eu sonho é morar lá.” Tenho sido incentivada por esse comentário há exatos dois meses, desde que anunciei minha mudança de São Paulo para Florianópolis. Ele vem de amigos, familiares, desconhecidos. Todos acreditam que a Ilha da Magia enfeitiça quem nela aporta. Uma vez em Floripa, fica difícil imaginar a felicidade em outro lugar. Foi assim com os índios tupis-guaranis, que amavam a sua terra. Foi assim também com os açorianos, que chegaram à ilha no século 18 para nunca mais sair. E assim ainda é com os mais de 10 mil brasileiros e estrangeiros que se mudam para a capital de Santa Catarina todos os anos. Nós, forasteiros, compomos mais de um terço da sua população. Logo poderei me apresentar como uma “manezinha por adesão”. O termo “manezinho”, usado para definir os nativos, vem dos Manuéis provenientes dos Açores. De lá, os florianopolitanos herdaram também a renda de bilro, tecida com linha fina e usada para fazer toalhas e roupas. Na Avenida das Rendeiras, a Dona Delorme, assim como suas irmãs Dona Zulma e Dona Sílvia, continua firme e forte nessa arte centenária. A marca açoriana está no bairro de Ribeirão da Ilha, no centro-sul de Floripa, e, no noroeste, em Sambaqui e Santo Antônio de Lisboa – onde fica o Engenho dos Andrade, patrimônio tombado pela prefeitura. Antepassados do escultor manezinho Claudio Andrade moeram mandioca ali por muitos anos. Hoje, cabe a ele receber hordas de estudantes que vêm ver como os cerca de 300 engenhos da colônia funcionavam.
“It’s my dream to live there.” I’ve been being encouraged by this remark for exactly two months, ever since I first announced that I’m moving from São Paulo to Florianópolis. It comes from friends, family members, strangers. Everyone believes that the Island of Magic enchants whoever sets foot there. Once you’ve been to Floripa, it’s hard to imagine happiness anywhere else. It was like this for the Tupi-Guarani Indians, who loved their land. And it was the same story with the Azoreans, who came to the island in the 18th century and never left. And this is how it is for the more than 10,000 Brazilians and foreigners who move to the capital of Santa Catarina every year. We outsiders comprise over a third of the population. Soon I’ll be able to introduce myself as a “manezinha by association.” The term “manezinho,” used to refer to natives of Florianópolis, is derived from the many Manuels who came from the Azores. Also from the Azores is bobbin lace, which is made with a fine fabric and used in towels and clothing. On Avenida das Rendeiras, Dona Delorme, just like her sisters Dona Zulma and Dona Sílvia, is still going strong in this century-old craft. There are traces of the Azores in the neighborhood of Ribeirão da Ilha, in central south Floripa, and, in the northwest, Sambaqui and Santo Antônio de Lisboa – home to the Engenho dos Andrade, which was spot listed by city hall. The ancestors of local sculptor Claudio Andrade worked there grinding manioc for years. These days, it welcomes hoards of students who go there to see how the colony’s nearly 300 mills used to work.

Lesson in ceramics Neighboring the Engenho dos Andrade, a small pottery factory catches the eye. What kind of people sculpt ceramic pots at 4 p.m. in the 95 °F [35 °C] heat? Marilena Kaily claims her great-grandfather first brought the Greeks to Santa Catarina around 1900. Beside her is Jandira Lorenz, an internationally recognized visual artist. The daughter of a Polish couple – her maiden name is the unpronounceable Bieszczad – born in Dom Feliciano, Rio Grande do Sul, Lorenz moved to the then unknown city of Florianópolis almost 40 years ago. 69

Elas estão, na verdade, em uma aula. O professor, Gilberto João Machado, representa a nona geração de uma família açoriana que colonizou a cidade de São José, vizinha de Floripa no continente. Gilberto aprendeu a moldar louças com 12 anos de idade, e agora, aposentado, resgata a tradição. Já a proprietária da olaria, Evely Emma Muschellack,é neta de berlinenses e veio de Porto União, no interior do estado, para colocar em prática a sua aspiração. Como muitos – eu inclusive –, ela canalizou o seu desejo para a Ilha da Magia.
They’re actually in the middle of a class. The teacher, Gilberto João Machado, represents the ninth generation of an Azorean family that colonized the city of São José, Floripa’s neighbor on the continent. Machado learned to mold dishware at age 12, and now, retired, he’s resurrecting the tradition. Meanwhile, the owner of the factory, Evely Emma Muschellack, whose grandparents were from Berlin, came from Porto União, in the countryside of the state, to put her aspirations into practice. Like many people – myself included –, she channeled her dreams to the Island of Magic.
Sul selvagem “As pessoas vêm para cá realizar seus sonhos”, concorda a turismóloga Fernanda Carasilo. Moradora da Lagoa da Conceição há três anos, desde que chegou do Gabão com o marido (que é francês) e os filhos, essa paulistana tem hoje sotaque indecifrável e uma paixão ardente pelo sul da ilha de Florianópolis, considerado a sua região mais selvagem. Ela promove o turismo ecológico em parceria com a comunidade. No sul, as trilhas ao redor da Lagoa do Peri, tombada como patrimônio natural, são um de seus pontos preferidos. Por aquelas bandas, Fernanda já guiou turista finlandês, sueco, francês, inglês... Outros destinos interessantes por ali são as lindas praias de Armação e Matadeiro, cenário das antigas caças às baleias. Ela recomenda um pulo ao Pântano do Sul, na pontinha da ilha, onde está o Bar do Vadinho. E jura: “Não há nada como saborear a tainha recém-pescada divertindo-se com causos que só os pescadores sabem contar”.
The untamed south Tourism expert Fernanda Carasilo agrees, “People come here to live out their dreams.” A resident of Lagoa da Conceição for three years, ever since she arrived from Gabon with her French husband and their children, this São Paulo native now has an indecipherable accent and a strong passion for the southern part of the island, considered Florianópolis’ wildest region. She promotes ecological tourism in partnership with the local community. In the south, the trails around Peri Lagoon, protected as a natural heritage site, are one of her favorite locales. In these parts, Carasilo has guided tourists from Finland, Sweden, France, England… Other interesting destinations in that region include the beautiful beaches of Armação and Matadeiro, a locale for whaling in the past. She recommends a visit to Pântano do Sul, at the tip of the island, where you can find Bar do Vadinho. And she swears: “There’s nothing like savoring some freshly caught mullet while listening to the tales that only fishermen know how to tell.”

Gastronomy in Florianópolis Fish like mullet, flounder and anchovy, not to mention the famous oysters that are raised in the calm waters of the bay of Florianópolis, are plentiful in the city’s restaurants. The Sol Poente Culinary Circuit, which includes various establishments in Santo Antônio de Lisboa and Sambaqui, features cuisine that flirts with its Portuguese roots. At the traditional Restaurante do Gugu, the crab dumpling is a local star – simply delicious. If you want to take a break from the “shrimp festivals” – tasty portions of the crustacean prepared in various styles – of the touristy seaside locales, Floripa also has some more upscale establishments, like the Mediterranean Villa Maggioni in Canto da Lagoa, with its famous duck ravioli with mushrooms. And, closer to the center of La-

A 30 quilômetros dali, é o Simple on the Beach que conquista os badaladores. Em estilo beach club, suas mesas ao ar livre convidam a iguarias como o atum com crosta de gergelim e o carpaccio de polvo assinados pelo chef Rafael Campagnolo, manezinho que voltou do exterior com ideias novas para a sua terra-natal – ou, na verdade, para uma terra nova criada em seu antigo lar: Jurerê Internacional.
goa, the friendly Gergelim offers ideal options for anyone returning from the beach, including stroganoff and Thai fish recipes, as well as another singular attraction: fun American chef Lloyd Martin, from Missouri, who came to the city 11 years ago. Some 18 miles [30 km] away, Simple on the Beach is popular among partygoers. Set up like a beach club, its outdoor tables invite customers to try such dishes as the sesame-encrusted tuna and octopus carpaccio created by chef Rafael Campagnolo, a “manezinho” who returned home from abroad with new ideas for his native land – or, actually, for a new land created in his former hometown: Jurerê Internacional.
Outro lado da ilha Esqueça por um momento o sul natural. Olhe para o norte: lá está Jurerê Internacional, praia-fetiche que habita o imaginário de turistas como um paraíso de ruas limpas, belos corpos e festas inesquecíveis. Bairro de 500 hectares planejado há 25 anos por uma empreiteira gaúcha, Jurerê é um condomínio sem muros à beira de 2 quilômetros de praia, com segurança reforçada – estão sendo instaladas 70 câmeras de vigilância – e casas dignas de Beverly Hills. O astro do futebol Neymar passou ali seu último réveillon. Paul McCartney sobrevoou o local de helicóptero. Lançada com o slogan “Prepare o seu passaporte, Jurerê está chegando”, esse território de fantasia que lembra as zonas nobres de Miami atrai não só turistas, mas moradores em busca de qualidade de vida. É o caso do brasiliense Evandro Ferreira e da mineira Henriqueta Cáceres. Empenhados na busca do melhor lugar para se viver, o casal passou por Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Brasília e Porto Alegre e, enfim, descobriu ali o seu habitat perfeito. “Gosto de usufruir da estrutura do bairro. Jurerê convida a gente a sair de casa”, diz Henriqueta, mostrando as calçadas largas, as pracinhas e as 19 passarelas que ligam o romântico Passeio dos Namorados à praia. “Estamos perto da natureza, e temos tudo de que precisamos aqui”, completa Evandro. A russa Tatiana Orlova também caiu de amores pelo bairro e, há um ano, abriu ali uma filial de sua mimosa loja Boneca Russa, especializada em matrioskas. Decorada com veludo vermelho, a lojinha parece deslocada em meio à atmosfera tropical de Jurerê, mas a ideia inusitada de Tatiana tem tido boa resposta. “Este é um lugar universal”, justifica. Jurerê Internacional é um exemplo do empreendedorismo da ilha. Floripa arrisca-se a inovar. “Ainda há estrutura para todos, mas pode vir a faltar”, pondera Zena Becker, presidente da
The other side of the island Forget the natural south for a moment. Look to the north: there’s Jurerê Internacional, the fetish beach that inhabits tourists’ imagination as a paradise of clean streets, beautiful bodies and unforgettable parties. A neighborhood of 500 hectares planned 25 years ago by a contractor from Rio Grande do Sul, Jurerê is a condominium without walls at the edge of a 1.25-mile [2 km] stretch of beach with heightened security – 70 surveillance cameras are being installed – and houses worthy of Beverly Hills. Star soccer player Neymar spent last New Year’s Eve there. Paul McCartney flew over the locale by helicopter. Introduced with the slogan “Prepare your passport, Jurerê is on the way,” this fantastic territory which resembles upscale areas of Miami doesn’t just attract tourists but also residents in search of higher quality of life. This is the case of Brasília native Evandro Ferreira and Minas Gerais-born Henriqueta Cáceres. Committed to the search for a better place to live, the couple tried Belo Horizonte, São Paulo, Brasília and Porto Alegre before finally finding the ideal habitat there. “I like to make the most of the neighborhood’s infrastructure. Jurerê invites people to get out of the house,” says Cáceres, showing the wide sidewalks, the squares and the 19 walkways that connect Passeio dos Namorados to the beach. “We’re right beside nature and we have everything we need here,” Ferreira adds. Russian Tatiana Orlova also fell in love with the neighborhood and, a year ago, she opened an affiliate of her delicate shop Boneca Russa, which specializes in matrioshkas. Decorated in red velvet, the store seems out of place in the midst of Jurerê’s tropical atmosphere, but Orlova’s unusual idea has yielded positive feedback. “This place is universal,” she explains. Jurerê Internacional is an example of the island’s entrepreneurship. Floripa dares to innovate. “There’s an infrastructure for everyone, but it 73

might not be enough,” ponders Zena Becker, president of the NGO FloripAmanhã, which comes up with solutions for more sustainable urbanization. And she reveals the city’s less provincial, more globalized side.
Capital da inovação Eis que esse paraíso do veraneio tem também seu lado Vale do Silício. Há nada menos do que 500 empresas de tecnologia baseadas na capital, que não só geram a maior parte de sua renda como alegram os hotéis durante o inverno, quando ocorrem conferências internacionais até não poder mais. Criador dessa iniciativa nos idos de 1984, o professor Dr. Carlos Alberto Schneider, superintendente-geral da Fundação Certi, explica a sua ideia. “O mais natural é que o turismo ocupe o primeiro lugar nas atividades da ilha. Mas o que fazer no inverno?”, questiona. De lá para cá, foram muitos passos dados rumo à tecnologia de ponta. O próximo é o Sapiens Parque, um megacomplexo de 4,5 milhões de metros quadrados, no norte da ilha, com tudo que se possa imaginar: de um lado, estúdios de cinema, pistas de kart e espaços culturais; do outro, centros de pesquisa diversos; para completar, um enorme Jardim Botânico. Não à toa, mal começou a funcionar e já é considerado referência mundo afora. Até 2030, empregará 32 mil pessoas. Quem quer mandar o currículo?
Capital of innovation Would you believe this summer paradise also has a Silicon Valley side? There are no less than 500 technology companies based in the capital city, not only generating the majority of its revenue, but also boosting the hotel industry in the winter, when numerous international conferences are held. Creator of this initiative in 1984, professor Dr. Carlos Alberto Schneider, general superintendent of the Certi Foundation, explains his idea: “It’s natural that tourism should take first place among the island’s activities. But what do we do in the winter?” he asks. Since then, a number of steps have been taken on the path toward advanced technology. Next up is Sapiens Parque, a megacomplex of 1.7 square miles [4.5 million square m], in the north of the island, with everything you could ever imagine: on one side, there are movie studios, go-kart lanes and cultural spaces; on the other, a variety of research centers; and, to top it off, an enormous botanical garden. It just opened and it’s already considered a reference around the world. By 2030, it will employ 32,000 people. Feel like sending your resume?
Terra estrangeira A Lagoa da Conceição é um bom lugar para se hospedar. Não porque seja muito prática – as vias de acesso “trancam”, como dizem os moradores, com carros que chegam do Centro e partem em direção às praias –, mas por suas pousadas, a maioria frequentada por pessoas de outros países. “Não esperávamos receber tantos estrangeiros. É ótimo, porque podemos sentir a cultura de cada um”, declara Gutemberg Lopes Guedes, que, junto com a mulher, Adriana, concebeu o charme do Quinta das Videiras, hotel-butique em estilo português. Pertinho do centro da Lagoa, já recebeu figurões diversificados, do escritor Luis Fernando Verissimo ao alto escalão do governo de Dubai. Não longe dali, a pousada Janela de Márcia oferece um tipo mais simples de hospedagem, mas que, por isso mesmo, agrada aos aventureiros europeus. “Aqui, na Lagoa, encontramos pessoasde toda espécie: pobres, ricos, artistas, intelectuais”, descreve a proprietária, Márcia Pirmez.
Foreign land Lagoa da Conceição is a good place to stay. Not because it’s practical – its roads are often packed with cars that come from the city center heading toward the beaches –, but because of its guesthouses, many of which are frequented by people from other countries. “We didn’t expect so many foreigners. It’s great because we get to have contact with their cultures,” says Gutemberg Lopes Guedes, who, together with his wife Adriana, founded Quinta das Videiras, a Portuguese-style boutique hotel. Nearby the center of Lagoa, it has welcomed a variety of bigwigs, from writer Luis Fernando Verissimo to high-up members of the Dubai government. Not far from there, the guesthouse Janela de Márcia offers simpler accommodations, which appeal to European adventurers precisely because of this facet. “Here in Lagoa we meet all types of people: poor, rich, artists, intellectuals,” explains owner Márcia Pirmez.

Só mesmo os argentinos escolheram outro canto para chamar de seu: Canasvieiras, no norte, onde no verão se ouve mais castelhano do que português. A cada ano, a capital recebe nada menos do que meio milhão de turistas hermanos, que dirigem por mais de 1.500 quilômetros para veranear ali. Os argentinos também representam, hoje, a maior população estrangeira em Florianópolis. São, no mínimo, 7 mil residentes – o número exato é difícil de calcular, pois muitos se naturalizam. “A cidade deixou-se influenciar pelos argentinos”, observa a consulesa-adjunta Mariana Valeria Bramano, do Consulado da Argentina em Florianópolis.
Only the Argentineans have chosen another corner to call their own: Canasvieiras, in the north, where in the summer you’ll hear more people speaking Spanish than Portuguese. Every year, the capital welcomes no less than 500,000 tourists from Argentina, who drive over 930 miles [1,500 km] to vacation there. Argentineans also currently represent Florianópolis’ biggest foreign population. There are at least 7,000 residents – the exact number is difficult to calculate because many of them have become Brazilian citizens. “The city has allowed itself to be influenced by Argentineans,” observes deputy consul Mariana Valeria Bramano of the Argentinean Consulate in Florianópolis.
Bonita por natureza A ilha de Florianópolis fica próxima ao continente e tem dezenas de praias mapeadas. Em geral, os trechos de areia e mar verde-esmeralda são separados por costões, o que torna a paisagem deslumbrante: com um morro em cada ponta, as praias parecem mais protegidas e paradisíacas. É o caso da bela Praia Mole e de sua vizinha Joaquina. Esta segunda, ícone do surfe nos anos 80, ainda atrai os esportistas que preferem as águas mais agitadas do litoral voltado para o mar aberto. Fãs de sandboard e de stand-up paddle também se concentram por ali. Com cerca de 70% do território formado por unidades de conservação, Floripa é muito, muito verde. Ficar dentro de casa é um desperdício. Mas, depois do chamado “veranico de maio”, o último calorzinho antes dos meses de inverno, nos quais a temperatura gira em torno dos 15oC, resta aos habitantes e visitantes comer a deliciosa tainha recheada, abundante nesse período, e esperar pelo calor de outubro. Seria preciso, porém, bem mais do que um friozinho para espantar quem embarca rumo a uma nova vida na Ilha da Magia. Um ilhéu preocupado com a constante invasão de forasteiros – melhor não nomeá-lo – brinca, por fim: “Acho bom fecharmos as portas de Floripa!”. Em resposta, eu só peço: esperem algumas semanas, até eu chegar. Depois, fiquem à vontade.

In general, the stretches of sand and emerald-green sea are separated by rocky shores, making for stunning landscapes: with a hill at each end, the beaches seem more protected and heavenly. This is the case at the lovely Praia Mole and its neighbor Joaquina. The latter, a hub for surfing in the 1980s, still attracts sportsmen who prefer the more volatile waters of the coast that faces the open sea. Fans of sandboarding and stand-up paddling also flock there. With around 70% of its territory formed by conservation units, Floripa is very, very green. Staying home is a huge waste. But, after the socalled “summer in May,” the last flash of heat before the winter months, in which the temperature hovers around 59 °F [15 °C], residents and visitors are left to enjoy some stuffed mullet, abundant that time of year, and wait for the heat of October. Still, it would take much more than a little chilly weather to scare off those embarking on a new life on the Island of Magic.
