Every morning when I wake up, I listen for the wind. I have a great big old walnut tree outside my window and it tells me what kind of a day it is going to be. It was planted when Hood River was still Dog River and it knows all about the wind. The Tree tells me whether there is a dawn patrol session waiting for me at the Hatchery. It tells me if I am going kiting at the Sandbar. It tells me if I am going to sail the catamaran with Kassen and the boys.

ut every day, the Tree tells me how it is going to be. And if I don’t listen to it and instead try to go do something else, I always wish I had just listened to the Tree. Yesterday was a morning session. The Tree woke me up with howls and snaps and a few gusts that made it sound like it was going to land right on my van. It was windy. I rolled out of bed and snuck down the stairs. Between November and March, four pairs of skis and a couple snowboards live in the van. Between March and November, my boards, sails and kites live in the van. March and November can be crowded and confusing months in my crowded little microbus. But there is never anything to load. Just coffee in the top of the coffee-maker. Out the door, down through town and across the bridge. As I cross the bridge I try to decide on a spot. Is it going to be Doug’s Beach for some solitary morning swerving? Or Swell City to visit with friends and cruise the morning groomers. Or is it going to be the Hatchery for some pre-breakfast ripping? With so many different places to sail, where you slip off to really has a lot less to do with conditions than it does with what you feel like. At any given point in the day, there is usually somewhere along the Columbia River that will be exactly what you are looking for. No matter where I am headed, I love the feeling of a good early morning session. The air is crisp, people are just starting to wake up and when you see someone else out and about, it feels like the two of you are sharing a secret. And in the parking lot of the Hatchery, you know you are sharing a secret.
