing polar bears in a performance set to holiday music. The finale features the chipmunks singing and dancing a tribute to the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes, and ends with a musical performance by Santa Claus himself. The parade will be a partnership between Wellington and the chamber. “They do a tremendous behind-the-scenes job,” Bedford said. “The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is going to be out in full force, not only protecting us, closing the streets and everything, they are going to be part of the parade as usual, too.” The Wellington Landings Middle School majorettes perform during last year’s holiday parade.

The parade will begin at 1 p.m., preceded by the Holiday Mile Run at 12:45 p.m. Runners will begin at Holiday Park and take the parade route on Forest Hill Blvd. to St. David’s-in-the-Pines Episcopal Church at Wellington Trace and return to Holiday Park, which will offer more ice skating in addition to other activities both before and after the parade. “Wellington is being kind enough to let us have the rink for the next day in the Holiday Park,” Bedford said. In addition to skating, there will be bounce houses and possibly a carousel, as well as music by local choral groups before and after the parade, and some signature tribute bands. The crescendo of the day is going to be the tree lighting that evening. “The tree lighting will happen somewhere between 5:30 and 6 p.m., and that way the lights will be nice and bright,” Bedford said. “We’ll have some words by the mayor, and he will probably be the one who will light the tree.” Now that the chamber’s territory is larger because of the merger of the Palms West and Greater Lake Worth chambers of commerce, more municipalities and high school bands

will participate in the parade. “We’re going to have the mayors from Lake Worth and Palm Springs participate, and we’re going to have the Lake Worth band in it for the first time,” Bedford said. Eight or nine high school bands are anticipated. “Last year’s parade had 121 entries, and we’re probably going to have about 125 entries this year,” she said. One thing has not changed. As always, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be the grand finale of the parade. Forest Hill Blvd. will be closed at 12:30 p.m. The staging area will be at Wellington Trace and Forest Hill Blvd., at the original Wellington Mall and the Wellington Plaza. The parade dispersement area will be along Chancellor Blvd. The presenting sponsors are Schumacher Automotive and the Wellington Preservation Coalition. Though Wellington activist Barbara Phillippi has given the less fortunate in the community a reason to smile for years through her volunteer work, she had always been insecure about her own smile. Now, thanks to the help of Dr. Farokh Jiveh and the staff at Smiles By Jiveh, Phillippi is showing off her new, beautiful smile as the winner of Jiveh’s Holiday Smile Giveaway. “I’m ecstatic,” Phillippi said of the experience. “People tell me, ‘I love your smile.’ I’ve never had anyone say that to me before.” Jiveh launched the Holiday Smile Giveaway almost a decade ago when a patient brought in a letter highlighting someone in need of dental work. “What struck us about the person was the amount of unselfish work she does in the community,” he said. “So we started the Holiday Smile Giveaway as a way to give something back through our profession.” Jiveh hopes that he can serve as an inspiration to other professionals to do their part in giving back. “It has always been my vision and belief that no matter what one does as a profession, it is a service,” he said. “It is a service to the people they encounter, to the public and to the community they live in. Dentistry is not just about teeth, smiles and what a nice office and equipment we have.”

“The response was overwhelming,” Jiveh said. “We met so many amazing people and are truly honored to be able to provide such a service. So many people qualified for their selfless giving and service to the community.” This time around, nominations were taken on the Smiles By Jiveh Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ SmilesByJiveh. “We were very specific about what and who we were looking for,” Jiveh said. “We wanted to pick someone who is a volunteer in the community and has given back, in terms of service, to where they live. We were initially going to pick one person, but could not help doing three.”

We truly wish we could pick them all, but it’s impossible.” Phillippi was nominated by her daughter, who recognized her mother’s selfless volunteerism through the organization Toys for Tots and the Village of Wellington.

After reading through the many deserving candidates, Jiveh said that Phillippi stood out.

“At Wellington, I volunteer in the lobby,” Phillippi said. “I used to hold my hand over my mouth when I spoke to people so that they wouldn’t look at my teeth. I didn’t realize what a big deal it was. Because I am older, and I never had the money to get it done, I just never thought it would happen.”

said. “There were times that she had to step away from her volunteer job to come to us for a procedure and go back the same day.” Giving Phillippi a brand-new smile was a long process, which included rehabilitation of her bite and total reconstruction of her smile. “Once we picked her, we realized that this was a complete reconstruction,” Jiveh said. “We had to reconstruct her smile and functionality, and help her gain back what she had lost over the years.”

“At the end of the first visit, she was a completely different person,” Jiveh said. “She had a new smile, new teeth and a new life. The transformation was so amazing at that very first visit that it completely changed her looks for the better. No other cosmetic procedure is as dramatic as an immediate new smile, and Barbara got that the first visit.”

Statewide AYSO Soccer Tournament Returns To Wellington January 18-21 Next month, Wellington will once again be host to more than 100 soccer teams from across the state as they battle in the American Youth Soccer Organization Section 14 Games. The tournament, set for Jan. 18-21, is one of the largest annual soccer competitions in the state. Held at Village Park on Pierson Road, the tournament will bring players together as they vie for the state championship title. “This is, I believe, the seventh year it’s been held in Wellington,” Tournament Director Paul Scala said. “It has been in Wellington for a while now because the facilities are excellent and it’s centrally located. We have teams that come from Key West to Flagler Beach, and Wellington is a great location for them to meet in the middle.” Florida is part of Section 14, which also includes Georgia and South Carolina. However, neither state is expected to field a team, making the tournament truly the Florida state tournament. At the tournament, the organization pits its best players from across the state

against each other on all-star teams, Scala said.

Wellington because of the facilities and partnership with the village.

“AYSO is primarily a recreational soccer league,” he explained. “Players in this tournament are selected from their rec programs to make all-star teams. It has begun to branch out a bit into more competitive play within the regions themselves as well.”

“We love it,” he said. “Wellington is very helpful and makes it very easy to hold our tournament there. In 2010, we even hosted the national tournament at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. We have had really great experiences hosting our tournaments in the area.”

The popularity of the sport and of the tournament has bolstered AYSO recreational programs, of which there are 20 across the state, he said. The nearest group to Wellington plays at Okeeheelee Park, though Wellington itself has an Under 19 Boys team. “They have about 1,600 kids playing at Okeeheelee,” Scala said. “Boynton Beach has a similar number. Down in Weston, they have more than 2,000 kids. Of course, there are other regions with a couple of hundred players.” The tournament is expected to bring between 1,200 and 1,500 players to Wellington. Scala said the organization consistently chooses to host its state games in

Some of them have been playing soccer for quite a while. Many of them play from when they are 8 or 9 until they age out at age 18.” The age divisions are: Under 10, Under 12, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 19. There are both boys and girls teams. Winners of the tournament in each age division are able to go on to represent the area in other AYSO events.

“Some teams will progress,” Scala said. “Others will only play in this tournament. It really depends on the region.” The tournament is set in a pool-style play, with each team guaranteed at least three games in its pool. The top teams from each pool will advance to the “medal round” on Sunday and early Monday. First- and second-place players take home a trophy. AYSO also will host games for its VIP players — those who have special needs. The games are played for fun and are educational. The players are often escorted by “buddies,” who guide them on the field and help them to be successful. “Many of our regions have programs for special needs players,” Scala explained. “That weekend, our VIP players will also come in and play. A lot of our players participate in that as volunteers, assisting the kids as they learn how to play soccer. It’s a really great program. It’s very supportive and is an opportunity for them to show off what they have learned over the year.” The weekend tournament will see hundreds of soccer games, and the public is invited to watch. More than 100 soccer teams from across the state are slated to attend the January tournament in Wellington.

Rider Christopher Payne And Trainer David Belford Bring ‘New Hope’ To Wellington By Kendall Bierer

Standing on the sidelines of the Gene R. Mische Hunter Arena at the Winter Equestrian Festival, applause resounds. Christopher Payne exits the ring after completing a beautiful round, and a smile is plastered across his face as he dismounts. The team from New Hope LLC emerges from around the corner and greets him at the in gate with trainer and partner David Belford leading the way. Payne and Belford have worked diligently to create an inspiring program at New Hope, based in Cincinnati, and although they have leased a stunning property in

Wellington for the past seven years, the pair recently purchased a residence, and will soon enough call Wellington their winter home. “I think the accessibility of Wellington was such a pull for us to make the jump and buy a residence,” Belford explained. “We live here from January until the end of April, and within the lifestyle of horse showing, it becomes tedious to constantly live out of one hotel after another. I think having a strong home environment when you are showing is so important. Even our house in Ohio feels like a vacation home — we are never there. We are

really looking forward to having a place we can call home. It is exciting for us.” It was 2001 when Belford was first introduced to Payne, a talented professional rider. At the time, Belford was working for the Jacobs family, and a position opened for a rider. In no time, it was apparent that Payne and Belford were the perfect pair for the task of trainers, and the idea of New Hope was born. Their love for developing young horses and untapped talent has driven the team at New Hope to consistently take top honors at some of the nation’s most prestigious horse shows.

“I think we spend a lot of time developing young horses, and it is not very often that we go out and buy already made horses,” Payne said. “In the past couple of years, we have had a lot of proven success with horses we have imported and developed from their green years. Even for our clients, we find horses that are compatible for them, and I think it is a great thing, because it allows them to buy quality without having to necessarily buy a proven winner.” Most recently, New Hope completed a successful Indoor Finals campaign. The team stepped up for the challenging and prestigious finals, rising to the occasion and claiming numerous championship honors. They will bring an estimated 30

horses to the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival, and they are looking forward to standing ringside as they support their clients through every step of the demanding show series.

Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute Welcomes Specialist Dr. Justin Kearse Dr. Justin Kearse joined the Wellington office of the Palm Beach Orthopaedic Institute in September after completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Florida-Jacksonville and at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. He also completed a hand surgery fellowship through the University of Miami at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Kearse grew up in West Palm Beach and graduated from the King’s Academy, later earning an undergraduate degree with honors in microbiology and a medical degree from the University of Florida. He said he is thrilled to have returned to practice in his hometown. PBOI’s newest specialist trained in general orthopaedics and the subspecialty of hand, wrist and elbow treatment. Kearse takes a special interest in restoring the function of patients who have hand and other upper extremity problems. “My goal as a hand surgeon is for my patients to carry on with their normal life and normal activities without having to even think about their hands or wonder if they will have pain or be unable to do certain activities because problems with their hands limit them,” Kearse said. A candidate member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Kearse has published research in the Journal of Geriatric Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation and had a poster presentation at the Florida Orthopaedic Society. Kearse has

Kearse said that many patients who begin noticing discomfort in a hand, wrist, finger or other arm joint often assume, if they suffered no obvious injury, that they must have arthritis. “Although this is often a cause of hand pain without any particular injury, there are many other potential causes,” he said. “Our hands are complex machines made up of numerous parts that need to work in unison for a fully functioning, pain-free hand. When just one of the many moving parts is altered, we can definitely feel the difference and oftentimes have pain. A hand surgeon, with a complete medical evaluation, is often able to pinpoint what is causing your problem.”

Coldwell Banker real estate agents Ronen and Linda Tish are both New York natives. Ronen hails from Long Island, while Linda was born in Brooklyn. However, Linda’s family moved to Israel, and she grew up there. It turns out the couple shared a common bond — one of Ronen’s friends is Linda’s cousin. When the friend got married, both Ronen and Linda were in attendance. The rest, as they say, is history. Linda moved back to New York in 2000 and, once married, she and Ronen bought a single-family home, which they converted into three rental apartments. The couple lived in one while completing the other two. Hands-on work doesn’t appeal to everyone, but Ronen was hooked. Buying, refurbishing and selling properties appealed to him from the outset. Yet a more traditional career beckoned. “I joined the Xerox Agency (franchise) program in 2001 in New York and, in 2004, was transferred to another agency in Florida. We moved to Royal Palm Beach right before the hurricanes,” Ronen recalled. “At Xerox, I quickly became a product specialist and then the sales manager.”

Today, the couple has a new goal — to own their own real estate company. “It’s a lot more than just being an owner,” Ronen explained. “It’s being able to help other agents become successful — in negotiating contracts, staging homes for sale, listing properties to their best advantage. It’s helping homeowners get their houses sold and keeping buyers from overpaying for a property.” Ronen has used his negotiating skills to help friends buy over 100 properties between New York and Charlotte, N.C. “I help them and they help me,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot by working with them. And I have to give credit to Xerox, of course, for the excellent training. But his heart remained in real estate. “Xerox provided me with a lot of negotiating training,” he said. “That has helped me hugely in real estate transactions. I have become a specialist in the investment property market — buying, selling and renting investment properties.” Linda earned her real estate license in 2007 primarily to support Ronen’s investments, but she was soon so busy that she was working full time. She later joined Coldwell Banker and Ronen left Xerox to earn his license and transition to real estate full time. “I was buying and selling, doing flips, until the market crashed in 2008,” Ronan said. “Then I started buying them and turning them into rental properties. But by then, Linda was so busy that I got my real estate license to be able to help her.” In the meantime, Linda has become an expert in short sales. “I get to know contacts through the bank,” she said. “I know what to ask, how to move things along, what to prepare for the banks ahead of time and how to be the middle person between two banking institutions.” |wellington the magazine| December 2012

‘Back To Basics’ Provides Sneakers, Socks & Underwear To Kids In Need Story by Matthew Auerbach Photos by Abner Pedraza

or 28 years, Beverly Perham has made it her mission to provide thousands of disadvantaged children in Palm Beach County with sneakers, socks and underwear through her organization, Back To Basics. It is her belief that these necessities are the bedrock that allows kids to feel good about themselves, which in turn will enable them to become good students. Through her work, thousands of youngsters will get holiday gifts this year, and for this reason, Perham is the December nominee for Wellington The Magazine’s Woman of the Year Award. Perham was born in Bristol, Conn., in 1938, during a hurricane. Her mother couldn’t make it to the hospital, so the family doctor came to their home to deliver the baby. The power was out, so the entire procedure was done by candlelight. After the successful birth, the doctor turned to the brand-new parents and told them, somewhat jokingly, that their baby was destined to be trouble from the moment she entered the world. It was not a sudden epiphany but a lifelong understanding that transformed Perham into a woman dedicated to helping the neediest among us.

“I was brought up in a poor family,” Perham said. “But I was also brought up to help. My family had a deep feeling to help our neighbors and the community. Later in life, a priest friend said to me: ‘The world promises the poor everything, but gives them nothing.’ I wanted to make sure I was on the right side of that comment.” Perham graduated from Manchester Community College in Manchester, Conn., with an associate’s degree in science and occupational therapy. At age 21, she married her husband, Don, who remains her biggest supporter. It was Don, her Back To Basics partner until his failing eyesight forced him to retire from the job, who prompted their move to Palm Beach County in 1976. “Don couldn’t wait to move to Florida,” Perham said. “I was fine living in Connecticut. I don’t like the heat.” It was the needs of another family member that brought them to Wellington in 1990. “Our adopted son, Jeffrey, who is physically disabled, was one of the original six students to attend the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center,” Perham said. “He loved it there and was doing well, so we thought we’d move to the

village to make life easier on everyone.” Jeffrey, now 40, is one of the Perhams’ three children. Son Todd was adopted as well; Scott, the couple’s only conceived offspring, died at age 10 of cystic fibrosis. These familial situations surely have contributed to Perham’s desire to help those in need, but it’s more basic than that. “There’s a job to do,” she said. “I see a need, and I get it done. Everyone should care.” A simple phone call in 1984 started things rolling. “I got a call from a friend, the president of a women’s club,” Perham said. “She told me 50 kids from Haiti had just landed here with absolutely nothing. I asked her what items were of the most desperate need, and she said, ‘Everything.’ I took $500 of my own money and spent it all on underwear, socks and sneakers. That’s really how Back To Basics was born.” The next year, the number of children served jumped from 30 to 165, and in 1986, Perham began contacting elementary schools. Her goal was to help everyone she could: low-income or impoverished families, single mothers, you name it. |wellington the magazine| December 2012

wellington woman “One principal told me sneakers were a priority, because if a student doesn’t have a pair of sneakers, they can’t participate in physical education class,” Perham said. “That just reinforced my belief that if children have shoes and socks on their feet and underwear on their bodies, they’ve got a head start on a positive school experience.” Over the years, Perham has made a habit of visiting various religious congregations to drum up support for her efforts. She’s compiled quite a substantial contact list made up of churches and various organizations. The process of involvement is simple.

All this takes place in time for Christmas. Socks, sneakers and underwear are not all Perham provides. When summer rolls around, she gets in touch with schools to find out which students can’t afford uniforms. This is where her most famous supporter comes in. “Tennis star Andy Roddick has been a huge contributor toward supplying uniforms,” Perham said. “There are some years he has carried most of the monetary load in that area.”

“You pick from a list of names,” she said. “We then give you the correct sizes, and off you go to purchase sneakers, socks and underwear. It’s really that easy.”

The Council of Catholic Women has also given huge support along with Roddick, which is the way Perham likes it. She’d rather concentrate on schools.

I’m a country girl at heart.” Perham gives kudos to the local business community as well. “They have helped Back To Basics greatly over the years,” she said. “Whenever they call, I provide the names.” Perham said helping neighbors during hard personal times, helping them retain their dignity, would make

She does have some advice for anyone thinking of following in her footsteps. “You have to be dedicated,” Perham said. “You have to follow through. Find out what areas bring out your strengths, and then do your best.”

Even though her organization currently serves between 5,000 and 6,000 kids in Palm Beach County, some have suggested that the woman known as “the underwear lady” could drum up even more support for Back To Basics if she let the spotlight shine on her more brightly. That’s not going to happen. “Staying in the background is fine with me,” Perham said. “I like coming in the back door; I like anonymity. The only thing I’m concerned with is never failing the kids. Even if it takes spending my own money, I’ll make sure that I will always fulfill the promise.”

With its unique take on breakfast and lunch favorites, Short Stacks is the new Wellington hot spot to grab a bite. Located in the Wellington Town Square shopping plaza, Short Stacks elevates classic meals to a new, modern level. The restaurant opened in September, serving a modern twist on everyone’s favorite meals. Owner Mike Foley said he wanted to bring something different to the Wellington community. “We were looking for a different spin on breakfast and lunch,” he said. “We wanted something modern, crisp, clean, fresh and vibrant.” Foley lived in the western communities for 10 years before moving to West Palm Beach, where he owns several

other eateries. “I had my eye on this plaza for several years,” he said. “Finally, we got an opportunity to get into the center, so we took it. Short Stacks is totally different from what’s being served [in Wellington]. There aren’t a lot of breakfast and lunch places in the area.” The restaurant itself is clean and modern with a bright, inviting feel. Its tea-green walls are offset by dark wooden booths and tables, and there are minimal but artful decorations on the walls. The environment is relaxed and comfortable. “It’s a clean, modern look,” Foley said. “From the colors on the walls to the little bit of décor everywhere else, we kept it modern — even down to

tabletops themselves and what is on the table. We wanted something that was different from the ordinary breakfast and lunch, old-school diner look.” Though it is reminiscent of a diner, the modern take elevates the environment. Everything seems a step ahead, from the décor to the technology used by the wait staff. “We are totally wireless,” Foley said. “We use a wireless Apple product, like an iPod or iPhone, to take orders. It’s the latest technology.” This appreciation for modernity flows into the food and plating style. “We wanted to take some of the items and scale them up,” Foley said. “Everything is fresh and house-made, as we call it. Even the plating of food is very modern.”

Foley noted that in addition to classic meals, there are several specialty breakfasts. “We’re currently working with a physician to develop an even healthier menu,” he said. “It will list calories and different ingredients so people can get an idea of what they are consuming, especially if they are on a limited diet.” If you’re in for breakfast, try some classic staples like two fresh eggs, cooked any way you want them ($3.99), and add bacon, sausage or ham ($6.99) to make it more of all meal. “We have the same standard items that people know and love,” Foley said. But Short Stacks really shines with its specialty items, especially its namesake. “If you have the name Short Stacks, you better be able to make a good pancake,” Foley said.
