The President’s Viewpoint by Norman Tomaka FPA PRESIDENT
Member Retention is Key to Association's Future
A
sking whether membership retention or membership recruitment is more important to the FPA is like asking whether breathing or blood flow is more important to sustaining a person’s life. You won’t live long without both being healthy and in good order. That said, member retention is probably the most important goal if we are to remain fiscally sound and professionally effective in the future health care economy. Existing association members are professionally profitable! WE are the best advertisement for the continued viability of the FPA. But are we, the members, promoting FPA and the resulting positive professional development? I offer as proof of the value of membership the exciting and success-filled careers of our many high-profile colleagues. Are we highlighting our personal professional success as proof for membership? Don’t we owe our colleagues the impressive example of our FPA professional network? Our belief is solid that each member is a better pharmacy practitioner because of tangible professional development provided by the Florida Pharmacy Association. Each member owes it to their investment in the association to offer the profitable value of professional networking and advocacy as a benefit to all current and future members. In order to remain fresh and viable, our Association must continue to identify membership retention as THE major priority. While we can not afford to spend a disproportionate amount of time and resources on recruitment, current members must advocate for retention as a means to protect their investment in their profession and promote
new membership. All of us have entered the Association for various reasons. While continuing education credits used to be the major reason to join, today, we would have difficulty sustaining membership for that reason alone. Current and future members most likely look to the FPA for professional advancement including education, legislative initiatives and networking.
Our belief is solid that each member is a better pharmacy practitioner because of tangible professional development provided by the Florida Pharmacy Association. Leadership often acclaims that our associate retention program must include each member’s energized commitment to legislative activity that is centered on advancing the profession of pharmacy. In order to meet the expectations of our growing health care economy, Florida’s pharmacist must be provided with opportunities for dynamic, cutting-edge professional development. One opportunity that this Association provides to membership most effective-

ly is legislative advocacy. With recent advancements in pharmacist-provided immunization and pharmacy technician registration, FPA members should be proclaiming collective victory as a proponent for increasing membership numbers! Professional advocacy for Pharmacy in Florida will continue to start with FPA membership. As changes continue in the patient’s expectations of pharmacy, so must the professional advocacy we embrace. As you read this, think of those pharmacists and technicians you work with. Are all of these important associates members? Have you offered the privilege of FPA membership to those you depend on most in the practice environment? Is each prospective member made aware of the benefits our association offers? Starting today, offer the privilege of membership to each colleague. Speak about the benefits FPA has indirectly and directly brought to your profesSEPTEMBER 2008

Executive Insight by michael jackson, RPhPresident and CEO By Michael Jackson, FPA Executive Vice
Presidential Election 2008: Your Decision that Last Four Years
T
his fall, America, and in particular Florida, will be examining political candidates who will have an interest in soliciting your support for their candidacy. Florida is projected to be a key state in the outcome of the election. Already, there have been a number of primary races that the Association has been actively engaged in. The Florida Pharmacy Political Action Committee of Continuous Existence (FPPACCE) has helped to support several election initiatives with the purpose of gaining friends in the Florida Legislature. Such tactics have been quite beneficial in our efforts to advance bills favorable to pharmacy as well as prevent poor legislation from being written into law. Members of the PACCE Board of Directors include Joy Marcus as its chair, Josh Fields, its treasurer, and members Alexander Pytlarz, Mark Hobbs, Nick Generalovich, Theresa Tolle, Tom Cuomo and Valerie Ingoldsby. Decisions and laws are made as to how you will practice your profession of pharmacy, care for your patients, as well as how health care costs affect state budgets. Your vote and contributions have a direct impact on these elected officials who represent you and make decisions affecting the future of your profession. If you wish to make or add to your contribution, you may do so through our Web site. The Florida Pharmacy Political Action Committee of Continuous Existence (FP-PACCE) is a means for us all to “pool” our resources and have a greater reach to candidates who have or will have an understanding of what’s best for the practice of pharmacy and each aspect of patient care.
As for the 2008 presidential race, it is no secret that this year’s election will have a historic outcome. For the first time, we will see within the two major parties an African American presidential candidate and a female candidate for vice president. Regardless of these significant events, it is very important for members to look primarily at the issues and to make a decision to support the ticket that appears to be favorable to quality patient care, the profession and the business of pharmacy. It is not easy to drill into the political rhetoric to find information necessary to make an intelligent decision. After all, the office of president has the ability to do a finite number of things. Perhaps history may help as each of us search for the answers to make an informed decision. Consider that over the past several years, Congress along with the current administration, has brought to the profession of pharmacy the Medicare Part D program with a prescription benefit plan as well as a medication therapy management program. While there are some issues with these programs, they still represent a fundamental shift in health care services by pharmacists. We also have seen a significant amount of the pharmacy business channeled through third-party programs with the federal government now serving as the primary payer of pharmacy health care services. Members can visit a special section of our Web site that will help you acquire information on the candidates. You also can use this Web site to facilitate a voter registration campaign in your community as well as follow the Florida statewide ballot initiatives and
Michael Jackson
local races. For more information, go to http://pharmview.capwiz.com/election/guide/fl. Regardless of what your political affiliation may be, it is essential that each of us be active participants in the election process this year. Selecting candidates to represent the people is one of the fundamental principles that this nation was founded upon. We should all be active participants and cast our votes to support a candidate of our choice. We all are patriots and citizens and should embrace the freedom to choose who represents us in Washington and in Tallahassee. Failure to do so empowers other interest groups to shape our professional future.

The Foundation Steps Out of the Box and Unlocks the Power by PATSEY J. POWERS FOUNDATION EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
With the convention behind us, looking back, we really stepped out of the box and unlocked the power. Thanks to all of you who purchased Endowment tickets, Wii and TV tickets plus tickets for prizes at the Ice Cream Social. The Endowment Fund, which is designated for future scholarships, has a goal PATSEY J. POWERS of $300,000. At this time, we are a third of the way meeting this goal with $91,600 invested in certificates of deposit. The whole idea is to sponsor as many scholarships as possible with the interest accrued. So, with a view of the past and a vision for the future, the Foundation will succeed. Are you ready to feel connected? Not by DNA or heredity, but by BRICKS. Yes, by bricks. The Foundation is considering a new fundraising project: laying bricks for a new sidewalk leading up to the front entrance of the Florida Pharmacy Association (FPA). With this project you will have an opportunity to become connected with your profession by having your name or whomever you wish placed in perpetuity in the sidewalk in front of the FPA. The FPA and the Foundation are working together on this idea. The sidewalk needed to be rebuilt and replaced, as storm water runs down the street sidewalk and right into the F PA’s sidewa l k and entranceway to the front door. This brings debris, mud and erodes the dirt from the front lawn, which causes flooding and more mud. Rod Presnell, former FPA executive Rod Presnell and James Kaufman measuring the FPA sidewalk. vice president and 18

others-who want to donate their time and expertise to augment public health activities throughout the year and to prepare for and respond to emergencies. MRC volunteers become part of a system to supplement existing local emergency and public health resources.
H MRC volunteers include health care professionals such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, veterinarians, and
epidemiologists. Other community members such as interpreters, chaplains, office workers, and legal advisors can fill other vital support positions.
