Although happening slowly, real estate is on the move again in Wellington. This issue we take a look at the trendy new rental complexes springing up, as well as some of the new construction projects underway by area builders. As we examine the real estate climate, how can we not think of the leaders who manage many of Wellington’s real estate firms. We created a special “Wellington Broker” section in this month’s issue, where we take a personal look at some of the industry’s top local leaders. In our September cover feature, philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates share some of their foundation’s latest accomplishments, along with a look back at the history of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. With much speculation about a recent Gates home purchase in Wellington — which was neither confirmed nor denied — one thing is for sure, the family knows how to make a difference in the lives of many. We look forward to seeing them out and about at the Winter Equestrian Festival again this year, where daughter Jennifer has ridden for the past several seasons. JustWorld International has become more than a name and a vision in the equestrian world. This month, we hear about how Wellington resident Jessica Newman, an avid equestrian and former competitor, created a link between the equestrian world and JustWorld’s humanitarian efforts by providing opportunities for equestrians to help those less fortunate. This unique nonprofit is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

The Wellington High School Dance Team and Kelly Dennis hosted “Make a Move Benefit: Remembering Neda” on Thursday, Aug. 1 in the Wellington High School auditorium to honor Dennis’ late mother Neda Kucich, a victim of cancer. Members of the 2013-14 WHS dance team, dance team alums and dance students performed. There was a silent auction, 50-50 raffle and a bake sale. The first Cpl. Michael D’Alessandro Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Wellington High School graduate Jessica Costan on Friday, Aug. 9. The scholarship is named for D’Alessandro, a soldier who died last year. The ceremony was held at the Wellington home of Lori and Gary Barlettano, D’Alessandro’s parents. Costan was chosen out of many applicants to receive $4,000 to assist with her expenses to attend Florida State University.

Before you leave, I’ll teach you a stretch that decreases that ‘pouch’ at your beltline, and there are a few vitamins that are so obvious for you to start with (but safe to take too).” “But what about that IV therapy that Jena told me about?” “When patients are really sick, or are trying to get the most optimal results yesterday, I do offer injections of vitamins, minerals, glutathione, and other nutrients. For example, iron injections rapidly help hair growth, brittle nails, fatigue, memory/concentration, and muscle cramps (restless legs).” Celeste’s testing did show causes for all her symptoms and on her second visit, a plan specific to her was put in place. Three months later, she was glowing and her visits were now spaced out to where she only had to be seen once every six months. “Next week you get to see both my husband and daughter. Consultant Reports On Village Issues A consultant hired by the Wellington Village Council to evaluate issues in the village reported last month that although Wellington has a strong reputation, lack of trust and communication among village officials has contributed to division. Council members agreed in June to hire Chris McLean, a consultant from the Center for Leadership Studies, to evaluate issues that led some council members to call for the firing of Village Manager Paul Schofield. Mayor Bob Margolis asked to have an independent view of the issues before making a decision. In a preliminary overview released by McLean in August, he outlines some of the issues in the village, including “unresolved animosity from [the] election,” a “fractured council with no consensus” and “broken trust between staff and council.” McLean met with Wellington officials, including council members and senior management. The preliminary report is an overview of the information he gleaned. The report states that there is a “deteriorated culture” among staff, which has caused feelings of “lack of appreciation,” “loss of camaraderie” and “loss of job security.” It’s not all bad news. McLean found that Wellington has an “excellent reputation of services.” He suggested that council members and senior management each have their own workshops to focus on the issues — the first council workshop was held Thursday, Aug. 22. Equestrian Village Update — Though the 2014 Global Dressage Festival is set, it will be October before permanent plans for the future of the controversial Equestrian Village site are in place. The property owners, Wellington Equestrian Partners, agreed earlier this year to resubmit several key applications that could allow for horse shows on the site year-round. Approval of the items also could cease litigation between Wellington and WEP. “Right now, we’re working with the applicant on refining the conditions for the master plan and

compatibility determination,” Planning & Development Services Director Tim Stillings said. If Equestrian Village is given a commercial equestrian arena designation, show promoters will not have to return each year before the Wellington Village Council for a special-use permit for the shows. “They would need a special-use permit if they were doing non-equestrian-related events,” Stillings said. First, the items must face the scrutiny of Wellington’s advisory boards. “It’s tentatively scheduled to go before the Equestrian Preserve Committee in September and the Planning, Zoning & Adjustment Board in October,” Stillings said. “We’re targeting the second meeting in October for it to go before the council.” Wellington Might Open Fridays — Some Wellington departments could be going back to a five-day workweek as part of an effort to provide better customer service on Fridays. At a recent budget workshop, members of the Wellington Village Council asked staff to look into the cost of moving some departments back to working five days. Wellington enacted a four-day workweek three years ago in an effort to curb costs. It was largely successful, but some council members remain concerned that residents can’t get help on Fridays. “Do you have any opinion whether customer service would be improved by going back to five days?” Vice Mayor Howard Coates asked. Village Manager Paul Schofield said he hadn’t heard many complaints but was considering it. “Going back to a five-day workweek has been an item of serious discussion,” he said. Schofield said one option was to have customer service open on Fridays, but stagger the employees’ work schedules so they work only four days, but have different days off. This would also allow the village to stay open later hours, he said. “The problem with a traditional five-day workweek is we find our residents like the ability to be here between 5 and 8 p.m.,” Schofield said. |wellington the magazine| September 2013

Real estate is on the move again in Wellington, and the growing trend can be seen in new home construction. As the housing market continues a slow rebound in other markets, local builders note that Wellington is one of the first South Florida communities to be making a strong comeback. That’s great news, not only for those who wish to buy here, but for the community itself. Wellington is home to some of the region’s most beautiful neighborhoods, and prides itself on retaining a hometown feel. There are also many property types to choose, from single-family, master-planned communities to custom homes and brand-new townhome neighborhoods.

These are all positive signs for equestrian builders, but also for buyer confidence in the Wellington housing market, Wilson said.

Rob Wilson of Ventura Construction, a custom-home builder in Palm Beach County specializing in unique equestrian properties, has seen a definite increase in the Wellington market. “There’s a shift away from basic barns to higher-end projects,” said Wilson, who has been building homes in the Palm Beaches for three decades. “Interior features and square footage are being upgraded and maximized.” As an example, Wilson is seeing more property owners opt for rubber pavers in their barns, as opposed to concrete 20

He’s also seeing barn owners go with tongue-and-groove ceilings as opposed to stucco. “Tongue and groove is three times the price of stucco,” he explained. “They want to get the right feel, a warm feel.”

Equestrians are not looking to just house their horses, they want upgrades, like additional space for bathrooms and laundry rooms, Wilson said. Bill Tavernise of Keyes Realtors had his first foray into the real-estate industry in the late 1980s when he purchased and re-sold a rental property. Microsoft founder Bill Gates, listed by Forbes as No. 2 on its annual list of the world’s richest people, has close ties to Wellington. The family spends time in the community each winter, where daughter Jennifer has ridden at the Winter Equestrian Festival for years. Known to the world as one of the key players behind the computer revolution, in recent years, Gates has put his focus on philanthropy through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. What started 16 years ago as a way for one family to give back to children in poverty has grown into a multi-billiondollar nonprofit with roots all over the world. Key foundation initiatives include eradicating diseases, giving access to clean water and food, sending children to college and giving the world access to the Internet.

In 2006, fellow billionaire Warren Buffett made a $30 billion commitment to the foundation, joining as a trustee. In 2008, Gates stepped down as CEO of Microsoft to work full-time at the foundation.

The idea sparked in 1997 after Bill and Melinda Gates read an article about millions of children who die in poor countries from diseases no longer feared in the United States. They made it their mission to help.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help people lead healthy and productive lives. It has a simple premise: every life has equal value. Based in Seattle, with satellite locations all around the world, it has more than 1,000 employees with $36.4 billion in asset-trust endowment. Since 1997, it has granted more than $26 billion to helping others.

Across the U.S., the foundation has helped those with the fewest resources have access to opportunities to help them succeed. Gates traveled to India and administered oral polio vaccines to children, prompting him to strive for a world without polio. It is a commitment he has continued, pledging more than $200 million and partnering with Rotary International to wipe out the disease. “Polio eradication is a top priority for the foundation, a primary focus for me, and a powerful example of the importance of accurate measurement,” Gates stated in the foundation’s 2013 annual report. “The number of global polio cases has been under 1,000 cases for the last two years, but getting rid of the very last few cases is the hardest part.” |wellington the magazine| September 2013

In 2012, on the cusp of ridding polio from the world, the foundation saw a display of solidarity from the heads of state of Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan — where the disease remains — along with large donors, who vowed to capitalize on recent progress in the fight against the disease. “The global polio community is now finalizing a detailed plan that I believe should allow us to finish the job of polio eradication within the next six years,” Gates noted. It has not just been polio that the foundation has worked to eradicate — the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is dedicated to preventing disease through increased access to vaccines. In 1998, it formed the Bill and Melinda Gates Children’s Vaccine Program with $100 million in seed money. The next year, the foundation joined the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI), which provides

vaccines to children in more than 70 developing countries. In 2011, the foundation and GAVI, with the help of public and private donors, committed funding to immunize more than 250 million of the world’s poorest children against disease by 2015, preventing more than 4 million premature deaths. The foundation has worked to prevent malaria, pledging more than $258 million in grants to develop a malaria vaccine, new drugs and innovative mosquito control. In 2003, it launched a branch in India devoted to the prevention of HIV and AIDS. In 2010, the foundation declared a Decade of Vaccines, pledging $10 billion over 10 years. Bill and Melinda Gates have also supported investing in new technologies and science to find an answer to the world’s problems. In

2006, the foundation launched the Grand Challenges Explorations with $100 million in incentive to encourage world scientists to find new approaches to tackle health challenges. Another large goal has been stamping out hunger and poverty, encouraging families across the world to work toward better health and success. In 2006, the foundation partnered with the Rockefeller Foundation to launch the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), led by Kofi Annan. The program is helping revitalize agriculture in Africa, with a focus on small farmers. Early in the foundation’s history, Bill and Melinda Gates launched the Gates Library Foundation — a $200 million commitment to help all public libraries in the U.S. offer free Internet access, building on Gates’ long-held belief that access to the Internet provides a key link to knowledge and productivity.

International Equestrians Jump For JustWorld

The blue-and-purple coats of JustWorld International have become a staple at horse shows across the world, with junior to Grand Prix riders donning the jovial colors. JustWorld International has become more than a name and a vision in the equestrian world. It has become a reason to not only ride, but to jump for a just world. Wellington resident Jessica Newman, an avid equestrian and former competitor, created a link between the equestrian world and JustWorldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s humanitarian efforts by providing opportunities for equestrians to help those less fortunate. Now celebrating its 10-year anniversary, JustWorld has expanded beyond expectations with resounding support overseas. The popular not-for-profit organization has worked diligently around the globe to improve the lives of impoverished children by providing nutrition, health,

hygiene, education and cultural development. Its helping hands have touched the lives of so many others that it should come as no surprise that it has partnered with more than 30 different horse shows across the nation and world. The faces of JustWorld Ambassadors can be seen during the 12-week Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, as well as at many other shows across North America, including the Hampton Classic, Thunderbird Show Park, the American Gold Cup and

Lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;International Bromont Horse Show. JustWorld has also aligned itself with Jumping Chantilly, Pole International Deauville, Bourg-en-Bresse Jumping International and many more. On top of celebrating a phenomenal 10 years of helping impoverished children, JustWorld can also celebrate its newest charity partnership with the Swiss National Equestrian Federation and the Longines CSIO St. Gallen of Switzerland. developing countries through its network of JustWorld Ambassadors, who pledge a portion of their annual winnings (or make a donation) to the organization. The organization’s annual gala in mid-January raised more than $420,000, and in 10 years, Newman and the JustWorld Ambassadors have raised more than $6 million that have been used for sustainable outreach projects in Guatemala, Honduras and Cambodia.

Newman grew up with the support of her family allowing her the opportunity to pursue show jumping on a full-time basis. Her accolades include riding for the United States Equestrian Team in Nations Cup competition and the Developing Riders Tour, as well as taking top placings in World Cupqualifying Grand Prix classes throughout North America. She was living the dream.

Then at age 22, Newman had an epiphany. The turning point occurred when Newman was studying international development at the American University of Paris, an exclusive school with approximately 1,000 students from 150 different countries. This opportunity widened her horizons and changed her perspective as she became aware of how much poverty existed around her. Her eyes were opened wide when she realized the number of people who don’t have a sliver of the opportunities she enjoyed. That is when Newman put the tack away and walked away from her life of privilege. She jumped at the opportunity to work with the Trickle Up organization in 1998, shortly after Hurricane Mitch devastated much of Honduras. That fateful trip was only the beginning for Newman, and the conception of JustWorld International.

Newman shifted her equestrianoriented goals into a way to help others. She used her time to research partner organizations in nations such as Cambodia, Honduras, Guatemala and Brazil — countries that all suffer from extensive poverty. She wanted to see a local change for the children, focusing on their happiness, health and education. “People thought I was insane when I first began JustWorld,” Newman laughed. “They wondered if it was just a phase. They thought I was too idealistic, and the question remained if horse people would identify with the organization and even participate. I felt very strongly that they needed the opportunity.” The doubters fueled Newman’s passion. “The idea of JustWorld needed to be shaped,” she said. “In a way, it was because of people telling me I was

crazy, and that it wasn’t going to work, that I pushed forward and structured JustWorld so that it fits perfectly with the equestrian lifestyle. Chiropractor Dr. Randall Laurich, owner of the Wellness Experience in Wellington, enjoys being part of the community, helping those who live here year-round, as well as equestrians and water skiers who come to him with their special needs. “I’ve been in the area almost eight years now,” he said. “I really enjoy helping other people in the community build their businesses. Even though we’re the Wellness Experience and I’m a chiropractor, I have networking groups that I’m a part of.” An active member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Laurich heads the chamber’s Medical & Wellness Committee. “Helping other medical professionals grow their businesses, helping others in the community grow, that’s something I’m fond of because I think that if they can become a success in this

community, they will not only continue to grow, it will also get the message out about why I’m doing what I’m doing,” he said. Laurich has his own networking group that meets at 8:30 a.m. Thursdays at Taylor Made Café in Wellington. “I love to see other people prosper, and I think that goes hand-in-hand with why I’m a chiropractor,” he said. “I like to see people healthy, and I like to see them get better than they already are.” He believes physical and financial health are mutually beneficial. “We want to see our economy healthy, and we also want to see individuals in our community stay healthy,” Laurich said. A fan of water skiing, Laurich treats many of the sport’s elite athletes. “I’m familiar with the equestrian group, but there’s also that group of water skiers who have different injuries. Growing up as a kid, I started water skiing myself at about 14 years old,” he said. “I understand the complexities of it, and also understand the injury components.” He likes taking care of such athletes because they want to get better than they already are, and Laurich believes that he can get them to another level if they have an underlying situation or healthcare concern. Perhaps it doesn’t bother them all the time, but might hinder them enough that they don’t get around that last buoy. “From a chiropractic perspective, looking at the water skier, if they’re a slalom skier, they come out of the

water with one foot forward, so that torques the spine and it sets the body off a little bit, which throws the rest of the spine off. And then you put 500 horsepower in front of it, and what do you get? More torqueing,” Laurich said. Aside from athletes, many people, from students to office workers, can suffer injuries from everyday tasks. Laurich received his degree in 1998 from the Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, S.C. and moved to Coral Springs, where he did an externship. “I started my own practice in Boca Raton in 2001, and in 2006, I opened the Wellness Experience in Wellington,” he said. Laurich sold his Boca Raton practice in 2008 to commit more time to Wellington. “I realized what a great community this was, and I wanted to entrench myself and be a part of something special here,” he said. Laurich and his wife, Lorraine, have two children, Hudson, 6, and Sophia, 8. The family has lived in Wellington since 2003. Laurich’s staff also includes Dr. Andrew Biggs, another chiropractor; acupuncture specialist Meredith Vorrath; nutritionist Tracy Mastandrea; and massage therapists Marcos Gignea and Ortavia Taylor. “Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.” That is truly the credo of Leslie Pfeiffer, who has always believed she could do more. The current president of the Wellington Art Society, Pfeiffer has been involved in helping others since learning the value of volunteerism as a child at her mother’s side. Time has passed, but the desire to make people’s lives better has not. Pfeiffer, the September nominee for Wellington The Magazine’s Volunteer of the Year Award, got her first taste of volunteering growing up on Chicago’s South Side. “I worked with my mom on many community projects at our local church, school, hospital and nursing home,” she recalled. “She taught me to appreciate and share my talents and use my time wisely. Volunteering for me is about connecting with community.” The older she has gotten, the more Pfeiffer has given of her time to others. “During high school and college, I continued to volunteer and tutored children and adults in language and art programs,” Pfeiffer said. “I received my bachelor’s degree in education and art from Northern Illinois University and taught students in grades four to eight in the Chicago area. I have always been passionate about art and the creative process and made it part of my students’ lessons.” After she married her husband, Randy, in 1976, they moved to Boca Raton. A

few years later, they opened their own financial services office. As the 1990s dawned, Pfeiffer kicked her volunteerism up a notch. “In 1991, Randy was invited to join Rotary International, a worldwide humanitarian service organization, and we began to help with local community service projects and fundraising for local and global programs,” Pfeiffer said. “Rotary’s motto, ‘Service Above Self,’ became part of our lifestyle. I learned to organize fundraising events, set up raffles and auctions, and did hands-on projects such as distributing school supplies, heading up children’s holiday parties, delivering Thanksgiving food boxes, visiting nursing homes, holding car shows and pancake breakfasts, to name a few. Over the years, I have seen a bright future through the eyes of hundreds of students who received our local Rotary scholarships, the near-complete elimination of polio worldwide and hundreds of sponsored projects that have brought relief and hope to people everywhere. My community had grown to include people all over the world.” The Pfeiffers became Wellington residents in the mid-1990s and, to the surprise of no one, continued to

volunteer. They became part of the Wellington Rotary Club and another local organization, My Brother’s/ Sister’s Keeper Charitable Trust, which has provided them with another opportunity to help local families going through difficult times. Moving to Wellington also allowed Pfeiffer’s artistic side to flourish. “In 2006, we spread our creative wings and started a film production company with two other partners,” she said. “To date, our company, Cinema Island Productions, has produced a full-length feature film and is at work on several more projects.” Her desire to express herself artistically is paramount to Pfeiffer. “When your creative spirit is fully engaged, you are constantly energized, and that pours forth into all you do,” she said. “You then begin to live a creative life, and the possibilities are endless.” That mindset led directly to her involvement in the Wellington Art Society. “About eight years ago, while taking a painting class locally, I learned of

wellington volunteer the Wellington Art Society,” Pfeiffer said. “I attended their meetings and enjoyed being with people who shared my passion for art. Wanting to help local artists thrive and develop visual arts programs that inspire and educate the community, I joined the board and served as development chairwoman. I became president in 2013.” Her position in the organization gives Pfeiffer the chance to use her two loves — volunteering and artistic expression — to garner the maximum effect. “Volunteering with the Wellington Art Society allows me to use my time and talents to enhance and enrich our local lifestyle through visual art programs,” she said. “People want to live in communities where the arts are part of daily life, and I love to encourage them to be creative and use their imaginations and skills to find their own original form of self-expression.”

Pfeiffer believes the group’s opendoor policy goes a long way toward connecting Wellington residents with their inner artists. “Our meetings are fun and interesting, open to the public, and filled with enthusiasm and encouragement,” she said. “We show our members’ recent work and learn about their creative process, followed by a professional artist demo or presentation. Our members are committed to helping each other and sharing the joy of creativity.” The Wellington Art Society provides artists with more than a platform to show their work. It offers opportunities to learn more about artist development and business practices, and how to serve the community through art. “Our members are committed to sharing their talents through our

art outreach projects and activities,” Pfeiffer said. “Our projects include teaching art at the Wellington Boys & Girls Club, creating paintings for the young patients at the pediatric unit at Palms West Hospital, providing marine-themed artwork for the Tiger Shark Cove Park playground’s recent rebuild, plus exhibitions and awards of excellence for K-12 children’s art, participating in Wellington’s Art in Public Places and awarding scholarships to students pursuing artrelated careers.” Pfeiffer works closely with Wellington business leaders to continue the success of the Wellington Art Society. “Our programs and events are made possible through our member support and the generosity of our local partners and sponsors,” she said. “As president and development chairwoman, I enjoy working with

The restaurant was created by prominent restaurateur Lirim Jacobi as a new spin on great Italian flavors. Mara Cucina is conveniently located across from the mall’s food court.

The menu features some classic dishes everyone will recognize, but Mara Cucina also has several dishes that elevate classic Italian flavors to new heights.

“It’s classic Italian food, but we’re trying to bring it to another level,” Chef Josue Flores said. “It’s more like fine dining.” The restaurant itself is upscale and modern, with stunning glass-tile walls offset by bright red and crisp white accent walls. Overhead are modern pendant lights, casting light over granite tabletops. Guests can choose to sit at a booth, table, high-top table or the large bar. No matter where you sit, the energy in the space is evident. In addition to its great food, Mara Cucina offers a fully stocked bar with delicious signature cocktails, and there is happy hour all day. But it’s the food that sets Mara Cucina apart from other restaurants. “We use the highest quality produce in our food, which

“We have a very classic menu with chicken Parmigiana, chicken Marsala and chicken Francese,” Flores said. “But we just added new items to the menu, bringing in more upscale dishes. People who want to try something different will find something on our new menu.” He described it as a fresh, new perspective on classic Italian food. Try the Chilean Sea Bass Oreganata ($28), a delicious piece of perfectly seared fish served over Brussels sprouts and pancetta. The fish is delicious and flavorful, and the pairing of the sprouts and pancetta make for a tasty combination. For a more classic meal, choose the Veal Chop ($28), a large chop of veal served on the bone with mashed potatoes and covered in a porcini sauce. The chop is tender and falls off the bone. The sauce makes for a flavorful addition that makes this a new favorite take on the classic dish.

The Chicken Gorgonzola ($13) is the perfect blend of Italian flavors in a creative new dish. A breaded chicken breast is baked with Gorgonzola cheese and topped with homemade bruschetta and a balsamic reduction. The cheese sets off the tangy vinegar for a blend of flavors that will make taste buds sing. “Some of the flavors are totally different than what people eat around here,” Flores said. “We don’t just cook. We put our hearts in it. I cook personally for people. And I can make dishes special for customers who want to customize their orders.” Mara Cucina prides itself on offering great food at reasonable prices, with dishes ranging from subs and grinders ($7 - $8) and pasta dishes ($8.25 - $15) to pizza ($10.75 - $15.75) and more. Some of the more popular dishes, Flores said, include the homemade meatballs ($5), the Risotto Fruitti di Marre ($25) and the Pasta Carbonara ($15). Flores said his tomato sauce is a must-try for Italian food aficionados. 72
