716 N. Main Street Gainesville, FL 32601 (352) 377-0777 FloridasEden.org Florida’s Eden 10 Help celebrate Florida’s Eden, 10 years towards promoting a vibrant creative economy and fostering conservation-first strategies to protect the assets of our natural environment. Put yourself on the Florida’s Eden memory wall, step into our oral history booth, and take part in a month of special programs at The Doris. Travels on the Blue Path covers an entire wall at The Doris. Immerse yourself in the story of Florida’s most essential natural resource: water. This interactive display shows the results of human activities on Florida’s springs and aquifer, challenges our assumptions about water quantity and quality, and invites us to envision a future where Floridians find new ways to value water and place it at the center of a prosperous future.

The Hipp’s production uses modern technology (cell phones, social networking) to bring the story to life for a new generation. It is an unforgettable adventure of royal weddings, star-crossed lovers, mistaken identity, magical potions and of course, lots of mischief and merriment. Men in tights are replaced by a cityscape of hipsters and modern communications; cell phones and social networking give the comedy new life. In the manner of recent Hippodrome hits, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is played by actors taking on multiple roles. Enjoy a drink at the downstairs bar before the show, check out the artwork in the Hipp Gallery and go online to see the current lineup of films at the Hipp Cinema.

DAY TRIPS

Four day trips 30 to 45 minutes from Gainesville:

Hawthorne + the Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail

Picnic at Dudley Farm State Park, where heritage crops are still grown and sugar cane is still ground at the best-documented pioneer farm in America. Then hop into Newberry, where you can visit the Fire House Gallery & Studio and enjoy down-home barbecue.

Experience one of North America’s richest eagle nesting areas along the route of Florida’s first crossstate railway as you hike, bike, or ride from Gainesville. Relax into Hawthorne’s small-town vibe and on Saturdays be sure to see the Hawthorne Historical Museum and Cultural Center.

Alachua + San Felasco Hammock

Micanopy, Evinston, Cross Creek + Paynes Prairie

High Springs, O’Leno + Santa Fe River Springs

Shop for antiques in Florida’s oldest inland city (Micanopy), visit Florida’s oldest post office (Evinston) and the home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (Cross Creek), then hike Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park with its bounty of birds and wildlife. April 7: Micanopy Historical Museum hosts a re-enactment, “The Second Seminole War: living history in Micanopy.”

Photos by Sean Dowie: Micanopy Historical Museum, above; and left to right, home Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, musicians at Dudley Farm, Devil’s Millhopper, Cafe in Alachua, birdwatching, Hawthorne mural.

Dudley Farm State Historical Park

Enjoy the shops, eateries and well-preserved old homes on Alachua’s Main Street. Revel in San Felasco Hammock State Park’s shaded trails, bird life, and opportunities for equestrians and off-road cyclists–on separate trails, of course! Your gateway to the freshwater springs of the Santa Fe River, High Springs boasts quaint downtown shops, eateries and galleries. This is springs and cave-diving country, but even the less adventurous can rent a kayak or canoe to explore the Santa Fe River and its many springs. Marvel as the river disappears underground at O’Leno State Park and returns to the surface again at River Rise.
