LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Brand-New Day new beginnings—that’s what resolutions are, after all. And in the case of the islands, where 2018 brought severe challenge, this new year promises a fresh new start with upgraded facilities and, in some cases, brandnew buildings and the chance to truly begin anew. WITH A NEW YEAR COME
Our cover story featuring Belmond’s Cap Juluca hotel on Anguilla showcases what revamped luxury looks like in 2019. Despite being shuttered prior to Hurricane Irma’s devastation, the property underwent a complete overhaul—from top to bottom—to breathe new life and vigor back into a storied property. The result is a brand-new look for the resort, conceived by New York-based design team Rottet Design and overseen by Belmond’s in-house design group, focusing on barefoot luxury with casualness and understatement at the forefront. Of course, this doesn’t preclude high-end fabrics, custom furnishings and handmade tiles adorning the resort’s Greco-Moorish architecture, but the focus is truly on
how all of that feels underfoot, underhand or under-head, rather than how it looks. This shift in the luxury world from gloss for visual to quality for comfort is one that can appeal to all of us who are desperately seeking to reconnect with the tangential. Put the phone down and luxuriate in the feel of the sand between your toes, the linen cushion against your back or the light dancing off the ceramic tiles. I’m thrilled to report that a stay at the new Cap Juluca offered just that, and I’m eager to return. Also in this issue are interviews with some of our newfound chefs, shop owners and artists, all promising something new for 2019. On Antigua we tracked down a vegan baker whose healthy treats offer those sticking to their 2019 health goals a guilt-free indulgence. We also report on a nascent business on Nantucket and one that we expect to see trailed by a string of followers, the island’s first-ever retail and medical marijuana dispensary and cultivation center, The Green Lady. As always, I am eager to hear our readers’ feedback and welcome your comments on our stories both past and present. For 2019, I wish you all strength and fortitude with your resolutions, but perhaps more so an opportunity to indulge in this much-needed new form of what I’m dubbing “tactile luxury.” MEG NOLAN | mnolan@flytradewind.com | @megnolanvr

HARBOUR ISLAND, BAHAMAS
Harbour Island is a three-mile spit of an island lying just northwest of Eleuthera in the Bahamas.
while the west coast’s Harbour Bay plays host to turtles and stingrays, as well as some of the most expensive real estate in the world. It’s said that Harbour Island has the highest home prices per square mile, particularly in the tony Narrows section at the north end of the island. Regardless, it’s the friendly residents (all 3,000), the charming candy-colored cottages of downtown Dunmore Town and the excellent dining that have us charting a course for the island. Whether it’s a stay at one of the fabulous hotels or renting a beachfront cottage, the pace is purposely slow, the water achingly clear and the restaurants remarkably tasty. ITS EASTERN SHORE IS KNOWN FOR ITS LONG PINK SAND BEACH

Start your day off right, and don’t forget to ask owner Anna about her community yoga classes too. LUNCH: Sip Sip is the island’s seeand-be-seen lunch spot. Its name refers to the island’s strong tradition of gossip— so best head there for the lobster quesadilla and the latest skinny around town. Color Theory and raised Martha’s Vineyard islander. Largely self-taught, she has an intuitive sense of composition and color that is undeniable. Her paintings are crafted in an abstracted style reminiscent of Cubist landscapes featuring local settings and seascapes or, as she says, “painting with the colors of the seasons.” She paints in a tight hand, controlling the composition by reducing it into brightly colored shapes that become multiple planes of harmonious colors that are truly captivating. Cassiani decided in her early 20s to turn her painting hobby into a profession by getting involved in the island’s flea markets and shows and displaying her work in local shops. As she notes, “I took full advantage of what Martha’s Vineyard’s art culture had to offer and dove in.” ARTIST RACHAEL CASSIANI IS A BORN
Tucked inside a darling shingled bungalow, right alongside her family’s restaurant in downtown Gustavia, Malol is the brand-new women’s boutique owned and managed by St. Barths native Lola Stakelborough.

Although she’s part of a family of island restaurateurs—her grandfather owns Le Select and her parents and brother run Eddy’s Ghetto—Lola blazed her own path, having sought a degree in marketing for fashion and design during her studies abroad. With her passion for fashion, Lola spent the last few years gaining experience by working at other island boutiques. Officially opened just this past December, Malol showcases Lola’s personal carefree, bohemian style. The name, after all, is derived from the nickname her friends gave her growing up. Featuring both lesser-known labels she’s discovered during her travels, such as Bastah, and more recognized labels like Paolita, Malol offers one-stop shopping for that insouciant laid-back yet fashion-forward look, seemingly signature on St. Barths. Open before lunch as well as at night—until 11 p.m.—to grab the post-dinner crowd, Malol is every bit the local girl’s dream come true. FOR MORE INFORMATION

Antiguan Vegan Dietary restrictions now seem to be the norm rather than the exception for visitors to the Caribbean. Beyond organic, diners are asking for vegan and gluten-free options at a regular rate, prompting owners Deuce and Trevor Mckay of Antigua’s year-old Caribbean Plant Chef to respond in kind, opening a small vegan bakery offering 100% plantbased products. From pizzas to pumpkin bread, we asked Chef Deuce how business is going as one of the few allorganic catering options in Antigua. W H AT M A D E Y O U S TA R T C A R I B B E A N P L A N T C H E F ?
I was in the process of changing my lifestyle, eating both vegan and glutenfree items out of a personal health need, and either I didn’t see anywhere else offering these items, or when I did, they weren’t really healthy or fresh, and the taste wasn’t there. So I decided to make what I wanted myself. Friends were sampling what I had made and said, “Deuce, you should sell this; it’s much better than anything you’d get in the grocery stores.”

Having risen up the ranks from chef de partie to now chef de cuisine at this Relais & Châteaux property, Browne oversees all operations and menus, including the fine dining Restaurant 750 and casual all-day eatery Indigo. He even offers cooking classes. Right now, however, Chef Browne is all about showcasing vegetables and garden-grown herbs in his new vegetarian menu. Dishes like Mint Infused Watermelon and Beet Salad with Vegan Blue Cheese and Raspberry Vinaigrette and Butternut Squash and Zucchini Noodles with Roasted Artichokes, Collared Asparagus, Garlic Cream and Vegetable Ash showcase the skill and creativity of the award-winning chef (he and the resort’s culinary team won the chefs’ competition at the Nevis Mango and Food Festival in 2017 and 2018). We grabbed the fit foodie for a few quick questions about his cuisine and restaurant management style. What is it about being a chef that you find most rewarding? And most challenging?
What was the award-winning mango dish at the annual Mango Festival?
The biggest reward is hearing appreciation from our guests for their dining experience. At the same time, keeping guests happy can be challenging.
Ha! This event went so fast, I can’t remember! I do recall we were rewarded for our workmanship skills and ability to create.
What’s more difficult—running a packed dinner service or teaching a cooking class?
What is it about fresh-caught wahoo that makes it a favorite of yours?
It’s more challenging to run a packed dinner service as so many people have allergies or dietary restrictions, and we need to keep track of each table. Teaching a cooking class is fun for me and I’m more relaxed.
I love the texture and taste of wahoo, and it’s easy to cook with.
What are some of the more fun things you’ve taught at the cooking class? Our cooking classes are very intimate, which allows me to provide cooking tips for guests to take home. That’s the most fun part for me—and the guests.
What’s the biggest crowd-pleasing dish on the menu at 750? Everyone loves the lobster bisque! The rack of lamb is also very popular.
What’s the most challenging dish for you to put together on the menu? Again, it’s the lobster bisque that’s the most complicated dish on the menu.
Where do you get the vegetables on the menu? Most of the vegetables on our menu are grown locally, with a few imported.
What’s your favorite local ingredient to work with? I love cooking with ginger, honey, sweet potato, passion fruit, plantain and coconut—all the Caribbean flavors!
If you weren’t a chef, what would you be? I’d probably be a carpenter and still working with my hands. My dad is a carpenter and I started working with him at a very young age before getting into cooking. I like to construct! LEARN MORE

ALTHOUGH THE SEA REMAINS THE SAME GLITTERING AQUAMARINE HUE
and the sand is as powder-soft as before, the beloved Cap Juluca resort on Anguilla, now owned by Belmond Resorts (recently acquired by LVMH) and having just been refurbished to the tune of 121 million dollars, sparkles like a brand-new gemstone, if not the crown jewel, as it is the first resort to unveil the Belmond brand’s new art direction: the Art of Belmond. With nary a neighbor in sight, Cap Juluca bleeds exclusivity. The entrance is curvaceous and narrow, winding between two bodies of water and lined
with swaying palms, ensuring the guests’ arrival feels every bit a Caribbeaninfused regal affair. Climbing the stairs into the newly dome-topped lobby or what they call the Main House—a building that was blown out to ensure a client’s first view of the sparkling sea is as expansive as it can be—provides a clear vantage to the design aesthetic of the property. Led by U.S.-based architecture and interior design firm Rottet Studio alongside Belmond’s in-house design team, the design concept, according to Laura Rottet, follows the fanciful storyline of an Anguillan land baron creating his own colonial estate, filling it with treasures from both abroad and local
WINTER BREAK 2019 | PAGE 29
surroundings. “The new design is about intrigue and allowing guests to feel relaxed and free to wholly embrace barefoot luxury in the Caribbean, while also enjoying the most finely appointed resort in the world. We hope you will never see another property like this in the world, as it is really of the land,” she explains. Despite the design ethos’ storyline of a colonial land baron, the building’s whitewashed Greco-Moroccan architecture and abundant arches can’t

help but recall the Mediterranean or Andaman sea. Nevertheless, the furnishings are muted in neutral tones with brown piping and cane accents while the main house purposely features various small rooms including two libraries, a meeting room and a small boutique to conjure a more manor-like feel. Seating is plentiful, potted palms in large urns alongside iron lanterns are at every corner and the dining area is centered around an emerald-tiled fountain pool. The emerald green color, an ideal complementary tone to the aqua color of the sea, is used frequently
T H E H A N G A R | C A P J U L U C A R E N O VAT I O N
throughout the common spaces. Rottet confirms, “We wanted to use colors that wouldn’t take away from the view.” Draped in emerald tones, the bar at Cips features exquisite handcrafted custom ceramic tiles sourced from Mexico that are not just on the floor but the ceiling as well, which, against dark green walls on one side and views of the aqua sea on the other, create a most dazzling effect. The bar in the main house is similarly swathed in dark green but with a cane-paneled ceiling, equally as cosseting.
The guestrooms—all 108—have also been redone top to bottom, each featuring its own private veranda, four-poster beds, a neutral colorscape and deliciously tall ceilings. The beds are a favorite of designer Rottet’s teammate, James, noting how they’re like four-poster beds turned up a notch, featuring spindle posters with non-symmetrical designs. Original 18th- and 19th-century botanical prints sourced from the Victoria & Albert Museum in London are the colonial nod in the room. The dark grey mosaictiled floors are custom to the resort and feel every bit that way. As Rottet

The white Greco-Moorish architecture of the resort’s separate villa-like structures shimmers in the sun— mirage-like against the brilliant aqua waters.
explains, “Most resorts have white floors, but if you think about it, they’re often too glaring and bright and the opposite of soothing. We wanted to do a floor that was cool to the touch and offers a texture, one you could see against your toes.” The design behind the technology was thoughtful with plugs and USB ports discreetly tucked into desk and bedside drawers while the smart TV boasts all the channels and easy-to-manage hookups to your own devices. The standalone villas range from three to five bedrooms and come complete with kitchens, dining areas and private pools. Despite all this interior prowess, the crescent white beach overlooking Maundays Bay remains the star attraction. Lining the famous beach
PAGE 32 | GOODSPEED MAGAZINE
are cushioned rattan lounge chairs and white with blue-trim umbrellas equipped with push-button service bells that, upon pressing, will beckon a dedicated server to your lounge chair, offering a full bar menu ranging from rosé to French fries to prawn salad. From attentive beach waiters to friendly housekeeping and poolside attendants happy to play photographer for clients eager for that snap of themselves in the brandnew infinity pool, the staff is the gateway to discovering the intentional relaxed pace of the resort. Smiles are plentiful, especially from the watersports guys, who will send you on your merry way to paddleboard, shaking their heads and laughing when you ignore their warning about the stiff breeze.
T H E H A N G A R | C A P J U L U C A R E N O VAT I O N
The food at Cap Juluca is a clear highlight. Featuring three restaurants— four if you count the Cap Shack, a hand-built wooden and rope shack at the opposite end of the beach with an open-air bar and toes-in-the-sand seating—it’s no wonder people are reluctant to leave. Maundays Club, offering fresh juices and tapas, is just off the lobby with seating set around a magnificent emerald-tiled fountain pool with sweeping views of the crescent beach. The fine-dining PIMMS is located adjacent to Cips by Cipriani, both serving elegantly prepared cuisine—one seafood oriented and the other a Caribbean-infused reiteration of its Venetian namesake. Think: Macheroni with crayfish. The combination of the views through the arches out to the sea and the beach beyond, the water lapping right up to
the edge, and the evening breeze flittering through the loggia-like space offers what every seaside dining experience must hope to achieve—an effortless, signature ambiance. And even better, it’s equally as lovely at breakfast as it is at dinner. With so many superlative elements—the beach, the distinct architecture, the design, the food—it’s not surprising Cap Juluca feels unlike any other resort in the world. And it’s this singularity, this individualism that, as Rottet’s design goal decrees, will ensure people never mistake it for another spot and will gladly return, drawn to its distinctive persona. Nantucket Herb Just over a year ago, in December 2017, Nantucket approved a permit for its first-ever medical and recreational marijuana dispensary, The Green Lady. Located on Amelia Drive in a former dentist’s office, the combined dispensary and cultivation center is as discreet as it is impressive. while the entrance is actually tucked around back with small signage. Admittance is strictly regulated with three checks of identification prior to purchase. The Green Lady has made security a priority—and it’s no wonder, given the background of the founders, married couple Nicole and Rupert Campbell. Residents of Katonah, New York, the two hail from backgrounds in agricultural chemicals, chemical manufacturing and fire safety, making their experience particularly vital to the operation. THE FAÇADE REMAINS TYPICALLY SHINGLED AND UNASSUMING
Given that marijuana is still an illegal federal substance, the transportation of the drug across the federal waters of Nantucket Sound is impossible, hence the need for the cultivation center. Of course, given Nicole Campbell’s professional experience, her intention to control the quality of the product from the get-go was also presumed. According to The Green Lady’s website, they will “provide the highest quality of medical cannabis, with a primary focus on non-euphoric pills, oils and salves.” As of print time, The Green Lady is the only dispensary and cultivation center on the island with all its state and local approvals for both medical and recreational sales. The doors plan to open in spring of 2019 with the cultivation

Marijuana was legalized under state law in Massachusetts for medical purposes in 2012 and for recreational purposes in 2016. Sixty-four percent of Nantucket voters approved recreational marijuana sales in 2016.

already in the works as of last month, according to Green Lady’s Operation Manager, Mike Grasso. The grow facility is nothing if not robust. The cannabis is being grown in their own organic soil, and they have installed a commercial-infused product kitchen for making their line of edible products. A tangential extraction lab will produce concentrates with strains high in both CBD and THC. The dispensary will offer the full spectrum of cannabis edibles and concentrates for vape cartridges available for purchase by both medical patients and adults over 21 with a valid state-approved ID. “We’re excited to be the first dispensary to open on Nantucket,” says Grasso. “The community here is so wonderful and supportive. We’ve worked hard to earn the privilege to provide medical patients and adult consumers on the island the cannabis products they need, and we’re ready to deliver.” However, their status as the sole island vendor is likely temporary, as two other ventures already have paperwork filed. The first is ACK Natural, backed by several island residents, looking to build a 5,000-square-foot dispensary near Nantucket Memorial Airport. The second is Acreage Holdings, a nationwide cannabis-investment company. They are partnering with Mass Medi-Spa, which is eager to open a recreational facility and already has preliminary permitting, including a host community benefit agreement and a provisional certificate of registration, but at time of print has not yet been issued a special permit from the Planning Board. Last fall, amidst the whirlwind of applications for new retail and medical businesses on Nantucket, Town Meeting voters approved a moratorium until the end of the year so that state and local regulators could have time to mandate set regulations on retail operations, growing, processing, transporting and other such elements affiliated with a marijuana operation. They also approved legislation permitting retail operations solely in commercial neighborhoods and commercial industrial zones on island. State laws requiring any dispensary or marijuana operation to be more than 500 feet from a school mean some zones near the high school are not permissible, pushing the majority of options toward Amelia Drive—the location of The Green Lady.
Given the opioid crisis our nation faces, which on some level includes Nantucket, it seems almost foolhardy to disregard the proven benefits of medical marijuana for patients managing long-term pain. According to an article published in Health Affairs in 2016, physicians in medical marijuana states prescribe 1,826 fewer doses of painkillers in a given year compared to states without medical marijuana laws. Of course, concerns abound that access will beget wider usage, particularly among teens; this trepidation is valid. There’s no denying the existing proof that marijuana is not healthy for the developing brain. As a small island, a state and a nation, we are facing an issue that has already been vehemently debated with merited arguments on both sides; however, the opening of The Green Lady on Nantucket appears to be a clear victory for those in favor. Understanding the Terms CBD, OR CANNABIDIOL, is a cannabis compound that has
significant medical benefits but does not make people feel “stoned” and can actually counteract the psychoactivity of THC. CBD-rich cannabis offers an appealing option for patients looking for relief from inflammation, pain, anxiety, psychosis, seizures and spasms, among other needs.* THC, OR TETRAHYDROCANNABINOL, is the chemical
responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects. It acts much like the cannabinoid chemicals made naturally by the body, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). *Reference: Projectcbd.org

“ At the beginning of our journey we were looking for the ‘truth,’ meaning what qualities drinking water should have to make it the best, so we could then compare the waters on the market and find the one best suited for us. What we discovered was that the ‘perfect’ water didn’t exist commercially—either man-engineered or naturally sourced. So we set out to find it.” CO-FOUNDER ELISABETH MUHR
After a 16-year-long journey, backed by research and precise geological exploration, the source for Hallstein Artesian Water was found in 2005 in an aquifer in the Dachstein region of the Austrian Alps. While it’s merely a coincidence that the family behind this intrepid discovery happens to be Austrian-American, their passion for providing high-quality pure drinking water is by total design. Frustrated by the lack of quality standards for drinking water, the Muhr Family enlisted water experts to define a set list of parameters for true drinking water excellence. Once they were armed with that list and they tracked the spot on the map that delivered a natural source of water that fulfilled the eight core and four secondary parameters, they forged ahead, acquiring permits, a stainless steel piping system and a precision bottling facility to create what is now Hallstein Water. Hallstein is delivered in five-gallon (19-liter) Tritan BPA-free bottles. They supply a small range of high-quality dispensers that they recommend as the most convenient way to get your Hallstein from bottle to glass.

SuNdowners Goodspeed’s latest pick for where to best toast the sunset F S A N G U I L L A S U N S E T L O U N G E — Open daily from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. with live music,
glamorous styling and panoramic sea views, it’s no wonder this spot has a special place on our list of sundowner venues. Designed by Kelly Wearstler, the bar-lounge is filled with handcrafted design elements, but perhaps most striking (besides the sea view) is the full-length black marble slab behind the bar. With signature cocktails ranging from the Lotus Frozé (a rosé granita) to Dragon’s Breath (a gin concoction), both locals and guests are tempted to return night after night to toast the sun’s departure. Our favorite, though, is the Essence of Life, presented in a charming brass pineapple shaker to ensure a tropical mood against the pink-hued sky. www.fourseasons.com/anguilla
