Exciting Equestrian Action Takes Center Stage At The 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival In Wellington

On our cover this month is Olympic medalist Kent Farrington, the world’s No. 1 show jumper, who returns to action in Wellington with many of the same horses that shined so brightly last year, while also introducing new, younger horses into the competition. We spoke to Farrington and learned about his philanthropic, humanitarian side. Our annual Faces of WEF section highlights some of the world’s top riders as they prepare to qualify and represent their countries at September’s World Equestrian Games in North Carolina. Riders travel year after year from all across the globe to take advantage of the warm weather, the challenging jumping courses and the opportunities to win the competitive prize money here in Wellington. Along with spectacular athletes and breathtaking horses, there is so much to do and see at the Winter Equestrian Festival, including many activities outside of the show ring. From shopping and casual dining, to exhilarating entertainment and educational opportunities, WEF offers a unique experience for all those who come to visit. This issue features an overview of all there is to see and do at the showgrounds. Each Saturday evening, the stadium lights come on, the crowds come out and the jumps get bigger for the featured event of the week, Saturday Night Lights. The competitions begin at 7 p.m., but the gates open at 6 p.m., with a multitude of activities for the whole family to enjoy before the first rider enters the ring. WEF is an exciting time for Wellington, but nothing tops the philanthropic aspect. The ninth annual Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3. Dozens of Palm Beach County charities will compete to receive a share of the $1.5 million purse during the exciting pro-am jumping competition. Wellington’s Gochman family has made some big strides of success, both in and out of the arena. In 2012, Becky and David Gochman put a name to their family’s passion and dubbed the fruits of their equestrian labor Baxter Hill. The farm, established as a haven for their daughters and their many happy horses, sits upon 12 acres in Grand Prix Village. Also featured this month is Jhaleh Jiveh, who recently opened Zoia Yoga & Wellness featuring heated Vinyasa yoga classes, as well as equestrian power couple Bastian Schroeder and Margot Peroni, who discuss their new venture, EquiJet. Wellington Professional this month chats with attorney Mickey Smith of Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, who enjoys helping people and serving the community. Wellington Senior profiles Katarina Evangelista, who explains how her volunteer work helps her stay young at heart. Wellington Real Estate features Mary Miller of Illustrated Properties, who brings clients a lifetime of experience in the Wellington area. Wellington Health stopped by for a checkup with Dr. Pedro Sanchez of MDVIP, who offers a concierge approach to healthcare. Wellington Home rings the bell of the newly remodeled, transitional style home in Oakmont Estates. Finally, Wellington Table visits the new Polo Bar & Grill, which offers a nostalgic nod to vintage Wellington while serving up a delicious menu. We want to thank the many loyal advertisers and partnerships that it takes to put together another information-packed Faces of WEF issue. Hope to see you and your family out there this season!

No. 1 Show Jumper Kent Farrington Keeps His Focus On The Future By Y.A. Teitelbaum

While Hurricane Irma barreled through Florida last September, U.S. Olympian Kent Farrington, the world’s No. 1 show jumper, was in Calgary competing in one of the sport’s most prestigious horse shows. But he was watching the news and hoping for the best. Fortunately, Farrington’s 13-acre training facility in Wellington did not sustain any damage from the powerful storm. But he saw the destruction elsewhere, and it moved him to action. He decided to donate his earnings from the Rolex Central Park Horse Show in New York City two weeks later to Direct Relief, a nonprofit humanitarian aid fund. His donation: the entire firstplace prize of $71,280. “I feel very fortunate to have the career that I have,” said Farrington, who earned a silver medal as part of the U.S. team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. “I have a great team of people around me who have helped me get to where I am today and continue to help me grow further. I wanted to help the people less fortunate than myself from the hurricane, and it was my way of being able to give back. It’s the right thing to do, and it feels great to help. Part of the thrill of succeeding is being able to do things that can have an impact and make a difference.” Helping others is not a one-time thing for Farrington, who turned 37 on Dec. 28. He is a national ambassador for Autism Speaks, in honor of a family friend who has autism. Farrington also advocates for the United States Pony Club, which is where he first learned to ride while growing up in Chicago. “That’s where I started, and it’s humbling to give back to the organization that helped me,” Farrington said. “They’re a grassroots organization where you learn basic horse riding skills. I like the energy of the kids there.” Farrington helps the Pony Club in several ways, including having a contest where the winner and their

family receive a trip to Wellington where they tour his facility and follow him while he is competing at the Winter Equestrian Festival. Veteran rider Jimmy Torano has known Farrington since he was coming up in the junior ranks. He wasn’t surprised by Farrington’s generosity. “He’s a very generous person,” Torano said. “We saw that when he donated his winnings from the Central Park Grand Prix to hurricane victims. He’s great with his friends and all the people around him.” Farrington was very, very good in 2017, winning more than 12 Grand Prixes around the world, including several major competitions at WEF, en route to the No. 1 world ranking, which he has held for the last nine months. He returns to action in the 2018 season in Wellington with many of the same horses that shined so brightly last year, including Gazelle, a 12-year-old bay mare, and Creedance, an 11-year-old chestnut gelding. But he will also introduce some new, younger horses into the competitions at WEF. “My goal is to have a broad view, to produce future stars while resting some of the older horses,” Farrington said. “Wellington is a great spot, since we are here for a long time. I get to spend a lot of time with my younger horses.” Torano has always been impressed with Farrington’s riding. “I actually met him in what they used to call the $5 ring, when he was back there schooling some horses, as a kid,” Torano said. “He was impressive even back then. I always say Kent is a genius. He’s extremely smart in every way. I think that’s why he is where he is today.

He puts it all to use in his training, and he obviously has an unbelievable program.” Beyond horses, Torano likes spending time with Farrington. “On a personal level, he’s one of the funniest people you’ll ever meet,” he said. “One of the best guys to just hang out with, whether it’s just sitting around the table discussing training of the horses, or going out for a fun dinner.” Farrington’s training methods seem simple enough. “Get and keep the horses really fit, manage their schedule so they don’t

over-compete and have a big team so there’s not all the pressure on one horse,” Farrington said. Each horse is ridden and trained as an individual. One might be better indoors, another performs best on a large, grass field. “There’s a lot of management and attention to details that go into it,” Farrington said. “It’s super complicated. It’s like a Formula One driver — you don’t just turn on the key and drive it like it’s a Ford Taurus.” Farrington trains hard himself, exercising daily but eschewing weights to concentrate on flexibility and balance.

He also follows a super-clean eating program, meaning no sugar or processed food, and has a chef prepare his meals. Farrington said he always trained and enjoyed it, and over time his eating habits changed as he learned more and more. “My father died of cancer when I was young, and an experience like that pushed me in a different direction, and eating healthy was part of it,” Farrington said. Farrington follows other major sports and enjoys watching other elite athletes competing. He was drawn to basketball, Kent Farrington aboard Creedance at the Winter Equestrian Festival. “My confidence comes from methodical training, being well prepared, knowing that I have practiced over and over,” Kent Farrington said. with Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls dominating his childhood years. “He [Jordan] was a dynamic figure to watch,” Farrington said. “I can appreciate any sport at the highest level. I just like watching great competition. I know the dedication they have put into it.” Many athletes are superstitious, but not Farrington. He doesn’t have a pair of good-luck socks or eat the same meal before each competition.

“My confidence comes from methodical training, being well prepared, knowing that I have practiced over and over,” Farrington said. “I think that’s more effective than a lucky pair of socks.” Torano doesn’t believe that being No. 1 in the world has changed Farrington. “His philosophy has always been to develop the young horses and get them

to the Grand Prix or championship level,” Torano said. “I don’t think that will change. I think being No. 1 was always part of the plan, so I don’t think we’ll see a big change in him.” That’s because he’s passionate about working with the horses. “They’re amazing animals,” Farrington said. “It’s really gratifying.” To learn more about Kent Farrington, visit www.kentfarrington.com.

SAMUEL PAROT

SAMUEL PAROT Samuel Parot has a quiet presence at the shows. A well-liked and well-respected individual by his fellow riders, the 53-year-old Chilean based in Wellington has become a dominant player on the circuit. He has competed at the top in Europe, Spruce Meadows, as well as on the Longines North American League World Cup Qualifying circuit. In 2017, all just in February at the Winter Equestrian Festival, he won the CSI4* riding Dazzle White, the CSI3* riding Couscous Van Orti, the CSI3* aboard Atlantis, then the huge CSI5* riding Quick Du Pottier — then again, the CSI5* riding Couscous Van Orti. In March, he won the CSI4* Grand Prix aboard Atlantis and the CSI4* riding Quick Du Pottier. When he traveled with his horses to Europe in July to ride at the Aachen, Germany show jumping CSIO5*, he placed third riding Atlantis, and he also placed third in the Aachen CSIO5* riding Quick Du Pottier. Upon his return to the United States, he won the Lexington CSI3* on Quick Du Pottier and the Lexington CSI3* riding Atlantis, with even more wins in Canada and Tryon. A dominant rider on the course, Parot will be one to watch as he prepares to qualify for the 2018 World Equestrian Games.

SCOTT STEWART

SCOTT STEWART One of America’s leading hunter riders, Scott Stewart has time and again shown his talent and brilliance in the hunter ring. In 2017, Stewart and his mount Catch Me claimed their second consecutive $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular win in Wellington. In the 20-year history of the WCHR and his long-running and decorated career, Stewart never made it onto the roster of winners, until 2016. He had competed in the class almost every year since its beginning, and the winning prize had eluded him. In 2017, at the prestigious horse show at Devon, he earned the Devon Leading Hunter Rider award. At the Capital Challenge Horse Show, he was also recognized with the best hunter horses and riders in the country at the Prince George’s Equestrian Center in Maryland. Then Stewart and Lucador won Leading Hunter Rider, Grand Champion Professional Hunter and won at the 2017 Lexington CP National Horse Show. Stewart grew up in Norwalk, Conn., and competed in the equitation and Medal/ Maclay Finals, making it into the final group twice. He has ridden jumpers, taught the up-and-coming equitation riders to the finals and placed at the top in the hunter classes with victories year after year.

MCLAIN WARD

MCLAIN WARD Whether it’s Wellington, the Olympics or the World Equestrian Games, McLain Ward is well-prepared for the challenge. Ward utilizes WEF each year as part of his strategy to win the big championships. Last year, he took a full sweep of victories in four days of high-pressure competition in Omaha at the Longines FEI World Cup CSI-W Final Championships riding HH Azur. He completed the week with no penalties after five rounds of jumping, one rail ahead of the second-place rider. At his 17 appearances at the World Cup finals, the highest Ward had ever placed before was second. He went on to rank No. 1 in the Longines FEI world rankings for the first time. He stayed at the top through June 2017, until fellow U.S. rider Kent Farrington took over, leaving Ward the No. 2 rider in the world. It was the first time two Americans stood at the top of the world rankings. Last year, he won two North Salem competitions riding HH Carlos Z. He won at Devon riding Rothchild, then took two CSI5* competitions at Spruce Meadows riding HH Callas, two CSI5* classes riding Tina La Boheme and three riding HH Carlos Z. The momentum continued in Europe with a big win at Aachen. A talented rider, Ward is a dominant force to watch.

LUCY DESLAURIERS

LUCY DESLAURIERS At only 18 years old, Lucy Deslauriers regularly competes on the big stage against the best riders in the world. Deslauriers has grown up with big ambitions. Her father, Canadian Olympian Mario Deslauriers, also found success at a young age. He still holds the record as the youngest rider in history to win the FEI World Cup Final. These days, he waits anxiously near the in-gate whistling in encouragement. In 2017, Deslauriers had her biggest win to date during Week 8 of the Winter Equestrian Festival in the 1.50-meter $100,000 Suncoast Jumper Classic CSIO4*. Of the field of 49, she had a fault-free finish to the top of the leaderboard. Often one of the youngest riders in her class, Deslauriers is not intimidated by age differences. She also won the 2015 George Morris Excellence in Equitation Award at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. In 2016, she was awarded the Lionel Guerrand- Hermès Trophy by the United States Equestrian Team. The award is for young riders who exemplify both sportsmanship and horsemanship. In 2017, she had victories riding Hester in Wellington, Spruce Meadows, North Salem and more. As her relationship with Hestor continues, Deslauriers looks forward to more victories.

Exciting Equestrian Action Takes Center Stage At PBIEC During The 2018

Winter Equestrian Festival

World-class equestrian sport has returned to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center this winter for the 12-week Winter Equestrian Festival, which opened Jan. 10 and continues until April 1. With more than 70 divisions of hunter-jumper competition featuring everything from short-stirrup up to Olympic-level show jumping, WEF is the premier winter equestrian destination for many of the world’s best horses and riders. Managed by Equestrian Sport Productions, WEF is the largest and longest-running equestrian festival in the world, with more than 7,000 horses competing throughout the winter circuit. The managing partners of WEF also run the Tryon International Equestrian Center in North Carolina, which hosts international events throughout the year, and will host the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games from Sept. 11 through Sept. 23. The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center has long been recognized as one of the finest equestrian venues in the world. Each winter, riders from 33 countries and all 50 U.S. states travel to Wellington to compete there. The venue covers 500 acres, with 80 acres of competition rings alone. Over the course of the 12-week circuit, more than 6,500 horses will descend upon the venue and host more than 100 divisions for professionals, amateurs, juniors and children. “Each year, we see the Winter Equestrian Festival grow in the number of exhibitors and in competition opportunities, and we feel that is a great sign as to where equestrian sport is going in terms of mainstream exposure,” said Mark Bellissimo, CEO of Equestrian Sport Productions and managing partner of Wellington Equestrian Partners. “It has been our goal to bring these talented riders and athletes, and this unbelievable sport, to a larger audience, and are committed to doing so long term as we look toward the future of WEF and PBIEC.” The four CSI 5* Grand Prix classes, the highest designation of international show jumping in the sport, will take place on Feb. 10 (WEF 5), Feb. 24 (WEF 7), March 10 (WEF 9) and March 31 (WEF 12) in the International Ring at PBIEC. These competitions feature the top horse and rider combinations in the world, and include four FEI World Ranking classes during each week. The final CSI 5* competition of the circuit is in WEF 12, when PBIEC hosts the $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*, the most prestigious international class of the 2018 season. This year, the $500,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI

The winning team will present more than $150,000 to their paired charity, while all participating charities receive at least $15,000. Winter Equestrian Festival

Winter Equestrian Festival Continues To Boast Impressive Sponsorship Portfolio

The Winter Equestrian Festival has revolutionized equestrian sport in South Florida, bringing major brands and business to support the largest and longest-running horse show in the world, while providing riders the opportunity to compete in some of the sport’s biggest classes. A major component of the continued success of the Winter Equestrian Festival is its dedicated sponsors. Sponsorship at the Winter Equestrian Festival helps give businesses, partners, corporations and brands a platform to deliver their messaging and products to the forefront of a collective audience for an entire 12 weeks. The opportunity is grand, but better is the benefit of sponsorship for the exhibitors, riders and athletes competing at the show.

Without the continued and dedicated efforts of sponsors, class sizes and numbers would decrease and the stature of classes at the competition would also falter. Yet, over the past 10 years, sponsorship at PBIEC has nearly tripled, welcoming nearly 60 sponsors for 2018. “Sponsorship is a key component of the success and growth of equestrian

sport, not just here at WEF, but around the world,” said Katherine Bellissimo, chief marketing officer and director of sponsorship for PBIEC. “Our sponsors and their continued support make the WEF season possible. Winter Equestrian Festival

The Winter Equestrian Festival is the largest and longest-running circuit in the horse sport industry. The 12-week schedule offers a variety of competition for all ages and experience levels in the hunter, jumper and equitation divisions. Beginning in January and concluding in April, WEF sees riders from more than 40 countries and all 50 U.S. states, competing for nearly $10 million in prize money. Simply put, there is a reason that it has been named the world’s premier winter equestrian event.

But WEF is not just an exceptional competition hub. It also provides many activities outside of the show ring throughout its 12 weeks. From shopping and casual dining, to exhilarating entertainment and educational opportunities, WEF offers a unique experience for all those who come to visit. Looking to purchase a new outfit for your night out on the town? Hoping to find the perfect birthday present for your nonequestrian boyfriend? Maybe you just need a new pair of boot socks. Whatever you are searching for, you’ll find it within the WEF shopping boutiques. More than 100 vendors occupy the show grounds each week, offering a wide variety of products, styles and sizes, spread across several locations at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Vendor Village hosts the majority of vendors in the center of the grounds. Be sure to also check out the boutiques located by the International Arena. Both areas have shopping that caters to equestrian and non-equestrian needs and range from luxury products to inexpensive merchandise. For those looking to commemorate their visit to the show grounds, the WEF Boutique offers clothing, posters and souvenirs with the popular WEF logo. wellington the magazine | february 2018

In addition to a multitude of shopping opportunities, WEF also has an abundance of food and drink options. If you are searching for a quick bite during the day, visit one of the on-site vendors offering everything from burgers and fries to salads and wraps. A few fan favorites include Tito’s Tacos, a Mexican-style eatery with tacos, burritos, chips and salsa, and of course, margaritas. Another is the popular Oasis Café, located in Vendor Village. Oasis Café offers an assortment of fresh and light meals that can be ordered on-site or ahead of time by phone. Guests can also sit down at the Tiki Hut to eat a delicious meal while overlooking competition in the International Arena. The Tiki Hut menu includes a variety of burgers and sandwiches, customized salads, grilled chicken and fish, and more. If you are looking for a more upscale dining experience, try out the White Horse Fashion Cuisine restaurant. Located by the main entrance to the show grounds, White Horse provides the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing and refreshing dinner with a wide range of food and drink choices. No matter what type of food you are craving, there is something for everyone at WEF. Of course, the main attraction at WEF is the high level of show jumping competition. And there is no better night to witness this exhilarating entertainment than on Saturday night. The Saturday Night Lights attraction has become a favorite for both competitors and spectators. Beyond watching the best riders in the world, there are many activities for the whole family to enjoy. Pony rides, petting zoos and stilt-walkers are just a few of the many things you’ll see when you walk through the front gates at WEF on Saturday night, and it is all free to the general public. But Saturday Night Lights is not just for the kids. Adults can have fun at one

Outside of the ring, the Winter Equestrian Festival continues to offer several learning experiences and activities. Come take a tour of the world-renowned facility followed by a catered lunch. Explore all 12 of the competition rings, the stabling area where horses prepare for competition and stroll through Vendor Village. Hosted weekly during WEF, the Lunch & Learn series provides educational platforms for horse enthusiasts to expand their knowledge on a variety of equine-related topics, including management and maintenance, horsemanship and care, as well as emerging technologies and treatment methods available in the equine veterinary industry. Admission is free for riders, trainers and owners, so come check it out while you are in town. Whether staying for the entire 12 weeks of competition, or just passing through for a few days, there is plenty to do at the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival. Winter Equestrian Festival Saturday night is the most popular night of the week at WEF.

What To Do At WEF’s Saturday Night Lights Every Saturday evening during the Winter Equestrian Festival, the stadium lights come on, the crowds come out and the jumps get bigger for the featured event of the week, Saturday Night Lights. Saturday Night Lights competitions begin at 7 p.m., but the gates of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center open at 6 p.m., with a multitude of activities for the whole family to enjoy before the first rider enters the ring. Some of the PBIEC staple activities include free rides on the Venetian carousel, a petting zoo, face painting and live music throughout the night. Occasionally, there are ponies on the grounds, some offering pony rides and others offering adorable photo opportunities with the kids.

There are also a variety of performers in attendance, ranging from jugglers to men on stilts to the beloved bubble man. A number of vendors keep their shops open for browsing during the evening, located around the International Ring. While exploring, spectators glancing into the ring and warm-up areas will be able to catch a glimpse of the riders walking the course, where they can evaluate the jumps and create their plan for the evening prior to mounting their horses. After all the activities, everyone in the family is sure to be able to find some-

thing to eat with the large variety of dining options available. There are many food trucks on site, serving everything from pizza to popcorn to tacos. For those looking for a formal dining experience, White Horse Fashion Cuisine is open, and there are a number of VIP options available. VIP seating options include the Tiki Hut, the Gallery, Beachside, the International Club, the Wellington Club and Central Park. When the trumpet sounds at 7 p.m., the first rider gallops into the arena underneath the iconic bridge to begin the competition. Saturday Night Lights features a Grand Prix competition, in which riders compete over jumps ranging in height from 1.50 to 1.60 meters, and the width can be up to 2.20 meters. petitors are among the best in the world, and it is common to see Olympians and world champions jumping each week. The goal is to leave all the jumps up and stay within the time allowed in the first round, and riders who meet these goals return to go against the clock in round two, the jump-off. The jump-off will have fans holding their breath as riders take risky turns

and speed around a shortened course to determine the winner. When the class is getting close, the ring goes silent as the rider races around, and the crowd erupts into cheers as the timers are broken after a clean round. The winners take to the podium for a celebratory champagne shower before mounting their horses and taking a victory lap around the arena, during which

riders often toss their ribbons to lucky fans in the stands. At the conclusion of the class, the evening continues at the Gallery with an exciting after party, which all guests over age 21 are invited to join and celebrate the evening’s victor. The most rewarding aspect of sharing this “equestrian world with my girls has been to see them love the horses the way that they do. BECKY GOCHMAN

80

february 2018 | wellington the magazine

By Kim Beaudoin

A love of horses was instilled in Becky Gochman at a young age. At eight years old, she sat on her first horse, and from there she spent her youth competing around the New Jersey circuits, as well as in 4-H competitions. That love continued to flourish and as an adult, when Becky took her talents to the competitive hunter ring. Her passion for everything equine was passed down to her daughters, 13-year-old Mimi and 15-year-old Sophie. “The most rewarding aspect of sharing this equestrian world with my girls has been to see them love the horses the way that they do,” Becky said. “They’ve had great instruction, and I feel that through all of that, they’ve really learned to not only be more competent riders, but it also helps them in other walks of life.” In 2012, Becky and David Gochman put a name to their family’s passion and dubbed the fruits of their equestrian labor “Baxter Hill.” The farm, established as a haven for their daughters and their many happy horses, sits upon 12 acres in Grand Prix Village, adjacent to the prestigious Winter Equestrian Festival show grounds. While the three Gochman women are the ones who spend most of their time in the tack, David is an avid supporter of their endeavors.

“David doesn’t ride, but he comes and goes from the show scene,” Becky explained. “He has really seen that the kids learn so much from their successes and their failures through riding that he acknowledges that these are all valuable life lessons. He sees his girls growing through the sport, and because of that he is very supportive. He likes to be part of it and is a great sport about it.” The love and support of their committed parents has truly helped the Gochman daughters champion all of life’s tests thus far. Mimi and Sophie are each talented in their own unique way. “It is a little difficult when you have kids that are so close in age, but the horse gods have made it work out somehow,” Becky joked. “Things are kept pretty even in different ways. One may be a little down, and then they move up. They each have their different strengths. As a mom, you always try to juggle that, but I’m learning that life isn’t always even or fair, and they’re going to have to learn how to deal with that themselves. They’re good friends.

They’ve been able to handle competing against one another, and I think that it’s a great learning experience.” A single piece of advice Becky and David offer their daughters? “Always put your horse first and develop that special bond.” Becky said. “The horsemanship aspect is invaluable. I’m always like, ‘Did you bring carrots? Did you spend one-on-one time with your horse?’ It can get really crazy as they move up in levels. You don’t always have a lot of time because of competing, and balancing that with other things, like school and friends. Your mind must always be open and aware of the limitless possibilities that this sport has to teach. Go with it, have fun and smile.” As her daughters grow and continue to thrive, Becky is taking a small step back from her own lengthy competition schedule. This season, the Gochman

family is excited to introduce Farm Stand to the Winter Equestrian Festival community. The experience is like none other that WEF has seen before and will offer a unique spread of healthy food, products and services that focus on the positive mind, body and spirit of the equestrian athlete. “I’m getting older, and my kids are getting bigger,” Becky said. “I want to do the horses, but maybe not show the same way that I was. I want to slow my riding down a little bit. This Farm Stand concept was a good transition to focus on giving back to the community and doing something within the community that I’m very passionate about and interested in.” The idea was established after Becky came to the realization that young people are taking control of their lifestyle choices, and more often than not, are

looking for healthier options when it comes to the products they use and the food they consume. “I’ve always been interested in good-tasting, healthy food. It has really changed my lifestyle, and I thought it’d be great if we could share some of that,” Becky said. “At Baxter Hill, we’ve put in a thriving organic garden. From that thought, we asked ourselves, ‘How can we bring some of this to the horse show?’ While you can’t grow your own food at WEF, we thought, ‘Let’s bring our own food trucks in.’ It was just a dream, and now it is really coming to reality. That’s very exciting for us.” With the season now underway, there is no doubt that 2018 will see the Gochman family make some big strides of success, both in and out of the arena. GREAT CHARITY CHALLENGE Helps Many Nonprofits Across Palm Beach County All Year Long The ninth annual Great Charity Challenge, presented by Fidelity Investments, will be held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center on Saturday, Feb. 3. Dozens of Palm Beach County charities will compete to receive a share of the $1.5 million purse during the exciting pro-am jumping competition held during the popular Saturday Night Lights series at the Winter Equestrian Festival. The Great Charity Challenge, founded in 2010 by Mark and Katherine Bellissimo of Equestrian Sport Productions, and their daughter Paige, has distributed more than $10.8 million from the equestrian community to 220 local nonprofits. All of the money raised gets distrib-

uted in one evening every year, with first place receiving $150,000 and all participating charities being guaranteed a minimum of $15,000. While the public excitement takes place one day of the year, that money is put to work year-round at the dozens of charities that receive a slice of the winnings. The Kids Cancer Foundation has received more than $200,000 from the Great Charity Challenge, having been lucky enough to participate at the event

three times, including taking third place in 2016. KCF has also been selected for the 2018 event, which means a guaranteed minimum of $15,000 in additional support. The nonprofit’s mission is to provide hope and support to children and families in Palm Beach County battling childhood cancer. It currently provides assistance to more than 450 families. When children are diagnosed with cancer, their life immediately changes. Instead of school, playgrounds and parties, their new reality is chemotherapy, doctor visits and hospital stays. The effect on the entire family is dramatic — and often, traumatic.

Doctors and nurses provide the medical care, but families need more in order to get through this stressful and terrifying time. The Kids Cancer Foundation provides comprehensive and easily accessible supportive care services. The nonprofit works to educate families about their child’s diagnosis and treatment, providing physical, emotional and financial support throughout the difficult journey. There are approximately 15,780 new cases of pediatric cancer diagnosed in the United States each year. The work done by the Kids Cancer Foundation has been shown to increase both a child’s quality of life and chance of survival. “One of our most recent success stories is Emma and her single mother, Ashley,” said Michelle O’Boyle, KCF’s founder and executive director. “Emma is only 7 years old and has faced more in

this past year than any of us might face in a lifetime. Not only has Emma had to deal with her parents’ separation and losing her home, but she is now battling Pre B Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia and is facing two and a half years of countless doctor appointments and hospital visits.” Naturally, the emotional and financial toll that Emma’s health has had on this family is devastating, but the Kids Cancer Foundation has been able to provide the financial and emotional support Emma and her family need during this difficult time. “They now have a small apartment close to the hospital, and Emma’s mother has been able to re-enroll in school to complete her nursing degree, so she will be able to financially support herself and her three precious daughters,” O’Boyle said. helps families who have children with lifelong physical disabilities, won $125,000 for taking second place at the 2016 Great Charity Challenge. Bella’s Angels assists families with children’s medical expenses that insurance doesn’t cover. “Our reach to pay medical expenses increased, but we were also able to take on additional families as a result of receiving these funds,” Deborah Jaffe of Bella’s Angels said. “We also assisted families with expenses related to specialized therapy and conference expenses specific to their child’s disabilities. In addition, a small amount was to assist families with respite care, giving them the opportunity to take care of their own needs.” An example of Bella’s Angels’ work resides in MacKenzie, one of 400 youngsters in the world with the rare genetic disorder Tetrasomy 18. “She and her mother attended a conference in Dallas with the best of the best doctors in this field,” Jaffe said. “As a re-

sult, they met other families — there is no one else in our area diagnosed with this disorder — and MacKenzie is now participating in a medical trial so [researchers] can learn more about the genetic disorder and help children like MacKenzie. This has been tremendous for her and her family.” In 2017, Adopt-A-Family of the Palm Beaches was one of the Great Charity Challenge’s big winners, taking second place and winning $125,000, plus an additional $5,000 from the Zeigler Family Foundation, in what started out as a wildcard spot. Since 2014, Adopt-A-Family has received $240,000 in support from the GCC. Adopt-A-Family is dedicated to strengthening families with children in their efforts to achieve stability and self-sufficiency by providing access to allencompassing services. The money from last year’s GCC enabled the agency to make significant strides in three areas.

First, the award enhanced Project Grow, the agency’s afterschool program for homeless and impoverished elementary school students by covering the cost of classroom supplies, nutritious daily snacks, camp t-shirts and field trips. Second, Adopt-A-Family increased its effectiveness through administrative infrastructure improvements, including IT upgrades, new accounting software, a web-based phone system and staff training. Finally, the nonprofit increased its capacity by investing GCC funds in the agency’s newest project, Third Street Homes, a 14-unit affordable housing program for families at imminent risk of homelessness. The money enabled the agency to complete the demolition of the deteriorated structures on the property and hire a program manager and architect. Martha Jolicoeur Honors The Women Of Horse Sport At WEF By Lindsay Brock

When Wellington-based equestrian real estate broker Martha W. Jolicoeur looks back on her own time in the show jumping competition ring, her favorite award to win was the Leading Lady Rider Award, in a sport that makes no distinction between male and female athletes. Men and women compete alongside each other at exactly the same level in equestrian sport — one of the only Olympic disciplines where such a phenomenon exists. To that end, Jolicoeur has dedicated a portion of her support of the Winter Equestrian Festival to showcase women who strive for and achieve success at one of the most competitive show circuits in the world. For the eighth consecutive season, she will present the Martha Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award each

week of WEF, running through April 1 at Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. “Wellington attracts some of the best riders in the world, and for me, as a rider and a sponsor of WEF, that is really exciting,” said Jolicoeur, who is a part of the elite Douglas Elliman Real Estate sports and entertainment division. “When I was competing, one of my biggest goals was to try and earn leading lady rider accolades, and I have enjoyed providing recognition to women who

achieve that honor at WEF. I love meeting these athletes and helping them to feel accomplished within a pool of superb riders and horses.” Jolicoeur will present the weekly Martha Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award, given in memory of fellow Realtor and horsewoman Dale Lawler, to the high-score female rider based on performances in the weekly WEF Challenge Cup Series and Grand Prix events. In addition, the cumulative highest scoring female rider will be presented with the Overall WEF Leading Lady Rider Award at the completion of the festival. In addition to presenting the rider award, Jolicoeur is the title sponsor of the Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jump-

er division throughout WEF. The division consists of three jumping events each week, including the $10,000 Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic held each Sunday. “I think it is really important to draw attention to the fact that the equalizing factor in horse sport is the horse, and Wellington is a prime example of how horses bring us all together,” said Jolicoeur, who competed around the world as a show jumping competitor. “Welling-

ton offers an equestrian lifestyle that is not found just anywhere. Everyone here speaks the same language, and that language is horse. Whether you’re a judge at the show, a groom in one of the barns or an equestrian Realtor, we all have a common bond in the athleticism, beauty and welfare of horses.” A top Wellington broker for home and farm real estate, Jolicoeur has been a steadfast sponsor of WEF since 2010 and has been serving the surrounding

communities as a dedicated broker since 2005. However, her support of the booming equestrian industry in Wellington has existed for decades. Originally from the northeast, Jolicoeur officially relocated to Wellington in 2005, but her introduction to the winter equestrian capital of the world occurred much earlier. She began riding in Westport, Conn., and commenced her annual pilgrimages south in 1979, falling in love with Wellington as a junior rider. Jolicoeur’s career in the saddle began with many titles on her small junior hunter, Movie Star, including winning the Best Child Rider Award at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show and numerous circuit championships at WEF. She continued climbing the ranks to train at the Grand Prix level with Canadian Olympian Ian Millar and U.S. Olympian Norman Dello Joio and, in 1985, Jolicoeur was named the American Grand Prix Association Rookie of the Year. horseman George Morris, she had the opportunity to travel the world, making a name for herself at competitions in England, Holland and Belgium. Jolicoeur’s experience in the ring segued into a career in equestrian real estate when she earned her license in 1991. Serving another location steeped in equestrian tradition, she started her real estate endeavors in Middleburg, Va., before answering the call to return to Wellington full-time. Since then, she has watched the evolution of Wellington’s equestrian community transform and flourish with each passing season. “Wellington and the Winter Equestrian Festival have equipped me with unique opportunities to help buyers and sellers find their own piece of horse heaven,” Jolicoeur said. “It is an honor to be involved with the Winter Equestrian Festival and to interact with some of the world’s top show jumping athletes, trainers and owners looking to sell a property or find a place to call their own in Wellington.”

Jolicoeur’s real estate business caters exclusively to equestrian clientele. “I have found my calling,” she said. “I feel the same passion and joy for helping my clients buy and sell properties as I did when I was competing in the show ring.” It is a role she is uniquely qualified to fill after decades in the industry. “I am a horsewoman,” Jolicoeur said. “I understand what equestrian clients need and want for their horses and their

families. That understanding, as well as my involvement with equestrian events like the Winter Equestrian Festival, puts me in front of a very specific audience, but it is an audience that speaks my language and looks to me to help them make Wellington home.” To find out more about Jolicoeur and her range of property listings, visit www.marthasproperties.com. Heated Vinyasa Yoga Classes And More At New YO G A & W E L L N ES S

Studio

Story by Jack Lowenstein

• Photos by Abner Pedraza

Zoia Yoga & Wellness recently opened in the Kobosko’s Crossing shopping plaza in Wellington. The boutique yoga studio offers heated vinyasa yoga classes for all levels of experience. Owner Jhaleh Jiveh opened her studio two months ago, wanting to provide the local community with an added experience to a popular style of yoga in a small-classroom setting. Zoia’s studio is custom engineered with infrared heating technology, set to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Jiveh believes the heat enhances the benefits that yoga can offer her clients. “I’m a registered nurse, and I’ve always been a big believer of holistic health,” Jiveh said. “Being in a different health system in Canada, and coming here, working in the U.S. health system, my passion is really selfhealth, taking care of yourself before you get sick.” The infrared panels act more like a sauna, rather than how Floridians know a hot summer day may treat them. The heat is fully controlled and is designed to enhance the yoga experiences without comprising comfortability. “The infrared are high-end infrared panels, custom engineered to the room, where the room is a nice healing heat,” (Left) Master yogi Cat Cabot with Zoia Yoga & Wellness owner Jhaleh Jiveh.

Jiveh said. “You don’t walk into a wall of hot air. It’s nice heat. There are no cold spots. It’s a nice, even heat all along.” Among the different benefits that the heated sessions can provide is reduction of stress and fatigue. Jiveh said that it can even help improve the immune system. “Heat helps to move your body to stretch deeper, and also there have been studies shown that it burns more calories under the heat, so the heat is also great for weight loss,” she said. Jiveh is focused on providing a lively experience at Zoia, which means “alive” in Greek. “My significance is being spiritually alive,” Jiveh said. “I think it’s [important] to feel ignited inside and feeling alive, so that’s what I mean by coming here and feeling alive on a physical, mental and emotional level.” Along with her goal to enhance mental and physical ability for her clients, Jiveh has a team of experienced yoga instructors. Among them are master yogi Cat Cabot. “She does advanced levels,” Jiveh said.

“She’s going to do advanced classes and a lot of yoga workshops as well, and I’ll be doing a lot of nutrition and taking care of yourself workshops.” She encourages all who look to try heated vinyasa yoga to go to a class run by each of her instructors to get a better personalized experience and determine what works best for them. “I have other teachers, and they all offer something different,” Jiveh said. “I teach some of the classes, and I have several different teachers, which gives people options to try out every teacher, so they can personalize and see what they like.” Classes at Zoia range from 60 to 75 minutes in length. Also offered are a variety of workshops that revolve around yoga, nutrition and other forms of holistic health, which is the base of Jiveh’s passion and focus for how yoga can aid in people’s health. “When I moved here, I worked in the hospital,” Jiveh said. “It wasn’t really in line with what I loved. As I said, my passion is to promote health to help empower people to take care of themselves. That’s how this whole thing came about — for people to have a place to get educated about good nutrition and have a good place that feels like home.” Part of that is her aim to keep Zoia a small, intimate location. Other offerings at Zoia include mediation classes and a stretch and restore class, which are not heated classes. “We also are starting to offer wellness services,” Jiveh said. “I’m a registered nurse, so I do detox, like cleansing and health coaching, and teaching people to eat properly.” Yoga is a widely popular spiritual discipline that can be interpreted in many ways, but Jiveh said, no matter what, yoga is for everyone. She encourages people to try it with the heat if they have not had the experience of doing so. “Yoga has become so popular, and it’s become so westernized that people now associate yoga with all these girls wearing bikinis and doing poses on the

Pony Lane Farm’s base of operations in Wellington. PHOTO COURTESY PHELPS MEDIA GROUP

By Elaine Wessel

Pony Lane Farm, owned and operated by the Thatcher family, is a world-class breeding and performance horse farm offering breeding services to elite hunter and jumper stallions, as well as sales of high-quality young horses. Located both here in Wellington and in Bluffdale, Utah, the operation is known as one of the premier breeding farms in the United States, boasting a string of stallions and broodmares with impressive pedigrees and top show ring records. Since the launch of Pony Lane Farm in 2002, the operation has grown extensively, with a custom-built facility in Wellington propelling further success for the business in South Florida. In Wellington, Pony Lane Farm was first housed on a small property with 10 stalls, but the number of horses quickly outgrew the available space, prompting the Thatchers to expand. Drawn in by the appeal of the horse-friendly Saddle Trail neighborhood, Pony Lane Farm found a new home in

February 2014, purchasing the larger space with help of close friend and colleague Alex Jayne, a well-known trainer in the Wellington show jumping sphere. “We loved the accessibility and the people who lived in the Saddle Trail neighborhood, as well as the fact that the neighborhood is designed for horses,” said Maura Thatcher, founder of Pony Lane Farm. “We eventually purchased it without even going inside the house. tured a 12-stall barn equipped with a tack room, riders’ lounge and grooms’ apartment, as well as a home designed for year-round living. With only two more stalls than previously, further expansion was needed. With horses on

the property year-round, the Thatcher family ensured they would have an equine-friendly atmosphere, not only during the busy winter show season, but during the summer months as well. “We built the exact mirror of the original barn, bumping us up to 22 stalls, and we connected the two barns with a covered crossover with the help of our architect. We placed the treadmill, hoof water spa and TheraPlate within the crossover, and added a place for the farrier that has easy access,” Thatcher explained. “The horses are very comfortable using those pieces of equipment and getting their shoes, because they’re right around the other horses. You’re not asking them to leave their friends!” With a solid home base secured, the team at Pony Lane Farm has been able to focus on both breeding and competing in Wellington for the past three

years. When in Florida, the farm’s three premier stallions — Dulf Van Den Bisschop, Klotaire du Moulin and Standing Ovation — all keep the peace in sideby-side stalls, and the team implements specific protocols to notify the horse which job he will be completing on any given day, making it possible for active breeding stallions to also successfully compete at the nearby Winter Equestrian Festival. Adding to its repertoire, Pony Lane Farm further aims for its stable full of both up-and-coming and proven performance horses to bring home accolades from the WEF show ring. From breeding youngsters to competing in the Grand Prix, the Thatchers have a hand in many of the equestrian opportunities that draw athletes to Wellington. “Wellington is where the horse world comes to play. You have so many inter-

national and national riders, as well as the top horses in the world in both jumpers and hunters. You compete with the best, and that makes it so much more fun to be in Wellington and to be able to experience that level,” Thatcher said. “The girls have entered a new chapter of their lives, but they still want to include the horses. I want the horses to always be a part of their lives, like they have always been a part of mine, no matter what level. I can’t imagine not having horses as a part of our life.” Whether at the farm or around town, the Thatchers enjoy their time in Wellington year after year, and aim to contribute to the local equestrian community. From the equestrian center to local restaurants, they take advantage of all that the Wellington community has to offer from November through April, and then count the days until it’s time to return at the end of the year.

“The people who normally live in Wellington are so welcoming, and the restaurants and businesses are always excited to see the season start,” Thatcher said. “I’m really looking forward to that part. I’m always sad when it ends and excited for it to start.” To learn more, visit www.ponylanefarm. com.

International Equestrian Scene

Story by Elaine Wessel • Photos by Abner Pedraza

Bastian Schroeder and Margot Peroni are a well-known duo at the Winter Equestrian Festival showgrounds in Wellington. An equestrian power couple, Schroeder is recognized as a leader in international equine transportation, and Peroni has a successful track record of showing horses in the hunters.

(Left) EquiJet’s Bastian Schroeder and Margot Peroni.

With the launch of their new international shipping business, EquiJet, Schroeder and Peroni are looking forward to playing a greater role in the success of the local equestrian industry by ensuring safe, timely and efficient shipping solutions for the hundreds of people who bring horses from all corners of the globe to Wellington for the winter show season. For both, horses are a way of life. Growing up in Germany, Schroeder’s love of horses was passed onto him by his parents, who encouraged him to ride and saw him through a competitive riding career in Germany. Peroni’s upbringing was parallel to that of her husband. “I am a third-generation horse person. My grandfather was in the last mounted cavalry, so during World War II, he literally traded his horses in for a tank,” Peroni recalled. “My mother and her siblings rode Saddlebred horses when they were younger before hunters started to get popular, and as soon as the hunters took off, my mom was the first one in the family to get a hunter. The horse show bug has been with my family ever since.” Competitively, winning the Platinum Performance $250,000 Hunter Prix Final

at Hits-on-the-Hudson in 2015 aboard her mount Orlon is a highlight of Peroni’s riding career, along with her one-two division championship and reserve at the prestigious Washington International Horse Show in 2016 with Encore B and Orlon, respectively. Professionally, EquiJet has now taken center stage, quickly growing to be a wellknown name in equine transportation in only a few short months of incorporation. Working together, the husband-and-wife team have already accrued a loyal clientele base, and have arranged the logistics, both ground and air, for numerous international competitors and sellers across the world. Though EquiJet is a fairly new enterprise, Schroeder has been an industry name in equine transport for more than 10 years. What initially began as a service for friends has grown into a full-fledged business endeavor with offices stationed both in the United States and Europe for the convenience of equine world travelers and their owners. As lifelong horse people, both Schroeder and Peroni are uniquely qualified to manage often complicated equine travel logistics, understanding in depth the mulwellington the magazine | february 2018

tifaceted management and processes that must be organized correctly to get a horse door-to-door across nations and sometimes continents. “The goal for EquiJet is to grow the business and provide world class customer service with an attention to detail so that we can take care of customers individually and fit whatever their needs are,” Schroeder said. “I don’t know that we necessarily want to be the highest volume company, simply churning people out, but we want to have a highcaliber clientele and provide them with the best service they can get.” Run by people with lifetime passions for riding, training and taking care of horses, EquiJet’s expertise and knowledge of the nuances of equine travel are unparalleled. The owners pride themselves on offering flawless coordination for horses traversing the globe, ensuring that not only are the animals transported safely and on time, but also accompanied by the appropriate documentation and equipment. entering the country, the EquiJet team is equally equipped to handle those arrangements. With horses as a common denominator in their relationship, Schroeder and Peroni have successfully navigated the intricacies of the equestrian lifestyle together in both their personal and professional lives. At the show ring, Schroeder is there to support his wife, while also networking for business opportunities, and after taking the plunge as business owners, the two have further committed themselves to the equestrian industry at large. With so much of the North American equestrian market focused in Wellington, it was no question that the pair would be spending the winter season in South Florida during EquiJet’s first year of business. “There is no other place in the world. At the moment in the United States, Wellington is the only place that has such an international clientele that travel in and out,” Schroeder said. “People move their entire barns to Florida for the winter to sell and compete horses.”

Peroni agreed. “I think because of the amazing type of clientele that we have access to in Wellington, we realize that this is where our business needs to be for the season,” she said. “You have polo, dressage, three-day eventers, hunters and jumpers from all over the world, and you’re only an hour or so from the closest international port of entry in Miami.” EquiJet’s owners will be situated in Wellington for the entirety of the Winter Equestrian Festival show season, along with their three horses, Orlon, Casario and Ivar. In addition to personally handling the import and export of horses into Wellington for their burgeoning business, Schroeder and Peroni will be frequent attendees of all of the events at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. Whether competitively in the ring or professionally with EquiJet, one thing is certain: Bastian Schroeder and Margot Peroni are aiming to make waves in the equestrian community. Insurance Expert Wayne Jenkins Puts Family And Community At Center Stage By Laura Tingo

One might expect that after 30 years in the insurance business, industry expert Wayne Jenkins would have a standard recipe for success in place. However, that is not how Jenkins, the founder of CaptiveOne Advisors LLC and a longtime Wellington resident, “does” insurance. His ideas about how to do things differently is what led Jenkins to start his own firm in 2005. CaptiveOne is a national firm, with offices in Wellington and Wilmington, Del., that specializes in building custom, captive insurance programs so that businesses can self-insure against the unexpected. “We create strategies, based on what our clients need to sustain and thrive when the unforeseen happens,” Jenkins explained. “Our approach is different… we build the improbable, but practical.” Jenkins keeps family, the next generation of business leaders and the way insurance is perceived at the core of

his vision. His two sons, Bryan and Steven, both work in the family business and are each graduates of Jenkins’ own alma mater, the University of Miami. With a deep bench of insurance industry professionals, skilled specialists and an entrepreneurial spirit, CaptiveOne is poised to expand the public’s perception about the traditional insurance business and how a custom-built captive insurance program can benefit a variety of businesses. When not working on insurance-business strategy at the office, Jenkins and his sons enjoy traveling, fishing, boating together, fishing tournaments and rooting for the “Canes” at University of Miami games. “We get outdoors and do a lot of entertaining together,” said Jenkins, who raised his family in Wellington. “My family has seen and experienced this town’s growth first-hand, with its beautiful parks, exceptional schools, programs and businesses.” The family also aims to give back by investing in their

hometown community. This year, Jenkins’ family business has jumped into the equestrian ring with CaptiveOne’s place as an official major sponsor of the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival. The annual, world-renowned event, taking place through April 1 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, features Olympic-caliber competitions, exhibitions and clinics, attended by more than 6,000 horses, 3,250 riders and 850 trainers. WEF is expected to draw 250,000 people, with participants and visitors from 33 countries and 50 states converging on Palm Beach County’s acclaimed equestrian center. Total prize money awarded over its 12-week run will exceed $8 million. “I am thrilled to support my community as a sponsor of this iconic, signature event,” said Jenkins, who owns

Attorney Mickey Smith Enjoys Helping People And Serving The Community Story by Ray Burow and Deborah Welky Photos by Abner Pedraza

Growing up in Williamson, W.Va., there were two things that Michael “Mickey” Smith knew from an early age: he would grow up to be an attorney, and he would always be called Mickey. From the first grade, his mother insisted that he remember to request to be called Mickey, since he was named after his uncle. Smith’s parents also were insistent concerning a college education. Neither of them attended college, but their children would. While studying engineering at Virginia Tech, Smith met his wife-to-be, Lizz; she was an education major. After earning his engineering degree, graduating with honors, Smith received a merit scholarship and continued his education at the Duke University School of Law, where he graduated in the top six percent of his class. In law school, Smith was elected to the Order of the Coif, an honor society for law school graduates. Smith is also a member of Mensa International, the International High IQ Society. Though Smith has received accolades for being incredibly intelligent, he is also humble. “I don’t consider myself to be especially smart, but I do think I am hardworking. I have always been hardworking, and I like school. If I won the lottery, I think that I would go back and be a professional student. I like to learn,” Smith said. Education is important to the Smith family. Lizz, a recently retired school teacher, discovered that retirement wasn’t for her. She missed teaching and eventually returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher. Learning from her experience, Smith doesn’t ever plan to retire. “I think if you like what you do, I wouldn’t be in a rush

to find some other thing that you might not like,” Smith said. It may seem as though Smith can do anything he puts his mind to, but, he is a self-proclaimed terrible golfer. In fact, he said there are many things he isn’t great at. However, his job is one thing he does well. “I like helping people. I like talking to people and working with people,” he said. “I don’t view it as drudgery. It’s a joy most of the time, not all of the time, but most.” Smith is driven by his passion for his work, which has fueled his success. “I think you have to have a passion for what you do,” he said. “Law is a job that requires a lot of hours, and usually young lawyers who aren’t passionate about it don’t last very long in the profession.” In the early years of his career, Smith represented large insurance corporations. That ended in 2002, when he changed his focus. wellington the magazine | february 2018 111

“It just wasn’t rewarding any more. Contrary to the media, not all cases are fake and phony, so if you’re an insurance defense attorney, your job is to minimize what they pay out, sometimes to the detriment of people who are deserving,” he said. Now he works on the other side of the same type of issues as a partner at the law firm Lesser, Lesser, Landy & Smith, which recently opened a Wellington office. “We’re on the offense; trying to get money for deserving people,” he said. In addition to the office in the Lake Wellington Professional Centre, the 90-year-old firm also has offices in West Palm Beach, Boca Raton and Stuart. “My wife and I have lived in Wellington for 26 years,” Smith said. “I have connections and clients in the community, so, as a convenience to people, we opened an office here.” What people see on television dramas versus real life courtroom drama,

he said, is actually the opposite. It’s far more preparation and less performance. “It’s kind of totally flipped from TV, meaning on TV, they’ll prepare for 10 minutes and the flashy stuff is 50 minutes,” Smith explained. Smith is happy to see that Florida may be toughening up laws regarding texting while driving, making it a primary offense, one for which law enforcement can pull you over, rather than a secondary offense. “Everyone who drives knows that texting is extremely dangerous and leads to a lot of accidents,” Smith said. “We’re advocating for it to be passed because we see the effects of it. There are always going to be accidents, but we’re safety advocates. We want to lessen accidents — our families are out on the road, too.” From e-mail and phone calls to texting and GPS, there are so many distractions for today’s drivers. “I just started a new case where somebody was tex-

ting while driving a truck. They blew through a stop sign and hit a motorcycle, and that happens a lot,” Smith said. He also advises everyone to have uninsured motorist insurance and make sure they always have an attorney when heading into court. In his personal life, Smith is a doting husband. For their 30th wedding anniversary, he surprised Lizz with a visit to his alma mater, which included renewing their vows in Duke University’s chapel, where they were married. The Smiths are avid travelers, having just visited their seventh continent — Antarctica. Together, they marveled at the pristine beauty of the place, possibly preserved because so few people visit. Smith’s adolescent dream drove him from small-town America, but his heart has kept him in Wellington, where he uses his passion and drive to help the community. Two of the many organizations that

He serves on both of their boards and enjoys serving the community he loves. Smith was smitten with the Boys & Girls Club as soon as he toured its facility. “I knew about it. I knew that it existed, but I didn’t really know,” he said. “I guess like a lot of people, I didn’t realize the extent of the need. I really think that the organization is wonderful.” There is a sign in the club noting that it is easier to build strong young people rather than fix broken adults. “That’s what appeals to me. It’s a great mission,” Smith said. Community service is important to Smith, who tends to focus on the elderly, as well as the youth of the community. Both are the goals of the Wellington Community Foundation, where he is a

founding board member. He is also a member of the Wellington Rotary Club. “It’s a passion of mine to be involved in my community,” Smith said. It all fits into his life’s goal to help others better their lives. “I would like for folks to be able to say that I was someone

who gave back to the community,” he said. “I am a huge fan of Wellington and have been for 25 years. I want to devote my time trying to help.” For more information about attorney Mickey Smith, call (561) 655-2028 or visit www.lesserlawfirm.com.

Volunteer Work Helps Keep Young At Heart Story by Ray Burow • Photo by Abner Pedraza

Decades upon decades ago, her parents immigrated to this country from Italy. For this reason, she prefers to be called by her given name — at least, what it was meant to be… “Katarina.” The now Wellington resident’s name was misconstrued in translation when she was born 86 years ago, and the name “Catherine” was printed on Katarina Evangelista’s birth certificate. “No one calls me Catherine; always Katarina,” said Evangelista, who is originally from New Rochelle, N.Y. It is with great respect that Evangelista speaks of her parents. She credits her mother and father for raising her to respect others and is convinced that children today aren’t afforded the same parental attention she was as a child. “Parents today are busy,” she said. “I would encourage them to spend more time with their children. We always ate together.” Of all the advice passed on to her from her parents, she considers the best to be from her father. She has never forgotten that one day, without provocation, her father sternly told her, “You are to never smoke.” Evangelista laughed recalling her father’s statement. “To this day, I’ve never smoked,” she said. When Evangelista was 18 years of age, she met her future husband, Aldo. Little did she know, her new boyfriend had a significant connection to her parents. It was an uncanny link they discovered on their first meeting. Speaking excitedly in Italian, the older couple learned that the boyfriend of their Katarina had come to the United States on the exact same ship that ferried Evangelista’s par114

ents to Ellis Island. Her boyfriend was only 2 years old at the time. Aldo and Katarina were married for 54 years before his passing. It has been 30 years since Evangelista moved to South Florida, and as for most people of retirement age, it was the warm sun that beckoned her and her husband south. However, neither Evangelista nor her husband had yet retired, as they were both living and working in Connecticut at the time. “Aldo came home one day after work and said, ‘It’s time.’ That was in November of 1987. I said, ‘Let’s go,’ and we

“Volunteering isn’t for everyone. It really depends on the person. I know many seniors who volunteer, but others who feel they’ve already done their part, and if they’re going to work, they’d work to get paid,” Evangelista said. “But if they only knew the good feeling that comes with volunteer work.”

were here by Jan. 5, 1988,” Evangelista said. “It was an awful winter.” Evangelista breaks the “forgetful senior” stereotype. She is very good with dates, recalling and associating events in the same manner as she remembers her own name. “I don’t know how,” Evangelista said. “It’s a gift — that’s how I look at it. I remember birthdays, anniversaries. All I can say is that it’s a gift.” That’s not the only old-age stereotype that is foreign to Evangelista, who might best be described as “young at heart.” The 86-year-old breaks them all. She doesn’t mind telling people exactly how old she is, but before revealing her age, she engages the inquisitor in a quick guessing game. The test-takers are most often stumped, rarely guessing or believing that she is as old as she is. “Sometimes, they’re afraid to guess, but I tell them, ‘It’s OK,’” Evangelista said. “‘Even if you guess 100, I’ll tell you.’” No one ever guesses 100, and seldom guesses that Evangelista is in her mid-80s. This is especially true of the students in the New Horizons Elementary School afterschool program. Evangelista worked there with the kids and teachers for 15 years, only just recently retiring. The students there, however, showed very little interest in her age. “The only thing they ask is why my hair’s that color, which is completely white,” Evangelista said. “I tell them that when someone has all gray hair, that it means it is a blessing, and to give them respect. That’s how I handle it.” At the end of January, Evangelista will

As a volunteer, she is looking forward to tutoring kids in reading, especially those who require special attention. Volunteerism is a way of life for Evangelista, who volunteers in her own local community, including her church, the Wellington Seniors Club and the Kids Cancer Foundation, aside from her time at New Horizons. “Volunteering isn’t for everyone. It really depends on the person. I know many seniors who volunteer, but others who feel they’ve already done their part, and if they’re going to work, they’d work to get paid,” Evangelista said. “But if they only knew the good feeling that comes with volunteer work.” Growing older isn’t a challenge for Evangelista. “Anyone can have a senior moment,” she said. “You don’t have to be a senior to sometimes forget.” Even though she remains vibrant and independent, she notices that as she ages, her two children take on a different role in their relationship with her. “They’ve become the parent,” she said. This doesn’t bother Evangelista one bit. She is happy that they care and is certain that when the day comes, she will take their advice on important issues — such as when to stop driving. That day seems far away for now. Evangelista, who loves to be out and about meeting people, doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon, living out her favorite quote before the people she meets every day: “Nice people do things for nicer people.” “That’s my special saying,” Evangelista explained. “As nice as you are, you do nice things for people who are nicer than you.”

Mary Miller Brings Clients A Lifetime Of Experience In The Wellington Area Story by Matthew Auerbach • Photo by Abner Pedraza

When real estate professional Mary Miller of Illustrated Properties accompanies clients on their search for possible new homes in Wellington or the surrounding area, she’s squarely in her comfort zone. “I am a true South Florida native who grew up in the western communities and graduated from Wellington High School in 1992,” she said. Miller’s first career started at Print It Plus in Royal Palm Beach, where she was employed for more than two decades. It prepared her for her current role as a Realtor. “Direct experience collaborating with numerous local business owners, helping them to grow their businesses within marketing budgets, project management and demanding deadlines have shaped me into the detail-oriented person I am today,” Miller said. That close involvement with clients, as well as her willingness to immerse herself in every level of the real estate process, has brought Miller much success. She knows that trust must be earned in order to get the job done right for those she’s working with. Her expertise, confidence and commitment are huge factors in helping her reach that goal. “As a Realtor with Illustrated Properties in Wellington, I enjoy helping individuals and families as I guide them through the process of buying or selling a home,” she said. “My business management experience, along with my extensive knowledge of the local area, guarantees you the best real estate transaction with the least amount of stress.” Miller didn’t wind up at Illustrated Properties by accident. She was looking to be part of an organization that could not only utilize her unique skill set to the fullest, but also offer her the widest possible client base. “I chose Illustrated Properties because they are Florida’s largest, independently owned real estate company,” she said. “I am provided with professional market intelligence, industry-leading marketing and negotiating tools, and a network of qualified buyers and sellers across the globe.” Miller is quite pleased with the state of the current real estate market, be it on a national level or here in Wellington. She wouldn’t be surprised to see residential numbers swell a bit over the coming year. “2018 is a great time to be in the real estate market,” Miller said. “Interest rates are still low, and the local market has been healthy and stable. This somewhat level playing field is good for everybody looking to buy or sell this year. Also, the

intense winter conditions up north may have some seasonal visitors looking to make a home purchase this year.” Of course, even a dedicated Realtor has to kick back from time to time. When Miller isn’t plying her trade and fulfilling the dream of a buyer or seller, she allows herself the enjoyment of simple but essential pleasures. “In my personal life, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends,” she said. “I love to foster dogs and help them to find forever homes. My hobbies include painting, fitness, and relaxing at our local, breathtaking beaches.” Illustrated Properties is located at 11924 W. Forest Hill Blvd., Suite 18, in Wellington. Dr. Pedro Sanchez Of MDVIP Offers A Concierge Approach To Healthcare

wellington | health

Story by Craig Campbell • Photo by Abner Pedraza

The trend toward concierge medicine is a blend of the old school family doctor and of the new school technological and preventative approach to medicine. Wellington’s Dr. Pedro Sanchez has embraced the trend, which he feels provides better healthcare for his patients. Sanchez spent more than 25 years in a traditional medical practice, seeing approximately 30 patients per day, before joining MDVIP in March 2017. “I was spending approximately 5 minutes with each patient, which wasn’t enough,” Sanchez explained. “Now, I can give individual attention, which is a massive improvement and a much higher level of care.” Apart from the individualized attention, he believes there is also a cost savings benefit to MDVIP’s approach. “I can call specialists while the patient is in the room and consult with them — and the patient — on the best way to treat the illness,” Sanchez said. “By doing this, I recently saved a patient an emergency room visit.” Sanchez also feels that he can now better help patients who have chronic conditions, like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and more. “I have time to counsel and explain their condition to the patient, and insist on coordination amongst all of the specialists,” he said. MDVIP was founded in 2000 in Boca Raton and now has a nationwide network of more than 950 affiliated physicians serving more than 280,000 patients. “It’s also excellent for snow birds and travelers,” Sanchez said. “All of my patients have my cell phone number, and either I can coordinate what they need or I can get them in to see one of my colleagues.” The foundation of the approach is the MDVIP Wellness Program, which encompasses advanced screenings and physician counseling that focuses on important health and wellness areas, and includes an annual comprehensive,

prevention and wellness assessment that lasts up to two hours. The annual membership of $1,850 breaks down to about $150 a month, or $5 a day, and can be paid quarterly, semi-annually or annually. An added courtesy is the Family Plan, which allows the adult patients’ children, between the ages 16 and 26, to be seen without an additional annual membership fee. MDVIP accepts all commercial insurance and Medicare, and the concierge approach offers another cost savings to the patient. “I have time to get prior authorizations,” Sanchez said. “I have more time, which means my ability to fight for the patient against the insurance company has increased.” The annual well assessment also means that the patient is rigorously screened for diseases that are either present in their genetic tree or appropriate to their gender, age, race or ethnicity. This is another way where the patients’ long-term health is focused upon, while simultaneously keeping costs down through early detection and treatment. “Everybody in medicine is moving in that direction,” Sanchez said. “Accountable care organizations and commercial insurance companies do everything based on costs.” Sanchez added that MDVIP has access to the master database of the Centers for Medical Excellence, which allows him to research the very best specialists to treat each specific condition and get an appointment for the patient. He has privileges at both Palms West Hospital and Wellington Regional Medi-

The Polo Bar & Grill is now open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunches at the Polo West Golf and Equestrian on South Shore Blvd. PHOTO BY CARLOS MOLEJON

New Polo Bar & Grill Pays Nostalgic Nod To Vintage Wellington For Gary Fellers and Jeanette Sassoon, Polo Bar & Grill is more than Wellington’s newest restaurant, it is a labor of love. Long-time residents, equestrians and owners of the iconic apparel store PoloGear USA, the husband-and-wife duo has seen the community evolve across the span of decades, from the very first polo game, in which Fellers played, to the village’s everchanging skyline, shops and restaurants. It is their love of the community that spurred the creation of Polo Bar & Grill, designed to pay a nostalgic nod to vintage Wellington and its equestrian roots. The newly renovated restaurant, located at Polo West Golf & Equestrian off of South Shore Blvd. in the epicenter of Wellington, fuses modern décor, sweeping views and smalltown comforts with the excitement of world-class horse sport events, such as arena polo, show jumping and dressage.

Polo Bar & Grill is ideal for the eclectic diner or the local foodie, featuring stellar farm-fresh cuisine, locally sourced produce and hand-crafted cocktails, with a sizable menu that is a compilation of farm-to-table lunch, dinner and brunch plates with a California West Coast twist. The kitchen at Polo Bar & Grill is run by Executive Chef Victor Irizarry, a graduate of the prestigious Disney Culinary Institute and a master sommelier. He has worked at the worldrenowned California Grill and Yachtsman’s Steakhouse, and served as executive chef at Seasons 52 and the Hard Rock Cafe. His mantra is simple, but reflects in each dish served at Polo Bar & Grill — “cook from the heart.” And so he does. Ingredients are sourced locally, and vendors are chosen based on their quality and proximity to the restaurant. The difference is in the taste, and the dishes do not disappoint. “Everything you see is a la carte, it’s prepared daily and it’s fresh,” Irizarry said. “We don’t even have a microwave in the kitchen. There are no preservatives, no antibiotics and everywellington the magazine | february 2018

No matter what you order, each dish leaves the palate craving more. The restaurant is also host to an array of special events, from an outstanding weekday happy hour to a fabulous weekend brunch featuring reasonable set-priced unlimited mimosas and bloody Marys. It is also dog-friendly, and Polo Bar & Grill is the only restaurant in Wellington to offer a dog menu for four-legged diners. “We want Polo Bar & Grill to be a welcoming space for the community by offering an exciting, approachable menu, hosting weekly events open to the public, and giving back to the community through our partnerships with local charities,” General Manager Leslie Hill explained. Polo Bar & Grill stands out with its weekly events, as well as close ties to the equestrian community and local fundraisers. Positioned on the only remaining public golf course in Wellington, the restaurant offers seasonal golf events, show jumping on Wednesdays and Fridays during the winter season, Big Dogs Night Out benefiting Big Dog Ranch Rescue, arena polo every Sunday evening, and Western in Wellington on

Saturday nights, with the J.C. Cowgirls taking the limelight and capping off the night with the sounds of country music during Southern Rock Saturdays. “We want the new Polo Bar & Grill to be a taste of the past; a throwback to the original Wellington, which was fun and filled with good camaraderie,” Sassoon said. “We want our restaurant to be a place for jumpers, polo players and dressage people, as well as non-equestrians, to decompress and enjoy a relaxing night out. It’s a place where they can come and have a great meal, a couple of cocktails, have fun, and just mingle with people in and out of the equestrian and polo world, just like the old vintage Wellington, the way it used to be.” Polo Bar & Grill is located at 2470 Greenview Cove Drive in Wellington. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. For more information, visit www.polobarandgrill.com or call (561) 429-2049.
