GOD IS ALWAYS DOING

SOMETHING NEW joy to see young people from our Eden community in Salt River dancing with smiles on their faces – these are young kids who would normally be recruited by gangs for crime and drugs, but our teams are recruiting them to bring hope and life!

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAIR OF TRUSTEES Dear friend, Our key scripture at The Message Trust is Isaiah 43:19: ‘See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness, and streams in the wasteland.’

It was also a privilege to hear the stories of young men who were once in prison, involved in crime but now speaking about faith in Christ and how they are working and giving back to society. Only Jesus can do a new thing of this magnitude in someone’s life. One other thing I loved this year was hearing about the stories coming out of our new coffee shop in Mowbray, a social enterprise run by young men who have come through our prison programme. This is no normal coffee shop, it’s a coffee shop with a difference. I love that these young men can share their story and bring hope to others while serving amazing coffee. It’s a place where hope is found and God’s story is being told.

During this past financial year, we have continuously seen God doing a new thing. He has been doing a new thing by birthing new projects and initiatives to reach young people, a new thing by adding new staff to our amazing team and most importantly a new thing in the lives of the many young people we work with.

I am excited about the year ahead, and we are trusting God for many new things in this next financial year. New stories of transformation, new projects and new people joining the movement to see a generation of urban heroes raised up across our beautiful city.

That’s why I am excited to be a part of The Message. In February at our annual Vision Night I was struck by all the new things that have been birthed this year. It was a

With all the great new stories we are telling it is important for the organisation to continue its commitment to good governance. Our board has embarked on a process of identifying and optimizing our

governance practices. This will bring the organisation in line with South Africa’s King IV Report™ on Corporate Governance as well as key international standards. Our investment in good governance supports our management and expansion of the resources provided to us. Enjoy this report which shares in more detail all the new things that have been happening. Thanks for your ongoing support and for partnering with us in making a difference in Cape Town and beyond. Blessings,

REPORT FROM THE CEO TIM TUCKER LOOKS BACK ON 2017

2017 was a significant year for The Message South Africa. As it was our fourth year of ministry in Cape Town we asked ourselves questions about our purpose and how we could prepare for sustainable growth. Through this process of strategic planning, we considered what our unique contribution is to the church and communities across Cape Town. As we reflected on how God has been leading us, we came up with a simple description that unifies all we do as The Message: we are catalysts for new stories through the gospel. In this Annual Report you will not only find data • IDENTITY about how The Message is performing, but we pray We go where others may find it difficult to go you will be inspired by the stories of the lives of many in order to present the gospel and expect lives to young people that we have the privilege of serving. be changed by Jesus. We go to tough neighbourhoods and prisons so we can With our focus on being catalysts of new stories, we identify young people with potential and share were further able to describe our strategy through the Christian message of hope with them. three words: identify – platform – mission. • PLATFORM Our various programmes provide a platform for young people who want to leave the gangs/ prison and rebuild their lives to become productive members of society. Our programmes are infused with biblical teaching and intentionally point people to Jesus. We deliver programmes in tough communities, prison, schools and through micro-business.

• MISSION Above: UK Academy student on mission in Eden Nyanga

4 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18

Ultimately we want the young people we reach to recognise that they themselves can be used by God to make a difference in the world – that they can go out on mission and start a ripple effect of transformation.

AS YOU WILL SEE IN THIS REPORT, OUR FOUR STREAMS – MESSAGE ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME, EDEN, CREATIVE MISSION AND GANGSTAR ENTERPRISES – ARE SERVING AS CATALYSTS FOR NEW STORIES THROUGH THE PROCESS OF IDENTIFY – PLATFORM – MISSION. THIS IS HOW GOD IS RAISING UP URBAN HEROES WHO AREA THEMSELVES BECOMING TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERS IN CAPE TOWN AND BEYOND. SPECIFICALLY, HERE’S THE PROGRESS OUR TEAM MADE TOWARDS OUR 2017 BIG FIVE GOALS:

GOAL THREE

GOAL ONE

GOAL TWO

LAUNCH OUR FIRST GANGSTAR CAFÉ

RECRUIT 15 NEW URBAN MISSIONARIES TO JOIN OUR EDEN TEAMS

In March we opened our first café in partnership with the Protestant Association. Currently called The Mess Café, the café has employed four ex-offenders and has a growing customer base.

Recruiting the right volunteers is essential in developing new Eden teams and we didn’t reach this target in the 2017 financial year. This remains a critical focus area for us in order to both strengthen our current teams and respond to churches who desire to start Eden.

GOAL FOUR

GOAL FIVE

FINALISE THE ONE-YEAR MESSAGE ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME (MEP) CURRICULUM

TO REACH 40,000 YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH SCHOOLS, CONCERTS, CAMPS AND CHURCH ENGAGEMENT

Following three years of development, we now have a cohesive and integrated curriculum for MEP students. This incorporates three areas: MEP in prison, MEP reintegration, and MEP Homes

We are excited to report that our mission teams achieved this target through events, school programmes, youth groups and church visits

PLACE 10 EX-OFFENDERS IN SUSTAINABLE EMPLOYMENT THROUGH OUR REINTEGRATION STRATEGY Our MEP team launched our reintegration programme for ex-offenders in September. We held our first graduation in January. We are excited to report that 8 are now in permanent employment.

PRISONS MESSAGE ENTERPRISE PROGRAMME WRITTEN BY MARK SLESSENGER, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

Working with young men in prison over the past fourteen years has taught us there is no quick fix. Breaking the cycle of crime and gangsterism is complex – requiring intensive, long-term support and mentorship. Over the years, I have seen thousands of young people trapped in their destructive lifestyles with many not knowing how to get out.

OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS 23 MEP GRADUATES HAVE FOUND JOBS AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM IS STILL IN EMPLOYMENT

8 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18

In contrast to this reality, I have never been more excited about what we are doing through MEP. This past year we have made great strides in providing each young person we meet with the support they need to grow in faith and life. There are many organisations working in prisons and doing amazing work. However, it’s what happens after a young person is released that we see as the greatest challenge and the place where support is most needed. Of the hundreds of juvenile offenders released monthly on parole, most don’t live in a stable home environment and can’t find employment nor have mentors to help them.

That’s why this year we launched our new reintegration initiative. MEP Reintegration offers a similar programme to the one we operate in Drakenstein Youth Prison, except we are able to provide practical training alongside theory, and test the commitment of each individual once released. Through our first class we managed to place six young men directly into employment – this means that over the past few years 23 MEP graduates have found jobs and every single one of them is still in employment. With a cost to the government of approximately R10,000 a month to house someone in prison and a national reoffending rate between 75-85%, we are effectively saving the taxpayer around R172,500 per month. This is a remarkable statistic – and seeing that of the 25 graduates since MEP began only two have reoffended, you can see how MEP is making a massive difference.

BIG GOAL To have 50 new young men in our MEP process. Having fully established the MEP system, we now want to begin to increase our impact and prepare for scalable growth.

Left: Drakenstein Prison Right: Shepherd sharing his story of transformation

Although breaking the cycle of crime and gangsterism is exciting, the most exciting thing for us is seeing our young men follow Jesus and change their lifestyles. It’s not enough to see culture change through employment, we desire to see these young men become good fathers, faithful in marriage and becoming community leaders and influencers. To see graduates doing this and impacting others is the real fruit from MEP. There are too many stories to record in this report, but don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to hear more about all that God is doing!

‘Not being able to read or write led Shepherd Pani to join a gang in school. This caused him to end up in prison serving a sentence for drug trafficking.

While in prison, Shepherd knew he needed to change. He accepted the Lord as his Saviour and taught himself how to read and write. After he was released, he found out about The Message Trust and became one of the first young men accepted to go through the new Reintegration Programme, learning intensive life skills and how to prepare for employment. Upon completion, Shepherd was selected as an intern at The Mess Café where he is now training as a barista. ‘I’m thankful for The Message Trust and the Mess Café for the opportunity and the platform. Before I wasn’t able to speak about the challenge of not being able to read or write, but now I’m now able to share my story.’

Gangstar merchandise

CHRIST-CENTRED ENTERPRISE GANGSTAR ENTERPRISES WRITTEN BY MARK SLESSENGER, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR has been exciting to see the conversation about crime, gangsterism and social justice opened up through the café.

The highlight of this past financial year was launching our first Gangstar Café (previously known as Mess Café) in Mowbray. The cafe has provided job opportunities for six young men out of prison and sells great coffee, food and merchandise, as well as providing catering events through our ice cream business. We hired our first business manager, Mark Harrison, who has done a great job in managing the team and stabilising the business. Our goal for Christ-centred enterprise in 2016 was to create opportunities for up to ten prison (MEP) graduates within Gangstar Enterprises. In 2016, in conjunction with our prison aftercare team, we worked with eight young men who were released from prison, and continued to employ a further three ex-offenders who were already working in our micro-businesses. Of the eight who were released in 2016, seven continue in their employment with us, while one has returned to prison. This is a great success when compared to national reoffending rates. This year we have seen the great potential of the café and the business model has been well received by the public. We have seen our young men share their stories with university students, churches, partner organisations and corporate partners throughout the year. There is a story of transformation in every cup of coffee and it

10 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18

A steady job is required for any person wanting to leave crime and gangsterism. It has been amazing to see how work has enabled one of our young men to grow in faith and life. For one, it helped him provide care for his newly born son, for another it helped him provide care for his family, for another it helped him leave a life of heroin addiction, for yet another it provided an opportunity for him to start building his own home. It is our desire to grow the business model of Gangstar Café in 2018/19. Providing training and entry-level employment helps furnish each individual with practical work experience before entering the employment marketplace. One encouragement is that one of our baristas, Simphiwe, will be our first Gangstar Café graduate as he joins another coffee store in May 2018.

GANGSTAR CAFÉ LAUNCHED

INCREASED TURNOVER FROM THE BUSINESSES TO ABOVE R500,000

Simphiwe has been with Gangstar Café since its inception and will now be managing a coffee shop through one of our partners in Simon’s Town. This is just one story of many we would like to tell. Through our Message Business Network (MBN) we hosted three breakfasts this year and invited businesses to get involved and offer opportunities for our graduates. As a black-owned business, Gangstar Café is a wonderful way for corporates to give Enterprise Development funding and get their BEE rating up. We expect Gangstar Café to grow from strength to strength this next year but we would need further support from corporates, churches and partner organisations. Please consider getting behind this initiative and breaking the cycle of crime and gangsterism in our nation.

In 2015 Mthetheli Ngaxe (MT for short) joined our MEP class in Drakenstein Prison and immediately showed an interest and passion for business. This led to him joining Gangstar Enterprises on his release from prison. MT first started working in all areas of the business but in 2017 he was employed in our merchandise division, Gangstar Gear. ‘Gangstar Gear has created a platform for me to share my testimony and this has enabled me to sell T-shirts and caps to others. It’s been great to speak to businesses, students, churches about Gangstar and what God has done in my life. My desire is to grow Gangstar Gear to open opportunities for my brothers coming out of prison, so they can also share their stories.’

NYANGA The team’s dream to see a safe space for children to do homework after school is getting closer to reality as we’re in the process of securing a container. The team is being trained through Outliers, who mentor facilitators to run safe spaces for learning. The Nyanga team are passionate evangelists and have started weekly door-to-door sessions, sharing the love of Jesus

SALT RIVER

COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION

The team has been kept busy with a great initiative, The Mustard Seed. It’s a home for a ministry couple and a few women within the community providing a safe space and a place for flourishing. This project is both exciting and faithstretching, as they go ahead with needed renovations and trust God for finances to flow in. God continues to bring people to himself through the team in Salt River, and we often hear testimonies of people coming to know new life through him.

EDEN

PAROW

WRITTEN BY GRANT PORTHEN,

We’re excited to plant a new Eden team in Parow, in partnership with The Lighthouse Church. After a successful Exploring Eden session, we’re in the process of recruiting those who feel called to join.

EDEN NETWORK

Eden is a partnership between local churches and teams of ordinary people living extraordinary lives in intentional, missional community. Our teams move into difficult neighbourhoods where gangsterism and crime are high, bringing the love of Jesus and the hope of transformation. We are passionate about:

SACRIFICIALLY • SHARING THE GOSPEL • BUILDING AUTHENTIC COMMUNITY • LIVING

12 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18

We currently have three established urban missional teams and one team on its way. We continue to be excited about what God has done through the teams this past financial year. PELICAN PARK The Pelican Park team felt God lead them to establish a safe house in their community. They’ve seen the need for a peaceful home where those suffering from drug addiction can be rehabilitated in the context of healthy family. They’re in the initial stages of planning and gaining insight from other organisations in the area who could play a part. We’re trusting God with this exciting initiative!

2018 GOALS FOR EDEN

SHELDON’S STORY

1. HEALTH CHECK Assessments of all teams, monitoring what’s working, and what needs development.

2. CONTEXTUALISE EDEN IN SOUTH AFRICA Documenting all processes required in the healthy functioning of a team in a relevant, South Africa-focused context, including community mapping.

3. PLANT ONE NEW EDEN TEAM 4. TEAM FORMATION Provide training in order for Eden teams to continue to thrive.

5. STRENGTHEN THE EDEN NETWORK Make space for Eden teams and associated groups to meet, strengthening fellowship and sharing ideas.

‘I became part of a gang in high school. I lived in constant darkness and fear, becoming addicted to heroin. ‘After serving a six-year prison sentence, I went back to my old ways, falling into addiction until I joined a group for recovering addicts. ‘I heard Grant Porthen (Eden’s Regional Coordinator) share his testimony at a church service and I related completely! He invited me for lunch and God spoke to me in a miraculous way, which led me to give my life to Jesus.

CREATIVE MISSION WRITTEN BY MARK SLESSENGER, OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

We’re passionate about engaging with as many young people as we can to share the good news about Jesus Christ. We’ve increased our number of mission teams from one to four in the last eighteen months. Our four mission teams are: • KINETIC IV – A POP BAND USING

MUSIC AS A PLATFORM TO REACH YOUNG PEOPLE • RESPECT ME AND REFOCUS – DELIVERING SCHOOL LESSONS ON DIFFICULT TOPICS LIKE IDENTITY, SEXUALITY AND GANGSTERISM • GENETIK SESSIONS – A CREATIVE ARTS INITIATIVE PROVIDING A SAFE SPACE FOR YOUTH AT RISK TO LEARN PERFORMANCE SKILLS INCLUDING DANCE AND SINGING 14 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18

This past financial year we saw great growth as our teams worked in 38 schools across Cape Town. Kinetic IV performed to thousands of young people and our Respect ME and ReFocus teams ran 38 sessions teaching about God’s view on topics such as sex, pornography, relationships and gangsterism. One school learner wrote on a card after a Respect ME session: ‘I know my true identity now and don’t have to cut myself anymore.’ It’s heart-breaking to know so many of our children and young people carry such heavy burdens, but we are privileged to speak life and hope into their lives and be a reminder that there is hope, they are beautiful, and they are made in God’s image. Our work through Genetik Sessions has greatly enhanced our creative mission work. Often, young people in tough neighbourhoods are lured into a life of crime and gangsterism. One of the

ways we can counter this is to equip the church to provide different pathways for our youth. Genetik Sessions works with a local church to offer a safe space in the local community to empower youth through dance, rap and music. We launched our first hub in Salt River and it was a joy to see these young people perform with big smiles on their faces at our recent Vision Night. During the next financial year we would like to see six Genetik Sessions hubs reaching hundreds of children across Cape Town. Finally, another highlight was Kinetic IV’s latest single ‘This is Our Time’ – an anthem cry for South Africa. We long for gangsterism, crime, unemployment and violence to end and a time for our young people to rise up and fulfil their Godgiven potential. I hope you will stand with us and help us share this message with thousands more young people over the next year.

Originally from Mitchells Plain, Lyle teaches hip-hop dance to our Genetik Sessions young people in Salt River, Cape Town. He has a passion to help kids express themselves and find belonging through dance. Lyle is passionate about his home community of Mitchells Plain where young people are caught up in gangsterism and crime – he longs to be able to launch a Genetik Sessions hub there someday. ‘I found a sense of belonging through dance. In Mitchells Plain there are so many other paths you can follow which are negative – like gangsterism, where nothing really ever lifts you up. But dance has lifted me up and I want to tell others that dance can be a place of belonging and positive expression.’

FINANCIAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED FEBRUARY 2018

The financial information presented below includes the figures from the enterprises owned by The Message Trust through the Gangstar Enterprise Development company, and form part of the group accounts.

During the financial year Mar17-Feb18 income received was a total of R5 886 646, an increase of 53% from the previous year. The significant increase in income is partly as a result of the inclusion of sales from the enterprises of R 554 208 (12% of income), but is also due to a marked increase in grants and donations. Donations from companies and individuals that believe in the mission of The Message Trust increased 52% to R2 828 991 (48% of income), while grant funding from foundations and grant-making agencies doubled to R2 121 184 (36% of total income). Interest earned increased as the cash held by the organisation was higher throughout the year due to the increased income, as well as specific funds held in trust, such as the building fund raised in the previous year and the newly implemented staff development fund. THE TOTAL INCOME BREAKDOWN FOR THE ORGANISATION IS AS FOLLOWS: Donation & grants

Fundraising & other income

Grants and donations continue to make up the bulk of the income for the organisation. Since the enterprises became separate companies last year, sales are primarily made up of KinetikIV CD sales and performance fees. During the financial year the organisation and the enterprise spent R5 402 735, an increase of 32% on last year (which did not include the enterprises). As usual, the largest expense is personnel costs at 60% of total expenditure, followed by The Message International contribution, cost of sales ( for the enterprises) and premises costs each at 7% of expenditure, and professional fees at 4%. The net profit for the group was R483 911. The Message Trust made a profit of R744 840 while both businesses made losses.

OUR 2018 GOALS TIM TUCKER INTRODUCES OUR 2020 VISION, NEW STORIES AND URBAN HEROES

We trust you’ve been encouraged through reading this annual report. Over the past year we’ve been developing our vision for 2020 and beyond. Our desire is to strengthen our structures and programmes over the coming year as we prepare for growth.

WE HAVE A FIVE-YEAR VISION TO BE A CATALYST FOR NEW STORIES AS WE DEVELOP AN ENVIRONMENT THAT ENABLES URBAN HEROES TO FLOURISH IN FAITH AND LIFE. In 2022, we are planning to host our first city-wide youth evangelism initiative called the Higher Tour. Over the next five years we want to cultivate partnerships across the city with churches, businesses, schools and communities in order that this might have a significant, culture-shifting impact. We believe that mobilising young people for missions is critical if we are to stem the tide of gang violence that plagues communities across Cape Town. Our key verse for 2018 is Romans 1:16 and our motto is ‘Not Ashamed’. We are more convinced than ever that transformation will come as we clearly present the gospel of Jesus Christ and provide an environment for youth at risk to flourish in faith and life. We have four main goals for the 2019 financial year which will contribute to our 2020 and beyond vision:

18 MESSAGE SOUTH AFRICA ANNUAL REPORT 2017/18

GOAL ONE

GOAL TWO

TO BE IN PURPOSEFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH 50 CHURCHES ACROSS CAPE TOWN

TO HOST OUR FIRST URBAN HERO AWARDS ON THURSDAY 1 NOVEMBER

Our desire is to grow our base of partner churches committed to reaching youth at risk with the gospel – particularly as we prepare for the Higher Tour in 2022

The Urban Hero Awards is a special event where we honour ex-offenders and former gang members who, against all odds, are now making a huge difference in society. It will be a black tie, red carpet event – the Oscars for former gang members and ex-offenders. This will become an annual event and will contribute towards our vision to be a catalyst for new stories in South Africa, and to raise awareness and engender hope through these amazing individuals.

GOAL THREE

GOAL FOUR

TO SEE 50 NEW YOUNG MEN THROUGH OUR MEP PROCESS

TO LAUNCH AN EDEN TEAM IN PAROW

Having fully established the MEP system, we now want to begin to increase our impact and prepare for scalable growth.

In partnership with Lighthouse Church, we aim to launch our first Eden team in the northern suburbs – extending our reach into a new area of Cape Town.

Finally, I’d like to extend a huge thank-you to all our partners, supporters and prayer warriors who stand with us. God has provided miraculously for us over this past year. We are still looking for a permanent premises and this remains a matter for prayer. We are also looking to increase our number of monthly donors with a target of 200 new supporters for this year. Please prayerfully consider supporting the work in this way so we can increase our impact across the city.
