It’s February and the season is in full swing here in Wellington. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting most of our equestrian venues with my family, and we have truly enjoyed them all. I also know that Wellington business owners are happy to see the return of our seasonal equestrian friends. This month, we are celebrating the “Faces of WEF” inside our special Winter Equestrian Festival section. Join us as we take a look back at the history of Wellington’s signature show series, and how it has evolved into the world’s premier equestrian event. We also explore this year’s festival and take a look at some of the many amazing riders in “Faces of WEF.” In this issue, we sat down with dressage lover Kimberly Van Kampen Boyer, who explained why she chose to sponsor a new dressage arena in Wellington named in honor of her late father. Meanwhile, the American Cancer Society is celebrating 100 years of progress in the fight against cancer at the Diamond Centennial Ball, slated for the International Polo Club Palm Beach on March 16. We chat with event co-chairs Larry and Linda Smith on why they are supporting this important event. This month’s Wellington Fashion pictorial places the focus on some of Wellington’s most beautiful horses. Teaming up with

Special thanks to all the photographers who shared their excellent photography with our readers this month, highlighting our unique equestrian community. In closing, I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to all of you who sent well wishes, flowers and more, congratulating me on my new role as publisher — it is truly exciting. Tennis Center Will Get A New Home The Wellington Tennis Center will be moving, but to where remains undecided. The Wellington Village Council voted 4-1 last month to relocate the facility. Councilwoman Anne Gerwig was the lone dissenter, citing concerns about the additional $2.5 million it will cost to move the facility. “I don’t think that’s a good use of taxpayer dollars,” she said. The discussion of whether or not to move the Wellington Tennis Center has lasted months, with several workshops on the issue. Village Manager Paul Schofield told council members that they needed to decide whether they wanted to move the facility before plans can be made for the Wellington Community Center rebuild. Councilman Matt Willhite said he thought the facility should be moved in order to open up more parking. “I think we are trying to pack too many things into this one area,” he said. Willhite also said the tennis program would have more ability to expand in a standalone facility, but Gerwig felt Wellington was already offering residents a facility that exceeds what other municipalities offer. Leading locations for the new tennis center include a 10-acre site next to the Mall at Wellington Green and a village-owned civic site near the Village Walk community. Gerwig said that deciding on a location requires public input. “I think it’s premature for us to say we’re going to do this with no community input,” she said. Luncheon Moved From PBIEC — Lawsuits aimed at members of the Wellington Village Council prompted council members to relocate a Palm Beach County League of Cities luncheon originally planned for Feb. 20 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Instead, the luncheon will be held at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. When the issue of whether to move the event was raised at a Jan. 8 meeting, the council agreed to keep it at PBIEC if all council members were

invited. But then PBIEC representatives named both Councilman John Greene and Mayor Bob Margolis individually in lawsuits. Greene said he had spoken with IPC representatives, who offered their venue for the meeting. Vice Mayor Howard Coates said he wanted to be sure all of the council was comfortable at whatever location was chosen. “If they are not comfortable being at that site, I could not, in good conscience, push to keep it someplace where they would not feel comfortable,” he said of his fellow councilmen. But Councilwoman Anne Gerwig said it was playing politics no matter where they held it. “To say any location is not political is a little absurd,” she said. Coates said he was concerned with comfort, not politics. The motion to move the luncheon passed 4-1 with Gerwig dissenting. More Beds For Senior Home —The Wellington Village Council gave the green light last month for a senior housing facility to more than double its occupancy from six residents to 14. On Tuesday, Jan. 8, council members approved a development order petition for the New Age of Senior Care facility, located on the corner of Goldenrod Road and Hyacinth Place. Long Range Planning Director Tim Stillings noted that New Age initially wanted to apply for a designation to allow up to 21 beds, but must make improvements first. “That was the original request,” Stillings said. “They met most of the standards but were not able to meet some fire safety standards that would require the relocation of a fire hydrant.” Stillings said he expects them to return to apply for higher occupancy at a later date. Kim Glas-Castro, agent for the facility, said that it is already operating with six residents who live together in a familystyle environment. “I think there is a lot of support in the community for this type of facility,” Vice Mayor Howard Coates said, making a motion to approve the resolution, which passed unanimously.

Kimberly Van Kampen Boyer

Story by Lauren Miró Photos by Abner Pedraza

Dressage Enthusiast Aims To Build Interest In The Sport With passions for dressage, philanthropy and Spanish horses, Kimberly Van Kampen Boyer has already made a splash in international dressage competition, sending a horse to the 2012 London Olympics and building a world-class covered arena in Wellington. Now, Boyer is hoping to open new doors for dressage and its next generation of riders, bringing dressage to the forefront of equestrian sport. “I see great things happening for dressage,” she said. “It’s growing, and I think it has a great future here in Wellington.” In her quest to promote dressage, Boyer financed the new Van Kampen Arena, which will host world-class competition as part of the Global Dressage Festival but also provide a covered space for use by local nonprofits during the summer heat. A native of Illinois, Boyer became smitten with dressage more than 20 years ago. “I grew up with horses,” she said. “But we weren’t an equestrian family. We had pleasure horses. I grew up riding, but not competing. I truly got into horses in 1995 or 1996.” Boyer owned a dressage farm in Michigan and began coming to Wellington in 1998 to look for high-

quality horses. In 1999, she sent her horses down to compete at the Winter Equestrian Festival for the first time. Then, in 2000, she and her husband, Fredric Boyer, purchased the old Revlon Polo farm and converted it into what is now Hampton Green Farm, a training facility for Boyer’s prizewinning Spanish horses. “It’s a community like nowhere else in the world,” she said of Wellington. “Everyone has horses in common, but it’s also a community of people who like to compete and who like to win… The draw becomes as much about the community as the horses. You come to this one place and meet people from all over the world, from all walks of life.” Boyer has been heavily involved with the equestrian community, serving on the board of the United States Equestrian Federation as well as president of the United States P.R.E. Association, which promotes the pure Spanish breed in the U.S. Her horse, Grandioso III, competed for Spain in the 2012 London Olympics with rider Daniel Martin Dockx at the reins, helping to promote the breed Boyer loves so much. Boyer is also a member of Wellington

Equestrian Partners — and the sole dressage rider among them. “I am a minor partner amongst some very giant and dedicated people, but they were all jumpers,” she said. “I still am the only dressage enthusiast among the partners.” Wellington Equestrian Partners Managing Partner Mark Bellissimo considers her perspective valuable. “Kimberly is a great partner of ours and an amazing woman from both a professional and philanthropic perspective,” Bellissimo said, noting that she is the single greatest contributor to the FTI Great Charity Challenge thus far. “She has given $100,000 each of the last two years, plus sponsored teams for $25,000. She has really gone above and beyond to try and energize philanthropy in the community.” Though dressage had a presence in Wellington for many years, it took a hiatus when the Winter Equestrian Festival’s jumping classes simply grew too large to host the shows, Boyer said. “Dressage left simply because WEF outgrew the sport,” she said. “They really couldn’t spare the space.” Boyer said she and Olympic dressage rider Robert Dover approached Wellington Equestrian Partners with

the notion of bringing dressage back to Wellington. “We came up with the idea of a series for WEF,” she said. “The support amongst the partners was unanimous to keep dressage in Wellington and make it a third part of the crown jewels of equestrian sports in the community.”

steps — bigger than we expected — to build this facility,” she said. “We felt this was a way of being involved with it and standing by our commitment to the community.”

But Boyer said she never could have expected the overwhelming response, giving dressage its very own site. “I thought they would hold shows in the south show grounds [at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center],” she said.

But it will also serve as a space for nonprofit organizations to beat the summer heat. “The summer season in South Florida prohibits a lot of outdoor activity,” Boyer said. “Having a covered arena available to children’s groups and for outdoor, charitable summer events would help a lot of organizations that are here and open year-round. It was really devised to help the sport and the community.”

As a way to give back to the community and help promote the sport, Boyer paid for construction of the prominent Van Kampen Arena, named for her late father, Robert D. Van Kampen. “My family and I felt that the partnership had done so much, taken such big

Bellissimo agreed. “We both have a great interest in making sure we really give back to this community,” he said. “We decided to make it available for 28 days of usage by nonprofit organizations. It’s a really amazing gesture coming from a private facility,

and we were both eager to make sure it was a part of this arena.” Boyer’s family foundation, along with show promoters, will be working with local charities to come up with a schedule for its use. “Almost any outdoor activity can be done in that arena,” she said. “You can have a baseball league; you can have horse shows or fundraisers. If it can be done outside, it can be done more comfortably in that arena.” Part of her desire to be involved with the site, she said, was to give a new generation of riders something to aspire to. “At WEF, the little hunter and pony kids can go Saturday nights to the jumping under the lights and say, ‘When I get really good, that’s where I’m going to compete,’” she said.

programs,” Boyer said. “This year there is a winter intensive training program at Hampton Green Farm through Dressage4Kids that is bringing young people to Wellington to compete.”

Fostering the love of dressage among young riders is another of Boyer’s passions. She hopes to see her two daughters grow up in that community. “I think our sport is more focused on the next generation of riders than it ever has been before,” she said.

Boyer said she hopes to see the sport grow in popularity, pointing to freestyle dressage as a pathway to do so. “The freestyle competition is launching dressage into the national consciousness,” she said. “If you say to people, ‘You know that sport where they dance with horses to music?’ most people will know what you’re talking about.”

To help kids interested in dressage get a leg up, Boyer assisted in bringing renowned youth trainer Lendon Gray to Wellington. Gray runs the nonprofit organization Dressage4Kids Inc., which sponsors educational and competitive opportunities for young dressage riders. “If you’re a kid who wanted to do dressage, you really needed to get involved in one of Lendon Gray’s

She said that the sport fits especially well in Wellington. “It’s the diamonds and champagne event,” Boyer said. “It’s lauded as an art form meeting athleticism that really is the peak level of training for a horse. I really think there are great things to come.”

Bruce Duchossois Honored As Recipient Of The Equestrian Aid Foundation’s Luminary Award On Feb. 1, the Equestrian Aid Foundation honored Wellington’s R. Bruce Duchossois with its Luminary Award for his contributions to equestrian sports and the horse community. From Aiken, S.C., Duchossois grew up surrounded by horses. His mother rode saddle horses as a girl, and his father owned Arlington Park racetrack near Chicago. Duchossois is now one of the leading exhibitors in the Adult Amateur Hunter division. In addition to competing, he sponsors riders and classes in show hunters and jumpers, eventing, and combined driving. Duchossois strives to give back to the industry that has given him so much. He serves on EAF’s executive board, is a trustee of the United States Equestrian Team Foundation and co-chair of the USEF’s Owner Task Force. Duchossois also is an active member of

the United States Hunter Jumper Association and a board member of the Alltech National Horse Show. “Serving on the executive board of the Equestrian Aid Foundation has never been a job or obligation, but an honor,” Duchossois said. “As an individual who is involved in a variety of equestrian disciplines, I have seen firsthand how EAF can change the lives of men and women who otherwise would not be able to afford medical, rehabilitation and essential expenses. I am honored to have been chosen as the recipient of the 2013 Luminary Award and relish the opportunity to continue to promote the mission of EAF throughout the equestrian world.” The new tradition of the annual Luminary Award began last year with honoree Jane Forbes Clark. The award recognizes those who play a vital role in horse sports and imagine a bright future for equestrians and pave the way to making it a reality. The title of the Luminary Award comes from the fact that the individual who receives the honor works tirelessly to shine a bright light on the equestrian community, raising awareness for those in need on a regular basis. “Bruce Duchossois is passionate about helping others and an integral part of the Equestrian Aid Foundation and its mission to improve the lives of those who require assistance,” EAF President R. Scot Evans said. “He was chosen as the recipient of the 2013 Equestrian Aid Foundation Luminary Award to recognize and thank his long-term philanthropic endeavors and commitment

to the betterment of horse sports and the people within its community.” The Luminary Award is presented annually at the Equestrian Aid Foundation’s fundraiser, “Who Reins Supreme?” This year’s award ceremony took place Friday, Feb. 1 at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center. Presented by Wellington Classic Dressage, “Who Reins Supreme?” was a spectacular night featuring a reining competition with world-class dressage, show jumping, hunter and polo teams. The event also featured Taste of Charity, sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, showcasing delicious foods and cocktails from some of South Florida’s top restaurants. World Equestrian Games reining double gold medalist Tom McCutcheon served as special guest for the evening. The festivities raised money to support Equestrian Aid Foundation programs that financially assist equestrians, horsemen and equine-related professionals who are suffering from catastrophic illnesses and injuries. For more than 16 years, EAF has been dedicated to helping people from all riding disciplines, equine professions, backgrounds and ages cope through crisis and get back on their feet. In September 2012, EAF reached a milestone of distributing more than $2 million in funding to its recipients throughout its history. EAF continues to build upon its success and make strides toward a future when the equestrian community can breathe more easily knowing that its members are well cared for and supported. Major Milestone For American Cancer Society Diamond Centennial Ball In Wellington Marks 100th Anniversary By Deborah Welky

Six months after Larry and Linda Smith got married, Larry’s mother died of breast cancer at the age of 43. It motivated the couple to get involved with the American Cancer Society.

will serve as bartenders while patrons schmooze, bid on silent auction items and view a display of exotic cars. “We’ll have tip jars out and, hopefully, people will tip well,” Linda said.

“We want to cure this disease,” Larry said. “It has touched so many people. Everyone knows someone who has had it. This is something that affects a great many people, not just our family. We all need to work to find a cure.”

There will also be a golf tournament the day before the ball. The tournament will take place Friday, March 15 at Madison Green in Royal Palm Beach. More than 30 foursomes will compete.

This year, the Smiths celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary and the American Cancer Society celebrates 100 years of service. So the couple chose this year to head up the society’s biggest fundraiser, the Diamond Centennial Ball. “We’ve worked on ACS committees before, but we’ve never chaired anything this big,” Linda said.

“Sponsors who come in at a certain level can play with some celebrity pros,” Larry said. “Everyone will enjoy lunch and dinner, raffles, hole-in-one competitions and more.”

Their first step was to secure legendary event planner Bruce Sutka, guaranteeing creative surroundings and unmatched ambiance. “There are other cancer charities out there,” said Larry, who sits on the board of the society’s Palm Beach Unit. “But the American Cancer Society gives the most money to cancer research. There are over 40 Nobel laureates in their history. As I get older, more mature and more successful, I am certainly motivated to give more. Our goal this year is to raise $180,000 for cancer research.” The ball will be held Saturday, March 16 at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, but pre-events begin Wednesday, Feb. 6 with a big party at the Grille restaurant in Wellington. Internationally known polo players and celebrities from the equestrian world 36

The next evening, the fun begins at 6:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour at IPC, followed by a dinner featuring fantastic food from Aaron’s Catering. “They’re phenomenal,” Linda said. “There will also be silent and live auctions and amazing surprises that I can’t talk about. Everything Bruce Sutka does is magic... It’s going to be good.” The Edge band will play everything from disco to modern pop and Top 40 tunes. “We’re going to do a lot of dancing that night,” Larry promised. “It’s going to be a very elegant evening as well as high-energy and lots of fun — a huge birthday celebration for the ACS.” The 2013 Diamond Centennial Ball is one of many events organized by ACS volunteer committees and hosted by the Palm Beach County Unit. Proceeds support the organization’s missions: • Research: The ACS is the largest private, nonprofit source of financing for scientists studying cancer, aiding

in 25 percent of all new investigators’ research on cancer, which led to discoveries that have resulted in 46 becoming Nobel laureates. • Education: The ACS sponsors support groups, classes, seminars and forums teaching people how to avoid preventable cancers, when to get early detection tests and what treatment options exist. It also does outreach with health professionals on how to care for cancer patients and develops programs aimed at youth and adults stressing the advantages of good lifestyle choices. • Advocacy: The American Cancer Society makes a difference in the federal, state and local political arenas. Changes in laws can affect millions of people, and ACS harnesses its input to exponentially expand and enhance its mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. • Service: Money that the ACS raises improves the quality of life for cancer patients and their families by providing information through the ACS call center and web site, such as on the Clinical Trials Matching Service and treatment decision tools. Cancer patients can also receive transportation, lodging and answers to financial and insurance questions. Each year, an estimated 7,909 people in our area and more than 113,400 people across Florida are diagnosed with cancer, and they can turn to the American Cancer Society for help. ACS volunteers make the difference, serving on boards and committees; educating people about cancer risk reduction, detection and treatment; providing hope and support for

patients and families; and advocating for the government to make fighting cancer a priority. This volunteer army also organizes the society’s signature fundraising events — Relay for Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and various balls and galas. The American Cancer Society provides lifesaving cancer information through partnerships with most major local hospital systems and healthcare organizations; addresses cancer disparities in the community through partnerships with diverse organizations, community education grants and other awareness campaigns; and provides valuable cancer information to more than 1 million Floridians through www. cancer.org. It also helps people get well. Locally, 10 patients found support through “Reach to Recovery” for breast cancer and “Man to Man” for prostate cancer; 125 received transportation services

to and from treatment; 13 received free lodging at one of Florida’s Hope Lodges while undergoing treatment; and 28 local children and families received support through the “Reaching Out to Cancer Kids” program. Twelve children enjoyed a camp experience through the R.O.C.K. Camp in partnership with Camp Boggy Creek, and 16 young cancer survivors attended college on R.O.C.K. College Scholarships. Prevention and treatment are better for nearly every cancer patient in our community because of research funded by the American Cancer Society, which has led to a wide range of new detection methods, cuttingedge therapies and cancer drugs and improved treatment options. Right now, two multiyear grants worth $330,000 are in effect at Florida Atlantic University. And the American Cancer Society

fights societal ills. Floridians are protected from the dangers of secondhand smoke in virtually all workplaces because of its efforts to pass a constitutional amendment. Florida’s youth learn about tobacco prevention and adults receive significant smoking cessation assistance because of the society’s success in securing permanent financing for the state’s youth tobacco prevention program. And, since 1995, ACS has secured more than $825 million in legislative appropriations in support of the fight against cancer. “We are honored to be celebrating 100 years of our accomplishments in the fight against cancer,” Unit Executive Director Martha Gilmartin said. “This is an opportunity for us to thank all who have been a part of this — volunteers, donors, survivors, family and friends. Our 100th birthday is our chance to celebrate and, most importantly, our opportunity to set our agenda to finish the fight against cancer.”

ACS programs also provide wigs and makeup for women battling cancer, as well as rides to and from treatment for patients. “We have been able to support local cancer survivors through our many programs from ‘Look Good, Feel Better’ to ‘Road To Recovery’ to helping send pediatric cancer survivors to summer camp and providing college scholarships,” Gilmartin said. This year, nearly 14 million cancer survivors will celebrate another birthday, thanks in part to the progress the American Cancer Society has made in its first 100 years. But the organization won’t stop there; its leaders and members are beginning to be able to envision the end of cancer as we know it — from deadly to treatable, from curable to preventable. Wellington Skies Light Up For The Equestrian Season Local photographer Michelle Armstrong has captured the mystical light of the sunset as the day turns to night for our equestrian-themed pictorial this month. Armstrong’s work intrigued us from the start. She elegantly weaves lightscapes throughout this collection from simple blue haze to a cascading dark storm under navy blue skies. The results look like jewels scattered across a dramatic landscape, creating sweeping tones throughout the photography.

Kathrine, featured in a purple taffeta pinched-pleated gala gown with rhinestone embellished closures, kneels to whisper to palomino Holly.

As a throwback to empress days, our models this month get a chance to dress up as if they were awaiting their prince to come and sweep them off their feet, gallantly riding away into the night. The studio provided these turn-of-thecentury-inspired gowns, adding a rich jewel-tone pop of color complementing our princesses in waiting.

Wellington Equestrian Gallery And Mall Fills A Unique Niche The new Wellington Equestrian Gallery & Mall offers a unique collection of sport art with an equestrian focus — and judging from the crowds of people who have visited it during its first month of operation, it seems to fill an important niche. The gallery offers an eclectic selection of items that include paintings, bronzes, estate and fine jewelry, antique furniture, garden adornments, accessories and objet d’art. There is truly something for even the most discerning connoisseur of fine art. This unique establishment was the brainchild of Jack Van Dell, owner of Van Dell Jewelry and a longtime Wellington businessman. “I talk to people all day long in my jewelry store, and I get a pretty good feel for what people are thinking and looking for,” he said. “I felt that people in Wellington, especially during the

winter equestrian season, would support an art gallery, and so far, that has been true.” Within the first few weeks of opening, the Wellington Equestrian Gallery & Mall has established itself as carrying the largest collection of fine equestrian art in the South. International art dealer and collector Jeanne Chisholm has helped to create the nationwide, and even worldwide, span of this local gallery. “We have new artists’ works arrive at the gallery every day. For instance, just in time for our grand opening, we had some paintings by Jans Lukens come in. He does fabulous dressage paintings, and we knew that they would be a great addition to our collection,” Chisholm said. “Every time someone comes to visit us, they are guaranteed to see something new.”

Visitors to the gallery are spreading the word throughout Wellington and beyond, and the vendors and artists are spreading the word to their friends and fellow artists around the country. “Artists who are already displaying their art with us are very enthusiastic and are encouraging their friends in the art world to come down to Wellington for the winter,” said Robin Carr, the gallery’s manager. “I get calls every day from artists inquiring about the gallery, and we even have started a waitlist.” By all accounts, the Wellington Equestrian Gallery & Mall has established itself as a great place to see and be seen. It is located in the Wellington Courtyard Shops at the intersection of Wellington Trace and Greenview Shores Blvd. For more information, call (561) 333-3100 or visit www.wellingtonequestrianmall.com.

children, junior, amateur and adult riders.

The event is based at the 100-acre Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, a facility managed by Equestrian Sport Productions (ESP), the company that also produces the horse shows.

The 2013 season, sponsored by FTI Consulting, is bound to be better than ever, bursting at the seams with talent, prize money and top-tier competition.

For 12 weeks from early January through late March each year, more than 3,000 horses take part in competitions that boast more than $6 million in prize money to be won by

“We have significantly increased the prize money available this year,” ESP President Michael Stone said. “We now have two FEI five-star events during week nine and the FTI Final in week 12.”

An estimated 10,000 exhibitors come to Wellington, representing more than 30 countries and 49 states, and their horses share a net value of well over $500 million. WEF is also known for its Olympiccaliber competition, often serving as a place for future members of the United States Equestrian Team to prove themselves. Last year, all eyes turned to Wellington as WEF hosted one leg of the selection trials for the U.S. Olympic show jumping team.

This season, the high level competition kicked off with a bang at the inaugural $100,000 Trump Invitational Grand Prix at the iconic Mar-a-Lago Club on Palm Beach. Kent Farrington took home the win at Donald Trump’s scenic estate aboard Amalaya Investments’ Dynamo.

Stone said. “But as the weeks go by, the competition will really become fierce.”

Stone said you can expect to see riders crank up the pace as the competition gets tougher but ever more lucrative throughout the season. “I think you’ll see that the riders will start slowly,”

“There’s a new FEI series for the Nations Cup with a big final in Europe in September,” Stone said. “Our Nations Cup was chosen to be one of the qualifiers, so that will really put

Last year, top riders were focused on getting to the Olympics. This year, Stone said that there will be plenty of excitement as they compete for a spot in the Nations Cup Finals.

the pressure on the U.S. team. They only have two chances to qualify, and they all really want to get to that final.”

— who helped Great Britain win the team gold in the London Olympic Games last year.”

The $75,000 FEI Nations Cup presented by G&C Farm will be held Saturday, March 1.

Not only has the level of competition at WEF increased, but the facilities are constantly being improved.

This year, Stone said many top riders will be returning to defend their titles, or to try and snatch a title from last year’s stars.

Since Wellington Equestrian Partners, the owners behind Equestrian Sport Productions, took over the facility in 2005, the firm has invested more than $200 million into making a world-class facility with the best in footing, amenities and more.

He pointed to 18-year-old Reed Kessler, who tied last year for the National Show Jumping Championship with legendary rider Margie Engle. Kessler was then named the youngest rider ever to the United States Olympic Equestrian Team, competing for her country in the London Olympics. “She will be one to keep an eye on, along with her up-and-coming rival, Katie Dinan,” Stone said. “That rivalry will really be something to watch. Of course McLain Ward will be starring, as well as Laura Kraut and Nick Skelton 52

This year, the facility will have some updated areas, Stone said. “We’ve replaced the VIP area, as well as continued general improvements,” he said. “We have improved the landscaping around the entire facility — it’s really beautiful now.” Also new this year is a whimsical Venetian carousel, offering rides for children and adults. “It will be great for the kids,” Stone said.

It’s not only competitors and spectators who are getting new digs this year; even the horses are pampered. “We have also developed a new FEI stabling area, which will have permanent stalls and a much bigger area for our international horses,” Stone said. Though the competition seems to grow each year, show officials are dedicated to continuing to offer more competition and more amenities to truly make Wellington the equestrian capital of the world. “We’re continuing to grow every year,” Stone said. “In the future, we’ll be trying to get even more FEI championships at the venue.” The Winter Equestrian Festival began Wednesday, Jan. 9 and runs through March 31. Each Saturday night, the facility features its “Saturday Night Lights” series with jumping in the main arena under the stars, along with food, drinks and a children’s area. Three Decades Of WEF

The History Of Wellington’s Signature Show Series Story by Lauren Miró  Photo courtesy United States Equestrian Federation

From three show rings and a few hundred horses to dozens of rings, thousands of horses and over 10,000 riders, the Winter Equestrian Festival has grown from a mere stop on a show circuit to the central event in a yearround thriving equestrian community. Three decades ago, the land that now hosts the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center was little more than swampland. At the time, the community was in its infancy and polo was the name of the game in Wellington. But polo legend and early Wellington developer Bill Ylvisaker had a second equestrian love: show jumping. He envisioned a horse community that boasted several equestrian sports, and with that dream in mind he sought out show producer Gene Mische. At the time, Mische ran what was called the Sunshine Circuit, a show series with stops up and down the west coast of Florida, but Ylvisaker meant to woo him to Wellington, and woo him he did. Mische, who felt it was important to draw equestrian competition to South Florida, landed in Wellington and relocated his company, Stadium Jumping Inc., to the area. In 1979, he launched the Winter Equestrian Festival and, along with it, the idea of a long-running show series all in one location. This would change Wellington’s history, truly pinning it as the winter equestrian capital of the world. Mische helped grow and promote not only WEF, but the sport as a whole, 56 February February 2013 2013 |wellington |wellington the the magazine| magazine| 56

attracting high-level competition and capitalizing on opportunities for growth. In 2002, he hosted the firstever outdoor Nations Cup during WEF, helping to thrust the community into the international spotlight. Today, WEF is the largest and longestrunning consecutive show series in the world, drawing riders and spectators from across the globe. And the community grew with it, thriving and transforming into a true equestrian destination where riders and trainers could train year-round and show in the winter. Indeed, the horse is so ingrained in the Wellington community that the Village of Wellington now prominently displays the animal in its logo, signaling to all that it has truly embraced its signature industry. But as the shows continued to expand, room for growth was limited and some even questioned the longtime health of the festival. As Stadium Jumping’s lease ran out on the facility, several members of the community stepped in to make sure the shows stayed in Wellington. Wellington Equestrian Partners was formed, initially including Managing Partner Mark Bellissimo and his wife Katherine, Roger Smith, Dennis Dammerman and the Burton family. They sought to take over control of the shows from Stadium Jumping and the facility from property owner Palm Beach Polo. In late 2007, after much negotiation, Wellington Equestrian Partners gained control of both the facility and the shows, transforming the area into what

today is the world-class Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The partnership, which has since expanded to include a number of other stakeholders, invested more than $200 million into the equestrian community, attracting the pinnacle of equestrian elite, both riders and competitions, to a completely renovated show grounds. WEF has played host to Olympic-caliber competition, but is a show series that promotes riders of all ages and abilities, from pony hunters to adult amateurs. In addition to the expansions and upgrades, Wellington Equestrian Partners has sought to better integrate the greater Wellington community into the horse world, launching a series of family-friendly events to thrill spectators young and old, as well as giving back to the community through the Great Charity Challenge. WEF is now nationally renowned for its high-level competition and the top level riders that make Wellington their home each winter. As the show and facilities continue to grow, WEF is expected to bring more of the top competitions in the world right here to Wellington and truly put a shine on the crown jewel that is the winter equestrian capital of the world.

The Great Charity Challenge Has Given Millions To Local Nonprofits By Lauren Miró

One of the most anticipated events of the Winter Equestrian Festival, the FTI Consulting Great Charity Challenge, awards $1.5 million each year to local charities. Created by the Bellissimo family, the event pairs teams of professional, amateur and junior riders with a randomly selected charity, putting them in the arena to compete in a relay race for prize money. The event was created in 2010 by Equestrian Sport Productions CEO Mark Bellissimo and his daughter, Paige, with the goal of bringing the greater community closer to its equestrian neighbors. Each year, the Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments, draws thousands to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center to cheer on their charity.

60February February2013 2013|wellington |wellingtonthe themagazine| magazine| 60

“This event allows us to showcase and to financially support the broad missions of 34 randomly selected charities from Palm Beach County,” Bellissimo said. “It is unique to get this many charities involved in a single event, so it is not about a specific charity but the spirit of giving. My family, my fellow Wellington Equestrian Partners, and the equestrian community are very fortunate to enjoy this lifestyle, and this is a great opportunity for us to give back to our community.” All registered nonprofit organizations in Palm Beach County are eligible, with names drawn from the hundreds of charities entered each year. Each chosen charity is guaranteed to walk away at least $10,000 richer, and the winner takes home $150,000.

This year’s Great Charity Challenge took place Saturday, Jan. 26. Riders Darragh Kenny, Catherine Pasmore and Meg O’Mara were the winning team on behalf of their charity, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). The winning team was sponsored by Jessie Pasmore and Martha Jolicoeur with corporate sponsor Stone Hill Farm. A crowd of over 5,000 spectators came out to enjoy the fun event as part of the Saturday Night Lights series. JDRF took home the $150,000 grand prize. Coming in second was College for Kids/Take Stock in Children, sponsored by the Mirabal family and G&C Farm as well as corporate sponsor Palm Beach Illustrated. Venezuelan riders Maria Emilia Chapellin Mirabal, Carolina Chapellin Mirabal and Luis

Hazelwood said the money will go a long way to help the nonprofit’s mission of supporting diabetes research. “This is the most exciting thing that has happened to us in a number of years,” she said. “We were really pleased to learn that our team sponsor, Jessie Pasmore, has a personal connection to Type 1 diabetes, and we were not even aware of that. The teams are just randomly assigned, so we think there was some serendipity.” Equestrian Sport Productions donates its time, venue and proceeds to the event, which is made possible thanks to generous contributions by team sponsors, families who donate to support a team and select the amateur and professional riders who compete alongside Olympic-caliber riders. Also each year, there is an online voting contest that provides Great Charity Challenge nonprofits an additional way to earn money. The winner this year was Danny and Ron’s Rescue with the Wellington PTO/PTA in second place and Children, Hope & Horses in third. KENT FARRINGTON Kent Farrington’s riding career features a number of big wins that have kept him at the top of the leader boards. In 2001, he was given the Maxine Beard Award for his potential to represent the U.S. in international competition. The award proved to be an accurate prediction, as Farrington and his mount Up Chiqui have won more than 20 grand prix classes since 2005. They were crowned the Rolex/USEF National Show Jumping Champions in 2007. A year later they represented the U.S. in the FEI World Cup Finals and also helped pull out a U.S. win in the Nations Cup. In 2011, Farrington and Uceko were a part of the gold medal team at the Pan American Games, and last year they made an impressive showing at the USET Olympic Trials. Most recently, Farrington made a splash when he won the inaugural $100,000 Trump Invitational Grand Prix aboard Dynamo. |wellington the magazine| February 2013

REED KESSLER

REED KESSLER Though still young, Reed Kessler has an impressive career ahead of her that sparked last year when, at age 17, she was named to the U.S. Olympic Team — the youngest rider ever to receive the honor. Though she has only recently caught the public eye, Kessler already has numerous national and international awards under her belt. In 2011, she won a gold medal in the Junior Jumper National Champions with the USEF Team, and last year she shared the honor of USEF National Show Jumping Champion with legend Margie Engle. As her career has just begun to ramp up, Kessler is expected to continue to shine at WEF this season. |wellington the magazine| February 2013

McLAIN WARD McLain Ward has long been a fierce competitor. A New York native, he rose to fame when, at age 14, he won the United States Equestrian Federation Show Jumping Derby as well as the equitation medal finals, making him the youngest rider to win both in one year. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, earning the team jumping gold for the U.S. in 2004 and in 2008. His horse, Sapphire, has become famous in her own right as one of the most well-known jumpers in modern history. Together Ward and Sapphire not only rose to Olympic gold, but they also took home a silver medal in the 2006 Word Equestrian Games and finished second in the 2009 World Cup Finals. Sapphire retired last year, and Ward is expected to compete this season with Antares F. They’ve already captured the 2012 $100,000 Wells Fargo Grand Prix of Devon. |wellington the magazine| February 2013

EquiFit Inc. Introduces The Next Generation Of Equestrian Defense To establish new standards of excellence, extraordinary goals must be set. No one knows this better than the team at EquiFit Inc. For over a decade, EquiFit has been an innovator in the equestrian arena and an advocate for the sport. As a company composed of riders, EquiFit is dedicated to seeking and developing new equipment to help horses and riders perform, recover and be more comfortable so they can succeed at all levels of equestrian sport. Always committed to both horses and riders, EquiFit utilizes a unique blend of ingenuity and horse-world expertise. The company’s efforts to adapt premium innovations in healthcare and fitness to the needs of equestrians has resulted in products with a custom fit that perform both in and out of the ring.

Kent Farrington was using a special set of D-Teq boots to help test them in advance of their release when he won the $250,000 FTI Consulting Grand Prix at the Hampton Classic last September. “The new D-Teq boots from EquiFit are the best boots they’ve made so far,” he said. “It’s the same quality that you would expect from all their other products. D-Teq has helped my horses continue to win over the past year.” EquiFit knows what they’re doing. By combining personal rider experience with cutting-edge technology and classic equestrian style, EquiFit has created the next generation of defense, and a strong choice for every rider. For more information about EquiFit, visit www.equifit.net. D-Teq and ImpacTeq will be available for purchase at the show grounds and at fine tack shops nationwide.

For the last several years, the EquiFit research and development team has been focusing its attention on defense. The goal was to develop the firm’s strongest boot to date — one that could stand up to any obstacle. A fairly lofty goal, yet the results are impressive. EquiFit is introducing its new D-Teq line of boots at the 2013 FTI Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington. D-Teq’s anatomically molded outer shell is a virtually unbreakable shock absorber that offers riders unparalleled protection. For even greater defense, D-Teq boots are lined with a groundbreaking new liner. ImpacTeq liners transform from soft to rigid upon impact. All of this revolutionary technology and engineering is presented with classic styling. However, this unique boot is anything but traditional. EquiFit founder and CEO Alexandra Cherubini said that all EquiFit products emanate from some of the top innovations in the human medical field. “We take materials that were invented for humans and adapt them to suit the needs of the equine athlete,” said Cherubini, an amateur jumper rider at WEF. “We see technology and equipment evolving quickly in other professional sports; we take those cues and apply them to our own needs to create equipment that will keep horses safe, allow them to perform at their best, and look good while they’re at it. We deliver the whole package.” |wellington the magazine| February 2013

Palm Beach Equine Clinic is a major contributor to the Winter Equestrian Festival, the Global Dressage Festival, Gold Coast Dressage, Wellington Classic Dressage, International Horse Sport Dressage and the Great Charity Challenge, he noted. Additionally, Palm Beach Equine Clinic donates veterinary care and supplies to the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center. The clinic regularly works with thousands of sport horses spanning multiple disciplines: dressage, polo, show jumping, racing, Western performance and companion horses. “We are a full-service hospital providing support to the local equine practitioners with diagnostic imaging, surgical, medical and reproductive referrals,” Swerdlin said. “Palm Beach Equine Clinic looks forward to the future, with additional veterinarians, specialists and new technology as we continue to provide exceptional care to the horse and give back to our community.” Palm Beach Equine Clinic is located at 13125 Southfields Rd. in Wellington. Hand-Painted Venetian Carousel New At Show Grounds This Season Story by Lauren Miró ◆ Photo by Abner Pedraza

A stunning, hand-painted Venetian carousel now sits as a warm welcome to the entryway of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, and show promoters hope the whimsical fixture will serve as a beacon for the children and families of Wellington. “We thought it would be a great opportunity not only to have it as an entrance feature, but also to try to create a magnet that will bring families to the facility,” said Mark Bellissimo, CEO of Equestrian Sport Productions. The carousel is open to the public during Saturday Night Lights at PBIEC as well as for events during the week. “We plan to have nights where it is open for a small fee, and the net proceeds will go to charity,” Bellissimo explained. The carousel also goes hand-in-hand with a newly installed Italian wood-fire pizza oven that is serving up delicious slices for attendees. “During the week, we hope to do a pizza night where the carousel is free and families can come out, enjoy a slice of pizza and ride,” Bellissimo said. “We really want to engage the community with something that is fun and accessible.”

Florence when we saw this beautiful Bertazzon carousel in one of the plazas. There were hundreds of kids and families riding and hanging out around it. We thought it would be perfect to go with the Winter Equestrian Festival.” It will be part of the children’s area that springs to life each Saturday night, supplementing the temporary attractions such as the pony rides, bounce houses, petting zoos and other fixtures that are available for families to enjoy each weekend. “The children’s area is bigger this year,” Bellissimo said. “We’re still going to have live pony rides, but there’s just this magical impact that a carousel has on small children and adults, too.” Already it has drummed up some interest. “People are calling us every day and asking about it,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a big hit.”

Bellissimo hopes the carousel will be a draw that gets families interested in finding out more about the equestrian community. “I think it will be a great opportunity to have an attraction for people to come out to,” he said. “Then, hopefully, they will find out what’s out here and continue to explore other areas of the venue.” The attraction is part of Bellissimo’s desire to involve the greater community in equestrian sport, he said. “It’s a fun and very unique example of what we’re trying to do,” he said. “We want to show our dedication to families and young children in Wellington. I hope every child gets a chance to come out and enjoy it.” For more info., visit www.equestriansport. com or call (561) 793-5867.

Exact dates for the pizza nights and other events will be posted online at www.equestriansport.com, Bellissimo said. Abigail McArdle And Cosma 20 Pair Proves There’s No Challenge They Can’t Tackle The High Junior and Amateur-Owner Jumper division is one of the most competitive in the country. It takes more than just a talented horse or a gifted rider to win; it takes speed and precision. In 2012, one rider won events week after week with continually clean, quick efforts over some of the nation’s most challenging courses. Eighteen-year-old Abigail McArdle and her chestnut mare Cosma 20 topped the leaderboard throughout the year, showcasing an unstoppable partnership. McArdle trains with Katie Prudent, a legend in her own right, whose knack

for picking horses proved on target when she found Cosma 20. The young rider and talented mare were paired toward the end of last year’s Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, and by spring they were in the winners circle. During the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, they captured division championships during both weeks of the competition. McArdle earned the title of Show Jumping Hall of Fame Rider of the Month for May. Then came international success when they traveled to Canada for the Spruce Meadows Tournament, racking up six victories over five weeks, including the

final $20,000 Clark Builders Junior/ Amateur Grand Prix. “Through this whole experience at Spruce Meadows, I felt like I’ve gotten to know Cosma 20 a lot better,” McArdle said. “It was a new experience for both of us, and it only helped us to improve. Every round, she seemed more confident and more focused.” McArdle was about to have the biggest win of her career. Riders work all year to compete at the Adequan/FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North. She and Cosma 20 laid down five clear rounds in three days to

capture the Individual Junior Show Jumping Gold Medal, and also helped her team from Zone 5 win the silver. “It was really great to fulfill that accomplishment; it was such an honor,” she said. “I had a lot of pressure going in, everyone expected me to do well. I really had to keep a cool head and do what needed to be done.” McArdle and Cosma 20 started off the competition with a winning round in the first speed phase, topping the second-place finisher by almost five seconds with the rails intact. As they moved on to team competition, the pair helped Zone 5 win the silver medal with two more clear rounds. The real pressure came the next morning, when two more rounds separated them from the individual gold medal. “I thrive under pressure, and so does my horse,” McArdle said. “It was a matter of holding it together and not doing anything stupid. I was nervous, but I have a lot of confidence in my horse and I knew we could do it.” Once again they tackled the championship tracks, leaving each rail in place and finishing with zero faults, winning the gold medal. “I know Cosma so well now that it seemed easy,” McArdle smiled. “It’s nice to have a horse that round after round was building and doing better. She’s built for this type of competition, she’s hot and has a lot of energy, and that’s what you need to jump five clear rounds.”

The next national championship for junior riders was the Randolph College/USEF National Junior Jumper Championships at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show in the fall. This time, McArdle helped Zone 5 capture the USEF Prix de States Team Championship and later earned the Individual Junior Jumper Reserve Championship.

During the team competition, McArdle was the last rider, and she had to lay down a clear trip for the team to win. Once again she and Cosma 20 rose to the challenge, vaulting Zone Five to the top of the podium for the gold medal. “I had never shown Cosma indoors before, but after doing so well the first day, the team decided to have me ride in the anchor position,” McArdle said. “It was a lot of pressure, but it was good pressure because it’s always an honor to ride as the anchor for your team.”

“My horse has been amazing all year,” McArdle said. “That was definitely a really emotional win for me. I thought it was a really good way to not only end the season but also to end my junior years.” Now, McArdle is returning to Wellington for the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival, this time as an amateur. “I’ve been going to Wellington since I was a kid showing in small ponies,” she recalled. “I‘ve had a chance to see the show progress to what it is today. It’s really great to be down there for the length of the show and compete against the best equestrians in the world. It’s a beautiful facility and it’s a great community, so I am looking forward to showing there again this year.” McArdle graduated from high school last spring and is taking a year to focus on showing before going to college next fall. She will be attending the University of Miami, where she won a

four-year academic scholarship and will major in entrepreneurship in the School of Business Administration. “I am still making a plan with Katie [Prudent] to see what she wants Cosma to do,” McArdle explained. “I am probably going to kick off right away during the first week. This is my first year not doing school when I am in Wellington, so I am excited to have more time to enjoy the town.” 2013 looks very bright for the winning duo. “Cosma is really smart. Everything is a learning process with that mare, and you can see that in the way she corrects any little mistakes,” McArdle said. “This past year was way beyond anything I could have expected, and it’s such a great junior year for me… To go to all of the different venues and be so consistent is really special.”

Martha Jolicoeur Combines Her Two Passions Into A Successful Real Estate Career By Jennifer Ward

When it comes to real estate and equestrian sport, Martha Jolicoeur of Illustrated Properties has successfully combined two passions into one. A former grand prix show jumping competitor, the same qualities that once made Jolicoeur successful in the show ring have helped her to build a career as one of Wellington’s topranked real estate agents. Married to world-renowned horse trainer Pierre Jolicoeur, Jolicoeur first began coming to Wellington as a seasonal resident in 1979. In 2005, she and her family made the move permanently, selling their farm in Virginia in order to make Wellington their year-round home. While Jolicoeur’s real estate skills were easily transferrable, it was her intimate knowledge of the equestrian

community and its unique needs that made her an asset to the Wellington community. “I love my job, and I love living in Wellington,” Jolicoeur said. “It is a pleasure and a privilege to support the horse community in Wellington. We have show jumping, dressage and polo right here in our back yard. Without that, Wellington wouldn’t be what it is.” Jolicoeur’s family has thrived in Wellington, with Pierre’s saddle design and jump-building businesses both excelling. Pierre also provides an added asset for Jolicoeur’s clients, advising on farm planning and home renovation projects. Their daughter, Isabel, now 21, has put her lifelong riding skills to good use as a member of the varsity equestrian team at University

of Georgia, where she is a junior. Following in her parents’ footsteps, Isabel is interested in combining her hobbies into a career in real estate and equine law. “I have been lucky to be able to turn my passion for horses and the sport into a job that I love,” Jolicoeur explained. “One of the reasons I love Florida is that we have the sunshine and the horses together. We’ve even taken up boating recently, and I really enjoy our weekends at the beach.” The same thrill that Jolicoeur once felt competing is now found by matching people with a home that truly fits their lifestyle. Hardworking and honest, Jolicoeur’s reputation has earned her a loyal clientele that includes the biggest names in horse sport. “I am lucky that I get to work with so many special and smart people who excel at what they do, whether it is riding or other business,” Jolicoeur said. “Over the years, my business has grown, and I’ve added fellow agent Angela Pappas to the team, allowing us to cover more elements of the real estate market.” Buying or selling a property with Martha Jolicoeur means there will be one more fan cheering from the sidelines, as she enjoys seeing her clients succeed both at home and in the competition arena. “I deal with people who share my passion for the sport,” Jolicoeur said. “We speak a special language, and that’s horses.” For more information, visit www. marthasproperties.com. |wellington the magazine| February 2013

Dr. Vikram Mohip Specializes In Dental Implants Story by Ron Bukley  Photo by Abner Pedraza

Dr. Vikram Mohip of Grayhills, Mohip Dental & Associates has assembled the latest in implantology using computerassisted tomography to ensure precise placement. Mohip has put this new equipment in place over the past year. “I have a CT scan machine in my office. It takes a 3-D image of the entire mouth and face, and I plan out all my implants and surgeries from that,” he said. Mohip, who did a fellowship in implant dentistry, has been working with implants since 2002. “I’ve taken it pretty much to the next level,” he said. “It’s the best way because you don’t have to worry about anything. You take a CT scan, make a surgical guide and place the implant.” The procedure works for simple implants as well as full dental reconstructions. In-house tomography enables rapid evaluation of whether a patient is a candidate for implants. “I can scan you and in less than five minutes tell you whether

an implant can be placed,” he said, noting that the machine is a rarity in South Florida. “It takes the guesswork out of implants.”

one that cuts teeth or hard tissue, and one that is for soft-tissue,” he said. “With the soft-tissue laser, we can reshape people’s gums.”

The image gets turned into a surgical stent used to guide the drill for precise placement of the implant screw. “The drilling is to a minimum, and it’s guided,” Mohip said. “It’s almost like robotics.”

The hard-tissue laser is used for fillings and other procedures. “With just my laser, I don’t have to use anesthetic,” he said, which is especially effective for children or people who have had bad experiences. “It works wonderfully. We use laser on a daily basis.”

These scans are changing the way the office does everything. “I’m going to be using CT scans for simple fillings and root canals because you can see the image so well,” he said. “X-rays can’t show you what this shows you.” Mohip also does cosmetic dentistry, which he incorporates closely with implantology, but he stressed that it is important to achieve a healthy dental state before moving to cosmetology. “The most important thing is periodontal, the gum tissue and bones,” he said. These ultra-modern techniques minimize healing time. “I also have a machine that measures how well the implant is integrated, which many dentists do not have,” he said. “It tells you exactly whether you can put the tooth on it or you have to wait longer. Before, you had to guess.” Mohip has dedicated 10 years to this implant specialty. “I love it. It’s my passion,” he said. Aside from implants, the office is a preferred provider of Invisalign invisible braces and also offers a wide array of other dental services, including laser procedures free of anesthetic injections. “We have two types of lasers,

Numbing is achieved through the laser’s energy. “We hold the laser around that tooth for about 15 seconds,” he said. “That gives temporary anesthesia to that tooth. It’s a fantastic way of doing it.” Mohip did his fellowship in implant dentistry with the American Dental Implant Association in Miami and his residency at the VA Medical Center in Riviera Beach. The office, at 250 Professional Way near Binks Forest Elementary School, has open architecture with high ceilings, natural lighting and a comfortable waiting room. “We try to keep it as a family atmosphere,” Mohip said. “We don’t cut corners. Everything we have is state-of-the-art.” Mohip also strives to have a positive overall influence on the community, doing charitable work and sponsoring several youth sports teams. “It’s important, for sure, to help the youth in our community,” he said, noting that the office has also participated in the Komen Foundation’s Race for the Cure. Broker Nancy Jennings Leads Keller Williams Market Center In Wellington Story by Deborah Welky  Photo by Abner Pedraza

Once a stay-at-home mom, Nancy Jennings always enjoyed decorating, looking at homes and improving her own home. When her children became a bit more independent, those interests led her to a career in real estate. “I started in 1985 as an agent and got my broker’s license in 2001,” Jennings recalled. “I have a passion for it. I truly love it.” That passion had her opening the doors to an office of her own, the Keller Williams Wellington market center, on Jan. 5, 2005. Her 100 agents now do the listing and selling of properties while Jennings keeps the ship afloat by making sure everything is done properly, all the while training both new and seasoned agents so that they may more effectively grow their businesses.

Jennings prides herself on customer service, something that can be in short supply these days as more and more companies try to streamline and cut back.

as Port St. Lucie and as far south as Miami.

“We’re open seven days a week,” Jennings said. “We have a receptionist here to answer the phone, to meet you when you come in, to offer you coffee, juice or water if you have to wait. We also have Trident Title on site, owned by real-estate attorney Paul Krasker, who handles all closings, complications and short sales. He can also answer real-estate legal questions. Our three on-site lenders — Group One, Element Funding and Ideal Lending — prequalify our buyers and close on the mortgage. We’re full-service.”

“I have a 6-year-old grandson who is autistic,” she said. “This market center is behind me 110 percent in supporting the organization. We’ve raised thousands and thousands of dollars and walk in the Autism Speaks annual walk.”

Keller Williams Wellington handles condos, rentals, family-owned homes and equestrian properties as far north

Jennings also has a passion for the Autism Speaks organization.

March 3 is this year’s walk, which takes place annually in downtown West Palm Beach. “Anybody who wants to walk with us, I’d love for them to join us,” she said. Contact Nancy Jennings at (561) 472-1236 or visit the Keller Williams Wellington market center at 12008 South Shore Blvd., Suite 201.

Jennings also sings the praises of the Keller Williams organization. “At Keller Williams, we offer a profitsharing plan as a retirement program for agents,” she explained. “This is something Keller Williams established when they opened their doors back in 1983. It lets agents have ownership. Market center owners share profits with the agents who have helped grow the business. The other thing about Keller Williams: It’s truly an education-based company. We train new and seasoned agents, which is important in the market we’re in today, a market that changes daily. All that training is done free, here. My 100 agents are all professionals. They all know what they’re doing.” |wellington the magazine| February 2013

KAREN WOODS

She Has Given Time & Effort To Vinceremos, Special Olympics And Church Hunger Walks Story by Matthew Auerbach  Photos by Abner Pedraza

For Karen Woods, the act of helping those in need is something she learned firsthand. “As a child, I saw my parents active in church work, drive people to out-of-town doctors, volunteer at the hospital and work at a thrift store run by local churches,” she recalled. “Mom was an excellent baker and always made something for the neighbors when she baked for us. She and dad were always there for their neighbors, and they made our community a better place to live.” Woods has taken their example to heart and is this month’s nominee for Wellington The Magazine’s Volunteer of the Year award. She has made Wellington a better place in which to live by giving of her time and energy to various causes, be it the Special Olympics, churchsponsored hunger walks or her work at the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center. Volunteering brings her a special kind of satisfaction. “There is something wonderfully rewarding about being a part of an effort that makes a difference in someone’s life, a difference in the world,” Woods said. “I feel at my best when I help others overcome barriers in their lives.” A resident of Wellington for 13 years, she began her volunteerism in South America. “After college, I joined the Peace Corps and went to Venezuela for

three years,” she said. “The Peace Corps taught me that people need a person’s time and a chance to work together more than money. Upon returning from the Peace Corps in 1974, I worked in a sheltered workshop in Ohio where I was first introduced to Special Olympics. Coaches from our four-county area worked together at a grassroots level to start the program.”

education in public schools. I received my master’s degree in mentally handicapped education from Nova Southeastern University in 1994 and taught in a classroom setting in Western Pines Middle School until I retired in 2011.”

When there was an opening for a physical education teacher at a local school for students with special needs, Woods applied for the position and got the job. It was during this time that she met the sports and training director for Special Olympics International.

“In my teaching profession, I worked daily with students with mental handicaps,” Woods said. “Teaching students with ‘different abilities’ has shown me that these students have so much to offer when given a chance. I learned to never put limits on them as to what you think is possible. You must let them be. It is important to be positive. How wonderful to see them make eye contact, give me a high five, wave hello or speak for the first time.”

“On an invitation from the Kennedy Foundation, I started Special Olympics there in 1980,” she said. “I met the sports and training director for Special Olympics International at a coaches conference a year or so before. [Special Olympics founder] Eunice Shriver needed someone to go to Venezuela to start Special Olympics there. He told her about me, and I wound up going back to Venezuela and heading up the organization through 1985.” That was the year Woods made her way to Florida. “I actually moved north to Florida from Venezuela in 1985,” Woods said. “After a year of teaching Spanish at a private school outside of Tallahassee, I completed the paperwork to get a job teaching adaptive physical

Her time in class only strengthened her belief in the power of volunteerism.

Woods’ work at Vinceremos also provides a special connection to her younger years. “As a child, I loved horses and used to pick the best clovers for the neighbor’s horses and hang out around the barn, pretending the horses were mine,” she said. “Vinceremos gives me a chance to not only relive this childhood fantasy, but to care for horses and assist riders in their lessons, perhaps leading the horse or walking beside the rider to give more assistance.” It didn’t take long for Woods to become part of the Vinceremos

wellington volunteer family. “A student in my first class at Western Pines took therapeutic riding lessons at Vinceremos,” Woods said. “She invited me to her Special Olympics horse show. I found out that everyone but the instructor/director were volunteers. I was hooked and started going over two days a week after school to volunteer. Later, I was able to take my students for lessons during the school day. It was a great communitybased instruction activity. I really love the opportunity to help the riders have a positive experience on horseback. One of my students started to talk on horseback. With another, I saw her posture and endurance improve tremendously.” Woods has done just about everything there is to do at Vinceremos. “My jobs have included barn chores, grooming and bathing horses, lesson assistance for lead or sidewalk riders,

auction and special event help, and chaperoning for Special Olympics,” Woods said. “I love the chance to work with the young volunteers; they are so full of life and have much to offer. Over the years, many riders and their parents have become friends.” Woods was recognized as Vinceremos’ “Volunteer of the Year” in 2009. She looks at volunteerism as a way of putting her Christian faith into action. “Every church I have been a member of, I have been involved with their missions outreach,” she said. “In Tallahassee, I directed an annual road race that benefited a social service agency. I worked with our congregation to build a Habitat for Humanity house from groundbreaking to dedication. I organized the CROPWALK: Western Communities Hunger Walk for many years. Right now, I assist with the hospitality ministry at St. Peter’s United

Methodist Church. I also volunteer one morning at the C.R.O.S. (Christians Reaching Out to Society) Food Pantry in Lake Worth with members from our congregation.” In Miami, Church World Service contacted Woods to put on the hunger walks to benefit local food pantries. She received an unexpected honor due to this involvement. “I was one of 45 Community Heroes in Miami chosen to carry the Olympic flame in the Torch Relay for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics for putting on the hunger walks,” she recalled. For Woods, the most precious gifts she gets from volunteering are intangible. “You get a chance to meet new people and learn new skills or use skills you already have to assist where needed,” she said. “It’s a super-good feeling to know you’ve helped to make a

wellington volunteer difference. It gives you something to look forward to. It’s an opportunity to do something that someone else would have to do if you didn’t do it. Most importantly, it’s a chance to lend a hand.” She sees a commitment to volunteering as a way to build character. “Effective volunteers complete any required training,” Woods said. “They follow directions and make sure they understand what is expected, asking questions. When in doubt, they seek clarification. They are consistent with their schedule so those in charge can plan ahead. There’s no doubt the experience will enhance your life.” “What is spent is gone, what I kept is lost, but what I gave to charity will be mine forever.” Woods keeps those words close to her heart. So is the belief that everyone reaps the benefits from volunteering. “I think it is important to put compassion in action and give something back to the many ‘communities’ in our lives,” Woods said. “I really like to see people feel supported and good about themselves. Select From A Wide Variety Of Tasty Food Choices At Welli Deli Story by Lauren Miró  Photos by Abner Pedraza

At Welli Deli, variety truly is the spice of life. Whether you’re looking for a stacked sandwich, stuffed burrito or mouth-watering steak, Welli Deli offers so much more than the typical American deli. “The name is deceiving sometimes,” Manager Kate Perez said. “We’re not just a deli.”

guests can choose to sit under the pergola outside, surrounded by beautiful flowers. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, but with an upscale elegance that sets Welli Deli apart from a casual grab-andgo restaurant. From the lounge to the beautiful outdoor patio, it’s an environment that beckons you to sit and stay a while.

Though you can certainly find deli classics, from sandwiches piled high with Boars Head meats to coffee, pastries and more, Welli Deli goes above and beyond to meet the needs of the community. “The idea was to have a place where you can go and get a salad, your husband can get a Philly and your kid can get yogurt,” Perez said. “There’s no place like it.” The location, conveniently nestled at the gateway to Wellington’s equestrian community, means show-goers and residents have a one-stop shop for a wide selection of food choices. It is truly a place that all of Wellington can enjoy, not just equestrians. “There are very few places to eat on this side of town,” Perez said. “And there’s no place anywhere in Wellington with this kind of variety.” Since its opening in October, the place has become a local favorite, especially considering it’s right off the bridle trail, meaning people can easily stop in during a ride. “People ride up on horseback, they come on golf carts, they scooter up,” Perez said. Walking in, you can easily see how much there is to offer. Welli Deli is set up like a deli, with several “stations” from which to order — one for food, one for coffee and pastries, and even a self-serve frozen yogurt station.

(Above) Manager Kate Perez with Head Chef Chris Aracri. (Below) The self-serve frozen yogurt station at Welli Deli.

There are also big, bright coolers filled with a vast selection of drinks, and even some pre-made snacks, salads and other items for those in a hurry. There is plenty of seating, from tables to high tops and even a lounge with couches by a television, or |wellington the magazine| February 2013

wellington table Welli Deli offers free Wi-Fi, and the prevalence of outlets throughout the restaurant means it’s a great place to sit and work, or to have a business meeting while enjoying some great food. Customers can also enjoy a variety of beer and wine, and with extended hours until 11 p.m., Welli Deli is a great place to unwind with friends over a drink and a good meal. “It’s very much a place where people can come and relax with friends after work,” Perez said. But the food is truly what will keep people coming back again and again. “Everything is made in-house and to order,” Perez said. It is a restaurant wrapped in a deli setting, and Welli Deli does both well — delicious meals and classic deli combos. They are also conscious of dietary restrictions, offering alternatives for those who may need to watch what they eat. “Depending on your circumstances or

situation, there will be something here you can have,” Perez said. She pointed to the frozen yogurt, which boasts nearly all no-fat or low-fat flavors, as well as no-sugar-added, gluten-free and non-dairy flavors. And for coffee lovers, there are a variety of milk options, including soy and almond milk. “We know it’s becoming more common that people are learning what they can and can’t eat,” Perez said. “We want everyone to be able to find something they can eat.” Welli Deli serves breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. every day, offering full meals or quicker options like bagels and coffee. For a delicious and filling option, try the French Toast Breakfast. Two thick-cut pieces of bread covered in delicious syrup and topped with fresh berries. You can have it with breakfast meat like ham, sausage or bacon, and of course eggs cooked to perfection. If you’re in for lunch, try the Turkey Day, a stacked sandwich that is reminiscent of Thanksgiving with

family. The fresh-cut turkey is piled high and topped with stuffing and a cranberry spread that makes this dish sing. In the mood for a salad? Try the Greek salad. Topped with sliced chicken breast, the salad boasts chunks of fresh feta cheese, Greek olives, tomatoes and more, all dressed in a zesty and refreshing dressing. What makes Welli Deli truly unique is that it offers more than just sandwiches and salads, and the New York Strip is evidence of this. Big and juicy, the steak is coated with mushrooms and onions and topped with Gouda cheese for a truly mouth-watering dish, served with an overstuffed baked potato to round out the meal. No matter what you choose, you’re in for a pleasant surprise at Welli Deli. Welli Deli, located at 13501 South Shore Blvd., is open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends during the season. For more information, visit www.wellideli.com or call (561) 784-5884.

The staff at Welli Deli invites you to visit the new eatery, located in the heart of Wellington’s equestrian area.
