Vendor Guide ETSY MADE LOCAL PERTH - State Theatre Centre of WA
ETSY MADE LOCAL is a national initiative celebrating the crafters, collectors and artisans in local communities across Australia. From coast to coast, cities and towns will be participating on November 19. You are involved in something that is bigger than just selling your stuff at a weekend market. You are part of a community of like minded artists. We hope that the mission and values of ETSY are alive in our local market, and that on the 19th, we can see it in the ways we value each others craftmaship, inspire you to be a part of and are included in everything we do, are mindful, transparent and humane business operators, and above all have fun and keep it real! EFTPOS & Credit Card Payments
It’s important to tell the world where the party is at. Hint: It’s Perth.
It’s quite common for people not to carry cash. To make the sale, you’ll need to be able to handle EFTPOS and credit card payments. Here’s a few options:
Social media is an effective and free way to do that. It also helps fans of your products stay up to date with what you’re doing and where you’re at. Below are the 3 main forms of social media that we recommend. Facebook Twitter Instagram Don’t forget to use one or all of the following hashtags in all your posts relating to the event. #etsymadelocal #wastreetteam #shoplocal
Flyers
It’s super common for customers to ask for your card so they can find you later or tell others about your products.
Info about your shop and products.
+
A small travel one from your local pharmacy or office works should be enough. Just a little something for small scratches or cuts.

Paypal Card Reader or TILE You can buy these from Office Works. No ongoing costs, they take a cut of sales. Warning: This can take a couple of weeks to get set up. So be sure to hassle them via phone for speedier approval. Mobile EFTPOS Terminal A device you can get from your bank. There are generally all sorts of fees to think about. EFTPOS Buddy Does one of your market neighbours have an EFTPOS device? Before the market starts, ask if you can use theirs if you have any sales, not everyone is comfortable with doing that, so don’t feel offended if they decline. There is no harm in asking.
Business Cards
First Aid Kit
Paypal App You’ve gotta enter card details in manually and you can also accept payments via Paypal.

Packaging + Bags
Presentation
Be sure to have some paper bags handy to put your products into. We recommend that you make a stamp with your branding on it to let the world know where they purchased something as they walk around the event.
Your stall should be inviting and well presented.
Be sure to put your business card in there.
It should be easy for people to see what you have on offer. Think about what style goes well with your products. Add decorative elements to your stall. A plant here and there and a bit of colour can turn your stall into the life of the party.
Look after yourself
Stay Hydrated
Plan breakfast and lunch
Taking Breaks
Drink plenty of water. It’s probably going to be a long warm day.
Where are you getting food from? You can bring a sandwich in from home or purchase from the food service vendors.
You’re probably going to need to take a break. When you do, who is going to look after your stall? Here is where community rocks - ask your neighbour or ask one of us - we wear many hats :-)
Safety - for our records!
Don’t forget to ‘sign in’ in the morning and grab an Exhibitor’s Card. Someone will be waiting ON STAGE checking you off and handing cards out in the morning. (You may also be given some special treats ;-) Talking to Customers
Seating
Say hello with confidence and be friendly, ask about their day but don’t be pushy if they’d rather not chat.
Be positive and smile and STAND UP!
Have stories ready about your shop and products. For example: • I make all of these by xxx • It takes me this long • They’re inspired by xxx • Or ‘Oh, yes that product, I made it originally for a friend and then people kept asking me to make more!’

We recommend that you stand at your stall. To be comfortable standing all day, we recommend those cheap foam exercise mats, it can make all the difference. If you can’t stand all day and must sit, then we recommend that you sit in a visible location, up front and behind a counter or table- stools are best. People are accustomed to approaching counters to buy things or ask questions but are less fond of approaching someone sitting in a corner.
The DOs and DON’Ts of stall design
How you design your stall and layout your products is up to you, but we do have some tips for beginners on what’s good and what’s bad.
DON’T
Layout your products flat on a table A common rookie mistake is to lay all their products down flat on a table. This is inconvenient for shoppers and does not make for an attractive stall. Your stall should be inviting from a distance, things laid flat on a table isn’t going to cut it.
DO
Create visual interest Avoid symmetry. Add props that fit with the theme of your products. Do you crochet toys? Add a bolt of wool with a hook as decoration. Do sell prints? Add a lamp shade or small plants to your stall.
DO
Use props and shelving to get products close to eye level. Get your products as close to your shoppers eye level as you can (that’s also safe). Vary the height of those props. Boxes are great for this sort of thing.
DO
Research www.pinterest.com/search/?q=market+display
DO
A dry run Set up your display at home, well in advance of the market. Get the opinion of friends or family and roleplay in a shopper/seller scenario.
Finally: It’s not a competition
I WIN
A market is about selling things, but it’s not about selling more than everyone else. We’ve kept the store price low so you don’t have to panic about making hundreds of bucks to cover costs. Every market is also about you advertising and marketing your business, getting your name and products in front of people's eyes. You never know who will pick up a business card and contact you later. Many local shopowners go to markets to seek out new and original wares for their store and may contact you about becoming a stockist. There's a lot more to your stall on market day than the sales you get. It’s also about enjoying yourself and using the opportunity to connect with shoppers AND other stall holders. The best markets are the ones where we can all have a chat with each other and help each other out. Remember our ETSY value? “We believe fun should be a part of everything we do” - so go, have fun!
