BROTHER KEVIN A. BASDEN, LM CHAPTER PRESIDENT
ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. IOTA EPSILON LAMBDA CHAPTER
On behalf of the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Iota Epsilon Lambda Chapter, I bring greetings. We are delighted to once again hold our Annual Honours Day Convocation, our 34th. This provides us the opportunity to not only recognize, but to also celebrate the achievements of the top graduating high school males in the country. For the second year in a row the program is virtual (hybrid). Covid19, the global pandemic, is a disruptor. The entire world had to make adjustments in order to function safely and in some instances in order to survive. You, our honourees, like all of us, did not anticipate having to deal with a Covid19 environment and for such a long time. More than a year has passed. In spite of it, you were able to keep up with your education, granted in an environment that was new to you, to your teachers and to the school system. You persevered. The theme for this year’s Honours Day is “Your Voice, Your Service, Your Future”. While we honour you for your academic achievements, be reminded that life is more than just academics. It is also about social responsibility and service. Use your voice and speak truth to power. Be an advocate for right and speak on behalf of those who are unable to. Serve your God and your community. Help someone along the way as you journey through life and be thankful to those who helped you to achieve all that you have. At the same time, prepare for the future and set achievable goals. Be the best that you can be. To the Parents, Guardians, Teachers, Guidance Counselors, Family and Friends who have supported and positively impacted the lives of our Honourees, I thank you for all that you have done. On behalf of the Men of Alpha Phi Alpha, I commend all of our Honourees and pray that they have great success as they enter the next phase of their lives either by attending university or seeking employment. Whichever road you take, know that learning is life long. God bless each and every one of you.
Kevin Basden President, Iota Epsilon Lambda Chapter

BROTHER ALGERNON M. CARGILL
CHAPTER VICE PRESIDENT AND DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. IOTA EPSILON LAMBDA CHAPTER
I am delighted to serve as Iota Epsilon Lambda’s newly elected Director of Educational Activities and by default, Chairman of the 2021 Honours Day Convocation. We have adopted the theme for our 2021 Program: Your Voice, Your Service, Your Future and have challenged our honourees to embrace this theme as a stepping stone in their planning for the next phase of their lives. We have no doubt that our honourees will shape the future of The Bahamas in their chosen careers and this is what makes our program, the only program that awards scholarships at this level, to outstanding students in The Bahamas. We recognize the parents and relatives of our 2021 honourees and particularly want to recognize them for the contributions made to the development of these future leaders. I can only imagine the gambit of sacrifices made to augment their development and together with their Principals, Guidance Counselors, and Teachers, thousands of man-hours have been injected into the development of these outstanding young men. Our Committee comprising members of the Iota Epsilon Lambda and Phi Mu Chapters have had a difficult task in determining the scholarship winners and on behalf of our Chapter, I thank every member of the Committee for their Service. It is fitting that I also recognize the hard work of our previous Directors of Education, and particularly, our Immediate Past Director, Dr. Steven A. Rolle LM, for his service and positive evolution of our Honours Day Convocation to the current level and he has left a very rich legacy of hard work, and commitment, for me, and by extension, the 2021 Committee to follow. I challenge my Brothers to use their Voice, and Service in following the aims of our Fraternity: Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for Mankind, as we continue to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. This is without question, an excellent way to leave our Future in the hands of outstanding young men, many of whom have participated in our Honours Day Program over the 34 years of consistent delivery by the Iota Epsilon Lambda Chapter of the greatest Fraternity in the world: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

History ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. IOTA EPSILON LAMBDA CHAPTER
Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African-American and people of colour around the world. Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity established for African-Americans and people of colour, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in the United States of America. The visionary founders, known as “Jewels” of the Fraternity, are: Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelly, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle and Vertner Woodson Tandy. The Fraternity initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially at Cornell. The Jewel founders and early leaders of the Fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha’s principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Alpha Phi Alpha chapters were established at other colleges and universities, many of them historically black institutions, soon after the founding at Cornell. The first Alumni Chapter was established in 1911. While continuing to stress academic excellence among its members, Alpha also recognized the need to help correct the educational, economic, political and social justices faced by African- Americans and men of colour. Alpha Phi Alpha has long stood at the forefront of the African-American community’s fight for civil rights through leaders such as: W. E. B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, and many others. True to its form as the “first of first”, Alpha Phi Alpha has been interracial since in 1945. The objectives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. are to stimulate the ambition of its members; to prepare them for greatest usefulness in the causes of humanity, freedom and dignity of the individuals; to encourage the highest and noblest form of manhood: and to aid down-trodden humanity in its efforts to achieve higher social, economic, and intellectual status. More than 175,000 men have joined the ranks of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. since it’s founding in 1906. The Fraternity is international in scope, with chapter in more than 700 colleges and communities throughout the world including: The United States, Bermuda, The Bahamas, The Caribbean, Europe and Asia. NATIONAL PROGRAMS - The Fraternity’s National Programs are community outreach mentoring initiatives that have been adopted by the organization’s governing body and mandated for implementation by all of its chapters. The organization’s National Programs include: GO-TO-HIGH SCHOOL, GO-TO-COLLEGE - The “Go-To-High School, Go-To-College” program, established in 1922, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Through the “Go-To-High School, Go- To-College” educational initiatives, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitates success. Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models to emulate. PROJECT ALPHA - Project Alpha is a collaborative effort between the March of Dimes Foundation and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This program was developed to increase the knowledge of male of the consequences of teenage pregnancy from the male perspective. This program seeks to assist young men in developing an understanding of their role in preventing untimely pregnancies through responsible attitudes and behaviors. A VOTELESS PEOPLE IS A HOPELESS PEOPLE - “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People” was initiated as a National Program of Alpha during the 1930’s when many African-Americans had the right to vote but were prevented from voting because of poll taxes, threats of reprisal, and lack of education about the voting process. Through this program, the Fraternity engages in a voter education and registration campaign. In the 1990’s the focus shifted to include political awareness and empowerment.

ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. IOTA EPSILON LAMBDA CHAPTER
REFLECTION DONOVAN BUTLER 2020 VALEDICTORIAN
I would like to begin by thanking the men of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for hosting their annual Honors Day, despite the unprecedented times we found ourselves in due to COVID-19. I believe that the event was truly a testament to the impetus that the fraternity places on education for young Bahamian men. It was truly a gratifying and fulfilling experience to be amongst the brightest young men that our country has to offer. I was extremely honored that I was chosen as the honors day valedictorian from amongst such a phenomenal group of young men. In addition to being amongst such a talented group, I also enjoyed the opportunity to speak with some of the men of the fraternity during the interview portion of the honors day. In fact, I believe that I became so engrossed in the conversations that stemmed from the questions asked, that the interview continued beyond the allotted time. It was truly a pleasure to discuss my aspirations and the important positions that I imagine many young Bahamian men taking on in the future. Furthermore, I am eternally grateful to the fraternity for the scholarship and laptop that I was awarded as a part of my prize as the honors day valedictorian. Again, even throughout what has been quite an economic downturn for our country, the men of Alpha Phi Alpha remained committed to making a financial contribution towards the education of young Bahamian men. I believe this speaks volumes about the men of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and how much they believe in investing in the young men that will carry this nation forward. On behalf of all of the young men that participated in the 2020 honors day, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who played a hand in making the Alpha Phi Alpha 2020 honors day a success. Transitioning to university in the midst of a global pandemic has been challenging, as one could imagine. From frantically trying to sort out my student visa status, to ensuring that I stayed safe for the duration of my journey, to taking practically all of my classes online for my entire year. It was definitely not what I had in mind for a freshman year, but nonetheless it was a year filled with learning and new experiences. At Rice, I have been challenged in ways that I have never been before, and I have been encouraged to extend my intellectual capabilities to new levels. Furthermore, I have had to learn to live with a stranger and immerse myself in an environment where I am in the vast minority. I found myself in classes of around fifty people, and I would be the only black male amongst the class. At times, this was discouraging, but as I pondered it further, I realized that it should be actually be motivating. It should be motivating me to continue working to show those that come behind me that anything that you set your mind to is possible. Many times, during this first year I have had to reappraise various situations and create a positive perception of things that appeared negative superficially. In spite of my efforts to do this, things weren’t always so easy. Initially, it was definitely a bit of a difficult adjustment. I found myself surrounded by a community of intellectually gifted students and at times I found it a tad overwhelming. However, after a while I was able to find a supportive community where I found reassurance, encouragement and support whenever I needed it. Despite not being able to attend classes in person and fully immerse myself in the learning experience, I believe that through various experiences and interactions, I have gained a wealth of knowledge during my freshman year. As I prepare to officially end my first year as a university student, I look back and wonder where the time as gone. It seems like just yesterday that I graduated from St. Augustine’s College, yet now I am one year closer to graduating from university. I have learned some important lessons thus far and I am eager to see what the future holds as I continue to forge my path. The past year has been quite a whirlwind, but I am elated that I was able to take part in such a wonderful program that served as boost of encouragement as I embarked on my college education journey.

2021 HONOURS DAY
REFLECTION
BRO. MICAH RUSSELL
2021 FLORIDA DISTRICT BELFORD V. LAWSON ORATORICAL CONTEST WINNER As I reflect on my past experience as a former Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., honouree, I am humbled and filled with a great sense of accomplishment to see how far I have come and everything that I have managed to achieve over the years. It seems as if it was just yesterday when I received the notice that I was selected to represent my High School, Huntley P Christie High (formerly North Andros High), as one of the top male students to participate in the Annual Alpha Phi Alpha Honours Day Convocation. I can recall quite well, coming to New Providence to represent my island Andros, and compete amongst the brightest and best male students in the country. It was exciting to say the least and an amazing feeling indeed, to know that amongst so many talented and outstanding male students across The Bahamas, I was selected as one of the top. I had no clue what to expect, but being a very competitive person by nature, I was determined to perform to my absolute best and do everything in my power to ensure that I stood out. I had highly anticipated the opportunity to meet and network with like-minded young men as myself, intelligent and scholarly male students that shared similar goals and ambitions as me. In fact, some of which I had the pleasure of bonding closely with and have created friendships that have lasted to this day. I had also look forward to meeting the men of the prestigious Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, who took it upon themselves and have worked diligently in organizing and successfully hosting this honours day event, not only to highlight young men like myself that have achieved great academic success, but also to encourage and motivate us to push forward. It truly spoke volumes and was meaningful to note that there are persons who still believe in and are willing to positively invest in the future of our young people, young men specifically. I was also grateful for the opportunity to learn more about fraternal and Greek life through meeting the men of Alpha Phi Alpha. I learned the significance of brotherhood and the importance of giving back to society. I had no idea what Greek life was prior to entering this competition and little that I know, these same prestigious and established men that inspired me, would become my fraternal brothers in the next few years. After graduating high school and gaining much motivation from participating in the honour’s day event, I went on to pursue my Bachelor of Science degree in Tourism Management at University of the Bahamas. Prior to graduating from high school, I had already made the University of the Bahamas my first choice. I wanted to receive quality tertiary education in the field that I had always been passionate about, Tourism and Travel. I thought, Tourism being the Bahamas’ number one industry, coming to the University of the Bahamas would afford me the best experience and opportunity. I came to the University of the Bahamas with the exact same mindset that I had always had, which was to continue to excel and achieve great academic success, and that I certainly did. I remained focus and committed to the goal I had set forth. I stayed on top of my studies and remained a consistent Dean’s List Scholar. My continued academic success afforded me the privilege of joining an Honour society at the University of the Bahamas, the National Society of Leadership and Success
141 4
in which I currently hold the award for National Engaged Leader. Despite all of the accomplishments I had achieved, I wanted more. I wanted to be a part of the prestigious men of Alpha that had so greatly inspired me and played a huge role in my successes. Moreover, I wanted to be a part of an organization, a group of young men that were passionate and committed about making a difference in society. I became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha during my senior year at the University and from then to now, my experience in the Fraternity has been more than rewarding. One of my greatest accomplishments to date was making history on February 20th, 2021, by becoming the first member from an international collegiate chapter to compete in the Belford V Lawson Oratorical Competition, and I made history again by winning. Belford Vance Lawson Jr. (July 9, 1901 – February 23, 1985) was an American attorney and civil rights activist who made at least eight appearances before the U.S. Supreme Court. He was the first African American to win a case before the Supreme Court and the first African American president of YMCA. He was a gifted orator, and has inspired me. The purpose of the Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Contest is to identify problems or special topics of interest within society and determine how the problem or topic relates to the goals and objectives of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. The Oratorical Contest provides College Brothers the opportunity to enhance and display their communication skills through oration. The contest fosters the development of leadership qualities as well as the ability to think intelligently and speak clearly. It also prepares the collegiate members for the acceptance of duties and responsibilities of entering the real world. Solid public speaking and written communication skills will be an integral part of an individual’s chosen career field, and I am blessed to have developed this skill. I competed against fellow collegiate brothers in the Florida District representing Florida State University, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Bethune Cookman University and Florida Gulf Coast University and I won the Florida District Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Contest. It was truly an honour to represent my chapter at the Florida District Level. My journey is not complete, I will be representing the Florida District to compete in the Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Contest against the winners from the States of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee at the 90th Southern Regional Convention, May 20-23, 2021 Mobile, Alabama. I am truly grateful for the many positive influences, and everyone that would have played a pivotal role in helping me achieve great success. I believe that for me, my journey has just begun.

2021 HONOURS DAY
SPEAKER
DR. LOGAN HAMPTON, Ph.D
PRESIDENT OF LANE COLLEGE, JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
President Basden, Chairman Cargill, Honours Convocation Progenitor Cooper, Brothers, Honourees and Guests, It is my high honour to join you in celebrating the academic achievements of the young men whom we acknowledge today. Your investment will pay dividends for generations to come. To the Honourees, this day has been a long time in the making. For seventeen or more years, you made your way to this celebration. For thirteen or more years, you attended classes, listened attentively, took notes, studied into the midnight hours, and took countless pop quizzes and tests. You walked many a hallways, joined clubs and organizations, played sports, made friends and impressed school leaders, advisers, counselors, coaches or teachers. This 34th Honours Day Convocation simultaneously marks the end of your secondary education and the beginning of your higher education academic journey. This Convocation is a ceremony that invokes thirty-fours of celebration by our Fraternity, centuries of tradition and connects you to our history of excellence. Like the Sankofa bird, this Convocation foreshadows your graduation from an institution of higher learning in a few short years that will “swiftly pass”. Our celebration today serves to encourage you, inspire you and affirm that you are uniquely “and wonderfully made, a marvelous.... work!” Please know, who you are and what you will make of your considerable talents, shall fulfill our hopes and dreams. We believe in you. We salute you. We are thankful for you. We pray for you. Go and do you! May your accomplishments exceed even your imagination.
Sincerely, Logan Hampton President, Lane College

AWARD Holland Garfield Smith was born on May 15, 1923 in Georgetown, Exuma. He was the third child and first born son of Ernest Smith (a master carpenter) and Caroline Cooper-Smith (a homemaker). It was in Exuma that his entrepreneurial skills were nurtured. His family owned a bread shop, provided laundry service during World War II to the British soldiers stationed there, farmed and invested in real estate. His father was among those Bahamian workers who helped build Flager Street in Miami, Florida. Holland was part of a large family which include Rosalie Dillett (retired school teacher and Bread Shop owner), Effie Sawyer (retired nursing sister) and Ambrose Smith (radio engineer). His deceased siblings are Harriet Rolle, Delores Sturrup, Sylvia Coakley and Sammy Smith. Holland’s early education was in the Government school in Exuma. He learned morse code from the soldiers stationed in Exuma. He obtained his secondary education by correspondence and tutoring and passed the Cambridge School Certificate in 1943. As a young man on Exuma he had two other friends who shared a goal to pursue excellence and acquire professional training. They were L. B. Johnson and Livingston Coakley. From 1943 to 1948 Holland was a teacher in the Bahamas Government School in Andros and New Providence. He then decided to pursue a degree at Virginia Union University in Richmond Virginia. This decision was made with the encouragement of his sisters and despite there being no financial assistance from the Government. He had to work his way through University. Fortunately Holland was not a stranger to work. He worked as an orderly in a hospital, a busboy and waiter at hotels, a construction and factory worker after classes and during the summer holidays. A fellow student at Virginia Union was the late Reverend Dr. O. A. Pratt (St. John’s Native Baptist Church – Meeting Street). While at Virginia Union University, he became a member of Gamma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. In 1952, he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. Holland then pursued post-graduate studies at Howard University in Washington, D.C. and Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. In 1955 he graduated from Michigan State University’s School of Civil Engineering in East Lansing, Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering. At one point during his professional training as an engineer, a professor remarked to Holland that he would never become an engineer. Perhaps his professor was unaccustomed to seeing a black person in engineering school. Holland was endowed with strong Bahamian pride and an unshakeable belief in himself. The professor’s opinion was just that an opinion not a fact. In
Lansing, Michigan, Holland worked for the Michigan State Highway Department as a trainee engineer. In Detroit, Michigan he worked as a draftsman, designer and junior engineer for two firms – Giffles & Vallet and L. Rosetti, Smith Hinchman & Grylls. In 1958, Holland returned home to Nassau, opened his consulting firm, H. G. Smith & Associates Ltd. – structural engineers. The firm became the authorized builder of Kirby Steel Building Systems. He had several apprentices – Alvan K. Rolle and the former governor of the central bank – James Smith. On February 9, 1962 he was among those distinguished men chosen as a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Nassau – the first Kiwanis Club in the Bahamas. He was a member of the Bahamas Society of Engineers & Architects and a representative of the Guild of Graduates – University of the West Indies Board of Governors. He was a director of the Chamber of Commerce of the Americas and a Director of the Caribbean Association of Industry & Commerce. In 1962 he and L. B. Johnson unsuccessfully contested the seat in Exuma for the PLP. He later ventured into other unsuccessful political parties – Commonwealth People’s Party and National Democratic Party. He rejoined the PLP in 1972 and served as a Fox Hill delegate to the Party’s convention. As a businessman, he was successful. He was an astute builder and land developer. He and Arnold Cargill developed the subdivision College Gardens of Prince Charles Drive. He was the structural engineer for the Treasury Building in Rawson Square and for the former Bahamas Teacher’s College (now C.C. Sweeting School)in Oakes Field to name a few. On May 17, 1972, Holland was elected the first Black President of the Chamber of Commerce. He was elected the following year but died a few months afterwards from injuries sustained in a car crash on August 8, 1973. He was survived by – Cynthia (now deceased), his wife Dolores Smith whom he married in 1953, Gary (free spirit), Renee Smith-Dearing (an electrical engineer), Judith (attorney) and Holland Kent (an electrical engineer). Holland lived his life to the fullest. He believed that each of us has time on the stage of life and it is our duty to give the maximum in achieving positive goals. He believed that a person must forge forward in spite of failure or obstacles, that when we depart this life we must leave behind a respected image and a good name. He died at 50 years old but lived it with energy and enthusiasm.
