Row who rose up the ranks so quickly that he and Gill were long listed for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. This was not to be, as unfortunately Saville Row sustained an injury in the final selection trial but Gill’s dream of representing her country on the International Level was born. In 1985 Gill married Greg Rolton. Greg has been alongside Gill all the way through her competition career and beyond and has been an outstanding sounding board and support for Gill in all her many equestrian endeavours and achievements. For the past 2 years he has devoted his life to supporting Gill in her courageous battle with cancer. With Benton’s Way Gill achieved her aim to ride in an International Event by competing as an individual at the 1986 World Three Day Event Championships at Gawler. She was long listed on “Ben” for Seoul in 1988 but again missed out due to injury, to herself this time, but did win the prestigious Australian Championships Advanced Class at Gawler that year. In 1987 Gill bought Peppermint Grove (Freddie) and quickly developed a partnership that proved to be unstoppable and by 1991 they had been chosen in the Australian Team to compete in the Trans-Tasman Event in New Zealand which was the start of their International career together, finishing as the highest placed Australian rider in the event. With that performance and subsequent good results back in Australia Gill and Freddie were long listed for Barcelona in 1992 but the deal was that they had to fund their own way to England for the lead up events. Hurriedly a group of friends organised a huge fundraising evening and enough was raised to get Gill and Freddie to UK. After a strong performance at Saumur in France and the final selection trial at Savernake in England, Gill was finally rewarded with a place on an Australian
Gill was elevated to the Status of Legend. She is the only female to hold this honour alongside Sir Donald Bradman AC, Bart Cummings AM, Barrie Robran From 2001 to 2007 Gill initiated, co-ordinated and coached the Mitsubishi National Young Rider Squad to support talented young Eventing Riders in their transition to senior level. She was honoured to be one of the Eventing Ground Jury Members at the London Olympic Games in 2012, followed by her appointment France in 2014. Gill was given the Key to the City of Adelaide. This is the highest honour a City Council can bestow upon an individual or organisation and the Adelaide City Council was absolutely thrilled to be able to bestow this great honour on Gill in her hospital bed. As a fitting tribute to Gill, Equestrian South Australia has named the Annual Youth Development Scholarships for all Disciplines the Gillian Rolton Youth Development Scholarships. Gill was very proud and honoured by this fitting tribute. She will be greatly missed.

an induction and governance framework which we will build on in 2018, completed our strategic plan for 2017-2020, built on our relationships with Recreation and Sport and other equestrian bodies with whom we can explore ways to promote our sport and increase our public profile. Some of the highlight events this year include State Dressage Championships, State Show Jumping Championships, Interschool Gymkhana, Show Horse of the Year, FEI Vaulting and many more equestrian activities run by Clubs, Affiliates and Agricultural Shows.
Joe Hooper, Board Chair, Equestrian South Australia
Merry Christmas to all our Members, As you read this you will be gearing up for the festive season chaos, with lots of presents to buy and family to organise. No doubt there will be children requests for those horse related items that every pony/ galloway/horse owner ‘needs’ to add to their ever growing collection. This year Equestrian SA has spent considerable time in tidying up our own back yard. We have cleaned up the financial management, brought some structure into our communication pathways, started
I attended the Equestrian Australia AGM and State Chairs meeting in November. Several matters were discussed including the use of a prefix in horse registrations, the number of qualifying events run in each state, commercial opportunities, membership categories and costs of membership. Increasing the value for members, animal welfare and safety of our riders at all events. All these are important and as a state interest we shall be prosecuting for what is best for all SA members. We have had the AGM and farewelled previous Chair Elizabeth Fricker and Board member Sarah Hocking and welcomed new Board member Peter Graham. We thank Elizabeth and Sarah for their time and energy contributed to the Board.
On behalf of the Board and members I want to congratulate our hard working state discipline committees and the many volunteers without whom these events and could not happen. In times when volunteering is becoming more and more challenging as we lead our busy lives, we need to be even more grateful to those who selflessly put aside days of their time to support members run their shows and give competitors the chance to enjoy their sport. If you know a volunteer, please make sure you say thank you next time you see them. Membership remains our priority. We clearly need to do more in this space not only engaging more often about the things our members want to hear from us but also providing more quality events that are financially acceptable and offer ‘value’ for those taking part. This is particularly important for our young riders entering or just growing in the sport and also for those parents who are looking at ways to reengage with the sport at a reasonable cost and not feel they need to compete at high level but just enjoy their horses and time with family. Both these groups need our attention and I would welcome any ideas from our members on how we can improve these areas. Next year promises to be an exciting time as the Board starts to look at some very promising opportunities which we have been working on this year and which I think will be well received by our members, so watch this space!
Sadly, we saw the passing of one of our local legends Gillian Rolton OAM who died following her battle with endometrial cancer. Gill was an inspiration to many of you and her achievements in Barcelona and particularly Atlanta will be remembered forever. Gill died during the Adelaide 3 Day Event, which she was responsible for bringing to Adelaide and which she had championed over many years, even continuing to manage this year’s event whilst in hospital. The state funeral held at Victoria Park was a moving farewell with the Premier Jay Weatherwill , Marjorie Jackson AO;MBE; Bruce McAvaney; John Coates and Gill’s husband Greg. The sight of Gills coffin being escorted by 6 police greys brought a tear to the crowd and was a most fitting farewell for an icon in the equestrian world. I also acknowledge Equestrian SA member, Belinda Lindh who willingly picked up the management when Gill was unable to continue and together they put on a top event. So as 2017 draws to a close and we start to look ahead, I hope that you will all find some time to reflect on your own achievements over the past year and take some time to enjoy the company of those you hold dear and maybe give your horse an extra piece of liquorice! Merry Christmas and compliments of the season to all.

Thanks must also go to Ricky MacMillan who has been the State Coach for the last two years, and we will be looking to appoint a new Senior State Coach in the near future. Well its that time of the year again where Dressage SA have had their general meeting and said farewell to some of its valued committee, and added some fresh faced highly motivated new members. Both Belinda Lindh and Collette Wheadon return as joint chairs for the next 12 months, with Catherine Skinner, Melinda Coleshill, Ruth Schneeberger, Naomi Mashford, Jo McEvoy, Samantha Dossett and new members Noella Angel and Robbie Buller making up the committee. Thanks must go to Carly Boon, Ty James and Kirsty Van Loon for their valued contribution over their respective terms, hopefully you will see them out and about on their horses a little more often now! The start of year is set to be especially busy so keep an eye on the Dressage SA Facebook page to stay up to date with it all. www.facebook.com/ DressageSouthAustralia/?ref=br_rs First event of the year is the 2017 Gillian Rolton Youth Development Programme to be held on Friday 12th & Saturday 13th of January at the Strathalbyn polo grounds. This great initiative offers a weekend of free coaching and development for the lucky ten selected finalists. We have a great interstate coach booked and it’s set to be a fantastic couple of days. We are also planning a Masterclass in the evening at Strathalbyn and this will be an opportunity not to be missed!
So watch this space, as the evening Masterclass event will be open to all EA Members! More details to be released shortly via the Equestrian SA website and Facebook! The South Australian Young Horse and Pony Final will be held 3 February at McLaren Park. This year, for the first time, along with the 4, 5 and 6 year old horse and pony classes, a 7 year old young horse class has also been added. This year we have an interstate judge attending, but only one round will be eligible for use as a qualifier for DWTS national YH competition. Further information on rules and tests can be found at www.equestrian.org.au/dressage-YH. We have a confirmed date for the South Australian State Dressage Championships 28th and 29th of April - at Mount Crawford Dressage Club. There are some exciting things on the horizon for this event, and the motivated Sub-committee are full steam ahead. Just a reminder that late entries or entries without qualifications cannot be accepted, so please ensure that you are finalising plans now for prior to the closing date. Stay tuned to the Dressage SA Facebook and Equestrian SA webpages for further announcements and schedules. We are coming to the end of this year, and so we will be looking for new applications for all the Senior and Youth Squads soon. We’ve had a great year with our squad riders, and congratulations must go to Ruth Schneeberger, Julia Weir and Cooper Oborn
The Senior Squads are the same as this year with the FEI, Advanced & Progression Squads. Applications are now available here: www.sa.equestrian.org.au/content/ dressage-state-squads-information-2018
There are exciting things on the horizon for the Youth Squad, with a completely revamped new program soon to be released. The program will enable Youth dressage riders of all ages to access a number of new initiatives for this group. 2017 has been a very progressive year for the committee and for dressage in South Australia, and thanks must go to all the clubs, volunteers, officials, judges and riders who have made a contribution.

On November 19th 2017, the Equestrian SA Carriage Driving Committee and Angas Harness Driving Club, held two Carriage Driving Events, in conjunction with the Mitsubishi Aus3DE at the Victoria Parklands. In the morning a Dressage and Cones competition, followed by an afternoon Combined Marathon competition. At this very successful day there were eleven combination competing, including Ponies, Multiples and Horses. These included Junior Drivers as well the Senior Open Drivers, and successful in their classes were, Anne Lindh, Jackie Boyd, Kim Norris, Rhys Vaudin and Morgan Lindh This year we were excited to have ridden dressage judges officiate, Wendy Hunt and Elizabeth Duncan judging the Dressage competition, and Prue Cropping (also a showjumping judge) judging Cones and Combined Marathon.
The committee thank these judges, and for also attending a Driven Dressage day prior to this competition. All also, had a drive of a carriage horse, and enjoyed it immensely.
We note with deep sadness the passing of our own SA Eventing Legend, Gillian Rolton OAM), on Saturday November 18th after a two year battle with endometrial cancer.
Unfortunately, FEI Level 2, course designer
Gill was a legend in the Bill Roycroft mould for her heroic ride, despite a significant injury, at the Atlanta Olympics 1996, and last year was elevated to the status of Legend in the SA Sport Hall of Fame alongside Sir Donald Bradman, Bart Cummings, Barrie Robran and Victor Richardson. Amongst all her sporting and administrative achievements and accolades, Grand Jury Member at the London Olympics and Normandy WEG, - nothing was more important to Gill than the Aus3DE, Internationally recognised as the best 3DE in the world for 2016, and established as a premier 4* event in the FEI Classics Series under Gill’s ten year tenure as Event Director.
Peter Harkness from Victoria, was unable to attend because of illness; however, the committee used his challenging Cones and Combined Marathon courses. Drivers said that the course drove well, but they “had to think”. This year we were fortunate to receive sponsorship from many companies, and all combinations went away from the competition with prizes, including horse feed and wines. On the Friday night of the Mitsubishi Aus3DE, the organisers held a competition for carriage drivers, show jumpers and celebrities, which proved to be a great success, in a Celebrity Jump and Drive. This competition commences with a young show jump rider negotiating a show jump course, then “ hi-fiving “ a celebrity, who then had to run to jump on to the back of the carriage and assist with the combination negotiating a cones course. This was very well received by the many spectators, with much cheering and acknowledgement of the skill of riders and drivers, and barracking for their favourites.
As a fitting tribute to Gill, Equestrian South Australia has named the Annual Youth Development Scholarship for all Disciplines the “Gillian Rolton Youth Development Scholarships” - another accolade in recognition of Gill’s role in the coaching and mentoring of Juniors and Young Riders. Gill has been awarded the honour of a State Funeral by the Government of South Australia, for her services to sport in SA and Internationally. Gill will be greatly missed by the wider Equestrian community.
Australian International 3 Day Event – November 16 – 19, 2017 CCI4* was won by NZ rider, Clarke Johnstone & his Rio Olympic mount, Balmoral Sensation but he needed a double clear show jump to defeat SA’s Megan Jones & Kirby Park Impress who had applied full pressure with her double clear round only 3.7 points behind Clarke to finish a close second. Stuart Tinney & War Hawk dropped two rails but moved up to 3rd placing. A great deal of controversy was created during cross country, caused by the new 50 penalty rule and its interpretation by the Ground Jury – literally according to the rule as written, rather than in the intention of cross country (where it is assumed that a jumping effort must be made to be “clear” rather than the apparent run out that nevertheless did manage to “pass the head, neck & shoulders” over the jump as it knocked out the flag). Stuart fell into this category having his 50 penalties awarded by the jump judge at 20b removed by the Grand Jury, similarly so for NZ rider & Star Nouveau, but last year’s winner, Hazel Shannon & Clifford did not win her appeal on a 50 awarded at 6c. Megan Jones & KP Impress were initially marked clear, but later awarded 50 penalties at 26b and had to wait on an appeal decision the next morning to regain her 2nd placing. The
rule as written appears to have lost sight of the primary XC requirement that the horse should have made “a significant jumping effort”..... “Whether Stuart’s horse actually jumped the fence is not the critical question in this case.” “Notice that the rule does not even state horses need to jump the fence to be considered clear, horses only need to “pass between the extremities of the element or obstacle as flagged.” The rule clearly needs revision & clarification after the controversies at Adelaide. To put all this into perspective, we were all saddened to be told the news at the end of cross country that our Event Director, Gill Rolton, had passed away that afternoon. Rumour has it that Gill hung on until the last horse in 4* had completed its cross country round safely. The job she worked on with such passion, over the last ten years, to produce an even bigger better 4* 3DE in the Southern Hemisphere, the Aus3DE at Adelaide in particular, was done. Megan’s second placing was the only 4* SA result when Wendy Schaeffer’s Sun Showers was withdrawn at First Vet Inspection – her accident prone mare had somehow fractured its front leg splint bone in its box that afternoon !!! CIC 3* - Megan and Kirby Park Invader show jumped in 5th place after XC, but an uncharacteristic 20 penalties dropped them to 8th. The only other SA rider, Jaimie Stichel & Image Blue Ice, completed in 11th place after a competitive dressage and show jumping, but an unexpected run out at fence 20 in XC. Both of these are headed for the CCI 3* at Wallaby Hill, NSW, December 1 – 3.
SUMMER 2017 | From the Horses Mouth | 15
CCI 2* also had only one SA rider qualify, Sarah Clark on her own LV Balou Jeanz who exceeded expectations in finishing 6th at his first 3DE, (promising much for his future) and Sarah riding Emily Daley’s Aremdale Donn Piatt who moved up the order from a lower dressage score to finish a credible 11th. Of 38 CCI 2* starters there were 20 finishers and 18 who failed to complete. Clearly Mike Etherington Smith’s XC courses were more technically demanding this year at all 3 levels.

A great deal of action was held, all on the one day, Sunday 5th November, which in its inaugural year caused a few time scale issues with multiple rides, however all horses did get to cross country and the event ran very smoothly. We wish our newest event every success in the future as they aim to build up to star class level. EVA 80 was a hotly contested class with Sarah Clark & Cassage S winning by 0.2 from Kelly Roberts & Charlatan with Jeanine Joubert & The Golden Rule 0.9 away in third. EVA 65 was won by Ella Oszczypok & History from Sarah Wyatt & AP Whisperette and Emma Crowder & Finnegan,

Reynella Horse Trials October 20 & 21 Cross country had a different look this year with new Course Designer, Mick Pineo, setting out a changed track going more around the hills than directly up & down, however due to time constraints perhaps, there were significantly fewer jumping efforts required at all levels. On the positive side this was just the nice pre Adelaide run required for horses going to Adelaide and Megan Jones was particularly happy with Kirby Park Impress going double clear XC and SJ even though HC. Megan won the CNC 2.5* on KP Invader from Rebecca McCrae on Hi Tide. CNC 2* was won by Sarah Clark & LV Balou Jeanz looking comfortable in her upgrade to 2*, from Emily Daley & Aremdale Donn Piatt, however Emily then decided to relinquish the ride at Adelaide to Sarah. Stephen Bow & Va Va Voom was third, but a run out XC disappointingly meant that he had not qualified for Adelaide CCI 2*. CNC 1* was won by Wendy Schaeffer & Canterbury Sun Rose, (having taken over the ride from Rachelle Verma during her 3 month visit from UK). Kate Hayman & Rockingham Second Guess came in 2nd from the dressage leader, Hannah Hardy & City of the Moon. EVA 105 was won by Courtney Munro & Aylestone Park Apple Blossom adding to her many wins this year, from Rebecca McCrae & Ocean Drive and Chloe Hittman & Tommy Fraar. EVA 95 saw a battle between two young rising horse stars, both from the Danson stables of Heather Currie, in Danson Gamestar & Jade Kluske who won by 0.4 from New World Rolls Royce & Jaimie Stichel with Christina Grear & Roger That in third.
EVA 80 div 1 was won by Sarah Clark & Cassage S, another stunning young horse bred by Finch Farm, Qld. and beautifully prepared from a youngster by Sarah. Leanne Hayward & Kalimna Taylor Made came 2nd from Shauna Anderson & Archers Target. EVA 80 div 2 was another win to a Danson horse, Danson Don Fiesta & Jaimie Stichel, from Leena Blows & Crackerjack with Grace Neuhaus riding Carly Digney’s Tuxedo Cat in third. EVA 65 was won by Lexi Kinlough & Pagan Magic from Matthew Flood & Omni Power with Taya Archer & Made Ya Look in third.
Interstate Results Lynton Horse Trials, Goulburn CIC October 14 – 15. Megan Jones, Wendy Schaeffer and Rachelle Verma were the only SA riders to make the trek to Goulburn, seeking CIC qualifications and serious interstate competition in the lead up to Adelaide. Megan & KP Impress was second after dressage in CIC 3* but withdrew before XC after having a couple of rails and feeling the mare was not quite right. Wendy & Sun Showers were below best in dressage but did have a solid XC workout to finish 12th of 36 competitors. Megan & KP Invader finished 5th in CIC 2* while Wendy & Canterbury Sun Rose finished 2nd in CIC 1* and Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun equivalent of 23rd but in CNC 1* due to a paperwork mixup !
Eventing Victoria Spring HT CIC September 30 – Oct 1st. A group of SA riders travelled interstate for a qualifying CIC at Werribee with Steph Hann & True Celebre being the highest placed rider in CIC 1* in 7th, Wendy Schaeffer & Canterbury Sun Rose in 12th, Emily Daley & Aremdale Donn Piatt in 30th, Bec Martin & Jaybee Amigo in 31st and Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun 36th in a large 1* field of 44 competitors. CIC 2* Sarah Clark & LV Balou Jeanz had a most successful upgrade to their first CIC 2* placing 5th.. Luke Jones & Proclaimer placed 15th, but later discovered a recurrence of a previous condition that unfortunately put them out of a start at Adelaide, while Stephen Bow & Va Va Voom placed 19 but again no qualification with one run out. CIC 3* Wendy Schaeffer & Sun Showers, recently reunited for a crack at Aus3de 4*, had a pleasing dressage PB on 50.6 in 4th, double clear SJ but 9 time faults to finish 6th. Image Blue Ice finished 18th. Danni Hampton finished 13th in EVA 105 div B

Monarto Horse Trials September 2 – 3. After the disappointment of an August postponement due to weather, Monarto was rescheduled to September and its small committee did a good job to get it back on the calendar. EVA 105 was won by Connie Miller & Don Roccardo from Jen Thompson & Dark Assassin with Charlie Germein & Garman GZ in third.

EVA 95 Jaimie Stichel & New World Rolls Royce took the win from Fiona Heysen & Kalinga Nora with Jade Kluske & Ledayl Delago third. EVA 80 saw Annie Smart & Youllnevawalkalone (what a name!) 2 points ahead of Sarah Clark and youngster, Cassage S with Rachelle Verma & Giselle astounding all in her first start 0.3 away in third. EVA 65 was won by Meredith Turner & Hes A Pearler, while EVA 50 was won by Eloise Entraigues & Orange is the New Black
Mount Gambier Horse Trials August 19 – 20. This early event with excellent going attracts many riders from both sides of the border making for solid interstate competition with larger than average fields.

CNC 2* was won convincingly by Megan Jones & KP Impress from a group of Victorians.
CNC 1* was won by Victorians Rebekah Italiano & ESB Irish Patiemce from Edith Kane & Valenthyme with Rachelle Verma & Koyuna Dark Sun 3rd in his first 1*. EVA 105 was won convincingly by Bec Martin & Jaybee Amigo on their dressage score from a long list of Victorians. EVA 95 won by Kerrie Spiers & Spierwood Millington from another long list of Victorians. EVA 80 Megan Jones placed 3rd & 4th while Ella Oszczypok & History were 2nd in EVA 65. News from Wendy Schaeffer in the UK. In August 11 - 13th at Hartpury College CCI 1* her young 6 yo Numerano GT Z (by SJ stallion Numero Uno) placed 7th in his first 3DE. A minor 4 seconds over time for 1.6 penalties was the difference between 2nd and 7th in the highly competitive UK with 71 starters in this CCI 1* !. Squad Clinics were held for squad riders on a first come basis (unfortunately as yet unfunded by any High Performance money) with any unfilled places being offered to all. Prue Barrett (ex Australian HP Director) held dressage and jumping clinics 12 & 13 August and also 7 & 8 October. Jamie Coman conducted two show jumping clinics leading up to Aus3de on 26 & 27 September and also 31 & 1 November. Di Schaeffer - for Eventing SA Committee

National Interschool Championships It was such an honour for our small team to represent South Australia at the Marcus Oldham 2017 National Interschool Championships in Toowoomba. Twenty-five riders made the long trip to Queensland, with ten team members electing to ride pool horses. Although the ground was a little hard and dusty and the weather a little unkind due to the drought being experienced in Queensland, the event ran well and the competitors had a fantastic time. Team SA looked bright and professional as they donned the new red and white
uniform in conjunction with their horses and ponies smart looking Horseware show rugs that Megan Jones kindly arranged. As always, the team bonded really well and were supportive of each other throughout the whole event. We were delighted and privileged to have Megan Jones as Coach and her husband James Deacon as Team Manager. We had numerous top six placings across all disciplines and Megan was very proud to announce that this year’s team was the strongest since South Australia joined the competition with the top ten placings.

Since our last Horse’s Mouth write up, we can report on some of our jumping rider achievements in addition to those already celebrated through our facebook posts: Our SA jumping riders put in some great performances over the course of the Adelaide Royal Show with many featuring in the placings. Short of listing everyone’s successes, our congratulations go to Sarah Wigney on winning the National Young Rider Selection Series event and to Kristy Bruhn for winning the Leading SA Jumping Rider award.

Jumping SA End of Year Wrap Up We are pleased to announce our new Jumping SA Committee after our recent General Meeting. Welcome Clive Reed (Chair), Amie McMaugh (vice Chair), Tracy Dewhurst (Secretary), Tessa Fairweather (Treasurer), Lizzie Wigney (Squad Coordinator), Diana Gibbs Ludbrook (Interschool Liaison), Jono Farrington (Riders Rep), Andrew Paech, Bridget Dunn and Jackie Behsmann-Seiboth. This group of dedicated people have either been elected for a two-year term or through filling short-term vacancies and we genuinely value their commitment to help govern our sport in South Australia. For anyone interested there are still two temporary vacancies to be filled and we would welcome anyone who is keen to be involved and contribute to the administration of Jumping in South Australia.
We thank Leanne Bruggemann for stepping in as one of our State Jumping Selectors until the end of 2017, particularly under heartrending circumstances. We look forward to announcing our new Selectors for the 2018-2019 period as soon as the application process has been completed. We can report the Silo Café Amateur Series is well underway for 2017/2018 and we are pleased to announce the new Horseland Adelaide Young Rider Series for 2018. The Horseland Young Rider Series will run concurrently through a combination of our 2018 Novice and Platinum League events. We thank both of these amazing sponsors for their support.
The 2017 Australian Jumping Championships was once again a fantastic event and although only a small group of SA jumping riders made the trip to Werribee this year, we certainly showed we can to “mix it” with the best of them. We only had three junior riders to field our one and only team this year and as such, our new State saddle blankets made their first appearance to the envy of all other States. Sarah Wigney, Conor Reed and Esperance Fyfe made up our Junior team and put in their best efforts to finish outside of the team placings. Having no drop-off score was a disadvantage but Conor and Sarah both jumped exceptional rounds over the two individual qualifying events to put them in the top thirty riders for the Junior Final on the Championship Day. Congratulations to Conor for finishing in 6th place overall and to Sarah for finishing 16th in a field of 90 of the best young riders in Australia. We also congratulate Kristy Bruhn who finished 3rd in the Australian Speed Championships title. Without mentioning all the other individual results, we can report all of them were in the placings in a range of hotly contested events, confirming our small State (in terms of numbers) can compete with the best of the best nationally.

Showjumping continues to get stronger at the Adelaide International 3DE with the inclusion of a Future Stars class added as an evening feature event in addition to the World Cup. Both events attracted riders from all over Australia, with 22 horses in the Future Stars and 17 in the World Cup. Congratulations to Nicole Bruggemann for placing 2nd on White Wash in the Future Stars One Round warm up class on the Friday night and to Conor Reed on Clasique Dorien for jumping two clear rounds to finish 6th in the Future Stars Event on Saturday. This is an amazing venue and we thank Tessa Fairweather for all of her hard work in organising the Jumping program and of course, special thanks to the Horse Trials management group for allowing Jumping to be featured at this prestigious International event. It is timely to share with you that none of this would be possible without the vision of the late Gillian Rolton who sought to have jumping showcased through this magnificent event. We are pleased to report the SA Sports Show (channel 44) continues to promote our sport with our latest interviewee Mark Lindh airing on the final show for 2017. Thank you to Clive Reed, Conor Reed, Nicole Bruggemann, Sarah Wigney, Amie McMaugh and Jasmin Dawe for giving their time to be part of the program throughout 2017. This has been an exciting and innovative media opportunity to inform the general public of Adelaide and SA what our sport is all about and through our loyal supporter Ros Bent, we hope to continue in 2018.

a South Australian State Jumping Selector right up until his passing. Richard was a well renowned FEI Course Designer who had built courses for some of our most prestigious jumping events in Australia. Richard spent all of his life in the sport and was a formidable Grand Prix rider himself. We are blessed to have his wife Leanne and daughter Nicole actively involved in our sport of Jumping to continue the family tradition. We also mourn the passing of Rob Goldsworthy at the age of 83. Rob was an ESA Life Member, had served as Chairman on the Board and chaired the Jumping discipline committee. In his earlier years Rob was an all-round horseman, competing in Grand Prix Jumping and Dressage, won Champion Hack classes and later had success in Carriage Driving. When he finished riding he too concentrated on FEI Course Designing. Rob’s legacy to our sport can be seen through the wonderful jumping equipment we currently have as he was influential in raising funds to secure this asset we all get to use today. Our thoughts will be with the families of these amazing people during Christmas time. Happy New Year from Jumping SA
Martin Plewa – Back & Paces – what’s the connection? The Dressage Judges Sub committee and the SA Coaching Committee worked together to provide an evening workshop and world-renowned expert Martin Plewa to South Australia. Martin worked with riders to demonstrate key points and how they translated to the horses movement and paces. Attendees benefited from Martins expertise and experience in a high quality learning atmosphere, with the added benefit of watching the changes with horse and rider in front of them and we look forward to more of these events in the coming year.

VALE - Gavin Ramsey Equestrian South Australia extends condolences to the family of Gavin Ramsey, who passed away suddenly at home. Gavin was a member of the South Australian Police Force Mounted Cadre for 7 years. Gavin was also a lecturer with the University of Adelaide and at Roseworthy. Gavin was both a competitive and successful eventing rider through 1981 – 1995, and a member of the State Eventing team periodically through this period, long listed for the World Championships 1986. Gavin competed in numerous 3 day events including Gawler (SA, Worrigee (NSW), Koralbyn (Qld) and Werribee (Vic). In 1986, Gavin achieved his Coach Educator qualifications as well as being a Level 2 NCAS Eventing and General Coach.
Finally, we mourn the passing of two of Jumping’s remarkable ambassadors and we pay tribute to each of them for their years of contribution and commitment to our sport, which has not gone unnoticed. We mourn the loss of Richard Bruggemann who was taken way too early. He served as

Jamie Hocking competes at FEI World Cup Vaulting South Australian, Jamie Hocking achieved what no other Australian has at the Salon du Cheval de Paris at the weekend. As the first Australian ever to compete at an FEI World Cup Vaulting event, he placed third against some of the world’s best. Jamie finished on a score of 7.277 on the horse French Kiss. The result exceeded his expectations. “To be honest, I’d didn’t really know what to expect before coming to the World Cup. My goal was simple, I had no thoughts of a podium place. I just wanted to go into the competition and try my best. I had no expectations of placing anywhere in the top three and was just grateful to have been invited,” Jamie said.
“The crowds were huge, noisy and enthusiastic and French Kiss and I were both nervous on the first day. As soon as I jumped up onto French Kiss in the ring we both remembered the routine, and apart from the fall in the first round, I was proud that I vaulted softly and helped French Kiss to do her job too.” “The following day we went out knowing more about what to expect. I performed all the high risk moves I couldn’t try during the first round and it turned into a performance I was proud to present. I had to pinch myself when I found out we were going to win bronze and some prize money.” The next challenge for Jamie and French Kiss will be the next World Cup Series event in Offenburg at the beginning of February 2018.
