“A John Waters Christmas” Thursday, December 10 at 7:30 pm $40/$32 save “Waters, who claims to have an unironic love of Christmas… delivered his comments in a wonderfully dry and arch deadpan. His timing and tone were pitch-perfect.” —Variety Like a wayward Santa for the Christmas-obsessed, legendary filmmaker and raconteur John Waters (Pink Flamingos, Hairspray, Female Trouble) rides into town this December spreading yuletide cheer with his critically acclaimed one-man show. Waters’ rapid-fire monologue explores and explodes traditional archetypes as he shares his compulsive desire to give and receive bizarre gifts, a religious fanaticism for Santa Claus, and an unhealthy love of true-crime holiday horror stories. “The Pope of Trash” gives you a Joyeux Noël like no other.

“The beauty of Birdhouse lies in the generosity with which the acts are layered upon each other and the superb integration of circus skills with music, light, and choreography. And the glory is in the excellence of the performers.” —San Francisco Chronicle Cirque Mechanics is an extraordinary troupe of Cirque du Soleil, Pickle Family Circus, and Moscow Circus veterans who transform the mundane into the magnificent. The setting is a factory, where the workers are acrobats and the machines are circus props. theater From the UK’s news from nowhere

“England”

“Created with rigorous, poetic economy… England belongs to that wonderful genre of thoughtful plays that could be discussed for hours without exhausting its ideas.” —New York Times The underground British hit at New York’s Under the Radar Festival, England is a site-specific performance that takes place at UVM’s Fleming Museum. The performance travels the trade routes of art and human beings on a tour through spaces and across borders; England is about an empire of a different kind. It’s the story of one thing placed inside another: a heart inside another person’s body, a culture inside another country’s culture, theater inside a gallery, a character inside an actor, a play inside its audience. Written and performed by Tim Crouch and Hannah Ringham, England is “absolutely fascinating and draws the audience into its stories even when they aren’t always entirely sure where they are being taken” (British Theatre Guide).

“Visual poetry. Poetic, bathetic, punning, and perverse… a rough jumble of wonderment.” —New York Times In these two original theater pieces based on World War II and the Holocaust, Double Edge Theatre performs their visionary brand of dramatic expression. The Disappearance honors Holocaust survivor Maarten Soetendrop, a Belgian actor in post-war Europe whose psychological unravelling and mysterious kidnapping awaken his community to lingering post-war anti-Semitism. A haunting work with a stunning set, this show features a play-within-a-play version of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice. Republic of Dreams, conceived and directed by Artistic Director Stacy Klein, explores the writings, art, and life of Polish-Jewish artist Bruno Schulz, culminating in his senseless death at the hands of a jealous Nazi. It is performed in Double Edge’s signature style, incorporating text, movement, large props, puppets, and surreal changes of scene. Media Support from Seven

“Serenade/The Proposition”

Tuesday, January 26 at 7:30 pm $45/$35 save

“The mad and marvelous troupe has all the mesmeric power of a magic show.” —The Globe and Mail

“The supremely distinguished choreography of Bill T. Jones leaves you with indelible, graceful images of young people scarcely bound by gravity.” —Wall Street Journal

This world-renowned company of uncannily athletic dancers presents figments of the imagination of choreographer/director Moses Pendleton that are unpredictable, sometimes bizarre, and notoriously out of this world. Since the early ‘80s, audiences have watched the native Vermonter transform the dancers in MOMIX into sidewinders and Gila monsters, float them weightlessly through extraterrestrial terrains, strap them into snow skis, and hurl them through the air like baseballs. MOMIX: REMIX features the most striking images from over 25 years of work.

Serenade/The Proposition is a lively, colorful rumination on the nature of history that commemorates the 2009 bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Video projections by Janet Wong fill an iconic set of movable columns that evoke the architecture of history: the White House, the Parthenon, or the ballroom of an elegant plantation parlor. A cast of fierce, beautiful dancers perform flowing movement that assembles into moments of portrait-like postcards from the past. The original score, performed live, draws from Mozart’s Requiem, Battle Hymn of the Republic, and Dixie to create a contemporary, playful musical collage for cello, piano, and soprano.

Bridgewater delves into the broad-ranging repertoire she explored during Stephen Stahl’s Lady Day, her Laurence Olivier-nominated theatrical portrayal of the legendary singer. Bridgewater conveys Holiday’s unique vocals and influential style—the way she manipulated phrasing and tempo, and was strongly inspired by jazz instrumentalists. Holiday’s jazz standards, sung impeccably by Bridgewater, include God Bless the Child, Don't Explain, Lady Sings the Blues, and the blazing anthem Strange Fruit.

“An icon of Afro-Peruvian culture and tradition.” —Jazz Times

Sunday, April 18 at 7 pm $38/$28 save

Eva Ayllón has been called “the Tina Turner of Afro-Peruvian music, energetic and playful, sexy and fully charged” (Los Angeles Times). Her repertoire ranges from the romantic Spanish songs known as valses, to the distinctive rhythms brought by African slaves—the sensual lando, the throbbing festejo, and the bawdy, insouciant alcatraz. Ayllón’s performance is accompanied by an eight-member band featuring outstanding young soloists and a powerhouse rhythm section, all masters of the authentic Peruvian cajón.

“Rokia Traoré will sing for those lucky enough to gain entry into paradise.” —Daily Mail and Guardian (Johannesburg) Rokia Traoré is perhaps the most adventurous singer-songwriter in Africa today, forging a fresh new direction by combining blues and rock with the traditional music of Malian griottes. Although she sings in the Malian language of Bambara, her modern sound—driven by her Gretsch electric guitar—distinguishes her from traditional Malian singers. With a striking voice and sparse arrangements that highlight African instruments like the balafon, n’goni, and kora as well as electric guitar and bass, her performances are as mesmerizing as the delicate rhythms of her albums. Traoré “has joined an elite club of superstars” (Toronto Sun ).

• We do not accept fax orders due to the possibility of lost or unreadable information.

Children attending any performance must have a ticket and a separate seat. Infants (up to one year of age) will be admitted to family matinee performances only, at no charge. A $4 discount is offered on tickets for children 17 and younger. As a courtesy to audience members and performers, please use discretion regarding a young child’s ability to sit quietly and enjoy a performance.

• There is a $2.50 per ticket postage and handling fee on all orders, with a maximum $20 fee per order.

Students with valid ID cards also receive a $4 discount.

Flynn Members • Indicate “Member” on the outside of your mailing envelope and use the pre-printed label on your order form for member-priority ordering. • Member orders will be filled in the order of postmark (mail) or “date received” stamp (web or window) beginning Thursday, July 23. Orders received before July 23 will be processed with those received on July 23. Orders received on a specific date will be randomized within that date and then fulfilled. • Members ordering online during the member-only period (July 23 through August 12) will not receive specific seats during the online ordering process, but can request seating preferences. This is to ensure fairness for all methods of submission during a peak processing period. Orders will be manually processed by box office staff.

General Public • Ticket orders received before Thursday, August 13 will be processed with those received on August 13. • Beginning August 13, members and the general public who place their order online will be assigned seats online.

• Starting Thursday, September 4, order tickets by phone or at the FlynnTix Regional Box Office for up to four events (only member discounts apply). For tickets to five or more events, please submit an order form at the FlynnTix Regional Box office window or via the mail or web to receive subscription discounts. • After the subscription period ends on Wednesday, September 16, third-tier tickets and group discounts are available for most events in the Flynn 2009-10 Season. Third-tier tickets will be offered for seats in the last rows of the orchestra section on a first-come, first-served basis. Groups of 15 or more receive a 15% discount on tickets in the top two ticket tiers. For more information call 802-863-5966.

Flynn patrons may park in the Corporate Plaza Parking Garage on St. Paul Street for the special rate of $3 beginning at 6 pm on the night of a show (no charge on Sunday). There is ample parking there. Simply show your ticket to the parking garage attendent, and pay as you enter. Night of show parking is also available at Courthouse Plaza on S. Winooski Avenue. Please note, we no longer staff the TD Banknorth parking lot and cars may be towed from certain areas that are dedicated to apartment tenants. Please visit www.flynncenter.org/thearea.html for more information.

Please Be Considerate We want everyone to enjoy the performances at the Flynn Center. Recording any performance by camera, audio, or video recording equipment is prohibited. Use of cell phones, BlackBerrys, and other portable electronic equipment is also prohibited. And don’t forget to turn off your cell phone! Also, please refrain from wearing perfumes as other patrons may be scent sensitive.

Exchanges Ticket exchanges are a special benefit for customers who purchase tickets to five or more shows by Wednesday, September 16. You may exchange these tickets for any other Flynn-presented performance, based on availability, subject to a charge for higher priced tickets. Please note that we will only honor exchange requests made by the ticket purchaser on record. Exchanges may be made in person or by mail as long as tickets are received at the Flynn three business days prior to the show date, allowing time for their resale. A $2 charge applies per ticket exchanged. No refunds are issued, but you may donate unused tickets to the Flynn prior to the event.

STAGE
