Collaboration is Key to Success of Legislative Efforts

ear FPA family, let me tell you what’s been going on. We just returned from our first council meetings a week or so ago, and although we faced the threat of Hurricane Isaac, the Chairs and members of the Councils were in full force to do your work. As for the students, they were overflowing. What an incredible team. I applaud and thank each of them for their commitment. During the meetings, I made it a point to visit each and every Council and share in their discussions. Let me tell you that they were focused and energized. I was pleased with what I was hearing at the workshops and with the quality of the group participants and the dialogue. It confirmed what I already knew, that I had made the right choice of Council Chairs and members. You have an extraordinary team working to protect, defend and promote the profession of Pharmacy, and to add value to you, our members. During convention, I had asked that each of the Councils start to work early and that they meet frequently between faceto-face meetings. My wish was that the Councils would have action items for the Board of Directors to debate and act upon. I am happy to report that this is already occurring. In my inaugural address, I mentioned that I felt we should be united, that we are all pharmacists, one profession of pharmacy and that we should speak as one. In fact, I mentioned that this was a call for unity. During convention, I had the pleasure of meeting FSHP in-coming president Connie Hogrefe, and at that time mentioned to her my desire that our organizations work together to achieve what is best for pharmacy. At the FPA Board of Direc-

tors meeting, Connie and I again discussed this issue and mutually agreed to continue the dialogue. Last week, leadership from the FPA Governmental Affairs Council, led by Chair Humberto Martinez, and FSHP Legislative Affairs Council, led by Chair Paul Eger, met with Executive VPs, Michael Jackson and Michael Mc-

You have an extraordinary team working to protect, defend and promote the profession of Pharmacy, and to add value to you, our members. Quone, and with president Hogrefe and myself to begin discussions on developing joint legislative agendas. The purpose was to explore how we might help support each of the organizations in achieving what is best for pharmacy. We have committed to continuing these discussions regularly with the goal of identifying and supporting mutual agendas and to develop mutual talking points to be shared with legislators. I was very pleased with the dialogue and look very forward to our next meetings.

Goar Alvarez, 2012-2013 FPA President

I know that all of us as pharmacists truly have the same goals, and through frequent and honest discussions we can understand better where our differences might lie, and much more importantly, where our similarities exist. I’ll tell you that what I heard is that the similarities far outweigh any perceived differences. After all, we are all pharmacists. I believe that with our “collective voice” representing a large constituency of pharmacists throughout the state, we can make our case better heard by legislators. Over the next few months, I will be having the Chairs of each of the Councils share with you their work on your behalf so that you may have a clearer understanding of the issues, some of the challenges we face and the successes we achieve. Members, I invite you to contact the office with your questions, concerns and solutions. I look forward to hearing from you. Do you know someone who is not a member? Please encourage them to join us and SEPTEMBER 2012

Recognizing Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians in October

here are days on the calendar that we look forward to celebrating. These days include birthdays, anniversaries, graduation dates and even the date when we were first issued our professional licenses to practice pharmacy. I remember when I received notice from the Florida and Alabama Boards of Pharmacy on my examination results. We were told that if the envelope was thin that was a good sign. If the envelope was thick (usually containing instructions for when the next exam would be administered), that would be a day of disappointment. Thank goodness that the mailman’s delivery load over 30 years ago was light and two Southern states bestowed upon me the privilege to provide pharmacist services to their citizens. Of course, we all know that over the years our profession has had to endure its share of challenges with professional and business obstacles lurking around every corner. Still, we should see these challenges not as dark clouds on the horizon, but as windows of opportunity to provide solutions to society’s issues with medication mismanagement. Who better than a pharmacist, who is trained and qualified to correct medication therapy problems? We are constantly working to get that message to the public. The FPA had an opportunity to appear on public radio in the Tallahassee market to share our thoughts on the pill mill issue. You can listen to that broadcast through this link: http:// news.wfsu.org/post/it-s-about-floridapill-mills Next month has been designated American Pharmacist Month. We should use this national campaign to

tell our story. With so much communication technology out there, the outreach is as easy as grabbing our smart phones and posting information on our Facebook pages or Twitter accounts. Our patients are our best advo-

They can tell a much more compelling story on the value of pharmacy services than any public relations firm ever could put together. Here are some things you may want to do in preparation for next month’s celebration of our profession. ■■ Visit your town’s mayor and ask that he support a declaration of October as American Pharmacists Month. ■■ Prepare an editorial article on the value of services provided by your pharmacy and send it to your local community’s news media. ■■ Create and distribute bag stuffers or fliers for your clients who visit your pharmacy. ■■ Invite your state representative or senator to visit your pharmacy and describe what you do and how it benefits society. ■■ Share with the FPA what you have done so that we can showcase your

efforts to the membership. National Pharmacy Technician Day is October 23, 2012. Work with your pharmacy technicians and make them part of this massive public relations campaign. Consider taking them to lunch on that day. Make a phone call or send a press release to the local television news station. Don’t be surprised that they may come to your pharmacy to chat. Make sure that if they film your pharmacy that you are seen talking to patients and not just counting by five.

We all know that the profession of pharmacy has been the submarine service of health care, and that everything we do has been in the background. Well, in October we are recommending that we all come to the surface and share our value with those who benefit from what we do. n SEPTEMBER 2012 |

What do you value most about your FPA membership?

I value the continuing education, which is most important to me, as I’m able to keep current with things I don’t really do there (at home).

What are some thoughts you have on pharmacy as a profession right now?

You see a change, a rapid change in pharmacy, because you’re more into the teaching aspect of it to your patients. It’s moving away from the traditional free, independent pharmacy, and you’re more involved with the whole health team.

Is there any particular change you’d like to see that would make you be more effective with your patients? Yes, we just need more dialogue with the physicians, and patients, and also with their caregivers, so that’ll be excellent.

What are you most excited about the future of pharmacy?

If you just look at the future of pharmacy from the outside looking in, it may seem as if it’s going nowhere. But it is going, because you will always need that personal touch with the patient, and they are living longer now, so you need to be more informed, with teaching and leading.

What do you wish everybody knew about pharmacy?

Well, I think we need to be a bit more out front with pharmacy. Get involved in our communities, let them know what we do, and what we stand for. And not to downgrade any profession, because all of them are needed, the whole healthcare team.

What got you interested in pharmacy in the first place?

Oh, it was amazing. I was married to a pharmacist, and I wanted to be a part of a business that he was creating, although my first love was nursing, I used every bit of that nursing career, which was a plus in our business, and I thank God I was afforded the opportunity to learn the pharmacy part of it.

What do you think your patients would say about you and your practice?

Well, they would say she is somebody who’s caring; if I need something she goes to the limit until she gets it, and she teaches us about side effects of our medication, and she is very involved in our treatment.
