Flow is delighted to showcase the work of two established Norwegian ceramicists, Nina Malterud and Astrid Sleire, during London Craft Week 2020 and in collaboration with the Norwegian Embassy.

The exhibition will showcase the sculptural qualities of Astrid’s work with the experimental, painterly wall plates by Nina.

Through distinct practices and varying techniques, these two artists share a similar approach through texture, glaze and colour.

Astrid Sleire’s abstract forms can be seen as fragments that refer to both architecture and nature. Once created each form is then deconstructed, so that new shapes appear through the dismantling of the original object. The fragments are in transformation, referring to changing surroundings, to what remains unfinished and is continuously evolving.

The forms are assembled together to create a ceramic landscape. Exploring balance, movement with each component in conversation with the other.

Nina Malterud

Nina Malterud works with forms that are traditionally associated with functional objects and ceramic history. The interaction between layers of glaze during several firings transforms the flat plate form. Through the depth of glaze the object becomes alive and achieves a painterly quality. These chemical reactions create sensuous fluid patterns becoming reminiscent of landscape paintings. Her making process specifically makes use of ceramic glaze materials and their formal qualities. The glazing is not a precise action and cannot be exactly repeated as a result, but only traced back to the ingredients. This is the very theme of her work- to find an unexpected beauty in the marks from the process. The cracks, pinholes and other ceramic “faults� are all very welcome in her work. Malterud takes many risks during the glazing and firing causing a then strict selection process from the results.

This exhibition has been supported by The Norwegian Embassy and is part of London Craft Week. Flow is a renowned contemporary craft gallery situated in the heart of Notting Hill and was established by Yvonna Demczynska in 1999. The gallery features around six exhibitions a year as well as having a permanent collection, curated by Flow as well as guest curators, and includes ceramic, wooden and metal objects and jewellery.
