Flower Bulb Collection

2011

Dear Bulb lover, I am proud of presenting our new 2011 catalogue – a catalogue from true ‘bulbaholics’. Fluwel flower bulb company is situated close to the North Sea in the Northern bulb region. As a family based company several generations back, we bring with us the heritage bulb treasure of bulbs into a synergy with modern breeding and growing techniques.

History My father Karel van der Veek was a passionate bulb lover and grower and made a big effort in collecting and conserving our European daffodil heritage. With background in this daffodil collection he hybridized many new varieties and still more varieties will appear from his work and we continue hybridizing and selecting new varieties of daffodils. Today our narcissus collection contains more than 2500 different varieties. Today we grow flower bulbs on appr. 32 Hectares and on our field and in our green houses we furthermore work with cultivation of daffodils, tulips, tulip cut flowers, crocus and chionodoxa. Besides our field work we are proud to show you Amsterdam Tulip Museum when you come to Amsterdam.

Our philosophy: With our team of dedicated bulb specialists we will offer you our high knowledge about bulbs, quality issues and attractive assortment. We are well known as a supplier having highest standard in quality and varieties. In our endeavour work to meet todays and future environmental challenge, we have committed ourselves to mainly promote healthy and easily grown varieties together with locally produced varieties from our neighbors fields. Five years ago the Fluwel company build a wind turbine and today we are proud that we are able to provide you with “green” produced flowerbulbs. We want to cut down in use of varieties which demands big amount of pesticides to produce bulbs: Therefore in our catalogue we mainly use environmentally friendly produced varieties – If you support FLUWEL, you support the Dutch environment. We present a range of different mixtures – here you can of course develop the mixture by adding a few Fritillaria’s, narcisses etc. for making the mix more complex.

Our team of dedicated specialists:

I hope you will enjoy our catalogue. Eric Breed (Tulip Export – bulbs in nature)

Carlos van der Veek (Daffodil specialist )

Jeroen van den Hoek (Forcing specialist)

Best Regards, Carlos van der Veek

Landscape designers frequently ask which tulip to choose when they are preparing a design with perennials and tulips: I have below made a list with “tough tulips” that are more suitable for perennalizing, all of them you will find in our list. For a good result with perennializing tulips it is better to plant the tulips rather deep, at least 10 cm of soil on top of the bulb. • White - Purissima, Exotic Emperor, Hakuun, turkestanica, • Yellow – Conqueror, Beauty of Spring, sylvestris • Pink – Flaming Purissima, Van Eijk, Mystic van Eijk, Design Impression, Lady Jane • Red – Madame Lefeber, Red Impression, Rob Verlinden, Spring Garden, Tinka, • Dark purple – Queen of Night, Negrita. • Orange – Daydream, Prinses Irene, Leo, Orange Emperor.

Daffodils are the number one flower for bringing us the message that spring is coming and when the circumstances are reasonable good they will bloom for you for many years. All the varieties we carry are healthy and good growers that come back easily for many years and most daffodils our list have proven to be perfect for perennializing. From our own nursery we have a selection of very old varieties that are still found around old houses, churches and edges of woody areas from plantings sometimes over a hundred years ago. True perennials. The following varieties are true heirloom daffodils: Actaea (pre-1919), Beryl (pre-1907), Double Campernelle (pre-1611), fernandesii (species), La Belle (pre-1937), Mrs Langtry (pre-1987), Mrs R.O. Backhouse (pre-1921), Princeps (pre-1830), Queen of the North (pre-1908), Rip van Winkle (pre1884), Rose of May (pre-1950), Sea Green (pre-1930) and White Lady (pre-1987).

For many years Hyacinths were a kind of ignored by many a bulb lover. I admit that a tuft of some ten identical hyacinths may look a little bit dull. Old fashioned, even. However, if you put some effort into the planting of hyacinths, the result may be surprisingly pretty and highly original. Personally I find that mixed plantations of different varieties of colourful hyacinths are the most stunning. Each colour has a strong presence, and yet all colours put together are perfectly balanced. A handful of hyacinths thrown around loosely in the borders of a slightly less fixed garden, just a few bulbs per square meter, may create an entirely different spring feeling in your garden. I hope you are willing to give the good old hyacinth another try, just like me.

Special bulbs are the finishing touch in a spring garden. Most of the times the tulips and the daffodils are the most important flowers in the garden but without the decoration of special bulbs it often looks like something is missing. Once planted most of these special bulbs will come back year after year, they are very grateful bulbs. Another great way to use special bulbs is to use them to create “Spring Meadows” by planting them in your lawn. When preparing a spring meadow you must be aware of the conditions the bulbs are planted in: Dry or humid soil, exposure to a lot of sun etc. You must choose the right varieties to the growing conditions. We have picked out varieties for making a meadow in a natural style with different growing conditions: Maintaince: Remember not to cut back grass until the bulb leaves have wilted For areas that are moist and a little shady: • Narcisses, • Allium ursinum • Anemone blanda • Camassia • Erythronium • Fritillaria meleagris

• Galanthus • Hyacinthoides nonscripta • Leucojum Gravetye Giant • Ornithogalum nutans

For areas that are sunny and dry: • Allium aflatunense and sphaerocephalon • Chionodoxa • Crocus • Muscari • Scilla But also Tulip turkestanica, clusiana, Tinka or Lady Jane and our mixture Aladdins carpet are suitable for these areas.

Making mixtures and combination with flower bulbs is my favourite thing to do. Not easy and often a hard puzzle to crack. Flowering time, flower shape and colour do all have to fit each other, but once you find the correct harmony the results often are candy for the eye. Hopefully you will try some of them and please give special attention to ”Fluwel Daffodil mixture”. This beautiful mixture is put together with of all of the extra bulbs of our immense daffodil collection. Explore the world of daffodils, pretty much each bulb you plant is a different variety.
