Spring is in the air as we approach the high point of the equestrian season. I’ve learned so much about the wonderful world of dressage through this issue, and I’m excited to share some of the highlights. The Wellington area is home to some of the best dressage competition in the world, and this month we take a look back at the sport’s local roots as the Palm Beach Dressage Derby marks its 30th anniversary. We also visit the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center, home of Wellington Classic Dressage and Gold Coast Dressage Association shows, as well as the World Dressage Masters Palm Beach. This growing international sport returned to the heart of Wellington’s equestrian area with the founding of the Global Dressage Festival last year. This impressive event is back for its second year with lots of great competition. We cap our special dressage section by saluting some of the top names in the sport, both here and internationally, in our “Faces of Dressage” pictorial. I wish to thank the team at Phelps Media Group International for their help with this special dressage issue, as well as the many photographers who shared fantastic dressage photography.

Ballantine Brown and the team at B Studio Art on location at the new Wellington Equestrian Gallery & Mall for this month’s Wellington Fashion pictorial. Well-known for their work with the Wellington Seniors Club, Mary and Tony Alfalla are this month’s Wellington Volunteer of the Year award nominees. Wellington Health features Dr. Vincent Dolce’s new specialty in PRP facial rejuvenation, while Wellington Real Estate interviews Carol Sollak. Wellington Home tours a wonderful Saddle Trail estate featuring top equestrian amenities, and Wellington Table samples the fresh, contemporary American cuisine on the menu at the new Cafe Fifty2. Finally this month, we are proud to announce the winner of last year’s Wellington The Magazine Woman of the Year award — longtime community activist Iseult Broglio. Thank you to everyone who took part in our online poll. Dawn Rivera, Publisher

Two amazing riders are profiled this month: show jumping star Margie Engle and dressage rider Courtney King-Dye. We’re happy to see Engle’s return to the show ring after being temporarily sidelined by injury. Meanwhile, King-Dye explained how she has turned a tragic accident into a new career as a helmet safety activist. Also this issue, we chat with Nancy Marshall as the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation marks 15 years of promoting Everglades education. We also had the opportunity to speak with the principals of the Shapiro-Pertnoy Companies, one of Wellington’s original builders, which is now tearing down and rebuilding homes, revitalizing and modernizing the community. Village Pioneer Ken Adams Honored Former County Commissioner Ken Adams, a Wellington resident and businessman instrumental in the formation of the village, will be the newest name on the Wellington Founders Plaque. At the Wellington Village Council meeting Feb. 12, the unanimous decision to add Adams to the plaque was made at the request of Town-Crier Publisher Barry Manning. “Over the years, Mr. Adams has set an example for the leaders in this community,” Manning said. Council members were supportive of the idea. Councilman Matt Willhite said that Adams continues to work for the betterment of the village even today. “I have yet to find another person I find more ethical and highly respectable,” Willhite said. Councilwoman Anne Gerwig noted that Adams helped Wellington out of its infancy. “He was involved in the incorporation of Wellington and helped us become a grown-up municipality,” she said. Mayor Bob Margolis called Adams a “role model” for him. “He always sees the bigger picture,” Margolis said. “He has absolutely raised the bar very high.” Adams said that he was accepting the honor for those who had come before him. “I’m accepting it for those who are better people than I am and who have done more for Wellington than I have,” he said. “Unfortunately, they are all gone. We all stand on some very strong shoulders in Wellington.” Goldenrod Park Opens — More than a year after Wellington closed Goldenrod Road’s access to Azure Avenue, children in the community have a new park. Goldenrod Park was completed in January, Wellington Community Services Director Nicole Evangelista said. In July 2011, the Wellington Village Council voted to close Goldenrod Road at the C-6 Canal. The controversial decision cut off access by children in the Goldenrod community to nearby Azure Park. The new park was part of the road closure plan,

Evangelista said. “The council wanted a park for the community that would be a safe place for children to play,” she said. Constructing the park, located on a formerly vacant piece of property on Goldenrod Road just east of Hyacinth Place, cost nearly $200,000. It features a playground with two slides, monkey bars and a climbing apparatus. There is also a covered pavilion and a half basketball court. RV Proposal Moves Forward — After years of discussion surrounding recreational vehicles in Wellington’s Equestrian Preserve, a plan has begun to take shape that will allow use of the temporary homes during the winter season. In February, Wellington’s Planning, Zoning & Adjustment Board unanimously approved several measures that would permit but tightly regulate the use of RVs in the preserve. “Currently they are prohibited,” Equestrian Master Plan Director Mike O’Dell said. “This would allow them as temporary housing during the equestrian season.” Despite being prohibited, O’Dell said that there are a number of RVs in the area illegally. The proposed regulations would allow one RV on 2.5 to 5 acres, two RVs on 5 to 10 acres and three RVs on properties of 10 acres or more. Property owners would be able to have RVs only for two consecutive equestrian seasons before going before the Wellington Village Council for special approval. Additionally, the property owner would have to provide electric, sewage and water, and get all required inspections and permits before someone could live in the RV. PZA Board Member Mike Drahos was concerned about allowing the vehicles in Wellington, but noted that it seems to be a continually pressing issue. “You keep coming back to us with ideas,” he said. “This seems to be the most stringent. I figure at some point we have to accept one.” The ordinance passed unanimously. It now heads to the council for approval.

Woman Of The Year Winner:

Iseult Broglio Story by Deborah Welky Photo by Abner Pedraza

Twelve deserving nominees made the competition especially tough, but the voters have spoken. Following the tabulation of all online votes for Wellington The Magazine’s Woman of the Year Award, we are pleased to announce the winner — Iseult Broglio. For those who voted, Broglio was the people’s choice. She probably would have received even more votes if children’s votes had been counted and if animals had computers. A staunch supporter of the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center, Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Wellington Boys & Girls Club, Broglio became one of Wellington’s greatest assets from the moment she moved here in 1980. “Wellington is a big little city with a great family atmosphere and a worldfamous equestrian community,” she said. “It was a nice place to raise our son.” She and husband Lee began by sponsoring baseball teams at the Boys & Girls Club. Lee also volunteered as an assistant coach for son Frank’s teams while Iseult, as team mom, provided refreshments. They did that for 10 years until Frank outgrew the program. Broglio then turned her attention to Vinceremos, serving on its board for over 20 years. For nine of those years, Lee chaired the organization’s board. While the Broglios saw dramatic improvements in the disabled youth served by Vinceremos, the center itself saw dramatic improvements under the Broglios’ leadership.

sheds and a covered arena in a new, more convenient location in Loxahatchee Groves. Where there originally had been six horses, there were 22. The student population doubled. Big Dog Ranch Rescue, a no-kill shelter for dogs, is the most recent facility to benefit from Broglio’s leadership. Case in point: a recent golf tournament successfully provided much-needed funds in a hurry. But Broglio is quick to share any accolades that come her way. “Wellingtonians, especially the horse people, help us in our efforts to serve the less fortunate,” she said. “We depend on our local businesses and the public in general.”

The Arthur R. Marshall Foundation Celebrating 15 Years Of Programs Promoting Everglades Education Story by Jessica Gregoire  Photos by Abner Pedraza

Living in South Florida gives us the privilege of having as a neighbor one of the nation’s largest areas where nature is protected — the Everglades. Since 1998, the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation for the Everglades has been pursuing its mission to unite young people with nature through education and outreach. As the foundation approaches its 15th anniversary, it will mark the milestone this month with a March 10 celebration that culminates at a dinner in Wellington. The foundation was created by environmentalist Arthur R. Marshall Jr., who was encouraged to do so by his friend, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, famed environmentalist and author of the 1947 book The Everglades: River of Grass. Marshall wanted his foundation to promote and deliver science-based education and programs to restore the Everglades. Douglas decided that she would be the one to promote the foundation, while Marshall would be the scientific brain behind it. She gave him $1,500 and the use of her nonprofit organization to launch him toward his goal. Soon after Marshall gained support for his dream, he passed away, in 1985. But Douglas kept at it until 1998, when she died at age 108. Through family support, Marshall’s nephew John Arthur Marshall decided to continue his uncle’s mission, and created the Arthur R. Marshall Foundation and the Florida Environmental Institute in 1998. John and his wife, Nancy, are cofounders of the foundation and

have been a significant part of its growth. “Because of his passion for the foundation, we had many good things to start with,” Nancy said of the late Arthur Marshall. “He wrote many papers; he already had the refuge named after him; and also, the eminent scholar chair in the Department of Biology at the University of Florida is the Arthur R. Marshall Jr. Chair.” The Marshalls used the limited resources they had in the beginning and began building the foundation. “We had only 38 business cards to start with, and we called every one of those people to let them know what we were doing,” Nancy said. “I’m just so proud of the organization today and all the development we have made.”

continue to have on people who are a part of our programs,” Nancy said. All of the scientists on their science and environmental committee are volunteers. “We don’t have any scientist on staff,” Nancy said. “That is something that we are looking to have in the future.” The foundation has two master’s degree-educated instructors on staff, The Marshall Foundation runs a long list of Everglades educational programs.

Those milestones include starting a summer internship program in 2002 for college students. “We have graduated 48 of those students,” she said. “Our objective is to get as many of these students who have graduated involved, and come back and work in the Everglades.” One of their very first graduates from the program went to Columbia University and came back as a civil engineer to work on one of the environmental projects. “She’s a mom now, and she came back to help out, which is the impact that we want to |wellington the magazine| March 2013

one in education and one in wetlands restoration. “We have young people out there who are passionate about the environment,” Nancy said. “We want to promote them and give them an opportunity to save the Everglades.” The educators teach youth from kindergartners through high school seniors about Everglades restoration and preservation projects through hands-on, interactive experiences — and the programs have soared in popularity among teachers and students alike. “Our programs are so popular that we are now scheduling spots for 2014,” Nancy said. “People want to do our indoor and outdoor programs, and we even have workshops in June for the teachers and educators, which we do in cooperation with the Loxahatchee

National Wildlife Refuge and the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach County.” The Arthur R. Marshall Foundation’s volunteers have made significant contributions to Everglades preservation and restoration. “We’ve planted over 100,000 trees through our volunteer programs,” Nancy said, noting that the foundation’s goal over the next few years is to reach every student in the county. “We want them all to become stewards of the environment.” Then, the foundation hopes to expand beyond South Florida. “We’ll start to spread out in telling the story from Shingle Creek in Orlando, where the Everglades starts, to Florida Bay. Then we would have done our job,” Nancy said. The Wellington area is crucial to the

mission of the foundation because it’s so close to the Everglades, bordering the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. “People in Wellington are starting to know about the refuge,” Nancy said. “The Wellington area is part of the original Everglades.” And Wellington is just a stone’s throw from the refuge itself, which can be accessed from State Road 7 at 10216 Lee Road in western Boynton Beach. The refuge protects more than 143,000 acres of the northern Everglades’ remnants in Palm Beach County. “We want to encourage people to come and spend an afternoon with their families and experience the refuge,” Nancy said. “If people from Wellington would come and see what’s in their back yard, I would be absolutely thrilled.”

One of the ways the foundation will be encouraging people to visit the refuge is by having a family picnic event on Sunday, March 10. “We really want to concentrate on bringing our Wellington families to the refuge,” Nancy said.

original Wellington Mall from 5:30 to 7 p.m. that evening, with County Commissioner Jess Santamaria and his wife, Victoria, as hosts. The event will cap off the family-friendly afternoon, offering a kids buffet and a magician, along with an adult menu, including beer and wine.

The event, which is during the day, is a kickoff to the foundation’s 15th anniversary. It will be an afternoon event for families, with activities such as scavenger hunts, guided walks and afternoon exhibits.

“It’s going to be a really nice day for families to enjoy while learning about the foundation,” Nancy said. “We are asking for any donations received to be made to the foundation so that the whole day can be complimentary.”

“We will also be welcoming our canoe paddlers, who will be beginning their paddling at Grassy Waters on March 8,” Nancy said. “And the public will be invited to meet the paddlers and ask them questions about their journey.”

The foundation is asking for a donation of $100 for a family of four for the entire day, $50 for one adult, and $10 for those 18 or younger. Kids 7 and under get in free.

Everyone is then invited to the 15th anniversary dinner at the

The Shapiro-Pertnoy Companies One Of Wellington’s Original Builders Is Now Tearing Down & Rebuilding Homes Story by Deborah Welky Photos by Abner Pedraza

In the beginning, it was cousins Steven Shapiro and Ron Pertnoy. Steven was making television commercials, while Ron had built one home in Wellington. When the two got together, magic happened — the melding of construction with marketing.

32

March 2013 |wellington the magazine|

The Shapiro-Pertnoy Companies was born in 1978. “Because we didn’t come up in the building business, our approach was merchandising- and marketingoriented,” Steven recalled. “We had

slightly better designs than most of the competition and marketed them a heck of a lot better, so we sold a few more houses. In the late 1970s, [master developer] Gould owned Wellington and made it very easy for builders like us to buy land and build homes.”

In 1979, Shapiro-Pertnoy took control of a 63-lot community known as The Island. Gould suggested that they build a few models and take it from there. In a way, that was exactly how Wellington got its start — creative home builders setting up models and marketing this new community on what was then the western fringe of civilization. Soon, Shapiro-Pertnoy broke the

$200,000 home barrier west of State Road 7. In 1981, they broke another barrier by building a $500,000 house along the polo fields in Southfields. They became known as the “luxury guys.”

built a small warehouse facility and Commerce Park, an office/lightindustrial complex on Pierson Road. “It was 1982,” Steven said. “Pierson Road was dirt, as was Fairlane Farms Road.”

Yet answering the needs of the public was always uppermost in their minds. Some of the 5,000 people then living in Wellington were complaining about having to drive way east for basic business services. So Shapiro-Pertnoy

Today, Shapiro-Pertnoy remains in the commercial real estate industry, owning and operating the Chancellor Corporate Center and the Shoppes at Chancellor on South Shore Blvd. in Wellington. By the mid-1980s, the “luxury guys” were building throughout the county — waterfront homes in Admiral’s Cove and a wide variety of residences in Palm Beach Polo going for $1 million to $1.5 million.

Luxury homes built 30 years ago are far different from luxury homes built today. “Kitchens are more gloriouslooking — and more functional. Vaulted ceilings are higher. The amount of detail, the moldings and inlays, they’re more exotic today,” Steven Shapiro explained. “The newer homes are more hurricane-resistant. Instead of added shutters, you have laminated glass so you don’t even have shutters. Building codes are much more stringent. We’ve learned a lot in the last 30 years.”

“To this day, we continue to build high-end houses throughout the county as well as offices, shopping centers, industrial parks and warehouses,” Steven said. Josh Pertnoy, Ron’s son, joined the company 11 years ago. He learned the high-end home-building business and became company superintendent, overseeing work on large estate home projects. After his graduation from the University of Colorado, Kevin Shapiro, Steven’s son, spent some time learning the industry working for other realestate firms before taking over the

2013

leasing, maintenance and property management side of the family business. “Making sure the customer is always happy is part of my DNA,” Kevin said. “Growing up in Wellington and seeing how it grew over the years and knowing that our company was a part of that growth made me very proud.” Yet from the time he went away to school to the time Kevin returned, Wellington’s stellar growth — from a new regional mall to an expanded equestrian area — had created a changed community, but one with plenty of opportunities. “Now, being a part of it and working together, hand-in-hand with my father, uncle and cousin on these projects, is exciting,” he said. And now Shapiro-Pertnoy is gearing up for the next phase — the teardown

Drive in the Palm Beach Polo community.

“About 10 years ago, we started tearing down homes in Admiral’s Cove,” Steven recalled. “Some were only 15 years old, and they were big, expensive houses. But the value of the lots had gone up so dramatically that buyers would tear down the existing home and build what they wanted on the valuable site. One 30,000-square-foot home started as a teardown of two homes that were not even 20 years old.”

“We built the original house in 1984 as a spec home, and the basic floor plan was very popular, but much of what made that house a success is no longer in vogue, such as a step-down into a sunken living room,” Steven explained. “But the house is on a spectacular lot.”

And now it’s happening right here in Wellington. Specifically, on Maidstone

The new owners fell in love with the lot, Steven said, but they also want things up-to-date with all the bells and whistles of a 21st century home. “Rather than renovate, and try to make the house into something it isn’t, they

wanted a custom home,” he said. “Many of the homes built in Palm Beach Polo are small and dated, but because Palm Beach Polo has retained its value, you are going to see more and more teardowns.” Luxury homes built 30 years ago are far different from luxury homes built today. “Kitchens are more glorious-looking — and more functional. Vaulted ceilings are higher. The amount of detail, the moldings and inlays, they’re more exotic today,” Steven said. “The newer homes are more hurricane-resistant.

Instead of added shutters, you have laminated glass so you don’t even have shutters. And the building codes are much more stringent. Designers and architects have learned a lot in the last 30 years.” The Maidstone Drive house, which has a 150-foot-wide frontage on a half-acre lot and spectacular views of a lake and golf course out back, will be 50 percent larger with an upstairs artist’s studio to further take advantage of the views. The master bedroom, kitchen, family room and baths are all going to be larger than those in the current home. “The current home wraps around a glorious pool/spa/gazebo area, and the new home will do the same,” Steven said. “This family lives in their back yard. They have breakfast on their patio every morning. They use the pool and the backyard deck. Their doors will be open a lot of the time.” The home will be razed and the lot will be completely cleared, which will take about a week. The reconstruction will take a year to 14 months. “The owners invited the entire neighborhood to their house to prepare them,” Kevin said. “They showed them floor plans and elevations. It was a pretty cool thing. They said, ‘This is who we are and what we’re doing, and we’re going to try to protect you from the evils of construction.’” Most of the neighbors realized that the new home would actually help the value of all the homes in the area, even if it meant living with some noise for a while. “No one has developed the silent hammer yet,” Steven laughed.

Equest rian Fashion In Mot ion What began as a girl dreaming about horses has blossomed into Linda Ballantine’s life. Her enthusiasm for horses grew as Ballantine developed her love for painting. She first put a brush to canvas more than three decades ago, and today she incorporates her two passions into wearable art with the goal of heightening the awareness of the viewer with the intimate life and interactions of her subjects. Wellington The Magazine joined Ballantine and the team at B Studio Art on location at the new Wellington Equestrian Gallery & Mall to photograph some of her extraordinary wearable artwork, featured in our Wellington Fashion pictorial this month. An extra special touch was added to the mix by shoe artist Brittney McNew Stoczynski of Fanchuh Shoes. Models Elizabeth, Ivy, Misty and Tiffany took to the lens in their simple and feminine dresses designed to make the wearer feel elegant in any environment. Whether out and about on the ranch or paired with glitzy jewels and hot heels, these 100 percent silk fashionable collections are perfect for any occasion. In additional to Ballantine’s line of dresses, she offers B’s Wild Rags & Scarves, which can be worn as headbands, tops or around the neck. Fanchuh Shoes are one-of-a-kind and are available by custom order. Ballantine commissioned Stoczynski for a pair to accessorize her “Soul” print. Stoczynski was inspired to create her shoe creation after an unsuccessful shopping trip to find a pair of “different” heels. When she could not find what she wanted, Stoczynski thought, “What better way to get exactly what I am looking for, than to create them myself.” Fanchuh Shoes are custom-made to order and can be of any theme — from political statement shoes to shoes honoring comic book heroes.

(Left) Twins Ivy and Misty playfully intertwine, showcasing front and back of the B’s Liberty dress in bright yellow, perfect for the upcoming spring season.

(Below) Linda Ballantine with one of her latest original oils.

Ballantine’s creative ability captures the passion of horses, cows and wildlife, transforming her canvas in oil paintings and giclées, and offering more than 100 original pieces. She invites you to see them at the Wellington Equestrian Gallery & Mall (13920 Wellington Trace in the Courtyard Shops) or online at www.bstudioart.com. A Salute To

Dressage Wellington is home to some of the most highly anticipated dressage competitions in the world — and Wellington The Magazine is proud to salute this growing, international sport this issue.

High-level dressage in the Wellington area dates back 30 years to the founding of the Palm Beach Dressage Derby. In more recent years, Palm Beach County’s Jim Brandon Equestrian Center has become another local home to dressage events. Jim Brandon hosts the Wellington Classic Dressage and the Gold Coast Dressage Association shows — two circuits that have quickly grown in popularity. The facility is also home to the World Dressage Masters Palm Beach, which kicks off the local dressage season in style each January.

Last year, high-level dressage returned to the heart of Wellington’s equestrian area with the inaugural Global Dressage Festival, run by the same show promoters who run the Winter Equestrian Festival. The festival is back for its second year with lots of additions and great competitions planned for 2013. In this special dressage section, we visit each of these venues before saluting some of the top names in the sport, both here and internationally, in our “Faces of Dressage” pictorial feature.

Palm Beach Dressage Derby Marks 30 Years Of Exciting Competition By Sue Weakley

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Palm Beach Dressage Derby. The inaugural derby took place in 1983 at the Hanover Horse Farm in Loxahatchee. The competition was the first to bring top international judges to Florida, back when the Florida show circuit didn’t exist and the sport of dressage hadn’t really caught on in North America.

years included Mary Alice Malone, Jane Savoie, Lendon Gray, Anne Gribbons, Robert Dover, Gunnar Astergaard and Karin Schlüter. It was an instant hit.

“We are very excited to be celebrating the derby’s 30-year anniversary this year at the IHS Champions Park,” said Noreen O’Sullivan, show manager and IHS managing partner. “This year’s show is sure to be a highlight of the Florida season.”

The initial format of the derby featured the top four riders swapping horses in the tradition of the Hamburg Derby in Germany.

The Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDIW was the brainchild of Gisela and Howald Pferdekaemper, who arrived in Florida from Germany in the 1970s with a band of Hanoverian horses. Although they had a deep appreciation for dressage, they soon discovered that their new neighbors hadn’t yet caught the excitement of this unique Olympic sport.

“It was such a big deal,” recalled Janne Rumbough, an adult amateur rider originally from Denmark who has lived in Wellington since the 1970s. “It has always had a wonderful atmosphere.”

“This was very exciting and brought many spectators to dressage,” Judge Axel Steiner remembered. “If riding up centerline at the derby is accomplishment enough, imagine changing horses and having to do it again with someone else’s mount!” The small show grounds allowed for two international arenas, but in 1999

So, they created a European-type show and Hermés donated the trophies, ribbons and the $5,000 prize for the winner of the grand prix, adding glittering parties and shopping to the experience. “The derby was one of the first dressage shows to offer real prize money and an exciting atmosphere,” said Mary Anne McPhail, the derby’s executive director. the derby moved to the Horse Park at Equestrian Estates in an attempt to provide plenty of room for the international competition as well as national classes. In 2000, the United States Equestrian Federation moved the Olympic selection trials to the derby show grounds after a West Nile virus scare at the trials’ traditional venue in Gladstone, N.J., bringing an air of excitement to the series. In 2009, the park was renamed the

The IHS team has continued the tradition of the derby and expanded the show series to include three international competitions. Petersen, a well-known Danish Olympian, was excited about this year’s

derby, set for Feb. 28 through March 3. “I plan to bring many of my students to the show,” he said. “The derby is truly one of the best shows in Florida and one I always enjoy supporting.” Deborah Darwin, who has been involved with the derby for 16 years, recalls the Olympic selection trials as one of her favorite derby memories. “It was a privilege to host the final 2000 Olympic selection trials,” she said. “Looking down from the second

floor in the office to see the arena packed with thousands of spectators cheering on the riders gave me goose bumps. It’s a memory I will always treasure.” Betsy Berrey, a senior dressage judge who died in 2012, remembered another Olympic trial selection year during an interview on the occasion of the event’s 25th anniversary. “One of my favorite memories was scribing for the Olympic selection trials in 1996 for Volker Moritz,” she said. “We were at the original show grounds in the main ring at B. The judge’s booth was a small wooden hut with a roof but no back or sides. There were torrential rains and high winds and we were huddled in there, trying to keep the tests dry. One of my friends who had a barn nearby saw us, went home and came back with two heavy horse blankets. We draped them around our shoulders and Volker stood behind me, blocking some of the downpour. This went on for two long days, but we did it and laughed about it when our teeth weren’t chattering.” Steiner remembers that chilly, wet derby, saying that they weren’t ready for the cold in South Florida, and that

when the front came through, they bundled up in anything they could find. This year marks the legendary Steiner’s final year as an FEI judge; he has been a fixture at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby for many years. “It was my first exposure to judging with European judges,” Steiner said. “This year is very important for me… I have many, many memories. However, my fondest memories go back to the early days when we officials got to sit in the Pferdekaemper’s great room after a day of judging and had a chance to truly ‘talk shop’ just among us. Many of us actually stayed at the house, so these discussions lasted late into the night.” Steiner believes the derby is perhaps the most important dressage show in Florida. “Even today it probably is still one of the most influential,” he added. “What Devon is in the fall, the derby is in the spring.” Gribbons, another famous judge, agreed that the derby is a special event. “I have been involved with the derby either as a competitor or a judge since its very first run, and I have enjoyed every minute of it,” she said. those involved from the earliest years. “My favorite thing about the derby is the high quality of the judges and the prestige it has if you win at this show,” Rumbough said. Evelyn O’Sullivan, the derby’s past show manager, agreed. “The derby is the oldest competition to bring international judges and riders here. It continues to be a great pleasure for everyone in the industry. It’s a very peaceful and tranquil atmosphere,” she said. “One of the founding ideas of the derby was to provide a top international experience along the lines of what is found in Europe. We are very grateful to all of the Olympiccaliber riders who have supported the show for all of these years. It’s these riders and their special horses that make dressage so wonderful.” The IHS Champions Park features 10 rings on over 50 acres, including 15 acres of parking, 150 horse stalls for international horses and another 200 temporary stalls available for national shows. In 2011, major improvements were made to the facilities in order to provide competitors with superior show conditions. The most important upgrade was the installation of new footing in all of the rings. Other shows at the IHS Champions Park during the season include the International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDIW sponsored by Blue Hors, an international horse breeder located in Denmark, March 21-24, as well as Dressage at Equestrian Estates CDI-3* March 28-31. “Equestrian Estates is where you want to be with three big shows: the Dressage Derby, Champions Cup and Dressage at Equestrian Estates,” Flanagan said. “There is plenty of highperformance dressage coming that should not be missed.” For more info., visit www.ihspb.com.

Global Dressage Festival Brings Sport To The Heart Of Wellington By Lauren Miró

Though still in its infancy, the Adequan Global Dressage Festival has reinvigorated the sport of dressage in Wellington, bringing world-class competition and Olympic-caliber riders right to heart of Wellington’s equestrian community. The festival is one of the world’s top dressage circuits and in 2012 offered more than $275,000 in prize money at more than five international competitions. And this year, all eyes will turn to Wellington as top officials in dressage test out a new format that could change the face of future competition.

promoters behind the Winter Equestrian Festival, launched the Global Dressage Festival in 2012 as a way to bring high-level dressage right to Wellington’s equestrian area. “They had some dressage competition outside of Wellington,” Equestrian Sport Productions President Michael Stone said. “But there was nothing like this. We believed there was an

opportunity to have dressage right in the heart of Wellington. We wanted to do what we were doing with show jumping for dressage.” In the past, dressage had been featured at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center during the Winter Equestrian Festival, but as show jumping expanded, dressage fell to the wayside.

“We tried to do it at the main facility,” Stone said. “But dressage and jumpers don’t go together. It’s too busy with too many people. It needs to be calmer. So we decided to create an independent venue that, over the years, we hope will replicate that of WEF.” Show promoters chose an iconic location — the former site of the Palm Beach Polo stadium, arguably the gateway to Wellington’s equestrian community. The site had been vacant for years after the old stadium was torn down, giving Equestrian Sport Productions a blank slate for an elite dressage facility.

Dubbed Equestrian Village, the 60-acre site on the corner of South Shore Blvd. and Pierson Road gives dressage a permanent home in Wellington and is like no other in the world. “It’s purposefully designed for dressage,” Stone said. “It’s very compact, and it’s very quiet and calm. Riders have the opportunity to work their horses in a quiet arena. They don’t have to walk too far to get to the competition. They can come with their horse, and everything is on site.” The facility features four outdoor arenas, 200 permanent stalls and the

large Van Kampen Arena. “The Van Kampen arena is a great addition to the site,” Stone said. “It gives riders an alternative to practicing in the warm-up arenas, and when it’s raining, they’re able to practice under cover.” The site is designed with dressage in mind, from the fencing to the footing. “The footing is one of the most important parts of the whole thing,” Stone said. “Most dressage venues don’t have this kind of footing throughout their site. For the first time, all riders are able to compete on this world-class footing. From the warm-up to the national ring — even the bridle trails around the facility have nice footing.” After a successful 2012 season, the Global Dressage Festival rose to international acclaim as one of the premier facilities for high-level dressage competition. The show inked a sponsorship deal with Adequan as the title sponsor through 2015. “We really want this festival to end up like WEF,” Stone said. “We want it to be top dressage venue in the U.S., and hopefully among the top venues in the world.” 58 March 2013 |wellington the magazine|

The site offers something no one else in the world has — a public venue dedicated solely to dressage. “A number of dressage facilities tend to be private,” Stone said. “They don’t have horse shows. There are very few, if any, dedicated dressage competition facilities.” This year, there’s plenty to see at the festival, with Wellington hosting the Nations Cup under a new format. “The Nations Cup will take place April 14,” Stone said. “It’s a trial for the Pan American games. The FEI chose us to try out this new format. It will be really important for all the teams from North America and South America. All teams have to practice this new format, so you’ll see a lot of riders participating to get some exposure.”

American riders to Wellington,” Stone said. “The whole purpose is to grow the sport, and the venue is just great. Anyone who comes here and experiences it ends up extending their stay.” Though the Nations Cup will be an exciting event, you can check out the intense competition each Friday and Saturday night under the lights.

This is also a boon for Wellington, which will be attracting new competitors who want to practice the new format before the Pan American games.

“We’re bringing in all the top judges and top competitors from around the world,” Stone said. “It’s going to be a really great season for the community to come out and watch.”

“The reason we’re so excited is because this will bring a lot of new South

The Jim Brandon Equestrian Center Draws Crowds As Popular Dressage Venue By Mary Adelaide Brakenridge

Palm Beach County’s Jim Brandon Equestrian Center has blossomed over the past several years into a premier venue that features top-notch dressage competition, crowd-pleasing events, and opportunities for local riders to train their horses and enjoy trail rides on the property. Part of the Palm Beach County parks system, the facility has a full schedule of year-round events, and dressage riders from across the globe bring their horses to vie for victory in prestigious competitions. The inspiration for the center came when the county sold the Palm Beach County Mounted Posse’s show grounds, where the equestrian group had held shows for decades. The county decided to develop unused land in Okeeheelee Park South into a venue for use by local equestrians. Shelley Van den Neste, an accomplished dressage rider and trainer, was the equestrian facility manager during its construction and helped ensure that the finished venue would be accessible to local riders and also have the potential to bring in toplevel competitors. Hurricanes in 2005 postponed the planned opening of the equestrian center, but the delay had unexpected benefits. An equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) outbreak in Florida in the winter of 2006-07 led to extensive quarantines throughout the area, preventing riders from shipping horses 60

in to compete, but the newly completed Jim Brandon facility, which had officially opened in June 2006, was unaffected by the restrictions. “Jim Brandon was a safe option to let the season begin because it was out of the quarantined zone,” explained John Flanagan, managing partner of Wellington Classic Dressage. “We moved the shows and created a home for dressage.” Jim Brandon’s ability to host shows prompted a general influx of horses and riders planning to compete at other venues. “It opened the door for dressage and gave the green light to people coming in from Canada, the Northeast and the rest of the country,” Flanagan said. “The season started because Gold Coast Dressage ran the first CDI (an internationally recognized dressage competition). If it was safe for dressage, it was safe for everyone.” According to Van den Neste, the initial CDI competition jump-started Wellington Classic Dressage and Gold Coast Dressage. “We were able to modify the show grounds to have a CDI there,” she said. “It confirmed that riders would come, and that we could host a CDI. So we booked all the Wellington Classic Dressage and Gold Coast Dressage shows in there for the next three years.” Now in its seventh show season, Jim Brandon has established an impressive calendar that includes top events such as January’s World Dressage Masters CDI5* Palm Beach. Many competitions at the facility draw top dressage riders

from around the world. The schedule heats up in the winter, as Wellington Classic Dressage (WCD) and the Gold Coast Dressage Association (GCDA) team up to offer competitive opportunities on a weekly basis throughout January and on several weekends from February through April. In all, the two groups host more than 19 weeks of national-level dressage and five international CDI competitions at Jim Brandon. In January 2013, Jim Brandon played host to the inaugural Global Dressage Forum North America, which brought dressage enthusiasts from all over the United States, Canada and Europe to the facility for a series of lectures and demonstrations with world-renowned riders, trainers and judges. Shows are free and open to spectators, who can enjoy the view from the ringside grandstands. At major events, shopping opportunities abound. “All the shows will be great for spectators and competitors,” WCD Show Manager Noreen O’Sullivan said. “The upcoming shows will feature high performance dressage.” The spring schedule features the Challenge of the Americas, an exciting event that appeals to seasoned equestrians and newcomers to the horse world alike. The March 9 equine extravaganza brings together top American and international equestrians to showcase the sport of dressage, all while raising money for breast cancer research.

Designed to entertain, the event includes thrilling reining freestyles and elegant team dressage performances set to music. After the competition, guests may attend the Challenge Gala, an evening of dinner and dancing. The gala includes an awards presentation and opportunities to socialize with the distinguished riders and judges. Held in conjunction with Challenge of the Americas is the Wellington Classic Challenge II CDI1*/NAJYRC, a dressage competition featuring internationally recognized classes as well as qualifying events for the FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships. Other highlights of the 2013 spring calendar include the Gold Coast Grand Finale I & II (April 13-14) and the Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge III (April 27-28). Along with hosting competitions, the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center provides a variety of opportunities to local riders on a year-round basis. 62 March 2013 |wellington the magazine|

As long as no event is scheduled, two lighted riding rings remain open for use on a first-come, first-served basis. One of these is a high rail Western arena with deep footing, while the other has a regular footing depth for all-purpose use. The main show grounds, which can accommodate horse shows, dog shows, clinics and other educational events, are available for use by permit. The facility includes a covered arena, three training rings and two show arenas, as well as stabling, offices and related amenities. Jim Brandon’s extensive trails are a highlight for devoted trail riders or those just seeking a relaxing excursion with their horses. Eight miles of trails wind around the park, offering many options for short hacks or lengthy rides. Other amenities open to the public include a shade pavilion, a picnic pavilion, a general purpose building that may be used for meetings, restrooms and ample space for trailer

parking. The park is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset. “What’s currently going on is much greater than anybody thought would ever happen,” Van den Neste said. “Expectations [for the facility] were way lower than what’s happening now, and I personally feel that they can grow with it. Noreen [O’Sullivan] and John [Flanagan] have been instrumental in helping out and sponsoring many of the additions.” Van den Neste added that the success of the facility surpassed even her own high hopes. “It exceeded our wildest dreams,” she said. The Jim Brandon Equestrian Center is located at Okeeheelee Park South, 7500 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach. For more information, call (561) 966-7090. Swedish Olympians Claim Top Honors At The 2013 World Dressage Masters Palm Beach Swedish Olympians Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven and Patrik Kittel were the big winners at the 2013 World Dressage Masters Palm Beach CDI5* held Jan. 24-26 at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center. Vilhelmson-Silfven and Don Auriello took the championship in the Grand Prix Freestyle, while Kittel and Watermill Scandic H B C took second. The previous day, they swapped spots when Kittel placed first in the Grand Prix and Vilhelmson-Silfven took second. In the freestyle, Vilhelmson-Silfven and Don Auriello, an 11-year-old bay Hanoverian gelding owned by Lovsta Stuteri, rode the momentum from an enthusiastic crowd to claim the championship. She collected a personal best score of 84.075%. “It’s just such an honor to ride a horse like Don Auriello,” she said. “He is so much fun to ride. He was enjoying himself with me, enjoying the time, enjoying the energy. It was a great atmosphere.” Kittel, Sweden’s No. 1 rider, and Watermill Scandic H B C, his own 14-year-old chestnut KWPN stallion, scored 82.525% for their freestyle. Their high placing capped a successful string of performances. Along with their Grand Prix victory, they also took home wins in the Gold Coast Opener CDI-W Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle Jan. 18-20. Kittel is a big fan of the World Dressage Masters. “It’s an amazing show,” he explained. “We’ve been treated so well here. The people here are friendly, the crowd is really nice, lovely weather. What more can you want?” The two Swedish riders defeated two-time WDM Palm Beach champion Steffen Peters, who notched third place finishes for the United States with 80.175% in the freestyle and a 75.149% in the grand prix. Heather Blitz and Paragon took the fourth place spots in both. In Saturday’s Grand Prix Special, Mikala Gundersen added a WDM victory to a growing list of accomplishments at Jim Brandon Equestrian Center this winter. Gundersen, a Danish rider based in Wellington, rode My Lady, a 13-year-old Danish Warmblood mare owned by Janne Rumbough. James Koford and Rhett placed second, while Jacqueline Brooks aboard D Niro claimed third.

Faces Of

Dressage Wellington is known for some of the world’s top equestrian sports, and local dressage competition is among the best anywhere. Often referred to as “dancing with horses” or “horse ballet,” dressage celebrates the blending of rider and horse in perfect unity. Translated literally, “dressage” means training, and some of the top professional riders train for years to achieve success. The ease and grace with which the horse and rider make their way around the arena can leave you breathless. This month, Wellington The Magazine celebrates dressage riders in this Faces of Dressage feature section.

Robert Dover As the most honored dressage rider in the United States, Robert Dover’s name is synonymous with the sport here in Wellington. Dover has been competing in dressage since age 19. But he is also a trainer and philanthropist, founding the Equestrian Aid Foundation in 1996. He was on the U.S. Olympic Equestrian Team for every summer Olympic Games between 1984 and 2004, taking home four team bronze medals. He also served as captain of the U.S. Dressage Team all six times he competed. In 1987, Dover defeated six-time Olympic gold medalist Reiner Klimke to be the first American in 27 years to win the German Aachen Grand Prix freestyle competition. He has more than 100 Grand Prix victories in his career and has ridden in the FEI World Cup Final seven times. In 2008, he was inducted into the United States Dressage Federation Hall of Fame. Dover retired from competition in 2009 but continues to train at Stillpoint Farm in Wellington. |wellingtonthe themagazine| magazine|March March2013 2013 |wellington

Todd Flettrich

Todd Flettrich Todd Flettrich rose to fame aboard Otto, a Danish Warmblood owned by Cherry Knoll Farms. A native of Louisiana, his career began at age 12 before being hired by a dressage rider who helped fuel his interest in the sport. Flettrich worked his way up and, at age 22, began competing in the Open FEI ranks. In 1999, Flettrich placed first, second and third in fourth level dressage at Devon. He made his Grand Prix debut in 2004. But it was in 2009 that he was paired with Otto, and the pair took off. In 2010, they represented the U.S. at the World Equestrian Games. They were also selected as alternates for the 2012 London Olympic Games. Though Otto retired before traveling to London, Flettrich is continuing to compete in Wellington this season aboard several mounts and should be one rider to watch this year. |wellingtonthe themagazine| magazine|March March2013 2013 |wellington

Anky Van Grunsven One of the most decorated dressage riders of our time, Anky Van Grunsven got her start riding at a young age and turned professional after high school. A Dutch rider, she has been in the medals at every Olympic Games since 1992. She captured individual gold medals in 2000, 2004 and 2008, taking home individual silver in 1996 and helping the Netherlands to several team silver and bronze medals over her career. Van Grunsven is the first rider to ever win three consecutive individual gold medals on different mounts. She began her career in the Netherlands, sweeping up national titles in the early 1990s. In 1994, she took home the World Championship title in musical freestyle dressage, and the next year took home her first World Cup final. She has since won the World Cup six more times. In addition to training and judging, Van Grunsven also owns a clothing line. |wellingtonthe themagazine| magazine|March March2013 2013 |wellington

Courtney King-Dye

Story by Deborah Welky Photos by Susan J. Stickle

Accident Turns Olympic Rider Into A Helmet Safety Activist On March 3, 2010, 32-year-old dressage rider and instructor Courtney King-Dye was training a horse when it suddenly tripped over its own feet and stumbled to the ground. The 1,500-pound animal landed on top of her, fracturing her skull, and King-Dye went into a coma.

Courtney King Dye at a Paralympic event.

A month later, the former Olympian (Beijing, 2008) miraculously emerged, although all four lobes of her brain had been impacted — the frontal lobe (reasoning, motor skills, cognition), the parietal lobe (eye gaze, language), the occipital lobe (word, object and color recognition) and the temporal lobe (speech and memory). “I remember nothing from three days before the accident,” King-Dye said. “When I first came out of the coma, I couldn’t breathe on my own. Couldn’t make noise. Had a stomach tube.” So King-Dye went to work, applying the same perseverance that had taken her to the Beijing Olympics to the rehabilitation process. But it was slow going, and she was often frustrated. “When I became tube-free, I had no neck control,” recalled King-Dye, a part-time Wellington resident. “My head would loll to the side. I would drool. I had to relearn to eat.” But she was nothing if not determined. King-Dye signed on with the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in New Jersey and got to work. The Kessler Institute, designated a model system by the National Institute of Disability Rehabilitation and Research, had the resources to address the entire range of physical and functional challenges facing King-Dye — everything from swallowing to vision problems, from |wellington |wellington the the magazine| magazine| March March 2013 2013

balance to pain management. “People can understand eating and writing, but those are hard. I can’t carry a cup of liquid, pick up a pill and put it in my mouth,” said King-Dye, who also struggles to turn off a light switch. Yet if one thing can be said about Olympic-level athletes it’s this — they’re not a bunch of whiners. “Stuff happens,” said King-Dye, who graduated from Columbia University with a degree in literature prior to her accident. “I got my degree from Columbia ‘in case something happened.’ Well, it has!” Today, King-Dye writes articles for a dressage magazine in addition to teaching dressage. On top of teaching her own students, she teaches clinics around the country and gives inspirational talks. She’s also one of the founders of Emerging Dressage Athletes, a yearlong series of youth clinics. Instead of playing the blame game, athletes such as King-Dye confront problems and work to solve them. So even though dressage riders worldwide are identified by their elegant top hats — and seldom wear those while training a horse — King-Dye knew that, in her case, wearing a proper rider’s helmet would have offered a layer of protection. “I was wearing a baseball cap!” she said. Today, King-Dye is an integral part of Riders4Helmets.com. The group’s goal is to educate equestrians about the importance of wearing a certified, properly fitted and secured helmet whenever working with horses. “Riders4Helmets has expanded to an international audience and has saved many lives,” she said. “My accident brought the topic of safety to the forefront. It was the catalyst to make several countries’ federations implement new rules.”

In January 2011, the United States Equestrian Federation rules were changed to require that anyone on a horse wear an approved helmet at all times “while mounted on competition grounds at U.S. nationally rated eventing competitions.” Sara Ike, then USEF managing director of eventing, said, “Dressage riders called the Courtney King accident their 9/11.”

still can’t eat with that hand or write intelligibly with it. So I’ve made an immense amount of progress, but still have a long way to go.”

Those rules will soon apply at dressage competitions as well. As of April 1, the USEF will mandate protective headgear for anyone mounted on the grounds at all USEF dressage competitions.

King-Dye qualified for the U.S. Paralympic Team Selection trials for London 2012 but decided to wait, aiming instead to qualify for the World Equestrian Games 2014. Last year she flew to Turkey to accept the “Against All Odds” award from the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI).

Now 35, King-Dye has made monumental progress, although she still cannot do anything with her right hand. “My speech is totally comprehensible but far from normal,” she said. “I certainly can’t walk independently, have to sit in the shower and lie down to get dressed. I’m normally right-hand dominant, but I

Perhaps as traumatic as the brain injury itself is the fact that little of King-Dye’s rehabilitation costs are covered by insurance. But forgoing rehab is hardly an option. It is her lifeline, her job.

Princess Haya, president of the FEI, addressed an audience of more than 300 guests, including representatives of the FEI’s 132 member federations, FEI sponsors and Turkish VIPs, saying: “The FEI Awards were launched in

This year’s winners have demonstrated talent, commitment, generosity and courage.” King-Dye is circumspect about the accident that radically changed her life. “It’s easy for people to be saddened by what I lost, but I’m grateful for all I have. The reaction to my accident was phenomenal — countless people wore ‘Come Back Court’ bracelets, and I’d received over 7,000 e-mails from all over the world by the time I could read them,” she said. “Because the public was so caring during the time of my accident, I keep a blog on my web site (www.ckddressage.com) to take them on the whole journey if they want to go with me. I continue to receive countless e-mails thanking me for keeping it and telling me how it helped them.” It is that uplifting attitude that makes her story all the more amazing. “The accident stole my career — it’s not going to steal my happiness, too,” she said. “I have a great many things to be thankful for — an incredible husband, an amazing family and friends, a public who cares so deeply. Show Jumping Star Margie Engle

Back From Injury, Wellington Icon Sees A Bright Future Ahead By Rebecca Walton

Wellington’s own Margie Engle has stood out in her impressive show jumping career over the last three decades. She is one of the winningest riders in the history of show jumping, earning the coveted AGA Rider of the Year title 10 times, winning six world cups and 20 nations cups between 1984 and 2005, and representing the United States at Olympic and Pan Am games on numerous occasions.

by Griese, Garber, Hidden Creek and Gladwinds. At 54 years old, her career shows no signs of slowing down as her two top mounts, Indigo and Royce, continue to add victories to her list. “As long as I can do it and I am feeling OK, and the horses aren’t telling me that I’m messing them up too bad, I hope to do it as long as I can,” Engle said.

“We hadn’t had a national championship in a long time, and it was kind of exciting to have it here in Wellington,” Engle said. “Indigo is owned by a group of people, so it was nice for them to be able to see him go. I was really happy with how he jumped. I thought it was very demanding and very big courses. A couple of the nights were as big as anything I’ve done, even internationally.”

In 2012, Engle competed on her home turf during the Winter Equestrian Festival to capture the co-national championship aboard Indigo, owned

Yet last year proved to be a bit of a roller coaster ride for Engle, whose victory in the USEF National Championships was a major highlight.

Later in the summer, though, Engle suffered a setback when she broke her ankle and fibula on her right leg while schooling a catch ride. Margie Engle rides Indigo at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington. Photo By Kenneth Kraus

“Indigo ended up getting most of the year off because I had hurt my ankle on another horse,” she explained. “I missed half the year being out with the injury. I damaged the bones and the soft tissue in my ankle. I really missed being away from it. I was able to go to the shows and help my students, but that’s probably the longest period of time I’ve not ridden in over 30 years.” Although Engle missed being in the saddle through the late summer and fall, her return to the ring proved to be triumphant. She placed fifth with Indigo in the $85,000 FEI World Cup Qualifier at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show after producing a double clear effort in October, and then went on to place third in the $50,000 Holiday & Horses FEI World Cup Qualifier with Royce in Wellington. Royce, owned by Elm Rock Partners LLC, is a young horse purchased for Engle at the end of 2011. Engle spent the winter season building a partnership with the young horse, and by the summer, they had already notched a couple of big wins at HITSOn-The-Hudson. “It’s hard to find those kinds of horses,” Engle said. “Royce had been one I had been interested in for a long time, but his owner didn’t really want to sell him. I always liked him. He’s very careful, and he has got a huge jump. I had been looking for something that was a little bit older for the big classes, but potential-wise, at his young age, he’s already doing some big classes. I thought he was a very exciting horse to watch, and he had plenty of room to spare over the jumps.”

With the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival in full swing, Engle and her team are excited for a great season at the prestigious competition. “You get to gain a lot of experience

When we first purchased Royce, you looked at him and saw his amazing raw athleticism. It’s a huge honor and opportunity for us to own this horse. Dr. Vincent Dolce Offering PRP Facial Rejuvenation Story by Ron Bukley  Photo by Abner Pedraza

Dr. Vincent Dolce has added a new technique to his facial rejuvenation services. It uses the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma, known as PRP, to fill facial lines and restore a youthful texture.

member of the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, an organization created by dentists especially for the use of Botox. His special training in this area has taught him exactly how to implement the procedure.

A dentist by profession, Dolce’s practice also offers numerous methods designed for facial restoration. “PRP has been used in dentistry for 20 years,” he said. “We place it around implants, and it helps heal.”

With a recent patient, Dolce used PRP in the neck and cheek areas and as filler for the lips. He also did dental work to straighten her smile. “The texture of the skin is changed,” he said. “She’s 60 years old. When you run your hand over her face, it feels more like a baby’s.”

The procedure takes advantage of platelets’ natural healing power. “When you cut yourself, the platelets go to the area and bring all the healing factors to accelerate the healing process,” he explained. Dolce uses a specialized centrifuge to separate platelets from blood. “If you use an improper centrifuge, you actually damage the platelets. There is a whole science behind it. This is the only machine that will give me PRP,” he said of the Angel PRP System by Cytomedix. Dolce said his hair transplantologist got him interested in PRP. “Every time he transplants someone’s hair, he uses PRP to decrease shedding,” he said. “If someone’s hair is thinning, they actually inject it underneath the scalp and it helps promote hair growth.” Celebrities, including Angelina Jolie and Kim Kardashian, have undergone the process. Athletes, especially football and basketball players, receive PRP injections for injured joints. Dolce often uses the PRP treatment in conjunction with other restorative treatments, such as Botox. He is a

takes two to five or six weeks before you start to see some changes. It takes time because the collagen has to be stimulated.” Dolce cautioned that patients receiving the treatment must not take any kind of anti-inflammatory because it will stop the necessary response PRP sets up. “The platelets activate an inflammatory response underneath the skin,” he said. Dr. Vincent Dolce’s office is located at 9897 Lake Worth Road, in the Woods Walk Plaza. For more information about PRP and other procedures, visit www.drvincentdolce. com or call (561) 966-2000.

Two or three PRP treatments are recommended to get the proper response. “I use it like a filler because it stimulates an inflammatory response. It actually builds up collagen in your face, and then we take a roller called a Dermaroller,” he said. “We paint that blood on the face and it rejuvenates the skin, so it’s a double whammy. It stimulates all the skin to regenerate and become more youthful.” The procedure is also largely painless. “I numb up the face, so that when I inject it and roll it, patients won’t feel anything,” Dolce said. “When they leave, the numbness goes away just like a dental appointment, but nobody feels pain afterward because the platelets stop the pain.” The only drawback is that PRP doesn’t work immediately. “Some men and women, when they get work done, they want to see it today,” he said. “It |wellington the magazine| March 2013

Carol Sollak Joins Engel & Völkers Real Estate Story by Deborah Welky  Photo by Abner Pedraza

If Carol Sollak’s name sounds familiar, it could be because she and her husband, Ludwig, have been selling real estate in Wellington for two decades — or then again, perhaps it’s because you were a patron of their legendary Jalapeno Harry’s bar and restaurant “back in the day.” “I started in real estate almost 18 years ago,” Sollak recalled. “My whole family is in it — mother, father, sister and husband. When I closed the restaurant, I found that I missed being around people. It was just natural for me to go right into real estate. I got my license and sold a house that afternoon.” Sollak’s specialty is farms and equestrian properties. She sells in Palm Beach Polo, the Equestrian Club, Grand Prix Village and throughout Wellington. “I grew up in Wellington since I was 14, and I’m 47 now,” she said. “I’ve lived in Polo for 25 years. Wellington is a great community.”

come to me, asking me to open an office or come to their office, to have their name associated with mine. But I liked everything Engel & Völkers was offering, and I saw I could offer more to my clients than I could with any other company. Once I met them, I knew it was going to be a perfect match. They were a step above the others, and I’m always looking to make sure my clients have the best that is out there.” Ludwig, her husband of 25 years, takes care of things at the office so Sollak can be out selling. “We’re a really good combination,” she said. To contact Sollak, call (561) 793-0677 or (561) 818-9476, visit www.carolsollak.com or drop by the office at 13501 South Shore Blvd., Suite 103 in Wellington.

Until the end of 2012, Sollak was with Illustrated Properties, and named by The Wall Street Journal as “one of the Top 100 Real Estate Agents in the U.S.” On the first of this year, she switched to Engel & Völkers, best known as the largest up-and-coming luxury real-estate company in Europe with U.S. franchises in Connecticut, New York, California and more. The new brokerage debuted with more than 75 listings, including a $26.9 million private horse stable in Grand Prix Village. Sollak is opening a second office in Palm Beach this coming August. “My entire focus is Wellington,” she said. “I wanted to give my clients a bit more. I’m always looking to increase my knowledge, and the potential for my clients to sell or buy, and Engel & Völkers was the perfect fit. They’re a top-notch organization and very tech-savvy — a really, really good brand.” One thing Sollak likes about what Engel & Völkers offers is that every listing gets worldwide exposure through every international and American Engel & Völkers office, not just the local multiple listing service. “There is also an Engel & Völkers app for your phone — something that no one else does,” she said. Engel & Völkers sought out Sollak through her business partner, Amy Carr. “I was consistently the top producer in all of Wellington year after year, and one of the top 50 in the U.S.,” Sollak said. “I’ve had a lot of different companies |wellington the magazine| March 2013

MARY & TONY ALFALLA

Couple Well-Known For Their Work With The Wellington Seniors Club Story by Matthew Auerbach Photos by Abner Pedraza

The road to volunteerism is a personal one. Each person’s journey is different, yet the destination is often the same. Sometimes, the path to helping others is traveled with someone by your side. Such is the case with Mary and Tony Alfalla. Since 2006, they have been involved with the Wellington Seniors Club, providing recreational, cultural and civic opportunities to the community’s older residents. They are this month’s nominees for Wellington The Magazine’s Volunteer of the Year award. For the Alfallas, it all started across the Atlantic in London, England. “The company where I was employed for 10 years (a magazine publishing company) decided to close their Connecticut and New York offices and make their office in London,” Mary recalled. “I was asked to go there to teach employees the new computer system being initiated by the company, with the understanding that I could stay in London permanently if I chose to do so, or terminate my employment when the teaching was done.” It was there that Mary and Tony met. “The first day of my arrival, I met Tony, who also worked for the company,” she said. “We got together several times and enjoyed each other’s company, and I guess we felt that fate had brought us together and our relationship would

become more than just friendship in the future.” A fortuneteller couldn’t have predicted their future more clearly. After leaving London six months later — three months after Tony, who, with his three daughters from a previous marriage, had returned to the U.S. to take a job with the Department of Agriculture in New York — Mary returned to her home state of Connecticut. It was around that time Tony was transferred to Puerto Rico, where he was born. “We survived a long-distance courtship,” Mary said. “We were married in Puerto Rico with our combined family of Tony’s girls (Lynn, Debbie and Lenise) and my son, Bobby, in attendance.” During their time in Puerto Rico, their son, Brent, was born. But island life wouldn’t last. “Tony was transferred to Maryland, where he served as a physical security specialist,” Mary said. “We spent the next 20 years there raising our kids. We did a lot of volunteering during that time as baseball coaches, assistant coaches, Cub Scout den mother, Cub Scout leader, PTA members and anything else that was necessary, including driving six of our son’s fellow high school baseball teammates from Maryland to Florida so they could participate in the Junior Olympics.”

Mary believes she and Tony get back more than they give through volunteering. “These jobs may keep us very busy, but it sure beats being couch potatoes and growing old too fast,” she said. “Volunteering makes many things happen for many people in many different ways. I feel it is a wonderful way to give back for all the opportunities, success and happiness that God has given me.” |wellington the magazine| March 2013

wellington volunteer During that time, Mary held a job that would come in very handy later on in her work at the Wellington Seniors Club. “I was an accountant/office manager for 10 years,” she said. “In addition to those duties, I planned all social functions and parties.” Her employment ended after she had a heart attack in 1991, at the age of 49. In 1994, a few months after Tony, a 16-year veteran of the Air Force, retired, they moved to the suburbs of Orlando. “Our son, Brent, was attending Palm Beach Atlantic University at the time,” Mary said. “We often visited the Palm Beach area to see him. Over the next five years, we made many trips to see Brent and finally realized we loved the area. We decided to leave the Orlando area and move to Wellington. To this day, we are very happy we made that decision.”

March 2013 |wellington the magazine|

The Alfallas suffered a devastating loss in 2004, when Bobby passed away. “We went to Connecticut in 2002 because he was ill and needed our help,” Mary said. “What we thought would be a few weeks turned into two years. After returning to Wellington, we had to get involved in something and keep busy, so we joined the Wellington Seniors Club, hoping it might fill the void in our lives.” Becoming members of the club did more than provide the couple with a way to deal with their loss. It opened up a whole other side to life in Wellington. “We enjoyed the club immensely and were very active members as trip leaders and assisting with social functions,” Mary said. “We were part of Sunny Meyer’s musical variety shows, in which approximately 20 members performed annually.”

The year 2010 was a big one for the Alfallas. “I became acting president of the club to fill the void left by the former president, who had accepted employment with the Village of Wellington,” Tony said. “In November of that year, I was elected president by the board of directors. I preside over executive board meetings and general membership meetings and oversee the operating of the club.” Mary took over the dual roles of social chair/trips coordinator. She began organizing lunches for monthly membership meetings. She’s also a member of the board of directors, but there’s one position she’s most proud of. “I can claim to be the personal secretary to the president,” she said, laughing. Seniors Club has brought a great deal of satisfaction to them both. “I never see a paycheck, but the rewards are enormous,” Mary said. “That is why I enjoy doing what I do. Many of our seniors would not be able to do so many of the wonderful things we offer through the Seniors Club, and when so many personally thank you or go out of their way to call or write you, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.” “Volunteering gives you the opportunity to give back to the community while making the lives of other people better,” Tony said. “I enjoy doing something worthwhile for other seniors. It keeps me busy and mentally alert. There is no monetary reward in volunteering. The reward comes from those who show appreciation in what we try to do.” Mary believes she and Tony get back more than they give through volunteering. “These jobs may keep us very busy, but it sure beats being couch potatoes and growing old too fast,” she said. “Volunteering makes many things happen for many people in many different ways. Saddle Trail Estate Features Large Home With Equestrian Amenities Story by Lauren Miró Photos courtesy David A. Welles

This 6.4-acre estate in Wellington’s Saddle Trail community is an equestrian paradise. The threebedroom, 3.5-bath home is recently updated and features an open floor plan as well as a large covered porch for entertaining. Located only minutes from the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, the property features a 16-stall, center-aisle barn with a two-bedroom, 1.5-bath trainer’s apartment on site. There are also five oversized paddocks, a sand arena and jumping field. The home is accessed by a private, circular drive with a separate entrance for barn traffic.

Living Room - The open and airy living room has plenty of space for entertaining. It features marble floors, high ceilings and recessed lighting, but gets plenty of natural light from the large windows and French doors that line the room. Porch - The long, screened porch extends the length of the back of the house and is accessed by the many French doors that can be opened for a light, airy breeze throughout the house. There is ample space for seating or entertaining. Master Suite - The large master suite boasts wood floors that extend into a large sitting area. The French doors let plenty of natural light into the room, and also provide access to the porch. The sitting area also overlooks the riding area, providing a great vantage point. Dining Room - Located off the kitchen, the formal dining space is set off by a stunning red ceiling that helps set the tone for the eclectic space. There space easily accommodates a large dining table and buffet, while a beautiful chandelier helps anchor the room. Kitchen - The kitchen offers tons of space for cooking and storage. There is an island stove with steel hood, stainless steel appliances and cabinets featuring an organizational storage system. There is also a breakfast area with table and chairs, making it a wonderful family space.

There’s room for expansion, as the property could accommodate as large as a 26-stall barn. There is also an impressive step-up apartment with two bedrooms ideal for a trainer or other staff.

Fresh, Contemporary American Cuisine On The Menu At Cafe Fifty2 Story by Lauren Miró Photos by Abner Pedraza

For a great taste of contemporary American cuisine, the new Cafe Fifty2 serves up dishes with a delicious twist. Tucked away in the back of the Wellington Plaza, Cafe Fifty2 is committed to serving great quality food 52 weeks a year. Owner and chef Wally Houssin is no stranger to Wellington eateries. He was the original owner of the popular Soho Café. “He was the original owner. He had a huge following here in Wellington,” Marketing Director Jasmin Houssin said. “Every time someone would see him, they would ask him when he was going to open a new place.” Jasmin explained that the name Cafe Fifty2 was chosen because of the desire to serve up delicious food

year-round. “Our slogan is, ‘Because everyone deserves great food year-round,’” she said. “There are too many chain restaurants in Wellington, and it’s hard to find quality food around here.” Wally is an accomplished chef who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York. He went on to train with renowned chef Wolfgang Puck and has been executive chef in several restaurants both in New York and Florida. “Being in the business for more than 30 years, I’ve picked out some of the best items from what I’ve made in my career,” he said. “When you come in here, you feel like you’re in a fine dining restaurant, but you’re not breaking the bank.”

Cafe Fifty2 held its grand opening in February and is now open for lunch and dinner. It is a great place for a date, family dinner or casual lunch. The atmosphere during the day is bright and airy with a modern feel. The restaurant is elegantly decorated with light green walls that invoke a natural, earthy feel. But at night, the ambiance changes. “Dinner has a completely different feel to it than lunch,” Jasmin said. “Lunch is more casual, but dinner is candle lit with linen napkins. There is a romantic feel to it, but not so much that you couldn’t bring your entire family.” While the atmosphere makes you glad you came, the food will make you never want to leave. Jasmin

wellington table described the food as contemporary American. “You have a lot of classic dishes,” she said. “But we put our own spin on them.” Wally said he tries to keep the menu unique and make each plate of food its own experience in dining. “When you go to some restaurants, you see the same thing over and over,” he said. “I try to make things different. I make my own white balsamic vinaigrette. Some people have never heard of it.” From burgers and wraps to salads, seafood and beyond, the freshly made dishes will leave you feeling satisfied but not stuffed. “It’s healthy, but at the same time there’s comfort food on the menu as well,” Jasmin said. “Everything from vegetarian dishes to salads, sandwiches, quesadillas, or burgers and fries.” One favorite choice is the house-made chips. “They’re addictive,” Jasmin said. “They’re crispy on the outside and soft in the middle.”

Everything is made in house, from the chips to the salad dressings — the white vinaigrette dressing is a must-try. While the lunch menu is stacked with delicious salads, sandwiches and more, dinner shows off the full breadth of Wally Houssin’s cooking. “There’s a little bit of everything,” Jasmin explained. “There’s amazing seafood dishes, pasta, prime rib and crab cakes. The crab cakes are the most popular.” Indeed, the crab cakes are delicious. You can choose to have them in a meal or as an appetizer. The appetizer portion is served in three mini crab cakes and three sauces — a tangy coffee and cilantro barbecue, a mango pineapple chutney and a chipotle. The dish is flavorful, with each sauce complementing the delicious, perfectlycooked crab cake. Wally said that the different flavors help to excite the customer’s palate. “Sometimes your mouth gets used to one flavor,” he said. “This keeps the flavors fresh.” If there’s one common theme in the food, it’s fresh, bold flavors. The

almond-crusted goat cheese salad is a prime example of this. The goat cheese is set atop a bed of leafy greens, strawberries and oranges. One bite packs a punch of flavor, from the creamy goat cheese and crunchy almonds to the burst of orange that will keep you wanting more. Or try the goat cheese flat bread. The delicious bread is topped with arugula, peppers vinaigrette and goat cheese for a perfect appetizer or light meal. For something more substantial, try the seared ahi tuna. The tuna is cooked to perfection and melts in your mouth. It’s served with a house-made ajus-like sauce that really makes the dish sing. For dessert, you must try the crème brulee trio — three small dishes of original, chocolate and orange crème brulee that make the perfect end for any meal. No matter what you choose, you’re bound to have a delicious meal that will keep you coming back for more. Cafe Fifty2 is located at 12785 W. Forest Hill Blvd. in the Wellington Plaza. For more information, call (561) 429-6870.
