OK GO! We are pleased to present FL WAKE’s first all wakeskate issue! This issue was planned out to pay homage to one aspect of our sport that is growing exponentially. The talent that’s out there now is absolutely unbelievable. I’m always hearing about some unknown rider somewhere that just throws down! And not to mention the tricks that the industries top pros are doing now. I personally love wakeskating and I never imagined that it would grow so fast. I really thought that it would be a few more years until we saw some of the tricks that are being done on a regular basis now. And this was possible not just because of talent but because of the mind set of the average rider. There is a definitive single consciousness as what the sport needs to set itself apart from every other aspect of watersports and gain the respect and support that wakeskating deserves. I have recently come to grips with the fact that I will never be able to push the sport with my own riding. However, I will continue to do what I can for the sport with this magazine and the events that I do. I will leave the riding to this new crop of wakeskaters that have seemingly come out of nowhere and will soon be running the show. So to all the wakeskaters out there that see a positive future, keep it up, it’s working. And to those of you that don’t wakeskate, pick one up and try it out. You might just have some fun.

VIDEO REVIEW THE HOMELESS VIDEO Are you looking for a new way to ride the lip, or even hit the wake? If so, this video isn’t for you. In case you have been living under a rock, and don’t know who the Homeless crew is, they are here with this video and ready to set you straight. In an attempt to show everyone that you don’t need to spend the big dollars to have fun on your skate, Homeless has come out with possibly their most ground breaking video to date - an all winch-riding extravaganza! That’s right - no boats, jetskis, or even cables! Winching is the here and now of our sport, and they are ready to show you why. With Kyle Murphy and Nick V. jumping off 20 ft. drops, Brandon Rau backside 180’n everything, and Ben Horan defining the phrase flicked, you won’t be able to tear your eyes away. The spots speak for themselves and you will not believe the level these guys are taking it to. This video even has an outstanding soundtrack that exemplifies the beauty and calmness of hitting natural gaps. And with an ending sequence that will inundate your mind with such force that it may explode, you are sure to be captivated from start to finish. So whether you strap on bindings or lace up shoes, join the next generation of our sport and pick up your copy now. - Adam Aslanian
A LOOK BACK: CLASSIC VIDEO REVIEW
FILL IN THE BLANKS For those of you that haven’t been wakeskating that long, this video is a classic. Not only was it one of the first all wakeskate videos, but it showcased some new and fresh talent that at the time wasn’t getting a lot of coverage. Which is, of course, what wakeskating and especially this publication is all about. This film was made at a time when Cassette ruled the sport, integrity was getting noticed and it seemed like Kampus had a slew of amazing talent that you just knew was going to go on and shake things up. Some of my favorite parts are the cassette montages which showed that these guys were not only the best at what they did, but that they also knew how to have fun, and it shows in their riding. I also really liked Clint Thompkins part which was impressive for both his flip tricks and rail riding. Phillip Basino’s section showcases smoothness even when he does the most technical of lip tricks. And then there is George Daniels breakthrough part. It helped shoot him into the spotlight as one of the industries elite. GD and Aaron Reed and been in an unspoken contest to see who would land the first ever backside 180 kick flip. Well GD won and it is his final trick in one of the best sections in a wakeskate film ever. Another fun thing about this video is going back to watch old TOE JAM footage and seeing how far we have come in such a short time. So for all of you that are new to wakeskating, check this video out and get to know your roots. You probably wouldn’t even be on that board if wasn’t for things like this. And for you veterans like me, pull this classic video out and remember our meager beginnings. - Jimmie Walker

FL WRAP-UP
By: Chad Thompson There are booms and bangs in life, but when it’s a blast, you’re going to hear it! The BLAST! Wakeskate Competition had its second coming this past October. Its creator, Jimmie Walker, was hard at work with friends for weeks, planning out this explosion of wakeskate talent. Riders and fans alike arrived to McCormicks Ski School in Tampa, Florida to witness the underground wakeskate scene take hold of our sport and shove it in the correct direction. Doubling up the talent from the first BLAST! competition, there were four divisions at part Deux: beginner, advanced (unsponsored), pro, and a womens’ division. Riders included the likes of Nick Taylor, John Ruark, Andrew Pastura, and Stef Tor, just to name a few. Ruark almost stomped a kickflip and a

360 flip off of a ridiculous water ski ramp. If you didn’t bring your bag of flip tricks you probably didn’t get noticed. In the pro division a kickflip was almost as common as a shuv, and attempts at almost every flip trick were tried. Stef Tor went down on all her attempts of kickflips, but you better believe the women are stepping it up. Jenny Gilanfarr stomped her tricks with the most style I’ve seen from a girl, and Tori and Summer would have showed up most of the beginners. As expected, wakeskating was taken to a new level by the riders that are mostly not getting paid and some even spend money to be at BLAST! These riders and events such as blastcomps are the future of wakeskating,
so go to flwakemagazine.com and find them on myspace. Also, start wakeskating now so you can enter the next, Greg needs some competition.

BLAST! PART DEUX By: Jimmie Walker The first BLAST! Wakeskate Competition took place way back in 2005 and it got some coverage in Wakeboarding Magazine. That event was my first experience getting industry support and coverage, and it helped pave the way for me to be where I am now. That very first BLAST! Competition turned out so well that it only made sense for us to do it all over again. This time around the sport had grown enough for us to double the amount of kids that showed up to compete. We had over 50 competitors in an all wakeskate event! The wakeskate community was excited about this event because it really is all about the sport and the kids that make it up. Not to mention it is one of only a small handful of events devoted solely to wakeskating. And ultimately, even though it’s a competition, BLAST! is more about hanging out and having a good time than it is stressing out over who will podium. But c’mon - it is a contest and the kids that threw down and placed, well, they got hooked up big. And for the rest of the crowd, we did a mean product toss that included more gear than most events even give out to their event winners! Those of us that put on the event, we couldn’t be happier with the turnout. We worked day and night in the prior weeks to get ready for what became a very memorable day. I would personally like to thank Jason Rumel, Mike Delach, Chad Thompson, Stu Shinn, Josh Kirby, David Hanson, Keef, GRASSO, and all the sponsors for coming together and making this event possible. Lastly, many thanks to the riders and wake enthusiasts that showed up to participate and support.

FL WRAP-UP Each year every pro rider really steps their game up for one contest and one contest only, the Byerly Toe Jam. This year’s Toe Jam tour finals were no exception. With the contest coming full circle and ending back in Orlando, boat, rail, cable, and winch final events brought more hammers than you could shake a nail at. Day one brought on the boat finals. Sixteen riders went head to head. Bringing notable boat wake shredders such as: James Balzer with his smooth style, Reed Hansen going for front heel fives off the wake, and Nick Taylor, well doing every type of three possible. But the final two riders this stop were the veteran, Brian Grubb versus the competition kid, Ben Kaiser. At the end of the day no one could argue the Brian Grubb didn’t earn his second boat win that year. The following day brought on the rail and winch finals, the most heated day in to jam history. Everyone brought their “A” game. Brett Little with his tech switch trickery, Brian Grubb’s flawless rail ability, and Reed Hansen’s dialed flip tricks. Even with all of this the final two came down to the favored Nick Taylor and the upset Ben Horan. After Nick laid down a solid final run, it was Ben’s turn. Somehow Ben pulled out every trick possible, on rails and off the water. And even after laying down a winning run Ben does the unimaginable, off the flat rail, a back board kickflip out. A trick never does before, much less done in contest. The crowd went wild and the toe jam had a new winner. That evenings winch finals gave Clint Thompkins a change to throw down tech tricks everywhere. Front and back lip slides, switch front board, huge shuv out of the gap, and to top it all off a frontside 270 a switch front board to take the win. The weekend was capped off by the cable park finals at the Orlando Watersports Complex. On the last day it came down to Brett Little and Reed Hansen. Reed did not disappoint the crowd and decided to throw down as many flip tricks he could, including a flats 3-flip and flats double flip to take the win. The riding at Toe Jam finals this past fall was on a whole new level. This spring the tour starts up again, and it’s only going to get bigger and better. And I already know of a couple new faces that are dropping hammers in everyone’s faces this spring. So keep you eyes open and come out this spring to the bro fest known as the Byerly Toe Jam.

STEVE CAMPBELL
{
I met Steve Campbell for the first time at a grass roots contest in Tampa. He showed up to ride in the wakeskate division and was up against some serious competition, most of whom I already knew. Well, I had to judge that contest and guess what, Steve ended up winning that event. Afterwards we spoke for a bit and he gave me one of his “sponsor me” videos that he had at the time. (It was before he had sponsors.) I couldn’t believe how many flip tricks this guy could do! Other people were amazed as well, because not too long after that he got picked up by Gator. Nowadays, you can see Steve and his tricks in the Transgression video.
Interview: Jimmie Walker FL WAKE: Tell everyone who you are, how old you are, and where you’re from. STEVE CAMPBELL: I am “Southside” Steve Campbell, I am 27 years old, and I am from Orlando, FL.
you switch? STEVE: I wouldn’t say I was ever much of a strapper, but I’ve always surfed alot, before I got into this whole wakeskate thing that’s all I ever did. Well that, and skateboard. FL WAKE: Who’s sponsoring you right now?
FL WAKE: How long have you been wakeskating?
STEVE: GATOR BOARDS, HELIUM, DBOT 5, and hopefully UGP soon.
STEVE: I have been wakeskating about four years, pretty much every single day.
FL WAKE: Do you prefer riding boat, pwc, or winch?
FL WAKE: Give me the rundown of the tricks you are working on or have recently landed. STEVE: I am working really hard on three flips and front big flips. It’s going ok, I’m almost there. I’m also working on three’s wake to wake. I am also always trying to get the tricks I already know down consistantly. FL WAKE: Who or what influences your riding? STEVE: Skateboarding does for sure. Watching people ride who have sick styles always influences me to ride better and try out new things. FL WAKE: Did you start out as a wakeboarder? and if so, what made
STEVE: Winching, definitely. With a winch that runs well - that’s my favorite. I ride at OWC alot nowadays as well - that place is so much fun when there’s nobody around to mess it up. FL WAKE: Who are you riding with mainly nowadays? STEVE: I ride with superstar Stephanie Wamsley, and also Russel B, Aaron Gore, and the whole 535 crew. Kyle Walton, Gabe Paulson, Zak Stone, and Reed Watson when they’re in town. Oh - and the ODUB crew, Chase G, Andrew P, John R, Dieter H. FL WAKE: What is the perfect day for you? STEVE: A day that I don’t have to work, and I can sleep the $%@* in.
}
Definitely ride a couple times, and drink sweet, sweet Jack Daniels into the night. FL WAKE: Nice. Ok - what would make a perfect year for you? STEVE: I think as far as wakeskating goes, 2007 was pretty good for me. I really couldn’t ask for much more. FL WAKE: If you could improve any aspect of your riding, what would you want to be a little bit better at? STEVE: I am working really hard at riding more behind my boat, and dialing my tricks as well learning crazy new ones. I am also riding a lot on my nobbies, I think bluntslides and presses look so sick, and I’ve been trying to get some new stuff cookin’ on the water. FL WAKE: Do you have any superstitions our routines before you ride? STEVE: I try to skateboard a little bit before I ride, sometimes trampoline skating is a good warm up. FL WAKE: What’s the gnarliest or sketchiest thing you have ever done on your wakeskate? STEVE: I was trying kickflip backlips onto a box, and getting worked. Finally got it, but it was only a 50\50. Don’t let wakekskating get the best of you. It can be evil, and it can suck some times, but then again, there’s always tomorrow. FL WAKE: You’ve got some great sponsors... If you could add an additional sponsor or sponsors, who would you really like to have?
just try buying a super expensive boat - try a jet ski to start off with, and then get a pass to OWC, and ride your heart away there.
STEVE: 7 Eleven, Ford, and AT&T, as well as any wakeboat company, Holla at me!
FL WAKE: What are you planning next as far as wakeskating is concerned?
FL WAKE: Outside of wakeskating, what else do you like to do?
STEVE: It’s winter now, and we are getting ready to do some boat show rail jams. These days we’re all pretty much getting ready for the upcoming tcontest season.
STEVE: I love to fish on my lake with my dogs, and skate my mini ramp. I also do a whole lot of relaxing... FL WAKE: Any advice for someone trying to get into wakeskating?
FL WAKE: This is for the music section of the magazine. Which 5 bands are you into right now and which albums?

ANDREW PASTURA
Andrew Pastura’s reputation definitely precedes him. At Surf Expo, the New Wakeskates crew immediately and urgently recommended that we do an interview with him. Curious, we asked around, speaking with some of the other pros in the wakeskate community. What we discovered is that everyone refers to him as the next big thing. Rumors abound that Andrew is not only good at every aspect of wakeskating, but that he rips at every aspect of the sport! When we finally saw him ride at the Blast contest, we were amazed, no matter how much we had already heard. What was even more amazing is that yet another kid with this much talent is flying under the radar of the wake mainstream.
PASTURA: Getting barrel. 12. Do you have any superstitions or routines before you ride? PASTURA: No. That’s weird. 13. Whats the gnarliest or sketchiest thing you have ever done on your wakeskate? BROWNIE POINTS BY JOSH KIRBY
THE SHUV-IT is the foundation trick in
almost any riders’ trick-ionary. A basic trick done by beginners and pros ,but one that holds vast potential for expansion and grandeur. Lets get started, the most common way to perform this trick and also considered the easiest way to learn to shuv-it is in the flats. It starts with cutting out on your heelside edge into the flats about 5-10 feet, then coming of your edge to flatten out. Once you have flattened out, wait two beats* and then the shuving begins. Use your back foot to press down on the tail to generate pop while also throwing it back to throw the board into rotation. Your front foot will be used to guide the board’s rotation and catch it once the 180˚ rotation has completed. Be sure to spot your landing while the board is in rotation and to catch the landing with your two spread apart, this will help you control the landing more easily. And thus, a shuv-it has been done. Btw, pop that sh*t.

1 COMMON MISTAKES INCLUDE • Leaning on you heel or toe edge when throwing the shuv (how you start the trick is how you will land on the trick) • Not spotting the landing, spread those feet. • Throwing it to far out the front or not enough in front of you. • Leaning over the board too much while throwing the trick.
